LIGHTING COLLECTION SHAPES AND SHADOWS
LIGHTING POSSESSES A
ABILITY TO SCULPT THE ATMOSPHERE OF A SPACE, PAINTING IN SHAPES AND SHADOWS. FROM THE AMBIENT GLOW FROM A CEILING LAMP, FUNCTIONAL LIGHTING LIT UP BY A TABLE OR FLOOR LAMP, TO DECORATIVE LIGHT ILLUMINATING IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS - LAYERING WITH LIGHT BRINGS WELCOMING COMFORT AND WARMTH TO A HOME.
Carl Hansen & Søn is proud to expand its lighting collection by reintroducing Hans J. Wegner’s innovative, functionalist designs along with the sculptural and organic shapes by Henning Koppel. As a testament to inimitable craftsmanship, the lamps remain relevant through a timeless design language and by continuing to create atmospheres through well-lit spaces. These mid-century silhouettes shape the future of contemporary lighting design, transcending generations with enduring functionality and appeal.
A LEGACY OF DESIGN
Our story began in 1908 when Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop on the Danish island of Funen. Over the years, the success of our family business has depended on two core ideas: an uncompromising commitment to the finest craftsmanship and alliances with exceptional designers who continually reinvent and refine the concept of modern design.
For over 110 years, we have specialised in providing outstanding furniture craftsmanship that brings visionary design concepts to life. Although much has changed at Carl Hansen & Søn, the fundamentals are the same. Our long-standing goal remains to gather the best modern furniture designs under one roof and to share these icons with the world.
We continue to emphasise the importance of balancing classic craftsmanship with innovative modern technology, establishing new relationships with the families of designers from the 20th century and elevating the work of new talent.

SOFT ILLUMINATION
Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1973, the Opala Lighting Series has a distinctive, almost futuristic, expression with its slightly tilted lamp shade and straight lines. The asymmetrically cut lamp shade is a testament to Wegner’s focus on function, as the concept allows one size of lamp shade to fit both the pendant and the floor lamp. The Opala Lighting Series has a focused task light while illuminating the surrounding space softly through the white shade.

AN HONEST CONSTRUCTION
HJW37 The Pendant, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1962, combines soft shapes with an industrial design and has been in continuous production since its launch. Characteristic to Wegner’s design idiom, the lamp has an honest construction where the functional elements are transformed into decorative details. This is exemplified by the handle that is an integrated part of the design, enabling the user to adjust the height of the pendant without touching the shade. A true masterpiece of function and form.
Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative, and prolific. Being world-famous for his iconic chair and furniture designs, Wegner also experimented with other categories such as silverware, wallpaper, and lighting, which all have his organic modernism trademark in common. Wegner’s use of industrial materials such as steel and acrylic gave a new dimension to his portfolio of design, and his lamps from the 1960s and 1970s prove that he kept on being visionary throughout his career.

AN INTERPLAY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW
Originally created in the late 1960s, the BT Lighting Series was designed by Danish architects Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. The three designs differ in size and shape but are united by their stylish simplicity and a common feature: a half-mirror light bulb peeking out from under the lamp shades. Revealing the light source in all the designs was a conscious choice for Bonderup and Thorup. As such, the sleek pendants acquire further visual appeal, while the half-mirror bulb reflects the light onto the white interior of the shades, creating indirect lighting.
of balanced geometry
After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 1969, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup established Torsten Thorup & Claus Bonderup Architects in 1985 carrying design projects across the globe for more than 20 years. Besides product design, such as their geometric lamp series for Carl Hansen & Søn, their architectural practice spans private residences, store interiors, hotels, and housing.

A MODERN CLASSIC
The EK61 Opal Pendant was designed in 1961 by Danish architect and cabinetmaker Esben Klint. The understated and elegant pendant emits soft, indirect light due to its careful combination of classic materials. Originally imagined in pleated plastic, the design was too complicated to produce at the time and remained stored in the family archives. The new iteration features a pleated, superelliptical shape with distinctive top and bottom pieces, evoking traditional Chinese lanterns. The mouth-blown opal glass and oak, meticulously turned and honed by hand, give it a classic look, ennobling the original design.
As the son of Kaare Klint, the world-famous architect and professor, who is generally considered the father of modern Danish design, Esben Klint was born into a family of architects and designers. Throughout his life, he worked as an architect and cabinetmaker, creating his distinctive style in lighting, furniture, and large buildings. Esben Klint’s main source of inspiration came from his travels at home and abroad, the aim of which was always to seek out and experience architecture.

SCULPTURAL MODES OF EXPRESSION
With its simple, organic shape, the HK20 Bubi Lamp embodies Henning Koppel’s sculptural mode of expression. Inspired by his grandchild’s summer hat, the lamp was designed in 1972, elegantly combining a soft, drop-like shape with steel and opal acrylic. As a trained sculptor and artist, Koppel had an artistic approach to his designs and, as opposed to many of his contemporary colleagues, valued form higher than function. Koppel’s organic, sweeping style is recognisable in his entire body of work, from silverware and jewellery to tableware and furniture.
An artistic approach to design
Danish sculptor and designer Henning Koppel is regarded as one of the most important Danish designers of all time. Koppel is best known for his work with silverware, but he also worked with other materials such as porcelain, granite, watercolour, steel, and glass. Koppel had an elegant and precise sense of proportions. He always managed to find the ideal balance, regardless of the material at hand, creating timeless and enduring works. HENNING

A SENSE OF COMFORT
The MO Lighting Series is a collection of exquisitely minimalistic lamps designed to bring a sense of serenity and warmth - inspired by the comforting effect that light has on the human experience, especially during the dark days of winter. The Danish designer Mads Odgård chose to focus on two simple and familiar shapes: the hemisphere and the cylinder, forms with clear, logical connections to natural light.
The logic of minimalism
Mads Odgård has always had a love for straight lines, right angles, and geometric shapes. This love shines through in his professional design work, the interior design of his own home and when landscaping his garden. If he does not know where to begin when creating a new design, he simply starts by drawing a straight line. This minimalist mindset is evident in Mads Odgård’s design portfolio, which includes the lamps of the MO Lighting Series – his first collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn.

ATMOSPHERIC LIGHT
The RF200 Petal Lamp, designed by Rikke Frost in 2021, is distinguished by its ability to create mood lighting. The distinctive composition of wood, metal, and ambient light takes its cues from trees, architectural arches, and columns. The lamp’s wooden base rests on two vaulted metal reflectors illuminating upwards and dispersing soft, glare-free light downwards through the shades. Allowing the materials to play a leading role in its simple, organic design, the juxtaposition of warm wood and cool metal coupled with uncompromising craftsmanship ensures the Petal Lamp is both timeless and modern.
Danish designer Rikke Frost has always been curious about the combination of different craft traditions and types of material, a fact clearly reflected in her design portfolio, where traditional and contemporary design is expressed in sofas, tables, chairs, and lamps with an organic idiom. Frost blends natural materials, such as woven paper cord and wood, with industrial materials, like steel, to create modern and functional designs.
