Highlight

With over 110 years of design heritage, it would be impossible to look to the future without looking to the past. At Carl Hansen & Søn, preserving our history and traditional craftsmanship is an intrinsic part of our DNA. From the influences of the father of Danish modern design, Kaare Klint, with his celebrated 1914 Faaborg Chair, to the first look at our novelties, including the CH45 Rocking Chair by Hans J. Wegner, with references to 19th-century Shaker furniture. With each piece leaving our factory, we aim to continue the legacy of design.

We entrust our most cherished material - wood, in the hands of British sculptor Nicholas Shurey, with whom we present the Wonders of Wood exhibition. With an approach to woodcraft rooted in honoring the tree’s origin, his sculptures demonstrate the natural beauty of the wood that will eventually become a piece of Carl Hansen & Søn furniture. Paying tribute to Kaare Klint’s most iconic designs, we visit the homes of the new generation of creatives - a testament to his vision that these pieces continue to endure in our homes today.

By Appointment to The Royal Danish Court

We are honored and humbled to have been appointed the prestigious and historic predicate Purveyor to The Royal Danish Court. As a family-business, we have a long tradition of crafting furniture that is recognized for its design, high quality, and uncompromising craftsmanship, and we will continue to do so for many generations to come.

CARL HANSEN & SØN

Kaare Klint was an iconic furniture designer, educator, and visionary who made his mark on Danish design history. In 2023, Carl Hansen & Søn commends this achievement by re-introducing new designs and showcasing highlights from Klint’s impressive life’s work.

THE STORYTELLER 3

THE FATHER OF DANISH MODERN

One of the most revered founding fathers of Danish furniture design, Kaare Klint influenced several generations of furniture designers with his mathematically based functionalism. Klint’s own designs have today proven to be timeless classics and a testament to impeccable craftsmanship. Design and architecture played important roles in Klint’s life from a young age. As the son of architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, he developed an early interest in finding ways to unite function and aesthetics. Together with his son, Esben Klint, Klint took over finishing the Copenhagen landmark, the Grundtvig’s Church, 19 years after it first appeared on his father’s drawing pad.

1914

FAABORG CHAIR

Kaare Klint’s KK9662 Faaborg Chair was designed for contemplating artwork at the Danish Faaborg Museum. Widely regarded as the first Danish modern design classic, the chair started a new era for design, creating a foundation for the Danish Modern period that occurred globally in the 1950s.

1927—1933

RED CHAIR

The KK37580 Red Chair won international acclaim when showcased at the Danish Museum of Art and Design and the Danish Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition in 1929. In 1933, additional sizes were added to the Red Chair Series, with references to English Chippendale chair designs.

1930

ADDITION SOFA

The first version of the KK48650 Addition Sofa was created in the early 1930s for Copenhagen’s prestigious New Carlsberg Foundation offices. Inspired by a French rococo sofa, the design is a bold testament to simplification and purpose due to its modular design and clever construction.

MIX CHAIR

Since its unveiling in 1930, Klint’s KK43960 Mix Chair has earned iconic status among collectors. This easy chair is admired as much for its elegant, flowing form as for its intricate construction concept with a design exposing a sophisticated geometric exercise.

1933

SAFARI CHAIR

Another iconic example of Klint’s design ideology – the KK47000 Safari Chair. Klint effortlessly transformed a historical archetype into a modern, collapsible chair. His considered design is a hallmark of sophistication, well-conceived proportions, and remarkable material effects. The Safari Chair was first presented in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition.

Kaare Klint

1888-1954

Recognized as the father of modern Danish Design, Kaare Klint made a name for himself as a craftsman, visionary designer, and educator. Kaare Klint was highly immersed in architecture but would become best known for his work in furniture design. As one of the first designers to elevate functionalism and the practical study of design above style and academic tradition, Kaare Klint was a true reformer. Focusing on the human scale, proportions, and everyday functionality, Klint created ‘human furniture’ based on studies of the human body.

Klint insisted on clear, logical design, clean lines, the best materials, and superb craftsmanship in his work. In 1924, he helped establish the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a professor at the Academy, he would teach some of the greatest designers of the 20th century, including Hans J. Wegner, Mogens Koch, Arne Jacobsen, and Poul Kjærholm. Inspired by Klint, these designers would go on to shape the Golden Age of Danish Design.

A TRIBUTE TO

"The legacy of Kaare Klint has particularly affected our practice. Both his approach and way of teaching, but also that generation's notion of architecture as something that transcends all scales - something that builds on the existing world. This is also a sustainable way of working with architecture."

MATHIAS MENTZE & ALEXANDER V. OTTENSTEIN

The multidisciplinary architectural practice, founded by Mentze Ottenstein, Mathias Mentze & Alexander Vedel Ottenstein, spans different scales of architecture. Their work counts everything from small objects to larger buildings, but always with a main focus on interior and exhibition design. With a background in architecture, Mentze and Ottenstein are especially inspired by Kaare Klint’s approach to teaching, where inspiration was sought in the past to create designs for the future. Inside their private home, located in the heart of Copenhagen, a curated combination of the past, present and future exposes their shared passion for art and design in all forms.

PATRICIA PERALES GARCÍA

“We have two Kaare Klint safari chairs in a beautiful green that have been bleached by the sun throughout the years in the summerhouse. They were bought by my husband’s grandmother a long time ago. She is no longer here, but I know of Kaare Klint through her, and I find there is something beautiful in the possibility of getting to know someone across time this way.”

The Copenhagen-based Spanish artist Patricia Perales García crosses the practices of textile design and ceramics with unique works reflecting mental landscapes. After studying and living for several years in both Florence and London, García splits her time between Copenhagen and the small Danish island of Glænø. Her relationship with Kaare Klint’s furniture designs is rooted in a pair of sun-bleached Safari Chairs that belonged to the grandmother of her Danish husband. Homemade pigments and necessary tools for Patricia’s artistic practice.

The Copenhagen apartment is filled with ubiquitous art pieces and design classics like the Safari Chair.

“My collecting of Kaare Klint furniture started with the Faaborg chair when I saw it at the Faaborg Art Museum many years ago. My relationship to Klint’s designs hasn’t changed over the years. For a brief period, I thought the designs might have become a bit old-fashioned, but it was short-lived, and today, I’m glad I didn’t act on it.”

MIKAEL ANDERSEN

Since 1989, gallerist Mikael Andersen has showcased emerging and established contemporary artists through the Copenhagen-based Galerie Mikael Andersen. In addition to his love for art, Andersen has also been a dedicated private collector of Kaare Klint furniture for more than 35 years –praising the simplicity and compositions of Klint’s designs. At home, his classic, hand-picked furniture complements modern art’s ever-changing and impressive collection.

Discover our long-standing relationship and love for wood. Nature’s finest material.
Wonders of Wood

OUR HOUSE OF CRAFT

At Carl Hansen & Søn, we believe that iconic design combines simplicity, aesthetics, and functionality. For over 115 years, we have specialized in providing outstanding furniture craftsmanship that brings visionary design concepts to life using the highest quality materials. Because our furniture is built to last a lifetime, it is vital that we select our wood from carefully vetted suppliers who share our values. Over time, we have cultivated long-standing relationships with these suppliers built upon mutual respect for natural materials and a deep commitment to quality.

Since 2017, Carl Hansen & Søn has been a proud manufacturer of FSCTM-certified furniture. Up to 90% of the wood we use in our products is FSC-certified, and the remainder derives from non-certified sustainable forestry. We use nearly every bit of wood we source, and the remaining scraps are repurposed as fuel to provide warmth to our production area and more than 450 local homes. And, even once that piece of wood has become furniture, its positive impact continues: a substantial amount of carbon is stored in wooden products.

The Benefits of Wood on Well-being

Wood has always been a beloved building material: it’s abundant, easy to access, and environmentally friendly when sourced from responsibly managed forests. But its benefits to our well-being add even more value to its role in our lives. Unlike human-made materials like concrete and plastic, wood has been demonstrated to have a calming effect on people’s emotional and physiological states, causing a drop in blood pressure, lowering the pulse, and reducing negative thoughts and anxiety. Simply touching a wooden surface has a soothing impact, evoking primal feelings of safety with its tactility.

At Carl Hansen & Søn, we craft each piece with the hope that it will improve the lives of those it encounters. Made from a rich variety of locally and internationally sourced woods, our evocative handcrafted wooden furniture adds warmth and welcome to an interior. Much like the trees from which they were first cut, our designs live and breathe, continuing to change as they age into something even more beautiful.

SHAPING NATURE INTO MASTERFUL DESIGNS

Every piece from Carl Hansen & Søn tells a story that starts with its materials. There are many elements to consider when it comes to materials, from important practicalities like strength, durability, and tactility, to more abstract qualities like beauty and the emotional response the material evokes. Wood is our great passion. Along with the classic varieties such as oak, beech, and ash, we also incorporate walnut, mahogany, and teak into our production. Discover a series of abstract compositions crafted by sculptor Nicholas Schurey, interpreting the character of a variety of the wood species in use at Carl Hansen & Søn.

A TALK WITH NICHOLAS SHUREY

Five years ago, British-born sculptor Nicholas Shurey left a stressful job in architecture for a working holiday on a farm in the Swiss Alps. An introduction to wood carving from a shepherd-cum-sculptor would ignite his passion for slow craft and a new-found sense of freedom. Today, Shurey’s pieces are making quite a stir as striking and functional works of art with an irresistible, tactile appeal.

Experience Shurey’s sculptures in the exhibition Wonders of Wood, made in collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn, throughout 2023.

INTERVIEW
CARL HANSEN & SØN 20
From his workshop in Copenhagen, Nicholas Shurey connects to nature through the beauty of raw material, conjuring organic and curvaceous sculptures from Danish-grown waste wood.

“In 2018, I decided to leave my architecture job and spend a month in Switzerland working with a farmer-cum-sculptor. The days were spent helping on the farm, tending the sheep and crops, making hay, and building greenhouses. During my breaks, I drew sketches in the barn and orchard, and in the evening, I made raw models in clay or wood. It was incredibly liberating to start with a block of solid wood and chip away to reveal the form hidden within it.

We are often discouraged from touching sculptures because we give it a sort of preciousness. Making sculptures with a practical purpose circumvents this issue and engages us with the pieces.

I typically work with green (undried) logs, using these as the starting point to inform ideas for sculptures. I source the vast majority of timber from trees that have to be felled around Copenhagen, collaborating with local tree surgeons to take logs that would otherwise be used as firewood. All of this means I have to be quite flexible depending on what is available.

The strong tradition and pedigree of Danish design and crafts were certainly one of the things that drew me to move to Copenhagen, but I think it’s the proximity to nature that influences my work most. We recently relocated our workshop to a building on a disused airfield north of the city, and I get to spend lots of time outdoors. My commute takes me through Hareskoven, where I walk Max, the dog, and take in the trees. This connection to nature keeps me feeling balanced and inspired.”

“A good sculpture fills its viewers with a desire to touch it, and we are intuitively drawn to objects that remind us of the body.”

PK1 Chair

With an inherent simplicity and a refined combination of materials, the PK1 Chair was designed by the internationally revered architect Poul Kjærholm in 1955 as his first chair design. Originally, the lightweight and stackable PK1 was made of brushed steel and wicker, but in the new PK1, the durable FSC-certified paper cord complements the steel elegantly and is a material that Carl Hansen & Søn has a long tradition of working with.

The all-in-one seat and back of the PK1 chair is hand woven with 180 meters of cord by a skilled craftsman, taking 15 hours. The intricate weaving technique was specially developed for the chair and is inspired by Kjærholm’s original work with wicker. Updated to match modern proportions, the PK1 increased by 6% from its 1950s design while respecting Kjærholm’s original vision.

1929-1980

During his relatively short career as a furniture designer, Poul Kjærholm made his mark as one of the finest representatives of modernism. With his ideals of simple form and outstanding craftsmanship, he is viewed as one of the fathers of modern Danish design. Kjærholm was also deeply influenced by Danish furniture designer Kaare Klint, who helped found the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Klint’s vision of simple and clear expression had a major impact on Kjærholm, who, like Klint, was uncompromising in his work with proportions and materials, as well as in his craftsmanship.

Kjærholm made a name for himself primarily with his functional steel, leather, and glass furniture. After completing his training as a cabinetmaker in Hjørring, Denmark, in 1949, he studied furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1952 and returning to teach shortly afterward.

Function and clarity became the hallmarks of Kjærholm’s career as an educator and a furniture designer. He did not see himself as someone who designed objects but rather as someone who created spaces. He often designed furniture with places in mind, doing so with a rigor and level of detail that continues to garner admiration.

CH45 Rocking Chair

From the beginning of Hans J. Wegner’s career, he was fascinated by designing rocking chairs. As always, he took a methodical approach to his design, focusing on the function. As a result, the CH45 Rocking Chair, designed in 1965, is perfectly proportioned, so one can sit relaxed and rock easily but rise effortlessly from the chair. The reclining backrest adds a dynamic expression to the overall composition. The kinship with the other furniture in the series is evident in the shaped bars, the envelope-patterned seat of paper cord, and the uniquely curved armrests, which are elevated at the rear. These design elements are classically Wegner, as the elevation allows for a solid joint. The grooves at the top of the backrest are also a typical Wegner detail, as they appear decorative and can be used as suspension for a neck pillow.

CARL HANSEN & SØN 26

Hans J. Wegner

1914-2007

Danish designer Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the leading furniture designers of the 20th century. He was a driving force in the Danish Modern movement, which helped change how people viewed furniture in the 1950s and 1960s. Wegner created almost 500 chairs, many of which have achieved iconic status. He described design as an organic process, in which he started with the function and focused on refining and simplifying, to reduce the chair to its simplest possible form.

Wegner is renowned for his precision, great insight into craftsmanship and uncompromising approach to design. This resulted in perfect joints, exquisite shapes, a constant curiosity about materials and a deep respect for the nature and inherent potential of wood. His furniture designs exhibit an intuitive connection between minimalist expression and an organic and inviting form that appeals to the senses.

Nesting Tables

Hans J. Wegner’s Nesting Tables, launched in 1952, have a distinctive light and organic look that reflects Wegner’s unique ability to design furniture that harmonizes with its surroundings and remains relevant for the future. With functional and space-saving properties, these tables can blend seamlessly into any interior with their discreet appearance. Wegner paid close attention to the details and entirety of his designs, achieving a sense of harmony between dimensions and materials. The three tables’ parts are proportionately scaled, featuring rounded and tapered legs, subtle curves on the supports, and classic mortise joints requiring high craftsmanship.

Kaare Klint’s two coffee tables were designed to meet a day’s needs –the square coffee table was originally intended for displaying a radio, while the circular model was designed for entertaining, with ample space for bottles and glasses.

The KK66870 Coffee Table from 1930 has a refined appearance and is one of Kaare Klint’s more detailed designs. The table’s angled legs have vertical grooves which stop at the shelf and continue under the tabletop, an elegant and decorative detail that celebrates good craftsmanship and adds character to the piece. The KK44860 Side Table from 1932 has a more discreet and minimalist aesthetic, testifying Klint’s pragmatic approach to design, where the function is paramount, and the wood serves as decoration.

THE STORYTELLER 29

Vilhelm Lauritzen

1894-1984

Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen was one of Denmark’s most influential architects and a father of Danish Modernism. Today, many of his projects remain as lasting examples of what was then a new and revolutionary approach to architecture in which form followed function. Throughout his career, he maintained that architecture should be an applied art that serves all, not just the privileged few. Among Lauritzen’s most famous and acclaimed works are Copenhagen Airport’s first terminal (1939), which is now known as the Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal, Radiohuset broadcasting building in Frederiksberg (1945), Vega music venue in Copenhagen (1956), and the Danish Embassy in Washington D.C. (1960).

Vilhelm Lauritzen was born on 10 September, 1894, in the town of Slagelse, Denmark. He graduated high school from Sorø Akademi in 1912 and from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 1921. The following year, he founded Tegnestuen Vilhelm Lauritzen (known today as Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects).

Lauritzen’s talents extended to interior design. Over the course of his career, he created everything from door handles, ashtrays and railings to lamps, sofas and chairs.

VLA61 Monarch Chair

In 1944, Vilhelm Lauritzen designed a project that never materialized, but the VLA61 Monarch Chair he created was produced in 10 copies. Until now, it was a coveted collector’s item sold at auctions worldwide. The VLA61 Monarch Chair is named after the majestic Monarch butterfly, a tribute to Lauritzen’s lifelong interest in them. With its generous upholstery, curved armrests, and organic, teardrop-shaped curvatures, the chair embodies an artistic expression that is light and sumptuous.

Experienced cabinetmakers face a complex and time-consuming manufacturing process. All details are hand-polished before assembly, and the entire chair is hand-polished again, especially around the joints, for a perfect finish. The backrest is upholstered only after mounting the chair to achieve precise finishes, which requires great care.

CARL HANSEN & SØN 30

AH Outdoor Series

Simplicity, clarity, and logic were the guiding design principles for the Danish architect Alfred Homann during the development of the AH Outdoor Series, where all superfluous details were eliminated in favor of simple expression and high functionality.

The AH Outdoor Series features a rigorous aesthetic paired with Homann’s sense of soft shapes – as evidenced in the beautifully curved armrests, backrests, and seats, where the braces elegantly grip the frame. These joints are meticulously polished by hand by skilled craftsmen to achieve a soft and tactile surface. A beautiful series to look at when not in use and functional to maneuver outdoors, exemplifying Homann’s attention to detail and understanding of form and function.

1948-2022

Alfred Homann was a multi-award-winning Danish architect and designer. He graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1976 and after spending some years as a student working with different Danish and American Architects, he founded his own studio in 1978 at 30 years old.

Simplicity, clarity, and logic were always the most important parameters for Homann. His keen eye for detail is evident in everything he designed. Homann created furniture, lighting, and architectural projects at museums, railway stations, private residences, and public buildings – everything with great precision and thoroughness.

In 1987, Homann established Homann Design Inc. in the United States, where he worked on different projects in addition to his Copenhagen studio. He traveled the world, giving lectures and presentations in the USA, Japan, Russia, and Europe.
