Talking with Wood Sculptor Nicholas Shurey

With over 110 years of design heritage, it would be impossible to look to the future without looking to the past. At Carl Hansen & Søn, preserving our history and traditional craftsmanship is an intrinsic part of our DNA. From the influences of the father of Danish modern design, Kaare Klint, with his celebrated 1914 Faaborg Chair, to the first look at our novelties, including the CH45 Rocking Chair by Hans J. Wegner, with references to 19th-century Shaker furniture. With each piece leaving our factory, we aim to continue the legacy of design.

We entrust our most cherished material - wood, in the hands of British sculptor Nicholas Shurey, with whom we present the Wonders of Wood exhibition. With an approach to woodcraft rooted in honoring the tree’s origin, his sculptures demonstrate the natural beauty of the wood that will eventually become a piece of Carl Hansen & Søn furniture. Paying tribute to Kaare Klint’s most iconic designs, we visit the homes of the new generation of creatives - a testament to his vision that these pieces continue to endure in our homes today.

We are honored and humbled to have been appointed the prestigious and historic predicate Purveyor to The Royal Danish Court. As a family-business, we have a long tradition of crafting furniture that is recognized for its design, high quality, and uncompromising craftsmanship, and we will continue to do so for many generations to come.

The publication is printed on Munken Lynx and is produced in Sweden at one of the cleanest production facilities in the world using only half of the water that other paper factories use. The water is biologically cleaned and is so pure after the first purification, that it can be used as drinking water. The paper mills are FSC™ and PEFC™ certified, and the same goes for the Munken Lynx. The main raw material for paper is wood, which is a renewable resource that takes up and binds CO2 as the forests grow.

Kaare Klint was an iconic furniture designer, educator, and visionary who made his mark on Danish design history. In 2023, Carl Hansen & Søn commends this achievement by re-introducing new designs and showcasing highlights from Klint’s impressive life’s work.
