The Partridges: Four Generations Land in Reno

M

y first impression of the Partridge family is that they really, really love Reno. As I approach their Somersett residence, I’m greeted by their vehicle’s license plate that reads “LUVRENO.” I think to myself that they must be among the Biggest Little City’s biggest fans. Upon meeting the Partridges, I am compelled to ask if they have anything in common with the famously happy 1970’s musical sitcom family. The 89-year-old matriarch of the family, Olivette, chimes in: “Well honey, I’ve always been a singer and I love jazz and big band classics!” Apparently, some of the musical DNA has been passed on to Olivette’s great-grandson, Abe, 2, who is skipping around singing his own version of “This Old Man.” Olivette’s son, Rick, and his wife of 38 years, Joan, are Abe’s proud grandparents. Their own daughter, Carlie, followed them to Reno with Abe in tow in 2012 when the couple retired from a lifetime of rain in Seattle. “312 days of sunshine a year in Reno? I said, count me in!” says Rick, who shudders at the thought of his overcast past in the Emerald City. “It really chaps my hide that we spent so many years in that gosh-forsaken rain. Reno is a paradise.” It appears that Rick truly does “LUVRENO.” “Oh honey,” says Olivette, beaming, “Isn’t it just marvelous here? Just like Italy. Oh, the views!” Olivette is sitting in the Partridge’s courtyard, where spring flowers have just begun to bloom. Joan, a retired teacher with more than 36 years of experience, echoes their sentiments. “Reno is a wonderful place for all of our family’s life phases,” Joan reflects. “Olivette is enjoying her golden years, Rick and I are enjoying our retirement here, and Carlie and Abe are loving the community too.” Though she’s retired, Joan continues to tutor local students in SAT and general math. “Once an educator, always an educator—a lifelong learner,” she smiles. Joan was a high school and middle school math teacher during her teaching 4

years, as well as co-owner of an SAT prep company that continues to thrive. “I loved creating a small business in the academic realm that also supported the local communities—our business contributes to the schools we serve by donating extensively to the schools’ Parent-Teacher-Associations.” Rick is retired from a career spanning owning a small ski rental business in Seattle to doing consulting work for the Red Cross. He also spent a few years as a tour guide and safety officer for “Ride the Ducks,” a company that ran Seattle tours on amphibious vehicles through the streets and waterways of the city. In his role as Captain for the Ducks Tours, Rick was able to combine his love of people and his perennial “safety first” attitude. Rick’s greatest role yet is as grandfather, AKA “Ganpa” to young Abe. “Abe and I get to spend our days hiking around Somersett looking for rabbits, snakes and chipmunks.” Abe corrects grandpa: “Chip-monkeys.” The pair can also be found at Reno’s many parks and museums, or visiting Great-Grandma Olivette at her North Reno home. Joan says that their days in Reno are like a cruise. “We’ll go from golf to skiing to the pool to bocce ball to dinner gatherings with friends,” she says. Joan shares that having all four generations in Reno is a tremendous gift for the whole family. “Just a few years ago,” she says, “we would have all laughed if you told us we’d all end up together in Reno, Nevada. Rick, Olivette and I were in Seattle, and Carlie was in San Francisco, and Abe was just a twinkle in his mother’s eye. But here we are!” The Partridges are more than happy to be nesting in Reno, where Olivette has found peace in the vistas, Rick in the sunshine and Joan among beloved new friends. They do miss their son, Craig, who lives in San Jose with his wife, Tracy, and the newest little June 2014

Partridge, Scarlett. “We got so spoiled by having our first grandchild right here with us, we’ll miss that with Scarlett but love the fact that we have the time and space for visitors, and the Bay is just a few hours over the hill,” says Rick. Partridges and Pear Trees Rick Partridge has always had a “green thumb,” but here in Nevada, he’s found ways to enjoy gardening in the drier climate. “We’ve got peach, apple and pear

The Good Life

trees here,” beams Rick. “What more could you ask for? Reno has it all.” Aside from appreciating the sunlit beauty of the mountainous landscape, Rick and Joan found an immediate fondness for their neighbors and friends. “It was amazing how we found such wonderful and immediate friendships here,” says Joan. Rick adds that their community of friends and acquaintances here, are “as good as it gets. They’re golden!” Living in Reno for

the past two years has reminded Joan of the song lyrics: “Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold.” Rick and Joan explain that people often have misperceptions about Reno. “When we told our Seattle friends we were retiring to Reno, they were surprised. They thought of Reno as an old casino town. It’s a bestkept-secret and not widely known for the evolving place that it is,” says Joan. Rick says they love hosting visitors throughout the year, joking that their home has become the “Partridge Hotel.” “That’s just proof that people really love it here. It has a real vacation feel, and visitors are so impressed by the beauty of the Northwest Reno landscapes,” explains Joan. Finding Roots, Finding a Future When the Partridges all ended up in Northwest Reno, all at different life stages, they all had one thing in common: looking to the future. Carlie, who had worked as an educator in the San Francisco County Jail for years, was delighted to find a position at the Jan Evans Juvenile Detention Center. “The educational program at Jan Evans is excellent, and the entire facility is state-ofthe art,” says Carlie, who was impressed

foster families is key to redirecting these youth and helping them reintegrate and participate in our city’s future.” Carlie is also the Content Coordinator for The Good Life magazines of Reno, a role in which she enjoys branching out into the neighborhood and sharing stories. The future is nowhere more evident than on young Abe’s ever smiling face. “He’s got it made,” says Carlie. “He spends most days with grandma and grandpa, and even says he dreams about them at night. Living in Reno with my parents was a daunting idea at first, but it has turned out to be a delightful experience that I wish for every young family—to be close with their elders and have the proximity to enjoy time together.”

that Jan Evans hosts visitors from all over the world who come to see its award-winning juvenile rehabilitative programs. “When I first started at Jan Evans, a group came from Saudi Arabia to tour the facility. It really puts Reno on the map in terms of groundbreaking programming for juveniles in the correctional system. The staff at Jan Evans are remarkable in their level of service to these young people often facing deep issues of substance abuse and navigating academic challenges.” Carlie looks forward to a future teaching in the juvenile justice system as it evolves. “It all comes down to family support. Support for home families and

“C’mon, Get Happy!” The Partridges look forward not so much to growing their family in Reno, but to growing closer as a family here. “There are enough Partridges around,” jokes Rick. “We’re loving focusing on what we have,” he says, adding that Abe already has one tiny furry “sibling” in the form of their adopted dog, Calloway. “A full life is a life full of wonderful people and friends and neighbors who look out for each other,” says Joan. “We really have that here in Reno, more than we’ve ever had—anywhere!” My first impressions were right—they are a happy bunch, always on the verge of breaking into song.

Historic Reno Theater Reopens with Gusto! By Jenny Luna

T

he Lear Theater, the regal white building just across Riverside Drive from the Truckee River reopened this month to host the first performance in twelve years. TEDxReno deemed the theater—once a church and now listed as a historical property in the city, state and national registers—as an excellent location for their second annual event. On June 6, TEDxReno will feature inspirational and entertaining figures such as triathlete and author Danny Heinsohn, executive director of The Reno Generator Matt Schultz, and comedian and actor K-Von, to the theater’s stage for a day-long event of Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED). “The theater’s revitalization is crucial for the rebirth of downtown Reno and will also play an important role in our continued economic recovery,” --Doug Erwin, TEDxReno curator and Vice President of Entrepreneurial Development at the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN).

American architect Paul Revere Williams. For many years, the building served as a place of worship for the First Church of Christ, Scientist. One day during church, Renoites Moya Olsen Lear and her friend Edda Morrison noticed the building’s potential to be a theater. Moya, a philanthropist and the wife of Bill Lear, an aviation innovator, donated $1.1 million to the project of creating the Lear Theater. The community matched her donation with $1.3 million and the building was purchased in 1998. Moya’s vision of the historic and elegant building becoming a community hub for a variety of art performances will again become reality as Artown manages the Lear and plans to continue with needed renovations.

June is Historic Preservation Month.

The Lear Theater had been maintained by the Theater Coalition and hosted performances in 2001 and 2002. With renovations still needed to complete the theater, Artown took over for management in 2012 and the venue is now open for scheduled events only. Artown looks forward to having the building be an incorporated part of the July art festival and part of the renaissance of downtown Reno. The roots of the Lear Theater date back into the 1930’s when the neoclassical building was designed by renowned African

Reno Library is “Most Beautiful” - Spend Your Summer in the “Coolest Internal Space” By Jennifer Oliver • Photo By: Marc Tiar

iven the Downtown Reno Library’s exterior angled glass and copper panels, its internal space is a refreshing surprise. Green trees rising from floor to ceiling offer a reception into an atrium-like setting of leafy plants and running water from the fountain on the garden level. Because of its unique architecture and landscaping, Technology Services Librarian Marc Tiar felt inspired to enter the Downtown Reno Library into a national contest sponsored by Gale/ Cengage for the “Most Beautiful Library.” One of the categories was for “Coolest Internal Space” which seemed providential for the garden-like atmosphere. After one week of voting, the Downtown Reno came away as the winner in its category. With that award came a prize of $500. Tiar, who took his inspiration and initiative to enter the library into the contest, was rewarded by determining how the winnings will be spent. Education is near and dear to his heart, specifically the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative. The $500 award, paired with a $500 dollar anonymous cash donation, will be used to support STEM materials for the

Business SPOTLIGHT

All in the Family: The Grill restaurant in the Heart of Reno By Barbara Twitchell

W

alking up to the entrance of The Grill restaurant at Quail Corners on a Sunday evening, you might be surprised by what you find. A locked door. It’s no accident. The popular restaurant, located in the heart of Reno on South McCarran, is never open on Sundays or on any holiday, for that matter. The reason why is simple. It’s all about family. “Sundays and holidays are family days,” says Sam Francovich, owner of The Grill. “I want to be with my family and I want all of my employees to be able to be with theirs. If it were up to me, no restaurants would be open on those days.” That’s really quite a remarkable ideal to espouse in today’s competitive business market where the bottom line usually trumps family values. Without question, this is truly a family business in every sense of the word. Sam, his wife, Diane, and their daughter, Marisa, share ownership of The Grill, as well as all the business duties. They run the restaurant in a very personal, hands-on fashion, which usually includes one of them greeting the patrons upon arrival. The guests are warmly welcomed into the casually elegant setting. “A first time customer is like a new friend,” Sam says with a warm smile. “Repeat customers become like family.” After operating The Grill for almost 15 years, he is proud to add that many longtime locals are among his most faithful clients.

The Francovich family’s Reno roots run deeper than most in this community, dating back to 1859 when Sam’s great, great grandfather, Eli Francovich, moved here and opened the Wine House. Subsequently run by Sam’s grandfather, that combination bar/casino/restaurant operated for nearly 100 years before closing in 1957. So in many ways The Grill is a way of carrying on an old family tradition. But that’s not the only tradition this family likes to share. In 1867 Eli started making eggnog based on a family recipe he brought from his native Yugoslavia. Laced with just a touch of aged Kentucky bourbon and Jamaican rum, this distinctively light eggnog was given to friends as holiday gifts. It’s a family custom that has continued for five generations, most of that time making the beverage in a family member’s kitchen. In 1999, the extended family decided to take it to a new level – out of the kitchen and into their own distillery. Despite the change in location, it’s still very much a family business, Sam says. For two months from October to December each year, the Francovich relatives get together one day a week to create the holiday beverage, always using their old 1940s bottling machine in the process. The line usually includes at least three generations of the family. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s still a total blast,” Sam says. “And it’s important to us to carry on the tradition.” They took another risk a few years ago and brought one

more Francovich custom to market: manhattans. “Drinking manhattans in the evening was a family tradition that went back for generations,” Sam says. “The formula evolved from years of the family making and tasting manhattans. We got really good at it.” Working together to develop the formula larger scale production, the family became the product leader in manufacturing the first premixed manhattans marketed commercially. Even so, it’s still totally their own operation, hand mixed and bottled by the family in their local distillery. Available

in an award winning 1-liter size skyscraper gift bottle or in a convenient, economical easy-pour 750 milliliter bottle, both can be purchased at local liquor stores. In a world of large conglomerates, mass marketing, impersonalized business models and products that are more likely to come from across the globe than across town, it’s refreshing to see one family bucking the trend. And best of all, they are not only keeping their family traditions alive, they are trying to include us in that warm, wonderful circle as well.

Summer Safety for your Pets: 5 Tips for Happy Hounds

S

ummer is a great time to “paws” and enjoy friends and family, but it can also bring dangers to your pets.

The summer season in the Sierra foothills can be taxing on pets as the mercury rises into the triple digits with very low humidity. Your furry friends obviously need more hydration during this time, but there are several other things to be aware of to keep them safe in the heat. 1. Beware of Heatstroke If your dog or cat is acting extremely lethargic, it might be due to more than a little summer laziness. One of the first signs of heat stroke is lethargy. Other signs include excessive drooling, fever and in extreme cases, vomiting and collapse. Breeds with shorter noses such as pugs, boxers and bulldogs are especially vulnerable to heat stroke. Prevent heatstroke by keeping your pet inside, providing a shady area when outside and maintaining hydration. 2. Offer Cool-off Options Be sure to give your pet several ways to regulate their temperature. Leave a fan on and in a place where your pet can easily sit in front of it. Consider adding extra ice-cubes to your pet’s water bowl. Offer your pet frozen treats: you

can blend pet food with some peanut butter and freeze it, creating fun “doggie ice cream.” 3. Avoid Hot Sidewalks The easiest way to avoid complications from hot sidewalks is to take your pet on walks in the early morning or evening, avoiding the hot time of the day. Remember that your dog’s paws can become burned on pavement, blacktop and even on sand. 4. Summer Grooming Your pet will stay cool easier with an untangled, brushed and groomed coat. Don’t allow your pet’s fur to grow longer than one inch in the summer months. 5. A Hidden Danger in Coolant Pets are attracted to the scent of coolant that might leak from your vehicles in the summertime. Even a tiny amount of ingested coolant can make your pet very sick. If you suspect your pet has ingested coolant, take it to the vet immediately.
