Feature Story
Living & Giving in Reno: Hawley MacLean and Family on Local Roots and the Magic of Railroads Turning Passion and Vision into Charitable Giving in the Biggest Little City By Carlie Partridge
H
awley MacLean was a professional magician in his high school and college days. That same sense of magic is now reflected in the backyard railroad at his south Reno home, which features over 3,000 feet of track. The intricate model railroad is the bedrock of MacLean’s charity, Water and Rails. The organization puts on an annual charity event featuring a family-oriented tour of some of Reno’s most exquisite backyard ponds and railroads. Sharing the magic of railroads in this manner allows Water and Rails to benefit ALS of Northern Nevada, a group providing programs in support of Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Water and Rails organization has raised over $300,000 for ALS and other local charities since 2005. Hawley’s passion for trains began at an early age, while watching his father build steam engines as a hobby with none other than Walt Disney, a family friend. From his youth in Southern California to his current life in Reno, Hawley always maintained his train hobby. He reflects on his love for trains in his youth. “My father, Gordon, loved trains so much. He had a steam engine that was large enough to ride, and my parents would open up their yard almost every Sunday to neighborhood children so they could ride through the yard,” says Hawley. Roots and Railroads in Reno The MacLean family has deep roots in the Reno Tahoe region, many of the family’s members still residing in the area. Gordon and Janice MacLean, Hawley’s parents, purchased an Incline Lake cabin in 1947. They moved their family permanently to Incline Lake in the late 1960’s from their previous home in Tarzana, CA. Hawley attended University of Nevada, Reno, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1989 and his since resided in the Biggest Little City. The backyard railroad endeavor got its start about 20 years ago, when the house where Hawley lived experienced some fence damage. Hawley then met his neighbor, Tom Hubbard, who told Hawley to purchase the wood and he could fix it. 4
August 2014
Hawley enlisted the help of Tom to construct the railroad based on ideas from an article he’d read on garden railroads. Though Tom was not all that interested in railroads, his building skills were instrumental in its creation, and over the years he became a dear family friend. Thus, in the late 1990’s, Hawley’s first backyard railroad was born and named the Sierra and Kettle Valley Railroad. When Hawley MacLean and his family moved to their current home a few years back, they took much of the garden railroad to the new location. The railroad has since expanded significantly, and is now called the Alpine & Western Pacific Railroad. Hawley’s two sons, Harris (14) and Will (9), have followed in their father’s footsteps with an interest in garden railroads. They both enjoy teaching others about the railroad and its operation, and Harris even has his own train—the Santa Fe Super Chief. Harris is an advanced skier as well as a football player. Will is an avid horseback rider, training locally at Franktown Meadows, the MacLean family’s 40-acre equestrian center in Washoe Valley. He has won numerous championships both locally and nationally. Community Endeavors and Community Ties Hawley is the president and founder of MacLean Financial, a full service financial planning firm starting their 24th year of business. He is also the co-founder of Heritage Bank and serves on its board. Hawley is the fourth generation in his family to be in the financial services industry and he greatly enjoys being a part of the Reno community through his business endeavors.
Beyond business, the MacLean family has further ties to the local communities. The MacLean family gifted the MacLean Observatory Complex to UNR, located at the Redfield Campus. Hawley’s girlfriend, Jill Savery, is the CEO of Bristlecone Strategies, a sustainability consulting company providing guidance to sports organizations, major sporting events and companies. She will teach an MBA seminar course on business and sustainability at UNR this fall, and travels internationally for

her role as a leader in this field. Jill holds a Master’s Degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and focuses on areas like green building, green materials, waste management, sustainable food and transportation as they relate to business and major sporting events. An Olympic Golden Future for Reno Tahoe? Hawley has been involved with the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition for several years. He is passionate about promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Movement in the Reno Tahoe Region. “Through the Olympics, we can promote our region on an international level, support international Olympics related events, and put Tahoe on the map for potentially hosting the Winter Olympics in the future,” says Hawley, adding that this would likely be in 2026 or 2030 as it takes at least a decade of planning along with the intricacies of working with the Olympic Committee. It was through his involvement with the Olympic Coalition that Hawley met Jill, who has an extremely close link to the Olympic Games herself: she was a gold medalist in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in synchronized swimming. Hawley Maclean and his family look forward to ever deepening ties in the Reno area and a commitment to community service through business, charity and sharing their love for the railroad that continues to bring joy to local folks of all ages.

From the desk of Greg Jensen, Esq.
What is the difference between God and a Lawyer? *To find out the answer, read to the bottom of this article.
The Top 6 Estate Planning Myths Throughout my years of practice as an estate planning attorney, I have run across many misconceptions about wills, trusts, probate and estate taxes. Below you will find a list of what I consider to be the top six myths. 1. I don’t need an estate plan because my family will “do the right thing.” While you may feel confident that your family will “do the right thing” after you die and divvy things up in a fair and equitable manner without any major fights. I’m here to tell you that this simply will not happen. Strange and sad things happen when family and money collide without any written plans. A revocable living trust created with the help of an estate planning attorney can insure that your estate will go where you want it to go after you die. A Will is going to cost you more $ in legal fees and you’ll still go to Probate.
2. I don’t need an estate plan because my spouse will inherit everything. This may or may not be true depending upon many different factors, including: A). How your assets are titled; B). Who you have named as the beneficiaries of your life insurance and retirement accounts (IRAs and 401ks); C). The laws of the state where you live at the time of your death; and D). The laws of the state where you own real estate at the time of your death. 3. Only the mega wealthy need a complicated estate plan. Total MYTH. If you have a home, car and bank account, a trust is very affordable and is for you. If you are in a second or later marriage, you are single without any children, you are in a committed relationship but choose not to marry, or if you want to leave part or all of your estate to charity, then chances are that regardless of your net worth, you will need more than just a basic estate plan. 4. Probate really isn’t all that bad. The bottom line is probate is very costly and time consuming, so why would you want to leave your loved ones at the mercy of a probate judge who knows nothing about you, your finances or your family and pay more in legal fees? 5. “Death taxes” will take a big bite out of your estate. If you are talking about federal estate taxes, then this could not be farther from the truth. With a $5 million+ federal estate tax exemption, it has been estimated that less than 1/10% of estates will be subject to federal estate taxes. Nevada has NO death or inheritance tax.
Plan Your Estate Before It’s Too Late Wills - Trusts - Probate
Jensen Law Group, Ltd 6190 Mae Anne Ave. 10580 No. McCarran Blvd. Ste. 2 #115-382 Reno, NV 89523 Reno, NV 89503 Ph: 775-624-5751 Email: info@jensenlawgroup-reno.com www.jensenlawgroup-reno.com
6. Once your estate plan is done, it’s done for good. I have seen this myth rear its ugly head often. Why? Because things change. Do you own the same home you did 5 years ago? Have you remarried? Has someone named in your plan passed away? We live in complicated times with complicated laws and have complicated families. Our financial picture is often shifts in our lives. So an estate plan that worked 5 years ago, let alone 10 or 15, may not work effectively today. A free consult with an Estate Planning attorney can easily identify if your plan needs revision or replacement. The bottom line - The days of “simple wills” and “easy probate” are long gone and have been replaced with complicated lives, finances and laws, and under these circumstances one size certainly cannot fit all or even most. Estate planning is serious business and a must for anyone concerned about what will happen to them if they become incapacitated and what will happen to their loved ones after they die. BTW…God knows he’s not a lawyer.

Endless Summer: 6 Beauty Tips & Tricks for Hot Weather By Julie Szymaniak
S
ummer often takes the blame for common beauty conundrums. From frizzy hair to sunburn, the season can interfere with putting our best face (and hair) forward. Here are some tried, tested and effective ways to beat the heat and beautify! 1. Protect Your Hair Add conditioner in your hair and tie it up or braid it before you dive into the pool. The chlorine water and ocean water can strip your hair of nutrients and make it dry. Even the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe can impact your hair’s health. A little protection goes a long way towards preventing hair disasters from swimming. 2. Summer is for Banana Splits, not Split Ends You can prevent split ends by getting frequent trims. Every 6-8 weeks is ideal for most people, and trimming is a sure fire way to reduce damage from breakage, brushing and combing. 3. Endings and Beginnings You can begin a summer hair routine by recognizing that conditioner is actually meant for the ends of your hair and not for your scalp. Shampoo is for your scalp to cleanse debris and oils. Conditioner is designed to give a moisturizing boost to the ends of your hair, where your hairs natural oils don’t easily travel. This technique will also help keep volume on the top of your hair and not weigh it down with conditioner which can cause a “flat” look. 4. Sunscreen for your Hair In summertime, seek hair products that include an SPF rating of 15 or above in order to prevent your scalp from burning in the hot sierra sunshine. Products like Tonic Lotion and Prep Lotion from Bumble and Bumble actually have added SPF for this reason. Think of your hair as an extension of your scalp skin and treat it kindly!
5. Tangled Up No More Hot weather and summer activities can mean added tangles in the hair. Take extra time each day to untangle. Comb or brush your long hair at least twice a day, paying special attention to the nape of the neck where long hair tangles tend to gather. 6. Beauty Tips are not Only for Women Men: if you want that surfer hair without the added fluff, don’t rinse out your conditioner this summer. Conditioner, for dry fluffy hair can act as a powerful de-fluffer. Socialite Salon wishes you a happy, healthy, frizz-free summer! Julie has been in the hair industry for 12 years and trained with some of the top and most creative haircut and color professionals in Reno, Chicago and New York. Nevada Art Museum Spotlight: The Emancipation Proclamation and Nevada State History Did you know: •
Less than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which would free all slaves, he faced a re-election bid.
•
To win re-election he needed the votes of an additional anti-slavery, pro-Union state, one that would help push through the Thirteenth Amendment to abolish slavery.
•
Nevada rose to the occasion, urgently pressing toward statehood, with a mandate to ensure freedom and liberty for generations to come.
•
The Nevada State Constitution was approved just in time to help strengthen the Union and Lincoln’s position.
•
On October 26, 1864, Gov. Nye sent a 175-page transcription of the Constitution by telegraph. The final page shows the total word count (16,543) and cost ($4313.27—or $59,229 in today’s dollars) of the transmission.
•
The Emancipation was the first step in Nevada’s journey toward “Battle Born” statehood.

just a 4.75% listing fee, Myer Realty guarantees to be the lowest priced full-service brokerage in town. Myer Realty is not a discount brokerage, rather a full service brokerage at a discount rate. We guarantee the same as all of our competitors, i.e. best service, most money for your home in the least amount of time, raving fan service. The kind of expertise necessary to navigate a multitude of real estate “curveballs.” We have a comprehensive understanding of our local market, having experienced tremendous ups and downs. We are helping our sellers capitalize on the surge in home values while helping buyers to take advantage of historically low interest rates,” says Scott.
