Feature Story
Charlotte and Dennis Eckmeyer: A Vision for Reno and Vino
The Eckmeyers share their story of life, family and a passion for wine in the Biggest Little City By Carlie Partridge
The Eckmeyers: a Passion and a Vision for Reno and Vino Charlotte and Dennis Eckmeyer are proud parents and longtime Reno residents. Charlotte is the owner of Eckmeyer Insurance Services and has been in the insurance industry in Northern Nevada for over 25 years, and Dennis is a financial adviser at New York Life. Dennis has lived in Reno since 1968 and Charlotte came in the 70’s from the Bay Area. “We can’t imagine having raised our family anywhere else,” says Dennis, who studied agriculture at UNR. “The sense of community here is hard to beat, the school system is wonderful and people help one another.” The couple’s 3 children all went to both Pine Middle School and Galena High School and all moved on to attend out of state colleges. Their eldest, Shannon, 28, attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where she studied Environmental Law. She then attended law school in Vermont, and returned to the Lake Tahoe area after passing the California Bar Exam. She began to focus her career on preserving the beauty of the area as a policy analyst for Keep Tahoe Blue, the League to Save Lake Tahoe. Their daughter Ali, 25, graduated from the University of Washington in Communications, where she was an officer in her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. Ali was heavily involved in the UW’s Pan-Hellenic Association. She studied abroad in Rome, caught the travel bug and is currently seeing the world as a flight attendant for Skywest airlines. Their son Tyler, 21, is graduating this month from the University of Oregon as a Cinema Studies major, minoring in Media Studies. Tyler envisions continuing his passion for analyzing and editing films after he graduates. The 4
Eckmeyers have a strong passion for their childrens’ education and continue to be extremely proud of their achievements. The Eckmeyers maintain a strong presence in the Reno community, serving on several local boards. “This community has given so much to our family and we want to give back to the community,” says Charlotte. Charlotte is an enthusiastic member of the Historic Reno Preservation Society, an organization devoted to celebrating Reno’s rich architectural history. She laughs that, “yes, there’s an app for that!” The Society released an app last month in tandem with Reno’s 111th birthday. The free app, Twentieth Century Club, provides a virtual map to help visitors tour Reno’s significant historical sites, complete with themed tours and historical photos. The couple’s passion for Reno history and urban renewal is also evident in the office space they renovated in the Wells Business District, the current home of Eckmeyer Insurance Services. Dennis also participates on the board for SARA, Solutions and Resources Association, which connects caregivers with resources and referrals including financial services and care and hospice services. Vino and a Vision Their careers have grown in Reno and so has their backyard vineyard with nearly 50 white grape vines—a testament to their hobby that has merged with a much bigger vision for the region. Their very own vineyard yielded several cases of wine last year. The Eckmeyers’ love for wine and viniculture has found broader expression in their involvement with Nevada Wines and Vines, a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of viniculture in our area. Charlotte serves as Marketing Director July 2014
for the organization while Dennis serves as Vice President. Dennis says their involvement with the wine community has far transcended just having a wine cellar. “Our vision and our goal is to build a future industry in Northern Nevada around viniculture and winemaking,” he explains. “Most people don’t realize that vineyards can thrive in our region, not unlike our neighbors to the north in Eastern Washington, where a thriving wine industry has grown.”
“We envision a future for Reno where the hills are lined with beautiful rows of vineyards and we’ve established a strong educational community around viniculture.”

Growing Grapes, Planting Seeds for a Future Charlotte and Dennis explain that the future of viniculture in Reno is linked with UNR. “In 2013, our non-profit planted over 1800 Riesling wine vines at UNR’s Main Station Farm. We will be donating half the proceeds back to the university to invest in future viniculture programming.” Charlotte explains that they have been inspired and taught by Professor Grant Cramer, whose Nevada Wine programs include extensive research into grape growing as well as viniculture courses and wine tasting events for the community. “He’s absolutely amazing and instrumental in this vision for viniculture in Northern Nevada,” says Charlotte. The couple is pleased that their recent application for a grant from the Nevada Department of Agriculture was warmly received, and they were awarded a $40,000 grant even though they had applied for a $25,000 grant. “There is growing interest in viniculture on many fronts. We can engage the university and create an academic research community around wine growing. We can grow an industry with the potential to create jobs, and of course, we can create delicious wine,” explains Dennis. Nevada Vines and Wines is devoted to supporting Nevada wine lovers and entrepreneurs alike, providing resources to connect backyard vineyard enthusiasts with researchers and valuable consulting services. Their vision includes eventually providing scholarship funds for students to study viniculture at the UNR and foster the widespread cultivation of vineyards

in Nevada’s unique and very specific growing conditions. Dennis explained that their process involves facing some legal obstacles. “We are forming a political action committee to work on adjusting certain laws that currently prohibit the sale of commercial wine in Reno. The law prevents the production and sale of wine in cities with over 100,000 residents. The outlook looks good as last year, breweries and distilleries in our area were able to change similar laws. It’s exciting—it’s a grassroots wine movement,” said Dennis. The Eckmeyers’ South Reno home, with its vines and bocce ball court, provides a respite from their busy days. Naturally, they enjoy a glass of vino and reflect on the richness of Reno and its surrounding region. “The vines we planted at UNR were from Eastern Washington, a place that inspires our interest in vitalizing a wine industry here. They have a similar climate there and now have a thriving wine community like the one we envision for Reno,” says Charlotte. Dennis added that the vision is also a “green” one. “This would save water and energy by growing grapes and producing wine locally. It’s all new, there’s no template for this, but it’s exciting and it’s all happening. Best of all we get to give back to the university.” The couple would like to add that they are exceedingly grateful for the viniculture knowledge and mentorship of Dr. Grant Cramer at UNR. With the influence of Dr. Cramer and by attracting other luminaries in the viniculture profession, the Eckmeyers would love to see the Silver State create a wine industry of its own—on par with those that have emerged in Washington and Oregon. Perhaps we will soon keep our eyes out for the “Biggest Little. . . Vineyard.”

Nevada Vines and Wines is a volunteer-based nonprofit with over 180 members. Our group was initiated to promote viniculture and winemaking in Northern Nevada. We are partnering with individuals, groups and the UNR to promote our vision. In the spring of 2013, our group planted 1800 Riesling wine vines at UNR’s main station farm. Our ultimate goal at the farm is to plant additional acres with different varieties and to establish a commercial winery with substantial proceeds going back to the university. The World’s Eyes will be on Reno during the Reno-Tahoe Open
L
ater this month the PGA TOUR’s Reno-Tahoe Open celebrates its 16th birthday, and what a party it will be! Beyond having the world’s best golfers make their way to our community to compete in one of the world’s most stunning settings, Nicklaus’ signature-designed Montreux Golf & Country Club, the tournament promoters also ensure the event offers something to appeal to every member of the family. The event also offers a healthy economic boost to the area. From a bounce house for kids to a wine walk for adults, the Reno-Tahoe Open is an event that the community has increasingly embraced over the years. Attendance over the past five years is up over 100% due in part to these fan enhancements and to the growing appeal of the players who compete at Montreux. Players like John Daly, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Padraig Harrington and Camilo Villegas have all recently competed in the event, and many of today’s brightest stars on tour actually started their careers in Reno. You may recognize names like Adam Scott, Jason Day and Luke Donald all on the roster of former competitors. Up-and-comer number one ranked amateur Patrick Rodgers has committed to playing in this month’s tournament, giving fans the opportunity to see tomorrow’s top athletes today.

Putting Reno on the International Map The tournament offers a worldwide platform for the Reno area. The presence of the PGA TOUR partnering with Reno offers major benefits to the area. First, the international television exposure to over 220 countries with more than 12 hours of air time on the Golf Channel will reach a worldwide audience—and don’t’ forget about reruns.
The positive promotion that accompanies the PGA Tour showcases the spectacular landscapes of the Sierras and the rolling hills of Montreux is something Reno can be proud of. Above and beyond this positive branding opportunity for the community, there is an economic benefit to hosting the PGA tour to the tune of $15-$20 million. From hotel rooms to restaurants, the tour will add to the area’s bottom line. The Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation will also further benefit the local community. To date, the Reno-Tahoe Open has given back over $2.85 million to area charities, a number that is anticipated to reach the $3 million mark this year. Be a part of the action and see for yourself what the rest of the world will watch from their living rooms. Come to the Reno-Tahoe Open July 31 to August 3 at Montreux, where tickets are just $20 (kids under age 15 and military are free) with sponsorships still available. those serving. At the inaugural ball for George W. Bush in Reno, I met the Blue Star Mothers and decided to start a local chapter. Who are the Blue Star Mothers? The Blue Star Mothers began in 1942 with just a handful of concerned mothers. The Blue Star Mothers became a permanent organization when they reached 1,000 members across the country. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress. Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during war times. Local Moms Serving Troops Our local Truckee Meadows Chapter currently has 65 member mothers. We currently assist over 60 US Troops, 25 of which are deployed around the world. Our work involves working with the City of Sparks in presenting the Hometown Hero Banners seen in downtown Sparks between the Nugget and the Movie Theatre. These banners represent our children, young men and women who lived and went to school locally and who chose to answer the call to serve their country. You can find us at most Military related events in the community providing information on Military support and encouraging military mothers to join our ranks. We have built homes for our wounded thru Homes for our Troops and Defenders of Freedom. We fed 5,000 US Marines as they traveled thru the Reno area in July of 2011 for their annual training. We also attend the funerals of fallen servicemen and honor their families. We work with the casualty officer to ensure the family has support both during and after the service. The 1st Gold Star Banner I presented, my boy had just deployed for the 1st time. This is a labor of love.

What is Qigong? By Bruce Knowlton
Q
igong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced “chee” and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. The second word, Gong, pronounced gung, means accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy, it is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality. Qigong is an integration of physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused intentions. Qigong practices can be classified as martial, medical, or spiritual. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture, (whether moving or stationary), breathing techniques, and mental focus. Some practices increase the Qi; others circulate it, use it to cleanse and heal the body, store it, or emit Qi to help heal others. Practices vary from the soft internal styles such as Tai Chi; to the external, vigorous styles such as Kung Fu. However, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. Like any other system of health care, Qigong is not a panacea, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. Qigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most exercises
Nursery aNd LaNdscape
do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mind intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added, the benefits of exercise increase exponentially. The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Those who maintain a consistent practice of Qigong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality, maintain health even into old age and helps speed recovery from illness. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection. People do Qigong to maintain health, heal their bodies, calm their minds, and reconnect with their spirit. When these three aspects of our being are integrated, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style, which brings greater harmony, stability, and enjoyment There are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. I provide Qigong classes for children, senior citizens, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club. Qigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit, regardless of ability, age, belief system or life circumstances. Anyone can enrich their lives by adding Qigong to their daily routine. Children learning to channel their energy and develop increased concentration; office workers learning Qigong to reduce stress; seniors participating in gentle movements to enhance balance and their quality of life; caregivers embracing a practice to develop their ability to help others; prisons instituting Qigong programs to restore balance in inmates lives; midwives using Qigong techniques to ease child birth. I provide group or private lessons.

Am I Swinging the Right Clubs? By Brian Gilchrist
W
hether you are planning to one day play on the tour yourself, or if you just want bragging rights over the friends and family you golf with, GolfTEC is a great place to shop if you’re looking to improve your game. Important to point out is that GolfTEC is a privately owned and operated franchise located on South Virginia here in Reno. Owner, Jay Jilot came highly recommended to me by a business colleague and fellow golfer. What impressed me most about the facility were the people and the cohesive and combined knowledge they have to offer as a team. The next thing that really intrigued me was the state of the art technology designed not only to find a simple fundamental swing flaw, but also to find out which clubs you should be using and which adjustments need to be made. Jay set me up with the very capable golf coach and club fitter Gaylen Christean to go through GolfTEC’s 60 minute swing evaluation. The session is designed to diagnose your golf swing using several technologies and approaches. In a session with Gaylen I would quickly learn how much more there is to a golf swing and choosing clubs than I’d known. Not only would he analyze my current set and give me pointers, but he would be providing me with a map towards mastery. I learned that golf equipment is extremely important for improving my game. GolfTEC’s approach includes attention to body posture and body type including providing ideal measurements for clubs. From hand length to the length of knuckles to the floor, certain measurements are key to getting the optimum fit. They also use a state of the art unbiased club recommendation software, which uses the top of the line launch monitor that looks at things like optimum launch angle, spin, and more to provide you with the best club for your particular swing. Not only do small details like the grip have a big impact on the swing and ball flight, but things like spin and launch that we never really think about have that much more effect which is where these guys go above and beyond. Gaylen helped me find my ideal club by watching my swing
14
and noticing details like my lie angle which is where the heel or toe of the club contacts the ground, and getting not only the shaft angle but also the club head speed in motion. All of this combines to provide a profile that allows GolfTEC to create my best possible club, personally customized to the specifics of my swing. The experts at GolfTEC know the game inside out and they’re at the top of their game as far as technology goes. They can help you with driver fittings, wedge fittings or iron fittings as part of their comprehensive club fitting service. In just an hour with the GolfTEC experts, I learned a tremendous amount about my swing and finally found a club that will be a true ally on the course. This type of advantage can help me engage more with my passion for golf. Perhaps most impressive was the raw improvement that we could see not only through the results of the shot, but we could clearly see a vast improvement in the fundamental execution of my swing from the beginning of the session to the end. It truly helps when you can break down your swing frame by frame on an interactive video screen. There was way too much movement and flex in my knees swaying my body from centered to a position where my hips were lagging slightly behind the swing. As soon as I kept my lower half still as Gaylen instructed, my hips opened much more naturally and freely. I also had much more control over the club head and was able to induce more power turning off the inside of my rear foot. I came away understanding specific elements of my swing I had previously been unaware of. The experience was professional, enjoyable and profoundly educational. I could go on and on about the improvements that I have made personally, but the truth is that we all have unique adjustments that are needed within our own game and most likely within our own bag. With minor adjustments to my technique and a huge upgrade on equipment, I finally have a full set of clubs fit to my body. Now I can just swing and let the club do the work rather than trying to adjust my stance and swing to fit my clubs.
