eslie has been in the real estate industry since 2002. Her work experience prior to entering real estate has served her well as both a fierce negotiator and incredibly successful agent. Her first year in real estate she closed 53 real estate transactions representing mostly buyers and was nominated as “Rookie of the Year” by her peers in her local Multiple Listing Service. She has sold more homes each year since. Leslie’s persistence and tenacity served her very well through the real estate bubble and the surge of short sales. In 2012, she was ranked #6 in the Reno/Tahoe Real Estate Market doing Short Sales almost exclusively. Short Sales are very difficult transactions that require developing a strategy with the bank to get the homeowner relieved from excessive debt on the home due to a change in financial circumstances, decline in market value, or simply life changes. Leslie’s client testimonials and never ending stream of past client referrals
speak volumes about how she handles very difficult situations. Luxury homes are a very special segment of the real estate market. Each home requires a strategy regarding how and to whom it is marketed, and a strong agent to service the property with the attention and presentation it deserves. Leslie’s Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing is a definite asset when it comes to the creative portion of marketing high end homes. Luxury homes are a lifestyle, not just another property. Leslie is an agent that understands this and is able to portray it both in marketing and in person. Leslie is committed to delivering respectful and informative assistance to her clients. Her passion for creative problem solving and collaborative perseverance is essential to accomplishing your real estate goals. And last but not least, Leslie is fun to work with.

“The manner in which Leslie Henderson managed the complicated and tedious process of short selling my home in Reno was one of the most impressive displays of professional competence I have ever seen. No lesser words could accurately describe what she did. When I arrived in her office at 10 am for our initial consult, I was feeling a bit tight because I knew there were several explanatory letters and financial forms that would be difficult to complete accurately and take weeks. When I left four hours later all the papers needed from me were done. I couldn’t believe it! Although the short sale process would run its course over the next three months, I was finished except for signing and notarizing certain documents Leslie would occasionally send me. We closed right on time and all the bank statements about not pursuing any additional payments were in place. Thank you Leslie. Somehow you made something very difficult look easy.” Robert Winquist, Satisfied Customer

A Vision for Reno and a Passion for Vino: Meet your Neighbors, Chuck Harder and Sheryl Eilenfeldt
C
huck Harder and Sheryl Eilenfeldt are a couple with a passion for Reno. . . and for Vino. Their Lakeridge home now has over 80 grape vines thriving in the backyard including Riesling, Merlot and white varieties. They purchased the home in 2011 shortly after the devastating Caughlin Ranch fire. The home was a foreclosure and had been partially gutted with no roof or siding. Amazingly, the home had dodged the devastating fire which had burned homes and vegetation surrounding it. Chuck had done major remodels in the past and saw an opportunity. “It’s truly amazing this house didn’t burn down,” says Chuck, who now grows grape vines on the hillside land where Junipers once grew. “The fire destroyed all the Junipers in the area, so the barren hillside was perfect for vines,” he explains. Their house is just below the Steamboat Ditch Trail, so many hikers and joggers get a chance to see the backyard vines and the remodeled home. “So many people in Reno might not realize that their very own neighbors are growing wine grapes. Maybe people who walk by will see our vines and get curious,” says Chuck. 6
Building a Life in Reno When he arrived to Reno 15 years ago from Los Angeles for a business opportunity, Chuck began to appreciate the beauty of the Sierras. Sheryl was living in Carson City; she’s a retired employee of the State of Nevada and currently works as an Alternative Sentencing Consultant, alongside defense attorneys to provide fact-finding reports for cases. “My work involves creating alternatives in sentencing in cases where the individual could benefit from rehabilitation or other services,” explains Sheryl. The couple met
through friends and began their “officially engaged” life together with a shared love for travel, friends, events and of course— wine. “I’m definitely a wine enthusiast,” laughs Chuck, “In fact, I originally wanted to purchase vineyard land in Argentina and travelled there to look at options. As it turns out, the Reno area has a similar climate to the winemaking regions of Argentina. I never thought I’d be growing wine grapes here.” Sheryl shares that the couple began taking wine growing and tasting courses with Dr. Grant Cramer at UNR, adopted vines July 2014
to care for at UNR’s Main Station Farm and began to enjoy a community of others who shared a passion for all things vino. “We’ve met wonderful people through our involvement with wine, dear friends,” she says. Sheryl and Chuck are involved with a unique non-profit organization devoted to promoting viniculture in the Reno area. Nevada Vines and Wines is devoted to supporting Nevada wine lovers and entrepreneurs alike, providing resources to connect backyard vineyard enthusiasts with researchers and valuable consulting services. Chuck serves as a board member for the organization and Sheryl as secretary. Their vision includes eventually providing scholarship funds for students to study viniculture at the UNR and foster the widespread cultivation of vineyards in Nevada’s unique and very specific growing conditions. In 2013, the organization planted over 18,000 vines at UNR’s Main Station farm and will be donating half of the proceeds from the wine to the University. Another vision of Nevada Vines and Wines is a future in which jobs are created around a wine industry, fostering
economic growth and jobs in Northern Nevada similar to what’s been achieved in Eastern Washington and Oregon. Sheryl and Chuck know it’s possible to grow delicious wine grapes and enjoy The ultimate goal of Nevada Vines and Wines is to support a burgeoning viniculture academic community as well as make progress towards creating a future for Reno that includes its very own “wine country.”
the hands-on experience. “Thanks to Dr. Grant Cramer, we have amazing resources here in Reno to help us learn about all things wine. We’d love for people to know that it’s possible to grow wine grapes in their very own neighborhood. It’s not extremely time-intensive or difficult, and it takes a lot less water than most people imagine. With a little weeding and a lot of love, the wine grapes can thrive,” says
Chuck. Sheryl likewise envisions a Reno where more people are growing grapes and interested in wine. “This could be a tremendous new chapter for Reno,” she says, “one that could change lives.” Chuck is happy to share his knowledge of wine growing and his excitement to be part of the wine community in Reno. “Naturally, Reno has its drawbacks for growing wine grapes,” says Chuck. “However, UNR is working to identify and study exactly what types of grapes can survive and thrive in our region.” Chuck continues to explain the possibility that changes in climate patterns could eventually make Reno as ripe as the famous wine destination Napa for growing conditions. “Northern Nevada might awaken eventually to a destiny as a wine growing region.” When they’re not enjoying their Lakeridge home, the couple enjoys travelling, often in Chuck’s plane—he’s a pilot. They travel the country but love returning to their now-entirely-renovated home. Looking over their backyard vines, the couple reflects on the joy of living in Reno and being involved with Vino. “The vines just went crazy on the hillside,” says Chuck. “Amazing to think that fire nearly

Nevada Vines and Wines is a volunteer-based nonprofit with over 180 members. Our group was initiated to promote viniculture and winemaking in Northern Nevada. We are partnering with individuals, groups and the UNR to promote our vision. In the spring of 2013, our group planted 1800 Riesling wine vines at UNR’s main station farm. Our ultimate goal at the farm is to plant additional acres with different varieties and to establish a commercial winery with substantial proceeds going back to the university. The World’s Eyes will be on Reno during the Reno-Tahoe Open
L
ater this month the PGA TOUR’s Reno-Tahoe Open celebrates its 16th birthday, and what a party it will be! Beyond having the world’s best golfers make their way to our community to compete in one of the world’s most stunning settings, Nicklaus’ signature-designed Montreux Golf & Country Club, the tournament promoters also ensure the event offers something to appeal to every member of the family. The event also offers a healthy economic boost to the area. From a bounce house for kids to a wine walk for adults, the Reno-Tahoe Open is an event that the community has increasingly embraced over the years. Attendance over the past five years is up over 100% due in part to these fan enhancements and to the growing appeal of the players who compete at Montreux. Players like John Daly, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Padraig Harrington and Camilo Villegas have all recently competed in the event, and many of today’s brightest stars on tour actually started their careers in Reno. You may recognize names like Adam Scott, Jason Day and Luke Donald all on the roster of former competitors. Up-and-comer number one ranked amateur Patrick Rodgers has committed to playing in this month’s tournament, giving fans the opportunity to see tomorrow’s top athletes today. Enjoying Golf, Honoring Local Heroes Beyond amazing golf and fan-favorites like the Pack Pavilion and Food Trucks, the tournament boasts new additions in 2014. This year the tournament offers an enhanced salute to troops and first responders in the Nature’s Bakery Heroes Hangout, a luxury suite on the 9th green of Montreux featuring hosted food and beverages for the military. First Responders are also invited to enjoy this special venue. This year alongside the military the Reno-Tahoe Open and Nature’s Bakery invite police, fire and EMT are invited to enjoy the PGA TOUR from the comfort of this hospitality tent from July 31-August 3. This tent will be an exciting addition to existing programs such as Women’s Day presented by Barrick Gold taking place on July 27 or the Patriots’ Luncheon benefiting the Veterans Guest House coming up on July 29. With so much happening within one short week,
it’s a whirlwind of activity that the tournament team and its hundreds of volunteers are looking forward to providing later this month, with key competition days being Thursday, July 31 through Sunday, August 3. Putting Reno on the International Map The tournament offers a worldwide platform for the Reno area. The presence of the PGA TOUR partnering with Reno offers major benefits to the area. First, the international television exposure to over 220 countries with more than 12 hours of air time on the Golf Channel will reach a worldwide audience—and don’t’ forget about reruns. The positive promotion that accompanies the PGA Tour showcases the spectacular landscapes of the Sierras and the rolling hills of Montreux is something Reno can be proud of. Above and beyond this positive branding opportunity for the community, there is an economic benefit to hosting the PGA tour to the tune of $15-$20 million. From hotel rooms to restaurants, the tour will add to the area’s bottom line. The Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation will also further benefit the local community. To date, the Reno-Tahoe Open has given back over $2.85 million to area charities, a number that is anticipated to reach the $3 million mark this year. Be a part of the action and see for yourself what the rest of the world will watch from their living rooms. Come to the Reno-Tahoe Open July 31 to August 3 at Montreux, where tickets are just $20 (kids under age 15 and military are free) with sponsorships still available. For more information, visit www.RenoTahoeOpen.com or call 775.322.3900.

Am I Swinging the Right Clubs? By Brian Gilchrist
W
hether you are planning to one day play on the tour yourself, or if you just want bragging rights over the friends and family you golf with, GolfTEC is a great place to shop if you’re looking to improve your game. Important to point out is that GolfTEC is a privately owned and operated franchise located on South Virginia here in Reno. Owner, Jay Jilot came highly recommended to me by a business colleague and fellow golfer. What impressed me most about the facility were the people and the cohesive and combined knowledge they have to offer as a team. The next thing that really intrigued me was the state of the art technology designed not only to find a simple fundamental swing flaw, but also to find out which clubs you should be using and which adjustments need to be made. Jay set me up with the very capable golf coach and club fitter Gaylen Christean to go through GolfTEC’s 60 minute swing evaluation. The session is designed to diagnose your golf swing using several technologies and approaches. In a session with Gaylen I would quickly learn how much more there is to a golf swing and choosing clubs than I’d known. Not only would he analyze my current set and give me pointers, but he would be providing me with a map towards mastery. I learned that golf equipment is extremely important for improving my game. GolfTEC’s approach includes attention to body posture and body type including providing ideal measurements for clubs. From hand length to the length of knuckles to the floor, certain measurements are key to getting the optimum fit. They also use a state of the art unbiased club recommendation software, which uses the top of the line launch monitor that looks at things like optimum launch angle, spin, and more to provide you with the best club for your particular swing. Not only do small details like the grip have a big impact on the swing and ball flight, but things like spin and launch that we never really think about have that much more effect which is where these guys go above and beyond. Gaylen helped me find my ideal club by watching my swing and noticing details like my lie angle which is where the heel or toe of the club contacts the ground, and getting not only the shaft angle but also the club head speed in motion. All of this combines to provide a profile that allows GolfTEC to create my best possible club, personally customized to the specifics of my swing. The experts at GolfTEC know the game inside out and they’re at the top of their game as far as technology goes. They can help you with driver fittings, wedge fittings or iron fittings as part of their comprehensive club fitting service. In just an hour with the GolfTEC experts, I learned a tremendous amount about my swing and finally found a club that will be a true ally on the course. This type of advantage can help me engage more
with my passion for golf. Perhaps most impressive was the raw improvement that we could see not only through the results of the shot, but we could clearly see a vast improvement in the fundamental execution of my swing from the beginning of the session to the end. It truly helps when you can break down your swing frame by frame on an interactive video screen. There was way too much movement and flex in my knees swaying my body from centered to a position where my hips were lagging slightly behind the swing. As soon as I kept my lower half still as Gaylen instructed, my hips opened much more naturally and freely. I also had much more control over the club head and was able to induce more power turning off the inside of my rear foot. I came away understanding specific elements of my swing I had previously been unaware of. The experience was professional, enjoyable and profoundly educational. I could go on and on about the improvements that I have made personally, but the truth is that we all have unique adjustments that are needed within our own game and most likely within our own bag. With minor adjustments to my technique and a huge upgrade on equipment, I finally have a full set of clubs fit to my body. Now I can just swing and let the club do the work rather than trying to adjust my stance and swing to fit my clubs.

He immediately went off to boot camp, after which he and his family were stationed in Ft. Drum NY while attached to the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army. those serving. At the inaugural ball for George W. Bush in Reno, I met the Blue Star Mothers and decided to start a local chapter. Who are the Blue Star Mothers? The Blue Star Mothers began in 1942 with just a handful of concerned mothers. The Blue Star Mothers became a permanent organization when they reached 1,000 members across the country. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress. Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during war times. Local Moms Serving Troops Our local Truckee Meadows Chapter currently has 65 member mothers. We currently assist over 60 US Troops, 25 of which are deployed around the world. Our work involves working with the City of Sparks in presenting the Hometown Hero Banners seen in downtown Sparks between the Nugget and the Movie Theatre. These banners represent our children, young men and women who lived and went to school locally and who chose to answer the call to serve their country. You can find us at most Military related events in the community providing information on Military support and encouraging military mothers to join our ranks. We have built homes for our wounded thru Homes for our Troops and Defenders of Freedom. We fed 5,000 US Marines as they traveled thru the Reno area in July of 2011 for their annual training. We also attend the funerals of fallen servicemen and honor their families. We work with the casualty officer to ensure the family has support both during and after the service. The 1st Gold Star Banner I presented, my boy had just deployed for the 1st time. This is a labor of love. An Invitation for The Good Life Readers We invite you to get involved by writing letters of support and building up the morale of our troops as they continue to be deployed and be separated from their families in Reno. Your letters are treasured by our troops, some of whom carry them with them for the duration of their deployments. We gratefully appreciate your contribution of a supportive note. What is Qigong? By Bruce Knowlton
Q
igong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced “chee” and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. The second word, Gong, pronounced gung, means accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy, it is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality. Qigong is an integration of physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused intentions. Qigong practices can be classified as martial, medical, or spiritual. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture, (whether moving or stationary), breathing techniques, and mental focus. Some practices increase the Qi; others circulate it, use it to cleanse and heal the body, store it, or emit Qi to help heal others. Practices vary from the soft internal styles such as Tai Chi; to the external, vigorous styles such as Kung Fu. However, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. Like any other system of health care, Qigong is not a panacea, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. Qigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most exercises do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mind intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added, the benefits of exercise increase exponentially. The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system.
It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Those who maintain a consistent practice of Qigong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality, maintain health even into old age and helps speed recovery from illness. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/ mind/soul connection. People do Qigong to maintain health, heal their bodies, calm their minds, and reconnect with their spirit. When these three aspects of our being are integrated, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style, which brings greater harmony, stability, and enjoyment There are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. I provide Qigong classes for children, senior citizens, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club. Qigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit, regardless of ability, age, belief system or life circumstances. Anyone can enrich their lives by adding Qigong to their daily routine. Children learning to channel their energy and develop increased concentration; office workers learning Qigong to reduce stress; seniors participating in gentle movements to enhance balance and their quality of life; caregivers embracing a practice to develop their ability to help others; prisons instituting Qigong programs to restore balance in inmates lives; midwives using Qigong techniques to ease child birth. I provide group or private lessons. For further information on classes please contact: Bruce Knowlton – Certified Qigong and Tai Chi Instructor 775-682-0811
