The Smiths of Old Southwest Reno: A Lifetime of Living and Giving in the Biggest Little City

pon meeting Ron and Pat Smith, I notice the unique sound of their voices. They are both steeped in theater and the arts, and their love of the stage is evident in the warm cadence of their speech. Their voices convey vitality infused with enthusiasm and an unbridled zest for life. As they chat with me about their family and their lives in the Biggest Little City, it is clear that they are an inspired and inspiring duo. In their voices are echoes of their love of singing—together they have over 83 years of combined experience singing in the choir of Reno First United Methodist Church—their homeaway-from-home. The dynamic couple 6

has called Old Southwest Reno home since their marriage in 1981. They continue to share their gifts by championing the arts in the city closest to their hearts. Many Reno residents might recognize Ron’s voice as the longtime announcing voice for Reno’s most renowned annual event, the Balloon Races—just one of his many gifts to the Reno community. The Smiths, married over 33 years, have deep roots in the Reno arts, theater and broadcasting arenas—in both their professional lives and as volunteers. Ron Smith, 78, has had a long and rich professional life in Reno including prominent positions in public relations, radio

sales, advertising, marketing and management. He was also a news anchor at what is now KNRV and a production manager at KOLOTV. Pat Smith, 71, retired as the executive director of the Sierra Arts Foundation, a role she held from 1992-1999. She worked with the City of Reno in 1999 to secure funding that resulted in the conversion of the Riverside Hotel into artist lofts. Ron held PR posts at the Lawlor events Center and John Ascuaga’s Nugget, while Pat also served as the executive director of the Nevada Nurses’ Association. Their careers have given them a great intimacy with the city of Reno and the State of Nevada: Ron was director of the Convention April 2014

& Visitors Bureau at the Reno Chamber of Commerce for a decade, and Pat’s work with the Nurses’ Association involved lobbying during four legislative sessions. The Smiths have forged their unique careers thanks in part to their perspectives on how Reno has changed over the years. Drawing from his background at the Reno Chamber of Commerce, Ron can speak to Reno’s more obvious attractions. “I was basically a salesperson for our town,” he explains. “But even today, I’d still tell people the same things that I told them back then in the early ‘70s. I would still talk about the incredible four seasons, the year-round access to outdoor sporting and the phenomenal natural environment…and of course the ease of access to Northern California.” Pat adds that Reno’s arts community has grown dramatically over the past decades. “It’s impossible to underestimate the impact of the cottage art businesses that operate out of the Riverside Lofts and enhance the financial and cultural health of Reno. I would say that the midtown visual

and performing arts scene has taken off dramatically in recent years and is shaping the growth of the city.” The two were both originally from California—Ron born in Salinas and raised in San Francisco, and Pat born in Palo Alto. Ron came to Reno in 1960 and Pat in 1966. They laugh that they met in the most

mundane of ways—at a bar! Ron shares that Pat picked him up in a bar, while Pat’s story is the reverse—it was Ron who did the picking. Either way, their meeting has resulted in a long and productive union. They married in 1981, creating a blended family comprised of Ron’s son, Greg, and Pat’s sons, Erik and Kevin. At that time,

Ron’s daughter Deb was already out on her own. All of the kids graduated from Reno High and all three boys went on to four year colleges—Greg would graduate from UNR, Erik from the University of Miami, and Kevin from Oregon State. “When the men of the family all finally left for college, they left us with tons of chores in a huge house, and in 1989 we moved to our current residence in River Bend,” says Pat. They enjoyed the downsizing and are active in their neighborhood community for social events and an informal neighborhood watch within the cul du sac. A Blended and Growing Family The Smiths’ blended family grew when Ron’s daughter Deb married and had their grandson Javier, now 31, and Greg married and had Sinjen Smith, now 21, and Zach Smith, now 19. Erik and his wife Sue married and had Jack and Sam, and reside in Elk Grove, CA. Kevin and his wife Kim married and had Kate and Gus and live a rural lifestyle in Piqua, Ohio. Their children and grandchildren carry on Ron and

Pat’s legacy of hard work and fruitful career choices. Deb runs a successful business as a certified massage therapist in Reno called Applied Touch Massage. When he went to McQueen High School, Javier was a member of the champion football team in 2000 and went on to partner with his father in El Adobe Mexican Restaurant, a neighborhood favorite on West Arroyo in Reno. Sinjen and Zach graduated from Galena High School and attended TMCC. Sinjen is involved in Mixed Martial Arts and Zach is part UNR’s club boxing team. Even with all their children and grandchildren out in the world, Pat and Ron still have a “child” at home—their loving ragdoll cat, Huck. The couple hosts annual Thanksgiving dinners that reunite all of their geographically-scattered family, and monthly dinners for their family who reside in Reno. They consider their church community at Reno First United Methodist to be their extended family, and many of their neighbors also attend the church.

Arts Involvement, The Ageless Repertory Theatre and Authorship Involvement Arts remains a central beacon in the lives of Ron and Pat Smith. “We’ve been involved in the arts as part of an audience and on the management side for our entire married life,” says Pat. Ron’s volunteer work has spanned the gamut from the arts to sports, including over 50 years working as a writer, performer and director of The Sheep Dip Show, and nine years as a walking scorer for the Reno-Tahoe Open Golf Tournament. Ron was also president of the Nevada State Fair in the 1980s and served on the board of directors for the Reno Rodeo Board and for Hot August Nights. He was also vice president for the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in the 1990s. Pat worked on 31 Sheep Dip Shows and served on the Founding Board for People, Inc., a nonprofit family counseling service. Together, the two have been intricately involved with the Ageless Repertory Theatre, a readers’ theatre style production

company. The ART has a troupe of about 20 actors, many with extensive experience in community theater direction and performance. “It’s so wonderful because we can use many different venues. We’ve held shows at schools, community centers and our shows at the Village Shopping Center,” says Pat. “We’ve done comedies by Neil Simon, all with scripts in hand—but our audience hardly notices that—it’s so engaging. We often have an older, retired audience, and have many seniors in the troupe itself.” The ART is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. “We’re so wonderfully supported by donations at our shows. What we do is essentially a community service, bringing professional and exciting entertainment to the community, by the community,” says Ron. They’re excited for their April show, “Aspirin and Elephants,” by Jerry Meyer an offbeat comedy about a family cruise. “When we retired,” says Pat, “we made a conscious decision to stay in Reno year round and stay involved with our community. We’re so connected here—we’ve been here since there were barely 50,000 people in town!” Ron adds that their support and participation in the arts is a gift to the city. “For example, being the voice of the Reno Balloon Races—I’ll do it as long as I can—it’s one way of sharing a gift with the community. It’s not a gift if it isn’t shared.” Another artistic gift that Pat shared with the world is her 2006 book, <italics> Who Are You and What Have You Done with My Mother?”—an insightful, tender and often genuinely humorous The Good Life | Old Southwest Reno

look into the life of her own mother’s experience with dementia. “Ron encouraged me to write about this difficult time I went through with my mother, and after a few years of thinking about it, the book had to be written. It’s a chronicle of my mother’s life, as well as reflections on living with dementia—two story lines that intertwine and merge. There are surprisingly many moments of levity throughout the book,” explains Pat. The book is available on Amazon.com. Both in their seventies now, Ron and Pat are still far from slowing down. In May, they’ll be taking a European river cruise from Amsterdam to Vienna—but Reno and their home community will never be far from their hearts. You can hear it in their voices. Put the following in a shaded box nearby to the feature article: Ageless Repertory Threatre (ART), a staged reading group in the Old Southwest, presents “Aspirin & Elephants,” a romantic comedy in two acts, written by Jerry Mayer. It will be performed on Tuesday and Friday, April 15 and 18, at 1pm at Circles Edge, 1117 California Avenue in the Village Shopping Center. The play takes place in staterooms of a cruise ship plying the North Sea through Scandinavia and Russia. It’s warm and funny with very distinct characters. Ron Smith directs the play and, with his wife Pat, performs as well. There is no charge. Donations are welcome.

he new spring exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum uncovers the world of hidden wealth and proves that all that glitters is not gold! Treasure: Riches, Rogues, and Relics celebrates the history of found treasure through the stories of notorious pirates, famous rulers and lucky archaeologists. But along with gold and silver, the exhibit explores other kinds of treasures and challenges visitors to look at the world a little differently. Treasure includes elements to enthrall visitors of all ages. The Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garden court introduces guests to the Golden Age of Piracy. Giant animatronic squid, shark, and sea monsters move and hiss, revealing the myths and mysteries of the ocean. Realistic mannequins fill out the room and explain the difference between pirates and privateers. Visitors can stand next to Queen Elizabeth as she knights Sir Francis Drake, and spy on Anne Bonny and Calico Jack as they divvy up their horde in the cove nearby. But watch out! Blackbeard is lurking in the trees. Peering inside an Aztec temple reveals a holographic transformation of a man into Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity of ancient Mesoamerica. Here visitors transition to exploring the treasures of ancient civilization. More than 100 beautiful artifacts from the dawn of civilization are on display, including pottery, cuneiform tablets, bronze and metal sculpture, currency, and weapons. The breathtaking timeline of objects, on loan from the Origins Museum Institute, traces the appearance and progression of ancient cultures. There is also a rare cast of the

famous Lucy skeleton. Another room is dedicated solely to treasures of Nevada, including dozens of authentic gem and mineral specimens. Visitors can get up close to stunning pieces of obsidian, turquoise, amethyst, sulfur, and even a real chunk of gold ore. Native American treasures on display include duck decoys made out of reeds, a stone mano and metate, and illustrations by renowned artist Robert Cole Caples. Other local treasures include a beautifully preserved bighorn sheep and bobcat. To cap the experience, visitors also get admittance to the permanent museum collection, which features a lifetime of treasures collected by the Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s namesake Wilbur D. May. The collection spans thousands of years and hundreds of cultures, with rare and exotic artifacts on display including Japanese swords, Polynesian statues, African tribal masks, Egyptian tomb items, European guns and everything in between. The May Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm, Sunday, noon to 4pm. Come join us! What happens in a single day in the library? How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding a job, doing homework or taxes? Snapshot Day helps us collect statistics photos and stories to prove the value of libraries. Come in any library on Tuesday April 1 for Snapshot Day. Wally’s World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada will be featured in the Northwest Reno library gallery from March 10-May 2, 2014. This exhibit is a part of the Nevada Touring Initiative Traveling Exhibition Program. The exhibit features 35 pieces of art from Wally Cuchine’s collection, which is located in Eureka, Nevada, on Hwy 50’s “Loneliest Road.” For more than two decades, residents in this part of rural Nevada have experienced a breadth of quality cultural events,

thanks to Wally Cuchine’s personal passion for the arts. As director of the Eureka Opera House for over 18 years, Cuchine consistently presented first-class entertainment to residents and visitors.
