Feature Story

A Partnership, a Pet Shop and a Reno Family Story: Rob and Lori Burks of Natural Paws By Carlie Partridge

A

t the base of Mt. Rose Highway, Reno residents will find a local gem of a pet supply shop. Natural Paws is a business devoted to helping your pets thrive by providing the highest quality in all natural nutrition. It’s a neighborhood pet supply center with a mission: to help people provide the healthiest possible lives for their furry friends. Natural Paws also offers all natural treats, supplies and accessories. “You’ll find everything from pet toys to beds and natural shampoo products. You probably won’t find that luxury crystal collar, we’re oriented towards more natural products,” says owner Rob Burks. Natural Paws is the third pet shop owned by Lori along with her husband Rob, and the couple is passionate about pet health and pet rescue.

“We have rescued all our pets and they have been wonderful additions to our family. We

encourage everyone to try pet rescue first, as you will save a life and find your new best friend.” –Rob and Lori of Natural Paws

A Shared Passion for Pets Lori and Rob started their first pet store in Sausalito, CA in 1999. They had met through friends at a Tahoe New Year’s eve party in 1997 and realized their common love for pets and community-oriented small business. “We originally thought we’d start a pet catalog together,” says Rob, “but there was a perfect storefront waiting for us on the waterfront.” So began their commitment to helping their pet-owning neighbors understand the importance of high-quality food. “People often don’t realize how much of a difference pet food makes,” says Lori, who explains that the quality of food directly affects a pet’s energy level. “Depending on food quality, you’ll notice differences in your pet’s skin and fur, and more importantly their quality of life and even longevity. Nutrition is key.” 4

Natural Paws in Reno is designed to help customers pick a food that works for their pets and for their budget. “A common misperception towards a small pet supply business like ours is that we must be more expensive than the big-box stores,” explains Lori. “In fact, we’re competitively priced with stores like Petco, and we choose our inventory knowing that our customers are on a budget. Especially for those who own big dogs, food can become quite expensive. We know this and we offer a variety of products to address every need.” Natural Paws Outreach: Pet Adoption and Rescue Since they started in the pet supply business, Rob and Lori have been devoted to focusing on rescue and adoption as part of their business outreach and community service. They donate a portion of their sales to pet rescue agencies as well as supporting several local organizations through hosting events. Rob is a seasoned open water swimmer, and two summers ago he put his talents towards his passion for pet rescue. Rob and his friend Mike Ryder swam the entire 21-mile length of Lake Tahoe as a relay to benefit For Pets Sake, raising over $1,000. “Spring and summer are a big time for pet adoptions in this area,” says Lori, who has two rescue dogs of her own. Deni, a golden border collie, AKA Dennis the Menace is known as the “CEO” of Natural Paws—“CEO” being “Chief Eating Officer.” Guinness, a German shepherd mix is also known as the CFO, or “Chief Fun Officer” of Natural Paws. The 12 year old dogs are both rescues. Natural Paws features a different rescue group every Saturday at their store at the pet adoptions. For four years, Natural Paws has grown in the South Reno

community—grown in connections and relationships with neighbors. “The community support here in Reno is just phenomenal,” says Lori. The couple loves getting to know their customers and sharing their passion for pets. Growing Family Roots in Reno Lori and Rob are fond of Reno and Tahoe, where they originally met. They felt Reno was a wonderful place to establish their business and their family roots. The couple also supports adopting through foster care, a cause near and dear to their hearts. Lori worked as a Washoe County CASA for 3 years, starting in 2009. A CASA is a court appointed special advocate for foster children—an advocate who helps the foster child by becoming a friend and advocate as they go through the court process. When a child is first taken out of their home situation due to abuse or neglect, they enter a system that can often pose challenges for a young person. “Our objective as a CASA is to work for the child’s best interest and provide reports to the court recording our observations and what we feel is the best situation for the child,” explains Lori. With the business thriving and enjoying Reno life, they were ready to grow their family. The couple had always wanted to adopt a child, but Lori explains that “life just got in the way, and all of the sudden we were in our forties. We were thinking it’s ‘now or never,’ so we went through the foster and adoption process in Washoe County.” Lori shares that her experience as a CASA further inspired she and Rob to adopt and provide a loving home for a foster child. “Rather than going to private

adoption or overseas agencies, we felt like these children in our own community needed our help and home,” says Lori. Lori and Rob anticipated adopting a 3-5 year old child into their family, but a surprise was in store for the Natural Paws owners. “We got a call on a Tuesday that a girl, Sophie, had been born the previous day, and asked if we wanted to be one of the five families considered to adopt her. Sophie was born to a young mother who’d had no prenatal care, and as a newborn faced some health concerns. We knew it was a ‘yes.’ The very next day, we got a call that we were chosen and would be picking her up on Friday! We didn’t even have an outfit or a crib at first. Nine months later, she was officially ours, and she just turned two in March. Today, Sophie is healthy and happy in her new home. We are so happy we adopted from social services as she has brought so much joy and fun into our lives, and she certainly keeps us young! We encourage everyone who has room in their home to consider becoming a foster or adoptive parent to these wonderful local children in need of caring homes.” Special Event: Hike for Hounds, June 7th, 2014 @Galena Regional Park, 9am-1pm Your Chance to Adopt a Pet or Just Play! Natural Paws is sponsoring a pet benefit, Hike for Hounds, on June 7th at Galena Regional Park. Green trees rising from floor to ceiling offer a reception into an atrium-like setting of leafy plants and running water from the fountain on the garden level. Because of its unique architecture and landscaping, Technology Services Librarian Marc Tiar felt inspired to enter the Downtown Reno Library into a national contest sponsored by Gale/ Cengage for the “Most Beautiful Library.” One of the categories was for “Coolest Internal Space” which seemed providential for the garden-like atmosphere. After one week of voting, the Downtown Reno came away as the winner in its category. With that award came a prize of $500. Tiar, who took his inspiration and initiative to enter the library into the contest, was rewarded by determining how the winnings will be spent. Pet Health

Summer Safety for your Pets:

5 Tips for Happy Hounds

S

ummer is a great time to “paws” and enjoy friends and family, but it can also bring dangers to your pets. The summer season in the Sierra foothills can be taxing on pets as the mercury rises into the triple digits with very low humidity. Your furry friends obviously need more hydration during this time, but there are several other things to be aware of to keep them safe in the heat. 1. Beware of Heatstroke If your dog or cat is acting extremely lethargic, it might be due to more than a little summer laziness. One of the first signs of heat stroke is lethargy. Other signs include excessive drooling, fever and in extreme cases, vomiting and collapse. Breeds with shorter noses such as pugs, boxers and bulldogs are especially vulnerable to heat stroke. Prevent heatstroke by keeping your pet inside, providing a shady area when outside and maintaining hydration. 2. Offer Cool-off Options Be sure to give your pet several ways to regulate their temperature. Leave a fan on and in a place where your pet can

10

easily sit in front of it. Consider adding extra ice-cubes to your pet’s water bowl. Offer your pet frozen treats: you can blend pet food with some peanut butter and freeze it, creating fun “doggie ice cream.” 3. Avoid Hot Sidewalks The easiest way to avoid complications from hot sidewalks is to take your pet on walks in the early morning or evening, avoiding the hot time of the day. Remember that your dog’s paws can become burned on pavement, blacktop and even on sand. 4. Summer Grooming Your pet will stay cool easier with an untangled, brushed and groomed coat. Don’t allow your pet’s fur to grow longer than one inch in the summer months. 5. A Hidden Danger in Coolant Pets are attracted to the scent of coolant that might leak from your vehicles in the summertime. Even a tiny amount of ingested coolant can make your pet very sick. If you suspect your pet has ingested coolant, take it to the vet immediately.

Jelena Hardy on a Life’s Journey and a Blossoming Yoga Community in Reno

W

hen people tell me that they can’t practice yoga because they can’t touch their toes, I usually tell them that the goal of yoga is not the attainment of an ideal body, whatever that means. What I’m sometimes tempted to tell them is this: When I found myself in a war in my native Bosnia as a teenager, I never thought I’d survive the horror, but I did. I never thought I’d be living in the United States one day, but I do. I never thought I’d be drawn to yoga in my late twenties, during a time of great turmoil, but that’s exactly what happened. I certainly never thought my life would completely transform through the practice of yoga and that I’d be opening my own studio in Reno, the only place that ever felt like home. Sometimes, I do reply to the “yoga-is-not-for-me” statement with my own personal story, but I sum it up simply like this: Your own thoughts about what’s possible and what’s impossible for you are your only obstacle to realizing your own beauty and living in complete peace. The practice of yoga, which started as a purely physical experiment, became a doorway for me to open up fearlessly to all of life. On my yoga mat, I learned how to love myself by quieting my mind enough to realize that I had not been kind to myself my whole life. The most life-changing realization for me was that all my suffering was a result of searching for happiness and

love in all the wrong places: outside of myself. Completely transformed by this realization, I felt the pull to become a yoga teacher and share with others this simple and beautiful practice of selfdiscovery that had pulled me out of my self-imposed darkness. A New Home for Yoga in Reno Six months after completing my training to teach yoga I moved to Reno from Northern California to be with the man that would become my husband. After a year of teaching classes at a local studio and a gym, it was time to move on. Even in a makeshift studio space I rented from the River School Farm in north Reno and another at Billinghurst Middle School, my yoga community grew steadily over the next four years. The decision to open up my own studio arose spontaneously, but felt 100 percent right. My love for the practice of yoga is secondary to my love for helping people discover that the diamond they’re looking for is already in their possession. This simple message is at the root of my teaching. The practice of yoga nowadays is often reduced to a form of exercise, in which only the young, fit and flexible can excel, leaving others feeling inadequate. The true purpose of yoga is much simpler and more beautiful than any pose: It is the realization that all wisdom is within. On the mat we learn to focus, to trust the breath, to still the mind and to invite the true self to guide us. The rewards of our yoga practice become evident as we take the lessons we learn on the mat and apply them off the mat, where our real practice is. Touching your toes is not required, and is probably not healthy for your spine anyway!

Rishi Yoga is at 1350 Stardust Street, Suite B. Our studio will open sometime in June. Please visit www.rishiyogareno.com, or email Jelena at jelenahardy@gmail.com for more information.

Business spotlight

All in the Family: The Grill restaurant in the Heart of Reno By Barbara Twitchell

W

alking up to the entrance of The Grill restaurant at Quail Corners on a Sunday evening, you might be surprised by what you find. A locked door. It’s no accident. The popular restaurant, located in the heart of Reno on South McCarran, is never open on Sundays or on any holiday, for that matter. The reason why is simple. It’s all about family. “Sundays and holidays are family days,” says Sam Francovich, owner of The Grill. “I want to be with my family and I want all of my employees to be able to be with theirs. If it were up to me, no restaurants would be open on those days.” That’s really quite a remarkable ideal to espouse in today’s competitive business market where the bottom line usually trumps family values. Without question, this is truly a family business in every sense of the word. Sam, his wife, Diane, and their daughter, Marisa, share ownership of The Grill, as well as all the business duties. They run the restaurant in a very personal, hands-on fashion, which usually includes one of them greeting the patrons upon arrival. The guests are warmly welcomed into the casually elegant setting. “A first time customer is like a new friend,” Sam says with a warm smile. “Repeat customers become like family.” After operating The Grill for almost 15 years, he is proud to add that many longtime locals are among his most faithful clients. The Francovich family’s Reno roots run deeper than most in this community, dating back to 1859 when Sam’s great, great grandfather, Eli Francovich, moved here and opened the Wine House. Subsequently run by Sam’s grandfather, that combination bar/casino/restaurant operated for nearly 100 years before closing in 1957. So in many ways The Grill is a way of carrying on an old

12

family tradition. But that’s not the only tradition this family likes to share. In 1867 Eli started making eggnog based on a family recipe he brought from his native Yugoslavia. Laced with just a touch of aged Kentucky bourbon and Jamaican rum, this distinctively light eggnog was given to friends as holiday gifts. It’s a family custom that has continued for five generations, most of that time making the beverage in a family member’s kitchen. In 1999, the extended family decided to take it to a new level – out of the kitchen and into their own distillery. Despite the change in location, it’s still very much a family business, Sam

says. For two months from October to December each year, the Francovich relatives get together one day a week to create the holiday beverage, always using their old 1940s bottling machine in the process. The line usually includes at least three generations of the family. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s still a total blast,” Sam says. “And it’s important to us to carry on the tradition.” They took another risk a few years ago and brought one more Francovich custom to market: manhattans. “Drinking manhattans in the evening was a family tradition that went back for generations,” Sam says. “The formula evolved from years of the family making and tasting manhattans. We got really good at it.” Working together to develop the formula larger scale production, the family became the product leader in manufacturing the first premixed manhattans marketed commercially. Even so, it’s still totally their own operation, hand mixed and bottled by the family in their local distillery. Available in an award winning 1-liter size skyscraper gift bottle or in a convenient, economical easy-pour 750 milliliter bottle, both can be purchased at local liquor stores. In a world of large conglomerates, mass marketing, impersonalized business models and products that are more likely to come from across the globe than across town, it’s refreshing to see one family bucking the trend. And best of all, they are not only keeping their family traditions alive, they are trying to include us in that warm, wonderful circle as well.

The Peppermill’s Passport Rewards Club even offers a locals a 20% discount on nearly all its services and amenities. As the top ranked hotel in North America by Expedia users and Trip Advisor’s No. 1 hotel resort, you’re sure to find a room that offers all the comforts of home – in your very own backyard! After settling in, head downstairs for some top-notch dining in one of the resort’s 10 eateries. Ranging from a delicious New York-style deli to savory steaks at Bimini and handcrafted pastas at Romanza Ristorante Italiano, you’ll dine in style. For an underthe-sea experience, dive into Oceano’s fresh selection of seafood or go for Chinese at CHI, serving both traditional and contemporary Asian delicacies. For the kids – or just the kid in you – the third floor arcade entertains with games including classics like ski ball and air hockey and contemporaries such as Speed of Light. For those who love to play with higher stakes, the Peppermill’s 82,000-square-foot gaming floor offers slots, table games, tournaments and Reno’s only high-definition Race & Sports Book theater with 100-plus screens for the best sports viewing. The Peppermill also offers a non-smoking slot section and provides the cleanest air possible in its otherwise smoking-friendly environment, filtered by the latest in air circulation technology to avoid drift to other areas of the resort.

everything from intimate to hip and happening — including EDGE, a dress-to-impress club that’s touted as Reno’s hottest nightspot. Also known as one of the area’s best, the Terrace Lounge is the perfect place to relax while enjoying award-winning wines, a seasonal open-air lounge, and sweeping views of the pool and Tuscan Gardens. Live acts from around the region also perform nearly every night of the week including Keyser Soze, Jelly Bread and Drinking with Clowns. A Renowned Spa Aside from its dining and entertainment options, visitors from near and far frequent the Peppermill for its Spa Toscana, boasting 24 treatment rooms offering Vichy and dry hydrotherapy, massage, reflexology, Reiki, body wraps, bronzing and skincare. Its three stories feature mosaic-covered floors, stunning fountains and water features, and serene relaxation areas, creating a picturesque reflection of an enchanting Italian retreat. Spa Toscana is also home to the state’s only Caldarium, featuring an indoor pool, sun deck and Secret Garden with spa food service. Spa Toscana’s full service spa has both men’s and women’s Ritual rooms with hot and cold plunge pools, cascading deluge showers, eucalyptus steam and cedar wood saunas. Top off your staycation by soaking up some sun. The Peppermill has one of the finest complexes in northern Nevada with both upper and lower level outdoor pools. All pools are heated with the resort’s own geothermal well, allowing them to remain open year-round. The pools, spas and private cabanas create a festive, beach-like atmosphere. Rooms in the Peppermill Tower range from just $80 midweek to $130 on the weekend, catering to most budgets and offering a deeply relaxing, world class local luxury.
