Feature Story
The Remingtons of Reno on Happiness, Health and Hope By Carlie Partridge Photo By: Photo Wickum
K
risten and Leonard Remington both have their childhood roots in the Reno area, both went to high school locally and both eventually left to follow their education and career paths. They also both returned to the area. The couple jokes that there must be some kind of magical magnetism in their hometown. “We all come back, don’t we,” says Kristen, whose smile is a familiar feature in most Reno households; she’s the evening news anchor on Channel 2. “There’s just something about Northern Nevada. We wouldn’t want to raise our children anywhere else,” Kristen adds. The couple has two girls, Brooklyn, 4 and Rylie, 2. Most weekends, they can all be found in Reno’s parks, the girls fond of yelling “Best day Eveeeeeeeer!” and exploring the city’s treasured family attractions. “We’re big fans of the Discovery Museum and sometimes go to the movies but we’re also busy with karate classes. Our goal is for the girls to have their black belts by the time they start dating!” Kristen shares. The Remington girls run the household, with Brooklyn’s sweet attitude filling the house 4
with energy and Rylie’s more strongminded, independent personality often taking the reins. The family’s busy lives have been in the public eye due to Kristen’s TV presence. An adored local anchor, Kristen is in the living rooms of Reno residents every weekday evening. “I’m proud of her,” says Leonard, whose role as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley is far less public. “I’m known as Kristen Remington’s husband, and that’s fine with me,” smiles Leonard. “People have a sense that she’s a part of their family, a part of their daily lives. That’s something special to Reno. It’s the kind of place where the news anchors are more human, more accessible,” he says. Kristen adds that there’s a sense of inclusion in Reno’s tight-knit community. “Being on TV has its moments,” says Kristen. “Always being camera-ready no matter what is going on in life can be a challenge, but I embrace it. Though we might lose a little privacy by being in the public eye, we gain just that much more community and support.”
A Personal Story, a Community Concern Indeed, the Remingtons experienced the warmth and support of the Reno community in early 2012, when Kristen was nine months pregnant with Rylie and Leonard was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an extremely aggressive form of blood cancer. “I was extremely surprised and shocked,” says Leonard, who thought he was experiencing a flu. “It was surreal,” he says of the diagnosis. “It’s something that can take the life right out of you, but we had so much to live for.” Leonard explains that he was always the athlete, the gym rat and the all-around healthy guy. “Once the shock wore off it was time to focus on my recovery and on the new baby,” said Leonard, reflecting on one of the most daunting times in life. Leonard’s diagnosis came just three weeks before Kristen would give birth. “Life is not always easy; we’re not guaranteed anything,” shares Kristen. “We believe that with faith, friends, family and a supportive community, you can truly get through just about anything.” Leonard was May 2014
given just one day to get his business in order before starting a 40 day “induction” period in the hospital under the care of Reno Oncology Consultants and Doctor Suresh Reddy. He would receive high-dose chemotherapy. At that point, Leonard was on the third floor of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, fighting for his life, while Kristen was one floor below on the second floor about to bring new life into the world. During that time, the Remingtons shared their story through social media and the community followed their journey closely. “I particularly remember a story I shared about a pinecone,” says Kristen. “It was a simple story about a pinecone surviving through the harsh elements of winter, carrying and protecting the seeds of new life within. The story really resonated with me at the time, and it was shared widely through our social media connections.” Their own little pinecone, Rylie, was safely delivered at St. Mary’s. When babies are born at that hospital, they play lullaby music over the loud speakers in the hospital. “I remember hoping that Leonard heard the music and knew that our little girl was in the world.” Leonard got to meet Rylie a couple days after her
birth. “Her name means “courage,” and her middle name is Faith—two names that represented what our family needed during that tough time,” says Kristen. Transitions and Transfusions During Leonard’s battle against cancer, Kristen says she found out the hard way how absolutely essential the process of blood donation can be. “Everyone talks about oil and water being precious commodities, but we think it’s blood,” says Leonard, who explains that during the process of chemotherapy, the immune system is destroyed and blood is the key to
survival and health. Kristen also learned that her own, more rare blood type allows her to donate blood to babies. She met an anemic boy to whom she was able to donate blood, and learned about the true value of blood drives. “For people who need blood transfusion, there is no substitute. Blood donation is the only way to support the transfusions, and it’s always in need,” she says. Now fully in remission and cancer free, Leonard reflects on his experience. “The biggest thing I feel I can do is give hope to others who face a battle with cancer. I know how in a split second, a diagnosis can send

ripples through your entire life and change things instantly. I find it therapeutic to reach out to others, as others reached out to me when I was sick. The support of others is invaluable in creating the mindset to get down to business and get well,” says Leonard. Priorities and Perspectives As Leonard’s health returned, the Remingtons found that their priorities had dramatically changed. “The way something like cancer can change your perspective on life is awe-inspiring,” says Leonard. “There’s nothing petty to gripe about anymore. There’s a powerful sense of what’s truly important in life.” For Kristen and Leonard, their lives involve a significant amount of community visibility and involvement. Leonard participates on the board of the Nevada Museum of Art. “It’s a cultural gem in our community,” he says. Kristen is often the Emcee at non-profit events around town including the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, among others. Looking to the future, the Remingtons are proud to call Reno their permanent home. “We definitely have gravity here,” says Kristen. “The amazing community is essential to our family’s life here.” The family loves the outdoor lifestyle Reno offers as well as the quality of public education and medical care in the area. “We’re thinking we’ll be pretty busy with our girls,” says Kristen. “Rylie recently took mayonnaise from the fridge and began fingerpainting on the door. She’s our little Einstein.” For their family, every day truly is the “best day eveeeerrrr!” Their experiences over the past years have inspired their attitude to embrace each day. “It’s about making memories and loving each other through it all,” says Kristen. Keep an eye out for “Someone to Know” in Reno! Readers of The Good Life can catch Kristen’s weekly spot, “Someone to Know,” which adds a positive spin to local news. “One of the biggest criticisms of the local news media is that they tend to focus on negative things. For the past 7 years, this segment highlights inspiring local people, the kind of water cooler stories that people are going to talk about. Even for just a few minutes once a week, if we can renew faith in the human spirit, we’re doing a public service,” she says. 6

Celebrating & (in a way) Independence
I
f we are all being honest, the following is a familiar scenario: You are at a Cinco de Mayo party, eating guacamole and tacos, drinking a “cerveza” (if you are an adult) when some naive soul cheers to something about “Mexican Independence Day”; while you cannot quite remember what Cinco de Mayo memorializes, you are sure it’s not Mexican Independence. You’d be right, since Mexican Independence Day is on September 16th. So in the name of what event are you gorging yourself on mexican food and cerveza? That would be the Battle of Puebla. In 1861, Mexico was on the brink of ruin due to failing finances. To keep the country afloat, Mexican President Benito Juarez opted to stop paying the European creditors. Mexico’s creditors immediately hastened to Mexico to salvage their loans, but while Spain and England worked out an agreement, France decided this meant Mexican territory was now the collateral they were collecting on. France sent 6,000 troops to stamp
out Mexico’s insolence in Puebla de Los Angeles, but what happened was unexpected. President Juarez was able to scrounge together 2,000 men led by General Ignacio Zaragoza to defend the small town with only meager weapons and hope. From sunrise to sunset on May 5th, the Mexican loyalists were able to hold off and defeat the French soldiers. Even more surprisingly, when the French retreated it was discovered the French suffered losses of 500 men, while the Mexicans only lost 100 men. The Franco-Mexican War continued on for 6 long years, during which France installed Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as the Emperor of Mexico. When the war did end in 1876, it was with the help of the United States, who had been distracted with it’s own Civil War for much of the Franco-Mexican War. The United States pressured France to withdraw from Mexico citing the previously disregarded Monroe Doctrine; this old doctrine stated that European attempts to settle in the Americas would incite aggres-
sion (a.k.a. war) from the United States. France washed its hands of Mexico shortly, and left “Emperor” Ferdinand Maximilian to finally meet his fate with the trodden upon Mexican people. The Battle of Puebla was a rather insignificant event in the big picture of the Franco-Mexican War, but it served as a rallying point for the Mexicans, who never stopped resisting the French infiltration. After the Battle of Puebla, Mexicans (especially Californian Mexicans) celebrated the date to support Mexican resistance from invaders; to this day, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States than it is in Mexico. Mexican cities traditionally hold military parades and reenactments of the Battle of Puebla (especially in Puebla) on May 5th, but the day is not a federal holiday. In the United States, however, Cinco de Mayo is cause for celebrating all things Mexican heritage and pride, which is just how Chicano activists planned it when they revived Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the 1960’s.

Battle Born Boomtown:
A Historic Entertainment Hub
A
s the Battle Born State celebrates 150 years, a local landmark revels in its own long history in Northern Nevada. Boomtown Casino and Hotel boasted 94 slots when it opened in its current location 50 years ago. From the humble beginnings of a westbound couple dreaming of success to a multi-million dollar organization, Boomtown was properly named. Recently boasting a $20 million renovation project, Boomtown held a month-long celebration. “It’s really something to celebrate,” said long-time Boomtown owner and Reno Mayor Bob Cashell. “The progress from what it once was is just astounding. In business, just as in life, it’s important to take a minute to recognize progress every once in a while.” Boomtown’s Roots When Bill and Effie Holmes moved to the Reno area from Twin Falls, Idaho in 1945, Verdi was barely a spot on a map and Interstate 80 was yet to be paved. Still, they set up shop at a restaurant called Wishing Well Café. With some success, they expanded down the road to open “Bill and Effie’s Truck Stop.” When Nevada opened gaming license applications to small business in 1960, construction was just beginning on Interstate 80, which was previously known as the Lincoln Highway. In 1964, the Holmes made way for more slot machines and a bigger diner, landing in a prime roadside location we have come to know as Boomtown Casino and Hotel. Today, the 600-slot, four-restaurant, entertainment hub, 318-room hotel room and all-you-can-eat-lobster landmark is a far cry from the 17-slot machine truck stop diner from which it originated.

“Boomtown represents Reno’s history. The highway, the gambling rights, the railroad’s path, and the impact it had on towns properly positioned nearby. Boomtown is a model of Northern Nevada’s growth and development through time and its remodel is representative of the serious investments pouring into our region today.” –Bob Cashell, Boomtown owner and current Reno Mayor Cashell, who bought the casino in 1967, created the name and concept of Boomtown. Adding the first bar in 1971, he became the driving force behind the growth, building game tables in the years to follow and a hotel in 1978. In the years following, the property was sold again, made public and Boomtown aimed to cater to families, adding its Family Fun Center and a theater. “There’s no denying this property has incredible potential,” said M1 Reno Chief Operating Officer Dean DiLullo. “We can partner with the ski resorts, cater to eastbound traffic from major California markets, and continue to serve regional guests who have stayed loyal after all these years. It’s what we were delivering to those guests that needed the biggest overhaul.” New carpets, tile, lighting and signs were just the beginning of the reimagined layout and face of Boomtown. By 2015, M1 plans to have each of the 318 hotel rooms completely remodeled. Meanwhile, four new restaurants, a new bar with nightly entertainment, new machines and renewed amenities for VIPs grace the casino floor. Bistro 2100, one of the featured new restaurants which replaced Cassidy’s Steakhouse, boasts a casual but polished dining experience with signature dishes and traditional favorites. Alongside the Famous All You Can Eat Lobster Buffet, which has seen several upgrades as well, diners can now also choose from the 24-hour Market Fresh Deli, Baja Mexican and Sports Dog. Reno Mayor Bob Cashell was honored at the VIP Dinner April 24 for his work to put Boomtown on the map. Proceeds benefitted Quest Counseling and donations received at Kids’ Day went to Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Reno Home Organizer Robin Sabo Inspiration for Spring Cleaning from the Outside In
F
or professional home organizer Robin Sabo, getting de-cluttered for spring and summer has effects beyond what you might expect. “Creating balance in your life,” she says, “encompasses the inner and the outer realms of your being. When you organize your home, it helps to create a more peaceful, calm and balanced life from the outside in.” Sabo truly enjoys meeting Reno residents in need of a little organizational TLC. Her word-of-mouth references have brought her into contact with so many wonderful people ready to add an extra dose of de-cluttering to their days. “I care about people and love helping others get organized. I have learned that it is easy to become overwhelmed when you have too many things going on in your life and don’t quite know how to prioritize them. You can reach a point where adding one more “piece to the pile” doesn’t make any difference because you already feel buried by the stuff around you,” explains Sabo. Sabo is ready to tackle small, detailed tasks, or help you with the big picture in your entire household. “ “Whether you have a pile of papers to be sorted and filed or a closet, pantry or kids room that is overflowing with stuff that you’re not even sure belongs in there, I will work with you to clean up the clutter. Without judgment, I will help you sort through what you have and help you make decisions on what to eliminate, what to keep and how to better organize the stuff you have. I will work with you to find systems that you are comfortable with that will help you find balance in your physical space (home surroundings) and stay organized.” Whether you use a professional organizer’s services or not, there are some simple rules you can follow to start the process of seasonal de-cluttering. Here are three basic “first steps” influenced by the Chinese art of Feng Shui: 1. Start with a corner. Corners are often where our clutter piles up whether in the form of books, boxes or piles of toys. By attending to the corners in your house first, you

will begin to feel a sense of breathing more freely. 2. Don’t pile items or boxes on high shelves in closets or pantries, as this can create a sense of “claustrophobia.” 3. When taking inventory of a closet seasonally, get rid of anything that you haven’t used for over two years, or anything that is not “beautiful or practical.” It’s easier said than done, but it’s worth a try! The Good Life wishes our residents a clutter-free season ahead! For more information about staying organized, visit Robin’s web site at www.renohomeorganizer.com

his month the Nevada Museum of Art promises a journey through both place and time. Italian Baroque: Paintings from the Haukohl Family Collection offers visitors the chance to stroll through the streets of 17th-century Florence and soak in breathtaking, dramatic works enveloped by equally impressive lavish frames. After Florence, Museum-goers can picture Mexico in the Hawkins gallery through the eyes of Alfredo Ramos Martínez. A contemporary of Frida Kahlo, Ramos Martínez brought Mexican culture to Los Angeles, where he defined a new Mexican-American art tradition. Picturing Mexico: Alfredo Ramos Martínez opens May 10. The journey through history does not stop with the artworks alone. To celebrate the show the Museum is showing two films from the Golden Age of NMA_003.14 RGJ_7.5x5v2.pdf 1 4/3/14 4:46 PM Mexican Cinema: Vamonos Con Pancho Villa, Sunday May 11;
and El Indio, Sunday May 18. Both start at 3 pm. Finally, May 31 the Museum invites you to transport your senses to Doris Duke’s Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art. This exhibition powerfully reflects Doris Duke’s life-long aesthetic passions, bringing together furnishings and objects from Shangri La, vintage photographs and films, architectural objects, textiles, and ephemera exploring the history and experience of this remarkable place Doris Duke built in Hawaii. The show will celebrate beauty, design, history, and culture, with objects dating from the second century to the present day.
