Teaching Philosophy
I believe Education is central to all cultures and find great meaning in being an essential part of the educational process. Provided there is not a fixed methodology to educate, I think you need to find your own way to gain the students’ trust and you can’t take for granted any curriculum or class, even if you have had previous experience with it.
Indeed you need a general map to begin with but, as I always try to do, I ask myself “How can I make this class more engaging? How can I communicate this concept in a different way? What are my tools? Who am I talking to”.
Before I start a class I assume a student has to be involved in order to actually learn, and that my main role is to pass a notion, an inspiration, an idea to the other side.
Education is not about the quantity of hours spent talking or about the final marks. Education is all about showing the students what they can do with the notions they’re learning. Education is about empowering people - if anything, my job is all about being able to make them understand this.
Regardless of what subject I’m teaching I always try to introduce something else in the picture - maybe is a story related to my personal experience or an anecdote about a designer I’ve read somewhere, a scene of a movie or a place I’ve been to which could make them think about something and understand one of the most important notion in Creativity: inspiration can come from anywhere. I also often ask my students to talk about what they like and why, so I can use these information to build a more tailored lecture and surprise them with something that relates directly to them.
Since I started my career as a teacher, it has given me purpose and motivation to continue in this path: every time I step into a class I know I have a great chance - I have the chance to inspire a group of people , regardless of their age, cultural background etc, to point them into a successful career and, hopefully, to a well designed world.
In time I also learned something else: to teach is to do design. As a designer, I see the teaching as an extension of my profession: as a matter of fact I’m “designing” the designers of tomorrow, and I do feel the huge responsibility that comes with it - to make sure that they are aware of the many challenges we’re facing collectively, to bring into the process topics such as resources, climate, technology, mental health, diversity, emotional intelligence…
Everyone, regardless of who they are or what they do must find a way to express themselves - go find your own tools and play with them
