In order to grasp an understanding of the growth and change cities experience, this project explored how the big box influences the development of a city. Lockhart (located in the Texas county of Cadwell), in this instance, started as a railroad city and moved out from the center. At the moment, Lockhart is destined for growth, being called the center between Austin and San Antonio, the busiest area along the i35 corridor. Considering these factors lead to the development of a system that works at various scales, from the regional scale to the city scale to the program scale. The system works in 3 parts (connecting, adapting, extending) and uses the idea of seams and strands to allow this to happen. Instead of growing along or around a highway, like most typical development happens, the system works in a linear fashion and aims to reduce the woes of sprawl.

reburbia It is without a doubt that sprawl has been a topic that has baffled architects and planners alike since the beginning of the suburbs. Unforunately, the suburbs is unanimous with success and happiness, in essence, the American Dream. But those who occupy and support this system too often don’t know the severe problems that arise from sprawl. In an effort to keep the qualities of suburbia alive and simultaneously reduce its harmful qualities (pollution, land waste, and isolation), Reburbia makes an attempt at recreating elements of the suburban home in the heart of downtown San Antonio.

As we explore time and the characteristics that it embodies, we begin to discover it is necessary to present the three different time periods parallel to each other. Each floor is dedicated to a particular frame of time, while the frame aims to create a void e xt e rior pe rspe ct ive where time is suspended. In an effort to seek and display the pure and simple beauty of time, this particular design aims to let the important points inattely present in the site drive the building. Soon after a varation of forms were found, the most delicate ones that controlled the lighting within the structure the bestwhere chosen and implemented. The secondary important attributes of the museum carve the rest of the shape within the building: the main staircase and the artifacts.

sunpaths The sun is very often a neglected powerful source. As a celebration of the sun and its everchanging, but consistent ways, a rotating frame system was created to follow the sun during its most significant moments: south the summer solstice, the winter solstice, and the equoniox. The result is a succession of frameworks that fit into each other and suspend the movement of the sun.

3 to 1 The modern age prevents mankind from truly being one with the earth. Digital practices have detached us from our origins. 3 to 1 aims to move people through three different spaces, each with a particular relationship to the earth (above, on, and below). The passage from one to the other heightens awarness of one’s connection to the earth.
