2016 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

WHY I GIVE PHILANTHROPY HAS A LONG AND DISTINGUISHED HISTORY IN PITTSBURGH . From the nineteenth century onward, those who live and work here have given generously to sustain causes and institutions that enhance our quality of life. Andrew Carnegie, whose name is found on the local museums and libraries he created, set a high standard for future philanthropy. Giving to and at Carlow University is no different. Steeped in the rich history and mission of the Sisters of Mercy, responding to unmet needs has become a hallmark of the university, one which is impressed upon our students throughout their time here. As alumni they are asked to pay forward the opportunities and support they received, so that future generations of Carlow students can do good and do well. Every year for the last 16 years, Laure King Valentine, Class of 1988, has answered that call with consistent and loyal giving to the Carlow Fund. She gives because she wants “the seeds of opportunity that took root in me to continue to bloom in each new generation of Carlow students!”

This sentiment was shared by hundreds of others during the 2015-2016 fiscal year, including Patricia Kern, Class of 1992, who gives every year because “Carlow helped me when I was in need,” and Rose Eckenrod, Class of 2002, who says “Carlow helped me grow as a person, and I want to help others have that same opportunity. Carlow is more than an excellent educational experience— it is a life experience!” It is this collective spirit that enables Carlow to close the gap between opportunity and reality for so many of our students; to find solutions, inspire change makers, and share knowledge; and to ensure that Carlow University, and its graduates, are positioned for success.

IMPACT OF ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

JAHLISE CHARD, CLASS OF 2015

Shortly after New Year's Day of her senior year of high school, Jahlise Chard '15 received a phone call as she sat in her foster mother’s living room. A Carlow admissions counselor let her know she had received a scholarship. “My worries about my future dissipated. I felt so relieved, and so overcome with joy that I cried,” she recalls. Although she had wanted a college education very much, it had felt like an insurmountable goal. Completing a major in Communication for Advocacy and two minors, in art and political science, Chard found her voice at Carlow. Along the way, she helped many others find theirs, too.

2016 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

Chard thrived in Carlow’s supportive community where she says she formed “great bonds” with her peers and professors.

neighborhood as a ninth grade mentor through Carlow’s Youth Media Advocacy Project (YMAP). She helped the students identify key issues within their school district and craft a media campaign about art education funding.

“I found a tight-knit community—a space to grow, to learn, to be creative,” she says.

“I helped them to find their voices, so they could advocate on behalf of themselves and their peers,” says Chard.

She quickly took advantage of every opportunity presented to her. She interned for the US Department of Transportation Research at Carnegie Mellon University. She studied abroad with Semester at Sea, visiting more than 20 international cities and 12 countries while taking classes in photo journalism, world religions, and ethics— and doing volunteer work in the Republic of Mauritius.

As Chard formulates her next steps, she wants to continue to reach out to those less fortunate, perhaps through nonprofit work serving underprivileged communities. None of it, she says, would have been possible without the support she found at Carlow.

“I had unique experiences,” she says, “that I never imagined I would have in my lifetime.”

“At Carlow, I found powerful role models and mentors who pushed me to challenge myself and explore new ideas,” she says. “Here, I found a home.”

And every Friday for a year, Chard visited Obama High School in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty

2016 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

REUNION GIVING A class gift is an annual tradition practiced by the members of reunion classes each Homecoming at Carlow University. The Carlow University Office of University Advancement would like to congratulate the top earning class and the class that engaged the highest percent of participants. The Class of 1966 was the top earner, raising $73,156. (When we tell you every single dollar counts, we mean it!) We owe a million thanks to Norma Jean Grazzini LeClair ’66, who truly got into the spirit. LeClair inspired her classmates by matching all new and increased gifts to the Carlow Fund and launched her class into the lead for raising the most money. The Class of 1966 was also leading with the highest level of participation, but the Class of 1956 made a final push and tied for first place. Carlow is thrilled that 23 percent of both classes made gifts and that collectively, all reunion classes raised $127,626.83 for the Carlow Fund. On behalf of our students, we thank all of the donors who participated for their generosity and wish you a happy reunion year!

William and Catherine Callaghan were Catherine McAuley’s adoptive parents who named her the sole heir of their Dublin estate in 1822, a gesture that sparked McAuley to start the Sisters of Mercy and inspire enormous good that would grow over two centuries.

The Endowment: A Lasting Legacy

Summa Cum Laude Circle ($500,000–$999,999) Donnelly Family and National Endowment for the Humanities Scholarship

Alumni, friends of the university, and organizations have taken generous action over the years to establish permanently endowed funds through outright gifts, bequests or other deferred gifts.

Marilyn P. Donnelly Distinguished Writer in Residence Endowment

Some have established named scholarships either in the donor’s own name or in memory or honor of a loved one, favorite teacher, or mentor. Others have provided a permanent source of funding to ensure that a program will be supported for generations to come. These permanent endowed gifts ensure that a donor’s intentions and the university’s needs are supported in perpetuity.

2016 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

MISSION Carlow University, rooted in its Catholic identity and embodying the heritage and values of the Sisters of Mercy, offers transformational educational opportunities for a diverse community of learners and empowers them to excel in their chosen work as compassionate, responsible leaders in the creation of a just and merciful world.

VALUES MERCY The identifying value of Carlow University is Mercy, encompassing all that we are and do as a University. Inspired by our God of Mercy, this value urges us to open our hearts to our students, our colleagues, and our world. In the tradition of action and contemplation, we seek practical ways of addressing need and we engage in reflection in order to understand and integrate our experiences. Education offers us the tools to address unjust structures and dehumanizing situations. Each discipline provides a lens through which we can envision our place in our own personal transformation and that of the global community. The values of Service, Discovery, Hospitality, and the Sacredness of Creation further expand our understanding of the power of Mercy to change our world. HOSPITALITY In Hospitality we welcome the wholeness of each person, creating a space in our campus community for all individuals with their varied beliefs, cultures, orientations and abilities. Openness to the gifts and perspectives of all creates a community rich in diversity and committed to inclusion. SERVICE The value of Service calls us beyond ourselves to prioritize the needs of others over our own self-interest. Our efforts to identify and respond to the needs we see around us lead us to interact with persons and institutions in ways which are transformational. Our spirit of compassion leads us to practical action on behalf of those in need. DISCOVERY Through Discovery we open ourselves to the totality of our human experience, to the educational enterprise, to our relationship with the Divine, and to the wonders of the world in which we find ourselves. Discovery energizes our intellectual curiosity and desire for learning. It leads us ever deeper in the engagement with our chosen discipline and engenders a spirit of awe at the complexity and variety of creation. SACREDNESS OF CREATION This value leads us to a respect for each person and for all of creation. In gratitude for the beauty and variety of our world and its inhabitants, we commit to a culture of sustainability and to the preservation of a world where all are reverenced and all may thrive.
