TO OUR BENEFACTORS A Message from the President Dear Carlow University Benefactors: Since this past July, when I assumed the presidency of this extraordinary institution based on Mercy values, I have had the honor of meeting many of Carlowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s benefactors. For some of you, your desire to give stems from your experiences during your time at Mount Mercy College, Carlow College, or Carlow University. For others, it is because you recognize Carlow University as an exceptional institution of higher education that, with your financial support, can reach new heights and assist even more students. In fact, for many of our students, achieving a college degree would be a dream and not a reality if it were not for your generosity. While there may be differing reasons why each of you give to Carlow, there is one constant theme. If I had to describe in one sentence why our benefactors are committed to Carlow University it would be this: You believe that Carlow University, its faculty and students, can make a difference in the world. This publication provides us with an opportunity to highlight, through the stories we share, our ongoing commitment to excellence in everything that we do. This, of course, is just a sampling of Carlowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s achievements. CARLOW FUND CHALLENGE Michele Atkins and Elsie Hillman Challenge Alumni Michele Rehfeld Atkins ’82, chair of Carlow’s Board of Trustees, likes a good challenge. A straight-A student in high school, Atkins completed one year of college but was forced to take time off to earn funding for her education. The year was 1963. She soon married and moved to Texas when her husband, Pat Atkins, became a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Health Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Atkins recalls being the only faculty wife who did not have a college degree—a fact that continued to gnaw at her. When the family ended their journey in Pittsburgh, Atkins was challenged to finally finish what she’d started. “We were driving on Route 19,” she remembers. “Our kids were maybe 6 and 8, and I was again bemoaning the fact that I never finished my degree.” Knowing just how much education meant to his wife, Pat pulled the car over at the busy Fort Couch Road intersection, turned to Michele, and encouraged her go for it. Find the right program, he told her. Enroll. There is no time like the present.

That was the deciding moment, recalls Atkins. She accepted the challenge and enrolled, at age 32, as an undergraduate at Carlow College. Since completing her bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1982, Atkins has worked professionally in not-for-profit management, strategic planning, fundraising, and governance for such organizations as the Makea-Wish Foundation, the American Lung Association, Gilda’s Club of New York City, and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Most recently, she was president and CEO of Heritage Community Initiatives of Braddock, Pa. She wants to make sure others have the same opportunities that she has had. “My husband and I were both the first in our families to go to college,” says Atkins. “We feel a huge responsibility to ensure that others are also able to go to college and graduate.” This past Spring, Michele and Pat Atkins created a ground-breaking $50,000 challenge towards The Carlow Fund, matching all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to that amount, through June 30, 2013. The Carlow Fund provides financial support to student scholarships

and financial aid, technology enhancements, library resources, and faculty development. The Atkins’ challenge was answered by Carlow supporters in just five weeks—and was soon enhanced by trustee emerita Elsie Hillman, who doubled the challenge to make it $100,000. “Carlow University is and has always been a very special place in Pittsburgh and in my heart,” says Hillman. “As a former trustee, I learned so much about the Mercy tradition and wonderful approach to higher education, especially for those young, bright women who choose Carlow. Carlow will always have my support.” When the challenge reached completion, Carlow Fund donations totaled $544,889—a huge, unprecedented success. Atkins is thrilled by this accomplishment and motivated by fellow donors’ desire to see the University grow and thrive. “Carlow helped to shape why I did what I did with my professional life,” she says. “It’s where I learned that I wanted to make a difference.”

GROUND-BREAKING CAMPAIGN Alumni Support Propels Carlow Toward Comprehensive Campaign While Carlow University’s Comprehensive Campaign may be quietly moving forward toward its public phase, alumni support has been anything but quiet. Propelled into motion by the 40 diverse members of the National Alumni Campaign Leadership Council, Carlow alums have raised $8.4 million toward their $10 million goal. That’s nearly one third of the Comprehensive Campaign’s $37 million overall goal. During the 2012-2013 fiscal year, these efforts have supported a new University Commons; endowment growth; and the Carlow Fund—including the new 1929 Society honoring Carlow’s 1929 founding by the Sisters of Mercy. The early stages of the campaign emphasized leadership gifts and personal contact with alumni across the nation. And, according to the leadership council’s alumni division co-chairs, there is something ground-breaking going on. “We are in the middle of an evolution,” says co-chair Barbara Kraft ’83. Already, this is the most successful alumni campaign in University history. Kraft came to Carlow at age 40 to complete her bachelor of science degree

in nursing, with a second major in theology and ministry. She has spent most of her professional career in diocesan education. A former alumni board president, she founded the Barbara E. Kraft ’83 Endowment for Theology and actively volunteers with students. “I have a feeling of responsibility to tell others, ‘look here, do you know what we have in this city, and what it has to offer?’” says Kraft. Co-chair and Carlow trustee Jeanne Adamson Gleason ’60 points out that every member of Carlow’s Board of Trustees has made a major gift to the capital campaign. “It shows real faith in the institution,” she says. “It’s a real incentive for alumni to give back.” Gleason’s undergraduate degree in sociology and anthropology led her to a development career in music and the arts. “We were recipients of other peoples’ generosity,” says Gleason. “Students of today need this even more than we did. We need to help them accomplish their goals.” The council’s third co-chair, Nancy Stuever ’73 is today the graduate nursing program chair at Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She credits Carlow for her success.

“Carlow gave me a chance to go to school when I wasn’t getting many chances,” she recalls. The oldest of five children raised by a single mother, Stuever was not sure how she would be able to afford college. “We were on welfare for a period of time,” she recalls. “There were few resources.” Thanks to financial aid and scholarship support from Carlow, Stuever completed her bachelor of science degree in nursing and went on to receive a master’s from Pitt and a doctorate from the University

of Phoenix. She and her husband endowed Carlow’s Maysie E. Wisnom Endowed Scholarship, in honor of her mother. “Carlow provided me with the education and basis for everything I’ve been able to do,” emphasizes Stuever. She is excited to motivate others to give to their alma mater, as well. “My husband and I are alumni of four schools,” says Stuever. “Over the years, we chose Carlow to be the primary school we give to, because it gives so much back to the community it serves.”

FAMILY SUPPORTS CARLOW TRADITION The Midgleys Go Bowling 4 Bucks to Support Their University When her family was searching for a way to honor Eleanor Keener Midgley, an alumna from the class of 1943, they knew it had to revolve around Carlow University. “Carlow is a very integral part of the Midgley family tradition,” said Elizabeth Eleanor Erwin Brown, who shares an alma mater with her grandmother as a 2008 graduate in elementary education. “Ever since I could walk, I have been attending functions at Carlow with my grandmother.” Some of Brown’s earliest memories are going to the annual Christmas parties, where Midgley handmade elf suits for her granddaughters to wear when they stood next to Santa. She also remembers attending the Rosie Hauber Scholarship Luncheon, and going on lunch dates with her grandmother and Sisters of Mercy. When the family surprised Midgley several years ago with a scholarship in her name, she was excited beyond words. “I never thought I’d have a scholarship named in my honor,” she said. “They couldn’t have done anything better for me.” To endow the scholarship, her family wracked their brains for something they could do as a fundraiser.

“Eleanor has three passions in her life: her faith, her family, and Carlow,” said Brown. “So when we started brainstorming fundraising ideas, we knew it had to be a family friendly event. We wanted something families could enjoy together. Who doesn’t love bowling?” Brown and her cousin Emily Bechtel, a 2007 graduate of the professional counseling program at Carlow, are the co-chairs of Bowling 4 Bucks, the annual event to raise money for the Eleanor Keener Midgley ’43 Endowed Scholarship. Midgley, Brown, and Bechtel are also on the Carlow Alumni Board. Bowling 4 Bucks has grown for the three years they’ve been hosting it. The first year there were about 18 people in attendance, and that grew to more than 50 the following year. In 2012, the event attracted 80 people, and the hope is that it will continue to grow. “We have about $2,000 to $3,000 left until the scholarship is fully endowed,” said Brown. “We would like to extend the Bowling 4 Bucks experience not only to our families and current donors but to the entire Carlow community.”

The Midgley family makes it clear that the reason the event continues to grow is because of the honoree. “Eleanor Mae is an amazing woman,” says Kathryn Midgley, another granddaughter and another student at Carlow, where she is currently a junior in the forensic accounting program. “She’s the reason our family is what it is. We are a force. She has taught us to be strong in the face of adversity, to fight for what is right, and to help those who cannot help themselves.”

Eleanor Midgley has been a trailblazer for her family in life and at Carlow. Now, thanks to her family, future students will get the opportunity to experience the Carlow spirit that Eleanor—and the rest of the Midgley family—exudes. “Our grandmother’s dedication to her faith and to Carlow have always been inspiring,” said Bechtel. “The scholarship felt like the best way to celebrate her and it has been an honor to co-chair the event. We hope more members of the Carlow family will join us in the future!”

RECENT GRADUATE GIVES BACK Miles Against Melanoma Scholarship Strikes G.O.L.D. for Jessica Vega-Rogowicz A decade ago, Jessica Vega-Rogowicz might have had a different association for the word “gold”—as in a golden tan. “During my college years, I was unaware of the damaging effect of sun and tanning bed exposure,” said Vega-Rogowicz, who graduated from Carlow in 2004 with a dual degree in elementary and special education. “I vacationed yearly at the beach and started using tanning beds while I was in college.” Following two bouts with melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, Vega-Rogowicz has a different outlook on tanning and sun safety. She formed a local chapter of Miles Against Melanoma, a nationwide nonprofit organization that aims to fight melanoma by increasing awareness; supporting patients, survivors, and families; and fundraising for research. At her alma mater, she established the Jessica Vega-Rogowicz Miles Against Melanoma Scholarship, which provides $1,000 for education majors to use for their studies. As part of the application process, students are asked to submit a lesson plan detailing how to be safe in the sun to avoid health hazards like melanoma.

“I established a scholarship because I feel it is good to give back and help someone with his or her college expenses,” said Vega-Rogowicz, who lives in Baldwin, Pa., and is a middle school teacher in the Hempfield School District. “I also hope to encourage a teacher or future teacher to think about how they might raise awareness of sun safety in their students.” Because of all of Vega-Rogowicz’ efforts to raise awareness about sun safety and the dangers of melanoma, the Carlow University Alumni Association presented her with the first G.O.L.D. Award, recognizing Graduates Of the Last Decade who embody the Carlow traditions of excellence and shared values through professional achievements, personal accomplishments, and dedication to the mission of the University. “Jessica has distinguished herself in her personal and professional life, but also in her dedication to Carlow,” said Rose Woolley, director of alumni relations at Carlow. “She is richly deserving of this award, and she is a tremendous advocate for both sun safety and for Carlow.”

The Miles Against Melanoma Pittsburgh Chapter’s inaugural year was immensely successful as they raised $25,000 through a dinner event, a golf outing, a wine tasting, and a 5k run/walk. The proceeds benefited the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

“When you are diagnosed with cancer, it hits you—I have cancer—and it makes a huge emotional impact,” VegaRogowicz said. “I had a lot of negative energy, and I needed to channel it in a positive way. Establishing a scholarship is one more positive way that I can raise awareness about sun safety.”

Philanthropists of every shape and size roam the halls of Carlow’s Campus School, sharing their time, treasures, and talents with those near and far. Meet, for example, Cecelia Cecconi, an eighth-grade student whose birthday parties take place at World Vision, where guests sort supplies for the needy rather than unwrap presents. Cecconi has

logged many additional hours at World Vision—and also conducts fundraisers to help support a Brazilian child. “It’s good to help people,” she says. “Doing good things makes you feel like a better person.” Chase McCorkle, another eighthgrader, spent much of this past summer working with young children at The

Campus School’s summer camp and at PISA sports camp. “Helping others makes you a better person,” he agrees. “It makes me really happy and motivated.” Cecconi and McCorkle’s work counts toward their 20-hour eighth grade service requirement, a Campus School program coordinated by religion teacher Peggy Lazar. “Service is an integral part of The Campus School community,” says Lazar. “Volunteering promotes leadership, cooperation, and respect through working with others. Students young and old receive personal satisfaction from knowing that they made a difference.” Long before they enter eighth grade, students learn about the Mercy mission in their classes and have many opportunities to give unto others. “Even the youngest of our student body participate in service and think about the wellbeing and the needs of others,” says Michelle Peduto, The Campus School’s executive director and head of school. “They also like to ride trikes,” she laughs, recalling a sidewalk transformed into a tricycle parking lot during the Trikeathon for St. Jude’s Research Hospital. “We do so much here, it’s just incredible.” “Many parents told me that the children themselves really took pride in asking for donations to

help the children at the hospital,” says Trikeathon coordinator Erica Armbruster, director of the Carlow University Early Learning Center and assistant director of early childhood programs at The Campus School. Campus School faculty and staff also take pride in giving and, in 2012-2013, were the first group to give to The Campus School Annual Fund—used to provide support for immediate needs, including technology, programming, and teacher training. Peduto calls faculty and staff support of the Annual Fund “awe inspiring.” To date, the Annual Fund stands at $20,479.25, with a goal of $100,000 by the end of the 2013-2014 school year. “It shows their commitment,” says Peduto. “Our faculty and staff believe in what they are doing, and they were the first ones to step forward and support it.” That belief in the school’s mission is at the heart of so many philanthropic efforts and the inspiration for countless hours of service to others. As Cecelia Cecconi puts it, “Helping people is the basis of morality. It’s doing something good for everyone, and you know it’s going to make someone happy.” This past May, approximately 90 Campus School children, ages 3-6, brought their trikes to school, rode laps around the campus green, and raised nearly $4,800 for St. Jude’s Research Hospital.

EITC FUNDING A Win-Win for Corporations and The Campus School Parental and community support continues to be imperative to the success of The Campus School—including funding generated through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), this program enables businesses to invest directly in tomorrow’s workforce by turning tax dollars into scholarship funds. Often, parents have encouraged their employers to participate in this program, generating assistance where it is needed the most—need-based scholarships. “Scholarship money goes to those with the greatest needs,” says Michelle Peduto, The Campus School’s executive director and head of school. “The number of those needing scholarships has greatly increased since I’ve been here,” she says. “It has been difficult for some of our parents who have lost jobs or find themselves in difficult financial circumstances to continue their relationship with The Campus School. We try to help them do that.” Through the EITC program, businesses may make a contribution to The Campus School of Carlow University and in turn receive a tax credit for up to 90 percent

of their contribution. The funds are used to provide tuition assistance to scholastically qualified, but financially challenged students, providing support for qualifying low-income students regardless of where they reside. Bill Gatti, president of Trek Development and the parent of three Campus School children, is a strong believer in the EITC program. “The EITC program is an excellent way for business owners to direct state tax dollars towards educating our children,” says Gatti. “It is an efficient and inexpensive way to support the mission of The Campus School.” Gavin Mann is also a Campus School parent. His company, Comptec Inc, has also supported EITC. “The EITC is a win-win,” says Mann, “a great opportunity to take advantage of a tax deduction and a great way to support The Campus School.” Deborah F. Graver, Carlow University trustee and president and chief operating officer at Fragasso Financial Advisors, calls the EITC program a win for both companies and educational institutions in our region. “Through EITC, we were able to redirect tax dollars to help provide scholarship funds at Carlow’s Campus School,” she says.

“As a Pittsburgh–based financial planning and investment management firm, we have long had a vested interest in the future of our region,” says Graver. “We feel strongly that the ability to redirect tax dollars to help families afford the cost of their children’s education is integral to the success of our young people going forward. “If our gift helps just one child enjoy the benefits of a Campus School education,” adds Graver, “then it’s money well spent and a future that is soon to be well shaped.” It is important for businesses to apply early (after July 1) as the program is very popular and available tax credits are used up quickly. An additional program introduced last year—OSTC (Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit)—provides students in the lowest-achieving school districts (bottom 15 percent) the opportunity of school choice. THE SCIENCE OF SCHOLARSHIPS Sharing a Love of Science and a Willingness to Give Back Adriane Pawluk and Sally Seubert are separated by about 50 years, but despite the age difference they share a common bond: a love of science. Seubert, who graduated from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) in 1958, majored in dietetics, minored in chemistry, and went on to teach nutrition in hospitals and at the university level. “I enjoyed studying science and took a lot of biology and chemistry,” says Seubert. Pawluk, a resident of the Sharon/ Hermitage, Pa. area, will graduate from Carlow in the spring of 2015, and is majoring in molecular biology. She hopes to work in Pittsburgh-area hospitals this summer participating in clinical research. “Beyond that, I would like to pursue an MD/PhD specializing in oncology and epidemiology,” she says, although she has not narrowed down specific programs that she is interested in. But besides the love of science, they have another bond in common: Pawluk is the recipient of the Florence E. and Alfred J. Seubert Endowed Scholarship, established by Seubert in memory of her parents, and awarded

to a student in the biological sciences who has attained sophomore level or above with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. “It really meant a lot to me to be selected to receive this scholarship,” says Pawluk, who also received the McGillick Scholarship her first year, the Sister Mary Joy Haywood Scholarship, and the Carlow Scholarship. “There were many students who applied for it, so I didn’t expect to get it, but I was honored to be chosen.” Because she now lives in Texas, Seubert was thrilled to meet Pawluk during Alumni Weekend. It the first time she was able to meet face-to-face the recipient of the scholarship she established. “Neither of my parents had the opportunity to go to college, but they both wanted college for me,” says Seubert, whose father died when she was in the eighth grade. “I was the beneficiary of a half scholarship when I was a student at Mount Mercy. I know how important it was for me to receive it, and I promised myself that if I had the chance I would provide a scholarship for future students.”

Pawluk is grateful that Seubert kept her promise. “I hope my accomplishments show the potential of what today’s students can achieve when they are supported by those who have once walked in their shoes,” she says. “I hope that I can do for future students what others have been able to do for me.”

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS Carol Husa Is a Good Sport When It Comes to Carlow Erik Husa, age 5, is always playing sports, and his mother, Carol (Schmidt) Husa, spends a lot of time taking him to his games, whether it’s basketball, hockey, soccer, or T-ball. “Now that I’m not coaching anymore, I thought I would have more free time,” Carol says with a laugh. “But if there’s a sport out there, he wants to play it.” Erik can blame it on his genes. Growing up, Carol Husa played whatever sport was in season. At Carlow University in the early 1990s, she played three sports, but it would have been four, if she had the chance. “Softball didn’t become a sport at Carlow until after I graduated, or it would have been four,” says Husa, a Bethel Park, Pa., resident, and a graduate of the class of 1994, where she played basketball and volleyball and ran cross-country. As both a former student-athlete and an assistant basketball coach at her alma mater, Husa can attest that the student-athlete experience is different at Carlow than it is at many universities. “Carlow University has studentathletes in the truest sense of the

word,” says Husa, who is a certified public accountant (CPA) employed by BNY Mellon in Pittsburgh. “They are there to get a good education and continue playing a sport they are passionate about.” Such dedication to both sides of the student-athlete designation has attracted plenty of notice. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), of which Carlow is a member, consistently ranks Carlow Celtic athletic teams in the nation’s top 25 for grade point average. Keeping the grade point average high can be a difficult achievement for any student, let alone one who has to balance time in study and class with time spent in practice and games. “When you are a student-athlete, you really have no choice but to figure out how to balance your time,” says Husa. “I realized I only had a certain amount of time to do all the things I needed to do, so finding time to study was a necessity.” Learning how to balance time has come in handy now that she is a CPA, a wife, a mother, and all the rest of the responsibilities that come with those roles. Despite the busy life, she finds

time to help with Carlow Athletics when needed, and to contribute to the Carlow Annual Fund. “I contribute to Carlow because I had a handful of scholarships when I was a student,” she says. “The fact

that someone helped me out makes me want to help others. If there is a student who is just scraping by financially, I want to see her or him afforded the same opportunity to get an education that I was.”

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY Carlow Alumna and McAuley Ministries Honored Mary Hoffman Fricker ’68 and McAuley Ministries were honored at the November 14, 2013 National Philanthropy Day Award Ceremony, sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals, at Pittsburgh’s Heinz History Center. Fricker was honored as an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser. A former first-grade teacher, she was recognized for her philanthropic efforts to reach inner-city elementary school children. McAuley Ministries, the grantmaking arm of Pittsburgh Mercy Health System sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, received the Outstanding Foundation award. After graduating from Carlow, Fricker experienced poverty firsthand as a teacher in West Mifflin. Today, seeking to give back, she wanted to do something tangible. She asked herself, “What does every kid like?” The answer? New shoes. For the past seven years, Fricker has worked to identify Pittsburgh area elementary schools that qualify for the most free lunches. She makes sure

that each child in the school’s entire first grade receives a pair of brandnew Converse sneakers in popular colors and patterns—which she herself selects and purchases. Over the years, Fricker has donated more than 1,000 pairs of shoes to schools across the city. This year, on October 11, 2013, 103 pairs of shoes were delivered to first grade students at Fulton Elementary in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood. “It’s so uplifting,” said Fricker. “Someone who didn’t even know them gave them a new pair of shoes. I hope it makes a difference to them that they see kindness in the world.” McAuley Ministries is no stranger to kindness—and no stranger to Pittsburgh area philanthropy, focusing on grant-making in neighborhoods traditionally served by the Sisters of Mercy. This past August, McAuley Ministries announced $1.2 million in grants, mainly supporting business development, education, services to persons who are homeless, and capacity-building initiatives in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, Uptown, and West Oakland communities.

Since its establishment in 2008, McAuley Ministries has awarded more than $11.1 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations. “These most recent grants exemplify our ongoing commitment to helping create neighborhoods that are safe, healthy, and vibrant,” stated Sister Sheila Carney, RSM, Carlow’s Special Assistant to the President for Mercy Heritage and chairperson of the McAuley Ministries Board of Directors.

FACULTY AND STAFF DEMONSTRATE THEIR COMMITMENT TO CARLOW

During a two-week campaign in Spring 2013, almost 70 percent of Carlow University faculty and staff members pledged their support to the University and the Comprehensive Campaign. Loyalty to Carlow is evident among many who are dedicated to the University’s mission. The campaign’s totals are impressive: 159 staff members pledged $22,663 and 65 faculty members pledged $32,175.

The Callaghan Society Members Callaghan Society members are part of the Carlow University tradition that began in 1822, when the Callaghans, the adoptive parents of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, made her the sole heir of their estate in Dublin. At that moment they could not possibly have imagined the enormous good, which would result from their bequest over the next two centuries. Today, legacy commitments from Callaghan Society members through their wills, trusts, or other estate gifts ensure the vitality and development of Carlow University and its Mercy-based mission from one generation to the next.
