MESSAGE FROM THE CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER Welcome to 2020 and the decade of our own Roaring Twenties…whatever that will eventually turn out to mean for all of us. It’s my hope this is the decade when the arts achieve a new prominence in our daily lives, deepening their impact and serving as a much-needed oasis in modern life. The term “modern” is an interesting concept. In the 1920s, being modern was all the rage for flappers (young women with their bobbed hair and short drop-waist dresses) and sheiks (young men with new styles found in The Great Gatsby). Modern refers to a decade when change was rampant with the impact of new information technologies (the telephone and radio), the arrival of a new entertainment medium (talking pictures), a wild ride on the stock market with soaring profits and a society witnessing changing roles for women. Sound familiar? Artistically, a Coco Chanel revival could be stunning, a renaissance of Art Deco and Bauhaus could be geometrically magnificent and a greater interest in “All That Jazz” could be harmonious. Please join us for a splendid kick-off to this new decade with a distinctive array of unique events and interactive programs. Above all, here’s hoping 2020 is “The Bee’s Knees!” and “The Cat’s Pajamas.” (Google it if you are not sure what that means.)
CULTURAL ARTS OFFICE The City of Carlsbad’s historic support of arts and culture as a core value led to the establishment of its Cultural Arts Office in 1986 as part of the city’s investment in the visual and performing arts. Its programs include a robust series of concerts, exhibitions, special events, arts education opportunities and public art installations. The Cultural Arts Office strives to enhance the vitality of the city and the quality of life for all residents by supporting an environment where arts and cultural organizations thrive and people of all ages enjoy opportunities for creative expression and lifelong learning.

PERFORMING ARTS GUEST ARTIST RESIDENCY Debuting in 2019, this new program brings guest artists from the visual and performing arts to Carlsbad for an extended stay. Please check out the Cultural Arts website for details on activities throughout the community. North Wind featuring Ray Li March 7 – 12 Ray Li brings the sound of North Wind and infuses futuristic technology into music performance. Using an instrument of his own creation, North Wind manipulates sound in thin air using motions and gestures. With the flick of a wrist, North Wind can conjure sounds ranging from acoustic to electronic. Dynamic visual elements also respond in real time to movement, creating a truly multisensory experience. North Wind was formerly called Veserium. As a former engineer and Ivy League physics graduate, North Wind will bring outreach in the form of STEAM education and workshops, as well as dynamic performances to Carlsbad.
FRONT ROW FRIDAYS On the second Friday of each month take a journey through different genres in the performing arts! Enjoy a performance from top talent in the region and beyond with artists offering insights into their world during these engaging events. All programs are free and seating at Schulman Auditorium is first come, first served. Alex Dang! Friday, March 13, 7 p.m. Alex Dang started performing poetry at 17 and hasn’t slowed down since. He has been on the Portland Poetry Slam nationals team in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, making him the only Asian American poet in Portland’s history to be on the team four years in a row. Alex has earned his way to becoming the Eugene Poetry Grand Slam Champion in 2014, 2015 and again in 2017. He has been a TEDx speaker for both the University of Oregon and Reno, Nevada. His work has been featured on Huffington Post, Upworthy and Everyday Feminism and has been viewed over two million times on YouTube. Alex has performed in over 50 cities, 30 states and wants to know what your favorite food is.
San Diego Opera presents Opera Exposed! Friday, April 10, 7 p.m. Opera Exposed!, San Diego Opera’s community engagement concert series, returns to Carlsbad! Concerts include staged operatic arias and scenes featuring University Partnership and Apprentice artists. These exceptionally promising young artists provide engaging performances to communities in San Diego. Los Angeles Choreographers and Dancers presents Tap Dance Widows Club Friday, May 8, 7 p.m. Past and present meet for an eclectic celebration of life in Tap Dance Widows Club, a 50-minute film and live dance production that tells an inside story from 1930’s Hollywood to today. The work features a filmed conversation of three women, all widows of well-known tap dancers – Alfred Desio, Jon Zerby and Fayard Nicholas – reminiscing about their husbands and the bonds created between them. The interweaving of past and present, through both video and dance, make this piece not only unique, but deeply touching.
STARRING ARTISTS Journey through the minds and lives of performing artists with Starring Artists. At each session, Nina Garin, editor of the San Diego Union Tribune’s Pacific Magazine, interviews the artists, followed by an audience question and answer session and a live performance. All programs are free and seating at Schulman Auditorium is first come, first served. North Wind featuring Ray Li Saturday, March 7, 7 p.m. North Wind is the solo project of Ray Li, formerly one-half of the music duo Veserium. A hybrid of musician and technologist, Ray creates stunning visual performances which highlight custom-built musical instruments. Seffarine Saturday, April 4, 7 p.m. Seffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. This project received support from the California Arts Council, the Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
San Diego Ballet Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a ballerina? San Diego Ballet principal ballerina Stephanie Maiorano will share her journey to the stage, and what’s next in her career. Stephanie Maiorano joined San Diego Ballet in 2007 and her high level of technique has given her leads in a wide range of classical and contemporary ballets.

Salsa never looked so good in the City of Los Angeles, as a melting pot of cultures and ethnicity come together to give birth to a multicultural female band that will set the stage on fire!

The City of Carlsbad’s popular series is celebrating its fifth year with selections that have been recognized by critics as representing some of the finest cinema from across the globe. VISUAL ARTS WILLIAM D. CANNON ART GALLERY Edges Frayed March 1 – May 24 Reception: Saturday, Feb. 29, 5 – 7 p.m. This exhibition brings together artists Bhavna Mehta, Michelle Montjoy, and Irma Sofia Poeter in a material-rich conversation about construction and connection. Using fine stitching and cutting, fraying fabrics and abstract shapes, text, color, texture, volume and shadow, their work weaves a narrative that seeks to clarify and extend the hidden layers of identity and understanding. Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints June 14 – Aug. 9 Reception: Saturday, June 13, 5 – 7 p.m. Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints, an exhibition focused on the art of quilt-making, presents seventeen works by seven fiber artists representing the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Curated by internationally renowned artist and teacher Nancy Crow, Material Pulses contributes to the dialogue of contemporary textile arts. The exhibition is organized by Mid-America Arts Alliance and ExhibitsUSA.

Cannon Art Gallery and at local community events. THREE-PART ART Exhibit: Edges Frayed Exhibition Dates: March 1– May 21 Three-Part Art Dates: Mondays – Wednesdays, March 16 – April 29 Online Registration for Carlsbad Unified School District schools begins Monday, Feb. 10 This free, multi-part arts educational program is designed to provide arts education experiences themed to the current exhibit in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery during the school year for grades K-12. Art project and gallery tour may vary by grade level and age range.
GUEST ARTIST RESIDENCY: MISSOULA CHILDREN’S THEATRE Theatre Intensive for Young Performers with Guest Artist Missoula Children’s Theatre This week-long program begins with an audition day and culminates in two public performances. A set, lights, costumes, props and makeup are provided, along with everything it takes to put on a play. Beginner to experienced students, ages 6 – 15, will be cast and well-rehearsed throughout the week, learning lines, song and choreography to perform in a musical. Ages: Dates: Time: Where: Cost:

SUMMER ARTS PROGRAMS Club Pelican At Club Pelican, science and art unite in one amazing camp located at the Batiquitos Lagoon! Guided by experienced docents and arts instructors, campers will hike the lagoon’s trails and explore. Inspired by the natural wonders they observe, campers will paint, draw and create artwork of all kinds based on their observations and lessons about nature. This fun-filled and very popular camp is held in partnership with the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation. Ages: Dates: Time: Where: Cost:

Theatre Arts Comedy Intensive Students will experience what it takes to put on a comedy performance from the first joke until the final curtain call.
