Grandfriends Kindness Project Thursday, Dec. 5, 3—4:30 p.m., DN Join Kids for Peace the first Thursday of each month for an intergenerational play date! Youth and seniors will partner up to complete fun acts of kindness like planting a garden, creating a gratitude jar and making treats for local firefighters. Thanks to the generosity of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, instruction and all supplies will be provided free of charge. You only need to bring your kind heart. All youth and seniors are welcome! Children under eight years-old should be accompanied by an adult.

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season has officially arrived, let's take a moment and come together with Kids for Peace to remember 'tis better to give than receive. Youth and adults will participate in a food drive, write notes of compassion for the homeless, and sing songs of joy and peace. We hope you can join us for this beautifully meaningful and timely event.

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Tuesday, Dec. 10, 10—11:30 a.m., #116 Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. Join us to learn about the impact of Alzheimer's; the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia; stages and risk factors; current research and treatments available for some symptoms; and Alzheimer's Association resources. This program will help you learn: •Warning signs and symptoms •Causes and risk factors •Diagnosis and treatment •Stages of Alzheimer’s disease •Ways the Alzheimer’s Association can help

Free Hearing Screenings & CTAP Phone Distribution Event Wednesday, Dec. 11, 9 a.m.—12 noon, Lobby Audiologist, Dr. Joyce Crawford with Sonus Hearing Care Professionals, will provide free hearing screenings in conjunction with California Telephone Access Program (CTAP). This program provides specialized telephone equipment and services to residents who have an active phone line but have difficulty hearing.

All hearing-impaired, eligible residents from this event will be provided with a free amplified phone on-site.

Age and income level are not considered. Reservations are required. Call 760-602-4650 to reserve an appointment.

Holiday Hula Recital

Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1—2 p.m., AUD Come celebrate the holiday season with the warmth of aloha, as the students of Halau Hula 'o Pualani present their 18th annual ho'ike (recital). Wear a lei, bring your Aloha spirit and enjoy the story-telling dances of Hawai'i, performed in beautiful costumes. Doors open at 12:40 p.m. Come early as seating is limited for this free performance.

Let’s Go for a Ride: How to use Uber, Lyft and Turo

Thursday, Dec. 12, 10—11:30 a.m., #111 Learn about easy and affordable alternatives for getting around, using your smartphone or computer.

Companies like Uber, Lyft and Turo are changing the way we order rides or rent cars. Different types of vehicles are available, including ones that can handle wheelchairs or car seats. We will explore how to use apps (access) for these services in a hands-on, free session. Bring your own smartphone and all your questions for this informational meeting.

Introduction to Heart Coherent Tai Chi Kung

Guided Imagery and Meditation

Monday, Dec. 16, 11 a.m.—12 noon, #116 Guided imagery and meditation are related paths for exploring how body and mind can collaborate to create the serenity to handle pain and anxiety. Guided Imagery is an ideal tool for exploring hopes and dreams.

Meditation includes a variety of strategies for quieting and centering mind, heart, and physical energy. In this class, we will explore a number of guided imagery and meditation practices to find what really works for you.

This class will include some light, physical stretches and tension releases. We'll move to a brief explanation of the specific imagery or meditation practice to be explored, and then undertake a guided inner journey to a destination where you can study and explore your own inner inspirations, feelings, fantasies and fulfillment.

Osher Lifelong Learning – Architecture of the Silk Road: China Wednesday, Dec. 18, 10—11:45 a.m., AUD December brings the first-part in a five-part series on the Architecture of the Silk Road, which has brought to mind the images of exotic lands, adventurous travel, inspiring cuisines and luxury goods. The lecture will focus on the architecture of Beijing, the Great Wall and Shanghai concessions. The results of contact with Indian Buddhism and the West will also be explored.

Diane Kane, an architectural historian and retired Senior Planner for the City of San Diego, provides her expertise on the subject.

Seaside Singers 6th Annual Holiday Concert Wednesday, Dec. 18 & Thursday, Dec. 19, 1:30 p.m., AUD Join us this holiday season for numbers that will include carols by Alfred Burt, a Hanukkah selection, a sing-a-long, The Christmas Song by Mel Torme, solo selections, a Spanish piano solo by Violeta and a concert selection of "T'was the Night Before Christmas," by Clement Moore, as presented by Fred Waring.

The (mature) 35-member voice group is backed by Jeff Sell as Director, Mark Phelps on Bass and Violeta Petrova as Pianist. The four- and five-part choral group was formed to give area residents an opportunity to sing and perform with others who share their passion for singing.

Members must be able to read music and use a computer to read emails and print their own music.

The Culinary Lab

whip up fun, food, health and science to optimize an epicurean lifestyle. Become the master of your taste buds while learning the health benefits of creative and fresh grown food. Channel your culinary artist while sharpening your science acumen. The lab is located on the 2 nd floor of the Pine Avenue Community Center, 3209 Harding St, next to the Senior Center. $10 per class offered weekly.

Belly Up, Belly Down, Belly Dance! NEW! Fridays, 3:30—4:30 p.m., #107

Join us for this new Introductory into the Mid-Eastern dance class! The class will focus on isolations, rotations, circulations, balance, posture, arms and hand movements to lubricate our joints, while listening to chimes from the ancient East. Instructor, Nicki Vaccar, is knowledgeable and experienced in Middle-Eastern Belly, Greek Folk and Hawaiian dance.

Senior Commission Corner

Some Doctors now prescribe sound healing therapies including drum circles and group singing. Amanda Domnitz, RN, RSH, E-RYT will share easy and fun sound-healing techniques you can use immediately for health, and connection to Source Energy.

After 16 years as a Registered Nurse, Amanda is now an educator and maverick in Sound Healing. She orchestrates a Sound Healing Education Program with the faculty at the Soul of Yoga in Encinitas. Amanda focuses on empowering individuals through the experience of Sacred Sound. She is the founder and director of the Soul of Yoga Sound Institute and coowner of the gallery & studio, Sacred Sound of the Soul.

Tech Help with Teens Thursday, Dec. 5, 2–3 p.m.

L.I.T.E. students will be available for two 30minute sessions at the Senior Center to assist you with all your technology needs. Whether you have questions about the computer, your cell phone, or a camera, they are ready to help.

Just bring in your devices and get the help you need! This is a free activity, but registration is required as space is limited. Sign-up at the front desk to reserve a spot in one of the 30-minute time slots.

Be a Friend First Project

Silver Paddles – Pickleball

Learn the fastest growing sport in North America. This one-hour class will prepare you for skills needed to play this fun social game.

Instructor, Raudel Barba, Founder and Director of Coaching, United States Professional Pickleball Association, just won a gold medal in Men’s Singles in the 2019 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships in November!

The four-week class session starts Thursday, Jan. 2, 9 to 10:30 a.m., $54.90 resident/$61 nonresident.

Girl Scout Troop 1175 is bringing their goal of being a friend first to the Senior Center.

Beginning in January, there will be five jars placed in the lobby. Each of these jars will be filled with messages meant to help uplift and shift your mood. Jars will be available for those who need a smile if they are feeling sad, angry, lonely, or anxious. You can keep the message as a reminder or pass it along to someone who may need it. Either way, the cadettes of Troop 1175 are hoping to lift your spirits in 2020 for your best year yet!

WORDS OF HOPE

Improv Your Life This class covers the basics of improvisational exercise—keeping you quick on your feet and even quicker in your brain! Based on the games from improvisational theatre guru, Viola Spolin, these games will help you to trust your instincts, while having a blast connecting with others.

Starts Thursday, Jan. 30, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Six-week classes $125.10 resident/$139 nonresident.

Beginning in December, the Words of Hope board will be making an appearance every day in the dining room.

Participants are encouraged to write words of hope, and together with students in the L.I.T.E. program and other after school activities at the Pine Center, will build a wall of hope.

Everyone is invited to add to the board as well as read what others post.

Share a message of hope for others, what hope means to you, or what you hope for in the future. Inspire Carlsbad to carry hope into the New Year and across the generations!

The Carlsbad Senior Center serves nutritious, hot meals Monday through Friday in our Dining Room. The requested donation for

seniors who are ages 60 and up is $3.50 — you need not be a city of Carlsbad resident to dine. A $5 lunch fee applies to nonsenior guests of seniors.

Reservations must be made by 12 p.m. one day or up to two weeks in advance, by calling 760-602-4655. Tell us which day(s) you will be attending lunch and leave your full name and phone number. Cancellations can be made by calling 760-602-4655.

Dining room seating is available at 11 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. You may forfeit your lunch reservation if you do not check-in prior to 11:45 a.m. We also deliver home meals Monday through Friday to homebound seniors living in Carlsbad, for a requested donation of $4. In addition, frozen meals are available for the weekend and will be delivered on Fridays. For more information, call 760-602-4650.

Transportation for lunch to and from the Carlsbad Senior Center is available Monday through Friday to Carlsbad seniors, ages 60 and up, and who are unable to drive. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Monday through Thursday.

Wednesdays, transportation is available for shopping. Call 760-602-4650 for schedule and reservations. Special transportation options are available every Tuesday for lunch & bingo, as well as the 2nd Thursday of each month for lunch and our free monthly movie.
