CARLSBAD Many departments, one team By Scott Chadwick, City Manager I’m happy to kick off our first employee newsletter of the new year. This is one of the important ways we can stay connected across all our different departments here at the city. We want to be sure to celebrate the notable milestones achieved by our teammates, professionally and personally. Speaking of milestones, the City Council is in the process of developing its first strategic plan. This plan will serve as our road map for the next five years, helping to align all city staff and departments under common priorities to support our community’s vision for the future. The plan will replace the annual goal setting process and allow us to work toward some exciting initiatives consistently over the next five years. One of the most gratifying parts of the strategic planning process has been the opportunity for departments and divisions to collaborate on shared priorities. I love seeing our employees bringing their own areas of expertise to work as one big team. Finally, diversity, equity and inclusion was an important theme when the City Council first started the planning process last March. In this issue we highlight the work of our employee committee and our new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Manager.

City Staff Spotlight Nancy Magpusao Burke Senior Program Manager for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Q. What is your role? A. Hi, I am Nancy Magpusao (Mag puhs ow) Burke and I use she/her pronouns. I started in this inaugural position in September 2020, and my role includes applying an accessible and equitable framework to professional development, educational training, organizational structures and practices. My functions include and are not limited to proposed legislation, initiatives, administrative policies, language and cultivating social awareness. Q. What do you enjoy most about your job? A. It’s rewarding to make a connection with persons, concepts or exploring meaning, from pop culture references to past and current narratives, trends, or contemplating stories from differing positions and perspectives. I’m fascinated with exploring and reflecting on what motivates people to behave the ways we do. I imagine how power, position, privilege, perception and process play out amid the culture and environment and like to re-imagine how a shift of our inner perceiver and focus impacts external relationships and the environment. Looking ahead, I’m eager to implement initiatives from our DEI Work Plan (thank you DEI Committee and DEI Steering members) and from the findings of the employee engagement survey. Q. What do you like to do when you are not working? A. I like to read. I’m fascinated learning about constructions of time, space, quantum physics, identities and institutions. I’m also a fan of being out in nature – I especially appreciate hiking and biking to keep myself grounded and centered. I have two teenage kids, one in college and one a senior in high school. I met my partner while attending college and working in the same department. We have been together for over 24 years. We are beach, desert and mountain campers and love to mountain bike on trails as a family.
