Grandfriends Kindness Project: “What’s Your Story?” Thursday, Oct. 3, 3 – 4:30 p.m., DN

Autumn is here and kindness is in the air! Join us for another Grandfriends Kindness Project - a free, monthly program that’s all about giving and receiving kindness! Youth and seniors will ask each other questions about their life, make bookmarks together and read stories to one another. The group will also be collecting new (or like new) children's books. If you'd like to contribute, bring us your favorite children's book. Everyone is invited for this fun and friendly event to share and learn life lessons! All youth and seniors are welcome. Children under eight years-old should be accompanied by a parent. Please register in advance online or call the front desk carlsbadconnect.org.

Ken Waldman, Alaska’s Fiddler Poet Wednesday, Oct. 9, 10:30—11:30 a.m., AUD Ken Waldman’s presentation and performance is like taking a cruise to Alaska without having to leave Carlsbad! Ken has lived and traveled extensively throughout Alaska and he is a former college professor that has 11 books, nine CDs, and his performance combines Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry and Alaska-set storytelling. This event is presented as part of the Guest Artist Residencies program through the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office. Don’t miss this Alaskan experience!

Special thanks to the generosity of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and Kids for Peace for bringing this kind, intergenerational project to the Carlsbad Senior Center.

Walking Wednesdays NEW! Wednesday, Oct. 9, 8:30—9:30 a.m., PACC Tired of walking alone? Looking for a new way to motivate yourself and others to get moving? Being active is the secret to staying healthy and walking is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get moving. Join us to move towards better health & fitness while having fun and making new friends. Meet at the Pine Avenue Community Center and wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and light clothing. This is a free group and registration is required. Walk locations will vary throughout the month and dogs, strollers and friends all welcome. Join us for this Mid-Eastern introductory dance class! The class will focus on isolations, rotations, circulations, balance, posture, arms and hand movements to lubricate our joints, while listening to chimes from the ancient East. Instructor, Nicki Vaccar, is knowledgeable and experienced in Middle-Eastern Belly, Greek Folk and Hawaiian dance.

At this talk, attendees will learn: • How to identify the tactics “difficult” people use to manipulate, intimidate or gain control. • How to deal with these tactics in clear, easily understood ways. • Underlying reasons this might be happening and how you can use this understanding to detach rather than engage • Why detachment and action are far superior than reaction, fear, disengagement or retaliation. • The basics of communication that might help...and when to use various phrases or techniques depending on the situation. Michele Downey gives tips and tactics she has honed over her 30-year career as a Registered Nurse, Master Addictions Therapist, and licensed Marriage and Family Counselor.

Aging in Place: Hoarding Disorder— Characteristics and Treatment Tuesday, Oct. 29, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., #111 Join us for this monthly Successful Aging in Place series, which offers insights from professionals who share their expertise concerning specific aspects of how to age in place successfully. Are you or someone you know concerned about clutter? Do you have a friend who can’t bear to part with anything? Join us for this informative presentation. We will learn about hoarding as a mental health disorder, characteristics of hoarding, treatment of hoarding disorder and how to help someone struggling with hoarding to receive treatment. Verbatim Theater Free Performance Wednesday, Oct. 30, 4 - 5 p.m., AUD Join us for a unique and impactful performance by Sage Creek High School drama students who will be performing the true, unedited stories of volunteers from the Carlsbad Senior Center. These stories reflect life’s trials and tribulations and will teach insightful life lessons. Pre-show refreshments and reception at 3:45 in the Dining Room. Verbatim theatre is a form of documented theatre in which plays are constructed from the precise words spoken by people interviewed about an event or topic that helped form the person they became.

Carlsbad Newcomers host Lisa Rodman, CEO Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Wednesday, Oct. 2, 9:45 – 11:30 a.m., #111 Lisa has been a Carlsbad resident for over 30 years and Foundation team member for nine years. She was named Woman of the Year in 2019 for District 36 and she is passionate about building awareness of our “People’s Lagoon.” Learn the many ways you can enjoy all the lagoon offers while supporting conservation and preservation of precious water resources.

The requested donation for seniors who are ages 60 and up is $3.50 — you need not be a city of Carlsbad resident to dine. A $5 lunch fee applies to nonsenior guests of seniors. Reservations can be made in person, by calling 760-602-4655. Please tell us which day(s) you will be attending lunch and leave your full name and phone number. Cancellations can be made by calling 760-602-4655. Dining room seating is available at 11 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. You may forfeit your lunch reservation if you do not check-in prior to 11:45 a.m. We also deliver home meals Monday through Friday to homebound seniors living in Carlsbad, for a requested donation of $4. In addition, frozen meals are available for the weekend and will be delivered on Fridays. For more information, call 760-602-4650. Transportation for lunch to and from the Carlsbad Senior Center is available Monday through Friday to Carlsbad seniors, ages 60 and up, and who are unable to drive. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Monday through Thursday. Appointments must be made in advance. For all transportation reservations, call 760-602-4650. Wednesdays, transportation is available for shopping. Call 760-602-4650 for schedule and reservations. Special transportation options are available every Tuesday for lunch & bingo, as well as the 2nd Thursday of each month for lunch and our free monthly movie.
