Morningstar Investment Lectures

Presenter Shelley Murasko is thoroughly familiar with Morningstar’s mutual fund investment education resources and bases her lectures on this content. Area residents have free access to this Morningstar guidance through Carlsbad City Libraries’ online database. Each weekly class examines the changing monthly information.

Presently, she works on many community and school garden projects in the San Diego area. In addition to teaching Gardening 101 at the Carlsbad Senior Center, she has also taught horticultural classes at the San Diego Botanic Garden, Carlsbad City Library and the Carlsbad Garden Club. She is very involved in local school gardens and has volunteered at Buena Vista Elementary School Garden and the Carlsbad Community Garden Collective. Her work with the Carlsbad Senior Center will provide seniors with information about how to create low maintenance vegetable, flower and herb gardens for their backyard or patio. The Senior Garden Class will also introduce students to the hands-on gardening experience at the Pine Street Community Garden where they can observe successful gardeners at work and help to create the Senior Garden Plot. Jano will also be leading the April Community Garden Club adjacent to the Senior Center. She is passionate about gardening and commented, “I am excited to teach all gardeners and potential gardeners of any age how to grow food!”

National Volunteer Week is April 7 – 13 National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to come together to tackle tough challenges and build stronger, more resilient communities. Each year, Carlsbad shines a bright light on the people and Senior Center causes that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who generously share their time, talent and voice to make a difference at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Our 150+ senior center volunteers, with an average of almost 100 hours each selflessly donate their time and talents in the form of teaching everything from dance, language and meditation to serving meals, delivering meals to homebound seniors, fielding questions at our very busy front desk, scheduling bus routes, helping in the office, or assisting with tax returns. There are many other ways in which people serve here, and our whole community reaps such great rewards from their altruism. We’d like to take this opportunity to tip our hats in sincere appreciation—we truly couldn’t do it without you. Senior Center staff are hosting the annual Volunteer Brunch at The Crossings in Carlsbad as a thank you for the tireless time and talent bestowed on the Senior Center. For information on becoming a volunteer, contact the City of Carlsbad’s Volunteer Services at 760-434-2929 or email at volunteers@carlsbadca.gov.

For the Garden of Your Daily Living…. Plant three rows of peas: Peace of mind, peace of heart and peace of soul. Plant four rows of squash: Squash gossip, squash indifference, squash grumbling and squash selfishness. Plant four rows of lettuce: Lettuce be faithful, lettuce be kind, lettuce be happy, lettuce really love one another. No garden should be without turnips: Turnip for service when needed, turnip to help one another, turnip the music and dance. To conclude our garden we must have thyme: Thyme for fun, thyme for rest, thyme for others, thyme for ourselves. Water freely with patience and cultivate with love. Your garden is abundant because you reap what you sow.
