Volunteer Spotlight Sandra Carpenter, The Writer Over 30-years ago, nothing had appeared under the byline of Sandra Carpenter. After Whittier College, she was a Social Worker for Orange County until she and her husband, Ken, took early retirement at age 50. Yet today, well over 650 published newspaper and magazine clippings fill her files, proving it is never too late to begin something new if the desire is strong enough. She always said, “Luck had more to do with my success as a writer than anything else. Going in the right place at the right time made me seem more winning than I was. Still, I did cream the competition many years younger than I, more times than I can even now recall.” A seven-year columnist for Gannett Newspaper in San Bernardino and Palm Springs in the 90’s, plus six years of weekly travel columns for a Freedom newspaper, brought press trips all over the world, where her view of the globe was brought to Southern California in Sunday feature sections. She headed six Southern California magazine columns, including great enjoyment being the Grandparenting columnist for San Diego Family Magazine for several years. Sandy’s own grandchildren are her main joy…Sandy has two sons, Paul Carpenter of Stockholm, Sweden, and Brent Carpenter, of El Dorado Hills, CA. Paul’s daughter, Kristin, and Brent’s children, Caitlin and Cole Carpenter, are the next generation of whom she is very proud…all college graduates. Casa Verde, her romantic/suspense novel was published by Rubenesque Romances in 2000, completing a life-long dream of calling herself a novelist. In 2002, an autobiography, Sandy Paths, was published detailing in 65 intriguing chapters the unique life she had journeyed. That book was begun in the previous Life Story class of Mac Hartley, which she enjoyed for six years before taking over the reins herself. Recently, she led Oceanside Senior Center’s Poetry Workshop weekly for almost a decade, as well as seven years heading the class of Carlsbad Senior Center’s Writing Your Life. But poetry was Sandy’s beginning in the writing game, and the special joy of her current existence. She edited the last edition of Carlsbad Library’s Magee Park Poets literary journal. Poetry readings for two decades all over San Diego County enriched the listeners with the direct and personal poetry of Sandy Carpenter.

Spotlight on Health: Aug. 2019 Get Recommended Screening Tests and Immunizations The National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention says recommendations for preventive services depend on your age, sex, health status, and family history. Find out which screening tests and immunizations are recommended for you. What’s Important to Know? •
It is important to keep up with your screening tests and immunizations to prevent certain kinds of illness. Recommendations for preventive services depend on your age, sex, health status, and family history—every person is different.
•
All preventive services have possible benefits (pros) and harms (cons). Depending on your values and preferences about these benefits and harms, you may wish to receive additional, fewer, or different services from those that are recommended. Talk with your health care team about the recommendations for screening tests and immunizations that are right for you.
•
Screening means looking for a condition before there are any signs or symptoms of that condition. If you already have a symptom of the condition, you should talk with your provider about it, even if you were recently screened and no problem was found.
•
Regardless of age, gender, health status and family history, most Veterans should be screened for alcohol abuse, depression, high blood pressure, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), military sexual trauma, obesity, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and tobacco use.
•
Veterans should follow the appropriate cancer screening guidelines. Most Veterans should receive a flu shot every year and a tetanus shot once every 10 years.
Senior Commission Corner The Mission of the Senior Commission is to champion an age inclusive environment that promotes wellness, vitality and education that leads to a vibrant quality of life. There are no meetings over the summer. Meetings resume in the fall on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 3 – 4 p.m. Agendas, minutes and more information is available on the commission website at: http://www.carlsbadca.gov/cityhall
