Instructor Spotlight Saleemah Muhammad, ZUMBA Instructor Native San Diegan Saleemah Muhammad doesn’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t drawn to music and dancing. The proud wife of an Army Chaplain retiree, and mother of seven, has “always just loved to dance and move to music!”

Volunteer of the Month Mikkie Sawyer

That love led her to step aerobics, then Jazzercise®, and finally to Zumba®, where she became a licensed instructor in 2013. “Walking into my first Zumba® class in 2011 was a revelation and a joy. I felt like I was home!” But the high energy and high-impact classes eventually began to take a physical toll, and that is when she discovered Zumba® Gold – the specialty format class designed for active older adults, and any age participant that desires a fun but simpler, low-impact Zumba class. “I am so passionate about sharing the Zumba® Gold program because it truly encompasses the best of both worlds. I strive to bring all the fun, fitness, and flavor of Zumba® but in a format that respects aging bodies and joints. I include a broad variety of genres and international rhythms, packaged around simpler, easy-to-follow, low-impact moves; designed with just the right amount of complexity to sharpen the brain and improve agility and mobility.” Saleemah loves to guide students on their journey to staying active, fit and healthy, and encourages them to reconnect with their playful side during classes. Dancing in Zumba® Gold boosts your mood, benefits your physical and mental health, and it is just plain fun!

Mikkie Sawyer was nominated by the customer service staff she assists every Tuesday. For Mikkie, volunteering comes easy to her as she has a passion to help where and whenever she is needed. She loves her community and cherishes every wonderful friend that she has made while volunteering. For her, every moment that she assists in this position is rewarding and refreshing. She savors welcoming senior center customers to numerous activities that are planned “just for them.” She especially enjoys having a front row seat in making someone else’s life just seem a little bit easier. Mikkie hasn’t always been a volunteer. Her professional career started in Chicago, where for 18 years she worked for a prestigious Financial Services Company as a Mortgage Servicing Agent for five states maintaining 2500 personal home loans. She then relocated to Northern California as an Office Manager for six years and ended her career in beautiful sunny San Diego working as an Administrative Assistant for a Human Resources Department for 17 years. Mikkie feels privileged to have worked with great people in several International locations in many professional capacities. Mikkie is now discovering a more settled life while she eases into her golden retirement years, savoring each and every precious day with her three wonderful children, 11 grandchildren and one darling great-granddaughter.
