What is the Summer Reading Adventure? Readers of all ages can earn incentives as they learn, explore and discover this summer. Enjoy virtual, live and pre-recorded performances, engaging and educational virtual programs led by library staff and more. This year's theme, Read Beyond the Beaten Path, combines reading, learning and adventure to experience something new and exciting this summer.

How do I participate? REGISTER – Visit carlsbadlibrary.beanstack.org or use the Beanstack Tracker app for Android or iOS. Log into your account or create one if you are a new reader. Sign up for the Summer Reading Adventure challenge that matches your grade or age. RECORD – Read and complete activities to earn points. Track your progress in Beanstack. Can't get to a computer? Ask for a paper log at the library to track your reading and activities. REWARDS – Earn reading rewards while supplies last. Visit your local Carlsbad City Library location to pick up your rewards. Last day to pick up is Aug. 20.

Teen Movie: Spider-Man: No Way Home Monday, June 27 3:00 p.m. | Dove Library Schulman Auditorium Rated PG-13; 2 hours and 28 minutes Peter Parker’s identity has been revealed and he must ask Doctor Strange to help him out. Teen Art Contest July 1 – July 31 On August 6, author Lynne Cox will discuss her book Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog. For the entire month of July, teens can submit two pieces of artwork based around the Read Beyond the Beaten Path theme and the outdoors. Teen Talent Show Thursday, July 14 6 p.m. | Dove Library Schulman Auditorium Show off your dance skills, sing a song, play an instrument or perform an original poem, play or short story (up to 1000-word limit) in front of an audience and a panel of three judges. A Quiet Place Virtual Teen Escape Room June 13 – Aug. 6 Grades 6 to 12 Escape the mysterious terrifying creatures that hunt by sound in our digital escape room where you will solve puzzles to continue the story. It has been a year since you’ve seen other human life and supplies are running low! You must find a new place to settle, but where will you go? S’mores Teen Kit Pick up available at all three locations in July Grades 6 to 12 In celebration of reading beyond the beaten path, teens can pick up a s'mores kit during the month of July while supplies last. Kit includes everything needed to enjoy a s'more – you provide the fire.

Adobe InDesign: Create a Mountain Sunrise Design Learn how to create a simple graphic illustration of a mountain sunrise using the shape tools, pathfinder tool and color gradients. Adobe Lightroom: Editing Outdoor Photos Learn how to create mood and tone using Lightroom and get tips and tricks on how to create filter presets. Adobe Photoshop: Best Practices for Nature Photography and Editing Photos Get some tips and tricks on how to set up your shot and practice using Adobe Photoshop to make your photos pop. Adobe Premiere Pro: Packing Your Media Properly Need advice on organizing your footage? Using pre-selected footage of nature and camping learn how to upload files, organize them in folders and place them in the timeline for editing. Silhouette Cameo: Camper Window Cling Create a window cling to show off your love of camping and the outdoors. Learn to use the trace tool to design a camper van that will be cut out on window cling vinyl.


Silhouette Cameo: Personalized Backpack Do you enjoy crafting and creating? Learn how to use the trace tool in Silhouette Studio to design an image to cut out on heat transfer vinyl and iron to a backpack. Teen Adobe Photoshop: Reimagine Spider-Man (Grades 7 – 12) Do you like coloring and comic books? Learn how to use the coloring tools in Adobe Photoshop to create your own version of a Spider-Man comic book page. Teen iMovie: Create a Spooky Camp Movie (Grades 7 – 12) What are the key elements to creating a spooky movie? Music, camera movements and just the right shots. Join us and learn how to make your own spooky camp movie. Tinkercad 3D Design: Camping Gear Get an introduction to the Tinkercad 3D design software. In this class you will learn how to manipulate and combine shapes to create a piece of camping gear.


MOVIE EVENTS July Movies: Outdoor Fun Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. Dove Library Schulman Auditorium The Great Outdoors July 6 Comedy (1988, PG, 1h 31m) A family summer vacation is disrupted by an unexpected visitor. Indian Summer July 13 Comedy, Drama, Romance (1993, PG-13, 1h 37m) Seven friends reunite for a week-long reunion at a summer camp in Ontario they used to attend as children which is now threatened with being closed down. Moonrise Kingdom July 20 Comedy, Drama, Romance (2012, PG-13, 1h 34m) A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and try to find them. The Kings of Summer July 27 Adventure, Comedy, Drama (2013, R, 1h 35m) Three teenage boys spend a summer building a house in the woods together and learn valuable lessons about family, friend-ship and independence.


SPECIAL EVENTS The Jungle Book Virtual Family Escape Room June 13 – Aug. 6 All ages Have fun in our digital escape room where you will solve puzzles in order to continue the story. Take a trip into the jungle with Bagheera and Baloo. Mowgli stumbles into an unfamiliar part of the jungle where he hears whispers of the return of the fierce Shere Khan. Page Turner Adventures June 13 – Aug. 6 Kindergarten to Grade 3 Page Turner Adventures is a virtual, interactive learning experience for children in kindergarten up to grade 3. This summer, kids can follow along to virtually participate in ocean themed comedy shows, field trips to the ocean floor, coral inspired crafts and mix up some cool recipes fit for the finickiest fish. Grow Your Garden June 25 (Dove Library) | July 23 (Cole Library) 10 a.m. to noon Carlsbad City Library’s Grow Your Garden program lets you swap succulents, seeds, fruit, vegetables and herbs from your garden with your neighbors and learn new gardening techniques.


SPECIAL EVENTS CONTINUED Author Event with Lynne Cox Saturday, August 6 All ages 2:00 p.m. | Dove Library Schulman Auditorium Enjoy an afternoon with best-selling author Lynne Cox, who is internationally known for her long-distance open-water swimming achievements. She will discuss her new book Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog, about a Newfoundland puppy who grows up to be a S.I.C. rescue dog. Paws to Read Saturday, August 6 1:00 p.m. | Dove Library Courtyard Join us in the courtyard and read your favorite stories to certified therapy dogs from Love on a Leash. Teen Art Show Saturday, August 6 1:00 p.m. | Dove Library Courtyard The artwork created by teens throughout July based on the Read Beyond the Beaten Path theme will be displayed in a judged show at the Dove Library. The chosen winner will receive a library reward pack.
