COMMUNITY
4
In a society stained with propaganda and media obsession, we reach the point of essential change and growth. Riots tainted as a negative retaliation to anarchy vs. hierarchy, we are painted as crumbling under the restraints of conformity. When one man fails, another prevails- music rises, creativity grows, apprehension and hope spreads nationally. Independence develops and a sense of unity is born. Community is no longer a local pride of bubbles and niches, but rather a definitive coming together of a notion, a society, a human race. With technology rapidly developing, metropolitans rising alongside the organics, and youth culture emerging as creative, there is no longer a right or wrong, a this or that- We become one.

' HERE’S TO THE CRAZY ONES, THE MISFITS, THE REBELS...' -Steve Jobs
REBEL WITH A CAUSE In a world of constant struggles, it has become apparent that things have changed. People are no longer afraid to say what they are feeling and more than ever the time to rebel is now. Demonstrations, petitions and walkouts are proof that no one is scared to say the word ‘no’ anymore, and for good reason. Political, economic and global issues affecting the people has come to an all time high in a life where people can scarcely afford to pay their bills, let alone eat. Where the average spend of petrol in a year amounts to a price higher than a used car. We have gone backwards in time, even though for most we are working harder than ever. The people do not need to take it anymore. It is time for us to fight for what we deserve. 9

' IF WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP OUR TECHNOLOGY WITHOUT WISDOM OR PRUDENCE, OUR SERVANT MAY PROVE TO BE OUR EXECUTIONER.' -Omar N Bradley
LOST IN TRANSLATION IIn the centre of a new digital era, life as we know it is rapidly erased and replaced with a technological obsession and addiction. The rise of social media sites means identity becomes a distant memory, where individualism is replaced with cyber clones of ourselves. Where a reflection is seen through a computer screen rather than a mirror, we are free to create a different online version of ourselves. Mannerisms are translated into texts and keyboards. We lose the interaction of personal touch. The handshake says a million words, but ‘OMG, LOL’ is slashing these words in half (literally). Instead of face-to-face interactions that are essential for social growth, ‘send me an email’ becomes a much needed aid to time management. But with every aid comes a hindrance. With India known to have more phones than people, it seems our social aspiration is for the human brain to be made from metal and circuit boards. Culture becomes undefined as the rapid advancements leave us lost to who we are as both individuals and as a race. Humans vs. robotics, intuition vs. facts. Perhaps it is correct after all to be named ‘The Lost Generation’. 13

' ALMOST ALWAYS, THE CREATIVE DEDICATED MINORITY HAS MADE THE WORLD BETTER.' -Martin Luther King Jr.
CREATIVE CONSCIENCE
The creative community is endless. It is no longer limited to the stereotypical artist. Once banished to the walls of the city stations, graffiti has now spread into the mainstream and sits comfortably on even the most unsuspecting on canvases. The cities are a jungle of glass buildings, the architect’s long-term vision, juxtaposed with the impulse art of the graffiti artist. The backing track provided by the music makers, producing an array of sounds taken from the past and pushed to make the music of the future. Aided by the digital community, art has a means to travel further, inspiring more than ever.

EDEN IN THE CITY Where people are finding their own piece of paradise in the city, organics and money saving ideas are on the rise and people are helping their community as well as themselves towards a better way of life. Commuting could become a thing of the past and we could see the streets full of people, rather than cars. Communities are rising up against the big chain supermarkets and refusing to conform to high priced international fuel, bringing organic British food for the people, by the people. Roofs across the country would have a make over that could change our electricity bills and the way we look at energy forever.

CONCLUSION All four of the trends covered originate from the overall idea of community and what it means today in a modern society. New communities are born from the negative through to the positive, alongside the creative, but all with one collective thought, the sense of belonging to something. Rebel with a cause, Lost in Translation, Creative conscience and Eden in the City can be used as individual inspiration but can also integrate to push ideas further.
