THE CENTER MOVING FORWARD The Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) is a very special place. It is a center of community as well as the arts. The performances are on caliber with what one might expect in a large metropolitan area, yet here we are in the splendor of the Rocky Mountains, in the center of the extraordinary Beaver Creek Village. Now entering its 19th season, the VPAC is carrying the momentum of its past into a bright future. Young people will find a new spark of inspiration from our STARS (Support The Arts Reaching Students) programming. Aspiring local artists will lay the foundation for the future of their craft through our Community Performance Fund (CPF). Once again, we will be honored to host world-renowned talents from near and far, representing a broad spectrum of the performing arts. In an era when digital entertainment has become prolific, live performance is even more precious. Thank you for your support of our community’s theater, and for helping us introduce the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and spectators to the performing arts. Alexia Jurschak, Chairwoman Vilar Performing Arts Center Committee

THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA S AT U R D AY, D E C E M B E R 17 7: 3 0 P M The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in the 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since their early days touring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and '50s, this group of blind,

African-American singers, has won five Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and has performed at the White House for three different presidents. The Blind Boys' live shows are roof-raising musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures, as evidenced by an international itinerary that has taken them to virtually every continent.

Severance, this new adaptation of Dickens’ Family series underwritten by the Hart Family Performance underwritten by Randi & Ed Halsell

"So amazing, it’s hard to put into words. Your eyes will deceive you, your heartbeat will race, and your mind will be blown." - NY THEATRE GUIDE
Broadway and TV star Adam Trent exemplifies a new generation of magicians. As one of the stars of the hit Broadway show The Illusionists, which shattered box office records during its 2014/2015 run, as well as his appearances on Good Morning America, America's Got Talent, Disney Channel, ABC, VH1, Rachel Ray, Travel Channel, SyFy and others, he is one of the most indemand-illusionists working today. Described as Justin Timberlake meets David Copperfield, Family series underwritten by the Hart Family Performance underwritten by the Castellini Foundation
his audience interactive performances are part magic, part concert, and part stand-up comedy, with a fast paced variety necessary for today's audiences. Approaching his craftiness with a tongue-in-cheek attitude allows him to connect with people who normally hate magic shows. In addition to his regular TV appearances and performance schedule, Trent has a vast history of philanthropic work for which US News & World Report named him "1 of the 10 Most Influential Youths in America." “Innovative, celebrated and accomplished, Winston is the real deal.”
Inspired by the seasons and topographies, George Winston’s concerts feature a variety of styles, including melodic folk piano, New Orleans R&B piano and stride piano. Having grown up mainly in Montana, Winston spent his formative years in Mississippi and Florida favoring instrumental rock and instrumental R&B, including Floyd Cramer, The Ventures, Booker T & The MG’s, Jimmy Smith and others. Inspired by R&B, jazz, blues and rock — especially The Doors — Winston began playing organ in 1967, switching to 24
the acoustic piano in 1971 after hearing recordings from the 1920s and the '30s by the legendary stride pianists Thomas “Fats” Waller and Teddy Wilson. This concert will feature Winston’s Winter Show, which will include: melodic fall and winter songs from his albums Autumn, December and Winter into Spring; Peanuts pieces from his Vince Guaraldi tribute albums; pieces inspired by the New Orleans piano and the stride piano traditions and songs from his upcoming albums. “These four very distinct personalities have fused into the world’s greatest string quartet.” – THE TIMES-LONDON
TAKÁCS QUARTET T H U R S D AY, J A N U A R Y 12 6 : 3 0 P M The Takács Quartet, now entering its 42nd season, is renowned for the vitality of its interpretations. Formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the quartet — violinists Edward Dusinberre and Károly Schranz; Geraldine Walther on viola; and András Fejér on cello — first received international attention in 1977, winning First Prize and the Critics’ Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. In 2012, Gramophone announced that the Takács was the only string quartet to be inducted into its first Hall of Fame, along with such legendary artists as Jascha Heifetz, Leonard Bernstein and Dame Janet 34
Baker. The ensemble also won the 2011 Award for Chamber Music and Song presented by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. The quartet has made 16 recordings for the Decca label since 1988 of works by Beethoven, Bartók, Borodin, Brahms, Chausson, Dvořák, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Smetana. The ensemble’s recording of the six Bartók String Quartets received the 1998 Gramophone Award for chamber music and, in 1999, was nominated for a Grammy. Based in Boulder at the University of Colorado, the Takács Quartet performs nearly 100 concerts a year worldwide.

Audiences across North America are falling in love with the funny, upbeat Good Lovelies — Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore, all of them best friends. Light-hearted songwriting and irresistibly buoyant dispositions have made the Good Lovelies darlings of the festival circuit and brought them through countless theaters,
and folk clubs. They have toured with Stuart McLean and the Vinyl Café and appeared on stage, and in-studio, with Broken Social Scene, Kathleen Edwards and Jill Barber. Winners of the 2010 Juno Award, or the "Canadian Grammy," and a nominee in 2012 for Roots Album of the Year — as well as winning Vocal Group of the Year in 2011 at the Canadian Folk Music Awards — the Good Lovelies are making waves across Canada, the United States and now in the U.K. and Australia. BRETT DENNEN F R I D AY, J A N U A R Y 2 0 7: 3 0 P M Singer-songwriter Brett Dennen creates folk-pop music that draws from his influences of classic Americana singersongwriters. Rolling Stone described Dennen’s 2013 album “Smoke and Mirrors” as, “cheerful, hook-heavy…[shifting] gracefully from lilting, breezy pop to heartfelt balladry.” NPR praised him, calling him, “capable of cranking out big, beautiful pop songs…[capturing] both the ornate and the simple.” With music that strips Dennen to his core as a songwriter with nothing to hide, his sixth studio album, “Por Favor,” — 38
more than a decade after his self-titled debut catapulted him to stardom—dives deep into loneliness, loss, and love and all its side effects. It’s the sound of an artist working through his insecurities in song, and thereby letting go of them. But it is by no means a sad affair, nor is it the “rainy-day record” Dennen initially thought he was making. Often framed by uplifting choruses and bright acoustic arrangements, these songs brim with optimism and the palpable sense that the tide is turning. Dennen’s music “urges maturing rock fans to turn up their radios and stay forever young,” says RollingStone.com. Concert series co-underwritten by Peggy Fossett and Doug Rippeto

THE REVIVALISTS T H U R S D AY, F E B R U A R Y 2 7: 3 0 P M
Since forming in 2007, the seven-piece New Orleans rootsdriven rock band has logged countless miles on the road, cultivating a high-octane live show and a studio presence equally steeped in instrumental virtuosity and charismatic vocal magnetism. Following two independent releases, 2010’s Vital Signs and 2014’s City of Sound, that time and dedication came to a head on the group’s third full-length album, Men Amongst Mountains (Wind-Up Records). As much as it’s the culmination of their work thus far, it opens up a new chapter for the band—David Shaw (vocals), Zack Feinberg (guitar), Ed Williams (pedal steel guitar), Rob Ingraham (saxophone), George Gekas (bass), Andrew Campanelli (drums), and Michael Girardot (keys, trumpets). 48
Upon release, Men Amongst Mountains debuted at #2 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart and Top 10 on the iTunes Alternative Albums Chart while quickly racking up nearly 2 million plays on Spotify all through word of mouth. Rolling Stone, NPR, Nylon and more sang The Revivalists praises as they launched a headline tour that sold out dates across the country. It all comes back to the group’s sound though. Each of the seven musicians adds his unique imprint to the group’s sound, which includes an element of surprise since it’s groove-oriented. From show-stopping pedal steel fireworks, bluesy licks on the fretboard, or the occasional booming horns, Men Amongst Mountains consistently surprises — as does the group during a live show. "Excellence, integrity, innovation, and creativity... Though the dancers are classically trained, they perform across the spectrum." — SANTA FEAN
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's bold vision — top global choreographers, distinctive groundbreaking repertoire, and virtuoso dancers — has fostered a jewel of a dance company in the American West. The company’s pioneering spirit arises from a dual set of home cities: Aspen, nestled in the Rocky Mountains, and Santa Fe, gracing the Southwestern plateau. Shaping the cultural landscape of these communities — and influencing the dance field at large — is a contemporary ballet company now two decades old. A deep commitment to curating new ballets while cultivating choreographic talent has resulted in a catalogue of adventurous
repertoire. A European sensibility glossed with American ebullience forges ASFB’s aesthetic, as the company has come to epitomize the contemporary-classical genre. The dance company sits at the heart of an unusually multifaceted arts organization. ASFB dance invention flows from this solid foundation, a wellspring of creativity. On the cusp of its 20th anniversary, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet enters a third decade of existence with an undiminished creative drive. New dancers, new dance voices, and a solid infrastructure characterize the company. The ever-evolving Aspen Santa Fe Ballet looks to a bright future with energy and optimism. V I L A R PAC .O R G

KEVIN NEALON S U N DAY, FE B RUARY 26 7:30 PM Kevin Nealon sets himself apart from other comedic performers with his unique sense of humor, dry wit and likeable demeanor. Nealon is best known for his nine-year stint as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and has received critical acclaim for his role in the Showtime series, Weeds. On the big screen, Kevin recently starred alongside Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in Just Go with It, a film about a man who enlists the help of his receptionist and her kids to land the woman of his dreams. Nealon also joined Nick Swardson in the comedy Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star. The film tells the story of a kid from the Midwest who moves out to Hollywood in order to follow in his parents’ footsteps and become a porn star. Nealon has found great comedic success in his extensive film career. In Anger Management, he played opposite Jack Nicholson and fellow Saturday Night Live comedian, Adam Sandler. He and Sandler also teamed up in Eight Crazy Nights, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, the latter of which grossed over $200 million worldwide. As one of the longest running cast members on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (1986-1995), Nealon created some of the show’s most memorable characters, including ‘The Subliminal Man’ and ‘Hans and Franz.’ Nealon’s reoccurring role as an anchor on ‘Weekend Update’ made the sketch a show staple. In 1988 Kevin earned an Emmy Award nomination as part of the SNL writing team.

DARK STAR ORCHESTRA W E D N E S D AY, M A R C H 1 7: 3 0 P M
Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead’s massive catalogue from 30 years of touring, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) recreates the original song-for-song set list for an entirely new generation of Deadheads. Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically-acclaimed live show at esteemed venues coast to coast and internationally. Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead classics the same way an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer-spirit is channeled, as 66
the players capture the passion and innovation of the original. Touring nationwide for nearly two decades, with more than 2500 shows in the rear view mirror, the band’s steadfast commitment to “raising the Dead” has drawn national media attention and a huge “deadicated” fan base. The group so refined their craft that original members of the Grateful Dead, including rhythm guitarist/singer Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, and keyboardist Vince Welnick, have performed with DSO.

THE CLEVELAND BAROQUE ORCHESTRA Jeannette Sorrell, Conductor & Harpsichordist T H U R S D AY, M A R C H 2 6 : 3 0 P M Named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire was founded in 1992 by the award-winning young harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell. Sorrell envisioned an ensemble dedicated to the baroque ideal that music should evoke the various Affekts or passions in the listeners. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric. Hailed as “one of the pre-eminent period-instrument ensembles” (The Independent, London), Apollo’s Fire made
its London debut in 2010 in a sold-out concert at Wigmore Hall, with a BBC broadcast. Subsequent European tours took place in 2011, 2014 and 2015. The group’s London 2014 concert was praised as “an evening of superlative musicmaking… the group combines European stylishness with American entrepreneurialism,” by The Telegraph. Apollo’s Fire has released 21 commercial albums which have won rave reviews. Five of the ensemble's album releases have become bestsellers on the classical Billboard chart. V I L A R PAC .O R G

As time continues to evolve, the soulful songbird’s name has become synonymous with grace, style, elegance and class. Belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets have created the unique platform of versatility that she is known and revered for. In 2009, she reunited with Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx for the first time in 30 years for the critically acclaimed LaBelle reunion album, Back to Now. Patricia Louise Holte blossomed from a choir member to lead vocalist for Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, then went on to become a solo artist. “Each year I grow, and that’s a blessing from God. Prolific singer-songwriter Clint Black has long been heralded as one of country music’s brightest stars. An astounding one-third of these songs eligible for major single release also achieved hit song status at country radio, while more than 20 million of his albums have been sold worldwide. Black’s continued success can be attributed in part to 76
his deep sense of country music history, and his humble gratitude in being an important part of it. With such a long and productive career, Black still keeps his output as fresh now as when he was a hungry, up-and-coming artist. While it’s wellknown that Black is an accomplished singer and guitarist, people may be surprised to learn that he is also proficient on drums and harmonica. Without a doubt, Black has earned his place as one of the most successful artists in the history of American music.

PIANO BATTLE W E D N E S D AY, M A R C H 2 9 6:30 PM Whether or not they are friends in real life, mercy is the last thing on their mind when fighting on stage. Winning the audience‘s heart is the only thing that counts. The brainchild of internationally accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, the Piano Battle sees the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The two artists, with distinctly different performance styles, take turns performing pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. Educated in Hanover, Berlin and London, Paul Cibis has
performed on five continents and established an international presence. In addition to his many concert appearances, he has been featured in radio and television programs around the world. Kern, born in South Africa, studied piano in Cologne and Berlin with Günter Ludwig and Pascal Devoyon. Keen to present classical music in unconventional ways, Kern has developed concert projects and formats that often feature unorthodox venues, or whereby musicians collaborate with artists in other fields, such as theatre and dance. “It’s easy to become engrossed in the incredible performances that take place inside the Vilar Performing Arts Center and to forget where you are. The quality of the theater, the very high level of talent that comes to the stage, you almost expect to walk out the theater doors and onto the streets of a major metropolitan area. Instead you walk right into Beaver Creek Village – it’s really something special that I don’t believe has an equal anywhere else in the world.” – marilyn & jim steane, underwriters
