THE 'HEART OF THE HOUSE' ... OUTSIDE A new outdoor kitchen in Cascade Village is 'spectacular' year-round

T

here ' s just something about grilling a meal in the backyard at home that makes it special. When the home is a high-end, luxury residence in Vail's Cascade Village and the backyard is seemingly part of a vast, sweeping grove of aspen trees at the edge of the national forest, however,

any meal can be more than special — it can be "spectacular." "This is a really nice environment, like taking the indoors outside. It's really become an extension of the house," says John Ferguson, a native of Scotland who shares just such a Cascade Village home with his wife, Violet, their two sons and their families. "The summers are

quite beautiful, and the autumns are spectacular. The fact it's so secluded and right on the ski mountain is pretty nice, too, I think." After completely remodeling the interior of the five-bedroom home, Ferguson says, they realized the opportunity to bring the backyard up to snuff was upon them, as well. "We weren't using the backyard

a lot, but we saw potential for making it a lot nicer. There was a lot of construction work going on at the house, in general, and we didn't want to revisit it; it was best just to do it all in one go," he says in his thick Scottish brogue. "It's all new now, inside, outside, everything. It's almost like a completely new home."

OUTDOOR LIVING

PHOTOS BY ON LINE INTERIOR DESIGN, LLC AND BRENT BINGHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

'A really nice spot' Working with their interior designer, Julie Seracuse of On Line Interior Design, LLC, the Fergusons broadened the scope of the project to include an entirely new outdoor living space in the home's backyard, complete with all the amenities they felt they needed to enjoy their alpine surroundings: heated decks; a hot tub; a gas fireplace; a cascading water feature dominated by an enormous bear statue; and an elegant dining area. And what better to make the new backyard the "heart of the house," asks Ferguson, than a fully-functional, outdoor kitchen complete with refrigerator and ice machine, two-burner gas stove, grill and hood, even a food warming drawer, along with plenty of cupboard space for all the culinary accoutrements? "It's a really nice spot," he says. "We thought it would be the place to be in the winter, because we're skiers and snowboarders. But we've

IT'S GREAT, EVEN IN THE WINTERTIME. AND IN SUMMERTIME, THIS IS THE HEART OF THE HOUSE. — JULIE SERACUSE found we enjoy everything about living there anytime, really. We're a mixed family, and we enjoy a variety of things, to be truthful." 'The heart of the house' Having evolved from the standard ol' charcoal grill out on the deck or patio for cookin' up burgers and brats into rather involved affairs capable of providing gourmet fare for large groups of family and friends, outdoor kitchens are nothing new, especially in eternal-summer-like climates like those found in Arizona, Texas, Florida or California. "We've got a very nice, functional kitchen on the property, too, but this gives opportunity to have two stations," Ferguson says. "Obviously, if you're catering, you can use this space, as well." What makes this outdoor kitchen different, however, says Seracuse, is its overall design making it usable here in the Colorado High Country, even in winter. To accomplish that, Seracuse first studied the functions desired of the roofed shelter for the kitchen area that is fully open on one side with glass doors by Nana Wall

Systems of Denver that fold into panels, then pivot out of the way. "Having an actual roof and being able to enclose the kitchen, completely, with the glass door is wonderful because they can get so much use out of it," Seracuse says. "That really keeps animals out of it, too, which is a huge deal in this area, where we have bears. Up here, that's something you really do have to consider." Extending from the roof of the kitchen structure and over the adjacent dining area is an open-frame pergola supporting a retractable awning made of Sunbrella fabric. "The retractable awning also gives them shade in the summertime to sit at the dining table, have cocktails and wait for the barbecue to come over," Seracuse says. "And since it's waterproof, even if it's raining, they can still hang out and have a party." Seracuse furnished the dining area and the sitting area next to the fireplace with the Dune dining and lounge collections from Crate&Barrel. "We love the clean lines and the way it translates the

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION, BUT IF IT'S NOT ATTRACTIVE, WHAT'S THE POINT?” — JULIE SERACUSE outdoors with the modern look of the interior," she says. The surrounding patio areas are heated, keeping the entire area snow-free — so the Fergusons can spend more time enjoying their outdoor living area, not shoveling snow off of it. "It's great, even in the wintertime," says Seracuse. "And in summertime, this is the heart of the house."

'Form follows function' The kitchen area itself is clean, contemporary and fully functional. Seracuse says she and the Fergusons spent many hours at the local Alpine Appliance Center picking out just the right combination of outdoor kitchen equipment that would work best in the space. Ultimately, they decided on the stainless-steel DCS line by Fisher and Paykal, not only for its looks and reputation, but for the flexibility of the components. "They were able to get absolutely everything they wanted with the DCS line, all coordinated. But it was like a Rubik's Cube trying to figure it all out, especially with the stainless-steel pieces because they come only in certain sizes. The stainless cabinets were particularly tricky, but we worked it out," Seracuse says. "The greatest challenges came with trying to fit everything they wanted into the space. It's not a big space, but fitting everything in, then the electrical, gas and plumbing — but that's a challenge anywhere, with any kitchen. "Another challenge is finding where things will work best," she adds. "Form follows function, but if it's not attractive, what's the point?" Complementing the shiny stainless-steel appliances, Seracuse chose solid-surface quartz countertops, a stone tile backsplash and cabinetry made of cedar, to match the siding of

the house. Overhead, meanwhile, is an adjustable, infrared, quartz heating element, made by Fostoria, to heat the kitchen — and whoever's doing the cooking on a cold winter evening. "These are more casual fixed finishes. The countertop is very high-quality, and the backsplash is reminiscent of the stone siding, though it's a little more casual that what we'd use on the interior of the home, just by the nature of this being an outdoor kitchen," she says. "We didn't want it to be too fussy; it needs to the outdoor-family-friendly space. Here, we've got hot and cold running water, ice, refrigeration. You can keep all the things you use to grill out here instead of having to take it all back into the house. There's nice shelving to keep spices or whatever, dinnerware, glassware, whatever. It's a great space year-round, and the Fergusons do use it a lot." 'Unique in this area' Ferguson says many lessons were learned along the way, the greatest one being to bring a knowledgeable designer into the process from the beginning. "Julie was meticulous in terms of detail," he says. "She's really been involved in all aspects of our lifestyle and she's incorporated all that into the design. She's been spectacular throughout the whole process." Seracuse, meanwhile, says fully functional, all-season outdoor kitchens are a sign of the times. "I'm sure there are a lot more of these out there, but this one is unique in this area. I've not seen another one that's been this functional and completes the whole space so well," she says. "I think a lot of people would like to have something 'spectacular' like this instead of just having some crummy grill out on the deck."

OUTDOOR GARDENING

LANDSCAPE DESIGN Creating a Dream Landscape by MARTY JONES • photos courtesy WILDFLOWER FARM AND COLORADO ALPINES

M

ay i s s t i l l e a r ly

in the Vail area’s gardening and landscaping season, but it’s the perfect month for planning the dream landscape you’d like to develop this summer. Whether you hope to create a new bright-blooming bed of perennial plants or a rock garden, it’s important to consider key landscape design principles while planning a project. Landscape design simply refers to the process of creating an outdoor living space that suits both practical and aesthetic needs. The fundamentals of landscape design can encompass a wide range of elements including unity, scale, balance, variety and sequence as well as those that involve line, form, texture, and color. The design principles you choose to emphasize may depend on individual tastes, goals, and landscape assets or liabilities, but an overview of a few key design elements can help you plan for an inspired summer landscaping season.

Goals, assets and liabilities Before beginning any landscaping project, take some time to consider the ultimate goal of your creation. Do you simply want to hide an unsightly electrical box? Or is there a greater sensory or aesthetic experience you’d like to capture in your outdoor living space? Identify goals by writing down all possibilities, and then narrow your list to one or two key priorities that you can realistically address this summer. When making goals, don’t forget to list your current landscape’s assets and liabilities. Assets are the components of your landscape that are already working and could be a stunning 24

series of silver-trunked aspen trees along the edge of your property or a well-built rock wall. Liabilities are any areas that pose challenges and could be geographic features such as difficult-to-plant slopes or gangly shrubs that you’ve never been able to control. Ultimately, a landscape project should seek to enhance assets already present while minimizing the effect of liabilities. Environmental considerations Once you’ve identified goals and taken stock of assets and liabilities, it’s important

to consider next the basic environmental elements such as light, soil, and water that will help you determine what you can realistically grow —and where. Take note of areas in your landscape that receive full sun, partial sun, or full shade, as it will be important to choose plants that flourish in these conditions. Survey the soil in your landscape, and determine areas that have rich soil versus areas with clay or sandy soils. Dark topsoil a foot deep is great, but if you pick around with a shovel and find that it only goes an inch into the ground, then the addition

of organic matter like compost is often needed for many plants to grow and flower well. Finally, don’t forget that anything you plant will need water to survive and thrive. Irrigation systems should be planned alongside new landscaping additions. Once you’ve considered these landscaping basics, it’s time to plan with a few key design principles in mind: Balance: Balance involves arranging items in a landscape to achieve equilibrium. Choose, for example, to arrange plants in

groups of threes or fives. While formal balance repeats the same elements in an equal pattern, informal balance can be achieved with repeated shapes, sizes, or overall textures even when a design is not replicated as a mirror image. Emphasis Emphasis involves the domination and subordination of elements in a landscape, and it can be achieved by arranging items so that some stand out from others. An anchor, or a focal point, such as a well-placed juniper snag can hold attention and create visual interest in a landscape. Achieve emphasis by adding an anchor, or arrange plants around a naturally occurring anchor to accent it. Scale Scale, sometimes referred to as proportion, refers to the size of

26

VAIL VALLEY HOME | MAY 2016

landscape elements in relation to each other. When planting a large area of a landscape or even a small garden area, consider scale in length, width, depth, and height. Begin with bigger plans such as trees and shrubs in the background and then work down to smaller plants such as perennials and annuals in the foreground. Consider the mature height of any plants, shrubs, and trees that you plant in order to maintain scale over time. Texture Plants come in a variety of textures, from coarse to fine or heavy to light. In order to appreciate plants with fine textures, such as ferns, place them in the foreground and in areas where they can be enjoyed up close. Coarser textured plants often work better in the background of a design, as the perspective keeps

large textures in balance with proportions in the wider view. Color Color is one of the most important landscape design considerations, as it is often thought to affect both mood and feeling. Plants can be grouped together in cool or warm colors to create a cohesive feel, or they can be mingled together for a more eclectic experience. The Plant Select® website, www.plantselect.org, is a great resource for learning more about bloom times, flower characteristics, and colors. Plant Select also lists plants that perform well in the mountains and, most importantly, conserve water. Of course, your local garden center is an excellent place to go for immediate advice whether you’re still in the planning stages or in the middle of summer planting season.

DOWNVALLEY Q&A

FOUR QUESTIONS WITH

Ceres+ Landscape Architecture’s Stephanie McClurg compiled by KIM FULLER

A

wa r d - w i n n i n g

landscape architecture firm, Ceres+, based out of both Eagle County and Summit County, works to create “exemplary, beautifully finished and built design that will inspire and captivate clients for years to come,” says Scott Sones, owner and principal. “At Ceres+, we embrace the natural environment and the landscape as living art, viewed as a vibrant portrait that changes with each season and over time,” says associate landscape architect and project manager, Stephanie McClurg. “As designers and artists at Ceres+, we create unique spaces and landscape scenes that connect

and unify the built environment with its natural surroundings.” The team’s experience includes Colorado’s high-alpine environment, as well as diverse climates regionally and internationally. Here’s more information about the company and landscape architecture with Vail Valley HOME Q&A: vail valley home : How does Ceres+ approach a new landscaping project? stephanie mcclurg : We consider ourselves great listeners. Every project, large or small, starts with a client’s idea or vision. Then, our team of designers is able to process the project visions

and start to build a framework of multiple design concepts to communicate back to our clients. Landscape design is not only about the functionality and forms of the spaces being created, it is also about the aesthetic appeal and the human connection to the built environment. We provide detailed planning and design based on a client’s vision, and turn it into a beautifully crafted and built reality. There is a multi-tiered process to get from the beginning to the end of a project, including identifying the vast opportunities and unique challenges of a project and its site, the financial goals and constraints, the environmental assets and impacts,

the community sensitivities and the regional uniqueness. vvh :

What are some of the best ways to landscape a mountain home? sm : We live in an amazing and unique mountain environment here in Colorado. We recognize and embrace the opportunities and challenges of landscaping in this environment with its extreme topography, the profound seasonal changes, the various microclimates that can exist on a single site, the threat of fire hazards, water conservation and the somewhat limited, albeit distinctive, plant palette available at our elevation. Ultimately, our main objective

is to make sure that the site development and landscaping associated with any project is cohesive in the context of its surrounding environment. We feel that the best way to landscape a mountain home is to provide those beautiful “aha” moments within the immediate landscape and the detail-rich, inspiring spaces as you move through an area, but then to truly let the surrounding natural mountain environment captivate, as well. We are sensitive to the water and maintenance requirements for vast amounts of perennial flowers and lawns. Therefore, we tend to focus our perennial flowering areas where they will receive the most pop and attention on a site, try to minimize the amount of proposed lawn areas for projects and strive to create transition zones back to the natural environment. vvh : What are some of the trends or methods in the landscape architecture process that Ceres+ has seen recently? sm : Regionally, our firm has seen an increase in what we refer to as “modern mountain” architecture and design. This style tends to integrate naturalistic materials like stone, wood and metals into clean, modern forms and creating a landscape mix of natural and ornamental grasses, boulders and stone terraces — blurring the lines of the natural landscape versus the built environment. Some other recent trends include the use of native and low-maintenance landscaping where applicable, green roof design, and

permeable paving options; all of which are great options when looking to reduce your environmental impact on a project site. In terms of the landscape architecture design process, there has been tremendous growth in the last five years of computer aided software programs that provide a 3D viewing of a site. Many of our architectural consultants are now using a computer program called Revit, which allows a user to “walk through” a simulated three-dimensional computer model. vvh :

What are some common challenges you run into during a landscaping blueprint or project, and how do you work with clients to overcome them? sm : One of the fascinating aspects of working in a design field, like landscape architecture, is that each project comes with its own unique set of opportunities and constraints. Of the hundreds of projects that Ceres+ and our designers have worked on regionally, it is amazing how the regulations and design guidelines vary within each community, subdivision or even at the town or county planning level. Each jurisdiction has its own distinctive process and requirements that have to be met in order to move a project from start to finish. As in many other aspects of our firm, we feel that open and coordinated communication with our clients, consultants and regulatory agencies is the key to building a successful and exemplary project that everyone is excited about.

home buyers from around the world are searching for an exclusive area to call home, whether to live full-time or just occasionally, Vail Village possesses the rarified air for which they seek. Even more rare is the distinction of owning a home that is a true ski/in-ski/out property. village, and with this extraordinary property the ski/in-ski/out location is only the beginning. This home, a true masterpiece, was designed by esteemed architect Kyle Webb, and built by equally celebrated builder George Shaeffer. David Hyde, President of Shaeffer Hyde Construction, describes the relationship that the company has with the homes they build as a “marriage.” “This company is there from start to finish; from owner to owner. They continue to address any ongoing needs the homes

might require, now or in the future, to maintain the high living standards our owners demand,” says Donna Caynoski, of Slifer Smith & Frampton, one of Vail’s top producing high-end brokers. This 10,000+ square foot home offers soaring ceilings, bold lighting and breathtaking views which add drama and glamour to the relaxed, artfully designed spaces. The flexible floor plan accommodates large or small families with ample room for intimate entertaining or social extravaganzas. Interior designer Cindy Rinfret

of Greenwich, Connecticut-based Rinfret, Ltd, collaborated with Kyle Webb on this seven bedroom, ten bathroom, slopeside retreat. Awarded Mountain Living’s 2010 Home of the Year, the stately mix of rustic luxury and mountain-modern style make it is easy to see why this home captures the imagination — and captures the heart. Fortunately this home is offered furnished so every detail and nuance is available for the new owner’s pleasure. The Vail Village luxury market is thriving as savvy buyers from all

It’s an exciting time for luxury real estate because today’s global affluent are actively and aggressively investing in real estate again. They are particularly interested in markets like Vail because they seek homes that offer a family and entertainment-friendly lifestyle. They seek a full, satisfied life and they know that an exclusive, luxury property in Vail can make all their hard work truly worth it. ” — STEPHANIE PFEFFER ANTON, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT-LUXURY PORTFOLIO INTERNATIONAL

over the globe recognize Vail as a healthy, safe, cultured and enriching community in which to raise a family, or to simply live part-time. In the past year, several homes and condominiums have sold for well over $2,000 per square foot, with at least one sale over $3,000 per square foot. The Four Seasons Private Residences are now sold out and buyers that missed out on that opportunity are still looking for a home of matchless quality and location. There are eight custom homes

currently under construction on Vail Mountain. Build costs for several of these premium homes are running from $1,500 to over $3,000 per square foot. And for the lot alone, such as the land upon which 107 Rockledge Road sits, should such a piece of land be available, it would likely have a current market value in the range of $10M to $15M. There are no such lots available on Vail Mountain, nor will there be, making 107 Rockledge Drive a very rare find indeed. “Vail Mountain cannot be

underestimated,” Caynoski says. “The entire eastern corner of Rockledge Road, with the exquisite Gore Range views as well as views to the Village below, is being enhanced to another level we have not seen before in Vail. And it cannot be emphasized enough that a slopeside location is a very finite opportunity.” With only three single-family homes available for purchase in Vail Village, 107 Rockledge Road represents the only property in likenew, move-in condition — a home that offers the modern flair that today’s buyers are seeking. This is a home built for the elite; it’s a home built for a lifetime of exceptional living. It’s rare — and it is the finest that Vail has to offer. This home will withstand the test of time — and the lows of any market. For more information and your personal showing contact Donna Caynoski.

SAILS FOR HOME Elegant, contemporary, versatile and open, shade sails provide cool cover BY S T E P H E N L LOY D WO O D

o, you're enjoying cocktails with friends and family out on the shaded deck of your home here in the Colorado High Country on a hot summer afternoon, sun blazing as thunderclouds build on the horizon. Before you know it, a sudden gust of wind blows your bar naps into the bushes and bullet-like hail plummets from the fast-darkening sky; everyone's running for cover, inside; and you're just hoping the resulting damage outside is minimal. "Properly designed shade sails can take hail and winds up to 100mph," says Alec Hill, owner of Colorado-based Alpine Shade Masters. "Try that with an umbrella or retractable awning." Hill, who worked as a construction manager for companies that developed Bachelor Gulch and other high-end, luxury resort communities here in the Vail Valley, saw a niche in a market ripe for a new and increasingly popular method for providing cooling shade for owners of decks, patios, lawns, pools and other outdoor spaces. Now based in Denver, Hill says his shade sails — which he custom designs, manufactures and installs — are the perfect solution for homeowners looking for versatile, durable, eye-appealing, cost-effective and low-maintenance ways to provide much-needed shade, and shelter, for a variety of reasons. They pay for themselves over time. "If anything, the Vail Valley has homes built very solid with robust, heavy-duty decks," he says. "I've developed systems that work very well here in the mountains."

FROM DOWN UNDER

Shade sails have their origins in sunny Australia, actually, where, decades ago, people in coastal communities began using retired sails on shore, complete with seaworthy nautical hardware, as sources of shade from the intense sun. The government's concerns about an ozone hole over the southern hemisphere increasing the odds of Australians developing skin cancer further fueled demand for ways to create shade from the sun and its harmful rays. "The Australians realized they needed different fabrics that would provide shade but also allow the hot air to percolate up through them," Hill says. Today, for Coloradans, that open, flowing, nautical, fabricbased design manifests itself architecturally in the design the Jeppesen Terminal at Denver International Airport and the new entrance to Vail's Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Beyond

44

VAIL VALLEY HOME | MAY 2016

residential decks and patios, a wide variety of other applications — swimming pools, beach facilities, picnic areas, parking spaces, parks and playgrounds, campgrounds, hotels and resorts — have evolved, too, utilizing high-tech, polyethaline mesh fabrics like Polytex, Comtex, Coolaroo, Commercial 95 and others, all in a rainbow of colors. Hot air rises, after all, and because these fabrics are porous, hot air molecules can pass upward through them, Hill explains. Those molecules are replaced by cooler ones from nearby, shady places, resulting in a living space in between that can be 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit cooler, he says, due not only from shade from the sun but from the circulation of air in the resulting microclimate; and because the fabric, depending on color, blocks out as much as 97 percent of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, being underneath them is as good as applying SPF 35 or 40 sunscreen to the skin. "That's ideal in Colorado, because of the altitude," Hill says.

PHOTOS COURTESY ALPINE SHADE MASTERS INC. AND CUSTOMSHADESAILS.COM

HERE' S TO POROS IT Y

The porosity of the above fabrics also works to keep rainwater from pooling in the middle of panels and damaging them, as water that doesn't run off with gravity can seep through and fall as a fine mist. Some fabrics aren't porous, however, though they do work well as shelter from rain as long as they are installed with a slope, so the water can drain off. Manufacturers of nonporous fabrics — commonly used for awnings and umbrellas, upholstery, drapery, marine seating and covers, etc. — only for relatively small applications involving shade sails. "The idea is not to contain water. It should follow the fabric and drain out at the lowest corner," Hill explains. "You have to ask yourself how much of the time you're going to spend underneath the shade sail — typically, that's going to be on bright sunny days, anyway." While shade sails, properly installed, can withstand high winds, heavy rain, even hail, their greatest nemesis is snow; accumulations of just a few inches can weigh many hundreds if not thousands of pounds, depending on the surface area, and can lead to damage to the home at the attachment points due to the extra weight. In regions like the High Country, where heavy snows are a common threat from autumn until spring, manufacturers recommend shade sails be taken down and stored for the winter, then put back up for the summer months. Most shade sail owners prefer to perform those duties themselves, says Hill, who nevertheless offers a maintenance program that includes seasonal visits to remove, inspect, properly store and reattach shade sails, for an additional fee. Such seasonal attention also helps make a home more energy-efficient, Hill adds, similar to using window shades to regulate interior temperatures. "Shade sails can keep sun away from the home in summer, reducing cooling costs," he

says. "But, you really don't want to keep shades up in the winter because the light is limited, anyway; you want the sun coming onto the house."

CRITICAL TEN S ION

Beyond the fabric itself, the key factor in the performance of shade sails is the high tension involved. Like sails on a sailboat, shade sails need to be extremely taut, with absolutely no wind flap, in order to perform as designed. In fact, manufactures void warrantees for their shade sails if tension is not maintained, and making sure attachment points can withstand the forces necessary — up to 600 pounds at each one for large installations, Hill says — is critical. Add to that additional, sometimes dramatic forces that can be applied to the fabric by high wind gusts, snow load or whatever and those attachment points must be anchored solidly into the frame of a structure — not just to the siding, or a deck railing, for example — or to strong steel or aluminum poles mounted on concrete footers buried deep in the ground. Bill Moore, owner of Missouri-

based Custom Shade Sails, LLC — another manufacturer of custom, as well as pre-made, shade sails — says most customers unfamiliar with them typically have no clue as to the importance of well-planned installation techniques and strong, highquality hardware. Some try to make it work, he says, with rope, decorative chain or other, weaker links connected to anchor points that can fail with the first gust of wind, possibly leading to structural damage. Simply put, a shade sail properly tensioned but attached improperly is a recipe for disaster.

HARDWARE I S KEY

"Many people underestimate the forces involved, particularly with large shade sails, and how important strong attachment points need to be. We'll get calls from people — typically, it's their first shade sails project — and they'll typically ask about the fabric. They don't typically think about the hardware. They want the best fabric possible for a large shade sail but then will order tiny, tiny hardware that's just not suitable," Moore says.

Properly designed shade sails can take hail and winds up to 100mph. Try that with an umbrella or retractable awning.” — ALEC HILL

"Or, they'll go to Lowe's or Home Depot and see hardware that looks just like ours but cheaper — and they'll call back and say something broke, or a hook straightened out in a high wind. That's actually pretty common." Not surprisingly, hardware appropriate for shade sails comes from the nautical world, such as high-quality, stainless steel turnbuckles, shackles, eyebolts and sections of aircraft cable with end loops secured by swage sleeves or wire clamps. Digging deep into the ground to mount poles strong enough to withstand the forces involved is another part of the installation process that must be taken seriously. That's why, Moore says, it's best most homeowners hire professionals to do the job. "As the manufacturer, we try not to get too involved in the actual installation work. People occasionally send photos and ask if it's suitable. We have general guidelines on our website," says Moore. "Probably, a third or so of what we do come from what an architect draws up, or contractors, or companies that build decks, and those companies typically do the install."

Many people underestimate the forces involved, particularly with large shade sails, and how important strong attachment points need to be.” — BILL MOORE

PREFAB VS. CUSTOM

46

VAIL VALLEY HOME | MAY 2016

save on cost buying pre-made shade sails, they're typically more difficult, labor-intensive — and, therefore, expensive — to install. "With premades, you have to make the attachment points fit the sail; with custom, we'll make the sails fit your attachment points," explains Moore. "It's a lot easier to do custom ones." That's one reason Hill, with ever-growing list of projects, only deals with custom orders. "With a prefabricated piece, it's like putting the roof on a house before pouring the foundation ... or buying clothes for someone without knowing their size," Hill says. "There's a total disproportionate relationship between prefabricated and

custom shade sails in terms of installation costs: Prefabs typically require more time and infrastructure, such as heavy posts, while customs can be designed to work with anchor points that exist already." Custom projects also allow Hill to control the design — often using 3D imaging software — as well as the manufacturing process, materials and hardware, and installation, assuring his customers get the very best shade sails for their particular application. "There are only two reasons I want to be called by a client," Hill says, laughing. "To invite me to come enjoy drinks under their existing shade sails; or to ask me to install more shade sails."

' VERSATILE, PRACTICAL AND SOLID'

In the end, it's all about creating a wonderful, comfortable, open and uncluttered outdoor living space that you, your family and friends can enjoy. "Shade sails are so versatile, practical and solid," says Hill. "I have one client who tells me his family, immersed in their personal electronics and laptop computers, are outside all summer long — even through November — under their shade sail. They're not cooped up inside; they're enjoying the outdoors, instead. "To me that's refreshing to hear," he adds. "That's what architects, planners and designers are always looking for."

Another major consideration for interested homeowners is whether to go with premade shade sails — which come in a variety of standard shapes, from simple triangles and right triangles to squares and rectangles, in sizes ranging from 10 feet on one side up to more than 20 feet — or to have them custom manufactured. "Over the years, we've probably sold more custom shade sails than premade ones. There's a lot more competition, more importers, with premade sails," says Moore. "We get emails all the time from foreign manufacturers, actually, asking us if we want to buy shipping containers full of premade shade sails for, like, $15 each. The quality on those is pretty bad, but a lot of people shopping online don't see that." And, even though one might

Golf for Good Vail Board of REALTORS® Hosts Annual Golf Tournament

T

h e va i l b oa r d o f

REALTORS® Foundation's annual golf tournament has gained momentum since its inception in 2013. Organizers expected this year’s event, to be held on Friday, June 17th, to be sold out by the end of April. The fourth annual tournament takes place at Eagle Ranch Golf Course, an Arnold Palmer Signature Design Course. Each year, the venue changes to showcase a variety of courses and neighborhoods. “We try to provide a worldclass golf tournament to make it a fun and exciting time. Eagle Ranch has beautiful scenery and it works really well with a scramble format. Because it’s a hard course, and by playing in a scramble format, (beginners) can still play the course and, hopefully, always swing from a good spot as if you’re a professional,” says Gary Pesso, golf tournament committee chair. “The event is open to the public, so we get a wide variety of players. We had some really good scratch golfers who teamed up with other skill levels to balance out the teams, which makes the event competitive but still fun … which is the ultimate goal.” The tournament accommodates 32 teams. The cost for a team is $800, which includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, a cart with GPS, a box lunch, a swag bag, an after-golf reception and a chance to win amazing prizes. Last year’s prizes included a Lexus/Ritz-Carlton hotel stay and a variety of valuable door and raffle prizes. The Turtle Bus, as was introduced last year for safe transportation after the reception, swill shuttle participants to and

from Eagle Ranch, stopping at Loaded Joe’s in Avon and Woody’s Bar and Grill in Edwards. Balloon Rides and Golf Ball Drop The Vail Board of REALTORS® Foundation Golf Tournament Fundraiser has previously raised as much as $20,000. This year, the nonprofit plans on raising even more with the help of Re/Max’s hot air balloon. From about 8-9:30 a.m., weather permitting, kids and adults can take a tethered ride above the golf course for just $20. It’s a fun way to float above it all and a great way to further involve families. The public can purchase numbered golf balls the morning of the event for $25 each, or five balls for $100, to compete in the balloon ball drop. Whichever ball lands in the hole — or closest to it — wins a cash prize of up to $5,000, depending upon how many balls are sold. Around 10 a.m, up to a thousand numbered golf balls will drop from the Re/ Max balloon, raining down upon one of Eagle Ranch’s holes. “It’s really quite impressive — a stream of white golf balls coming down,” Pesso says. “It’s not something you see every day.” Participants can also purchase one golf ball and a ticket to the after golf reception, normally $60, for $50 — a savings of $10. The reception includes hearty appetizers and music by guitarist John Martin on the deck. Sponsorship Opportunities Sponsorship opportunities range from $300 to $2,500. Without a team, companies can sign up for a Par sponsorship, allowing them to display their name and logo at one tee box

and receive reception tickets for two guests. An Eagle sponsorship provides business signage at the tee box and a golf team entry fee with lunch and reception tickets for $1,000. An Ace sponsorship receives all of the above, plus the privilege of placing its theme tent on a team box with booth attendees for $1,400. The ultimate, Albatross sponsorship, $2,500, includes the company’s name on all advertisements as the presenting sponsor, as well as signage throughout the course and a team entry. So, even if you’re not a golfer, there

are plenty of ways to support the foundation. Sign up now, as space is extremely limited, and the prizes are spectacular. Vail Board of REALTORS® Foundation The Vail Board of REALTORS® is a professional organization supporting Licensed REALTORS® and affiliate members throughout Eagle County. The Vail Board of REALTORS® formed the Foundation in 1996 to assist community and association members in the event of a
