YEAR-ROUND

1

F I S H O N Fly-fishing can

be a year-round activity in the mountains. Learn to fly-fish — or perfect your cast — through outfitters like Gore Creek Fly Fisherman, Nova Guides, Piney River Ranch or Sage Outdoor Adventures. Wade through the crisp water, or book a float trip to enjoy the sparkling water against a clear blue sky and snow-capped mountains. Access to some of the best fishing holes in the Gore Creek, Eagle River, Brush Creek and Colorado River can be tricky, so we highly recommend the experts who keep track of the fish on a daily basis.

B I K E Winter or summer, spring or fall, this is one sport that spans them all. Paved trails along the Eagle River provide smooth pedaling for people of all ages and abilities, while dirt trails winding down mountainsides range from beginner to advanced (with or without chairlift access — your choice). In fall, golden aspens provide a particularly stunning backdrop for riding, while winter white calls for fat biking. Many crosscountry centers, such as Vail Golf Course and Eagle Ranch Golf Course, allow these beefed-up version of mountain bikes — with their thicker tires to grip snow — and trails like Haymaker in Eagle are open to bikes year-round. Rent bikes at such shops as Venture Sports, Base Mountain Sports, Charter Sports and Vail or Beaver Creek Sports.

3

E P I C D I S C O V E RY / A D V E N T U R E R I D G E Vail Mountain has built the ultimate

play adventure area at Eagle’s Nest. During the snowy months, it’s called Adventure Ridge, and includes a snowmobile track, snow tubing and ski biking. The summer months bring Epic Discovery, which includes zip lines, alpine coaster, bungee trampolines and several ropes courses.

4

S N O W S H O E O R H I K E Explore the mountains on foot. When snow blankets the ground, take in the scenery while getting a cardio workout by snowshoeing. Rent gear at the Vail Nordic Center or the Beaver Creek Nordic Center. Explore the world with a naturalist at Walking Mountains Nature Discovery Center at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola. When the snow melts, walk around Shrine Pass, atop Vail Pass, or take the gondola at Vail or Beaver Creek mountains and see vast fields of wildflowers. The Vail Recreation District’s Nature Center also leads wildflower walks throughout the week.

5

HORSE AROUND

Horseback riding through green meadows caters to groups of nearly all ages and abilities. Beaver Creek Stables, Piney River Ranch, Sage Outdoor Adventures and Triple G Outfitters are all great options for tours. And, there’s hardly any way to make a mountain vacation more magical — romantic or family-fun wise — than by sitting under a blanket on a horsedrawn sleigh, listening to the jingle of bells. Try a sleigh ride dinner at 4 Eagle Ranch.

S N O W M O B I L E Sage Outdoor Adventures shows you exactly what powering through the high country involves with its snowmobile tours. Nova Guides is also known for its seemingly endless miles of 360-degree panoramic views with its Top of the Rockies tour, which includes views of the Continental Divide and begins in historic Camp Hale, where the 10th Mountain Army Division trained for World War II. SUMMER S TA N D U P PA D D L E B O A R D O R K AYA K If you’re ready to navigate the water

(lake or river) yourself, rent a SUP (stand up paddle board) or kayak. Beginners may want to get their sea legs on the stiller, gentler yet still lovely Nottingham Lake in Avon. And, speaking of gentle (yet tricky), locales like the Athletic Club at Westin offer SUP yoga, giving you another balancing trick (and stretch) for your bod. Once you feel comfortable kayaking or SUPing on the lake, ask your rental agency where the calmest stretch of river lies (or, in the case of kayaking, you may just want to go for the rapids; just ask first, so you know what you’re in for).

snowboarding are one form of enjoyable exercise, but to amp it up a notch, flatten out the terrain and strap on a pair of skinny skis. Crosscountry skiing consists of both classic style and skate skiing (each with its own technique and specialized equipment). Locations like the Vail Nordic Center or Beaver Creek Nordic Center will set you up with gear, and lessons, if you need, to make the most of your day gliding across a perfectly groomed surface.

8

S K AT E Ice skating at the base of Vail or Beaver Creek mountains looks, and feels, like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting — only with more snazzy village appeal, and pizza, fire pits and hot drinks to warm up the chilly afternoon or evening. Both rinks rent hockey and figure skates for a festive evening on ice. And, speaking of festive: check out Beaver Creek’s winter family festivals and skating shows — they’re not to be missed! The Beaver Creek rink is also open in the summer.

RAFTING AND TUBING

Fast and furious, or go-with-the flow: you decide. Piney River Ranch and Sage Outdoor Adventures are just two of the pros that can properly outfit and guide you along the river. Turtle Tubing is an excellent option for families and groups looking for an affordable, fun float trip.

11

O F F - R O A D By Jeep or ATV, off-

roading assures a bumpy good time that opens your senses to yet another side of the Rocky Mountains. Discover the mystery of the most recently extinct volcano in Colorado through Sage Outdoor Adventures; it gives you access to 6,000 acres of private land and 14,000 acres of public land in the Castle Peak Wilderness Study Area. Nova Guides offers yet another perspective of mountain history, this time in the form of Camp Hale, where the 10th Mountain Army Division trained for divisive battles it won in World War II. If you’ve never ridden an ATV before, it’s one for the bucket list — and a simple skill to learn. Guides will instruct you, then let you (safely) loose.

SUCCESS AWARDS Success blooms where strong ideas are planted

E

very year in early May, a ballroom at a local hotel is packed with business associates, nonprofit execs, marketers and difference makers— all hoping to win a Vail Valley Partnership (VVP) Success Award. While the competition is tight, it’s not cutthroat: the winner is congratulated and a positive vibe permeates the space. “The Annual Success Awards showcases the hard work and wonderful achievements taking place in our community,” explains Maren Cerimele, VVP’s director of membership. “Both businesses and individuals receive recognition for the positive impacts they make in our community. The event itself is a fun celebration where the three finalists in each category, and ultimately the winners, are recognized for going above and beyond. With more than 100 applications, the competition is fierce. Win or lose, all of the nominees and finalists are proud to celebrate with their peers and cheer the accomplishments of the winners.” Throughout this guide, Success Award winners offer their insider tips on the best way to enjoy the Vail Valley. Trust these tips, as they come from people who are deeply rooted in the community and want to share it.

INSIDER TIP For the traveling family, Nottingham Lake and Park is a great place to spend the day with children of all ages. Bask in the tranquility of Colorado’s mountain air on Avon’s 48 acres of open space. There is a brand new playground for the kiddos, picnic tables, grills, and even a small beach and swim area. With fishing, paddle-boating, and SUP (stand up paddleboard) on the lake, there is truly a little something for everyone. My family has enjoyed many hours here and we know you will too! FAMILY TRAVELER The Vail Valley is a wonderland for families

S U M M E R S O N VA I L & B E AV E R C R E E K M O U N TA I N S Who says the mountain is just for skiing and snowboarding? Both Vail and Beaver Creek have summer activities such as bungee trampolines and climbing walls, and Vail’s Epic Discovery is adventure HQ with an alpine coaster, tubing and more. Hiking and biking are terrific, and those who want a jump-start on elevation gain can opt to ride a chair lift up, even with a bike.

L O V E LY L I B R A R I E S You don’t have to be a local to enjoy our four libraries. The Vail Public Library offers cards to visitors. In addition to books, there’s a robotics section and 3-D printers as well. A community center, the Vail Public Library also has free concerts and a healthy living series with activities like yoga in the park. The Eagle Valley Library District has locations in Avon, Eagle and Gypsum. Free story times throughout the week cater to children with sessions in both English and Spanish.

C A M P F I R E TA L E S There are several summer camp options for kids, even if it’s for just a day. There are options for the more adventurous with zip lining and white water rafting. For the more curious minds, send young scientists for a day learning about nature and science. Visit www.visitvailvalley.com/summer/family/ for all your kid camp options. Walking Mountains Science Center has summer science camps that allow your kiddos to experience the wild places of the Vail Valley while nurturing their con22

Beaver Creek has a Five-Star Kids Camp will have you wishing you were still a kid. Campers will enjoy activities such as jeep tours, zip lining, indoor rock climbing, river rafting, and more! The schedule of activities is always changing, so you’ll be able to find the perfect adventure for your children.

INSIDER TIP A W AR D-WINNING P LAY GR OU NDS IN V AIL VAL L EY

In the Vail Valley, we love to be outside, and that’s true even for the littlest locals. Playgrounds are abundant throughout the valley and include: Pirate Ship Park in Vail, Donovan Park in Vail, Red Sandstone Park in Vail, Lionshead’s Birds Nest in Vail, Nottingham Park in Avon, Pavilion Park in EagleVail, Brush Creek Park in Eagle, and Freedom Park in Edwards. Communities that still build their own playgrounds with a design team, instead of catalog (and more generic) playgrounds, are rare. This just shows that the Vail Valley likes even their littlest visitors to get a world-class experience. A RY N S C H L I C H T I N G T O W N O F VA I L H E A LT H Y W O R K P L A C E AWA R D

Vail Recreation District’s Mad Scientists Camp allows inquisitive participants to explore topics to a depth rarely achieved with elementary-age children. The VRD has chosen different topics to help young scientists gain a better understanding of how the world works. Children will experiment, build, discuss, revise and learn. Topics include magnetism, electric motors and rockets. Cordillera Metro District’s Camp Cordy offers kids an opportunity to spread their wings and try a variety of activities like tennis, golf, swimming, basketball, hiking, fishing, games and arts and crafts lead by professional instructors. Each week has a different theme with flexibility built into the program. Campers can pick and choose the days, weeks or months that they would like to attend.

This all-natural hot spring destination is located right next to the gondola for the Adventure Park and Colorado River. Choose your preference of temperature, relax and enjoy food and beverages inside.

LOCAL TIP Bring a change of clothes and pack a swimsuit. The Children’s Fountain in Vail and the fountain in Beaver Creek offer hours of entertainment for kids.

DON’T MISS THIS ONE THING Kids Adventure Games – participate or spectate from August 8 – 12. The Kids Adventure Games offers kids, ages 6 through 14, the opportunity to experience the thrill of adventure racing. The races emphasize teamwork, problem solving, sportsmanship, environmental awareness and fun. The kids cross the finish line, muddy, sweaty, smiling and full of pride. The intent of the Kids Adventure Games is to be challenged yet have fun, be determined, develop good character, sportsmanship, teamwork, build grit and resiliency, be able to think on your feet and finish the day with a smile. What the Kids Adventure Games creates is an exceptional kids’ event with far-reaching, lifelong lessons.

Families visiting the Vail Valley should definitely learn about the incredible mountain ecology around us by going on a guided hike with Naturalists from Walking Mountains Science Center at either the campus in Avon or from the Nature Discovery Center on the top of Vail Mountain at Adventure Ridge! The kids can get the energy out as they play on one of my favorite playgrounds in Vail at Ford Park. While there, visit the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and education center. DINING & LIFESTYLE

LA TOUR

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY

In the Vail Valley, eating isn’t merely sustenance — it’s an important part of the lifestyle. From fine dining hotspots to casual comforts, it’s not hard to find great food.

GOING ALL OUT For a wonderful experience, treat yourself to one of the valley’s fine-dining mainstays. In Vail: Sweet Basil has been serving seasonal cuisine for more than 30 years. La Tour’s classical cuisine always has a twist. Flame at the Four Seasons serves exquisite steaks and seafood with easy confidence. Matsuhisa’s extensive sushi offerings come straight from celebrity chef Nobu. In Beaver Creek: Splendido at the Chateau is both refined and inventive. Grouse Mountain Grill’s menu manages to be both exciting and straightforward. Mirabelle offers Belgian fare with a light hand. WYLD at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch is a snazzy space with alpine-inspired cuisine. For a mid-mountain experience, try Beano’s Cabin, accessible by van or horse. 28

INSPIRED OPTIONS Many restaurants offer creative menus in a more casual setting. In Vail: The Fitz Bar and Lounge’s easy noshing menu makes it a fun stop before a show at the Ford Amphitheater, and don’t forget the cocktails. White Bison has one of the best decks in town, overlooking Gore Creek. And for some excellent steaks — and people watching — try Elway’s. In Beaver Creek: The Golden Eagle Inn has long been known for its warm hospitality as well as its cuisine — try to score a seat on the patio. The Met’s mid-room wine dispensers are part of a lively scene. Black Diamond Bistro offers some wonderfully executed composed entrees, but don’t be afraid to try the pizza. And Hooked has a delightful approach to seafood that puts you in the driver’s seat. In Avon, Maya’s Mexican-inspired food has big flavors. In Edwards, the Harvest deck is a lovely place to eat and drink.

in West Vail serves (gluten-free) fried and rotisserie chicken; the restaurant has now expanded to other markets. Moe’s Original BBQ in Lionshead and Eagle offers Alabama-style barbecued treats, including po’ boys. Northside Coffee and Kitchen in Avon has an amazing baked goods case — doughnuts galore — but the full menu is extensive and diverse. And Blue Moose Pizza in Beaver Creek and Lionshead is an energetic restaurant with fun pizza options and more.

CASUAL COMFORTS With three locations in the valley, Pazzo’s Pizzeria is tops, thanks to its Azteca and Corfu pizzas. Find them in Eagle, Avon and Vail Village, as well as street-side at the Vail Farmers’ Market. Yellowbelly

LOCAL NEIGHBORHOODS Though Vail has instant international recognition, the Vail Valley is more than a ski mountain. Eagle County is comprised of several small towns and National Forest. Here’s a look at a couple of our neighborhoods.

CORDILLERA Technically part of Edwards, Cordillera is a secluded-feeling oasis less than 10 minutes from downtown Edwards. Situated on more than 7,000 pristine acres, Cordillera provides residents and visitors with exceptional Rocky Mountain experiences year-round. Rising from 7,200 to 9,400 feet, Cordillera is surrounded by 1 million acres of the White River National Forest, making it a perfect summer retreat for golfing, hiking, horseback riding, private fishing, tennis, pickleball and swimming. Winter activities at Cordillera include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The Cordillera Property Owners Association and The Club at Cordillera provide social activities and events throughout the year from wine tastings, to community gatherings. All property owners have access to the Short Course at Cordillera, private fishing on the Eagle River and several stocked ponds, as well as amenities that include the Athletic Center at Cordillera, and the Trailhead Clubhouse. The Cordillera Equestrian Center and Cordillera Day Camp a.k.a. “Cordy Camp” are open to homeowners and to the public. Members of the Club at Cordillera have access to three additional courses—The Ranch, The Summit and The Valley Courses.

EAGLE About 30 minutes away from Vail — and only 5 minutes from the local airport — Eagle is an old ranching community that’s kept its historic charm while focusing on today’s Vail Valley lifestyle. With extensive bike and walking paths, it’s easy to park your car in the garage and leave it for a week, as the town is easily navigated by bike or on foot. It’s a destination for mountain bikers and trail runners, too, who love the town’s mountainous singletrack year-round. A community pool and ice rink, bike skills park, pump track and a golf course keep the population active. Shop30

ping and dining are popular, too, and the town has not one but two local breweries.

R I V E RWA L K Riverwalk at Edwards is an eminently convenient spot for shopping, dining and entertainment. With tons of free parking, both open air and covered, it’s easy to zip in and out. It’s anchored by several wonderful restaurants that run the gamut from upscale Italian to New American to bar and grill options. A movie theater, newly remodeled inn and many boutiques make Riverwalk a high-energy spot with lots of visitors. True to its name, it’s right on the banks of the river, and a small amphitheater hosts concerts and other events.

WEDDINGS & GROUPS

COLORADO WEDDINGS Adventurous wedding destinations: from Wild West to Mountain High BY TRACI J. MACNAMARA

34

v i s i t va i l va l l e y . c o m

M

ountain weddings have become increasingly popular, especially during the summer months when wildflowers are in bloom and when wedding weekends can coincide with all kinds of outdoor activity. Mountain landscapes radiate eternal beauty and solidity — fitting things to conjure for a marriage gathering, yet these four wedding locations near Vail and Beaver Creek also capitalize on the sense of adventure that’s apparent when love is in the air.

p h o t o b y d ay l e n e w i l s o n

PINEY LAKE

Piney River Ranch is equipped with an in-house caterer and an indoor event space full of mountain flair that can accommodate up to 200 wedding guests. Adventurers of all ages can entertain themselves while canoeing, paddle boarding, fishing or hiking on site. With so many opportunities to explore, guests might not want to leave. And that’s okay, too: Overnight accommodations at Piney River Ranch range from rustic to slightly refined, with lakefront cabins, a yurt and glamping tents where wedding guests can stay and extend their revelry into the star-studded night.

4 EAGLE RANCH

PINEY RIVER RANCH Nestled into the Gore Range 12 miles north of Vail, Piney River Ranch is the kind of place where outdoors lovers dream of saying “I do.” The adventure of a Piney wedding begins from the get-go as guests travel several miles over a countymaintained dirt road that winds through mature aspen stands and opens up to scenic mountain views at Piney Lake, a wedding setting like no other. At this 40-acre private ranch, spiky mountain peaks jut upward into the Colorado sky, and moose are often seen ambling about in the distance on the fringes of the lake. Dwarfed in the expanse of such awe-inspiring beauty is a wedding ceremony deck perched on the water’s edge. Couples gather here along with their guests to exchange vows in this place where the mountain backdrop exudes a timeless appeal.

photo by greener visuals wedding photography

If an authentic Colorado wedding is in order, then 4 Eagle Ranch is the place. This ranch that was originally homesteaded in the 1800s is only 25 minutes away from Vail, but a step onto the property sweeps guests a step back in time. And with Sawatch Range peaks rippling along the horizon, weddings at 4 Eagle Ranch are a naturally popular choice. The ranch’s newly remodeled historic Nelson Cabin and Carriage House facilities radiate Western charm while bringing guests into a cozy, romantic setting for an intimate wedding gathering or for a wedding party of more than 500 guests. Original homesteader cabins remain on the property, offering a glimpse into Colorado’s past, and newlyweds can opt to take a horse-drawn wagon ride away from the ceremony along the old stagecoach trail. While 4 Eagle Ranch is an exciting place for a wedding ceremony and reception in itself, an array of activities and accommodations complete the 4 Eagle wedding experience. Many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors are onsite or nearby: horseback riding, zip lining, wine tasting, fly fishing, Razor tours, paintball and more. For those who want to stay overnight — and perhaps wake in the dark to hear coyotes calling — 4 Eagle’s Homestead House is available for rental, along with several unique cabins and luxuriously outfitted glamping tents.

ALLIE’S CABIN

In addition to a beautiful outdoor wedding deck, Beaver Creek offers several luxurious cabins and mountain-side venues. Beano’s Cabin, accessible by shuttle van, tractor-pulled wagon, or horseback in the summer season, commands a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains. The lush lawns and wrap-around deck are a beautiful setting for excellent cuisine. Tucked into the aspen grove not far from the mountain base, Allie’s Cabin is another option on Beaver Creek Mountain. The rustic décor is both solid and comfortable, while the views are expansive. Talons Restaurant is the newest on-mountain venue. Inspired by the Austrian roots behind alpine ski culture, the restaurant’s architecture is reminiscent of the early barns that were built in Beaver Creek. An enormous deck allows for large parties. Between its ballrooms, restaurants and lawns, The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch has many slope-side party venues. But for a supremely intimate adventure, Anderson’s Cabin, operated by the hotel, is only a short distance away. All of The Ritz-Carlton’s options benefit from the top-notch culinary crew.

M AGICAL MOUNTAIN VIEWS IN A SPECTACULAR VENUE

Featuring a spacious banquet room, stunning Gore Range mountain views and a scenic outdoor Wedding Island. Now available for weddings and rehearsal dinners year-round!

The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch knows how to treat guests. From the initial entry into the porte-cochere, pampered living is on the docket. The expansive outdoor patio, with firepit, hot tubs and pool nearby, is set at the base of Bachelor Gulch, perfect to watch skiers in the winter or daydream in the summer. The options for revelry on site provide a range of fun: settle in to the Great Room, cozy up to the bar in WYLD or have a stogie in the valley’s only cigar lounge, Bachelors Lounge, while others luxuriate in the world-class spa.

DO UB L E TR EE B Y HI LTO N DoubleTree by Hilton has an urban feel in a mountain modern way. Located just a mile or so from Vail Mountain in West Vail, the Hilton is an easy oasis with two restaurants on site as well as a bar. The hotel provides a courtesy shuttle and on-site rental gear, making it easy to explore the mountains and trails without having to haul gear. The party space can easily hold up to 100 guests, for the right-sized event or gathering. FO UR S E A SO N S R ESO RT V AI L

Located right in Vail, the Four Seasons Resort provides exemplary service with a host of accoutrements. The rooms are mountain elegant and spacious but guests will probably want to be out exploring, taking advantage of the resort’s “recreational concierge,” an outdoor enthusiast that knows the mountain and loves sharing the active lifestyle. For those who are more prone to facials than fitness, the Four Season’s spa is reason enough to stay: rated a Forbes Five-Star spa, leaving may be the toughest part of the trip. The Remedy, one of Vail’s swankier bars, beckons with its floor-to-ceiling windows, cocktails that will cure whatever ails you and lively music throughout the week. photo by logan robertson

EAGLE COUNTY SINGLETRACK

HEALTH & WELLNESS

HEALTH & WELLNESS

E

agle County has some of the highest life expectancy of any county in the U.S. — 85.9 years. Part of that is the quality of health care we have available to us, but it’s also because health and fitness are part of our everyday lifestyle. Here are some of the local options for staying healthy and fit.

HIKING, BIKING & MORE Tackle a fourteener or find your new favorite trail courtesy of the enthusiastic experts at the Beaver Creek Hiking Center. Or forge ahead on your own on both ski mountains and the surrounding hills. Spin on miles of well-maintained bike trails throughout Eagle County: start at the top of Vail Pass and cruise right on down through Vail, EagleVail and Avon. Head west for Eagle’s exceptional trails. All told, there are hundreds of miles of rolling singletrack for mountain bike enthusiasts. And there are plenty of other outdoor activities, such as disc golf, to keep you outside.

Green Elephant Juicery has multiple locations throughout the valley. The plant-based operation made a name with its creative juices, but has great breakfasts and lunches, too. Terra Bistro started using sprouted grains and organic ingredients long before it was trendy. But nothing compares to making your own. Drop into any of the local farmers’ markets: Sunday’s Vail Farmers’ Market, Saturday’s Minturn Market and Edwards’ Farmers’ Market and the debut of Gypsum Farmers Market on Friday nights.

S PA S & AT H L E T I C C L U B S There’s no shame in heading inside for a little workout or recovery. Excellent fitness facilities can be found at the Vail Racquet Club, Avon Recreation Center, Minturn Fitness Center and Gypsum Recreation Center. Local hotels have excellent fitness areas in addition to spas. any nonprofit organizations work to better the quality of life for residents and visitors in a variety of ways. Whether it’s focusing on the cultural arts or improving educational services, there are many dedicated volunteers who put their time where there hearts are. For an extensive list of local non-profits, see the directory on adjacent page.

H E A LT H Starting Hearts wants to make Eagle County the safest place in the world to experience sudden cardiac arrest. Response time is everything — even 10 minutes can be too long — so Starting Hearts is creating an entire community of first responders. They have a multi-pronged approach. First, they’re placing AEDs in all trafficked areas in the county. Second, they have a smartphone app, Pulsepoint, that sounds an alarm when someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest in a public space within a certain radius of the phone. It provides the location so assistance can rush to help. And third, they have an ambitious education model that rolls out classes for all ages in a variety of situations, including schools and workplaces. startinghearts.org

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Enjoying the great outdoors is an integral part of living in the Vail Valley. The Cycle Effect operates within this spirit, working to empower young women in Eagle and Summit Counties through mountain bike training and racing. By helping them achieve goals they didn’t think possible, these young women develop grit, determination and self confidence. Not only does that mean a brighter future for them, but a stronger community through the service and volunteerism that is a tenet of the organization. Each participant receives more than 80 days per year of highly personalized programming with coaches, role models and volunteers, which includes help finding funding to attend college. thecycleeffect.com
