My name is Carly Frey and I am a senior interior design student at Florida State University. My passion for design flourished when I discovered that the world around me had the ability to ignite such a deep sense of creativity. My inspiration draws from the challenge that comes with each project as design is changing every day. I aspire to merge the past into our vastly evolving modern world by keeping to the classics and having a deep respect for tradition.

PROJECT SCOPE

This charrette-style project focuses on envisioning new purposes for the former 42,682 sf Toys-R-Us in Tallahassee with the goal of improving the lives and livelihoods of the surrounding community through adaptive reuse.

SOFTWARES USED

REVIT PHOTOSHOP INDESIGN LUMION 6

COMPASS find your direction

PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION DAY-PROGRAMS AND SESSIONS

PROBLEM

1 in four people worldwide are affected by a mental disorder. The Toys R Us on 1625 Apalachee Pkwy will be redesigned and used for an alternate purpose. Taking the place of Toys R Us will be COMPASS - Psychiatric Rehabilitation Day-Programs and Sessions. Progressive mental health treatments are increasing but not yet available in Tallahassee. COMPASS will act in accordance with the demographic of Tallahassee, as well as positively impact the city’s people. COMPASS will embrace the already existing shell of the building, while complying to codes, as well as expressing the company’s morals and values through design.

SOLUTION

The design for COMPASS’ office on Apalachee Parkway utilizes the already existing shell of the old Toys R Us. COMPASS will give back ot the community as a whole by providing progressive mental health care treatments to patients, as well as provide jobs to locals. The design expresses comfort – a major value the company’s culture believes is pertinent when treating their patients. Elements to express this value are seen though the use of warm and natural materials, as well as incorporation of biophilia. Optimism will be evident with large curtain walls that span two stories, as well as the use of natural lighting. Functionality of spaces, as well as choices given to patients and providers, allows for the overall sense of ease and relaxation. The overall design will emit comfort among patients and providers in a space where healing and trust coincide.

CONCEPT

Mental health is a difficult topic. It is also a very overlooked health concern that many people live with day-to-day. The over 450 million people affected by mental health all have one thing in common – discomfort. To combat this, COMPASS’ main goal will be the emphasis of tranquility. Balance will be evident through the use of natural materials and their textures. The environment will feature scales of different proportions. All forms and linear elements will consist of strict lines and flat surfaces to contrast the organic characteristics evident in natural materials. The notion of discomfort can be combatted with providing choices like different settings and lighting. Colors will coincide with the natural materials that express warmth to further set the tone for COMPASS’ patients and providers.

EXTERIOR

The exterior of COMPASS allows for ample natural light to flow through the front facade of the building, while still allowing privacy in all other spaces. The dark-grey polished concrete linear forms stretching vertically around the entire facade grounds the building and carries viewers eyes upward.

RECEPTION

Upon entering the reception area, patients and visitors are immediatly greeted with a catwalk above the seating areas. The room emits an overall sense of serenity evident in the calming sounds from the waterfall walls behind the reception counters, as well as natural, light and biophilia elements coming in from the atrium. The seating areas are grounded and inset with carpeting, as well as reception counters are grounded by the towering waterfall walls. The use of natural materials and tones plays in tune to assist in the comfort of both patients, visitors and staff.

11

ATRIUM

The atrium is centrally located and assists in greeting patients and visitors upon entering the building. This space generates positivity and optimism amongst those who sit in the space. The large skylights penetrating the atrium ground this area in the core of the building allowing light to wonder to other spaces. The lounge seating from the reception area carries into the atrium giving patients and visitors another place to sit if they are waiting for an appointment, or lounge for patients during the day-programs offered at COMPASS.

CAFE

COMPASS Cafe serves as an informal or formal seating area centrally located in the building next to the atrium. At the cafe, patients, visitors and staff can purchase food and beverages whether they are participating in day-programs or a session.

12

MULTIPURPOSE ROOMS

The two multipurpose rooms at COMPASS allow for maximum functionality dependant on differnet classes and seminars being offered. The large storage spaces off each room (see floorplan) allow for storage of chairs, desks, laptops, etc. when not in use. The use of wood brings a warm and inviting feel to the room providing comfort to patients, as well as draws attention to the front board with its linearity.

13

CAFE SEATING & MULITMEDIA LOUNGE

The Multimedia Lounge is an extension of the cafe seating area. This area provides another informal seating option when eating or meeting with a thereapist, p.c.t., psychiatrist or psychologist. This space also provides multimedia accessories like built in television screen, charging station, and learning zone with headphone adaptability.

PROJECT SCOPE

Design a workplace for Shulman+Associates design firm in Miami, FL on the top two floors of a building in Brickell with an intervening stair in a < 7,000 sf space.

SOFTWARES USED

REVIT PHOTOSHOP INDESIGN LUMION 16

SHULMAN + ASSOCIATES CONCEPT Miami’s streets are overflowing with various, vibrant pieces of art. There is an overwhelming emphasis on wall murals which contrasts the blank slate of Wynwood surrounding them. The movement that is expressed both in the colors that flow in the artwork amidst the sound of the waves to the east create a sense of harmony. The proportion of the space will generate optimism and positivity in the users. The modern design will be contrasted with curvilinear and straight lines, along with the use of textures. The space will be monotone and neutral, with an overlay of various bright colors to accentuate its uniqueness. Site specific design will be the driving force behind Shulman + Associates’ Brickell, Miami office, which will influence coworkers to collaborate and continue to pride themselves throughout their own design process as they continue to paint Miami’s canvas.

SOLUTION The design for Shulman + Associates’ Brickell office suits the functionally and needs of all workers and clients. The design expresses the companies’ culture of location-based design and contemporary nature. Collaboration amongst employees is evident as workers of different areas are spread amongst one another. By creating more open spaces rather than designated rooms, it will encourage employees of different areas to come together and work as a team. The gallery display wall allows for company growth as the firm can display newer projects as they are completed. The acoustic wall panels serve to help with the sound in the room, as well as a large pin-up space where employees can show their work and ideas, and easily get opinions from others. The overall design allows for positivity and optimism seen in the tall ceilings, access to views, and integration of artwork.

GOALS - Design functionally to suit the needs of all employees - Design to express the company’s culture - Design for collaboration between employees in different departments - Design using site-specific attributes - Design to allow for company growth - Design to promote positivity in the workplace - Design for palette and posture, and to promote choice

PROJECT SCOPE

Design for a 3,600 sf out-patient facility addressing the healcare needs of local families in Tallahassee, FL.

SOFTWARES USED

REVIT PHOTOSHOP INDESIGN LUMION 30

SHAPING HUMAN WELLNESS Southwood office for Tallahassee Memorial Health CONCEPT Going to the doctor is an unavoidable responsibility to leading a happier and healthier life. This is easier said than done, as the stigma associated with these visits is often marked by unease and fear. To mitigate these negative associations, the goal for the Southwood office for Tallahassee Memorial Health is to create positive distractions within a warm and inviting environment, while also paying close attention to cleanliness and functionality of the space. Distractions will act as a diversion in the space for patient’s ailments but blend in harmoniously with the space. Another driving factor will be the use of straight lines. The use of these straight lines within the space reinforce functionality as well as assist in wayfinding.

DESIGN STATEMENT The design for the Southwood office for Tallahassee Memorial Health addresses the patients’ need for comfort as well as overall sterility. The design emits a homey feel and lively atmosphere through the use of natural, muted tones and elongated, strict lines which assist in wayfinding. Cleanliness is evident through the use of white surfaces and natural materials. Together these elements foster an atmosphere for healing and wellbeing for patients, providers and caregivers.

GOALS - Create an overall sense of acceptance and comfort in visitors - Use lines to assist in wayfinding - Emphasize cleanliness through the use of color and appropriate material selections - Incorporate elements to bring the space alive and generate positivity

The break area is open and spacious to encourage interaction and conversation between coworkers. Through the use of different seating options and areas for seating, a homey feel is achieved. The use of mauve tones signifies this space as a provider zone.

NURSE STATION

Centrally located to all exam rooms, the nurses’ station has immediate access to all patient areas. Keeping the nurse station open and in sightlines of the waiting area brings the space alive, enhances work flow and makes tasks easier. This will also be achieved through the use of elongated linear lights which assist in wayfinding around the nurse station. The use of color assists in distinguishing zones for patient areas in green and provider area in mauve.
