From Front page - Fireside Furniture & Appliances

By Mary Moffat While Carlie Pasichnuk is new to the furniture business, she has always had an interest in decorating. Already a busy mom with a 2-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son, Carlie’s goal is to help people create a comfortable home that speaks to who they are and brings joy whenever they enter the room.

From the beautiful natural gas fireplace, handcrafted in stone by 5th Street Construction, to the comfy couches and love seats, each piece reflects the minimalist that is Carlie. She believes that once you find a good piece that speaks to you, it helps you to create your very own style.

With many different collections to choose from, the store still has an open, calm feel to it, with dining room tables down the center aisle and two beautiful raised platforms that will feature some of her favourite pieces.

Opening in Carlyle makes sense, Pasichnuk says, given the large area to draw customers from.

Partnering with Ashley Furniture and Whirlpool for appliances (coming in April), she plans to keep prices competitive with the larger centers, in order to encourage shoppers to support our community. Delivery will be available and Carlie is open to making house calls in order to assist you in styling your home.

Negative ads just need to be truthful

By Murray Mandryk This week, the Saskatchewan government embarks on what is its most positive advertisement, it’s annual budget.

Budget are filled with thinly veiled propaganda where the government of the day, regardless of political stripe, promotes its spending your tax dollars for your benefit.

Actually, that’s a bit of a harsh assessment.

We do, after all, select government by virtue of not only how various parties choose to spend our tax dollars but also how many of our tax dollars they choose to collect.

And while it might seems government and its seemingly limitless ability to hire communication and spend our tax dollars on questionable self-promotion, it’s just as easy for an Opposition to zero in on a budget item has the public or even a special interest group rather riled.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, either because scrutiny is oppositions should be doing.

Really, it’s how politics works: You promote yourself with a positive message; you criticize your opponent by dwelling on the negatives in either their policies or promises.

And about on only expectation is that everyone is relatively truthful about it … although what’s true and what’s not is often in the eyes of the beholder.

So it’s a little dangerous for opposition politicians, or any politicians, to start griping about governments portraying them in a negative way through advertisements or otherwise.

Recently, NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili has been rather vocal that a Sask. Party TV about him is negative American-style politics.

Well, let’s quickly examine the ad to see what’s inaccurate and what’s fair and reasonable criticism.

We should likely start by noting it seems a bit petty for the Sask. Party to use a grainy black and white image of Meili skateboarding. He does, so it’s accurate. But why is it relevant to anyone?

On the more substantive issues, Meili did say Saskatchewan should “consider a modest carbon tax”. While he does not specifically supported the current federal carbon tax that will be $50 a tonne by 2022, what he’s said doesn’t exactly contradict federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna’s plan.

Moreover, he did call the Sask. Party’s Constitutional challenge against the carbon tax “a pointless crusade.”

It’s also true he spoke at an anti-pipeline rally with signs saying: “keep it the ground.” However, it should be noted the rally was to protest the Husky oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River, which many communities rightly complained about at the time. And Meili’s speech did not oppose pipelines.

Yes, there was there was a radical element there. but that doesn’t necessarily mean Meili shares their views. That said, Meili has complained about Premier Scott Moe allowing his ministers to attend yellow vest rallies that have also had radicals in their crowds spouting extreme views.

But where Meili seems to right about the Sask.

Party ad being misleading is the line that states: “When it was time to fight Trudeau’s equalization plan that hurts provinces like Saskatchewan, he didn’t say anything at all.”

About the only thing Meili has ever said on the equalization fight is completely true, that the Sask.

Party government could have helped changed equalization a decade ago, but refused to for seemingly partisan political reasons.

Former premier Brad Wall cancelled a legal challenge against former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper for reneging on his 2006 election promise to remove natural resources from the equalization formula. This promise would have meant an extra $800 million a year for Saskatchewan and was supported by both the NDP and Sask.

Party.

Instead, the Sask. Party is now proposing distributing half the equalization money on a per capita basis, a policy that most benefits Quebec and Ontario and hurts small “have-not” Atlantic provinces.

Do I know you? What’s your name?

It’s an exciting moment when parents announce the arrival of a baby. The first piece of information offered is typically the gender, followed by health status for mom and baby, and then, if it has been chosen, the baby’s name.

Saskatchewan Health released a list of most popular baby names for 2018. Topping the list for girls in this province is Olivia and for boys, Liam. Some names Shelley Luedtke made their debut on the list including Ellie, Ivy, Ryker, Emmett and Elijah.

There’s something daunting about naming a child, but can your name affect your life? This has been an area of research for decades and while there are variances, some findings appear consistent.

Names that are easy to pronounce correlate with likability and the chance of being hired. Using a middle name or initial results in perceptions that the person is more intelligent and successful.

A 2009 study, hotly debated, traced a relationship between a child’s first name and juvenile criminal behavior. While researchers didn’t state the name led to the behavior, they documented a link wondering if unpopular names may be treated differently by peers making it more difficult to form relationships.

What about our last name? Research involving 90,000 European students found that when presenting similar test scores, those with last names closer to the top of the alphabet were more likely to be admitted. A separate study claims that those with last names closer to the end of the alphabet are more likely to be impulse spenders. It is suggested that being at the end of the alphabet through years of school may make someone want to jump at opportunities before they miss their chance.

There might be real advantages to having an uncommon name though. The reality that people share a name has resulted in harsh consequences like erroneously being placed on no-fly lists, having government benefits cancelled, or being the target of unsolicited attention. Some analysts believe this

is impacting name selection because some parents want to ensure they give their child a unique Google legacy.

Of course the name we are given at birth isn’t necessarily the one we carry through life. Peter Hernandez changed his to Bruno Mars, Demetria Guynes became Demi Moore and Mark Sinclair Vincent is Vin Diesel. Does it make a difference?

Would Dana Owens have been as successful if she hadn’t changed her name to Queen Latifah? Would the same roles have been offered to Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra as they were to Meg Ryan? Do we perceive an artist, or their abilities, differently based on a name? I hope talent, ingenuity and work ethic surpass any influence of a name but the list of those who made changes is long so they must feel their acceptance in the industry would be impacted.

We may not be able to prevent the assumptions others make based on our names, but we do have the capacity and influence to help determine whose names get elevated to fame and notoriety, and those who don’t. It often comes down to what we buy, what we watch and who we talk about, and it should make us question why some become household names while others, who may have a much greater impact on us, remain rather anonymous.

I regret I know the names of mass shooters, celebrities who won’t put a sentence together without cursing, or personalities who have made a fortune from bad behavior, yet not the ones driving food trucks in famine-ravaged countries, or the scientists studying dementia, or the officers protecting our towns and cities. Then again, the people who do these things typically aren’t looking for recognition in the first place. It’s about serving their community, contributing to something bigger or doing what they can to better the life of others. They are less concerned about making a name for themselves than making gains on behalf of someone else.

Perhaps we can’t control what might be said about our name but we certainly play a role in who will become the big names of tomorrow. As we do, let’s ensure we are also recognizing those who are making a name in a way that makes a difference.

RCMP report Submitted

by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons It is Fraud Awareness Month. The RCMP is not coming to get you - well, maybe we are, but not because you have not done your taxes. It is tax season and the Canada Revenue Agency Fraud is out and about again. If you get a call from someone you don’t trust, don’t trust them. Call 1-888-4958501 and talk to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if you think you are dealing with a Fraud.

In this case they meant to call 411. We also had our weekly dose of false alarms.

A teenager and their parent got in an altercation. The parent was apparently the victim but did not want charges. Alcohol was involved. Unfortunately we returned the following day and alcohol and drugs may have been the cause for this return visit. Some parenting advice was provided by the Members.

Another teenager locked themselves in a parents room and the Police were called. More parenting advice was

provided. I know if our child locked us out of our room, where their stuff is not, such as video games, TV and other objects of interest and fun, well certain things would disappear.

This week we had four intoxicated individuals lodged until sober, three from the same incident.

We know an assault took place, but nobody wants to co-operate with the Police.

If you split from your spouse, be it someone you were married to or common law, and you go to collect your things and you need the Police to keep the two of you from committing a Criminal Offence, call us, we will come. This week the one took the high road and just left.

We have a youth that threatened other youth and they are now facing Criminal Charges. Some people say things they regret, that is where it often stops, other times they just keep opening their mouth and after a while the Police get involved.

We have had several signs spray painted. Unfortunately the vandals are not good artists, not even good abstract artists.

I was taught that if you lend a book you should not expect to get it back. This ironically carries over to trailers, vehicles, and many other objects. It is not stolen, thus it is hard for us to do anything, especially if it happened days, weeks, or months ago. How important is the property if you did not want it back for an extended period of time? Personally, I would want it back right away.

We have an individual who refuses to accept that they have a warrant. They will not answer the door when we come to visit which is kind of rude, don’t you think? We want this individual brought to court and are trying to arrest this individual the day of Court so they can deal with their warrant, being we really don’t want individuals in custody longer than necessary. We will persevere and this individual will have to accept the following facts; This is Canada. We have laws.

Everyone has to comply with these laws. It does not matter if you don’t believe you have to comply with these laws.

and wrote a ticket, warning notice, or inspection ticket during our travels.

An individual was observed failing to stop at a stop sign. This resulted in a 72 hr suspension as well as a stop sign ticket.

One individual was stopped speeding because they had to get to Court and they were in a rush. The Member was not in a rush, but did issue the ticket as expeditiously as possible.

Tickets were issued for Fail to stop at a stop sign -$230, no insurance - $580, drive without a licence - $150, fail to produce registration certificate - $100, hold or manipulate a cell phone - $280, fail to produce registration - $100 and the most expensive tickets were for $292 and $538.

Warnings were issued for stop signs, driving carelessly, operating an unregistered trailer, passenger fail to wear a seatbelt, failure to properly secure licence plate, obstructed licence plate, inadequate speedometer, and fail to produce drivers licence.

Inspection notices were issued for windshield, repair or replace bumper, window tint, head lights and fail to produce a valid drivers licence.

We attended to a complaint of an intoxicated individual knocking on a door wanting to get in. The subject must have become wise, for they left before the arrival of the RCMP. Members responded to an erratic driver in a community on a snowmobile. Patrols were made. You would think this would be the last time we respond to such a complaint until next year being the snow is melting so quickly but I know from experience.

You don’t need snow to drive a snowmobile. I saw one driving on the July long weekend once.

“Who let the dogs out??? “Who?, Who?” We are still getting complaints of loose dogs.

The fog is back, and so are collisions and near collisions caused by those driving too fast in the fog or not paying adequate attention. We had one collision where fog was a contributing factor and three vehicles that hit the ditch because of icy roads.

We had two calls of individuals on the Highway where there was safety concerns. Patrols were made but we did not locate either individual. That said, I guarantee we found someone doing something wrong

On March 13, the grade 11 & 12 classes from Gordon F. Kells High School in Carlyle travelled to Winnipeg to tour the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Manitoba Museum. At the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, students toured the galleries: What Are Human Rights? Indigenous Perspectives, Canadian Journeys, Protecting Rights in Canada, Examining the Holocaust, Turning Points for Humanity, Breaking the Silence, Actions Count, Rights Today, and Inspiring Change. At the Manitoba Museum, students toured the galleries: Orientation Gallery, Earth History Gallery, Arctic / Sub-Arctic Gallery, Boreal Forest Gallery, Nonsuch Gallery, HBC Gallery, Parklands Gallery, Grasslands Gallery, Urban Gallery, The Franklin Exploration Exhibit, and The Fossil Favorites from Across Canada. It was an extremely early morning, but most everyone was able to rise for the occasion. Students found both museums very informative which complements their Social Studies 20 & 30 courses (Human Rights and Canadian Studies). Students would like to thank the community of Carlyle (community calendar) and the Carlyle Lions Club for supporting this out-of-the-classroom learning experience!

Kisbey darts players win provincial title Submitted by Estevan Mercury Several members of the Moose Mountain Elks Lodge in Kisbey were in Esterhazy from March 8-10 for the provincial Elks darts tournament.

In the men’s singles event, John Voutour of Kisbey took second spot, and Kalvin Nankevill was fourth. A total of five people were entered in the men’s division. Craig Nielsen of Esterhazy finished first.

In the women’s singles, Kathy Nankevill of Kisbey finished fourth.

Prince Albert was the champion.

Voutour and Kindersley’s Barry Off teamed up to finish first in the men’s doubles event.

Nankevill and Brenda Montour were third in the division.

Kathy Nankevill and Demerais teamed up to finish first in the women’s doubles competition.

The mixed triples winners were Off, Demerais and Eugene Hartter from Wilkie.

Voutour, Kathy Nankivell and Calinda Nielsen of Esterhazy were second, and Kal-

vin Nankivell, Charlotte Hartter and Nielsen were third.

Blind draw doubles were held March 8. Anyone could draw another player as a partner, creating a fun event for the entrants. Various competitions were held March 9 and 10.

All players qualified to compete at the Elks National Darts Tournament in Courtenay, B.C., from May 21-25.

The Elks are the oldest, largest all-Canadian fraternal charitable organization in Canada. In Saskatchewan there are 56 lodges and over 1,200 members.

Donna Fraser spent a couple of weeks in March at Okotoks, AB where she had quality time getting acquainted with her new grandson, Jasper Lloyd Tiffin who arrived safe and sound on Feb. 25. Jasper is the son of Cora King and Dallas Tiffin. Congratulations to all.

Marcelle Peterson and Reg Needham (Oxbow) visited with Glennis Peterson in Weyburn on Mar. 9 and they helped Glennis to celebrate her 80th Birthday.

On Mar. 15 Edgar and Shirley Bendtsen travelled to Ogama where they spent some time visiting with Shirley’s dad, Reg and Ruth Taylor and also with her brothers Gary and Jim. On their way home after having supper they stopped in Weyburn where they visited with son Todd, Laurie Ann and granddaughter Ciera.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Friday and Saturday (March 15,

16) evening in Weyburn where Ainsley competed in a dance competition with her dance group.

The girls placed 3rd on Friday and 2nd on Saturday in their dance – Great job girls – Congratulations everyone – keep up the good work.

Another good crowd attended the “Breakfast at the Rink” in Alida on Sunday, Mar. 17 – where they celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by serving up green pancakes – mmmm Good. Kitchen group #3 served up a total of 54 breakfasts – you tied the Breakfast Challenge total – great job guys and gals. It is always good to see all the familiar faces coming back for breakfast every week. Next week it will be Kitchen group #4 at the helm. Remember ONLY ONE breakfast left – see you at the rink.

The final game for the women is on Mar. 24 and then on Mar. 30 the Men’s World Championship Curling begins in Lethbridge – Go Canada go.

Crescent Point takes $2.7 billion charge for 2018 Submitted by Estevan Mercury Crescent Point Energy Corp. had a net loss of $2.62 billion in 2018 and took a $2.7 billion charge.

It is continuing on its path to downsize while it reins in its debt. That focus on the bottom line means it won’t be increasing its capital expenditures as funds become available, and that it is coming close to deadlines on its sale of 21,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in southeast Saskatchewan.

Those are some of the key points of the company’s 2018 year-end report, as presented in a conference call from Calgary on Mar. 5.

The company has over $400 million of excess cash flow expected to be available in 2019 for net debt repayment and additional share repurchases.

Craig Bryksa, president and CEO, said 70 to 80 per cent of that will be used for debt reduction as a “pillar strategy.”

This number based on current strip prices, and excludes proceeds from any additional dispositions.

The company cited strong capital discipline with 2018 capital expenditures $38 million under budget and annual production ahead of guidance.

Crescent Point executed over $355 million of dispositions in 2018, with an associated volume of 7,000 boepd of production.

They reported replacement of 142 per cent of 2018 production through organic reserves growth.

Crescent Point commenced a normal course issuer bid (NCIB) on Jan. 25, with approximately 1.3 million shares repurchased to date at an average cost of $3.89 per share.

“In 2018, we spent below budget, exceeded our production guidance and increased our net asset value per share,” said Bryksa. “In mid-2018, new management began transitioning the company to be more focused and efficient, realizing cost structure improvements and prioritizing capital allocation based on returns while continuing to advance our core areas.

“In addition to these changes and those set out in our transition plan, we also welcome and look forward to the additional insight and expertise provided through our ongoing board renewal process.”

For the year ended Dec. 31, 2018, Crescent Point’s capital expenditures on drilling and development, facilities and seismic totaled $1.737 billion, which was below its annual guidance of $1.775 billion. Capital expenditures totaled $302.3 million in the fourth quarter, including $278.4 million spent on drilling and development to drill 172 (139.6 net) wells.

For the year ended 2018, the company incurred a net loss of $2.62 billion, including a non-cash impairment of $3.71 billion ($2.73 billion after-tax).

Post-impairment, Crescent Point said its balance sheet reflects a better approximation of the fair value of its asset base in the current environment and incorporates a higher cost of capital.

The charge was not related to underlying asset performance and does not impact the company’s adjusted funds flow or the amount of credit available under its bank credit facilities.

Crescent Point’s fourth quarter oil differential widened to $23.34/barrels of oil (bbl) from $10.74/ bbl in the third quarter. This compared positively to the fourth quarter Edmonton Par differential of

$34.88/bbl. Based on realized prices to date and the forward curve, the company’s first quarter 2019 oil differential is expected to narrow to approximately $8.75/bbl.

This is expected to improve its realized oil price by approximately 15 percent relative to fourth quarter 2018. Crescent Point remains unaffected by the Alberta Government’s production curtailments given the smaller size of its operations in the province.

During periods of increased market access constraint in Canada, the company expects that its oil production will continue receiving a premium due to a significant portion of its assets located either downstream of recent apportionment points or in the United States.

Crescent Point is also exploring solutions to further enhance realized pricing for its Canadian oil production.

Subsequent to fourth quarter 2018, the company resolved a National Energy Board complaint with Tundra Energy Marketing Ltd. and legal action through the negotiation and execution of a settlement agreement. The agreement includes a cash settlement payable to Crescent Point in addition to a revised pipeline tariff that is expected to increase the company’s netback for oil production transported on the Saskatchewan pipeline system.

Crescent Point’s annual average production in 2018 was 178,166 boepd, exceeding Crescent Point’s guidance of 177,000 boepd. As previously announced, the company sold approximately 7,000 boepd during 2018 for proceeds of approximately $355 million.

Crescent Point continues to advance its key focus areas. In Viewfield, the company’s waterflood program has allowed for a base decline rate of approximately 25 percent in 2019. This decline rate is below the corporate average and helps drive free cash flow generation in the play. In Flat Lake, south of Torquay, the company has been testing longer laterals and drilled several two-mile horizontal wells as part of its fourth quarter program. This group of wells generated encouraging results with average 30-day initial production (IP30) rates of over 270 boepd and are expected to pay out in approximately 18 months at current strip prices.

number of two-mile horizontal wells in 2019 based on these results and recent well cost reductions of approximately 10 per cent.

As part of its waterflood program, Crescent Point converted 79 producing wells to water injection wells in 2018 for approximately $50 million.

The company plans to convert approximately 145 wells in 2019 for approximately $40 million, highlighting its focus on cost reductions while advancing decline mitigation techniques.

Conversion costs to date in 2019 have been on, or below, budget.

Their Canadian production includes 45 per cent light sour blend, 10 percent mixed sweet blend and 20 per cent medium oil (selling at a 20 per cent premium to Western Canadian Select), originating at Fosterton, in southwest Saskatchewan.

Since the second half of 2018, Crescent Point’s new management team has prioritized its key value drivers, which include disciplined capital allocation, cost reductions and balance sheet improvement.

The company said it now allocates capital based on returns versus simple volume growth. This shift in focus has allowed Crescent Point to adopt a capital program with more consistent activity levels throughout the year and has resulted in increased competition for capital across the company’s portfolio of assets.

Crescent Point has increased its emphasis on cost reductions compared to its historical focus on operational outperformance. Since September 2018, management has reduced the company’s workforce, streamlined its executive team and implemented new initiatives that have resulted in significant savings in general and administrative costs, operating expenses and well costs. Crescent Point is also implementing new practices to further improve its controllable operating expenses. Further savings across the organization are expected as the company continues to focus its asset base.

Crescent Point’s financial flexibility remains strong with cash and unutilized credit capacity of $1.62 billion, no material near-term debt maturities and a strong portfolio of oil and gas commodity hedges. As part of its transition plan, Crescent Point is targeting to further improve its balance sheet through net debt reduction by way of free cash flow generation and proceeds from any dispositions.

Seniors keeping fit

Submitted by Linda Jeffrey Seniors now have an exercise class designed specifically for them. Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation in conjunction with Saskatchewan Health Authority have developed a program called Forever in Motion.

Forever in Motion is a free, gentle exercise class designed to increase flexibility, improve balance as well as increase strength.

In Redvers, Linda Jeffery is the certified instructor. Linda leads 2 classes per week. One for community to attend, Tuesday evenings at 7:30 at the Redvers Union Estates in the recreation room and the other is at the Redvers Haven Long Term Care Facility.

“About a year ago I was looking for a way of serving the community when I remembered the Forever in Motion class my Dad teaches in Wilkie.

I looked through the Forever in Motion website (inmotion.ca) and was able to find and register for an instructors course that was close to Redvers and the best part is it is free. Its an excellent class that is very much needed.

“The 65 and over crowd and us almost seniors make up a very large portion of society. It

is vital that seniors remain or become physically active in order to maintain their health and their independence. There is no senior who cannot do these classes as they are designed for sitting or standing, with or without bands or weights.” To illustrate that point, Linda’s oldest participant is 102 and in a wheelchair. “There aren’t any excuses I don’t have a comeback for”” she chuckles.

“The participants in these classes have commented they sleep so much better on the days she teach, their flexibility is noticeably improved and their balance is better. Fall prevention is the main purpose behind Forever in Motion classes.

The longer we can keep seniors healthy, independent and in their own homes the better it is for everyone.”

The greatest health risk to seniors is a sedentary lifestyle (World Health Organization 1997).

Linda fervently wishes other people would become interested in leading Forever in Motion classes. She envisions someday being able to get some healthy competition going between Redvers and Carlyle to which she states, she is sure Redvers would win. Oh really Linda? You think so do you?

Halbewachs wrestles with a goal

By Mary Moffat Emry Halbgewachs has a goal and she is wrestling for it, not with it. On March 16 her brother, Manny, and her took part in Provincial Club Wrestling at Tommy Douglas Collegiate in Saskatoon, representing the Manor Mustang Wrestling Club.

After a five-hour. drive, another three-hour wait following weigh-ins and skin checks, Emry wres-

tled for 19 seconds and brought home the Gold in the 90 kg .class. There was only one other competitor in her age and weight class. Manny placed 4th out of 6 competitors in the 80 kg class.

March 9 Halbgewachs also took part in the Highschool Provincials for Gordon F Kells, in Regina where she placed 5th in a group of nine wrestlers. She likes

wrestling because she is part of a team so there is still support, but once on the mat it’s just her and her opponent. The double leg takedown employs the same strategy of getting low for a tackle in football, which is her first love. Emry began wrestling along with her brothers when she was 8 and then followed into football as well.

While she will continue to play foot-

ball, given the fact that women’s football is still in its infancy and scholarships are non-existent, Emry is working hard to leverage her wrestling skills and earn a university scholarship to study Medicine, following in the footsteps of former Mustangs, Tianna Kennett and Nathen Schmidt.

Carlyle Skaters get more than expected

By Mary Moffat Coach Dawn Brady took endless videos of the girls’ solos, compiled a seven-minute video for each, and their respective parents submitted an application and the fee and hoped for the best. When the Winter Classic (formerly known as the Jean Norman) Competition was over, the selections were announced and Avery Barnett and Tiana Dellaleau have been chosen for the Saskatchewan Junior Development Team.

When asked what they thought about their chances of making it were, both agreed that you hope but you don’t expect it.

Avery, daughter of Melissa Barsi and Jamie Barnett, is 10 and has been skating for seven years, three with the Carlyle Skating Club, while Tiana, daughter

of Anita and Paul Dellaleau, is 11 and has been skating with the CSC for seven years as well. Other skaters on the team come from all over Saskatchewan, with clubs from LaRonge, Meadow Lake, Moosomin, Regina, Saskatoon, Estevan, and Tisdale.

Being chosen as a part of this elite team means a huge commitment of time, effort and money. The girls will take part in a camp in Saskatoon in April, one in Regina in August and will be required to take part in at least two competitions.

While Avery’s parents are new to this part of skating, Anita and Paul were happy to share what the commitment will look like for their family.

Tiana will take part in two weeks of summer skating school in Virden

mid-July, a competition in Winnipeg, followed by the Regina Camp in August and 2 trips weekly to Estevan for seven weeks, in order to be ready for the Sask Open in Regina, before the ice in Carlyle will be ready. While Avery is excited but a little apprehensive, Tiana knows just how she feels.

She says the best part of the Development Team, besides getting her Team jacket, is getting to know skaters from all over the province. Both girls are grateful for the support of their club and all of their coaches, as well as their parents and families.

While I could go on and on about the girls and their skills, you can see for yourself this Sunday Mar. 24 at 2 p.m. when the Carlyle Skating Club presents their annual Carnival, aptly entitled, “Made in Canada”.

Midget Cougars out of provincials, concentrating on league playoffs Submitted March 17 was an afternoon of wearing Cougar gear and hockey jerseys instead of green. The Carlyle Cougar Midget team hosted the Eston Ramblers for game 2 of the Provincial South final. Our hockey family and our communities showed their support and filled the rink with die-hard fans from all ages.

It was great to see all the Cougar gear fill the stands!

The boys came out strong and put up a good fight ending this game in a 3-3 tie. Unfortunately they came up short in the two game total points losing the series 8-5. Eston advances to the Provincial Championship round against Delisle.

Who wants to think about death “Who wants to think about death? I do, and I want you to, and here’s why” is the name of an article by Father Robert McTeigue.

McTeigue goes on to share this witty remark

A more profound statement McTeigue quotes is from Czesław Miłosz: “Religion, opium for the people. To those suffering pain, humiliation, illness, and serfdom, it promised a reward in an afterlife.

And now we are witnessing a transformation. A true opium for the people is a belief in nothingness after death—the huge solace of thinking that for our betrayals, greed, cowardice, murder we are not going to be judged.”

“Death has been described as a terror, because it removes us from this world; it has been described as a mercy, because it removes us from this world,” says

A rewarding activity I enjoy as a lay minister is taking communion to the sick or shut-ins.

Here are God’s holy people! They embrace the suffering and limitations of their state and all the while prepare for that final union with God. “When I think of the happiness that is in store for me, every sorrow, every pain becomes dear to me.” St Francis of Assisi One of these precious members of the Body of Christ used to greet me with, “I have been waiting for the communion.” She waited until after her 100th birthday and is now with the Lord. I’m sure the Lord was waiting for her.

Precious is that short little visit I get to have as a representative of the Church with God’s holy ones who are sidelined. I remember one visit when I was tempted to hurry because there was a pancake breakfast

waiting. This saint was called home very shortly after and I thought, “Wow! What a precious little time we have.”

Usually we don’t want to think about death “because of the fear of what may come after we have shuffled off this mortal coil” Hamlet said. “Live so as not to fear death. For those who live well in the world, death is not frightening but sweet and precious,” said St. Rose of Viterbo.

There are unfathomable riches in the consoling rituals and graces afforded to us by the Church. Yet many of our churches are unusually empty on Sunday mornings. Small wonder we don’t want to think about death. We are too busy with worldly things. “We will have time for that stuff later,” the devil whispers in our ears.

The church helps us through that final portal on our way to meet the Lord. There are sacraments, including the anointing of the sick, and there are prayers of

Jays fans, however, will have lots to cheer for as soon as the can’t-miss kid (he’d better not miss) Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., joins the big-league club in late April. Fellow phenom Bo Bichette may also rise from the minors after a terrific spring at the plate.

Around the Big Leagues, eyes will be focused on Philadelphia, where Bryce Harper joined the Phillies with a $330 million 13-year contract, and San Diego, where Manny Machado signed with the Padres for $300 million over 10 years.

The Yankees, who belted a record 267 home runs last year, could exceed that mark this year, and probably win the A.L. East over defending Series champion Boston Red Sox. The Sox will

likely be without closer Craig Kimbrel (who as a free agent still hadn’t found a new home as of press time). Houston Astros, led by the diminutive Jose Altuve, are still going to be powerful, and the Dodgers will once again contend in the National League, proving once again that money not only talks, it wins. Mike Trout of the Angels remains the game’s best player and fans in Atlanta will be anticipating more heroics from Ronald Acuna, Jr., last year’s rookie of the year.

Let me count the ways

By Linda Wegner While strolling through the mall I chatted with one of the security staff and mentioned to him that one of the “parking lot regulars” had accidently dumped his load of cans and bottles. His response both surprised and blessed me, wishing now I’d gone over and helped pick up the mess.

Over the months I’ve seen Joe (not his real name) near the city bus terminal and assumed he was in need of extra cash, a situation not all that uncommon. He always sits on a chair beside several grocery carts furnished with huge plastic bags, room enough for lots of empty cans and bottles. I’ve also wondered how he got so many on a daily basis and how come he was allowed to be there, not far from the entrance to one of our city’s shopping malls.

Not only that, I was always surprised by the number of people who drove up each morning to deposit their cans and bottles with him. As it turns out, this gentleman’s dedication to collecting, sorting and selling his “merchandise” has nothing to do with his personal betterment.

“No,” the security guy told me, “Joe collects those things until noon, then he goes and has lunch.

After that he takes the cans and bottle to the recycle place, sells them and with the money he gets, he purchases gift cards to distribute to single moms and/or others in need. He’s back at it again the next morning.”

Shortly after that conversation I boarded the bus for the ride home. During those quiet moments I found myself both taken aback by my assumptions about him but all the while praising God for the myriad ways in which we can serve Him. “God has given each of you a gift…. Use [it] well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:10

The monthly meeting of the tenants thanked the many people who have lighted our winter days: Members of the staff who have called bingo; The Villa Guild for the Floor Curling bonspiel and Pizza for supper, with promise of Winter Games to come.; The Associated Gospel Church Team brought their board games to play with us, and visited over lunch.

Randy from the Town has dug out our bird feeders and filled them. The Tenants voted to send some of their TeleMiracle Teddy Bears to a Safe House for abused women and children in Regina. Doris Erickson needs Craft People with new ideas to keep our skilled hands working.

Circle of Friends topic this week was “Lost and Found”. Ralph Mills lost his fountain pen while cleaning the barn. He found it next spring in the potato patch. Ralph Burke lost his wife,, “but not really”. She has just gone on before.” Violet had lost her daughter to an asthma attack. Janet and Mary had both lost the diamond in their engagement ring; never found. However, Mary told of someone who shone a flashlight in a dark room and did find theirs. Ferne Mills had a treasure put in her auction sale by mistake. The auctioneer was able to trace it and get it back. Margaret Penner’s family had a pig which swam the dugout, and showed up a couple of months later. Leora searched in vain for a puzzle piece, which she found under the wheel of her walker. The conversation brought up the “90 and 9” hymn so we sang it around the tea table.

The World Day of Prayer was held at the Villa. Those taking part included Roy Bortolotto, with Mary Lou Sweeting playing Roy’s digital piano.

Happy birthday to Joan Colborn who celebrated her 85th birthday and to her brother, Ralph Burke, who celebrated his 88th birthday at the Drop In Centre on Mar. 16. Many family and friends enjoyed the afternoon.

Happy birthday also to Jolynmae Trinidad who celebrated her 18th birthday last weekend with a party at Marie Vail’s. A large group of family and friends attended. Jolynmae has travelled to Edmonton where she will visit with her mother and sister for an extended time.

During the past week we have had several events some fundraising and all involving food: the Catholic Church sponsored a St. Patrick’s Day Stew and Biscuits on Mar. 14.

They also held a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Luncheon on Mar. 5.

Friday, Mar. 15 was

the Wawota Skating Club annual Ice Show and pork loin supper.

These annual events provide a showcase for all of the hard working skaters to show their skills and improvement from last year.

Special guest was Braid LeNouail from Churchbridge.

Sunday, Mar. 17 was the date for the Wawota United Church’s Time and Talent.

A good crowd enjoyed a roast beef supper, silent auctions and entertainment. A new format was being tried and will be assessed. There was also an on line auction which was something new.

Other good news for Wawota residents was that as of last week our $1,000,000 loan for our water treatment plant, taken out in 1999 has been paid off.

Evelyn Green also celebrated her 85th birthday on Feb. 20 with extended family.

Marie Vail spent a week in Ottawa recently.

She visited with granddaughter Carly and Grant Anderson, Aftrid and Miles. Miles is Marie’s latest great grandson at 4 months old.

Those returning from winter homes are: Joe and Lauraine Weatherald, home from their annual stay in Florida.

Ross and Donna Petterson who spent two months in Mesa, Arizona.

Terry and Gwen Curzon who were in Yuma for two months.

Kent and Kim Brown, Falyn and Kyler who holidayed in Mexico.

Edward Sidney Hill, late of Weyburn, SK, passed away March 7, 2019 at the age of 94 years.

Edward Sidney Hill was born in Manor, SK on November 9, 1924 to Arthur and Ethel Hill.

On December 12, 1968, Edward married Helen Jasperson at the United Church in Estevan, SK. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Ethel Hill; brothers: Clifford, Philip, Fred and Arthur; and his sister Clarice.

Edward is survived by his wife, Helen; as well as several nephews, nieces and friends.

Ed farmed with his brother Philip for many years.

After he and Helen married, they lived in Manor, SK for 12 more years until retirement. They then moved to Redvers, SK and spent many years of retirement there until health started to fail. They moved to Weyburn, SK in August 2009 until his passing.

A Funeral Service for Edward was held Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, 1825 ~ 1st Avenue, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas of�iciating. All those attending the service were Honorary Pallbearers. Luncheon followed the service at RD Family Funeral Chapel. Interment was held at Redvers Cemetery, Redverse, SK. For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Edward may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, Unit 26, 1738 Quebec Avenue, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 1V9.

AI was born July 10,1938 and passed away Jan.23,2019(the day of his Dad,s birthday).

He attended school at Roseview, Frobisher and took his Grade 12 at Father Athol Murry Notre Dame,Wilcox. He attended Air Cadets at Dundum. His first jobs were in the oil patch, He was a labourer in building Saint Michael,s at Lumsden.

Al & Loretta were married in 1962 after which they moved to Lumsden were Al worked as a mechanic. ln 1996 he along with Ray bought Willmar Garage, and the families settled into the Willmar community.

Al drove school bus for many years transporting Willmar students to Lampman school. As one student sent condolence and stated (Al not only drove school bus,but had us walk a mile or two).

AI & family were extras in the filiming of’Who Has Seen The Wind”.

In 1979 Al followed his dream and along with Ray went into road const. #605 at Kisbey was the first project. In 1984 Sand seal projects were tendered out. Al sharpened his pencil , he along with family and many employees travelled many miles to these projects, from Flin Flon to La Loche down thought the province and across from Manitoba to Alberta. In 1991 Al along with Loretta & family incorporated Heidinger’s Construction 1991 and carried on with Al’s dream. Camp was set up in many towns, residents became friends, employees made new friends and some brought home partners. Al’s quote at awards night. ”lf it wasn’t for each & everyone of you, our Company would not be what it is”.

Al was a member of Sask Roadbuilders and Sask Rural Municipalities where he met other Road Const companies and worked with them on many road projects.

Al joined the Knight of Columbus in 1967,and become a charter member of Moose Mountain Kof C in 1990,was appointed Financial Sect which he held for 28 years. He received the Honors of the Fourth Degree with Archbishop Mathieu Assembly in Estevan in 1992.

In his retiring years he picked up his guiter & violin and under the guidance of Father Kubash provided music for Immmaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. This was to be where he belonged, playing with other musicians for Jam sessions, NursingHomes, Weddings, Funerals, Dances, Casinoes or just a gathering.

AI was noted for wine making either by fruit (scratch) or kit, Many bottles were shared with Family & friends.

He spent time with Father Banga at Kenosee Boys & Girls camp, these times were more than helping it was friendship and always a hoot.

AI & Loretta travelled many miles with travel trailor visiting relatives & friends in Canada & USA,spending many winters in the sunny south.

Enjoyable times were spent with the Children, Grandchildren , Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews, snowmobiling,f ishing or just riding in Jeep, Quad or Golf cart.

Thank you to the Staff at Carlyle Medical Clinic, Moose Mountain Lodge, Arcola Health Center, Arcola Family Health Clinic, Sun Country, Supreme Ambulance, words can not express the care & compassion all these Great people have & give.

James (Jim) Gould Easton 1943 - 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. James (Jim) Gould Easton passed away at the Regina General Hospital on March 2, 2019. Jim was born in Wawota on December 14, 1943, the �irst of two identical baby boys. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Leah, parents-in-law Arthur and Beryl Cameron, nephew Adam Cameron, and brother-in-law Brian Yeo. Jim is survived by his wife Josephine, daughter Tammy (Todd) Davies, son Ryan (Allison) Easton, grandchildren Hunter, Talisa, Marlee and Julia, brothers Larry (Dorothy), Bob (Margaret) and Ken, brother-in-law Larry (Terri) Cameron and sister-in-law Katherine Cameron, and many nieces and nephews.

Jim went to school at Model and completed his high school at Wawota. He loved playing football at school and that love continued on throughout his life as he avidly followed the Riders.

After graduating he started farming with his dad and brother, Bob. The farm “Kenosee Park – Frank Easton & Sons” raised purebred Angus cattle and grain.

Jim was active in 4-H Beef Club as an assistant leader for 10 years and sports such as curling, football, and baseball. He played baseball with the Elks, later called the Cardinals and then with the Lazers (Old Timers). He served as a Director of the Saskatchewan Angus Association, Recreation Board and the Sask Wheat Pool Committee.

On June 12, 1971 he married Josephine Cameron, the love of his life for 48 years.

On March 19, 1972 they welcomed Tammy to their lives and a son, Ryan, joined them on December 11, 1973.

In 1981 his parents retired to Wawota and the farm became “Kenosee Park – Easton Bros.”, but in 1984 the partnership dissolved and Jim and his family moved their home and began their own farm called 2J Angus. It was a beautiful location to begin this new chapter. This new adventure was hard work for them as they built everything from the ground up. Hard work was something Jim was never scared of and was just part of his character, he never stopped working and pushing through his illness to ensure that his work was getting done.

Jim loved his Aberdeen Angus cattle. Knew everything about each one of them and was proud of the herd he had developed and the friendships that he gained through his cattle.

In 2001 their family began growing with the birth of their �irst and only grandson, Hunter Davies and the marriage of Tammy and Todd. Ryan and Allison were married in 2002. Talisa Davies joined them in 2003, Marlee Easton in 2006 and Julia Easton in 2008.

Jim loved his new children and the beautiful grandchildren that these unions gifted him with. He and Josephine would try to attend every event that they could for all their grandchildren. He was so very proud of everyone and their accomplishments.

He was a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren…he was a quiet, kind and honest man.

He will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved him.

A service celebrating Jim’s life was held in the Wawota Town Hall on March 12th, 2019. The family was humbled by the number of friends and family that attended his service, the kind words and stories that you all have shared with us.

Thank you to Dr. Krause in Moosomin for getting Jim to Regina into the care of Dr. Moustapha, whose care and concern was above and beyond all expectations, and the amazing care he received from the nurses and doctors while he was hospitalized in SICU at the Regina General Hospital.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to STARS Air Ambulance in memory of Jim.

Canola exports to China an ongoing issue

By Calvin Daniels The ongoing issues with canola exports to China has to have Prairie producers adding a wild card to the deck as they prepare to deal out their 2019 cropping intentions.

Canada’s trade diversification minister has come out with a statement calling on the Chinese government needs to “show us the evidence” of alleged impurities it used as justification for yanking Richardson International Ltd.’s canola export licence, details a recent Star Phoenix story.

“The Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspected this canola, said it was of high quality as is the nature of the product that we export. The Chinese say that it has impurities. We say to the Chinese, ‘Show us. Show us a sample,’ ” Jim Carr said.

It is more than likely the so-called impurities are nothing more than the Chinese government putting some trade pressure on Canada as a way to show strength regarding issues between the two countries which

have nothing to do with agricultural trade.

It is a tactic that definitely gets noticed here since in 2017, the last year for which annual data are available, Saskatchewan exported $3.6 billion worth of canola seed — about 26 per cent of all agricultural exports. China was among its best customers, buying $1.4 billion of that total, according to the Star Phoenix article.

Long term China is going to remain a buyer of canola oil based on a growing middle class looking for it on their store shelves.

But, short term the commodity can certainly be a political football, which can raise some questions for farmers here headed to spring planting.

Farmers have never had control over political posturing using agricultural products as a hammer, and they have even less control over weather.

In December an article at www.theweathernetwork.com also has to be a wild card for famers in general and canola producers specifically.

“The influence of El Niño can be felt far and wide and heavy rainfalls, catastrophic flooding, and mass crop failures can all be attributed to this powerful climate cycle. Early compilations of 2018’s data indicate that this year will likely become the fourth warmest on record, and the developing El Niño event is increasing the odds that 2019 will be the hottest year that human life has ever experienced,” noted the article.

Is a forecast in December a guarantee? Of course not, but it does suggest some reason for concern.

Extreme heat, especially at the time canola flowers, can cause problems as blooms are lost to the heat, which impacts the number of pods on a plant.

While the Chinese situation could be solved long before the 2019 crop is harvested and ready for sale, and weather has a tendency to moderate closer to the actual date of a forecast, the two factors do suggest canola could face some definite production and marketing challenges in 2019.

Report from the Legislature Dan D’Autremont, MLA for Cannington From the Trudeau carbon tax and troublesome federal legislation such as Bill C-69, to the challenge of Canadian canola shipments being turned away at port in China, the spring sitting of the legislature is about standing up for Saskatchewan. We will keep standing up for Saskatchewan families and work hard to ensure our province and economy remain strong. Despite economic headwinds facing our province, our industries continue to drive positive job growth. New figures from Statistics Canada are showing seven consecutive months of strong job gains in Saskatchewan. The spring sitting of the legislature has also seen the launch of some important initiatives including a new provincial crime watch system which can send text messages, emails and place phone calls to residents about criminal activity in their area. Efforts to improve wireless services in rural communities continues with the announcement of 8 more small cell site towers to help improve coverage. Better coverage in our communities helps connect everyone from the farm to the city, and we’re going to keep working to improve our wireless network in Saskatchewan.

Our focus on mental health is delivering services directly to those who need them most through Police and Crisis Teams, Community Recovery Teams, and our new Mental Capacity Building pilot

projects in Saskatchewan schools. The grand opening of the new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford is a landmark achievement in mental health for our province. It takes a unique approach to mental health and will allow us to better treat and care for people with mental illness. Representing the single largest investment in mental health in the history of our province, and the cumulative efforts and vision of many people, the new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford is now among the most advanced mental health treatment centres in Canada. Our government’s commitment to early years education and child care can be seen in funding for the creation of seven new family resource centres, as well as hundreds more affordable child care spaces in communities across the province. We also have a new agreement to expand access to dental services for Saskatchewan people. This includes cleft lip and palate treatment for infants, children, and adolescents, better coverage for dental extractions for cancer patients, and specialized dental consultations for medical patients. These and other investments are possible because of a strong and growing Saskatchewan economy. This is why our government is focused on standing up for Saskatchewan families and jobs at a time when the NDP is more concerned with defending their weak leadership and reckless, ideological economic policies. Saskatchewan’s Trade Export

Minister Jeremy Harrison has been on a trade mission to southeast Asia. He’s been there promoting our agri-food strengths as there is a huge opportunity for increased trade between our province and this part of the world. Right now, we are seeing a concerning trend with the federal government as it relates to trade. Instead of working to remove U.S. tariffs on steel & aluminum, we see the ambassador helping the Prime Minister with his crisis control; we have no permanent ambassador to China, where we just had a shipment of canola turned away at port; and we have seen a deterioration in trade relations with the nation of India. The U.S., China, and India are Saskatchewan’s top 3 trading partners.

While our province has the food, fuel and fertilizer the world needs, we need the federal government to treat our trading relationships with the seriousness that they deserve. On March 20th your Saskatchewan Party government will deliver the 2019-20 Saskatchewan Budget. We are on track to deliver on our 3-year plan to balance while maintaining a competitive tax and business environment and focusing on important government programs and services that are sustainable today and for the long-term.
