86th Annual Moose Mountain Professional Rodeo

By Darcie Khounnoraj Horses, decorated �loats, mini quads and cars, hysterical bagpipers, kids on bikes, antique cars, trucks and tractors were just some of the parade displays that caught the eyes of excited children and curious on-lookers at the annual Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo in Kennedy on Saturday, July 21 As usual, the children collected bags full of candy goodness from the parade participants and some of the lucky parents were able to sneak a few candies while doing their candy quality check.

As the parade came to an end, the roadside crowds made their way to the rodeo grounds to take in a fun, adrenaline �illed experience at the annual (Truck) Demolition Derby. This year, eight demo derby daredevils entered the pit for some truck crashing action in two afternoon Heats. Drivers from Heat 1 included Brandon Tarr, Pat Dequier, Matt Furet and Jayden Currie. Heat 2 drivers included Riley Levai, Hunter Davies, Billy Easton and Joey Meszaros. Heat winners Pat Dequier (1) and Hunter Davis (2) took victory over the afternoon derby.

The 86th Annual Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo Association opened with early morning performances in Ladies Barrel Racing, Steer Wrestling, Tie Down Roping and Team Roping for the early birds in the bleachers. The rodeo grounds were busting with visitors and competitors alike from Kennedy, local neighbouring communities, several Canadian provinces, United States and some as far away as Australia.

The early evening performance in Bull Riding, Tie Down Roping, Novice Bareback, Novice Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling, Bareback, Team Roping, Steer Riding and

Ladies Barrel Racing kept the crowd on the edge of their seats on the surrounding bleachers. The action-packed evening was a �irst for many visitors and for some, part of their summer routine.

The attending crowd cheered on the performers with ooh’s and awe’s and sat in an empathetic quietness as several contenders limped away with injuries. As any rodeo goes, injuries often come with the territory, however, only one was taken by ambulance for a broken leg injury during the entire rodeo weekend event.

Beer gardens were opened at 2pm for the legal-aged crowd, keeping the attending rodeo’ers quenched on the warm summer day.

Children could be heard in all corners of the arena playing in the sand pit, bouncing in the colourful bouncers and eating treats like mini donuts, ice cream, popcorn and poutines from the food trucks.

Musical entertainers ‘Taming Susan’ delivered a variety of music to the cabaret participants following the rodeo performances. The Reginabased party band/rock band played a variety of songs including hits from rock legends including but not limited to Pat Benetar, Steve Earl, The Ramones and AC/DC. Saturday’s performances were dedicated to two extraordinary local men who not only enjoyed the annual rodeo in Kennedy but played in�luential roles in them as well. The late Fred Berglund, long-time member and President of the Moose Mountain Rodeo Association for 1985 and 1986 and the late Grant Ferch, member and President of the Moose Mountain Rodeo Association were both remembered for their smiling faces and their love of rodeo.

Day two of the

Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo began with a delicious pancake breakfast at the Friendship Centre, followed by a Cowboy Church Service. At one o’clock, the beer gardens opened for the attending crowd as they settled in for another afternoon of rodeo entertainment.

Announcer Tim Edge kept the crowd entertained with jokes about his mother-in-law and rodeo related banter, all while keeping the visitors informed on the riders and their rodeo experiences.

Horses paraded into the arena at great speed with riders holding �lags during the Rodeo Grand Entry, with Miss Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo 2018, 22-year-old Brittany Doyle of Sydenham, last to enter holding the Canadian �lag as attendees stood for the National Anthem and in silence for those we have lost.

“Breed Circuit is all about the show and not the go!” smiled Miss Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo 2018, Brittany Doyle, an accomplished horsewoman who has competed in the APHC breed circuit as an allaround competitor. “I’m very excited and thankful to be the queen for Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo Association. I couldn’t be here without the help of the Board of Directors and volunteers, that made this dream a reality.

I can’t wait to represent them at the Miss Rodeo Canada pageant this October. I hope to make Saskatchewan proud as they have accepted me with open arms and I hope to come back soon for more exciting rodeo!

This is now my home away from home!”

The 86th Annual Moose Mountain Rodeo Association Professional Rodeo contenders kept spectators on the edge of their seats over the weekend at the Kennedy rodeo grounds.

Bareback, Novice Saddle Bronc, Tie Down Roping, Bareback, Steer Wrestling, Saddle Bronc, Team Roping, Steer Riding, Ladies Barrel Racing and Bull Riding impressed the spectators with the sportsmanship and strengths in their events.

Sunday’s events were far from boring as the crowd witnessed several close calls at the fence-lines and were sometimes smack dab in the middle of a dirt storm. During some of the rodeo events, con-

testants lost their hats, a boot was thrown during a bronc ride, a shoe was thrown following a pony ride and a steer ripped a contender’s shirt wide open before being chased out of the arena.

Steer Rider Darienne Farenden was presented the 10th (and �inal) Lawrence Hutchison bronze trophy for his exceptional steer riding and sportsmanship as the rodeo events ended and the last pony ride event started.

9 ways to improve your golf game Wa r m e r w e a t h e r sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between.

• Choose the right clubs. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should in�luence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more con�ident in their abilities they can start to make their own choices.

• Anchor your feet.

Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed

players will keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance.

• Identify your weaknesses. As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work.

• Fix your alignment.

Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance.

• Use your torso for power. The torso is essential to a solid swing.

Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then main-

tain the same spine angle and posture on the downswing.

• Use the wind. Not every golf game will be played in perfect weather.

A good player knows how to make adjustments for the wind depending on the shot. Use the wind to your advantage when you can, and adjust your swing when hitting into the wind.

• Become a better chipper. Many players put so much emphasis on their backswings and putt shots that they fail to devote any practice to chips. All shots are important for golfers trying to shed strokes off of their scores.

• Keep �it. Maintaining or improving your physical strength and overall health can help your golf game. Exercise and eat right, and you will have more endurance on the links.

These golf terms are par for the course

Golf is a game of sport and skill that can be played at any age. Millions of people in North America participate in golf as a recreational endeavor or a professional pursuit.

As of the spring 2016, 25.13 million people in the United States played golf over the previous 12 months, according to Statistica.

People may immediately think Canada’s sports-based loyalty favors hockey. However, on the recreational side, golf is king in the country.

Canada has the fourth most golf courses of any country in the world, says the National Golf Foundation. Plus, one out of every 10 Canadians play golf — a participation rate that is more than double that of the United States.

Storied golf history Although golf can be traced back to the Netherlands during the Middle Ages, many people concur that the modern game of golf — played over 18 holes — is a Scottish invention.

The popularity of the sport began to spread throughout the world from Great Britain. The

Golf lingo Understanding the terminology is key to becoming a full-�ledged golf fanatic. While golf lingo is extensive, here is a sampling of some of the more popular terms to get novices started, courtesy of the PGA. Approach: A shot hit towards the green.

Attack: The relative angle at which the clubhead approaches the ball at impact.

Backswing: The motion that involves the club and every element of the body in taking the club away from the ball.

Birdie: A score of one under par on a hole.

Bogey: A score of one over par on a hole.

Bunker: A hallow comprised of sand or grass that serves as an obstacle.

Carry: The distance a ball will �ly in the air.

Chip: A short approach with a low trajectory.

Chunk: A poor shot caused by hitting the turf.

Divot: The turf displaced when the club strikes the ball.

Downswing: The swing forward from the top of the backswing.

Eagle: A score of two under par on a hole.

Golf range: A facility where people can practice golf swings.

Grip: The positioning of hands on the club.

Hole: A round receptacle on the green that the ball is aimed into.

Lie: As it relates to the golf ball, the position when it has come to rest.

Links: Speci�ic term for a course built on linksland, which is land reclaimed from the ocean.

Mulligan: An extra shot taken on a poor �irst shot.

Par: The score an accomplished player is expected to make on a hole, either a three, four or �ive.

Putt: A shot on the green.

Stance: The position of the feet.

Golf terms are as varied as the game itself.

Knowing commonly used words and phrases makes for a more intimate understanding of the sport.

The Moon approaches 3rd-quarter phase as the month begins, meaning it’s a third of the way through the lunar month, or a little over 22 days since new.

The Minor Planet Juno is occulted on the 4th, visible from eastern Europe, Scandinavia, western Russia, and extreme northern Canada. On Friday, the 10th, the Moon reaches perigee, and tidal areas will see extreme high tides. On the 14th, Venus is within 6 degrees of our satellite; Jupiter is 5 degrees south on the 17th; Saturn is 2 degrees south on the 21st. The Moon is full on the 26th.

Mercury is too near the Sun to be seen, until midmonth, when it appears in the eastern morning sky.

Venus reaches maximum eastern elongation, but lower in the sky because of the ecliptic geometry – lower to the horizon. Telescopic viewers will see its phase change from gibbous to crescent, which observation, over 400 years ago, led Galileo to conclude that Venus was not orbiting the Earth, but circled the Sun instead.

Mars continues retrograde motion in western Capricornus, and already fading from its nearest Earthly approach in July.

Jupiter, the gas giant, has four large moons that often come between the Sun and the planet. The events are termed a “transit,” either of the moon itself, or the moon’s shadow. In the latter two-thirds

of August, numerous double-shadow transits occur, beginning on the 9th, then the 13th, 15th, 16th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 27th, and 30th. The Moon gets into the act on the 17th.

Saturn is visible in the evening hours through the month, and is joined by the Moon on the 21st.

Uranus is stationary on the 7th, and then slowly begins retrograde motion thereafter.

Neptune rises in mid-evening, still in retrograde motion in Aquarius. It’s good to remember that retrograde motion is an illusion caused by the relatively rapid motion of the Earth in its orbit. Early astronomers had a dif�icult time trying to resolve what they saw with the beliefs at the time – that the Earth was at the centre of the Universe. Thus, they had to make up a lot of imaginary motions to account for observations.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the evening of July 12. Expect about 90 meteors per hour under good viewing conditions.

Disaster Prep: Kit building Part 1 Let’s revisit the motto: Get a kit, make a plan, be informed. I get comments nearly every day about this column.

Most everyone is positive and say they enjoy the information. When I ask whether or not they’re actually doing the stuff, quite often they admit that they know they should, but just haven’t gotten started yet. Both F.E.M.A and the Red Cross recommend having a 72 hour emergency kit. That is having enough supplies and equipment to get you through three days without electricity, water or trips to the store. Just for the record I think 72 hours is a good start, but a 14 day kit is even better. Maybe we should ask the folks back east that survived any hurricane if they think 72 hours is enough.

One of the concerns I often hear is, “I’m just not sure where to begin.” So beginning today, for the

next seven weeks I will be posting a step-by-step kit-building plan. At the end of the seven weeks, if you follow the steps, you will have a kit that will get you through the first 72 hours of most disasters. Not only will you will have a kit, but you will have a plan in place that will increase your family’s chances of survival. Keep in mind it is my experience that kits naturally grow because once you begin you keep �inding essentials that you just can’t live without. So let’s get started.

Things to purchase Week 1: 1. A battery-powered radio, one with a N.O.A.A. weather channel and extra batteries.

2. Flashlights or battery powered lanterns (with extra batteries, of course) Avoid using candles because of the �ire hazard.

3. Water to last three days. At least one gal-

lon per person per day.

Start with one gallon this week.

Tips for Week 1: 1. Start with these items that emergency responders consider the most critical to getting you through the �irst 72 hours until basic services may be restored.

2. Don’t be overwhelmed by a huge list of items. I’ve identi�ied the most important things.

Just buy a few items each week for seven weeks and you will be prepared for the most likely emergencies in our area.

3.

Commercially bottled water is recommended to ensure safety.

Replace before “use by” date expires.

I suggest you keep your kit in one general location.

That way, when the power is out, you won’t be running around in the dark searching for your stuff.

Fairs, carnivals, rodeos, and roving amusement parks are popular summer attractions. Rides and raf�les may attract the majority of revelers, but fairs and carnivals also are great places to enjoy mouth-watering food.

Fried dough, meats on sticks, pretzels, cotton candy, cheesesteaks, and other aromas waft through the air at carnivals. However, fairs have not always been so great for people watching their calories. And while fairs might not be diet-friendly, it’s not impossible to adhere to one’s diet while visiting the fair.

Fill up at home Prior to heading out to the fair, be sure to eat a �illing, healthy breakfast.

This will provide ample nutrients and decrease the likelihood that you will overindulge in less healthy fare while at the carnival.

Foods that are comprised of protein and �iber can help you to feel fuller longer. Pack a snack that can provide a boost of energy prior to indulging in any fair foods. Trail mix or a low-calorie protein

Stay hydrated The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says that mild dehydration produces similar symptoms to hunger. If you feel hungry after eating, your body may only need �luids and not food. Therfore, reach for water or a hydrating sports drink (particularly when it is hot outside) as a �irst step to abating hunger symptoms, especially if you’ve recently eaten.

Choose healthy food vendors Look for vendors that offer things like yogurt cups, roasted vegetables, lean meats, and fresh fruits. Kabobs that include lean meats that are low in calories can make a great carnival meal. Corn on the cob without gobs of butter also can be a �illing snack.

A small dose of cotton candy, which is just 100 calories per ounce, can offer a sweet �ix while you avoid deep-fried concoctions. Keep in mind that cheese curds can set you back 650 calories and a funnel cake 720 calories, according to the YMCA. It can take several miles of traversing the fair to burn all those calories.

Watch portion sizes If you splurge on a treat or two, consider sharing it with a friend or family member to cut the portion size. A single bite of a calorie-rich food can be enough to satisfy a craving.
