Local student receives Carlyle District Lions Club Scholarship The Carlyle District Lions Club Scholarship was recently awarded to Carlyle resident Katelynn Duhamel, who completed the Continuing Care Assistant Certificate program at Southeast College’s Weyburn campus. The Lions Club scholarship, as well as over $90,000 in additional Southeast College scholarships and bursaries, were awarded to students earlier this spring at events in Weyburn, Estevan, and Moosomin.

Southeast College scholarships and bursaries are made possible by donations from community organizations, businesses and individuals, as well as various fundraising events. Eligible funds are matched by the Ministry of Advanced Education through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship (SIOS) program. Of the $90,000 awarded, over $42,000 was contributed through the SIOS program.

Southeast College is proud to be the Trainer of Choice in southeast Saskatchewan offering educational opportunities that encourage students to learn where they live. A number of post-secondary programs are now accepting applications for 201819, including instructor-led University of Regina courses in Weyburn, Estevan, Moosomin and Indian Head. Rick Hallberg has won first place in the Senior Men’s Provincial Championship July 26, and Jay Mohr won first place in the Inaugural Mid- Masters Men’s Provincial Championship also held at Golf Kenosee the same day.

Hallberg has now qualified for the Canadian team with this first place win and will be heading to the Senior Canadian Golf Tournament in New Brunswick September 3- 6. “This is now the sixth provincial team I’ve been on,” said Hallberg who also won a qualifying spot for the Canadian Mid-Master’s, the same as Mohr, that will be taking place in Victoria, B.C. in August, but won’t be going because he has some special plans and a special reason for them.

“I’m not going to Victoria to the Canadian Mid- Masters because I’ve already committed to being a caddy at the CP Women Canadian Open that’s coming to Regina in August,” said Hallberg. “I think it will be a good experience.”

Hallberg has already been on the Canadian team at the Mid- Masters tournament three times, and had the team he was on place second twice in his golfing career.

“It’s the top women golfers in the world that will be at the CP Women’s Canadian Open, “Hallberg said.

“They don’t make the same amount of money men make on the PGA tour. A lot of them don’t have their own caddies.

They need local caddies to help them out, so I volunteered.”

Hallberg was very impressed with the quality of the event where the Senior Men Provincial Championship had been held.

“Golf Kenosee did a spectacular job hosting this event. Every guy I played with couldn’t believe how nice the golf course was, they said it was by far the best place they had played all year.”

“I want to thank the ground keeper Calvin, Amy and the crew, and Brent and the pro shop, and food and beverage, for doing such a great job to get Kenosee ready for this tournament,” said Hallberg.

Domestic Assault In Carlyle there was a domestic assault charge laid on an individual who assaulted a common law partner in front of police. “We’re not exactly sure what happened before we got there, but we know what happened after,” said Simons.

A second call in the Carlyle area lead to charges for both parties involved, one party was then transported to Regina due to outstanding warrants.

Disturbance There was a disturbance at White Bear Health Clinic where several individual got into a fight. All involved where charged for disturbance and give a court a notice to appear in court.

A disturbance was reported in the Carlyle Area at a residence.

Emergency Medical Services attended to treat a minor injury and no charges were filed.

Family Dispute A dispute was attended in Carlyle between two individuals breaking up, no charges were laid and police kept the peace.

Erratic Driving A call came in of an erratic driving on highway 13 throwing beer cans out of the car window driving near Kisby.

Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

Theft A Carlyle business reported shoplifting and it is still under investigation.

Trafficking Illegal Substance A suspect for drug trafficking has been reported and is still un-

der investigation. Police cannot release the area it occurred while the investigation is ongoing.

Child Welfare A call was placed about concern for a child’s welfare, the situation was resolved.

Impaired Driving A person was charged with impaired driving and received a 30 day vehicle impoundment and a suspension of driver’s license.

Motor Vehicle and Traffic Related Over 20 vehicle offenses occurred including speeding, not all resulted in fines or charges. Break and Enter A break and enter was reported in Wawota to a business and is still under investigation.

Mental Health Police responded to a call and the situation was resolved in an appropriate manner.

Additional post-secondary education grants for students with permanent disabilities The Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan program has specific features to help students with permanent disabilities pay for post-secondary education.

Students with a permanent disability: · May be eligible to receive the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities, which provides up to $2,000 per school year to assist with educational or living costs; · May take a reduced course load and be eligible for loans and grants for a longer academic period; · May be eligible to receive the Canada-Saskatchewan Student Grant for Services & Equipment, which provides up to $10,000 per program year to purchase education-related services and assistive equipment, such as: tu-

tors, interpreters, computer software and specialized transportation; and · Do not have to make the fixed student contribution.

“Our government wants all students to have the opportunity to access post-secondary education,” Advanced Education Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor said.

“We hope that these additional grants and features will make it easier for students with permanent disabilities to pursue post-secondary education.”

There are also new updates this year to the Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan program that benefit students with permanent disabilities.

These include: · Ability to request grants-only funding, which is money that you do not need to pay back;

and decline the loans portion, which is money you must pay back. · Students with a permanent disability enrolled in adult basic education, can apply for the Canada-Saskatchewan Student Grant for Services & Equipment without applying for a student loan. They may also be eligible for the Provincial Training Allowance.

Students can now submit their student financial assistance applications for the 201819 student loan year for academic programs beginning on or after August 1, 2018. Students are encouraged to apply early. Students with permanent disabilities are eligible to access all student loan and grant programs.

Trump at loggerheads with China, Mexico, Europe and Canada

By Calvin Daniels You don’t have to have been involved in agriculture all that long to recall that the biggest detriment to Canadian farm exports used to be subsidies paid by the United States and the European Union.

The two sides were battling for markets by undercutting each other to attract buyers, and then backfilling losses to their farmers by cutting subsidy cheques out of government accounts. For Canada it was a case of being caught in the middle, forced to sell low, but without the financial resources of the two big players to bolster farm accounts with a subsidy.

It took years to level the playing field in large part thanks to framework deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement which put in place some common sense rules to trade.

That is not to suggest NAFTA, or any other trade deal between trading partners, is flawless, and disputes do arise, but they are at least a foundation to keep trade flowing under a set of agreed to rules.

And trade deals did help reduce subsidy wars, evolving farm trade beyond a wild west atmosphere where sales were often made by cutting someone a cheque on the side either to support framers, or offset costs for the buyer.

Enter American president Donald Trump and the wild and woolly west reappears.

Trump seems to operate by one guiding principle in terms of business, never sign a deal where you don’t come out the big winner.

Some might suggest that is the crux of business, but if you win by limiting the trade partner’s ability to also make a reasonable dollar you could end up without partners to deal with. Trump doesn’t seem to care.

So NAFTA has been reopened and sits in tatters with little likelihood it will be resuscitated anytime soon.

And on a grander scale Trump’s posturing has thrown the United States into what is fast become a full-scale global trade war.

Trump is already at loggerheads with China, Mexico, Europe and Canada, and that is highly disruptive to trade in general, and it is having an impact on the agriculture sector specifically.

The impact is having a blow back effect on American farmers too, so the US has announced it is going to prop up the sector with those frightful subsidies.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced US$12 billion in federal aid programs for farmers to help them cope with declining prices and falling demand for American soybeans, pork, fruits, and other crops, demand lost based on Trump’s high-handed approach to trade.

This move has to send a shudder through the farm sector because it is one of those things that producers have no control over, but that can affect profitability in a major way. Subsidies are not a trade mechanism where Canada can reasonably compete, nor is it a way to facilitate reasonable trade between partners.

Looking for gems and learning to love

THE

Near the end of his life the evangelist St John was old and frail, living on Patmos, and having to be carried out for Mass every Sunday morning. People kept coming back, though his message was always the same: “Little children, God loves you. Love him and one another.”

When asked why he kept repeating these Gospel words, St John said, “Because that’s what the Master kept saying.”

I came across this gem in my morning readings in The Word Among Us – July/August. And the thought struck me, “I am looking for gems and listening for God’s Word in my morning scripture readings. In turn, I hope that my Pause for Reflection provides the occasional gem for my readers.

It just happened to be our wedding anniversary this day when I heard the above words. There was more. Pope Francis said, “It is not easy to entrust oneself to God’s mercy, because it is an abyss beyond comprehension. But we must!”

And Pope Francis poses this conversation with God: “Oh Father, if you knew my life, you would not say that to me!”

“Why, what have you done?”

“Oh, I am a great sinner!”

“All the better! Go to Jesus: he likes you to tell him these things… He forgets, he kisses you, he embraces you, he simply says to you, neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

Pope Francis concludes, “That is the only advice he gives you.”

The following day the morning reflection from The Word Among Us posed the comparison between our evangelical mission and sending a message by post. We are empowered to speak as disciples only if we have the stamp of God’s Grace on our message.

Like the postage stamp, God’s stamp on the message will get it delivered. The challenge then is to prepare the best message possible and to live our

Rural crime stats a wakeup call

By Murray Mandryk There may yet be some good coming out of the recent rather bad rural Saskatchewan crime statistics.

One bad aspect is the rather healthy kick to the ego and the prideful notion that rural Saskatchewan is a safer place to be.

According numbers from the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics released last week, Saskatchewan’s rural crime rate was 36-per-cent higher than its urban crime rate in 2017.

The report suggests rural crime is growing in all three prairie provinces.

Alberta’s rural crime rate is now 38-per-cent higher than crime in that province’s urban centres while Manitoba’s rural crime rate is 42-per-cent higher than city crime.

Collectively, the three provinces accounted for nearly half the rural crime in country in 2017.

City crime in Saskatchewan cities is dropping, but it remains well above the national average.

According to what is called the total crime severity index, Saskatoon and Regina ranked first and third among 33 metropolitan areas across the country.

When it came to violent crime severity index that weighs crime types based on conviction rates and lengths of sentences, Saskatoon was third and Regina was fifth.

The good news is Regina was first in the nation a year early and saw an18-per-cent reduction in violent crime while Saskatoon saw a 2.3-per-cent decrease.

However, being in the top five most crime-ridden cities in the country is not exactly a vote of confidence. Saskatchewan cities have had a crime problem and the long-held notion that criminal activity isn’t a big problem s because it’s confined to certain neighbourhoods has worn thin.

We have a crime problem in this province.

And the notion of escaping the problem by moving to peaceful rural Saskatchewan is being challenged by the numbers.

For whatever progress there has been in in an overall six-per-cent reduction in violent crime, gun violence in Saskatchewan increased 47 per cent and 71 per cent in areas policed by the RCMP. As we know, those are mostly the smaller cities, towns and rural area that do not have their own police force.

This is no longer the rural Saskatchewan in which everyone could leave doors unlocked. Things have changed.

But seeing these numbers and recognizing them might actually be the wakeup call we all need.

The inability to recognize the problem has been a problem from many perspectives.

There was far too much hostility in the wake of the Gerald Stanley not-guilty verdict after the second-degree murder trial in the death of Colten Boushie.

Certainly, a few people acted inappropriately and posted online some horrific racists comments before and after the trial.

But what can’t be lost is that trial did become a local point for the legitimate fear. And separate from the testimony of the trial, the statistics show that fear is justifiable.

For years now, what the numbers show in the recent crime statistics has been the growing reality for those living in rural Saskatchewan. The sad reality is that among those most unwilling to accept his reality were those living in urban Saskatchewan and unaware of the growing rural crime problem.

Some of it has to do with the downturn in the rural economy partly driven by unemployment in the oilfields. Accompanied by the use of opioids, rural Saskatchewan is a target for thieves.

Complicating this problem is the growing distance between farms, making policing and neighbour watch programs less effective.

But some of this problem needs to be attributed to the long-standing issue of crime spilling over from nearby impoverished First Nations.

To the latter, rural and First Nations leaders need to get together and have serious solution-driven talks. The emotion after the Boushie death didn’t permit this, but maybe these numbers will.

In fact, these recent crime stats are a good place to start that conversation.

More than grasping at straws We were sitting poolside waiting to be called for our turn to swim with the dolphins. It was an unexpected bonus on what was itself an unexpected vacation. My husband had expressed a desire for years to swim with dolphins but any time we were in a location where it was an option we didn’t have the time to do it, but on this day it was about to hapMy Outlook Shelley Luedtke pen.

Before we entered the pool we were taken through a display on the health of our oceans. It wasn’t unexpected--nor was it unwelcome.

We all care about our oceans, right? So of course our interest in dolphins meant we were a willing audience to talk to about protecting our oceans.

There was nothing in the information we hadn’t heard many times before--but what I appreciated was that no company, corporation or product was portrayed as the villain, unlike so much of the contempt on display when discussing the impact of particular products. It’s striking how quickly some jump on board an idea based on what one group or movement says, but won’t take into consideration what others might have to add. Such is the zealousness with which we’ve approached the plastic straw.

Straws started out as an innovation by Sumerians-a gold tube inlaid with precious stones no less--to avoid the solid byproducts of fermentation. Versions made of stalks of grass and then paper followed and evolved (or devolved as some would argue) into the plastic type used everyday. The nature of the singleuse product means that millions of straws are ending up in our landfills and oceans and there has been a vigorous effort, particularly over the last decade, to change this.

There’s no doubt they are everywhere and each one typically gets used for just a few minutes before being discarded. What used to be seen as an item of convenience is now burdensome. Harmful.

When someone in the house isn’t feeling well you can be sure we break out the “bendy” straws, which I learned is actually called an articulated straw (yet somehow I can’t imagine my husband or kids having moaned for “a glass of apple juice and an articulated straw, please”). And isn’t the best part of any juice box poking that little straw through the foil? But now, more and more jurisdictions are implementing ordinances calling for bans of the item. It became law in Seattle 32 days ago.

Vancouver’s ban begins in 2019. Some fast food and coffee chains will phase them out over the next 4-16 months. A major hotel chain will provide them by request only, and a cruise line will offer paper straws, but by request only. But to what effect? Of the trash being cleaned up on our shores, straws are 7th on the list. Globally, straws account for 0.03% of that garbage. A concern to be sure, but at 0.03% of the problem how has it dominated so much of the conversation and activism?

When we are confronted by issues of an overwhelming breadth, it can be motivational to grab hold of a small practice to help the situation. What can we do about worldwide hunger? Purchase the fundraising song? Buy the t-shirt? Sure. But feeding our brothers and sisters should compel us to do more. Too much garbage in our oceans? While saying no to straws might make us feel good about our efforts, we are going to have to re-think how we live.

Of course every little bit helps, but if we really want to do something for the oceans it needs to be part of an overall approach to how we live. At the core of it is…stewardship. Taking care of what we have been given and being responsible for all we have.

I felt really good about the knowledge that the resort we were staying at did not hand out straws, yet didn’t blink an eye when our dolphin photo package was given to us in a plastic bag. Seriously?

If we take to heart our jobs as stewards of our stuff, our surroundings, and nature’s beauty under our care, we would be impacted not by a bandwagon effect but by trying to be the best caretaker we can of our resources and each other. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Top financial must dos for Millennials Millennials – a term used to describe people born between 1980 and 2000 along with Generation Y or the Echo Boom -- are expected to have the same impact as the Baby Boom generation on politics, the workplace, culture and business* — and, in fact, are destined to reshape our country and possibly the entire world.

Estevan Tower Wolves repeat at Harbourne Memorial baseball tournament

The defending champions from last year’s Saskota Baseball tournament the Estevan Tower Wolves, beat the Oxbow Chief’s 3-1 in the final game of this year’s tournament on July 29.

“It was really nice to win two years in a row. It really reaffirms that we feel like the best team in the league,” said Jolan Lingelbach, the player acting as team captain. “We knew this year it was going to be a three-horse-race between us, Carlyle, and Oxbow battling it out.”

The Tower Wolves new coach Tom Copeland, is president of the Saskota midget league,

and had approached the Wolves and offered them help with their defense training thinking the talented team could win a lot of games with some basic fine tuning. “It was a unanimous yes right away,” said Lingelbach.

The Wolves trained once a week throughout the year, and twice a week in the month leading up to the Saskota tournament.

“There are numerous guys (on the team) who have played in college baseball or had college offers,” said Lingelbach. “Like Dylan LaFrance, we have a lot of good player on our team.” Players return from college in the summer join back up with the Wolves for the Saskota play-off.

“We love to win, and think we have the skill to do so. We have a lot of fun out there, but we know when to put our heads down, and work hard, so we can get to the finals,” said Lingelbach.

The Tower Wolves are hosting the provincial tournament that is coming up August 10- 12 in Estevan this year. Lingelbach and his teammates are excited to have the games played on home turf, and hope to draw a big crowd of fans and supporters out the game to watch. “It’s always better with our fans at the game, come and watch some really good baseball. There are a lot of local teams with talented players,” said Lingelbach.

As in prior years, the Redvers Activity Centre Foundation sold tickets to raise money on behalf of the Redvers Activity Centre. Previously, the prize was a 3-minute shopping spree at one of the local grocery stores in Redvers. This year, the Foundation Board members decided to sell tickets for a chance to spend up to $500.00 worth of liquor at Murray’s Store in Redvers. The winner’s name was drawn on June 27th at the Annual General meeting. This year’s winner was Wayne Blezy of Redvers. On Friday, July 20th, Wayne Blezy picked up his winnings from Murray’s Store. Golf world watches as Tiger prowls again

Is this the week for No. 15?

Tiger Woods has been stuck on 14 major championships since 2008. On a June day a decade ago, Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in an 18-hole playoff for the U.S. Open title and it was almost a foregone conclusion that Woods would not only catch Jack Nicklaus for most major titles (18), but probably obliterate that number.

Twenty-two majors, 25, 30?

Oh, how things change. Woods went through a series of injuries, personal challenges (porn stars, divorce, back surgeries) and aging and 10 years have gone by since the ‘foregone conclusion’ turned into ‘fat chance.’

But the ‘chance’ is getting more likely in 2018 with every tournament outing. At this week’s PGA championship at Bellerive in St. Louis, Woods will be one of the favourites for the title and if he were to

cash in, the golf world would go crazy, anticipating a renewed run at Nicklaus’s 18 majors.

As late as last November, there was doubt Woods would be able to return to competitive golf. Fusion surgery on his back left his future in doubt, but when he finished ninth in December in the 18-golfer field at his own tournament, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, fans’ interest was piqued. He then racked up four top10s and three other top 25s leading up to July’s Open Championship, 2018’s third major.

It was at Carnoustie when he showed the world that while he may not be back to the Tiger Woods of total dominance, he is back to being competitive, and capable of winning any given week. At one point during the final round in Scotland, he held the outright lead before a double bogey on the 11th hole and a bogey on 12 sealed his T-6 fate.

So how did Woods feel after getting so close to major title No. 15?

“I know that it’s going to sting for a little bit here, but given where I was to where I’m at now, blessed,” Woods was quoted as saying on open.com.

Woods was ranked No. 656 in the world on Jan. 1 of this year, and

is now No. 50. He is 41st on the PGA Tour money list and 44th in Fed-Ex Cup points. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk will almost certainly choose him for the September battle in France against Great Britain-Europe and the people with the biggest smiles on their faces will be TV executives from CBS, whose ratings will be through the roof with Woods competing.

Is Woods back?

Part-way. He hasn’t shown he can win, but he has proven he can contend. That means Majors No. 15, 16, 17 and 18 are still in play. The golf world will be watching intently, starting this week.

Happy birthday to Jim McKellar who celebrated his 100th birthday on July 14 in Kisbey. He is Joan Hamilton’s father and has 5 children,9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He enjoys family and friends and resides at Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle.

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Marie-Antoinette Charles who passed away on July 17 at the age of 94 years. Her funeral mass was held at the Wawota town Hall on July 21 and interment in Dumas Cemetery. She was a school teacher, involved in her community and church and will be remembered fondly.

Sympathy also to the family and friends of

Wayne Hirtle who passed away on July 16 at the age of75 years. His family included wife, Gwen and Shane and Wendy (Ken Slade). He enjoyed his 5 grandsons, Shane and Jesse Hirtle, and Shea, Aiden and Brody Slade.His Funeral service was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Sunday, July 22 and interment was in the Wawota Cemetery.

Visiting with Raymond and Laurel Charles were granddaughters, Blake and Ryann from Surrey, B.C. They stayed for a week and are Geoff and Luann›s daughters.

Remembering what’s really important

By Linda Wegner While strolling through our local farmers’ market, I noticed a lapel pin for sale. Here’s how it read: “Hi, I can’t remember your name either.” I immediately tossed a couple of dollars in the bucket and brought it home, intending to wear it every day. I haven’t done that but I look at it regularly and console myself that I’m not the only one who forgets.

It’s really not that I forget the person or that I don’t recognize the face, it’s just that if they aren’t in their “usual

spot”, I have to mentally transfer them to my immediate presence. One comforting thought is that I’m rarely stuck on identities for more than a few minutes, sometimes only hours, or at most, a day. Just the tendency, however, makes me realize that age truly is starting to creep up on me. More importantly, however, is the keen understanding that I need to cultivate those things that really matter in my life. Names may temporarily elude me but relationships with people continue to be an important and blessed

part of my life.

Throughout Scripture we are reminded to that God never forgets: “God remembered Noah,” says the writer of Genesis; “Remember His marvelous works” exhorts the writer of 1 Chronicles; “remember my chains”, penned Paul, writing to those early Christians from his prison cell; and Peter, in defending his faith before those who wanted him to stop proclaiming Jesus Christ, wrote “then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said….”

There are times

when we forget the goodness of the Lord but how comforting to know that He never forgets us! “[The LORD answered] “Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.”

The Keith Olson Family had a busy last week.

On Saturday evening, Stacey Heffernan, Kate and Sarah of Regina, Jake and Carey Lamoureaux, Jack and Will , Cindy Olson and Morgan Buhr of Morinville, AB and Keith and Myrna Olson joined Kenton and Stacey Olson, Carter and Emmett at Kenosee Lake for a combined birthday party for Carter(June 22nd-10 years old) and Emmett(Aug.4th-8 years old) Cindy spent the next week visiting in the area while Morgan attended Kenosee Lake Bible Camp.

Cindy and Morgan returned home on Sunday.

Word has been received of the passing of Phylip Myers of Kingston, ON. He was the middle son of the late Earl and Jean Myers and a brother to John of Regina. He passed away on July 16 at the age of 71 years.

The Wawota Museum was a buzz of activity last Thursday when 19 children participated in the dinosaur hunt in the back yard.

They enjoyed juice boxes and dinosaur cookies.

I helped Shirley Corkish with this activity and was so impressed with the good manners and how those who found several dinosaurs shared with those who found none. A great group of children.

This coming week is the Ranch Rodeo/Heritage Days. Come out and enjoy the many activities planned. The committee starts to meet in January and spends a lot of time to bring you this event. Mxany people volunteer their time and money also. See you there.

Harry Raymond Farrow Aug. 27, 1926 - July 22, 2018

Our hearts are broken as the angels rejoice.

We, the family of Harry R. Farrow, are saddened to announce in his 92nd year, his peaceful passing in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 22, 2018.

Predeceased by all his siblings, (Arthur, Vivienne, Phyllis, Mildred, Evelyn and their spouses), Harry will be forever loved, and memories will be cherished by his wife of almost 67 years, Joyce; son Brian (Vicki), daughter Brenda (Steve); four grandsons, Jonathan (Jill), Michael (Janine), Curtis (Kristin), Chris (Danielle); two great grandchildren, Torin and Taylin and brother in law Ken (Verna).

We cannot give enough thanks and praise to the management and staff at Fillmore Health Centre who have cared for dad during his stay – they have all become part of our family.

Keeping with dad’s wishes, we celebrated Dad’s life at a graveside service on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stoughton Town Cemetery, Stoughton, Sask., followed by a gathering to visit and celebrate his life at the Stoughton Legion.

We would like to thank Dustin Hall at Hall Funeral Services in Estevan for his assistance.

Flowers are gratefully declined but donations in Dad’s memory would be most graciously accepted to assist the quality of life for those at the Fillmore Health Centre.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

On July 24 Ainsley Cowan accompanied her grandma Edel to Estevan where they spent some precious time shopping, visited and had quality time with her sisters Lacie and Kelsey while Grandma had an eye appointment. Then they visited with Uncle Murray, Aunt Fiona, Adam and Chrissy for a few moments before heading home.

This past week (July 24-29) was the Manitoba Thresherman’s Reunion at Austin, MB. Eleanor Harrison, Jim and Mary Boettcher our regular attendees once again participated in this event.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan left on Thursday, July 26 for Minot where Tim and Shelly attended the Cheap Trick play and Ainsley spent time with her grandparents Myron and Orlys. They visited with the Nilsen family and attended the Minot Fair on Friday. Tim returned home on Saturday with Ken and Diane Potapinski who had also attended the Minot fair and they attended the Dierks Bently concert on Friday evening. Shelly and Ainsley returned home on Monday.

Gray and Edel Cowan spent the afternoon on Sunday, July 29 at the Red Barn near Kenosee where they met up and visited with family members, enjoyed touring the displays and listening to the music. It was an enjoyable afternoon spent with friends.

Colby and John Potapinski, who plays ball with the Redvers A’s team, played senior ball in the league playoff Harbourne tournament at Kenosee Lake this past weekend (July 27-29). They were unfortunate to lose out in the semi-finals to the Estevan Wolves and they finished in third place. The Redvers A’s will now play in the Provincial Tier II senior ball playoffs which are hosted by Carnduff in August 13-15. Their games will be played on both Carnduff and Redvers diamonds with the first game on Friday night in Carnduff and then two games in Redvers on Saturday. Good luck boys in the Provincial games.

I was notified by friends (and later saw) that my news column never got printed in the July 27 issue – guess it’s still out in cyberspace somewhere, so decided to include that week’s news now.

Mark and Cindy Beriault received word that their new grandchild, Izadora Daniele Wilson arrived safely on July 17, 2018. She is a new baby daughter for Brandy and Kale Wilson of Kennedy, SK and a new sibling for Persephonee, Anastasia and Ryker. Congratulations to everyone.

Chad and Samantha Peet and boys Hudson and Lincoln spent the weekend (July 19-22) at Preeceville, SK visiting with her parents Bryan and Lori Hull and her siblings. They also attended her youngest

brother, Kenton’s wedding on Saturday, July 21.

On July 20 Margaret Peet left for Regina where she visited with her mother Claire Germain, sister, Pauline Craggs and sister, Edna who is visiting from Chillowack, BC. They all joined their brother Maurice and his wife Cindy at Regina Beach and enjoyed a day visiting and boating. Margaret returned home at the being of the following week.

Jeff Cowan, Regina spent the weekend (July 2022) in the Alida area. He attended a class reunion which was held at the farm of Grant Barber renewing old acquaintances. He also spent time visiting his parents, Gray and Edel as well as with his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley at the dam.

Grant Barber and Jenny Riersgard hosted the 1988 Class Reunion at the Barber farm over the weekend (July 20-22). There were 12 grads out of 42 who attended the reunion, with a final count of 19 in attendance. They traveled from near and far – the furthest was from San Diego. It was reported that a great weekend was had by all.

You have now all likely heard and/or read about the Big News around Alida I am sure. On July 13, 2018 Three Star Trucking Ltd. was sold and the company will no longer be known by that name. They were sold to Vertex Resource Group Ltd. Best wishes and good luck to the new owners, we welcome you to our little community.

Well folks – How does your garden grow?? My garden is so so – I am not able to water so I depend solely on the weatherman to be generous. And thankfully we have received a fair amount of moisture (even if it was a little slow in coming). A lot of the little seeds did not germinate, but what has is doing fairly well now with the little showers we’ve received. I’ve had some nice cucumbers for eating, even peas to eat right off of the vines (that is when they taste the best). The pumpkin patch is looking good now – with lots of blooms as well as the watermelon, cantaloupe and spaghetti squash all have their share of blooms too – so here’s hoping for lots of produce to come. Potatoes are really looking good too. Nice to see good results for the time one puts into the garden. Speaking of growth – the fields are also looking good now and some are even starting to turn color. Hopefully they will be plentiful for the farmers – and before one knows it – the busy season of harvesting will be around the corner. Let’s hope the “Big White Combine” does not pay us a visit in the near future. We are nearing the end of July and will then be welcoming August. This for Alida will be exciting as the Gervais Wheels Museum will be holding a two-day auction sale. And of course the long

The team player we are seeking reports directly to the Public Works Foreman. The position involves duties relating to general maintenance, operation and service of municipal equipment and infrastructure and may include operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems. August 4th - 6th long weekend Drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40% of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways. In 2018, the Canadian Safe Boating Council along with our enforcement and Search & Rescue agencies are also concerned about the potential impact of legalization of recreational marijuana and the increase in use and abuse of prescription narcotics on boating incidents and fatalities.

To raise awareness and reduce impairment-related deaths, the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC)

Ooh la la!!

is launching year 6 of an initiative called “Operation Dry Water” It’s goal is to stress the importance of Boating Sober.

With the summer boating season in high gear, the August 4th – 6th long weekend is the perfect time to remind Canadian boaters about the risks of impaired boating. Combined with sun, wind, waves and the rocking motion of the boat, the effects of alcohol and drugs on the water can be greatly increased.

“The CSBC, its partners and sponsors would like, through this and our other initiatives, to raise attention to the problem of boating under the influence and to remind boaters to boat sober,” stated John Gullick, Chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Operation Dry Water will focus on the potential risks of impaired boating, and remedies that are currently in place to discourage it.

Federal statutes dictate that boaters can be charged with Impaired Operation of a Vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if they are found to be impaired. Under current and proposed legislation, human-powered craft are not excluded from the definition of a vessel and, so, are subject to the same penalties. Some provinces have enacted legislation where impaired boating can affect your automobile driving privileges.

Operation Dry Water is aimed at reducing the number of impairment-related accidents and fatalities on the water while fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use while boating. The end goal? To achieve safer and more enjoyable recreational boating.

During the August long weekend, a number of Police agencies will be offering the media the chance to ride along while they conduct on-water vessel safety checks. Please contact your local detachment to see if they are offering this opportunity.

This initiative is made possible through support of Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety.
