Southwestern Manitoba quickly becoming an art hub
By Vern May Ask someone to name the first thing that comes to mind when you say rural Manitoba and it’s unlikely that they would identify our region as a nerve center for the arts. However, in a number of communities there is a growing migration to and appreciation for arts of various disciplines and it is breathing new life into century old community store fronts in the process. Hamiota is home to the Heritage Arts Centre, which stands as the home base for the Mid-West Arts Council. The building itself was created from the shell of a 1905 bank to develop a warm and inviting exhibition space. The Arts Centre already houses the Hamiota and District Photo by Glen Kirby Archives, the Hamiota Square Dance Club and Kathleen Lagasse shows her latest work-in-progress, in her home studio. “My dream is to become the local Art Club which the art hub of Souris,” Lagasse on her goal to open an art studio in Souris. meets weekly. A bountiful harvest of art continued from page 1
Situated in the CPR Heritage Centre, the group hosts exhibits throughout the year with new work on display each month. Locally hosted workshops include painting, drama, quilting, photography and more. Their programming offers a great opportunity for people to try out a new craft or skill, including programs for youth. The Arts Mosaic also presents five concerts per year, hosted at the historic Aud Theatre offering a wide array of talent to rural audiences. The 1894 Art Centre in Boissevain was developed through some unique circumstances. Casey and Christina Guenther returned to Manitoba after spending three years abroad in India. Purchasing a vacant legacy building in the heart of the community, they developed the second floor as a suite for themselves and their young family. Once situated in their new home, Casey began to develop the main floor for his graphic design business. Recognizing an opportunity, they developed an arts centre around Casey’s work space, opening the doors to the public in 2012. The centre has become a host site for several exhibitions as well as art classes, spurring the development of a local artists’ co-op in the border town. A combination art gallery and teaching space is also being developed in Souris, with a grand opening scheduled for Saturday, September 26. Kathleen Lagasse has ignited an art frenzy in the community over the past year which has started by teaching classes in oil on canvas from the basement of her home. With her classes expanding to more than 40 students travelling from six surrounding communities, it was time to migrate to a larger and more permanent space. Lagasse’s studio of fine art has been under development on Crescent Avenue in one of the original buildings of the Sowden block (and site of the community’s first jail – the cell still stands in the basement). The gallery features the work of Lagasse and other local artisans, not restricted just to painters but art and crafts of all styles. Souris is also well served by the efforts of the Souris & District Arts Council, which manages the community’s live performing arts schedule throughout the year, hosting a pleasing variety of performers. Those interested in the arts as a patron, or to get hands on to explore their untapped potential as an artist are encouraged to reach out to the local arts groups in their communities to learn more about the programs and how best to foster ongoing development and awareness of rural access to arts and culture.

A beauty that lasts
By Connie Schwalm What is beautiful? The question will always get you an answer...but you won’t likely ever hear the same answer twice. The truth is, you can look at ‘beautiful’ a million times and never see it. That’s because TRUE beauty isn’t about surfaces. Real ‘beauty’ is a facet of the human spirit. Real ‘beauty’ lives underneath our skin. Brooke Widdup is a beautiful young woman. The 15-year-old Grade 10 student from Kipling, SK recently became one of 90 finalists in the ‘Miss Teen Canada Globe’ held in Toronto! She won the title of Miss Teen Saskatchewan Globe 2015 and then went on to win Miss Teen Canada Globe 2015 Third Princess. Miss Teen Canada Globe 2015 was won by Carly Wheelans, First Princess is Caylin Rutherford, Second Princess is Britney Collins. Brooke wears her new crown and title well. She also carries herself with a degree of style and poise that belies her years. She admits that these are...in part...skills that she learned while at the competition. “They gave us lots of training,” she says. “They taught us how to walk well...how to do our make-up and hair.” But the most valuable training she received at the pageant, Brooke notes, involved helping her find the inner beauty that is her strength. “They taught us how to do interviews. They also gave us training on how to talk about our platforms...the charities that we wanted to support.” Brooke credits both this training...and the experience itself...for helping her find a new confidence. “I wasn’t confident before the pageant at all. This experience has really boosted my self-esteem. I view myself as beautiful...as every girl should.” For Brooke the pageant also provides a clear example of how beauty thrives amidst diversity. “It doesn’t matter how much you weigh. It doesn’t matter what your race or sexual preference is. The pageant is about inner beauty...not outward beauty,” she notes. Along with her new-found confidence, Brooke discovered other facets of her own beauty at the pageant. “Along the way, we were all given smaller ‘titles’ as well. I was chosen as ‘Miss Peacemaker’...because I was always trying to keep all the girls calm and keep them from arguing.” Along with her crown, Brooke also came home from Toronto with friendships that she knows will last well past her one year ‘reign’ as Miss Teen Canada Globe
Third Princess. “It wasn’t really competitive at all. We were always helping each other out. I did three other girls’ hair before the regional competitions. I did that before I did my own hair and make-up...and I wasn’t the only one doing things like that,” she notes. “I grew very close to the other girls in my age category. I made friendships that I know will last a lifetime. I also became very close to the three girls I was rooming with as well.” Brooke’s willingness to put others ahead of herself, and work toward a common goal no matter what the circumstances, is another aspect of her beauty. It also shapes her attitude towards volunteer work and the charities that she intends to support. “I hope to get more involved in my school and my community,” she says. “I want to support the fight against MS. I’ll be taking part in the Terry Fox Run in Saskatoon. I’m also involved in the Lions Foundation ‘Walk for Dog Guides’. I want to raise money for charities and help out as best I can.” When asked if there is one thing that she would like to use her title to accomplish...Brooke says this: “I just want to help out...and I’d like to try and get other people to become more involved in the community as well. Brooke’s journey may not have ended with this title. “I’ll be moving on to an international pageant sometime this year,” she points out, “possibly in the Dominican.” She will also be spending some time this year ‘recruiting’ other girls to take part in the competition next year. “I’m supposed to recruit 5 other girls to take part in the pageant,” she says. “It’s such a good experience. It will change your life, it really makes you feel good about yourself. You meet so many different people. And it encourages you to really think about different issues and want to get involved. It’s a lot of work, and I know it’s not for everyone but, I’d encourage anyone to try it out. It’s been one of my best experiences.” Brooke is quick to acknowledge the love and support she has received throughout her pageant experience. “I owe a lot to my Grandma. She has helped me so much. My Dad helped me out a lot, both with encouragement and financial help. And my Mom is just so proud and happy for me.” The kind of ‘beauty’ we see on magazine covers and commercials never lasts very long. But inside this young woman, a beauty lives that most certainly will only grow along with her. And while the crown and title she has brought home represents a significant achievement... it will certainly be a ‘first’ among many.
The brightest way to whole home comfort.

By Vern May Close your eyes and consider this job title – “Professional Wrestler”. No doubt it creates a very visceral impression in your mind – positive or negative – about how someone in that line of work looks, dresses and conducts themselves in a social setting. It is one of those occupations which carries a strong stereo-type which has been ingrained over generations of popular culture. It’s likely that the first image in your mind was male. It’s certain that some professions carry strong gender associations. When it comes to professional sports, this is an arena which is largely identified as a male-dominated industry. So much so, that when a strong female athlete emerges to make a name for herself such as we’ve seen over the past year with UFC’s Rhonda Rousey, it turns heads. In North America, the sport of professional wrestling has experienced an awakening when it comes to gender equality and the ladies with talent are finding that there is now an opportunity to break into the main event Bambi Hall, courtesy of SHIMMER Wrestling roles previously reserved for their male counterparts. The growing recognition of the talent and drive of this division of athletes has grown to support a number of all-women’s events in select cities across the country. With this in mind, the Winnipeg-based Canadian Wrestling’s Elite is visiting nine communities in the coming weeks with an all ladies 3rd Annual roster that will re-shape public opinion about professional wrestling. In Montreal, Northern Championship Wrestling has Friday, October 2 developed a dedicated brand for its women’s division branded “Femmes Fatales”, in Vancouver, All Star Melita Legion Hall • Happy Hour 5:30 • Dinner 6:30 Wrestling has launched “Girls Gone Wrestling”, and in Supper by Cam’s Catering • Entertainment to follow Speaker: Del Pedrick Chicago, there is an established superpower of female LIVE NHL HAT AUCTION professional athletics under the banner of “Shimmer”. School zone safety the focus for September
Motorists reminded to slow down and exercise caution Look out for children in school zones as if they were your own. That’s the advice of former school bus driver Andy Schwindt, a current manager of Warner Transportation, the busing contractor for the Regina Public School Board. Schwindt knows firsthand the potential dangers of school zones: motorists speeding, disregarding cross walks, driving unsafely around buses, or simply exercising a lack of attention behind the wheel. “I’ve seen it all too often where an impatient driver endangers a child’s life by failing to stop at a school zone cross walk with flashing red lights or fails to use caution by dangerously manoeuvring around a slowing or stopping school bus,” said Schwindt. “There is the potential for something bad to happen every day because of the way motorists are driving through school zones

and aren’t watching or paying attention.” Throughout the month of September, police will be watching for traffic violations in and around school zones, including drivers speeding or failing to respect signage, yield for pedestrians, or obey crossing guards or school bus cross arms and flashing lights. “We all play a role in keeping our children safe and school zones require your full attention,” said Schwindt. “Drivers need to understand where they are, and ultimately, what could happen when travelling through school zones.” In 2014*, there were 40 collisions in school zones in the province, resulting in 15 injuries. Motorists are reminded of the following tips to ensure children are protected from harm as they go to and from school: · Slow down and exercise additional caution when in a

school zone. · Avoid all distractions. · Speed limits vary by municipality, but are marked with regulatory reflective signs. In some areas of the province, reduced speeds remain in effect evenings and weekends, not just during regular school hours and some all year long. Check with your local municipal office if you’re unsure of the rules in your community. · Respect busing lanes and exercise the utmost caution when approaching or manoeuvring around school buses. In school bus loading zones, obey all signs and signals and watch for children who may not know the rules of crossing the street. “Drivers should be aware that a school bus can and will stop at any time,” said Schwindt. “If a bus is stopped, it is for a reason. Slow down and pay attention to what could be or is happening around the bus.” Fines for speeding in school zones start at $140 and increase for every km/h over the posted speed limit. Penalties for speeding in school zones include three demerit points under SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition program. Photo speed enforcement is in use in select school zones in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw. Posted signs clearly indicate the presence of photo speed enforcement in these zones. For more information on driving safely in school zones, visit SGI’s website. Follow SGI on Facebook and Twitter for tips on how #wecandrivebetter.
