The industry is looking to the future and with the average age of Canadian producers assessed at 57, they wonder what the scene may look like a decade from now as some of the current producers consider retirement. According to Statistics Canada, only 9.9% of farmer operators are below the age of 40 years. Twenty-eight-year-old Chris Semeschuk gave up a career in agricultural banking to move back to Manitoba and join his father on the family farm south of Brandon. He knows he’s in the minority in his new career but for him, the possibilities are endless. See story on page 2 Photo|Darci Semeschuk

Are farmers becoming an endangered species? Vern May Submitted
After generations of family farming on the prairies, the industry doesn’t look like it used to. For many families, the upcoming generation has weighed their options and has decided to pursue careers off the farm. How will that impact the next generation of the industry in Manitoba and across the country? That was among one of the most active discussions at the National Farmer’s Union (NFU) conference held in Portage la Prairie last week. A century ago, more than 30% of the Canadian population was employed through the agriculture industry. However, advances in machinery have increased capacity and have edged out small operations so much so that it is estimated that less than 2% of the work-
force nationally remains in the ag sector directly. The industry is looking to the future and with the average age of Canadian producers assessed at 57, they wonder what the scene may look like a decade from now as some of the current producers consider retirement. With the next generation of farm families not sliding in to succeed their elders, where will new farmers come from and how can we attract them to the opportunity? There has been some encouraging trends in recent years as a study focusing on new producers under the age of 40 shows that 68% of this age group that are new to the industry have not grown up on a farm themselves. They have been drawn to the industry through fears of growing food insecurity and seeing an opportunity to participate in sustainable practices that

will contribute to protect the environment. With changes in the industry, these emerging producers are more interested in direct to consumer sales through farmer’s markets and farm gate sales as well as community-supported agriculture initiatives. In many cases, they are at the forefront of the local food movement that is gaining traction in many locales. While the ag sector presents potentially more opportunities through emerging markets and changing appetites of consumers, there are some signiicant obstacles. The challenges that impede new producers from jumping into the market may be the same that have dissuaded fourth and ifth generations of farm families from taking the risk in the current climate. Compared to Ontario where the average farm size is 223 acres, in Manitoba the threshold sits at 1,000 acres. That creates a huge challenge for both affordability and access to inancing for a

new producer. This combined with the uncertainty and low proitability of the industry creates a formidable challenge for those looking to break in to the business. Research is actively underway in both Manitoba and Ontario to create pathways for new farmers to enter the industry. The indings are being compared with international research as well to determine how the ag industry can best support its own future. However, there are some initiatives that have proven to be effective. Farmer to farmer mentorship has been identiied as a great start to help with the knowledge transfer from experienced, multi-generational producers to the newcomers to the game. Growing support for direct marketing opportunities is also helping to create scalable opportunities to encourage new producers to start small and grow as they become more proitable and experienced. cant areas for discussion at present is looking at ways to incentivize landowners to rent land to new farmers. Many current producers haven’t considered their succession plan if the next generation within their own family isn’t taking over the farm. Among the producers on hand at the NFU conference, very few hands were in the air when asked who in the room had identiied a succession strategy for their own operation. By renting to new farmers and encouraging their start instead of holding out for the best price to outright sell the land, may open doors for those with an interest to grow, but without the inancial backing to get started on a large scale. “It’s important for new farmers to realize that you don’t need to own land to farm,” says Lydia Carpenter, who with her partner Wian Prinsloo operates LunaField Farm at Dunrea. “In fact, it’s probably less proitable if you do.”
Prinsloo and Carpenter are among the emerging generation of farmers that have come into the industry without a family connection to the industry. They are focused on a pasture-raised and grassfed livestock that includes chicken, beef, pork, and lamb. By renting from an area landowner, they have been able to gain valuable experience and expand their operation at a comfortable pace. Through direct marketing via their farm’s website lunaieldfarm.com they are able to connect with consumers and build their business. For others who may be interested to explore a career in agriculture, the NFU website is a great place to begin your investigation. With the latest on policy, issues and topics addressing both the challenges and opportunities of the farming industry, the NFU hopes to encourage and support current and future producers. Their wealth of resources can be found at www.nfu.ca.

Aspen Grove Campground, located off the Trans-Canada Highway between Virden and Oak Lake, has been renovating since the new owners took over seven years ago. On-site owners, Maria and Amar Boudehane; along with off-site owners Karin and Chris Grifin have worked tirelessly to make improvements to Aspen Grove Campground. The over 30 year-old campground has been completely modernized, and over the last ive years has had two new areas of campsites added. The 200 campsites have been updated to 30 and 50 amp power, with the exception of three sites for tenting. Sewer and bathrooms have also been renovated; and
owners implemented a recycling program the irst year they took over. A new mini golf attraction, with 18 holes and beautiful landscaping, has been added to the campground. After a tornado took out the play structure and cook shack, owners rebuilt both. The cook shack is available to be rented for events such as anniversaries/family reunions. The owners also host potluck suppers and pancake breakfasts at the shack. The cook shack, which when seen is anything but a shack, is located next to the play structure and common area. It boasts electricity; two grills, a BBQ, and Barkman bar & counter tops. The structure itself is well-built with a cement foundation. The play structure went

from being a wooden out dated structure, to an up to date steel structure. Next to the play structure is a beautifully landscaped sitting area with stone benches. Beside this is a heated 20 foot by 50 foot pool, with a newly designed brick lounging area around the pool. The campground has a volleyball court, a mini basketball court with rubber looring, a large outdoor checkers game, horse shoes pits, and walking trails. The convenience store has everything needed for camping, from groceries, BBQs to wood. In addition there is giftware and hard ice cream. A 24 hour laundry room is available next door to the convenience store. The camping fee includes everything except wood, Wi Fi, and mini golf; which are minimal prices. The campground is located on 10 to 15 acres, of the 350 acres belonging to the owners. Dirt bikes and quads are not allowed in the campground for children’s safety. Maria Boudehane, onsite owner, says “We are one of the best kept secrets in this area. We are a family run campground with

Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin recalled The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) is issuing a public recall of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin in the 1.14L size.
The recall is being issued because the actual alcohol content in the product does not match the alcohol declared on the label. SLGA has advised the province’s
approximately 700 liquor retailers to remove the product from store shelves immediately. Bacardi Canada, the product distributor, advised that the affected
lot L16304w has alcohol content by volume of 77 per cent rather than the stated content of 40 per cent. Therefore, the product is not safe for con-
sumption. Consuming a product with an alcohol content of 77 per cent could cause serious illness. The product lot code can be found on the bottom of the back
side of the distinct blue glass bottle. Anyone with the affected product (L16304w) can return it to any liquor retailer for a full refund.
When you use the money you receive wisely, it can pay big dividends over time. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your refund. Invest in an RRSP. Use your tax refund to get an early start on your annual Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. The sooner you get money into your RRSP, the sooner you take advantage of tax-deferred growth. Make up for missed RRSP contributions. You’re allowed to make up for missed contributions going back to 1991. Using your refund will increase your pool of tax-sheltered assets, potentially boost retirement wealth and create
a larger tax deduction this year or in future years. Pay down or eliminate high-interest debt. Use your refund to pay down credit card balances, personal loans or other expensive debt. You’ll reduce interest costs. Pay down your RRSP loan. If you borrowed money to make an RRSP contribution, pay down the loan as soon as your refund arrives. Pay down the mortgage. Every dollar you put toward your mort-
gage principal is a dollar on which you won’t pay interest for the next 5, 10 or even 25 years. Contribute to an RESP. Put money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children or grandchildren. An RESP is an excellent tax-deferred vehicle to save for postsecondary education. Spend a bit on yourself. It won’t hurt to spend a little of your refund on yourself. After all, you have to have some fun in your financial life. But try to limit
it to 10% to 20%. Now here’s the bad news. You don’t really want a refund. That money you get back from the CRA every year is like an interest-free loan to the government. By paying more in taxes throughout the year than you should, you’ve let Ottawa use your money. Plus, you loose out on potential investment returns until your overpaid taxes are returned. If you regularly re-
ceive a refund, consider having the income tax deducted from your regular pay cheque reduced. Obtain a copy of Canada Revenue Agency Form T1213 (Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source) at your local tax office or on the CRA’s Internet site. Submit the form to the CRA, which will send you a letter of authority allowing your employer to reduce deductions during the year. Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund

Many Canadians look forward to an annual tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It’s a mini-windfall-and it’s tempting to spend the money on something frivolous. But there are other uses for your refund.
