Cornerstone Theatre always hosts a fresh take on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” tickets are on sale now at The Pearl Boutique in Carlyle. Continued from page 1 From the long standing tradition of the Cornerstone Theatre’s imaginative retellings of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to the absolutely delicious food found along Main Street in the evenings to markets and art displays around town, the Carlyle Dickens’ Festival is widely celebrated. Another fun activ-
ity around town includes the High Tea found at the United Church where those stopping in have the choice of donning a hat from the Victorian era to embrace the spirit of the Festival, while servers dressed in period-pieces hustle to and fro ensuring an enjoyable stop for a refreshing cup of tea. Live music and an opportunity to warm up if
cold comes through stopping at Fezziwig’s Pub, the bottom level of the Carlyle Memorial Hall, where many local talents can be found taking the stage. Photos with Santa will also be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Fezziwig’s Pub throughout the day, keep an eye out for more information on what time Santa will be there for photos. One of the best experiences of the festival can be walking down Main Street in the evening where loaded baked potatoes, minidoughnuts, turkey legs, and chowders await the
palate. By timing it right you’ll be left enjoying a warm meal as you watch the holiday themed parade floats roll through town. Held through snow, rain, and shine in the past, Dickens Festival is an effort put forth by the event committee and is helped to become a success through the wonderful community spirit it encourages. The Dickens Committee is excited again for the event and encourages those who haven’t experienced the excitement to stop in for a fun family weekend in Carlyle.

New rink for Pipestone By Dolores Caldwell On July 13, 2013, when “tornado-like” winds swept through Pipestone, many community members believed it was the end of their much-loved rink. In the fall of 2013, Randy Henuset, RM of Pipestone councilor, called a community meeting to discuss rebuilding the rink. The original steering committee consisted of Mike Robertson, Randy Henuset, Kelly Flannery, Teresa Turnbull, Raymond Revet and Wade Flannery. Today, the RM of Pipestone is pleased to announce that the Pipestone Rink is near completion with flooding of the natural ice to commence within the next couple of weeks. Contractors of this project included: Nixon Builders of Virden, Prairie Electric from Brandon, Infinity Heating & Plumbing from Brandon, C&R Sheetmetal
from Brandon, and Crane Steel and building materials were supplied by South End Lumber from Brandon. The dimensions of the new rink are 90’ x 185’ with an attached restaurant lounge and waiting room of 88’ x 52’. The waiting room itself is L-shaped and has about 36’ of full glass for viewing. “Initially, the facility will be volunteer run until we see how much usage there will be,” explained Robertson. Gillian Robertson has leased the restaurant/lounge from the RM on a fixed monthly rate and has named it Piperock Café and Grill. “The restaurant has been open for about a week. Everyday has been busy; in fact, on Friday and Saturday, it was a full capacity (79 people),” said Robertson. “The steak pit is very popular.” Continued on page 6

New rink for Pipestone Continued from page 5 According to June Greggor, CAO of the RM of Pipestone, the replacement insurance policy is just under $1.6 million. The cost of the tables and chairs were not covered by insurance, so the rink board has taken a loan from the RM for $12,000, repayable over 10 years. The new rink board consists of Raymond Revet (chair), Mike Robertson, Kelly Flannery, Danille Nicholson and Melanie Vinck. “We will be having a meeting shortly to discuss fees; any large scale
bookings of hockey teams, etc., will be done through the Recreation Director, said Robertson. “There has been interest from Virden Minor Hockey, said Tara Cowan, Pipestone-Albert Recreation Director. Bookings can be done through Tara at 204-8773768. Whether you enjoy public skating, a shinny game or you are an enthusiastic spectator, the new rink will be a great place to meet with friends and will certainly be an asset to the RM of Pipestone.

Cornerstone Theatre to present “A Christmas Carol: The Real Story” this December By Kelly Running Cornerstone Theatre is at it again. Each year the Cornerstone Theatre takes “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens and adds a new dynamic spin to their performance. In the past it has taken on a western theme, has been true to the original, and much more. This year the production will take place in the 21st century with the classic tale taking on a bit more humour than usual with “A Christmas Carol: The Real Story.” “It follows the basic Dickens’ play up to a point and then we veer off considerable,” Don Carter a
member of Cornerstone Theatre said. “This year we don’t have a Tiny Tim, we have an Ugly Tim, so he’s not ill or dying.” Ugly Tim is simply unfortunate looking and this plays into the script. “It’s set in today’s time period, but we do drift back at certain points,” Carter explained. “There’s a lot in Dickens that we haven’t used, so we’re doing some of that. The group compiled ideas and put the script together last winter, while interest was drummed up three weeks ago with parts being given out two weeks ago. “Lane Easton is playing

Scrooge this year,” Carter said. “He has an unbelievable voice.” “We have five new voices this year and everyone has a very good voice who sings, Megan [McAuley] and Jessica [Shirley-Dormuth] both have lovely voices and they sing together at one point, which is just beautiful.” In total Carter says there are approximately 20 people involved with the production this year and that it is expected to be a fantastic show as always. This year’s musical directors are Dianne Twietmeyer and Michele Amy, who according to Carter are, “the two most creative women I’ve ever met. They look at something and see it in a completely different way, they can come up with something that you never thought to do that way.” This year the audience will be treated to a variety of tunes, both new and old, to enjoy.

CornerstoneTheatre: This year the Cornerstone Theatre group is presenting “A Christmas Carol: The Real Story,” which again takes the Charles Dickens’ classic novel with a unique twist. The stage director this year is Colleen Easton who is bringing the production to life. The production will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. following the Dickens Festival parade. A Sunday
matinee will be hosted on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. Tickets are currently onsale at The Pearl Boutique, which is located on Main Street in Carlyle across from the Memorial Hall, or by contacting (306) 4534488.
“We have a busload of women coming down, 56 for both Friday and Saturday nights, and it’s filling quickly, so get your tickets as soon as you can because it will sell out for sure,” Carter says.
Decline in Snowy Owl population By Brandi Pollock A snowy owl is defined as “a large northern owl that breeds mainly in the Arctic tundra, the male being entirely white and the female having darker markings.” This fall in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, a record number of snowy owls have been brought into Wildlife rescue centres. The owls couldn’t look after themselves and needed care, which the rescue centers provided. Fifteen snowy owls across Manitoba have been taken to Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre in Iles des Chenes, and eight from Saskatchewan have been taken to Healing Ha-
ven Wildlife Rescue facility, half an hour north of Meadow Lake. These emaciated owls were dying from dehydration and starvation. Both Manitoba and Saskatchewan can agree that this is the most snowy owls they have taken to rescue centres for many years. “This is very unusual,” Dan Diawol, the director of the Manitoba centre, said in an interview with CBC News. Last year in
Cherokee
Manitoba only three snowy owls were brought into the rescue centre. Diawol believes that the spike of dying snowy owls could boil down to a snowy owl population boom this year in their

northern breeding grounds. Snowy owls in Manitoba could be dying off because of the circle of life. James Duncan, an owl biologist with Manitoba Conservation, told CBC News, “Every number of years they have a great reproductive year up north, and they provide a larger number of young than they normally do because lemmings are in great supply.” A lot of the snowy owls that haven’t made it have been young and don’t adapt as well as the older owls. Duncan said, “It’s obviously due to a lack of food somewhere or somehow, we’re not quite sure exactly yet, but it can be a balance of high populations of the owls and low populations of small rodents.” After the Christmas holidays, and a survey, Ducan will know if this is the answer to the dying owls. Saskatchewan La Ronge Conservation Service Inspector, Daryl Minter, has a different idea of what’s going on. Minter said to 650 CKOM, “[He] speculates this past summer’s northern Saskatchewan fires may have damaged the birds’ respiratory system and prevented them from hunting.” The snowy owls at Healing Haven Rescue Centre will be released this spring.

FINDING THE RIGHT RIDE QUICK TIPS FOR YOUR NEXT VEHICLE PURCHASE On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the most painful) how would you rate your last car buying experience? We hear all the time about how people would rather get their teeth pulled at the Dentist versus buying a vehicle...Ouch! Well here are some tips on how to make your next vehicle purchase a little less painful!
#1 – CHOOSING THE RIGHT VEHICLE...FOR YOU!
-
Don’t let the Salesman or Manager push you into a new vehicle that you don’t want just because they have it on their lot. We can pull new inventory from virtually every dealership across Canada. Why should you settle for anything less than what YOU want?
-
Read reviews online about the vehicle you’re interested in, ask around with friends and family about how they like theirs and about their experience with the dealership you are dealing with. Technology, Social Media in particular, makes it easy to gather that information so you can make a well informed decision.
-
Determine your budget and STICK TO IT! Don’t be pressured into paying more than you’re comfortable with.
#2 – WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE AT THE DEALERSHIP
-
Perform an initial inspection on the vehicle, make sure it has what you are looking for. This is especially true when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle because we will be doing the same inspection review on your potential trade in.
-
Ask about financing, extended service contracts and insurance coverage. It’s important to know your options. A lot of people don’t realize that the dealership offers the same rates as your lending institution and we set up the pre-authorized payments to come right out of your account automatically. It literally takes 10 minutes to collect some general information. It’s quick, easy and doesn’t require taking any time off work because we can do it over the phone.
-
Make sure you ask lots of questions about Customer Service. What is the dealerships labor rate? What does the dealer do for you when your vehicle is in for service? Do they offer a courtesy vehicle? Or do they just shuttle you around town? Or worse yet, make you rent a vehicle if yours is going to be laid up for a couple of days.
#3 – NEGOTIATING
-
WE EXPECT YOU TO SHOP OUR NUMBER! You will find that by simply stating you’re shopping at 2 other dealers before getting a quote from us, you will save a lot of time and energy in the negotiation process.
-
Always ask what the dealership fees are. Some dealers out there are getting crazy with their fees, always ask what your closing costs are. If they happen to change when you go to sign the papers, call them on it!
These are a few quick tips on what to do when you purchase your next vehicle. At Woodworth Dodge, the vast majority of our clientele is repeat/referral which tells you that we take care of our valued customers on a daily basis. You’re more than a Sale to us, we’re not after breaking volume records or having to sell X amount of vehicles every month because if we buy into that high pressure philosophy, ultimately the Customer loses and we don’t want that. Remember, at Woodworth Dodge, we genuinely make it worth your drive.

Arcola Optimists welcome Nashville duo ‘The Jeffersons’ for Country Christmas concerts By Lynne Bell Now that Arcola’s historic MacMurray Theatre is almost completely restored, the Arcola Optimist Club is hosting the community’s first-ever Country Christmas concert, starring Nashville recording artists, The Jeffersons. The duo is made up of Canadian country star Lisa Brokop and her husband, singersongwriter, Paul Jefferson, who will be performing in Arcola at The Mac on Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5. Glen Lawson of the Arcola Optimists says, “We’ve got a little bit more to do on the outside of the theatre and the last major thing is the siding. We’ve got a few things to do on the inside, but we’re excited to bring A Country Christmas to The Mac.” Billed as one of Music Row’s “most exciting and creative new acts,” The Jeffersons have released a self-titled album as well as an EP of Christmas standards. Brokop grew up in Surrey, B.C., and says, “All I wanted to do from the time I was seven or eight years old was to go to Nashville and be a country singing star.” By 1995, she was signed to Garth Brooks’s label Capitol Nashville and released her album ‘Every Little Girl’s Dream.’ Eventually, she recorded with record labels Columbia Nashville and later with Curb Records Nashville; and in spite of these career upheavals, Brokop remains grateful. “Fortunately, I’ve been able to stay here in Nashville and go back to Canada to record and tour. It’s allowed me to pay the bills and have a wonderful fan base.” Brokop has won Independent Female Artist of the Year as well as Independent Song of the year at the Canadian Country Music Awards for co-writing and recording her hit ‘Something Undeniable.’ Jefferson, a San Francisco native, made his way to Music City after attending the University of California at Berkeley, where he graudated with a degree in bio-engineering and also earned a commercial pilot’s licence. The undefeated tennis champwho attended college via a tennis scholarship-saw his sports career end when he suffered an accident with a

Even though his hand was surgically repaired, Jefferson says his tennis game “was never the same,” and the son of a guitar teacher rekindled his passion for music, eventually portraying Hank Williams in the play, ‘Lonesome Highway.’ “I spent years listening to Hank’s voice,” he says. Jefferson signed with A&M records in Nashville and also writes songs for other artists, among them, ‘That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You’ which became a hot for singer Aaron Tippin. Lawson says the cou-
ple’s upcoming dates in Arcola are part of the Arcola Optimist’s continuing efforts to support community causes by bringing quality entertainment to this corner of the province. “We want to bring all kinds of entertainment to the area,” he says. “We’re talking about possibly doing another concert in April. And in addition to bringing kids’ movies to The Mac, we’re bringing in more mainstream movies for adults. If a film’s been in wide release for two weeks, we can get it.” “We’ve been really fortunate.” adds Lawson. “We’ve spent some time and money on the theatre
and it’s really paid off.” “As long as people come out and support these events, we’ll keep doing them.” A Country Christmas by The Jeffersons is at Arcola’s MacMurray Theatre Friday, Dec.4 and Saturday, Dec. 5, with performances at 8 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $20 each and are available in Arcola at the Arcola Pharmacy or at Chapman’s Grocery or in Carlyle at Michael’s Coffee Shop and Bakery. Tickets can also be purchased from any Optimist Club member or by calling Blake at 577-9904 or Glen at 577-3250.

Winter safety tips As you’re sprucing up your home this season, keep an eye out for these common holiday trip-ups, fire hazards, and other safety snafus. 1. Merry and Bright: Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders, or loose connections. When replacing bulbs, unplug the light string and be sure to match voltage and wattage to the original bulb. 2. Lights Out: Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or when going to bed. 3. Fresh Is Best: Try to purchase a freshly cut tree, as they are more resistant to ignition. Keep your Christmas tree watered and away from open candles. 4. Timing Is Everything: Use an outdoor timer certified by CSA International to switch lights on and off. Lights should be turned on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour. 5. Check for the Certification Mark: When purchasing light strings, extension cords, spotlights, electrical decorations, gas appliances, or carbon monoxide alarms, look for the certification mark of an accredited certification organization such as CSA International, UL, or ELT to ensure that the products comply with applicable standards for safety and performance. 6. One and Done: Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled. 7. The Great Outdoors: When hanging outdoor lights, keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters. Use insulated tape or plastic clips instead of metal nails or tacks to hold them in place. 8. Climbing Up: Using a ladder when you put up lights? Choose the correct ladder for the job and double check for a certification mark to ensure your portable ladder complies with applicable standards. 9. Keep the Gas Behind Glass: Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked, or broken, and only allow a qualified service person to replace
fireplace parts. 10. Sound the Alarm: Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work, and be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home -- especially near sleeping areas. 11. Filter-Friendly Furnace: To help prevent CO hazards in your home, have a qualified heating contractor perform a yearly maintenance check of your furnace and venting system, and clean or replace your furnace filter frequently during the heating seasons. 12. Clean the Clutter: Do not store combustible materials such as gasoline, propane, paper, chemicals, paint, rags,
Valleyview
and cleaning products near your gas furnace. Gasoline or propane cylinders should be stored outside the home. 13. Lighten the load with the right shovel. A snow shovel should be lightweight, about 1.5 kg or a little over 3 lbs., and the blade shouldn’t be too large. Otherwise your load will be too heavy, putting too much stress on your heart and back. The handle should be long enough so that you don’t have to stoop to shovel and the grip should be made of plastic or wood — metal gets too cold. As a general guideline, the shovel (blade plus handle) should be elbow height when standing upright.
