Kipling salutes former resident Holly Poirier

By Laura Kish EMS Holly Poirier, formerly of Kipling and now residing in Saskatoon, has started filming her fifth season of Paramedics: Emergency Response.

How did this show come about, you may wonder? The producer was sitting on an airplane and talking to some random guy who commented “You know

what would be a good show is if you followed a paramedic around.”

“Hey that’s actually a pretty good idea,” said the producer.

He approached the MD Ambulance in Saskatoon and talked to them about it and they also agreed that it was good idea.

They first started filming with a couple of paramedics in Saskatoon until they came

across Poirier and her partner at that time, who had the qualities and personality they were looking for and so it began for the two of them.

Although they said ‘no’ at first, they eventually gave in and here they are.

When the show first began, Poirier says she was very aware of the cameras always being there but says now she’s used to wearing a body-

“It’s second nature now,” commented Poirier.

A day in the life of a paramedic “Days are busier because there’s a lot of transfers and what not but I run an emerg. car, so I very rarely actually do a transfer,” explained Poirier, who added: “Nights tend to be more violent crimes – stabbings, shootings, overdoses, parties after the bars close down so the filming is done through the nightshift because of continuity.

“Our service is one of busiest services in Western Canada. I do have day shifts which are basically all emerg. calls for us, but it’s a hectic shift from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. – barely having time for a break. Calls are steady…. it’s go, go, go all night long. We’re lucky to see a base.”

“We just got two new trucks on the street and it’s still busy. And no it hasn’t slowed down during COVID … it’s actually worse. We have to wear ski goggles on calls and N95 masks on AGMP calls which means certain airway procedures.

There’s a certain protocol for everything,” Poirier explains.

Photo by Laura Kish Backing it up a few years, Poirier actually started out wanting to go into massage therapy shortly after graduating Grade 12, also working in the local care home and hospital as a care aide, but soon changed her career path to become a paramedic as this was something she always wanted to do. Being a lifeguard throughout her high school years, becoming a paramedic was always in the back of her mind.

Starting her career in Yorkton in 2011, she soon moved on to Saskatoon in 2013.

Among the memorable situations of being a paramedic Poirier has come across are bad ones and unfortunately those come almost every day. Bad car accidents and suicides are a couple of the worst calls that come in.

Poirier especially doesn’t like getting those ‘kid’ calls, especially a cardiac arrest, now that she has her own twoyear old daughter Harper. Her significant other Gilles is used to her being in this line of work.

It’s definitely different working in Saskatoon than in a rural area.

Secret Santa for seniors in Oxbow centres

When COVID hit the world early this year, Krista Dawn Loppe was considered an essential worker.

Because of this she was given many gift cards to thank her for her service but she did not think she was the one who deserved the gifts so she decided to use those gift cards to buy things for the seniors in The Villa, a care home in Oxbow.

The seniors were in lock down and were not allowed to have any visitors and it was very hard for them, so Loppe bought them things to help them

feel better during those first few months of COVID-19.

“Everybody in town knows all the seniors.

They helped build Oxbow; we know them in some way throughout the community,” Loppe explains.

Because of this, Loppe has decided to put together a Secret Santa this holiday season for the seniors in The Villa and if possible, the seniors in the Galloway Health Centre as well. There are 11 women and six men in the Villa and there are eight women and four men in the Galloway Centre.

“I have gotten a

couple donations so far via contactless pickup and drop off at my house. I also see people around town who tell me they will put something together,” Loppe said.

More donations are still needed.

White Bear First Nation now in lockdown due to COVID-19 The White Bear First Nation is in lockdown after a member of the onreserve community tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

In a letter posted to the White Bear Health Facebook page on Nov. 26, Chief Nathan Pasap said the person was hospitalized. Contact tracing for the individual who tested positive for COVID was happening.

White Bear’s council determined that it was imperative to immediately close all of the First Nation’s non-essential operations for the duration of two weeks, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 27 and continuing until l 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 10.

“This includes the office of the council, administration and health staff, the child care initiatives (daycare and headstart), White Bear Education Complex, Kakakaway Learning Centre, White

Bear Veteran’s Memorial Arena, and all band companies,” Pasap said in the letter.

Sponsored travel for workshops, conferences, sports events, etc., was also discontinued until further notice.

All band departments and companies were directed to enact emergency measures for their respective programs and services, with the intentions to continue essential services for members in a safe and effective manner.

Members were also reminded that if they or someone in their household is displaying any symptoms of the virus, be prepared to self-isolate in their home for 14 days, and to call 811 or the health centre they intend on visiting before they arrive so arrangements can be made for self-assessment and diagnosis.

White Bear Health distributed masks and

hand sanitizer to households within the community last weekend. People could expect to see a package left at their doorstep with information about self-isolation and caring for sick people at home.

Council also asked that all residents of the White Bear on-reserve community stay home unless going for groceries, medical supplies or work.

“The White Bear Health Centre is in weekly contact through conference calls every Thursday with the chief medical health officer, Dr. Ibraahim Kahn, First Nations and Inuit Health,” the letter stated.

The First Nations also emphasized the importance of handwashing and coughing practices.

“The goal is to prevent community transmission by severely limiting movement and contact amongst one another.”

Bits & Pieces quilting – not just a hobby

By Deb Andrew A small but mighty group of women has been meeting for over 20 years in various places in Carlyle to learn and perfect the art of quilting.

Lori Brown explained the history of their group that presently consists of 10-11 who meet weekly to quilt together. Years ago, they were led by instructors who would teach them methods for the different projects they would work on in the same space. Now, these sea-

soned quilters take on projects to benefit others and they love it.

COVID shut the group down for a few months, but once they could mask up and keep their distance in the United Church in Carlyle, a few of the group members started back up late summer.

Brown’s daughter received a quilt from a group that makes quilts for cancer patients.

Thinking this was a great idea and wanting to be a part of it, Brown found a chapter in Moosomin

who was happy to have a few more tradeswomen contributing to this great cause. When Moosomin had to shut down its group due to exhaustion, the Carlyle crew kept up on a smaller scale and began to make quilts for local patients.

When asked how they know who to give quilts to, Brown replied: “Unfortunately, all you have to do is talk to anyone you know and within a few minutes, you hear of people (who have just been diagnosed, are going through treatment or

have just finished). No one has not been affected by this disease.”

Once the quilts for cancer were completed, the ladies originally packed them up into Rubbermaid containers as they were unsure as to whether it was safe to deliver. They safely delivered them just this November. Going forward, the club decided to implement an application process for anyone with a friend or relative they would like to receive a cancer quilt.

Much of the fabric, batting and thread will all come from the quilters themselves who have accumulated scraps over the years.

Envision urges public to observe tragic anniversary The Envision Counselling and Support Centre is encouraging the public to reflect on a sad anniversary in Canadian history.

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is Dec. 6, which marks the anniversary of the murders of 14 women in 1989 at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.

“It feels like we’re talking about something that happened in another time and across the country, but the

underlying issue of violence against women remains so relevant, particularly right now, when people are overwhelmed with outside stress and pressures due to the pandemic,” said Christa Daku, executive director of Envision.

Dec. 6 is a chance to focus on women and girls who are experiencing violence in their everyday lives and shine a light on how these issues affect local communities.

“Our counsellors are responding to family violence situations in the southeast, helping mothers and their children to flee dangerous relationships, and preparing safety plans and providing counselling for those who have no option but to remain in the home,” says Daku.

She adds that Saskatchewan continues to have one of the highest rates of policereported intimate partner violence among the provinces.

lence happens among legally married, separated or divorced persons, current and former common-law partners, dating partners and other intimate partners.

Daku says that with more people turning to the Internet to communicate and to connect, it helps to be aware that gender-based hatred and cyberviolence are often on the other side of the screen.

“We currently have our ROAM educational program-

ming going into schools in the region, which we hope will prevent the issues that our organization deals with later on,” says Daku.

“By educating youth in our region about topics such as healthy online behaviour or toxic masculinity, we hope to prevent gender based violence in the future. We talk to students about the pyramid of violence, where hate culture can escalate into violence if the progression isn’t stopped.”

Big COVID numbers require better understanding

By Murray Mandryk Premier Scott Moe had to self-isolate the week before the fall sitting of the legislature started.

He did so because he came into contact with someone at a restaurant in Prince Albert after a family funeral.

Essentially, Moe was simply staying home and self-monitoring — really, no different than the reality for thousands of others in this province who have faced the increasingly growing prospects of encountering someone with COVID-19 that is now everywhere in the province.

For his political enemies, it became an opportunity to take a few cheap shots. This is one of the big problems in the COVID-19 fight.

It’s been far too politicized by fear, exaggerations and misinformation that have become the favoured weapons of both sides.

The only way to defeat this virus is with facts, fair-mindedness and reason.

And that fight needs to begin with the stated and collective goal of reducing new and active cases by all of us doing what’s reasonable to reduce the spread.

The challenge, however, is that to accomplish this requires a buy-in from everyone without the distractions of political references about things like rights and freedoms.

That shouldn’t be much different than following the rules of the road, but even traffic laws need to be enforced by fines.

This is where it’s up to Moe’s government to impose stricter rules of the road and make sure through enforcement that people are following those rules.

We need to do this because where we are at right now suggests that we’ll soon be in trouble if we don’t get a handle on the spread.

Sure, we have so far managed to avoid the death toll we’ve seen in Alberta or even Manitoba because we aren’t seeing as many deaths in care homes as elsewhere.

While the dispute is one that’s been frequently categorized as one between the doctors and the business community, this really doesn’t really reflect the core concerns on either side.

One can understand why businesses — especially small businesses that have been barely hanging on for the past nine months — are frustrated by the prospects of shutdowns. Coming at the business crisis season for retail, this is a particularly frightening prospect.

The prospects of hospitals — specifically, intensive care unit beds — being overrun by COVID-19 patients is as frightening to medical professionals as temporary shutdowns are to business people.

And their fear isn’t just for their patients. The fear for many medical professionals is the health of themselves, their own families and their staff as the people most likely to be exposed to COVID-19.

It is more important for everyone to understand what hundreds of new cases each day might really mean. With only around 100 ICU beds in the province, that means no beds available for those in serious car accidents or those suffering heart attacks if these beds are already occupied by COVID-19 patients.

Recent information from government shows close contacts in houseshold are the top spreader of the virus.

However, the information also showed 25 per cent of infections come from recreational facilities like rinks, bingo halls, bowling alleys and casinos.

We need set aside our personal and political views and look objectively at what needs to be done.

When we’re all knit together

Shelley Luedtke When I was in high school, a friend and I taught a Sunday school class together.

On the morning of the final rehearsal for the Christmas concert we saw other teachers giving presents to their students and realized we didn’t have gifts to give to our class. Since we were living in a small town with zero shopping options on a Sunday afternoon, I figured we were out of luck.

But my friend Corinne quickly devised a plan. When she returned to the church that night, she brought with her the most adorable knitted snowmen she had whipped up that afternoon. She said

it was no big deal. I was amazed.

Research says activities like needlework can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, and reduce levels of harmful stress hormones in our bodies. That is good news for those who love to do this kind of work, including the more than 30 per cent of women aged 25-35 who knit or crochet. The numbers of younger people picking up the skill is growing, as is the number of boys and men giving it a try.

Many of these crafters spend months gearing up for this time of year as they collectively knit hundreds of thousands of hats, scarves and mittens … all to give away.

I love mittens. I love the bulkiness, the coziness, and the way snow sticks to them. My absolute favorites were the ones produced for the Vancouver Olympics.

They were in such demand that I was grateful they’d been under the tree for me at Christmas, just weeks before the Games began.

I was given pairs from the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics too, but there was just something much more special for me about those ones in 2010. I wore them until there was practically nothing left of them.

Our choice of mittens can be symbolic of what is important to us.

They may show our allegiance to a sports franchise, support for a charity or even our cultural heritage. I am a huge fan of the beautiful Norwegian ones, and a sad day for me was when I realized I lost one of mine.

I kept the single mitten because I couldn’t bear to part with the one I still had.

Mittens make great topics for children’s books. They are filled with warmth, humor and beautiful illustrations, like The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen, the story of a woman who knits mittens and secretly hangs them on a tree at a bus stop. Children who don’t have any are able to select a pair so they can go and play in the snow. Each time she

runs out of yarn, a basket mysteriously shows up on her doorstep and she continues to knit.

December 6 is International Mitten Tree Day, a day believed to have originated with an elementary school teacher, likely in response to the book, and fittingly on the day celebrating Saint Nicholas, known for secret gift giving.

Classrooms, churches, workplaces, community groups and individuals hang mittens from trees, with the intent that they be given away--a gift that should never be underestimated.

It’s such a cozy feeling slipping your hands into a pair of warm mittens—a feeling just like someone is wrapping their hand around yours and holding on tight. We may not be able to be close or touch one another right now, but there is still so much we can do.

Giving a pair of mittens may be the very best way to grab hold of someone’s hand and make them feel as if they are getting a great big hug. That’s my outlook.

Southeast athlete to play volleyball in university A talented young athlete from Alida has committed to play volleyball at the university level for next season.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen women’s volleyball team announced that Cordelia Patton, a 6-foot1 left side with the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School, is their first commitment for the 2021 recruiting class.

She will enroll in kinesiology and applied health, and have five years of eligibility.

“I choose the University of Winnipeg because they had the schooling program that I wanted to enroll in.

Winnipeg is a new city for me, and I was looking for something new after high school,” said Patton.

The program also has a special team culture that caught her eye, and she was really impressed with their coach Phil Hudson.

“He has a very successful background, and I think he has a lot to offer the university,” said Patton. “He has only been coaching there for a couple of years, and I think he is helping the girls by turning the program for the better.”

Patton said she had a leadership role placed upon her when she arrived at the school for her Grade 9 year. From that point on, she welcomed the role.

Photo submitted “I came in as the out-of-towner in Oxbow, but as I grew with them it was ‘You’re the biggest player on the court, so you need to take this step,’” said Pat-

ton, who hails from Alida. “Leadership has always been a thing for me the past four years.”

She admitted she wasn’t sure what role the pandemic would play on her ability to land a post-secondary playing opportunity, since she won’t get to play in her Grade 12 year, but her success in Grade 11 helped overcome the lost season.

“Last year was definitely a breakthrough year for me. I probably performed the best I ever have, so I was fortunate to go through that to show universities.”

Patton began sending videos and emails to coaches at the end of her Grade 11 season. She said she started hearing back from coaches just as the 2020 club season was getting set to start last spring.

“It was my goal by the end of December (2019) to have my highlight video made,” she said. “It was about a month into COVID that I started hearing back from everyone. It was very weird because when COVID hit we were supposed to be going to provincials in club, and I was supposed to go to Best of the West in Edmonton where universities would’ve been. So it was kind of like ‘Oh, I don’t get to do that ei-

ther.’ That was really hard to get past.”

Her Oxbow teams have medalled in Saskatchewan 3A provincials in each of her years at the school, capped by a provincial title in 2019.

Patton has also competed for Oxbow’s Black Knights Volleyball Club and in the Sask. Volleyball provincial program. She said her spike touch is now nine feet, nine inches, a three-inch increase from club season.

That length at the net is one of the things that caught Hudson’s eye.

“Cordelia is an excellent, allaround athlete who has a tremendous skill set,” the head coach said. “She plays the game well above the net and possesses a fast, powerful arm swing that will give her instant success at the U Sports level.”

Patton credits the Black Knights coaches and the Oxbow club volleyball program for playing big roles in her development.

She hasn’t been able to make it to Winnipeg to view the campus due to COVID-19, but she is looking forward to the start of the season next fall. She’ll spend next few months focusing on the physical side of the sport, so she can be in the best shape of her life some September.

Big Six season halted due to new provincial restrictions The Big Six Hockey League’s 2020-21 season is on hold, with no indication of when it will resume.

The league, and most sports across the province, had their seasons put on pause by the provincial government on Nov. 27 when new public health orders came into effect. Those restrictions were announced two days earlier.

The restrictions will remain in effect until Dec. 17, at which time the government will decide whether to extend them.

The Big Six was slated to play its final game before the Christmas break on Dec. 17. The league had not scheduled games for 2021 as of yet, so there are currently no games scheduled.

Twenty-one games have

been postponed due to the new health orders.

Teams had been placed into two divisions, a west division and an east division, with games limited to within the division. For the most part, teams were playing home and home series on weekends.

The Carlyle Cougars, Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings, Redvers Rockets,

Wawota Flyers and Carnduff Red Devils were in the east.

The Arcola-Kisbey Combines, Bienfait Coalers, Midale Mustangs and Yellow Grass Wheat Kings were in the west.

The Coalers had the best record in the league at 5-0.

Carnduff (3-0) was also undefeated.

As for the Cougars, they were 2-3, but coming off

a two-game sweep of the Oil Kings in Kipling-Windthorst’s first games of the season.

Also affecting the league was the decision by the government to limit arenas to 30 spectators. Previously the number was 150 attendees.

Lampman’s Veroba joins Hockey Canada board Mary Anne Veroba is a lifelong hockey fan.

She recalls that when she was a child, she would watch the Montreal Canadiens play the Boston Bruins on Hockey Night in Canada while in the basement of her parents’ home in Windsor, Ont. The Lampman resident’s love of the game has resulted in her being elected to Hockey Canada’s board of directors, putting her on one of the most influential boards in the sport.

“I love watching young kids play, and just learning how to skate. I love the joy it brings. You see kids and their rosy cheeks, and then you see teenagers learning, and I saw it in my kids,” Veroba told the Mercury.

She was elected to the board on Nov. 14, and Hockey Canada made the announcement two days later.

Veroba said she took some time before

making her decision, because she wanted to make sure she had the qualifications to serve the members. She did not want to be, as she put it, a “token female.”

Hockey Canada now wants to have at least two women on its board each year.

“They did want to create diversity on the board, but I wanted to know that I would earn my spot,” said Veroba. “I think my desire to throw my name in comes from a desire to continue to want to serve the game of hockey.”

Veroba recently wrapped up a sevenyear run as the chairperson of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association board of directors. She was the first female chairperson of the board in its history.

A nominating committee sought out potential candidates for board members. More than 20 people were running for five board spots.

“We put together a video for the members to look at,” said Veroba.

“It was a two-minute video in which each person running for a board position talked about the things they thought for the role of the board.”

She believes Hockey Canada should serve the 13 different branches who are part of the membership, and then the branches should serve the members, which are the community hockey associations, who in turn serve the players.

“I think everyone focuses on providing a great experience for the player, so we all should be on the same page,” she said.

A virtual orientation session was held Saturday, when board chair Michael Brind’Amour assigned different committees and responsibilities.

Hockey, she was at the same table as Hockey Canada representa-

tives. Last year, as part of her Saskatchewan work, Veroba was tasked with facilitating a task team on rule changes.

“It depends on what the needs are at the time, but I’m assuming that they’ll place me (where they need me) – and I actually told Michael wherever he wants to, wherever he thinks I’m the best fit, to go ahead and put me wherever he chooses,” said Veroba.

Some of the new board members haven’t had the same experience with Hockey Canada as Veroba.

She expressed support for the direction that Hockey Canada has taken, with a theme of making hockey more accessible and celebrating those involved with the game. On Father’s Day, there was a message with a thank you to the dads for the roles they play.

“I think it’s important to recognize that hockey is made up of so many different people and so many different roles, and hockey can happen in all kinds of different situations.”

“I’m very proud to be from Saskatchewan. I think Saskatchewan gives people good roots in recognizing all kinds of different places where people come from,” said Veroba.

Hockey gets a bad rap for some things,

but there are many more good things, and she loves seeing how the sport brings people together to cheer for Team Canada – something she has seen while working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, when people would gather around the TV to watch the World Junior Hockey championships or the Olympics.

“It’s good for the Canadian soul, and I think I can provide a service,” said Veroba.

Many sports affected by new restrictions

The restrictions were announced by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health on Nov. 25 to combat the spread of COVID-19. They came into effect two days later.

Those restrictions in many ways do not go as far as some of what has been implemented in Alberta and Mani-

toba in recent days and weeks.

All indoor public gatherings were limited to 30 people, ranging from arenas to worship services to casinos.

All team/group sports, activities, games, competitions, recitals, practices, etc. were suspended, including amateur and recreational leagues for all age groups. Examples include hockey, curling, racquet sports, cheerleading, dance practices in group setting, etc.

Athletes under the

age of 18 may continue practising or training in groups of eight or fewer.

Mask use is now required for all indoor fitness activities, except for swimming. Individual and group fitness activities can continue, but with three-metre spacing and limits of eight people in a group.

Chief Medical Health Office Dr. Saqib Shahab explained the reasoning behind the sports restrictions, saying that the nature of play always has a risk of transmission, even if you follow all

the guidelines.

“But over the last two to three weeks, they were becoming so frequent, and many cases, they were resulting in, for example, in children's sports, multiple cases then being imported into schools.

For adult sports, multiple cases became imported into workplaces. So, it was really important to have that pause for three weeks to slow down transmission in that setting.”

Once cases come down, Shahab said the guidelines may be adjusted again.

Raising funds and raising spirits this season

By Deb Andrew Carli Wollbaum, director for Cornerstone Family and Youth, has displayed all the items for a Seasonal Silent Auction she will be hosting as a replacement for the Festival of Trees fundraiser normally held during the Dickens Festival.

COVID may have thrown a wrench into a lot of the traditional things we have become accustomed to during some common Carlyle functions, but many

organizations have found ways to continue to celebrate the season or raise funds for their programs.

In previous years, the group would do a raffle and silent auction items but this year they will have an online auction. The library has aided in donating space to display auctions items and the support of many people and businesses has made this the perfect alternative.

You can see all of the items on display at

the Carlyle Public Library Branch or check them out on Facebook.

Wollbaum did mention there will be many last-minute perishable items such as baking and floral arrangements.

Although Wollbaum is a nurse working at Moose Mountain Lodge, she has been loving her role with Cornerstone Family and Youth. She is constantly looking for fun, encouraging alternatives to what the COVID measures are in-

evitably shutting down and forcing to change.

Her outlook during this pandemic has been so positive and nothing will prevent her from showing care and love and coming up with ideas to be a blessing.

With that in mind, you should know that she is offering to take Christmas cards, written by you, to the nursing home residents.

Yep, that is right. Have your children or you yourself sit down and write out a small Christmas blessing or word of encouragement to a stranger who needs it.

Wollbaum also encourages people to walk by the nursing home during the times the residents are in the main area for meals.

It was great to see and talk to so many parents, guardians, and students on the Teams Online student-led conferences last week. Remember, if you ever have questions or concerns to discuss with your child’s particular teachers, please email the teacher or contact the school.

A new reporting system called EDSBY has been rolled out for parents to use in order to see students’ attendance and marks. Its purpose is to improve electronic communication between school and home. Contact the school if you haven’t received your password or are having problems logging onto the system at 306-453-2500.

Again this year the school will be collecting donations for the Carlyle and District Food Bank. Send your non-perishable food items to the school before Dec. 18. The classroom cohort with the most donations (per capita) will win a complete sandwich lunch made by sandwich artists. The second and third place classroom cohorts will win frozen treats. These prizes were kindly donated by local restaurants.

The school student leadership team is again promoting school spirit with the Twelve Days of Christmas. Themed activities started Dec. 1 with Ugly Christ-

Fill McMillan’s Yukon Twisted Tree Auction for Kipling’s Food Bank in Oxbow a success

By Laura Kish No one wants to go hungry at Christmas or any time for that matter. So what can be done about it?

Staff at McMillan Motor Products in Kipling started a food drive for the Kipling food bank at the start of November and will continue accepting donations and adding to the vehicle until Dec. 23.

“COVID-19 has made it to be a trying year for all in our community,” explained organizer Dominique Sauve about the goal they had in mind. “We have de-

cided to do something for our local food bank to help those most in need this holiday season.”

“We started off with our 2021 Chevrolet Spark. Once the vehicle was full we moved up to our 2020 GMC Terrain, our goal is to fill up our 2021 Yukon,” added Sauve.

The plan is for McMillan Motor Products to make the presentation on Dec. 23 to the local food bank.

“I am so proud of what we have achieved so far with reaching our goal, we are halfway there (as of Nov. 30),”

explained organizer Dominque Sauve. “I would like to say thank you from McMillan Motor Products to our employees and our wonderful customers who have donated to our food drive. This is the first year that we have done a food drive to this extent. I hope that we can continue this food drive yearly for the holiday season.

“On Dec. 21, 2020, if you would like to donate and help us reach our goal we will have our Yukon parked outside the Kipling Community Centre. We hope to see you there.”

The Expressway Family Centre in Oxbow held their annual Twisted Tree Auction last week and according to Stephanie Barnes, program coordinator of the centre, it was one of their most successful years yet.

“We raised over $9,600 this year, which is great considering we had to do the whole thing online this year due to COVID,” Barnes explained.

The money raised by this fundraiser goes towards the operating budget for the centre. The Expressway Family Centre is a non-profit organization in Oxbow that offers free to very low cost programs to different members of the community.

They also have a preschool and playschool program and drop-in

programs. The goal of the centre is to promote family connections and healthy things for families and children.

There were 95 items donated for this year’s auction and all the items were sold, paid for and picked up. It was a great success for the centre.

Barnes explains that they have a few more fundraisers lined up for next year but due to COVID restrictions they are unsure if they will be able to hold them.

It’s why this year’s Twisted Tree Auction was such an important one.

Barnes and the rest of the Expressway Centre family would like to thank everyone for their generosity, donations and purchases that made this years Twisted Tree Auction so successful.

Carlyle students continue to fight impaired driving

By Deb Andrew Students at the Gordon F. Kells High School have taken up the fight against impaired driving.

The school has a Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) group whose mandate is to educate and raise awareness in the schools of the ramifications of impaired driving.

Linda Briggs detailed their activities in previous years that they have been unable to do since the COVID shutdown last March.

Fundraising, participating in various SGI campaigns, mock crash events and speakers to the school have all been put on hold, but Briggs explained some of the positive outcomes they have had in raising awareness over the years.

“We rely on many community volunteers for the day of and the days leading up to a mock crash event. We have had cars donated, the students volunteer to act as accident victims and the drunk driver, and we stage the entire scene. EMS workers, volunteer firefighters

“It is an extremely powerful experience.”

in the destruction as a result of impaired driving in one way or another.

From a young man whose brother died after being hit by a drunk driver, and a couple who lost their daughter in a collision, right up to a gentleman from the United States who was an impaired driver and is now a paraplegic, they have heard it all.

Pictures from past mock crashes were provided by Linda as a visual reminder of the farreaching impact of impaired driving accidents.

Legislation in Saskatchewan dishes out stiff penalties to anyone considering drinking and driving to deter this insane action. An immediate roadside suspension, vehicle impoundment, impaired driving education and mandatory ignition interlock are all implemented at the impaired driver’s expense, and they cost thousands of dollars in the long run.

What cannot be measured in dollars and cents is the pain, suffering and loss that an impaired driver can inflict on human lives.

Corporal James Barnett of the Carlyle RCMP detachment explained how they continue to deal with impaired driving as they always would. During various holidays, such as at Christmas and New Year’s Eve, there is a traffic division which sometimes uses members from Estevan and Weyburn to aid the local RCMP to provide extra services.

As with every RCMP call, local RCMP are mandated to deal with impaired driving as is has been legislated for them to do so.

“It will be no different this year,” Barnett explained.

He also referred to an Estevan Mercury article from Nov. 25 where an Estevan woman received a national award for her efforts to education and raise awareness about impaired drivers.

With all this being said, the reality that drinking and driving kills is still the bottom line.

Don’t do it. Don’t let a friend or family member do it. The cost is too high, and the effects are too tragic.

Please don’t drink and drive.

Edward “Sandy” Alexander McAlaster of Lanigan, SK passed away on October 9, 2020 at the Humboldt District Hospital after his final battle with cancer.

He was born on December 22, 1924 to Hector and Henrietta McAlaster in Kisbey, SK. Sandy served in WWII in Canada, the United Kingdom, and northern Europe as a tank radio operator and gunner with Fort Garry Horse R.C. Armoured Corp from January 6, 1943 to March 1, 1946.

Returning home, Sandy began farming and married Dora Pearl Armstrong on November 7, 1953 in Plentywood, Montana. They farmed until 1970 when he became the Postmaster in Kisbey. In 1974, he transferred to Rose Valley, remaining there until retiring in 1990.

Sandy was an active member of the community, always happy to volunteer and help where needed. In Kisbey, he was a Councillor for the RM of Brock and a member of the B.P.O. Elks of Canada. He was a member and held executive positions in the Royal Canadian Legion in Kisbey, Rose Valley, and Lanigan. It was in Lanigan where he received his 70 Year Member pin. Sandy was on the executive board for the Canadian Postmasters & Assistants Association for many years. He belonged to the Rose Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Rose Valley Housing Authority and delivered Meals on Wheels into his 80s. He also held positions as a Commissionaire and Justice of the Peace for many years in Rose Valley.

Sandy enjoyed reading, woodworking, baseball, hockey, curling, cross-country skiing, golf, playing cards and going for his daily walks. One of his fondest memories was vacations with Dora as they travelled to all the Canadian provinces, the Yukon and Alaska.

Sandy is survived by his son Lyn McAlaster (Tracy Clack) of Stony Plain; daughters Darly (Doug) Leggott of Lanigan and Brenda McAlaster of Muenster. Grandchildren: Krys McAlaster, Sean McAlaster (son Matthew), both of Edmonton; Kevin (Cassandra) Leggott (sons Thomas and Wallace) of Lanigan; Julie Leggott (Brady Peter) of Pilot Butte; Cali DeMeyer (Fabian Dick) of Saskatoon. Siblings: sister Evelyn (Jack) Begg and brother Allan McAlaster, both of Saskatoon; numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Dora; parents Hector and Henrietta; brothers John, Durwood and Fred; sisters Florence Thomson, Edith Eros, Marion Schneider and Jean Wyatt.

Sandy will be greatly missed by his family and all whom he befriended.

A private memorial service was held on November 21, 2020. Donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion or the Canadian Cancer Society.

With sadness the family of Norma Mary Struble announces her passing on November 19, 2020.

A dedicated mom, Nana, wife, sister and friend, Norma’s memory will be in our hearts forever. Her smile, kind words, and laughter will linger in our minds for years to come. Her friendship and caring ways will keep us moving forward knowing she will be with us always.

Norma is survived by her daughters, Marlene (Wayne) Denet, Dianne (John) Teslak, Lisa Struble (Michael Dawson), her grandchildren, Evan, Abby, Ryan, Rachel, Matthew, and Nicolas.

She was predeceased by her husband Dean Struble.

There will be no service at this time, Norma will be taken to her hometown Wawota, Saskatchewan and laid to rest along with her husband Dean.

Mary-Louise Real 1928 - 2020

France Rogg 1941 - 2020

France Rogg, late of Redvers, Sask. passed away at the Regina General Hospital, Regina, Sask. on Friday, November 27, 2020 at the age of 79.

France was the daughter of the late Alphonse & Antonie (née Laval) Rogg, who preceded her in death, along with her step mother Gabrielle (née Laval) Rogg and siblings: Stephanie, Renee, Stephane, Denise, Marie, George and Gerard.

She is survived by her brother Rene; sisters: Celine, Clarisse, Elise and Gabrielle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

France’s career began in Winnipeg, where she first worked in a hospital and later in the Grain Exchange office and other governmental departments. Later in her life she moved home to take care of her mother, who was wheelchair-bound. After mom passed away, France took a home care course, and went to work in the Sinclair and Reston areas. She very much loved her work with the older people.

France loved cooking, gardening and especially tending to her flowers. God bless you, sister!

Due to the ongoing restrictions on gatherings, a private family Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Redvers, with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding.

Interment followed in the Redvers Town Cemetery.

The family of Mary-Louise Real wishes to announce her passing on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at the Lampman Community Health Centre, Lampman, Sask. at the age of 92.

Mary-Louise will be remembered by her many friends and family. Mary-Louise was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, William T. (Bill) Real; son Philip Real as well as brothers: Marcel, Paul, Lucien, Albert and sister Clothilde. She leaves to mourn her children: Rosemary (Cam) Hanna, Janet (Ken) Gray, Anita (Marc) Boutin, Dorothy (Norm) Deseautels and Dell (Jeanine) Real; brother Vital (Elsie) Frecon; sister Jeanne Saleski; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mary-Louise was always up for an adventure whether it be with her loving children or grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Women’s League for many year and volunteered with the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary.

Mary-Louise will be lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren.

Due to ongoing restrictions on gatherings, a Private Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, November 30, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Storthoaks, Sask. with Rev. Ronald Andree Presiding.

Joseph Christopher Pirlot 1936 - 2020

Joseph Christopher Pirlot, beloved husband of Brith Pirlot, passed away at the Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, SK on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the age of 84 years.

Joseph was born in 1936 in the Manor District, the youngest child of Jack and Catherine (Jacobi) Pirlot. Joe attended school at Winterburne and the Wauchope school until grade 9. Joe worked for various farmers and at the Sudbury Nickel mines in Ontario. He worked as a cook at work camps in northern Alberta until he returned home and married Brith, October 23, 1963. For the remainder of his life Joe was a grain and cattle farmer. Joe was an avid dancer and enjoyed many hours on the dance floor.

Countless hours were enjoyed with the company of his grandchildren. During the last few years, he enjoyed spending time at the casino visiting and relaxing. Joe will be greatly missed for his sense of humour with family and friends.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Catherine Pirlot; his son Tracey; brother Bill Pirlot and sister Thelma (Pirlot) Toms.

Joe will be lovingly missed by his wife of 57 years, Brith and his children, Cal (Barb), Cal’s son Daric (Sheena) and family - Rosy, Lochlan and Raif; Cal’s daughters, Amanda (Joel) Gervais and family – Jules and Cam; Lexie and Olivia; Lance (Alaina) and their children, Brittany (Aaron) Vanderlot - daughter Rachel, Marissa (Makelya), Cassidy and Kate; Tyler and his children, Lena and Tom. Joe will be deeply missed by his brother John of Carlyle; and sistersin-law, Gerd Madsen of Weyburn and Thelma Pirlot of Regina; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends Paul and Annette LeNouail.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be at a later date when it is once again safe to gather together.

Cornerstone releases year-end financial report Shelley Toth, the chief financial officer for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division, spent some time with the division’s board members on Nov. 18, walking them through highlighted details of the most recent annual financial report.

She noted near the end of her presentation that despite all the financial changes made necessary due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic, the division has emerged

relatively unscathed.

The financial wrangling was extensive on many fronts, the board members learned as they viewed the details.

The 2019-20 fiscal year resulted in revenues of $118.7 million while expenses amounted to $104.6 million for a net surplus of $14.1 million, she reported. That is $6.3 million higher than the budgeted surplus of $7.8 million. This was mainly due to higher than budgeted capi-

tal grant revenue for the construction of the Legacy Park Elementary School in Weyburn and lower than budgeted expenditures due to operational changes that were implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total revenue was $2.9 million higher than anticipated in the budget. Toth explained that variances on the revenue side included a $3.2 million increase in grant revenue, mostly for the Legacy Park School.

“Funding is provided as expenses are incurred which were higher than estimated in the budget. Operating grant revenue was $300,000 higher than budget due to higher than projected enrolment. The grant for

drivers’ education was $200,000 lower than budget as this program was suspended for part of the year due to COVID-19,” she said.

There was a decrease of $720,000 in school-generated funds, again, due to the pandemic that shortened the school year.

Funds for First Nations’ programming through the federal Jordan’s Principle project came in at $166,000 and that was higher than budgeted, Toth said. There was an increase of $100,000 for an early learning and intensive support pilot program from the provincial Ministry of Education. “Unspent funds for these programs have been identified as restricted within our accumulated surplus,”

she said.

Decreases in revenue were realized in external services by $79,000, and the respite portion of Jordan’s Principle program which was $137,000 higher than budget while other areas such as cafeteria revenue, down by $32,000 and the fact that the sale of two teacherages for a possible gain of $175,000, did not occur.

Operating expenses were down 3.1 per cent or $3.4 million, Toth reported.

Tangible capital assets brought into the school division included $1 million for nine school buses and another $243,000 for six other vehicles; $673,000 for furniture and equipment which included $173,000 in furnishing and equipment for the new bus garage in Weyburn and $128,000 for caretaking and facilities maintenance equipment.

Toth also spoke of the $17.7 million for assets under construction, with $15 million of that for the Legacy Park Elementary School and $2.6 million for the Weyburn bus garage along with $35,000 for a playground at Wawota School.

“The division ended the fiscal year with an accumulated surplus of $160.5 million consisting of $123.8 million in tangible capital assets ($141.6 million in assets less $17.8 million in debt owing on assets).

There is also $3.3 million in restricted ministry funding for future maintenance and renewal projects to maintain division facilities and $7.3 million in designated assets for specific use, with a good portion of that designated for Legacy Park Elementary School and just under $2 million in COVID-19 related savings that are restricted for future capital purchases.

In total, Toth said there was $26 million in unrestricted surplus and that is a reduction of $4.4 million from the previous year.

The financial statements that have been officially audited will now be submitted to the provincial Ministry of Education for acceptance and that will lead to the release of a final annual report.

Trouble tree and Advent’s good light

By Ken Rolheiser A plumber helped me restore an old farmhouse. After a rough first day – a flat tire, his drill quit and his truck refused to start, I drove him home in stony silence. He invited me to meet his family.

As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When he opened the door, he was wreathed in smiles, and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.

Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

“Oh, that's my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I will have troubles on the job, but those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and children. I just hang them up on the tree every night and ask God to take care of them.

“Then in the morning I pick them up again.

Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I pick 'em up, there aren't nearly

as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

Simple little actions like this plumber’s can help keep us on the path of virtue and bring us to better times. That is what Advent is all about. The Christmas tree brings color and light into our homes while reminding us of the spring to come and everlasting life with God. Another simple, holy habit we can adopt is from how Pope Francis starts his workday.

Every morning he goes to the study and prays to Our Lady.

“I go to the window to look at the square, to look at the city, and there, at the end of the square, I see you. Every morning I greet you with my heart and thank you.”

If you find yourself always falling into the same bad habits, Philip Kosloski suggests, “You need to do this every morning. Make a firm resolution to commit no sin during the day.

Be on your guard, especially against your most frequent and besetting sin. Consider well all the dangers and occasions of

sin. Make a firm resolution to resist every temptation and ask of God the necessary grace to do so.”

In “Why light can help us stop bad habits” Kosloski gives this advice. “Darkness gives us the false idea that our sins are somehow hidden from God and oth-

ers.” The Bible reveals this: “Who can see me?

Darkness surrounds me, walls hide me, no one sees me. Who can stop me from sinning?” (Sirach 23:18).

Why do night clubs dim their lights? What would happen if a bar turned up all the lights, full blast? Would we

drink less alcohol? Often we think that God cannot see us when we sin, when in fact he is there the whole time, Kosloski suggests. At night, when we are tempted to do something we know is wrong, turn on all the lights in your house.

Light puts a spotlight on us, and we can

no longer hide. It has a psychological effect that God has placed within this world to remind us that he is the “the light of the world.” (John 8:12).

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone.” (Isaiah 9:1)

We have a reason to sing A precious sister-in-law struggles with near blindness, overwhelming tiredness but most of all, with loneliness.

Her husband passed away three years ago. Now alone after 63 years of marriage, she has lots of reasons to be glum but in regular telephone conversations with her, I am always so blessed and encouraged regarding her attitudes. In a recent call she told me how another one of our sisters-in-law comes to visit and read to her each evening. Later, another friend and Erna speak on the phone; actually, they sing.

In the darkness of COVIDinduced lockdowns, we still have reason to sing. I referred to this Chinese proverb in an earlier article but it still hangs above my desk and still speaks to me daily: “A bird does not sing because it

In a seemingly unrelated example, here’s another exhortation to realize the source of our strength.

I am not a TV person but six evenings a week I join my husband in watching Wheel of Fortune. Recently, a contestant excitedly called out, “I’m declaring victory!” Host Pat Sajak responded, “That is not correct.”

The contestant looked stunned

and thoroughly mystified.

The next contestant then answered: “Declaring victory” to which Pat responded, “That’s correct.” Even more mystified, the first contestant said, “That was my answer.” Pat then explained that he had added the word “I’m,” thus invalidating his response. Sadly, he hadn’t even realized that he’d done that.

How many times do we unconsciously do the same thing by saying “I’m in charge” or “I can handle this.” Let’s remember that we are not able to declare victory on our own. He is the one who gives us that song.

Will we be able to go home for Christmas? Premier Scott Moe and Ryan Meili take different sides

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Premier Scott Moe made reference Monday of possible easing of COVID-19 socialization restrictions in time for Christmas. The following day, New Democratic Party Leader Ryan Meili told Moe during question period, “At this rate, the only thing you’ll be opening for Christmas is a field hospital.”

Speaking to reporters after question period Tuesday regarding current modelling of COVID-19’s spread in Saskatchewan, Moe said, “Modelling is modelling, and not in any way predictions.

Modelling is put together to predict what our responses should be.”

He noted a number of initiatives were put in last week, and the government was looking for success by Dec. 17 to only curb the increased rate of infection experienced over the last few weeks, which as also been experienced by the rest of Canada and North America.

Moe said, “If we are able to, in some way, have some type of reprieve, of that rate of transmission, Dr. (Saqib Shahab) is working on what those scenarios may look like, and what recommendations to see what that looks like.

“This is part of the short-term goal, to allow, potentially, people to see their loved ones

for a short period of time, with the appropriate safety, personal protection … in a long-term care centre,” he said.

“In order for that to happen, people need to adhere to the measures that are in place. And we need to see, and Dr. Shahab will speak more specifically to this, as we get closer to December 17, which is the time when we are either going to relax, renew or intensify the restrictions that were put in place last week.”

Responding to a reporter who asked if it was his place to provide hope, Moe said, “If it was my place to provide hope, and to provide opportunity, and to provide some targets for people across the province to work towards, between now and December 25th, I think it is.”

He said Quebec will have “a little bit of a different standard” from Dec. 24 to Dec. 27 regarding social gatherings, for instance.

Dr. Shahab, Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, would be making the recommendations, Moe said.

“It may be the status quo,” Moe said.

He expressed hope, saying, “I would think its everyone’s hope that we would be able to see some of our family over Christmas. I, myself, my wife, we are already making plans for that not to happen in our family. Unfortunately, I know many other peo-

ple across the province are likely having the same conversation with their immediate families.”

Moe noted it’s been nine, 10 long months across the world, and “we do need some opportunities to look forward to. Christmas maybe one of those opportunities. We're hoping it is; it may not be.”

He noted widespread access to a vaccine is another opportunity.

Moe said risk to long-term care facilities can be mitigated through the usage of personal protective equipment.

Meili told reporters, “I think he should acknowledge that he should have acted when the experts said to him, when 400 doctors came up and said, ‘You need to take action now. Do that circuit breaker.’

“That’s what would have saved Christmas. I think trying to spin people a story that somehow we'll be opening up for Christmas at the same time, as we're really going to be opening field hospitals, is dishonest and should not be approached.”

Meili continued, “He should be honest with Saskatchewan people about what the modeling actually says.

And that's what frustrates me so much.

We are once again saying good-bye to another month and hello to a new one – December. Where does the time go? Pretty soon we’ll soon be at the end of another year, and I’m sure no one is going to be sad to see 2020 leave and then we can hope for nothing better but a very healthy new year.

What with the outlook of a vaccine around the corner for COVID-19 we can all rest more comfortably, but in the meantime still be very cautious and obey the health rules, keep to small family gatherings only, keep a safe distance and wear your mask.

Cornerstone school board holds first meeting since election Four new faces were present around the conference table in the South East Cornerstone Public School Division's head office on Nov. 18.

Eric McCrimmon, Tami Scott, Jennifer Wilkinson and Norma HewittLendrum took their rightful places at the table, having been declared elected or acclaimed in the Nov. 9 election process.

McCrimmon joins Kevin Keating as a representative for the city of Estevan. He had submitted his nomination papers early in the nomination period and ran unopposed. Keating, who had been a Subdivision 4 (Alameda, Lampman, Oxbow, Bienfait) representative previously, and who is now residing in Estevan, took the other Estevan seat by acclamation.

The Subdivision 4 position Keating vacated is now filled by Tami Scott, who also ran unopposed.

The Subdivision 6 seat (Gladmar, Oungre, Pangman, Ogema, Radville, Yellow Grass) is now filled by Wilkinson. She also won the position through acclamation, taking over for Elwood White who retired from the board.

The only sector that required a vote of electors was in Weyburn where incumbents Melanie Sorenson and Brandon Tichkowsky were challenged by Hewitt-Lendrum. Sorenson captured the majority of the Weyburn votes followed by Hewitt-Lendrum who narrowly outpolled Tichkowsky for the second seat.

The only other shuffle around the

table involved former Estevan representative Jim Vermeersch taking on the Subdivision 2 duties from the retiring Harold Laich. This subdivision serves the area around Arcola, Carlyle, Manor and Wawota, and it’s now where Vermeersch resides. He had declared earlier he felt it only right to relinquish the Estevan position in light of his residency change. He too, was unopposed.

That move, along with the retirement of Shari Sutter as the second Estevan representative, left the two Estevan seats up for grabs and subsequently filled by Keating and McCrimmon.

Other board members were returned to office by acclamation and they included: Carol Flynn in Subdivision 1 (Moosomin, Rocanville, Wapella); Jim Henderson in Subdivision 3 (Carievale, Carnduff, Redvers) and Audrey Trombley in Subdivision 5 (Fillmore, Stoughton, Midale, Macoun).

The newly selected members now undergo a short series of orientation sessions that will assist them as they get more comfortable with the process of governing a wide-ranging school division with a wide range of policies and procedures. The division provides Kindergarten to Grade 12 public education services to over 8,300 students.

Additional monthly stipends of $200 are awarded for preparation work and the chairperson receives an added monthly stipend to acknowledge the extra workload placed before the person holding that position.

So far only the seven-foot tree is lit up and it's beautiful.

The cooks and staff are still preparing us delicious meals and many of them have a Christmas look or flavour to help us get in the mood. Our staff member Tina Neufeld played for us to sing Christmas songs.

We have been receiving very generous gifts of Christmas oranges. Many thanks to those who have given them. I can remember as a kid, about the only time you ever had a Christmas orange was when you got one in your stocking.

Christmas light up time was

on Monday night. We started off with a sing along with Judy Skiba at piano, then the lightup of the courtyard and then the dining room inside. Oh what a fabulous display, and this was followed by lunch.

The tables were set with Christmas platters and serviettes and we were graced with homemade cinnamon buns compliments of Lois Humenluk, plates of goodies from our cook Judy Moore and dishes of candies. Hot apple cider, tea or coffee to drink, everything was so yummy.

This was all compliments of the villa and staff and some high school kids that helped their mothers who work here. Thank you. To end off the evening we had more music and singing with Judy.
