An act of love at the lodge, just because

By Deb Andrew “Who does that?” was the response when explaining what Andrea McEwen and Kiara Scammell cooked up for the residents at the Moose Mountain Lodge.

Scammell had asked McEwen about taking their dogs to parade in front of the nursing home just to wave and say hi, but things got a bit crazy from there. On Halloween, the residents were witness to a parade of two cows, three dogs and a bunch of loving members of the community all dressed up simply

to bring a bit of joy.

Having only halter trained the cows last Wednesday and putting together some amazing costumes, Scammell and her crew not only paraded the entourage in front of the nursing home windows, saying hello and sharing the love, they realized the animals were behaving so well they decided to march on down to Carlyle’s Main Street.

“I have a heart and a passion for the elderly,” McEwen explained.

She empathized with great concern how the COVID measures would be affecting them and

how the new distance is affecting everyone.

“We just need to take time out of our lives to bring some smiles to each other,” she detailed the last few months before her Oma died on Oct. 1, “because there is a lot of pain and they just don’t understand.”

Cows dressed up like an airplane and a peacock, dogs dressed as a lion, skunk and hot dog… you may count that as ridiculous, but this group had the time of their lives and are just scheming for when and how they can do it again.

“We all need to be doing little things like this to bless others,” McEwen said as I contemplated the great amount of thought and time that went into this one event. Working with animals is not always easy and definitely not predictable.

The three dogs had never all been together before, never mind being paraded around town together. It was a huge success.

Andrea told of one of the staff who personally contacted her when she understood what was going on. Her dad was a farmer in that care home and she so hoped he

other animals as well.”

Although Andrea has taken her support dog Relik into Moose Mountain Lodge many times and will go back to that

personal contact when COVID measures are lifted, this was a great alternative, and she hopes the residents and staff enjoyed it.

Renew Fashions 2020 serving the Kipling area

A 28-year resident of Kipling and area, Loretta Demyen took over Renew Fashions on Aug. 1, with a major makeover. Renaming the business Renew Fashions 2020, Demyen is forever changing the clothing store to meet needs for everyone; young, young at heart, women and men.

The store will stock new, ‘new to you’ and liquidation items. As the current in-

stock items sell, she will be incorporating more men’s clothing in her store.

With people shopping more locally for many reasons related to COVID-19,

Demyen explained how she will be stocking the essential things people need, like socks, underwear, mittens, etc., so they do not have to make a trip to the city to just get a few things.

“I’ve sold so many mitts and toques recently because people are not wanting to go to the city if they don’t have to,” Demyen said. “It is nice to be able to have that stuff available in your own town.”

Kipling had two clothing stores at one time, and with Timeless Trends closing, Demyen felt this was a necessity for her community.

She feels especially bad for the immune compromised in Kipling and area, as leaving their homes to go shopping for needs is not a healthy option.

“I am very willing to do video calls (like Facetime) so people can see what I have in the store. I can have their items ready for pick up, will deliver locally or mail it out, because I can only imagine the frustration for those people,” Demyen empathized.

Demyen explained another aspect of her store.

“With any donation of clothing, I give people a 20 per cent off coupon to be used on any item in my store (new, used or liquidation) and if they do not want the coupon I give it to our local food bank. They will distribute them to those in need and can put them into the Christmas hampers they make up.”

Redvers Activity Centre holds bake-off

By Lisa McCullough COVID-19 has taken its toll on a lot of people, and the Redvers Activity Centre is no exception.

“Because there is someone in each group home who is either elderly or immune-compromised, and because it is a group living situation, they have had to live through vari-

ous times since March where visitors have been restricted,” states Marsha Goforth, the activity centre’s chief executive officer.

Because of COVID restrictions, the centre could not hold its annual Halloween dance for the members. They usually have approximately 160 people at the event with the Knights

of Columbus donating the catering and agencies from all over the southeast.

“It is always a blast and people get to see friends they haven't seen in a long while.

This year, in lieu of the party, the group homes decided to challenge each other to a Halloween cake bake-off. Everyone got in and got

their hands dirty baking some spectacular cakes,” said Goforth.

The residents and staff did a great job on keeping the cakes a secret from the other group homes so no one could steal anyone's ideas. They then had two of the management staff members judge each cake based on taste, creativity and

resident participation.

The cake off was judged on Oct. 29 and the prize was a $100 Dairy Queen gift certificate.

“It was a tough decision, but Walker House ended up winning the

prize with their delicious spider web cake. It didn't replace seeing old friends at the dance, but everyone put their best foot forward and really got into the spirit of Halloween!” said Goforth.

Pay it Forward Fridays at the Co-op The Southern Plains Co-op has given people another reason to look forward to Fridays.

The co-op launched Pay it Forward Fridays, when it offers something special for the public.

“Back in March, when COVID all started (in Saskatchewan), we started doing just a pay it forward, and we would do treats,” said Carol McKay, the coop’s manager of human resources.

The co-op took the treats to the fire hall, the police station and other essential services.

Next, when the businesses in the community started opening up again, the co-op started delivering to more places, because the co-op recognizes how special it is to receive a gift.

And they started preparing small giveaways for customers at their food stores, located in Estevan, Oxbow and Carlyle.

“Every location would do a package of items, and then they would randomly pick family groups, and give these packages,” said McKay. Six draws are made each Friday at every store. These packages include gift cards, hot chocolate and other items. Prior to Halloween, people were receiving chocolates and other candies.

In November, the focus is going to be on seniors.

"We’re going to pick seniors for our pay it forward Fridays. It’s been well-received and we put the winners on

Facebook, with their approval for that picture to be posted. It’s … just something fun recognizing people,” said McKay. “Pay it forward movements are really cool because it’s a surprise. It’s not planned.

It’s not this is who it’s going to go to, with names in a draw box.

It’s just random and it’s been working fairly well for us.”

There will also be six draws at each of their four convenience

stores every Friday.

Their Alameda location will have a giveaway, as will the bulk agro location in Estevan.

It means they’ll be giving away a lot of items every Friday to seniors and others in the southeast.

McKay said they want to help people out and cheer people up at this time. And as they move into the Christmas season, she thinks these gifts will have an even greater impact.

Buffalo Party the biggest problem on Moe’s horizon

By Murray Mandryk A Provincial Point of View The 2020 election went about as well for the Saskatchewan Party as it possible could.

When you accomplish the rare feat of winning four consecutive majorities — the fourth by a whopping 48-13 margin — you have done something historic.

The last NDP government also had four straight majorities, but its 1999 government was a coalition propped up by two Liberals. (As an aside, these were the last Liberal MLAs elected in Saskatchewan. The Liberals only ran three candidates in the 2020 election, who garnered slightly more than 300 votes.)

When it comes to securing four-in-a-row, unaided majority governments, this is the first time in Saskatchewan since Tommy Douglas’ Co-operative Commonwealth Federation government from1944 to 1963. That was a 19-year run. By the time of the next scheduled set-date election in 2024, the Sask.

Party will have governed for 17 straight years — also the longest run of since Douglas.

However, Monday night’s election was historic in national terms, as well. It was the third consecutive election in which the Sask. Party cracked the 60 per cent barrier when it comes to the overall popular vote. The only other dynasty to do that was Joe Smallwood’s Liberals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Finally, this is the sixth consecutive general election for the Sask. Party since it was founded in 1997.

The Saskatchewan Party has truly lived up to its name, clearly supplanting the NDP for the title of “Saskatchewan’s natural governing party.”

Given the historic magnitude of the Sask. Party win, it’s hard to imagine how this 2020 election could have gone much better for Premier Scott Moe. At one point, it even looked the Sask. Party had knocked off NDP Ryan Meili in his Saskatoon Meewasin seat. Meili was able to win his seat after mailin ballots.

Some would argue that having Meili in the legislature will create added dissention within the ranks of the NDP that seems uncertain as to where it should go.

As it stands right now, the NDP is a party that represents little more than north and inner city ridings in the two major cities.

The Sask. Party government now faces practical problems. Moe promised $849 million in new spending over the next four years in a plan calling for billion-dollar annual deficits that will add to the current $24-billion public debt. The pandemic is bound to have ongoing effects on a recovering economy.

But politically speaking, the Sask. Party seems as well positioned in its fourth term, with one possible new, glaring exception of the rise of the Buffalo Party in rural seats that were again all won by the Sask. Party.

While a reflection of public mood, this is a political problem of Moe’s own making.

Surprisingly, the Buffalo Party finished third in the popular vote despite only running 17 candidates. The former Wexit party that touts the notion of taking Saskatchewan out of the Canadian confederation even managed to finish second in four ridings, including Cannington.

Sure, Buffalo candidates finished well back of the Sask. Party in its traditionally safe rural seats and are not exactly a threat to power.

And throughout our history, we have seen other separatist partiess like the Unionest, the Western Canada Concept and the Independence Party, and none of them have every mounted to anything.

But noisy Buffaloes demand attention. They will cause Moe to further attack Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals. And while most here clearly despise the Trudeau Liberals, Moe needs better co-operation with the federal government to get through this pandemic.

In an otherwise amazing election night, Moe has found at least one new problem.

A message and a bottle

Shelley Luedtke After 57 years on the market, Coca-Cola announced its original diet drink, Tab, is being discontinued.

While it enjoyed fairly strong sales at one time, it was dethroned by the introduction of a new king of diet drinks, Diet Coke, back in 1982.

Of course even with the strong sales numbers of Diet Coke today, it doesn’t rival the granddaddy, the original CocaCola, which accounts for 26 per cent of the company’s overall soda revenue.

The sales are global — in fact there are only two countries where you can’t officially buy Coca Cola (North Korea and Cuba, although third party sales take place), making it a product that people know the world over.

For more than 120 years, people have been drinking Coke but not in

the amounts seen in the last few decades. Pop was something people drank infrequently. It was a treat. So imagine how exciting it must have been to receive a bottle of Coke while serving on the frontlines of war.

We’ve seen the documentaries, read books or heard firsthand accounts of life as a soldier: the reality of combat, life in the trenches, the sleeping conditions and the food.

Canadian soldiers had to adjust to the type of food they were being given.

Some refused to eat initially while others became ill dealing with the new diet. In time, Canadian cooks were able to work with what was available.

Efforts were made to keep troops supplied with fresh rations in the field, but when that was not possible they had Composite Ration Packs containing tins of already cooked food that needed heating up. George Blackburn, decorated Canadian veteran of the Second World War, author and playwright wrote in The Guns of Normandy: “A great deal of time is spent reading directions and experimenting with methods of heating the contents of cans of “M & V” (meat and vegetable stew), “Steak and Kidney

Pudding” (a can lined with thick dough and filled with a solidified concoction posing as chopped beef and kidney), small slabs of very hard and remarkably tasteless chocolate (one per man per day).”

Blackburn is charitable in comparison to other accounts of “unidentifiable scraps of fat and gristle mushed up with equally unidentifiable vegetables” or “turnip jam laughingly labelled strawberry or raspberry.”

I can only imagine how it must have felt to receive a parcel from home.

Maybe there were pictures, news clippings, letters and even something special from the kitchen of a spouse or mother. A container of cookies. A box of baking. And maybe, just maybe, Coke bottle bread.

Wives or mothers would bake a big loaf of bread, create a hole and then tuck a bottle of Coke inside for the soldier to find. The bread cushioned the bottle—the best packing material around. Consider the emotions that must have been swirling at the sight of these familiar treats sent so lovingly by those who had no idea where they might end up or what their loved ones would be experiencing when it arrived.

Picture the joy in hearing from home, and the recipient pouring over each and every word contained within every letter.

Running their fingers over the handwriting—writing that served as a placeholder for the loved one they were missing. The piece of paper was as close as they could get to grasping a hand or holding them in their arms.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are serving all around the world today. We don’t need to know them personally to send a touch of love and appreciation from home. A simple card means more than we can probably understand and we are heading into a great time of year to do this. A message from a fellow Canadian would be a sweet and refreshing treat — one to be cherished — just like that sweet and refreshing bottle of Coke most assuredly would have been.

On Nov. 11 we promise to never forget. In the weeks that follow we can demonstrate our commitment to always remember as we put action behind those words. That’s my outlook.

Fowl supper in Arcola was a super success

By Deb Andrew Fundraising is one of those regular things we do in North America to help support nonprofits and other entities with funds needed to thrive. Kayla Brown of Arcola Daycare Centre pulled off a super cool alternative to a sit-down meal tradition loved by many.

Over the years, the Arcola Daycare has partnered with Creative Tables to raise funds, but that was not possible this year due to COVID. Instead, Brown and her team of parent volunteers set out to hold a drive through a fowl supper. It was a hit, raising $3,429.70 for the daycare.

Vehicles lined up outside Arcola’s Prairie Place Hall to pick up their take-out portions of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, coleslaw and desserts. Drivers of vehicles were picking up supper for families all the way from Kisbey to Manor. Carli Pasichnuk also stood outside Fireside Furniture to enable local Carlyle residents to pick up their meals there.

The goal of any

non-profit daycare is to break even but the funds from the government and from parent fees only cover so much.

In Arcola, that income is earmarked for the mortgage, wages, food, phone, heat, lights and water. The fundraisers they do are specifically for the renos and maintenance that are required for the facility to be safe and feel like home for the children.

Brown explained that when the yearly inspection flags anything that may become unsafe, it needs to get dealt with.

“At this moment, all 29 of our spots for children are full,” Brown said. With five full-time and five part-time staff, this daycare runs the schedule so that there is room for casual care children on the mornings, afternoons or full days they have open.

“I am so thankful to all who helped out for this event. We have been lucky to have community members and businesses from Manor, Carlyle, Pheasant Rump and Kisbey help us in many ways over the years,” Brown explained. “We were not allowed to accept donations the way we nor-

She was very grateful for the daycare family volunteers who helped make the Fowl Supper a success.

Candidates coming out for Kisbey’s election

By Deb Andrew With 4 councillor spots up for grabs this year in Kisbey, five new candidates have joined the three incumbents in the running.

The 2016 census has the village of Kisbey at a population of 153 residents, but there’s lots of interest in being on council.

All 8 candidates will be vying for the opportunity to bring their skills and experience to the table to better this community and carry on the legacy of leadership that has been successful in the past.

James Johnston has lived in the Kisbey

area for his entire life of 65 years and in the village for over 40. Johnston has enjoyed his 20 years on Kisbey’s town council despite their struggle with maintaining the administrative aspect of their responsibilities. He is confident the great leadership in the position presently will help the current and new council develop and grow in the future.

“I am ready to have the young ones trained up to carry on with their ideas,” said Johnston. “This is an exceptional year for us because we have eight people looking for four chairs. It will be inter-

esting to know what the new candidates’ platforms are.”

Being ex-military, John Votour did not join council because he saw things that needed to be changed, he just seized a great opportunity to be a part of a strong team and serve his community the same way he has served through the Royal Canadian Legion and Elks over the years.

Even though there are challenges, Votour has enjoyed working through them with the current council. Votour enjoys his work with the council as he finds building and caring for the village itself and the

people is a gratifying way to contribute for the many years he has enjoyed living there.

Looking back to see many of the small towns she lived in as a child with her family “fold up the sidewalks,” Elisa Jackson is determined that no one in Kisbey will ever experience that, like those communities having lack of leadership or an economic downturn.

This desire to be a part of the solution is what drives Jackson to run again this year.

Her eight non-consecutive years on council have given Jackson the opportunity to contribute to beautification, playground development and encourage young families to settle here. Once society has moved past COVID, the new council will be able to forge forward to develop more for the village.

“I am happy to be available 24/7 for the community and work with council and other committees,” said Jackson as she explained her ability and time commitment.

New candidate Grant Beuckert moved to Kisbey five years ago with a job change.

Originally saying “I will never live more than 15 minutes from a Walmart,” Beuckert explained he was offered a good job that required a move and now he loves life here. Already a part of the volunteer fire department and being a medical first responder, committing his time to his community through being on council just seems like another great way to help people.

“I have ideas that I hope to share with council and the community and feel that transparently communicating those to the people is important,” Grant explained. “I would love to see more community events right in Kisbey like picnics and barbecues and things like that being planned for the future.”

Voters should understand that Beuckert sees the patterns the

current and past councils have taken and he is excited to add his ideas to take this great community in a new direction.

Sheldon Wyatt heard the village was looking for younger people to join the council and he decided to let his name stand. Cattle farming with his parents, Roger and Melinda, his home quarter is still within Kisbey village limits. Wyatt has seen the council change things for the better in the town and he is eager to learn for the first six to 12 months.

“I don’t have any pipe dreams for the village but that may change as I learn exactly what and how they do things,” Wyatt said.

Even though Mel Foy has only lived in Kisbey for 2 1/2 years, he has enjoyed meeting and working with many people in that time.

Born and raised in the Oxbow and Manor areas, Foy came back to Kisbey to semi-retire after living for about 20 years in Lloyminster.

As a heavy-duty mechanic for Nankivell Trucking, Foy was told about the need for more and new members on council.

“I made comments to some of the guys about wanting to get involved in town and was told council is a great way to do that,” Foy explained. “It will give me the opportunity to meet more people and be able to help out.”

As members of the Lloydminster Hog Club, Mel and his wife have been able to serve, fundraise and help with many activities and he wants to do that for the elderly to young people now as well as promote a great place to live and visit.

An optimistic Wyatt Hall is an eight-year operator with the R.M. of Brock and lives in Kisbey with his wife Amber and their two children.

“My main goal is to be honest and transparent with everyone in the community about what the village council is doing, where their money is going and how

things are done,” Hall voiced. “It’s a peaceful, awesome little town to live in and I don’t want to drastically change it, just grow the tax base with people, housing, businesses, which means opening up town lots and such so we can survive the next 20 years as some have to move.”

Wyatt explained that there is only so much a councillor can do but anyone can come and bring their concerns to him.

“Some people don’t care about municipal politics, but this is where we have the greatest opportunity to make positive change.”

Another lifetime resident of Kisbey and area, Brody Singleton is in the running for one of the four seats open on council. “I have grown up here almost my whole life and run a business here, so I think it is time,” Singleton said. “The village council has done a great job over the years taking care of this town and I hope some of them stay on and can show us the ropes. Further progress on having old buildings demolished and some attention to the sidewalks would be nice.”

Having the history of the old ways that have worked so well over the years with some new bodies, ideas and energy makes for a vibrant new council for Kisbey.

This year’s election in Kisbey seems to be another positive event in a seemingly difficult time in the world. Past and present, old and young working together to steward a beautiful little village in the south east.

The civic election will be Nov. 9.

Fire destroys Antler bar

By Lisa McCullough On Oct. 29 at 11:35 a.m., the Redvers Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to what they were told was a kitchen fire in the bar in Antler.

They had two engines on scene within approximately 15 minutes to a fully involved kitchen fire. According

to Fire Chief Brad Hutton, one crew attacked from the back door heading towards the kitchen and another crew started attacking from outside.

“The fire was gaining force quickly and had moved into the open bar area,” Hutton explains.

Once the fire had spread to the bar area,

Hutton said they knew with the water supply they had and the size and force of the fire, mixed together with the age and size of the building, that it was going to be a total loss.

Because of this and for safety reasons as well, the department was forced to pull their crews out of the building.

Affinity supports Carlyle Arcola’s Birnie scores first goal for new team Swimming Pool The new Eclipse Downhole Solutions Estevan U18 AAA Bears hockey team will have a lot of goals scored in its history, but the distinction of having the first regular season goal for the organization belongs to an Arcola hockey product.

Forward Carson Birnie, who is in his first year at the U18 level, notched that historic goal Sunday in Regina in the Bears 9-1 loss to the Regina Pat Canadians in the Bears first-ever regular season contest.

Birnie stole the puck from a Regina defender in the offensive zone and then quickly fired a shot past the Regina goalie.

The goal came with 2:09 to play in the first period, and made the score 2-1 at that point.

“I was coming into the zone, and their defenceman was coming out just behind the net, and he was breaking up the ice. And I saw the winger was just not too far up the half wall.

So I took the centre ice so that the defenceman had to go closer to the half-wall, and took away the middle,” said Birnie.

“So he went to go pass it over to the winger, and I picked it off, came in and got the short side on the goalie.”

Not only was it the Bears first goal, but it was his first goal at the U18 level. He still has the puck.

“Obviously it was the Bears first goal in history, so it’s always awesome to get that, and they can’t take that away from me,” said Birnie.

“It was a bit of a family rivalry (Sunday),” said Birnie. “I have a cousin on that team from last year. It was quite the rivalry, and lots of words were going back and forth between the two of us.”

The experience so far with the Bears has been great. All of the players get along really well, which makes it easier to come to practice every day and to go on road trips.

“The coaching is great. I have no problems with any of the coaches. Really good feedback, and you know you’re getting the right advice when you get off the ice. If you do something wrong, you know they’ll help you out, and you’ll go out and do it right the next shift.”

Birnie said he is pumped to see what the Bears will do in the coming years, and he said he can always tell people he had the first goal for the team.

The Bears will visit the Swift Current Legionnaires on Nov. 6, and then host Swift Current Nov. 8 in their firstever home game at Affinity Place in Estevan.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day, November 11, 2020 Submitted by Wendy Rouce and Doug Walden In 2018, we marked the 100th anniversary of end of the First World War, the “war to end all wars.”

Immediately following that, the young men and women who survived the war faced The Spanish Flu andemic, then a scarlet fever epidemic, then the Great Depression AKA the “Dirty ‘30s” (a minor economic disturbance), followed by the Second World War. (Taken from a blog by

Brendan McQuire) We believe that we are in an era of upheaval and danger, but if we take a few moments to remember, we should recognize that those we are honouring faced challenges and threats that were as great as anything we can imagine. With far less scientific knowledge and technology than we have today, they only had their beliefs, their integrity and their courage.

Those who lost everything in the wars and disease deserve our remembrance and honour, but the ones who

survived are the men and women who forged the world that we live in today.

We remember and honour those who fell in the strife that the world faced but we should also remember and honour those who survived. It was through their optimism, courage and hard work that bequeathed to us the society we have today.

There are so many stories that come from those who fought in the wars, and there have been so many wars. Stories of a veteran who drove fuel trucks along the front line so that the troops could continue the fight; POWs who survived to come home; peacekeepers who were sent out between the warring factions with six bullets and orders to account for all of them.

One veteran carried messages riding a bike and had the handlebars shot out from under him. Many of our younger veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, the diagnosis and help was not available for older veterans.

The sacrifices and victories of those who lived through those times is a lesson and inspiration in these times, difficult though we may feel the times are currently. Wearing a cloth mask to prevent transmission of a virus is not much, compared to wearing a gas mask to protect against mustard gas. Maintaining a limited quarantine and minimizing a social bubble does not seem significant compared to being in a platoon fighting for its life on the front line of a fire fight. Staying six feet away from others does not seem like a huge sacrifice with our instantaneous communication compared to travelling to Europe on a ship, which could be torpedoed at any moment, to spend years fighting for freedom.

They left friends and loved ones behind for all those years with only the odd letter for communication.

We need to remember what they went through so that we could have a lifestyle they could never have imagined. We need to respect

Submitted by Richard Krehbiel The Kisbey branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has announced that due to pandemic restrictions and uncertainty, there will be no public Remembrance Day service in Kisbey on Nov. 11.

Branch members and officials will conduct a brief formal ceremony at the cenotaph, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

We encourage everyone to view one of the many televised or online ceremonies that will be available and to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. in honour of the fallen, more than 30 of whom came from the Kisbey and Pheasant Rump First Nation communities.

Marie Donais Calder tells family’s post-war stories

sit me on his knee and tell me about helping people. He would sing You are my Sunshine,

he would pull out a photo album and show me pictures of a family in Germany and tell me their story.”

This was the memory Marie Donais Calder shared when asked how her journey to publishing the 25-book The Other Side series began. It took Donais Calder 19 years to write the series that was inspired by her father and the Second World War. The series is focused Donais Calder's father Ed Donais, who

disobeyed a direct order and helped a German family from dying of starvation.

But much of the book is also set in Alida, where Ed Donais’ wife Frances was raising their young family.

In May 1998, Calder's mother decided she wanted to go to Germany to meet the family that her husband had saved. Donais Calder, knowing how important this was to her mother, wrote letters that were translat-

ed into German, to every family with the last name Schmidt in the area where her father had been stationed all those years ago.

By the end of August 1998, Calder's mother was sitting down with the family in Germany.

“We had gotten a fax saying 'happy to have gotten your letter we are the family we are seeking,’” Calder states.

It took Calder many years before her books were published. “I de-

cided that if my work was worthy I would find a publisher, so that was another journey in itself.”

She had sent many letters to publishers but to no avail. Four years after her last attempt at finding a publisher, she received a phone call from the owner of Borealis Press.

“Imagine my surprise four years later I was down in Florida in February, and I got a call from the owner of Borealis Press and they told me they received my manuscript.”

Calder explains, they have been her publishers ever since.

Calder's first book, the Other Side of War, was published on July 17, 2010, which would have been her father’s birthday.

Calder continues to write. Her next book will be titled Forever in the Clouds and will be about the 21 men who were training as pilots in Estevan who lost their lives when the cargo plane they were returning on from Minot, N.D., crashed, killing all of them.

Calder hopes this book will be coming out in March of 2021 but cannot confirm this as of yet.

A laugh a day and COVID’s time out

By Ken Rolheiser A laugh a day keeps COVID-19 at bay!

I set out recently to ponder the pros and cons of our COVID-19 restricted lifestyle. I decided I would have to sprinkle in a little humour to make this column palatable. So watch for the hashtags.

Recently I greeted an old friend at the post office. I had a sudden urge to shake his hand, but because of social distancing we conversed from afar.

We used to pass each other exercising, he walking and I running. We would greet at community gatherings. #Covid-19 gives new meaning to “I wouldn’t touch him with a ten-foot pole.”

I miss shaking hands of old friends. I miss hugs.

I miss the freedom of travelling to family gatherings and social events.

Mother nature seems to have sent us to our rooms for a while to reflect. Will we be better when we come back out?

There are positive and negative aspects to our COVID-19 world. I am fortunate because I am an intuitive introvert

who happens to be a writer. That gives me time to do one of the things I love – writing. The pandemic has not affected my income much. Only a few newspapers have been forced to close.

Some very negative results of COVID-19 include the illegal activities of deforestation, mining, and poaching endangered species. This is often a result of flagging tourist activities compelling the unscrupulous to make money in less acceptable ways.

The global economy has been impacted, and how we work, socialize and communicate has changed. Aggressive racial segregation and unwelcome quarantine has caused racists and bigots to court violence over tolerance. Political instability is threatening our peace and security.

Damage to the world as we knew it has resulted. Hate looms over nations and stigma is attached to countries of pandemic origins. At the personal level we distrust neighbours or acquaintances for not wearing a mask or not following protocols.

#If COVID has forced you to wear a mask with your glasses, you may be entitled to condensation.

The balance we seek is in counting our blessings and listing the positives in our current situation. Our environment is improving. The air is less polluted, and traffic is light. We talk to our neighbour over the fence, and we exercise outdoors more. Gratitude can keep us from depression and rising suicide rates.

For the introspective there is daily journaling, and time to read and meditate. Even prayer has changed as we experience God in our homes rather than only in church on Sundays.

Family life has been enriched where working at home and getting to know the children better, in some cases through home schooling, has resulted. More time is available for spouses to grow together. There are many blessings to count. #In 2033 there will be a sudden jump in a number of teenagers known as quaranteens.

Communication has changed and our world is richer in technology. Tex-

ting, Facetime and phone calls have become more regular. There is so much we can do in this time out we have been given.

eryone else was wearing clothes. The human spirit grows in adversity. The steeper the climb, the more altitude we gain.

Please don’t let us forget Nov. 11, like the rest of 2020, will definitely feel and be different; one thing however, will never cease to be a matter of utmost importance. Remembrance Day. This time to honour the sacrifices made by so many reaches near-sacred proportions by so many, including me. It was because so many women and men laid down their dreams, their families and even their lives that enabled so many to retain and gain those things and even more.

Never will I forget the stories I’ve heard from

my husband’s family of how they lost their father, mother and young brother through physical abuse or starvation. One sister finally escaped captivity in Poland with the help of bullets that “taught” her to swim as she fled to the West.

(Nothing like gunfire develops the skills needed to cross a river.)

This year just three of those six siblings still live.

That war is over but tension, fighting and hatred still abound. If there was ever a need for prayer and a determination to live at peace with one another, it’s

Temples, mosques and churches are destroyed and adherents murdered. I make no apologies for being Christian but to me, that simply reinforces my obligation to live with love towards others.

God, help us always remember the cost of anyone living any

other way.

During this time of enforced isolation, we all struggle with loneliness while avoiding contact with “someone who might be infected.” In it all let’s never forget what You and so many others have given; may we never stopping exhibiting peace in the midst of chaos.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.”

The family of Audrey McDonell of Carlyle, Sask., sadly announces her passing in Regina, Sask. on October 24, 2020 at the age of 87.

Audrey will be forever loved and remembered by her family: husband of 63 years, David McDonell; daughters: Cathy McDonell and Lorna (Mel) Hill; grandsons: Joel (Morgan) Nicolay, Brayden Hill and Jamie Hill; great grandson Gavin Nicolay; brother Lorne (Valerie) Bryant; sister-in-law Shirley Bryant, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

New Cornerstone board members Maryfield Sunrise There has been some shuffling of chairs in the South East Cornerstone Public School Division’s conference room.

The stage is set not only for some shifting of regional representation, but it is also set for one election process and three more new faces for sure to be at the table when regular business is carried out by the governing body in midNovember.

Jim Vermeersch, who had been an Estevan representative, shifted positions and will now represent Subdivision 2 (Arcola, Carlyle, Manor, Wawota).

He he no longer resides in Estevan, but continues to live in the school district, in the Subdivision 2 area. The Subdivi-

sion 2 seat had been left vacant with the retirement of Harold Laich, a long-time trustee and educator. Vermeersch was the only candidate to file nomination papers, so he gets the seat by acclamation.

Incumbents Carol Flynn in Subdivision 1 (Moosomin, Rocanville, Wapella); Jim Henderson, Subdivision 3 (Carievale, Carnduff, Redvers) and Audrey Trombley, Subdivision 5 (Fillmore, Stoughton, Midale, Macoun) were all declared re-elected by acclamation.

The two seats assigned to the City of Estevan will see Kevin Keating taking up one of them as he moves over from his previous position as representative for Subdivision 4 that

includes the communities of Alameda, Lampman, Oxbow and Bienfait. Eric McCrimmon will be Estevan’s other trustee.

Keating, who now resides in Estevan, said it was a natural move for him to make due to his residency situation.

Tami Scott will replace Keating as the representative in Subdivision 4. She ran unopposed in that region.

Shari Sutter, who was also an Estevan trustee, chose to retire, citing farm and work related demands for her decision.

Another new face at the table will be Jennifer Wilkinson who will represent Subdivision 6.

She is replacing Elwood White, who also chose to retire from the board

after serving two terms as the representative for the Pangman, Ogema, Gladmar, Oungre, Radville, Yellow Grass communities.

The only election that will be required will be for the selection of two representatives for the city of Weyburn.

There are three candidates seeking the two seats, including incumbents Melanie Sorensen and Brandon Tichkowsky, who are being challenged by Norma Hewitt-Lendrum.

The newcomers will take their seats around the boardroom table on Nov. 18 when the Cornerstone board will engage in its annual organizational meeting that will be followed immediately by a regular business session.

The autumn leaves were beautiful as were the harvest landscapes but that expanse of fresh white snow also has an attraction all of its own, it’s so clean and fresh. So once it’s here to stay, let us enjoy the change and breathe in that nice fresh air as much as possible during our outings – but please watch your step there could be slippery spots.

Activities are limited because of the COVID-19 virus but Doris Erickson Is very faithful with the leadership of card Bingo,

The movie was Little House on the Prairie, which Charlotte Kovach provided. Our wonderful cooks served us with three delicious meals each day and we always enjoy our mid-afternoon and evening tea/coffee breaks. What more could we expect?

Sunrise Villa is certainly an assisted living plus facility.

We don't even need to go to the post office.

Angela Penner, our administrator, picks up our mail and also mails any outgoing letters for us. I could go on and on but I'm nearing the bottom of the page.

We are having a raffle for an afghan made by some of our residents and also a lighted Christmas flower arrangement donated by Lois Hurneniuk and June Thompson.

October Crown land sale brings in $770,000

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter The Saskatchewan Crown land sale for oil and gas mineral rights in October was worse than the previous one in August, but better that the one before that.

The Crown land sale results announced by the Ministry of Energy and Resources on Friday saw $769,849 in revenue brought in. In August, it was $2.4 million, while the June sale saw $442,000.

Land sales occur every two months are posted several months in advance. Oil companies, typically through their land agents, will ask the Ministry of En-

ergy and Resources to put a certain parcel up for bid (e.g. post it), and then bid competitively on that parcel.

This is the fourth of six oil and gas public offerings for the 2020-21 fiscal year and brings the cumulative total to $5,317,643.

This time around there were 137 leases covering 14,513 hectares posted, but only 59 parcels covering 6,329 hectares were sold.

Crescent Point Energy Corp. was the most active bidder in this offering, picking up eight leases totalling 777 hectares for $211,526, an average of $272 per hectare. It is odd that Crescent Point itself would show up on this

land sale, as the company has traditionally always used land agents to mask their activity. It also indicates that after a few years of disposing of acreage, Crescent Point is again in the game of acquiring it.

The Estevan and Swift Current areas brought in the majority of the bid activity.

The Estevan area received $362,967 in bids for 39 parcels totalling 2,574 hectares.

The highest bonus bid received in the Estevan area was on a 259-hectare lease located four kilometres west of Lampman and adjacent to the Bryant Midale Beds Oil Pool and the Bryant Frobisher Beds Oil Pool. Aldon Oils Ltd.

Alida weekly news Submitted by Edel Cowan Welcome to November folks – and it looks as if it may just be a great one. October left us being very cold and windy, must have been blowing in this nice weather. It wasn’t a very nice Halloween night (but what else is new), however the spooks, goblins, witches etc. all seemed to make it out and about just fine and collected their bags of goodies.

I did miss our annual Haunted House, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles, as they say. It will only be time to tell if that event will survive this pandemic.

Dale Anthony spent a few days at Meyronne, Sask., visiting with his sister Hazel. Their brother Wayne was also there and the brothers helped do some maintenance work for Hazel. They then went back to Moose Jaw where Wayne lives and visited with their other sister Heather.

Once again this pandemic will make an impact into events and something different will probably take place. Yes it is Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, and we very likely will not be observing in the usual way. However do remember to pick up a poppy and wear it proudly as we will continue to “Remember Them.”

In the Swift Current area, 15 of 34 posted leases sold, totalling 2,202 hectares. That brought in $209,794, averaging $95 per hectare. The highest bonus bid received in the Swift Current area was $71,971 on a 259-hectare lease located two kilo-

metres east of Pennant, adjacent to the Battrum Roseray Sand Oil Pool and the Pennant Upper Shaunavon Oil Pool.

Another lease near Pennant, totalling 65 hectares, received $29,612 or $457 per hectare, the top dollars per hectare in the Swift Current area. Crescent Point Energy Corp. was the successful bidder on both of these leases.

Crescent Point Energy Corp. was the most active bidder in this area, picking up three leases totalling 453 hectares for $108,446, an average of $239 per hectare.

Another company, 818541 Alberta Ltd. bid a total of $36,237 for two leases located

in the Kindersley area.

One lease, totalling 518 hectares, is located four kilometres south of Luseland and was picked up for $18,187 or $35/ hectare. The other lease, totalling 259 hectares, is located nine kilometres northwest of Kerrobert and was purchased for $18,050 or $70 per hectare.

The highest bonus bid received in the October public offering was $84,922 for a lease in the Lloydminster area.

This 259-hectare lease was awarded to Lacadena Land Company Inc. and is prospective for heavy oil in the Mannville Group.

The scheduled date for the next public offering is Dec. 1.

Wawota News – Hospitals Home Lottery winner Submitted by Myrna Olson Congratulations to Hayley Down on receiving the Dr. Scott Rairdon Memorial Scholarship. She is in her third year of studies at Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).

This scholarship recognizes academic excellence and animal theriogenology as well as community involvement, leadership qualities and participation in WCVM extra-curricular activities.

Hayley was also awarded the University of Saskatchewan Scholarship, which is based on academic achievement. Hayley is the daughter of Angela Down, Gordon Lucier and Doug Down and the granddaughter of Luther and Janice Boehmer and Yvonne Down.

The big news in Wawota

last week was that Heather Birnie was the winner of $504,087.50 in the add-on 50/50 lottery, the Hospitals Home Lottery. Congratulations to her. It gives us all hope that supporters in small towns can be big winners.

Wawota would like to welcome Crystal Yanyu and her family back to Wawota.

She moved to Kenosee Lake last year and now has moved back and has purchased Brian Mills’ house on First Avenue.

What a great Halloween we had. We had around 90 trick or treaters and what a polite bunch and what interesting costumes. We asked them their names and smiled when one of them said, "Well, I was here last year," and the little girl who with two older friends and she told me she was a cousin to the older boy because they

both were wearing dinosaur costumes.

UNICEF posters were sold once again to those who weren't comfortable handing out treats. This is a longrunning tradition going back to the 1970s when we held The Pumpkin Pete Party. A total of $520 was collected and mailed to UNICEF. I appreciate Darren Olson for his help with the printing and everyone who supported this cause.

This is the time of year for elections. B.C. held their provincial election on Oct. 24 and returned an NDP majority government. Saskatchewan's provincial election was last week and the Sask. Party won a majority.

Nov. 3 will be the American federal election and next week will be our local RM's and town elections. This will be your chance to have a say in our local government.
