Community shows huge support for Wyatt Hall

By Laura Kish Dec. 19 started out like any other work day for 19-year-old Wyatt Hall of Kennedy. He worked at PIC – where he has been employed since graduating from Kipling High School in June 2020 – as usual and felt fine.

He has never had any medical issues in the past so it seemed very unusual when he came home from work that day confused and not acting like himself.

“I took him to Moosomin Hospital that evening,” explains his mother Christie Hall. “After three hours in Moosomin he was sent by ambulance to Regina General Hospital in acute kidney failure. He was started on dialysis immediately.”

“The first four days in the hospital he was mainly unresponsive,” said Christie. “He would just lay there and stare blankly at the wall. The levels in his blood were out of

whack. Everything was high but calcium was low, which caused him to have three major seizures which sent him to ICU.” Christie goes on to explain: “Wyatt spent three days in ICU and then transferred to another floor. He was in hospital for a total of 12 days and was receiving dialysis almost every day. Due to COVID we were very restricted on visitation (understandable but hard as a parent). Only one of us could go in and see him.

The same parent only until he went into ICU. Wade (Wyatt’s dad) spent four days sitting in the parking lot during the day while I went in.

“Wyatt went into ICU on Christmas Eve. In ICU they allow two visitors so we were both able to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with Wyatt. There are Christmas miracles!”

“After tests, ultrasounds, scans, kidney biopsy, two dialysis port procedures and

two COVID tests, we found out his kidneys are half the size they should be and only working at one to two per cent,” explains Christie.

Wyatt now travels from Kennedy to Regina and back three days a week for fourhour dialysis treatments. The plan is to put an arteriovenous (AV) fistula (a dialysis port) in his arm which will hopefully, eventually, allow Wyatt to do dialysis at home. He will need a kidney transplant and the family has been told that could be months to years.

Wyatt has handled this whole situation very well, his mother said. He has a lot of very supportive friends and family that have been in touch with him making sure he is doing alright. He has a very positive, relaxed attitude towards all this.

"Yeah it's kind of a bad deal, but it is... what it is,” comments Wyatt.

By Lisa McCullough Carlyle Town Council held its first regular meeting of the year.

Some things that were discussed were the Municipalities of Saskatchewan annual convention package and resolutions that will be presented at the convention

this year.

The convention this year will be held virtually from Feb. 7-10. All council members, the mayor and the chief administrative officer will be attending this convention.

The colour selections for the spray park were approved and the order was submitted with hopes to have the park

open this summer.

Council also reviewed a media release pertaining to revaluation 2021 and the percentages of value changes.

In 2021 it seems that commercial, industrial, elevator, railway and resource pipeline properties are switching from 100 per cent share of value to 85 per cent of value.

“We couldn't be prouder of the young man he has become and how well he is handling everything that has been thrown at him,” comments his parents Christie and Wade.

“We would like to thank everyone for all the support we have received,” comments both Christie and Wade. “The show of support from the communities, friends, family and employers has really been overwhelming. For everyone to be so generous

in donating to Wyatt's GoFundMe page and the personal donations we have received have been absolutely amazing. We know it's been a rough year for everyone and to see the support and how generous people are really is unbelievable! It's been a very long few weeks and we have a long road ahead but we are learning as we go.”

The GoFundMe campaign, created by Jena Levai, had raised $5,010 as of Wednesday morning, with support from 62 donors. The goal was $500, a testament to the support for Wyatt and the generosity of people.

Kipling mayor looks forward to 2021

By Laura Kish What impact has Covid-19 had on the town in 2020 and how has the community been dealing with it?

In Kipling, we have been extremely fortunate that there has been little direct contact with the virus. While there have been two cases that I have heard of, neither had serious issues for those who were infected and, even better, there was no community transmission. This was, in large measure, I believe, due to the diligence that people are taking with regard to safety.

Even those who believe that the whole situation has been blown out of proportion, and there some of those, are taking precautions in order to prevent any of our more vulnerable residents from falling prey to the illness. That is laudable, and it is certainly my wish that it continue.

We have scaled back certain activities, in accordance with the SHA (Saskatchewan Health Authority) guidelines.

The curling club has suspended all of this season as they felt that it would be impossible to safely allow this sport. The skating rink has limited practice groups and has definitely increased cleaning procedures. As I understand it, at this time, games have been disallowed by SHA, but those in charge have plans afoot to re-establish these when allowed.

The community centre can only have small groups, therefore there have been no banquets or other large gatherings. Churches have largely gone to virtual services to accommodate the needs of their parishioners. Individual families are generally staying home and visiting with extended families via phone, text, email, FaceTime, or Skype.

A truly satisfying element has been the number of people who are checking on neighbours, and even providing meals to singles or those who are less able or less inclined to cook well for themselves. Note should be taken of our town staff.

provide the needed (and as possible the wanted) services during a pandemic, but our staff, both office and outside have worked tirelessly to see that everything within the town has been as normal as possible.

What do you see for the future for your town in 2021?

2021 is beginning with a bit of the gloom left over from 2020, but also with a sense of optimism. While there is no doubt that some of the town’s projects were back-burnered in a justin-case mode, we are now looking at reinvigorating our efforts to do improvements within the town.

Water and sewer upgrades and rebuilds have been ongoing for a number of years. The lagoon project has been completed. We are over a year with the new water plant (a project that saw a change in water source to deep wells as well as the extension and complete revamping of the water treatment system) and the results are well worth the time and money that it took. Replacing some-

what antiquated water meters was on the agenda for 2020, but will begin in 2021.

There will be other needed upgrades done over time to continue to bring all of the systems up to date. Recreational facilities were not forgotten in 2020 with improvements happening in the swimming pool. Several initiatives are on the drawing board, and indeed well into the planning stage for the rinks. These should see much improved access to the building as well as needed upgrades to the dressing rooms and bathroom areas.

Of course, there is always interest in more being done, and, with the new council, planning will be done to facilitate changes that, while not necessarily happening in 2021, will set the stage for years to come.

More of our community has embraced food security by getting into gardening and canning/freezing. This has been a bonus for the health of the people, not only with the fresh food but also with the sunshine and exercise that went along with growing it.

I hope that we won’t slip back into forgetting to check that there are lights on in homes where only single persons live, that we will continue to think about the food bank and those who depend upon it, that we will keep that smalltown closeness that has allowed many to thrive in what would otherwise be a dark and dreary time. That’s what made our communities survive many years ago, and that is what can again be a

light to help us going forward.

I would be amiss if I didn’t also hope that some of the regional projects that seem to be slightly stalled can get vibrant again. It would be wonderful if some of our efforts with regard to economic development would come to fruition in 2021, and it is up to the council and staff to work towards this.

What message would you like to send out to your community?

To our community, I wish to say thank-you for taking the past 10 months seriously and for being as caring toward others as you have been. We may yet have a few more months of COVID-19 to endure, but we can do it, and together, we can come out of it stronger and with a more solid sense of pride in our abilities and in our community.

Big Eagle ventures into indoor agriculture

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Long before a global pandemic made food security a widespread issue, with empty shelves across the country, Derrick Big Eagle was working on a new food-growing development.

With the combination of Estevan facing a transition away from coal-fired power generation, ever-increasing carbon taxes in the coming years raising transportation costs, and economic opportunity have come together to make the business case for producing vegetables in Saskatchewan’s sunshine capital.

A serial entrepreneur, Big Eagle has announced his latest venture, Evolution Growers.

It will start with a $20 to $30 million, 200,000 square foot “indoor agricultural facility” to be located just east of the Estevan Comprehensive School.

The intention is to expand further down the road.

Big Eagle generally refrains from calling it a “greenhouse,” saying, “There's going to be a little bit more of technology and robotics.”

Part of the research included going to the

Netherlands as part of a federal government trade mission. Several City of Estevan officials also took part. That trade mission provided an opportunity to see the latest in growing technology, which Big Eagle plans to incorporate.

Evolution Growers will be a subsidiary of Tomahawk Energy Services, a private, locallyowned firm with Big Eagle as CEO. Exactly which crops would be grown is yet to be determined, but Big Eagle did reference vegetables and produce, to be decided in the near future.

One of the most significant costs for indoor agriculture is heating.

Usually this is done with natural gas, but Big Eagle says they intend on using geothermal. He has had geothermal heat in his house for 26 years now.

“I believe geothermal is a way of the future. Has it be determined yet? No it hasn’t,” he said of their final heating decision. “I think, with my involvement in oil and gas over the last 36 years, and being a strong part of that, I think there’s opportunities to be influential in helping out with figuring out the geothermal process. And that’s what we’re going to do, as a First Nations company;

we’re going to help with this and bring what we can to the table for the planet to use. And I hope to be able to capitalize on that at the greenhouse, not only with heating and cooling, but also with electricity.”

Solar power is also being considered. Big Eagle said they would have a “negative carbon footprint.”

As a backup heat source and for supplemental heating when necessary, he said they are looking at using captured natural gas from local oil production that would otherwise be flared.

The land to be developed is currently cityowned land.

“The way I look at this is, is it's unfortunate for our coal and our power plants and what we have there. And I think it's pretty much become a reality,” he said. Having played hockey as a kid in Estevan, and operating a business in the community, he calls it his “second hometown.”

Big Eagle said there are families who, for generations, have worked in coal mining or power production, and that opportunity may not be there for their children.

This venture may provide opportunities to stay in Estevan.

“So if we can help

with the transition by creating an avenue for new jobs in a potential different sector, to make Estevan more of a diversified economy, then you know what, they don't have to lose their houses and they don't have to take a loss on them, and move somewhere else and uproot generations of families that have been living in Estevan, as it's been.”

As for the type of jobs created, and whether that would be the typical type of work associated with greenhouses, he said, “If you're not better than your competition and it's just pricing. So we're going to be better.”

“As far as the construction process and everything, it should be up to anywhere between 100 and 200 people. And then after, when it's built and up and running, it should be close to 50 to 100 people that will be employed, just for that part of the greenhouse.”

He added that there would be numerous opportunities in spinoffs, like transportation, packaging and distribution.

The intention is to break ground in spring 2021 and hopefully the first phase will be built by early 2022.

Photo submitted development of several companies in an area that do essentially the same thing or similar, related work, creates a local hub of knowledge, workforce and abilities. In addition to this project, the Deep Earth Energy Production Corp. (DEEP) geothermal project south of Torquay is also talking of greenhouses as a secondary development to their power generation primary work. In this case, DEEP is looking at using surplus heat leftover from electrical power production to heat greenhouses at a greatly reduced cost.

Asked if the Evolution

Growers and DEEP could mean the start of a greenhouse cluster for Estevan, both Big Eagle and Ward spoke in favour of the idea.

Big Eagle said, “We welcome that. Something has to start it off and make that initial plunge.

And we’re there, with it.”

“With the food insecurity issues, the carbon footprint and the coal transition that is possibly going to slow the city down, we acknowledge all that. And I think this indoor agricultural facility, helps cure all those issues,” Big Eagle concluded.

We haven’t prepared for COVID-19 vaccine

By Murray Mandryk The good news is that the light at the end of the tunnel in the COVID-19 fight might be something other than the proverbial train.

The province had a slow start with administering the vaccine, and clearly, things aren’t going as well as hoped. It’s largely because only a fraction of the doses allotted to Saskatchewan have made their way into people’s arms. It’s also because the overall allotment to Saskatchewan hasn’t been enough.

There is some progress being made at getting that Moderna vaccine that doesn’t require minus-80 C storage to the north.

But with only 150 to maybe 240 vaccines being administered each day, it is going to take a ridiculously long time to immunize an entire province of nearly 1.2 million people. As a result, many more are likely to get sick or even die as we await this to happen.

That the Saskatchewan Party government was making some headway last week at getting the vaccines to northerners and frontline health care workers is obviously a positive. It’s critical to first address those most at risk. And the one thing this virus has surely taught us by now is those most at risk are those who come into close contact and those cloistered together in remote, small communities.

But by now, it should have also taught us to be both more prepared and more vigilant than we have been. And it’s here where Premier Scott Moe’s government has been falling short.

The Saskatchewan premier and other premiers across the country do have a right to be frustrated by the federal Liberal government’s inability to get the vaccines in the hands of the province quicker.

That Prime Minister Justin Trudeau complains about also being “frustrated” by the vaccine rollout largely points to the reality that no one properly prepared for what we faced.

Really, there was no particular reason why we didn’t have a better distribution plan in place — especially given that we had months to devise one as we awaited the arrival of an effective vaccine.

But preparedness has never been exactly the strength of governments. This pandemic has surely reminded us of that.

For example, where a vast disproportion of deaths have occurred is in personal care homes — something that many chalk up to the reality of housing elderly people with underlying health conditions.

But unless you’re, sadly, of the mind that we shouldn’t be doing our utmost to protect the elderly and vulnerable, what this COVID-19 has done is underscore our past failings.

For a decade now, we’ve been all too aware that crowded senior homes were a recipe for disaster for our most vulnerable.

But especially when it comes to private nursing homes, we haven’t done our utmost. We did what seemed most cost-efficient and affordable and we now may be paying a price for it.

At best of times, governments tend to get distracted — sometimes simply by their own rules they choose not to follow.

This was the case in the recent rash of resignations across the country — including that of former highways minister Joe Hargrave — for flouting strong government recommendations that advised everyone else to stay home at Christmas.

Good governance is all about focusing on what needs to be done.

Moe’s Sask. Party government needs to get back to that.

All this…and dressed up, too

Shelley Luedtke I have some really great gift-givers in my life; those that seem to find the perfect present no matter the circumstance.

But a friend of mine got me something this year that she couldn’t have known would put the biggest smile on my face. Included in a gift bag filled with all sorts of wonderful things was a package of penguinshaped pasta.

I was about nine years old the first time I remember seeing a penguin. It was at a theme park where my family stood and watched the elegant black and white creatures dive, swim and wander throughout the habitat that had been created for them.

To be honest, although I enjoyed the experience, it was the sharks, dolphins and

whales that I was far more excited about and my impatience to get to those exhibits was probably noticeable.

In the years since, I have had many opportunities to see penguins but they have never been an animal I specifically sought out. Until a few summers ago.

We were visiting a large zoo the day they were opening a new penguin habitat. Long lines wrapped around the building indicating the excitement people held for seeing the flightless birds, so we decided to head to other areas of the zoo which weren’t nearly as crowded. Near the end of our day as we wandered back near the penguin enclosure, we noticed there was now a very short line so we decided to go in. It took less than two minutes and I was completely enamored.

Perhaps it was the way the habitat was designed that caused me to see penguins differently.

There were no big barriers or Plexiglas walls separating the animals from the visitors, just well created pathways that kept us all where we needed to be.

against or tapping annoyingly on windows. Instead, it felt like we were given a chance to observe, not gawk at, the penguins.

I was taking some video and as I rounded a bend it seemed as if one was determined to make the shot as he (well, it might have been a she) seemed to ‘wave’ at me at the perfect moment. Now I don’t want to anthropomorphize too much here, but it made me feel like he was trying to get my attention and as a result I was seeing, actually seeing, a penguin for the first time.

I gave attention to the sound, the gait, and the interaction I was privileged to witness and was now enthralled by.

Awkward walker; great swimmer. Loud confrontations; obvious affection.

Humorous sounding; classy looking.

January 20 is Penguin Awareness Day. Although it’s likely not the first creature that comes to mind where we live, this time of year people are encouraged to be a little more like them. Well, more accurately, to walk like them. The secret to avoiding slips and falls on the ice is to impersonate a penguin: bend a bit, point feet out slightly, walk flatfooted and take shorter,

slower steps. Great advice.

But there might be other ways in which it could benefit us to act more like penguins as well, at least according to those who have studied them.

Penguins are effective communicators.

They are known to be quite vocal, engaging in lively conversations and even noisy arguments, but they seem to do it fairly and are able to resolve differences effectively.

Even after ‘getting in each other’s faces’ they come together to protect each other from predators and from the cold weather.

Their differences are set aside to ensure the safety and well-being of the wider community as they are committed to sustaining their support network.

It would be great, wouldn’t it, if this were more of the guiding principle for all of us.

Will we disagree?

Of course. Argue? It’s bound to happen. Then come together? An absolute necessity. Just think how much better off we all might be if we not only walked the walk, but talked the talk of a penguin. Class and elegance at its best. That’s my outlook.

Saskatchewan COVID-19 measures extended another two weeks until Jan. 29

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter While Ontario has told everyone to stay home, and Quebec has implemented a curfew, Saskatchewan has decided to maintain a steadyas-she-goes stance with regards to public health restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Scott Moe and chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab announced Tuesday that current restrictions will remain in place a further two weeks, to Jan. 29.

Saskatchewan has seen its new cases rise significantly since Christmas. Saskatchewan had a seven-day average of 317.6 new cases per day as of Tuesday, the highest it has been to date. There’s been a steady climb since Dec. 30, the most recent low point, when the sevenday average was 152.6.

In the two weeks since that date, the seven-day average has doubled.

This was not surprising, however, as Moe noted there were expectations of a rise after the holidays. Shahab noted almost every province has seen a similar rebound after the holidays.

Shahab said, “We're seeing the outcome for primarily gatherings that happened over the holidays.”

To reduce high case numbers, he said, “Everything needs to slow down again.”

Moe said: “We did

expect that there would be a bump in numbers post the holiday season.

We didn't expect that it would be 100 per cent universal compliance, however we hoped for that. But we did see with these very sets of measures that were in place, a lowering of the rate of transmission in December and we're hopeful that we'll see that same lowering in a couple of weeks ahead.”

“Yes, there are areas of the nation that have additional measures in place, but most certainly, the measures in place in Saskatchewan are not insignificant, in any way.

And they did work,” he said, pointing out that throughout December, case counts had fallen.

Shahab pointed out that while most people complied with the orders restricting visitation and groups, about 10 per cent did not. And the modelling predicted the current COVID-19 case numbers if that many people did not comply.

“I think we really have to course-correct this week, and see a decline in case numbers the next week. Otherwise, we could be in a critical situation.”

Shahab continued, “I think we have to be very cautious now, even more so than we were in mid-December, but with our collective actions, we can turn this around, without having to go into significant lockdown, but it requires all of us to take

the collective action.”

He noted that while case numbers had declined in December, that may not have been a true picture, as the testing numbers were also down.

“We have another two weeks with the current measures in place.

But we need universal compliance, to see if this can turn around. Otherwise, the other options that remain, beyond the current public health measures, that we are seeing being enacted across many other jurisdictions across Canada, are quite stringent,” Shahab said. “But we can turn this around, by universal compliance by all of us, which actually did happen in December.

We were on an upward trajectory. It leveled off with the same measures we have in place now.”

With regards to increasing restrictions, Moe said, “There’s consequences to that, as well,” referencing the impact on individuals’ mental health, and on youth.

Moe added, “If we're not able to start to bend this trajectory down by the end of January, Dr. Shahab may have some more difficult decisions to make. If we are able to start to bend that trajectory down, and that would be a positive thing and we're very hopeful that we'll see results.”

He said he spent a few weeks at home in Shellbrook, and in speaking to people, he found “a certain level of COVID fatigue.” That included himself.

“We have to ask people to, although they may be fatigued, with the COVID measures that are in place, we need them to adhere to them just a little bit longer, until we can ensure that we have access to the majority of Saskatchewan people with this vaccine. So we have some, some weeks and likely a couple months ahead of us.”

This will allow accelerated distribution of the vaccines. In the first quarter of this year, Saskatchewan is expecting 190,000 doses, enough to vaccinate 95,000 people, or eight per cent of the population. In February, 60,000 doses are expected and the Saskatchewan Health Authority will be aiming for 2,000 vaccinations per day, up from about 1,000 per day currently.

There's a one-to-twoweek lag between case numbers. So the high case numbers we saw over the last three days will impact, likely on higher hospitalizations and ICU admissions, a week or two from now.

So, I think those are all things you need to watch. We need to protect ourselves our families, our communities and the most vulnerable, as the vaccination program, keeps rolling up and gives that additional protection that ultimately will enable us to get out of the pandemic,” Shahab said.

What a year 2020 has been for the staff and residents at Moose Mountain Lodge. Amongst the chaos of the year, trying to accommodate regulations and keeping in touch with family and friends the Christmas spirit was in short supply. However, due to the warm and kind hearts of Carlyle and the community, the Christmas mood came back in full in the most unique ways. Even though we weren’t able to have many decorations, we were blessed to get cards, letters and ornaments from the Carlyle Elementary School, Kennedy School, Cornerstone Family and Youth, and many other community members; big thanks to them and their handwritten letters, it really touched each resident’s heart during the holiday. Normally, we host a Christmas Tea for the community but that was not to be the case this year. While we did have some in- staff singing and caroling which is always fun during the holidays- our building had a joyful visit from some community who built snowmen outside the front windows. Now, when we look outside the front windows we see a snowman worker, a snowman and a reindeer; another thanks to all of those who worked on them.

Food was another that we received with gratefulness and appreciation. The Catholic Women’s League, donated Christmas oranges and the Co-op, dainties and Cheezies; thank you to both. There is nothing like eating Christmas oranges and dainties to keep the holiday in everyone’s heart.

In continuation, the Friends of Moose Mountain Lodge volunteer group spearheaded the idea of gifting each resident a handmade quilt for their annual Christmas gift. They partnered together with the Bits and Pieces Quilt Club and the Club lovingly made 42 handmade quilts. These beautiful quilts were given to each resident on Christmas morning to keep them warm during the winter.

As well, The Bargain Shop and the Carlyle Co-op also made gift bags with a blanket, a Christmas ornament, chocolates, and a card for each resident from their Toy Drive fundraiser.

Thank you to all of these groups and businesses for their generosity.

Drive byes were also a very popular event in the holiday season.

Thank you to the RCMP, Fire Department, and Santa Clause for saying a cheerful hello to our residents on their community Christmas parade. Thank you also to OneChurch.ca for their vehicle parade and caroling. It was enjoyed by all.

Lastly, another thank you to James and Christy Hislop for donating a giant box of 42 Usborne adult painting books to the home. Art is a very enjoyable program in the facility and having more options is always welcome so thank you!

2020 has finally come to a close and this community has made it a very memorable one.

Just want to say one last big thank you to everyone involved in creating a wonderful holiday season for our residents. We also apologize if we missed anyone in this message. We did our best to keep track of all the hands involved and are sorry if anyone slipped through the cracks.

New name…same service for Kipling Leisure Services

By Laura Kish As of Dec. 31, the Kipling and District Parks & Recreation Board was dissolved. The Town of Kipling thanks the latest board members for their years of service, including Larry Lesiuk, 25 years, Kim Zepick, 23 years, Norma Ferch, 20+ years, Darren Szakacs, 18 years, Kevin Zepick, seven years, and Dennis Cacho, six years.

Your contributions to recreation in Kipling have been very much appreciated.

According to a 1981 bylaw, Kipling and District Parks & Recreation was formed on April 9, 1981, although it repeals a bylaw, 7-1967, so it appears there was a board of some sort as far back as 1967.

Bylaw 2-1981 says “ The board may make recommendations to

the parties hereto regarding the passing of bylaws, rules or regulations as it may deem necessary on all matters connected with regulations, management supervision and operation of programmes, areas, facilities, maintenance and equipment under its control; as set down by the parties to this agreement.”

The boards have the management, operation and control of programmes, areas, facilities and equipment which may vary from time to time to be designated by joint resolution of the parties to the agreement. It also talks about making recommendations to council on the improvements and future expansion of recreation facilities.

This agreement was between the Town of Kipling, RM No. 124 and RM No. 94.

So basically the

board was formed to manage the operation and maintenance of the recreation facilities in Kipling along with making capital recommendations or needs to council.

The 1981 bylaw was updated in 2016 to reflect a new agreement due to the withdrawal of one of the partners.

The mandate of the board did not change.

Over the years, there have been a few acting as recreation director, including Dean Robson, Kelly Mentanko, Craig Francis and Perry Hubbard, with their office being at the Kipling Arena.

The most recent staffer is Susan Hengen acting as recreation programmer. Her office is now upstairs in the Kipling Professional Building.

Taking the place of board members are Town of Kipling council members.

Why the decision was made to dissolve Kipling Parks & Recreation?

“From the town council’s perspective, they decided that they wanted to have more control over the management of the facilities from an operating standpoint and from a capital standpoint,” said Gail Dakue, Town of Kipling chief administrative officer.

“There has now been a joint recreation committee formed of the RM of Kingsley, RM of Hazelwood and the Town of Kipling.”

“These council members will be looking at more of the strategic direction for the facilities,” said Dakue.

“The Leisure Service Department will become a department of the town, similar to public works, administration, etc. and we will handle the operations of it.”

All programs will operate the same from here on, including the summer program, Artrageous and FitKids and things like that…. just under a new name.

What kinds of changes have you seen in the time you've been with Parks & Rec? “When I began employment with Kipling & District Parks and Recreation Board in October of 2006, I was hired as a recreation programmer,” said Hengen. “At that time, the board had identified a desire to include a focus on programming for residents of the community as well as the other duties of the position.

Throughout the past 14 years, we have had a variety of programs reaching all demographics of the population which have been a wonderful addition to our community.

“Some examples of these programs are

weekly older adult fitness classes, youth curling program, FitKids active after school program and our children’s summer activities program. We have also seen major capital upgrades to all of our recreation facilities throughout this time, as well as the addition of the community walking trail.”

What sort of improvements have been made?

“Improvements that have been made: all of our recreational facilities have seen improvements over the past 14 years. The Kipling Arena has had low emissivity ceilings installed over both the skating and curling ice surfaces with commercial fans added to improve air quality and reduce condensation, the lobby had the flooring and ceiling upgraded, public washrooms in the lobby were renovated, compressors on both skating and curling plants were replaced, rubber matting was installed throughout the basement, both facilities were insulated, furnaces were replaced.

“At the Kipling & District Swimming Pool, the washrooms and change rooms were renovated, filter systems of the pools upgraded, awnings upgraded, hot tub replaced, boilers and heat exchangers replaced, and main circulation pump replaced. At Lions Park (the ball diamonds), all fencing has been replaced and upgraded, fence cap installed, three of four diamonds have a shale infield, sewer tank replaced and upgraded, and a new kitchen facility was added.

“In Bell Park, the former play structure was removed as it was unsafe and replaced with a new play structure geared to two to eight-year-olds. As well, the surface of the tennis courts was upgraded about eight years ago and pickle ball lines were included, as well as perma-

nent basketball standards were upgraded.

“Kipling Campground also saw many additions and improvements throughout the past 14 years, as eight pull-thru sites were added, the shower house was replaced and nine sites were upgraded to include sewer. The community walking trail was one of the most recent improvements to the community, giving residents and visitor to the community the opportunity to enjoy a stroll on the south and southwest sides of the community, linking some of the recreational facilities,” Hengen explains.

What new programs have been started in the past 15 years?

Many programs were developed over the past 14 years. Some that continue to be popular are: older adult fitness classes, youth curling program, FitKids (active after school program), Artrageous (after school art program), chair yoga for seniors, Summer Slam Volleyball Skills Camp, Holiday Lights Contest. Other programs like various fitness classes now continue to be offered by trained individuals in the community. Our children’s summer activities program is the longest lasting program in the community and has been running for over 25 years.

What do you see happening differently with Leisure Services over the next five years, if any?

The mission statement of the former Kipling & District Parks and Recreation Board, defined in October of 2017, was to provide leadership to create an active and engaged community through inclusive recreational programs and quality facilities for the community of Kipling and the surrounding district. I think the intention will remain the same,” says Hengen.

Moose Mountain Karate opens dojo The Moose Mountain Karate Club in Carlyle has relocated to their own dojo. Prior to the pandemic, the club held classes in the Carlyle Elementary School gymnasium for more than 25 years. However, like many organizations affected by health regulations and new protocols, school facilities were no longer open for use by outside groups, so typical karate classes ended in early March.

Club members continued to train in virtual classes when available, but everyone was eagerly awaiting a return to dojo training.

In early May 2020, the club instructors realized that big changes would have to be made to continue having inperson karate classes.

As luck would have it, space was available in a shop bay right beside Living Skies CrossFit. After securing that space, the club began

ate floor for martial arts practice. The existing floor in the bay was solid concrete, so

the club arranged to purchase martial arts mats to cover it. This has been the single

most costly component to opening the dojo.

The club has been successful in several grant

applications and several personal donations were also received to help the club open its doors for classes on October 20, 2020. Moose Mountain Karate Club now has 50 registered members from Carlyle, Whitebear First Nation, Manor, Redvers, Arcola, Wawota, Stoughton, and Alameda.

The instructors and members of Moose Mountain Karate Club would like to thank all the volunteers who worked hard to prepare the dojo for classes, and for continuing to help with the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the dojo. The club would also like to thank the residents of Carlyle, the Town of Carlyle, the RM of Moose Mountain No. 63, Affinity Credit Union, the Arcola Optimist Club, the Carlyle and District Lions Club, and several private donors for their generous support.

Exciting new year for Carlyle Golf Course

By Deb Andrew The Carlyle Golf Course has reason to be excited for the upcoming year.

In an interview with Terri Fields about her new position as clubhouse manager, some board members present echoed their excitement about this new year.

Along with the chic new floors, walls and décor within the clubhouse, new ideas are also in the works.

Christy Jarvis, Bertha Isleifson and Mitch Wilcox all reminisced about the great year in 2020 and are looking forward to working with Fields to offer Carlyle and area another fantastic year.

Moving to the village of Kenosee Lake in 2015 from Radville, Fields has fallen in love with this area of the province and

she shared, “I love the people. Golfers are the best!”

Working at Golf Kenosee last year gave her a taste of the golfing culture.

“Being outdoors, great views, relaxing and getting some exercise at the same time with friends/family – that is perfect,” she said.

You will recognize Fields from King’s Department Store, but she says she will be concentrating on the golf course full-time as soon as the weather permits, returning to the King’s family of staff when the season is over.

Fields will work closely with the board to develop and promote the events for the season, manage the staff and take care of all clubhouse operations. As in previous years, the tarps will be taken off and the grounds prepared for

So worth remembering

Now close to the middle of a new month, I’ve begun seeking out, duplicating and sorting out pictures I have collected over the years.

Of particular interest was an aged (almost as aged as I am) picture of me and my oldest brother. If I’m correct that picture was snapped in about 1947. It’s brown and white and faded now but it’s still very legible.

Sounds a bit like me except that I’m grey now.

Another fairly “golden oldie” is one of our two sons riding on a neigh-

Two weddings followed.

Adding the names and photos of two wonderful young men to the family provides even more delight. The third wedding is probably a decade or so away and I cringe to think of how old I’ll be on that occasion.

Yes, there is so much to remember and so much worth remembering. Sorting through boxes and picture frames is a slow but soulsoothing exercise.

While sad memories do arise, the blessing of God overrides it all.

Remembering always has its joys but also its sorrows.

Three in-laws, the son of a niece and nephew, and dear friends have passed on but I have been determined to remember the joy of knowing and enjoying them while they were here. Their photos and mental pictures help me accomplish that.

Governments announce $9.8 million for ag research Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter As the leadoff speakers in the CropSphere zoom online conference on Jan. 12, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food MarieClaude Bibeau and Saskatchewan's Premier Scott Moe announced $9.8 million in funding for 39 crop-related research projects through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF).

“Despite challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada’s crop sector has continued to work hard to ensure Canadians and families around the world have access to high-quality products,” Bibeau said. “Investing in research helps producers grow the food the world needs in the most efficient and sustainable way possible.

These applied research projects will help producers innovate and create growth."

Moe spoke of his experience in getting a degree in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan and of farming near Shellbrook. He said it was an important investment in one of the most important industries. He noted the development of lentils, as an example.

“I can tell you that

I have very deep appreciation of how crucial crop science and research is to not only Canadian agriculture, but also Saskatchewan agriculture. And I would say further, to the world,” Moe said.

Last year Saskatchewan produced its second-largest crop on record, at just over 39 million tonnes, and it is now routine to produce over 30 million tonnes per year, Moe said.

“Our scientists and our researchers have made a huge difference in the lives of millions of people to billions of people around the world,” Moe said.

He noted an article last February on a website called Human Progress which pointed out, as Moe said, “The battle to feed humanity has been won.”

Between 1968 and 2017, the world’s population grew by 113 per cent, from 3.5 billion to 7.5 billion, yet over that same time period, the average global food supply, per person, per day, grew from 2,300 calories to about 3,000, an additional 27 per cent.

Moe said it was absolutely stunning to realize, “for most of human history, far too many people have lived on the very edge of starving. And today, famine has virtually disappeared.”

He said Saskatchewan has played an outsized role in making that happen, and the province’s researchers are “the very best in the world at what they do.”

“Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector has incredible growth potential and this targeted investment will help our producers and agribusinesses innovate to continue to deliver what the world needs,” Moe said. “This investment supports the bold goals in the Saskatchewan Growth Plan that will see our crop production increase to 45 million tonnes, agriculture exports increase to $20 billion and value-added revenue increase to $10 billion.”

Support for ADF projects is awarded on a competitive basis to researchers looking to examine areas of importance to Saskatchewan producers.

In addition to funding provided by the federal and provincial governments, the following industry partners have contributed a total of more than $3.1 million in funding to these projects: Western Grains Research Foundation, Saskatchewan Alfalfa Seed Producers, Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission, Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, Saskatchewan Oat Development

Commission, Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, Alberta Wheat Commission and Manitoba Crop Alliance.

“Sask Wheat has invested $12.9 million of producer funding through the ADF process since 2015,” Sask Wheat chair Brett Halstead said in a release. “The program provides opportunities for quality, innovative projects that will ben-

The ADF funding process allows us to collaborate with other Prairie crop commissions, connect with researchers and fund projects that are developing crop varieties with greater yield potentials and resistance to common pests and environmental stressors.
