Hereford bull from Wawota wins U.S. national title

By Laura Kish Chad Wilson of Wawota is no stranger to working with cattle. He grew up on the family farm outside Wawota and has been involved with raising cattle all his life.

As a young child, he participated in various junior cattle functions, both locally and nationally. Following high school, Wilson enrolled in a two-year agricultural program in the U.S. Upon returning home he worked in the oilfield and continued to be an integral part of the day-to-day operation on the farm.

Following his father’s death in 2006, Chad then committed to full-time farming and continues the farm operation under the registered name of Haroldson’s Polled Herefords.

The herd consists of 180 head of cattle. The cattle are marketed through two annual sales, the bull sale in April and a female sale in October, as well as events such as Agribition and by private treaty.

Over the years, Haroldson’s Polled Herefords have been awarded many championships, including being named Premier Breeder for nine consecutive years at the Agri-

In 2019, he raised one particular bull, named Haroldson’s United 33D 36G. United was first shown as a calf at Agribition, winning the President’s Cup, an all breeds bull calf competition as well as being awarded the title of National Grand Champion bull at the Polled Hereford show.

Following the show, the bull was sold to current partners, Hoffman Ranch in Nebraska and Poplar Meadows Angus in B.C.

United was recently shown at The Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City which is the national show for various breeds. The national show is usually held in Denver but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was moved to Oklahoma. Again, due to COVID, Chad was unable to attend the show where he was also invited to judge.

“I missed out on the opportunity to judge the Junior Hereford Show,” explains Wilson, who goes on to say, “I’ve judged shows all across

Canada but this would have been my first opportunity to judge a major show in the United States.”

And so, from the internet at home on the farm, he watched the bull show via livestream.

Haroldson’s United 33D 36G was selected as the U.S. National Champion Polled Hereford Bull.

The national champions from all breeds are then qualified to enter the Supreme Show. Haroldson’s United was selected the Supreme Bull of all breeds. As one

friend described, “it is like winning the Stanley Cup.” “This is the first time we’ve had a U.S. National Champion,” says Wilson. “It was very exhilarating and pretty overwhelming.” You could say he threw his hat up in the air during that special moment of the win.

“It’s such a sense of accomplishment,” comments Wilson. “And I’m very thankful for everyone helping out along the way.”

This makes it all worthwhile, working with the cattle every day.

Alida man wins big with Riders Foundation’s draw

By David Willberg Dave Carriere says his lucky number has been seven. His wife Shanna’s lucky number is four.

But now they have a new lucky number: 37.

Carriere won the $602,000 jackpot in the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation’s Chase the Ace draw last Friday in the final week for the fundraiser. Needless to say, it was quite a thrill for the Alida resident and devoted Rider fan.

Carriere purchased tickets each week during the promotion, except for one week, and he was angry at himself the week he missed out.

“I called my wife, and I said … ‘I forgot to buy my tickets.’ She told me ‘You’ll be all right.’”

He told her and other people that they were

going to win the 50-50 draw, which was understandably met with skepticism. But she reminded him to never stop buying tickets.

The action last Friday started when Regina’s Lorena Harlos-Razynski had her name drawn for the $47,888 weekly prize, but she didn’t find the ace of spades from the 20 remaining cards in the virtual deck. Each card was in an envelope with a number on it, and people had to select the envelope that contained the ace.

Since it was the final week, the draw kept going until someone found the ace. Two other people tried unsuccessfully, and then Carriere’s name was drawn for his chance.

Carriere wanted envelope No. 7, but it was gone. Ditto No. 4. So he blurted out 37, and

inside was the ace of spades, with the image of Roughriders quarterback Cody Fajardo.

Carriere thinks his late brother Richard, a long-time Riders’ fan, was telling him to go with 37.

“We still at this time don’t know what 37 had to do with our lives, other than it put us $600,000 richer,” said Carriere.

“I’ve already ordered my new Rider jerseys with 37 on them.”

When Carriere received the call to tell him he had a shot at the $602,000 jackpot, he was about to lay down and rest before going to work on a drilling rig for Tundra Oil and Gas, where he is employed as a drilling consultant.

“I never, ever take my phone into the bedroom with me, but for some reason I did that night. The phone rang, and I looked at it, and it was just a number, no

name on it, and I almost didn’t answer it.”

When he couldn’t hear them right away, he nearly hung up. But then he heard it was for the Chase the Ace draw, which made Carriere very excited.

He says he’s been a lucky guy when it comes to raffles and other draws, including a big prize at the Bear Claw Casino about a decade ago.

Carriere doesn’t have any plans for the money, but he’s not going to retire.

“I’m going to keep working and my wife’s going to keep working.

Maybe when we get to 60 years old, we’ll retire, but right now, I’m only 55. I love my job too much to walk away,” said Carriere.

His dad is in his 80s and he still goes to work every day.

“I called him that night right after I won,

Proceeds from the

50-50 will be directed to minor football projects in the province. Carriere said it’s a great feeling to know that the money raised goes to a great cause. And if the Riders Foundation were to have a Chase the Ace draw or a similar initiative again, Carriere would purchase tickets.

SK Arts Grant awarded to Robert McArthur

By Deb Andrew From when he was a little boy, Robert McArthur of the White Bear First Nation has been drawn to the cultural side of his family’s heritage and having always been told where he comes from, he has had his feet grounded in identity.

“That grounding in the beginning helped me to never forget it along the way,” he elaborated as he described raising triplet daughters with his wife and seeing them on to success and growth in their life.

It was recently announced that McArthur would receive an SK Arts Grant for a new album of lullabies that he has written.

Laughing about the stories he hears from his now adult children that he never knew about at the time, he was grateful that they raised their daughters to experience life’s ups and downs knowing their identities as well.

McArthur’s mother was a Nakota Cree woman and his father was from the Dakota Cree First Nation, and he gave a deep history lesson about the distinctions, divisions and dia-

lects that determine the identity they embrace.

Although we learn about our First Nation history in our schools, McArthur said cultural connectedness is a topic he speaks on and would like all First Nation and white people to truly understand as it is beautiful, and the young people need to know.

Taught about the importance of native songs and that they have songs for everything from his grandfather, McArthur was intrigued by lullabies and the very beginning of language presented to children from the mother in the womb. His Lakota Uncle from South Dakota, one of his greatest mentors, has shared the wisdom about how lullabies connect you to your language, your mother and your identity, which is the actual energy you are born with.

“Being a mover and connecting with people in deep sharing and learning conversations is what I love,” McArthur explained. “When we connect with people like that we call it ‘making relatives’ and when I slow down and am patient to listen, people are willing to share knowledge. From the Black-

foot people, the Arapaho people, the Lakota people, the Dakota and Nakota tribe to all the Cree people I have been able to pose the simple question: ‘Have you heard lullabies, where did they come from and what did they mean to you?’”

Unfortunately, McArthur said there are not a lot of people who have kept them alive and passed them on to their children, “They fell asleep,” he said “but I have met a few people that had kept one alive and they shared them with me.”

He spoke of a recent elder family member passing on where he had an opportunity to talk with a young nephew who is expecting a baby. Excitement rose in his voice as he explained how he got to congratulate this young man and share the idea of lullabies, encouraging him to share this with the baby in utero. The young man’s eye were wide as he had never heard this before. McArthur shared a lullaby that would connect with the baby and calm them down to give the mother rest as she carries the precious child.

“You are born with two energies,” he ex-

plained. “The first one is from the beginning of being inside of your mother and the second comes closer to delivery.

That is the one you are born with. Some people call it the soul, we call it your spirit and you will live with it your whole life.”

He explained how the mother takes care of that spirit to begin with and then hands it over to others to train, learn and grow.

The SK Arts grant awarded will be essential in helping McArthur to finish the recording and marketing of his album of lullabies to the world. As COVID will not allow him to travel to where he records in studio and trying to do it virtually just did not work well at all, he is still planning on how to finish the entire project and can hardly wait until things open back up.

He has created 30 lullabies so far and has 15 recorded.

“The Nakota language has so much sound to it,” McArthur explains, “and it gives our young people a head start to their identity.”

He seemed a little sad that some young people really don’t care but he realizes some are start-

The $16,000 grant will allow McArthur to build on his existing work of creating lullabies, recording them, as well as designing a book and presentation series.

Presently McArthur teaches language at Pheasant Rump First Nation Middle School.

His gratitude for the ability to continue this work was so strong and he is excited to share his creation with the world.

Not only did he let me listen to a lullaby during our interview which stated, “I will see you

have your language”, he sent a picture of the possible cover of the album and emailed a lullaby that is almost finished named “This Child is a Gift.”

McArthur has an idea to sing with an orchestra to have the instruments connect with the sounds but when you hear his voice, the sounds and rhythm, you will agree it is calming and empowering at the same time.

Service disruption at Arcola Health Centre extended The Saskatchewan Health Authority has announced the temporary disruption to emergency and acute care services at the Arcola Health Centre has been extended until further notice.

In a news release issued by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Thursday afternoon, it was noted the

decision was made due to active COVID-19 activity in the area and required realignment of health services to support patient care.

Lab and x-ray services at both facilities are not affected by this disruption.

The disruption in Arcola started on Jan. 15 and was scheduled to come to an end on Jan.

30. At the time, the Saskatchewan Health Authority said the service disruption was due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the Weyburn area.

Weyburn’s hospital returned to normal operations last week and is able to admit COVID and non-COVID acute care patients again.

But that didn’t re-

sult in services being restored in Arcola.

Residents in the Arcola are may visit the emergency department in Estevan, Redvers, Kipling or Weyburn.

Non-urgent health related questions can be directed to the provincial HealthLine by calling 8-1-1.

at Arcola Health Centre and Radville Marian Health Centre, as well as inpatient admissions at Arcola, as soon as possible. At this time, they are not able to confirm a date.

Things may be tough for Sask. in COVID-19 fight

By Murray Mandryk Saskatchewan may finally be getting tougher in some aspects of COVID-19 fight.

Some still question whether it’s really necessary.

For others, however, the questions are: Why did it take so long? Why isn’t the government getting even tougher?

People fed up with restrictions and wanting a break will likely be especially frustrated with the government’s decision to extend the pre-Christmas restrictions limiting household gatherings to immediate family and outdoor gatherings to 10 people to Feb. 19.

Certainly, the daily case count has slipped a bit (to an average of 254 cases a day, based on the last seven days).

“These measures are working when we follow them,” Premier Scott Moe said last week, suggesting that all we have to do is follow the existing rules to make sure things are working.

“There’s been a small number — mainly bars and restaurants — who are not following them.”

Therein lies the problem. Some businesses or their customers clearly are not following the rules, with three bars in Regina or Saskatoon being fined $14,000 each for violations.

The fines may appear to be an indication of the government getting tough, but they may also be a sign that we’ve gone about as far on COVID-19 restrictions as Moe is willing to go.

He announced during the final week of the Saskatchewan election campaign in October that there would not be another lockdown and has stuck to that commitment.

Saskatchewan’s lower daily case count may not be quite as rosy as the Premier suggest.

The problem with the case numbers is that they are based on identified symptomatic people getting testing when the real problem may be asymptomatic people unknowingly carrying the virus and spreading it to others.

An arguably better indicator is the positivity rate — the percentage of people tested who test positive. It has often been above 10 per cent in Saskatchewan for weeks. And the most crucial number is the death toll that’s already made January the deadliest month in Saskatchewan for COVID-19 related fatalities.

And also contrary to Moe’s suggestions, we haven’t been as tough as other places.

For the first time in your lifetime, you face restrictions travelling to a neighbouring province after Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister issued a 14-day quarantine order for outsiders coming in.

But Manitoba’s per capita daily new case counts — once far in excess of Saskatchewan’s — are now back down in the double digits.

And with a new more virulent strain of COVID-19 now in this country, the new worry for all jurisdictions is a far more rapid spread of cases capable of swamping health systems.

By contrast, Moe is now counting on a combination of fines for individuals and business breaking the rules, people’s willingness to abide by the existing rules and the arrival of vaccines.

It is true that the Saskatchewan Premier has overseen one of the most successful vaccine rollouts in the nation.

But as Moe frustratingly acknowledged last week, the province ran out of vaccines to distribute. And we are months away from seeing enough of a critical mass of people vaccinated people to make a difference.

Of course, there’s the legitimate hope numbers will just go down with the warmer weather.

But if they don’t many may wonder why Moe wasn’t get tougher.

Shelley Luedtke It was a question used as a writing prompt to create outrageous scenarios: would you rather wear a bathing suit in a snowstorm or a snowsuit to the beach?

Which one would you choose? Give it a moment, if you need to. I would choose the snowstorm every time.

Yes, every time. Why? Because I turn into a dripping mess in the heat.

A glance through our vacation pictures will bear me out. It’s rather unfortunate that our favourite holiday destinations have often been in hot or humid climates, so while my family seems to always look their best, most of the time I look like a drowned rat. The heat zaps me of energy, it causes me to lose my appetite, my hair falls flat, and my complexion makes me an easy target

While it might be easy to simply give away what we don’t want anymore, it can be tougher to meet needs that are actually there if we haven’t made the effort to find out what is truly needed.

We want to rise to what the situation necessitates. A plane load of stuff to a disaster zone can be a blessing or a burden, depending on what the situation on the ground requires. Sometimes the need is canned goods. Sometimes the need is cash. The same goes for responding to our neighbours when the unthinkable happens. Sometimes the need is clothing and housewares. Sometimes its coffee and a hug. We simply need to ask.

The idea of someone possessing little more than a swimsuit when so much more is needed is not merely the set-up to a writing prompt. It is the reality a significant percentage of our population finds itself in. But there are things we can do. It might require sacrifice on our part, but it could be life-changing for someone else. Imagine if we were all part of an effort to make sure that the ones who need the snowsuit, are the ones that receive it. That’s my outlook.

Ahh, good times.

The thing is, I love summer. As long as there’s some occasional shade, good quality sunscreen and a steady supply of cool water, I am good to go. But that’s the key — you have to have the right gear to confront the elements. Which, of course, a bathing suit in a snowstorm is not.

Yet what is simply meant to be a silly writing scenario for some, is far too great a reality for others when we think of all the people who are left to withstand harsh situations without sufficient provision. They lack proper clothing, adequate nutrition, or access to a decent water supply. They have insufficient health care. Little education.

Too many simply don’t have what they need for basic survival.

Rewriting the scenario would seem to start with some pretty basic math: those that have more than they need should strive to live with less so that others can have at least some.

But we also need to ensure that what we are ready to give is appropriate to the situation.

I have missed out on days at the beach because I have had to stay at the campsite or back in the room nursing a bad sunburn. I have been the one slowing the group down as we made our way through theme parks when the sprint in my step in the morning became lumbering by mid-afternoon. And it’s frustrating to try and get me to eat when highpriced meals meet zero appetite.

The event that my family says best epitomizes my inability to handle heat was a summer afternoon in Florida. The temperature on that particular day exceeded the already-high seasonal average and I felt like the humidity was choking out the last bit of oxygen from my lungs.

We were sitting in an amphitheater watching a stunt show. Our seats were at the front near the bottom of the bowl where there was absolutely no air movement.

I would have given anything for a slight breeze to glide over us but there was none. Then, for good measure, the show incorporated all kinds of massive explosions in the impressive display.

Winners announced for the Optimist Club Snowmobile Rally

By Lisa McCullough The Arcola Optimistic Club held their 28th annual snowmobile rally lottery this year and the winners were announced on Jan. 30.

The club usually holds a large ride with people from all over the southeast but due to COVID restrictions this was unable to happen this year.

“Due to restrictions it was not possible to do the rally, so we told people to go out on a ride on their own and send us notes and pictures. There was no way to get around handling a large volume of people. It was not possible to do this safely, we did not want to

put the southeast in any sort of danger,” said Blake Brownridge, president of the club.

On the day of the draw, six to eight members got together at the Royal Canadian Legion hall, placed all the tickets in the draw drum and drew for the prizes. There were 502 riders registered for the prizes and there was just over 11,000 dollars in prizes this year. The draw was live streamed on the group’s Facebook page.

The first-place winner was Jordan Beriault from Alida, he chose the sled out of the three options available for him to pick from. The other two were a quad and a street

bike. Second place winner of $1,000 was Gary Cross from Regina and the third-place winner which was also $1,000, was Piper Bourhis from Kennedy.

Though the group was disappointed they could not hold their ride this year, they had many people contact them with their understanding as to why the ride could not be held.

“We did not expect the response, it was amazing how many people called us with encouraging words and telling us that they understood why we could not hold this ride this year,” Brownridge explains.

A form of a lottery, how Chase the Ace works is the jackpot accumulates from week to week until it is won and then the game is over who someone pulls the ace of spades

from a deck of cards.

People who want to participate must purchase lottery tickets; the funds from those tickets is usually split three ways. The organizer keeps 50 per cent, the winner of the weekly lottery takes 20 per cent and the remaining 30 per cent goes back into the jackpot.

The winner of the lottery also draws a card from a deck where in

this case the cards are in envelopes to prevent too much handling due to COVID; if the ace of spades is drawn by that winner, they win the accumulated jackpot. If not, the deck is kept for the next week’s game and the jackpot rolls over to the next week.

This is a fundraiser for the Manor Fire Department.

“We have a very enthusiastic fire de-

partment who are very supportive of this community. They also have great leadership with their fire chief and his two deputies,” Lucille Dunn of Manor explains.

The department is doing this fundraiser to help them become better equipped with upgraded personal protective equipment and suits. They are also putting money aside for a

new fire truck down the line.

Due to COVID, Chase the Ace had a late start on Dec. 4, 2020, but it now runs every Friday from 5-7 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for anyone who wants to par-

ticipate. Only 24 people are allowed in the bar at one time because of the social distancing restrictions, so the department streams it live on Facebook so other people can watch the action.

Bed and breakfast doing well since opening in December

By Lisa McCullough Debbie Andrew and her husband Blair, at first, had no intentions of building such a large house for themselves but for resale value or to pass it down to their children, building a larger house with more bedrooms made sense in the long run, even if it was just the two of them living there at this time.

The couple took their plans and dreams to a log home builder in British Columbia and sooner than expected, their dream home was built and their new plans for its future were in the works.

“We were under the impression it would be a couple of years, but we gave our plans beginning of July 2018 and by the end of June 2019 we got a call asking if we

wanted our house.”

The process to build a log home takes longer than most normal houses. The company, North American Log Crafters, cuts and hand scribes each log then once all the logs are cut, the house is built in B.C. to make sure it all works, then it is taken down, loaded on trucks, and hauled to its forever location, in this case all the way to Saskatchewan to Debbie and Blair’s property.

“June 15th of 2019, the first truck showed up. Our responsibility was to hire a crane and we had the house up in four days. Blair did all the sanding, we stained and clear coated all the logs in the structure,” Debbie explains as they wanted to be a part of building their dream home.

With all the extra rooms in the large home, Debbie, and

Blair, both business-minded people, decided to open their home to the public and rent the rooms out as a bed and breakfast. The couple listed their home on the website Airbnb and within 12 hours of listing they had people wanting to book.

“Because our suite is fully contained, people can come and stay with us but still social distance because of COVID,” Debbie Andrew explains.

Since its opening, the bed and breakfast has had bookings almost every weekend.

Debbie and Blair have been blown away by the response they have gotten regarding this adventure of theirs. They even hosted a wedding at their property. The couple has plans to turn the basement into board rooms for business retreats as well.

This log home is used for an Airbnb by Debbie and Blair Andrew.

“We have started to see the beauty in the little things (since opening the BNB). It has taught us to slow down and enjoy the simple things because

they are profoundly beautiful” Debbie Andrews states.

Local youths to benefit from A&W fundraiser Young people in the Carlyle area will benefit through a national fundraiser by A&W and Mealshare.

A national social

enterprise looking to help end youth hunger, Mealshare has announced a new, ongoing national partnership with A&W Canada. For

every Mealshare item purchased at an A&W location, one simple healthy meal will be provided to a youth in need.

The beneficiary for Carlyle will be the Carlyle and District Food Bank.

The partnership has a goal of sharing 1,250,000 meals per year. All of A&W’s locations are participating, which means 1,000 locations stretching across the country.

Meals are provided through Mealshare’s network of 450 local charity partners across Canada. Eighty per cent of Mealshare’s financial support stays in local communities where the Mealshare item was purchased, and 20 per cent goes internationally to Save the Children.

On Mealshare Mondays, customers can order a Cheddar Bacon

Uncle Burger combo and one meal will be provided to a youth in need through Mealshare.

Any day of the week, customers can “Make it a Mealshare” by adding $1 to their order. When customers do this, one meal will be provided to a youth in need through Mealshare.

Customers can participate in-restaurant, through drive-thru, or by using a mobile app.

Theft of snowmobiles in Oxbow under investigation The Carnduff RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance with a recent theft and some suspicious activity.

In a message on the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network, issued Jan. 30, the RCMP says it received a report the previous day of a significant theft of a trailer and two snowmobiles from a residential yard located in the town of Oxbow.

The victim of this crime was not sure when the theft occurred, but that it certainly was between Jan. 23 and 29. The trailer was described as a homebuilt structure bearing Saskatchewan licence plate 448 LGS. The snowmobiles were described as a white Polaris RMK 600 bearing Saskatchewan licence plate 358 MD, and a yellow honeycomb Ski-Doo Renegade bearing Saskatchewan licence plate 359 MD.

It is also critical that prospective recreational vehicle buyers remain vigilant of deals that are seemingly “too good to be true.”

On another front, the detachment says it has also been dispatched reports of suspicious activity in the northwest quadrant of the RM of Mount Pleasant.

The unwanted activity occurred at oil batteries and unoccupied farm sites north of Glen Ewen. Fortunately, police investigation revealed minimal damage and no theft.

This activity is not being characterized as a remarkable uptick in crime, but it’s worth everyone’s attention to remind those responsible that people are on the lookout.

The Carnduff Detachment is encouraging residents of the rural municipalities to remain ever vigilant to help maintain the integrity of rural communities.

The Carlyle RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in locating an ATV that was stolen on Jan. 23.

A 2009 Polaris Sportsman 500 ran out of gas three kilometres south of Manor, and when the owner returned with fuel, the ATV was no longer there.

The Polaris Sportsman is camo in color, has a two-up seat, and a snow plow on the front.

“If you have any information on where this ATV might be, please contact the Carlyle RCMP at 306453-6707,” says the message distributed through the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network Monday afternoon.

The Carlyle RCMP is also seeking the public’s help with a theft from a rural property.

Sometime between Dec. 26, 2020, and Jan. 1, a red 2012 Morris Hay Hiker was stolen off a red tractor parked approximately two kilometres east of Highway 9 on Township Road 70.

Adrian Paton

In loving memory of our son

Who was taken from us February 10, 2007

Adrian Keith Paton of Arcola, SK. passed away peacefully on January 28, 2021, in his own home, surrounded by his family. Adrian was one month short of his 87th birthday.

Adrian was an inspiration to all who knew him.

He leaves a broad legacy of love, friendship, stories written and compiled, historical records, and treasured memories.

Throughout his life Adrian assumed many roles: Son, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Father (and sometimes Mother), Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Friend, Farmer, Historian, Naturalist, Archivist, Author, and more.

He is truly missed.

Adrian is survived by his brothers: Earl Paton of Saskatoon, SK and Jim Paton (Carol) of Arcola; sons: Russell Paton (Terri) of Millarville, AB, Brad Paton (Rhonda) of Arcola, Kevin Paton (Jayne) of Arcola and daughter Valerie Guillemin (Glen) of Saskatoon.

Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, their {spouses} and (great grandchildren): Adam {Bianca} (Leo); Aaron {Emma}; Marshall {Deanna}; Riley {Taylor}; Scott {Renee} (Victoria); Marcie {Craig} (Kirby), (Titus), (Ryan), (Bo), (Parker); Dennis {Michelle} (Brody); Tyler {Robyn} (Sloan) (Remy); Marissa {Chad} (Dane) (Brock); Ben {Lexi} (Isla); Erin {Sham}.

Adrian had the foresight to have a celebration of life in 2017. Another celebration of life will be organized when the weather and current health restrictions allow.

Adrian has created a monument on Hawk Hill west of his farm where anyone who wishes may pay their respects by adding a stone to the pile.

The family has requested that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy of Canada, online at https://www.natureconservancy.ca/en/ or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers or gifts.
