By Laura Kish Each year, the Town of Kipling recognizes volunteers who work to make the community a better place, for seniors, in sport and recreation, and in culture and heritage.

The recipients are nominated throughout the year by various individuals and organizations and adjudicated by a committee made up of members of the Kipling Parks & Rec Board, the Lions Club, a town staff

member and two community members.

Nominations are accepted all year long with a deadline of Dec. 31 each year. Forms are available on the Town of Kipling’s website as well as in the town office.

These awards are normally presented at the Kipling Young Centre’s Hearts For Youth banquet, but due to COVID-19, they were presented by Mayor Pat Jackson at the Kipling Community Centre with a small gathering

This year’s deserving recipients are: Elsie Pearson received the award in the Senior category.

Pearson has contributed to the community of Kipling in so many ways. She served on the executive of the Kipling Friendship Centre for many years as treasurer.

In this role, Pearson assisted the organization with keeping accurate financial records, taking bookings to rent the facility, and sourcing

of the game of curling for youth ages six to 12 years. Sproat also in recent years instructed adult learn to curl clinics to increase participation in the sport.

Bette Klein received the award in the Culture and Heritage category.

Klein has been involved in the sharing of heritage of the community of Kipling for over 30 years. Most notably, she has shared her knowledge with the youth of the community during that time through her in-

out additional means of funding for the organization.

Dana Sproat received the award in the Sport and Recreation category. Sproat has devoted 11 years of volunteer development and delivery of hands on instruction to our community’s youth through the youth curling program.

She not only received her community coach designation but also developed Kipling’s program of skill development and understanding

volvement with Kipling and District Parks and Recreation Summer Activities Program annually, by offering a heritage component to the program, thus teaching youths about life generations ago and assisting them with identifying the differences between those eras and their current daily lives. Town of Carlyle receives funding for spray park

By Deb Andrew COVID-19 has put a stop to so many community events and use of community facilities, but thanks to the town and council, there is funding in place and plans in motion for a wonderful, new spray park for the town.

With any new development, there is much deliberation over pros and cons of location, maintenance/upkeep, staffing and overall benefits to the community and residents.

What is in the future?

These are questions being asked by individuals, nonprofit groups, community groups, government organizations and businesses all around the country. In light of the uncertain times we live in, the Town of Carlyle says it is sure of a few things.

1-Stop Playgrounds Inc. has the experience and track record needed to make the

build and maintenance a success for Carlyle. Giving the town council references to Wakaw, Cumberland House, almost all of the Yorkton water parks, many in Saskatoon and some in Prince Albert helped in answering all of their questions like: • What extra costs will the town incur?

• How much power is used to operate the system?

• What is the rate the water flows through the features?

• What does the annual maintenance consist of?

• What is the typical life span of the features?

• Can you supply the names of other towns who did not install a change room/ bathroom facility right off the start? The town would like to add that later as available funds are raised.

Answers to all of these questions and more have brought clarity and confidence

to the project.

Their detailed research includes a list of pros and cons for both locations and a complete budget scenario for both.

The town has done their due diligence to consider water run-off, road repair costs and contacting the CN Railway for extending parking.

“We are open to all communication from residents and just want the facts out there for all people to consider,” town manager Natalie Miller explained. “Our discussions with the pool board and other concerned citizens have us weighing all options. It is an amazing project that will add a free, outdoor recreation facility for many ages and abilities to enjoy. The infrastructure will be in place for bathrooms and changerooms as the site matures and develops and funding becomes available.”

Southeast Sask. Search and Rescue is to have a professional canine unit

By Ana Bykhovskaia The Southeast Saskatchewan Search and Rescue (SESK SAR) chapter keeps getting stronger.

Basic training was postponed in early 2020 due to the pandemic, but the organization still found a way for development and took a step in a new direction, announcing the establishment of a civilian search canine unit. The training will start in May. Medicine Hat's Dan Vas, who is a part of the Canadian Search Dog Association (CSDA), has been a dog handler for 20 years, and he also belongs to a Southeast Alberta SAR chapter. He will be working with canine handler teams in the Estevan area on and off for about two years. After the civilian search canine training course, the dogs will be able to try going through RCMP examination and certification.

"The RCMP has released the requirements to certify a civilian search and rescue dog, so what happens is you get your dog trained to the level that … can be tested.

There are several levels of testing that you have to go through to get your dog certified," said SESK SAR president Katia Bigney.

Vas pointed out that to start the training dog needs to have basic obedience skills and it's always better to start training a dog as young as possible, potentially as early as eight weeks of age. However, it will take more than just skills and training.

"First of all, a dog has to be able to work in both hot and cold climates …

Then, you want a dog that can navigate through all types of terrain, not every area is going to be flat Prairie land … That takes certain breeds out of the picture … Typically we are looking for retrievers, shepherds, border collies, any dog that can handle the terrain and weather," Vas explained.

Not only does a dog need to have physical characteristics, but it also has to be a fit for the job.

"You need a dog that wants to work … You want a dog that's known for its scenting abilities and good nose, and at

Vas went on to explain that good search dogs should have a particular level of natural curiosity in them. They also can't be blindly obedient, as that would prevent them from understanding search skills.

But learning each other's language is a team effort, in which a dog has to have a natural interest in doing search work and learn how to explain to the handler what's going on, while the handler has to understand what exactly the dog is up to.

"What you want is intelligent disobedience.

What that is, is the dog is working, and when you call the dog back, you want it to stop and look at you and say, 'I'm working here.' And you have to be able to read the dog's body language. This is a big part of the training.

The dog has to be able to read the human, and the human has to be able to read the dog," Vas explained.

"Not all dogs are meant to be search dogs, and it's not a slight against the dog. It's like not everyone is going to become a doctor, or a professional athlete, or have a beautiful voice. Some dogs just don't have it, and we have to respect it."

The training will also require handlers to have a certain level of fitness to be able to keep up with their dogs, plus they will

need proper footwear and other gear and equipment.

"Depending on the weather, terrain, temperature, etc., the dog and humans may be limited to how long they can work. Conditioning is important for both human and dog," Vas said.

The training that the SAR dogs and their handlers will be going through will be similar to law enforcement canine training, except for the aggression part, which is excluded from the civilian course. Potential SAR dogs will learn how to track, locate articles in a ditch, laneways or alleys, and detect the scent of articles as well as humans in open areas. Once the dogs are a bit more mature and established, they will also be trained to locate evidence, except for narcotics.

The dog nose is so much more powerful, which makes a properly trained dog a great companion and tool in search and rescue operations.

Once the dogs are ready they will attempt at getting certified through RCMP as civilian SAR canine units. Vas pointed out that it would take about two years to get a dog trained, but it depends on how dedicated the handler is and how much time they have.

"What we minimally expect them to do is at least two to three nights of training for about hourhour and a half, at least, a night. And of course Saturdays and Sundays you are expected to do train-

ing on your own time, lots of homework and you'd better practise," Vas said, adding that three of his dogs were trained by 15 months of age, but he was working with them every night to achieve those results.

The initial training will take place in the Estevan area. The obstacle course will be built by May, when Vas is planning to come down to start the course if the health measures allow.

The hope is to have training sessions organized every two months, and handlers will be practising with their dogs in between meetings.

The training is open to all Saskatchewan search and rescue members. If someone is interested in going through the training but is not a member yet, they can join their local SAR chapter.

To have a dog certified, a handler has to be SAR member for at least two years, which will be about the time needed to get the animal ready for testing.

To able to go on a search, members will also have to take a 40-hour basic searcher training course, which will be organized once the COVID-19 related restrictions are eased or lifted.

Up to six caninehandler teams can partake in a training session at a time, but if there is more interest in the province, there will be more training groups organized in the future and the location will be established accordingly.

Texas reminds us of the value of SaskPower

By Murray Mandryk There are a number of reasons why we take good ol’ SaskPower for granted … and maybe sometimes even dislike it.

For starters, a government-owned monopoly utility is bound to irritate us because it seemingly can charge what it wants for something we absolutely can’t live without.

This has always been a source of resentment in Saskatchewan — one that’s likely grown as we’ve become more free enterprise in nature.

And while publicly-owned utilities like SaskPower actually pre-date the first Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (which would later become the NDP) government, Crown corporations have always been long-associated with the NDP’s social democratic philosophy. That was cemented in the 1980s when the NDP fought tooth and nail to stop their privatizations.

But ultimately why we still own Crown utilities like SaskPower comes down to our recognition that we do need a stable, reliable and affordable power supply for all.

A snowstorm 1,400 miles to the south of us in Texas now serves as a reminder of that.

The -20 C temperatures Texans faced a couple of weeks ago wreaked havoc on poorly insulated homes, businesses and people more accustomed to enduring tornadoes, hurricanes and summer heat.

About 4.7 million Texas homes and businesses were left without electricity, heat and running water due to burst pipes and frozen natural gas intakes.

Power lines downed by ice and freezing rain added to the chaos.

So did wind turbines that account for 15.7 per cent of Texas power that were shuddered by the cold.

We better insulate everything, including our wind turbines — although they only account for 241 megawatts or five per cent of SaskPower’s total 4,893-megawatt generating capacity.

Contrary to the notion held by some that wind turbines don’t work in cold Saskatchewan winters, they continue to spin here in temperatures as low as -30 C (windchill being a non-factor, because wind is the turbine’s friend). In fact, wind turbines here pump out more energy in the colder months.

But besides being prepared for cold, Saskatchewan is more accepting of the reality that distributing electricity to a vast jurisdiction (Saskatchewan is within 4,000 square kilometres of being as big as Texas) requires rules to be followed and a willingness of both businesses and people to co-operate.

What really bogged down Texas even after the power went back on is utility deregulation in that state that’s created a bit of a free-for-all that now sees Texas consumers buy their power from the cheapest private source and sees little in the way of a backup plant for catastrophic events like this snowstorm.

Unlike SaskPower that stops energy exports in times of shortages and also has agreements and means to quickly purchase power from neighbours in a crisis, there is little central planning in deregulated Texas.

So even after power was restored, some Texans were hit with bills of $5,000 for five days because their contracts with private companies allowed them to jack up prices to make up for shortfalls.

Maybe what we saw in Texas is reason to question whether its smart to be handing back rebate cheques back to consumers as the Saskatchewan Party promised last election rather than pumping that money back into SaskPower’s aging infrastructure.

As Texas proved, electricity costs you dearly when you don’t have it.

Reaching for the stars

Shelley Luedtke I was getting some work done, but cheating a bit using a split screen so I could watch the landing of the Perseverance rover on Mars.

At first the coverage consisted of interviews and analysis, but as it got closer to the scheduled time of landing, you could hear the excitement and nerves in the voices of those providing updates. The words, “Perseverance is alive on the surface of Mars,” were uttered and mission control erupted.

I remember when the call went out several years ago seeking people interested in the Mars One project, a private enterprise looking for individuals willing to leave everything behind to be among the first humans to step foot on that planet. Although it was denounced as a

a long list where this is the reality.

We have an opioid crisis that is worsening every day. Western Canada continues to be the most impacted area of the country – a reality since 2016. Five regions observed record-breaking numbers of deaths in a three-month period in 2020.

Perhaps this is how it has always been, but couldn’t we…and shouldn’t we…strive for better?

We know what can be achieved when there is a collective will to make something happen. NASA says it took hundreds of people 10 years to make ready what was needed for Perseverance. If we were to harness these kinds of resources on “all the other problems we have” we could make life on this planet so much better for so many. And we don’t need to be rocket scientists. That’s my outlook.

NASA has been there before. Still is.

Other nations, too. But this fifth NASA rover to land on Mars is described as the biggest and best, with one of the most complex robotic systems ever made. Just moments after the rover began sending pictures back, one of the team members was breathless in his excitement saying, “This is really amazing. This is a sign.

When we put our heads together and our brains together, we can succeed. This is what NASA does. This is what we can do as a country on all other problems we have. We need to work together to do these kinds of things and make success happen.”

Imagine if what he said was really possible, and that “this is what we can do…on all the other problems we have.” All the other problems we have. Where could we start?

scam and scorned by many, nonetheless applicants numbering more than 200,000 indicated their interest.

They included doctors, pilots, veterinarians, and business people from places all around the world, ranging in age from 18 to 71, eager to pursue the oneway journey to Mars.

The project had long been rebuked by scientists and engineers, questioning if the whole thing had been a fraud from the start, or simply the dreams of people naïve to the immense challenge it would be. One of the finalists admitted that to keep making it to the next step of the process, he was required to buy merchandise or donate to the company.

The veracity of the whole project was put to the test when two researchers from MIT pointed out, flaw for flaw, the problems with Mars One in a debate with its founder. It came to an end in January 2019 when the company was declared bankrupt and forced to dissolve.

CF Sunrise bringing workshop to the Trudeau’s new legislation misses the mark southeast

The editor: “Every single Canadian wants to see less gun violence and safer communities.”

While I would agree with the sentiment of that statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, I disagree with the way he intends to get there.

The overwhelming majority of guns used in Canadian crimes are smuggled in from the U.S. If the Liberals are serious about reducing gun crime, why team up with the New Democratic Party to defeat a private member’s bill that would have increased penalties for people who smuggle illegal guns into Canada? Along with making it more difficult for suspects accused of gunrunning to get bail, the same bill also would have increased minimum sentences for gun smuggling and for being in possession of a

smuggled gun.

Instead, the federal government is arbitrarily penalizing law-abiding firearms owners with legislation that, among other things, would allow municipalities to ban handguns through bylaws restricting their possession, storage, and transportation. The measures would be backed up with serious penalties including jail time for those who violate a misguided patchwork of municipal rules.

So, in addition to punishing law-abiding firearms owners, new federal legislation aims to encourage criminals not to possess, store or transport handguns they already couldn’t legally possess. Does that seem effective to you?

Saskatchewan has passed legislation to restrict municipalities from passing such bylaws on

handgun ownership; we don’t need a patchwork system across our province. We have also appointed a new chief firearms officer from Saskatchewan instead of allowing the federal government to appoint one.

The federal government should be targeting the real problem: crimes involving stolen, smuggled, and illegal guns. Instead, they are targeting Toronto voters, with law-abiding firearms owners the victims of bad legislation.

So ask yourself this, if the purpose is truly to reduce gun violence and build safer communities, why did Trudeau and the NDP vote against longer sentences for criminals last month?

The editor: As a concerned citizen and taxpayer of the town of Carlyle, I want to bring the proposed new splash park to your attention.

The proposed location is in Centennial Park, which is on the corner of Main Street and Mountain Drive. Two very busy streets. There would be limited parking at this location, which

would mean parking on the street, which would be very dangerous.

There are no bathroom facilities, and sewer would have to be dug in at a cost.

The second location, Lions Park, is in the area of the Crescent Point Leisure Centre. It has ample parking, bathroom facilities close by, and sewer would

still have to be dug in at a cost.

March 3 is the next council meeting, at which time the location decision will be made. To voice your opinion please talk to Mayor Jen Sedor or a council member or Natalie at the town office

help from “those in the know” about economic development.

“If you are a municipal leader, operate a small business, or just care about your community and want to see it thrive, you won’t want to miss out on this fantastic learning opportunity,” CF Sunrise said in a news release.

The knowledge and tools you gain can be used to make positive changes and further support your own local business community.

The online sessions will take place on March 16, 23 and 30 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Space is limited for this three-part workshop series and pre-registration is required.

The session fee of $30 will provides you with access to the full workshop, along with all materials and a customized business retention and expansion template.

Kipling Fire Department holding online 50/50

By Laura Kish Everything has to be done just a little bit different these days due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To cut down on human contact, the Kipling Fire Department is holding their first-ever online 50-50 fundraiser to raise funds in order to purchase a much-needed thermal imaging camera, which seems to be one of the pieces of equipment that the department needs most at the moment.

“Depending on the brand, this item can cost anywhere from $12,000 to $15,000,” explains Ken Nordal, Fire Chief of the Kipling Fire Department. “The funds from the 50/50 will give the department a good starting point to make that happen.”

A thermal imaging camera is not only designed to detect hot spots at a fire but

it can also be used at an accident, for instance. If a person is ejected out of a vehicle you can scan the area and see if there are any changes in temperature to locate a person.

“Whether it’s finding a person under snow, it lets you see the warmth in the ground,” explained Nordal.

“We have had some donations made to the fire department, so along with the funds raised from the 50/50, they will go towards the purchase of this camera trying to get closer to the magic number,” says Nordal.

So what are some of the costs for a Fire Department you may ask?

Turnout gear is said to have a shelf life of 10-15 years, depending on how many calls a fire department handles, this may vary from department to department.

The Kipling Fire Department is also purchasing new

turnout gear for only a few fighters at a time due to the cost for one firefighter being between $2,500 and $3,000.

Full turnout gear includes pants, jacket, boots, helmet, two pair of gloves and fire retardant balaclava.

The air packs and the self-contained breathing apparatus, come at a cost of $8,000 if purchased new.

Vehicle extraction tools can cost up to $25,000. The foam that they use for fire retardant on fires costs $200 per 20 litres. At any given fire they’re probably going to pump off seven to 10 litres.

Day to day operations of the building, including insurance, also adds into the expenses.

The online 50/50 raffle started Feb. 15, with the current pot sitting at $730, as of Feb. 23.

Depending on how this 50/50 fundraiser goes, Nordal says they’ll decide after that what kind of fundraiser they’ll try next.

“In the past we’ve done other fundraisers includ-

ing one where a firearm was donated to the department and we sold tickets on that,” explains Nordal. “We usually end up with around the $3,000 mark following that fundraiser.”

Carlyle and Lampman among Saskatchewan communities entered for In Motion’s Get Out and Play Challenge Carlyle and Lampman are among 38 communities from across the province entered in the 10th annual Saskatchewan Blue Cross/Saskatchewan In Motion Get Out and Play Challenge.

If successful, Carlyle would use the money for a new spray park. Lampman would direct the funds to the Pool Play Park.

Arcola was entered, but they decided to back out and support Carlyle’s bid.

People can allocate up to 120 minutes of physical activity per day from March 1-10. The exercise can be done at home, at school or in the community, both indoors and outdoors.

An individual or family can login multiple times each day as well.

Missed physical activity minutes from previous days cannot be added. Only the current day’s minutes can be submitted.

Schools cannot allocate the minutes of physical activity done by

Once minutes have been allocated to a specific community or community association, the minutes cannot be withdrawn or transferred.

Crackin’ the codes for the Scavenger Hunt

By Laura Kish Kipling Leisure Services held its first-ever Winter Scavenger Hunt on Feb. 16 and 17.

Fifteen clues were listed on Feb. 16 on the Town of Kipling’s website and participants had to go out and try to solve the clues and take pictures of each, and then submit them to Kipling Leisure Services. Out of all of the entries received there were three winners: First place winners Amanda, Danika and Spencer Cancade, who won a one-week family pool pass to the Kipling Swimming Pool.

Taking second place was Carol Lyons who won a large pizza.

Coming in third were Myla and Kloe Hill and Kaylee Joorisity, who won a $20 Tim Hortons Gift Card.

“The Winter Scavenger Hunt was an idea that we came up with in

response to the COVID lockdown and the restrictions that everyone has been experiencing,” explains Susan Hengen, Kipling Leisure Services manager.

“The kids had that week off school and families are all around and there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of extra things going on, so this idea wouldn’t cost anyone anything to take part,” explained Hengen.

“It would get people out around the community and circulating a bit,” says Hengen, who added, “I think it lifted spirts. It was kind of motivating for people because the one resounding comment was that it was fun. It was a lot of fun.

“They enjoyed going out and having to think about the clues,” Hengen also said.

that we would consider all convincing entries.

We had a variety of answers for some questions that were very convincing. It was kind of neat to see people’s different perceptions of what an item was.”

As for doing something like this again, Hengen stated: “I think we’ll look at the Easter Break doing some sort of an event.

“We were pleased with the amount of entries we received,” said Hengen, “And I think we’ll get a lot more entries the next time around….especially if the weather is better.”

It was also nice to see the different ages of people that were involved. Some did the activity as a family, some kids did it in groups together and some retired people were on their own.

The Cancade family was excited about taking part in the hunt.

They were asked “What was the most fun and the best thing about it?”

“Trying to solve the hints,” said Danika.

“Everything about it,” said little brother Spencer, who added, “cracking the codes!”

“We were excited to take part because we were already thinking about what the answers could be before we even started,” said Spencer.

Their mother said that the kids got some of the answers without her help.

They said they would make use of the one-week pass.

One of the questions was ‘who is the happiest resident’ and that answer was interpreted in many different ways including a dog named Happy. The Cancade family sent in their photo of ‘Bob B. the Snowman’ because he was smiling while shoveling snow and he is always helping out around Kipling.

“We were surprised that we won,” said an excited Danika when her mom told her the good news.

“If there was another scavenger hunt held, we would take part again,” says the whole family.

Accident on Highway 9 leaves one person dead On Feb. 22, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Carlyle RCMP responded to the report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on Highway 9 on the White Bear First Nation.

Initial investigation revealed a truck was travelling south on Highway 9 when it allegedly struck the pedestrian who was walking on the southbound driving lane. The 26-year-old driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, stopped and attempted life-saving efforts until emergency responders arrived on scene.

The 52-year-old male pedestrian was declared deceased on scene by EMS. An RCMP collision reconstructionist along with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service also attended to examine the scene.

Alcohol or drugs are not being investigated as factors in the collision at this time.

Both lanes of Highway 9 between the Bear Claw Casino Hotel and the entrance to Kenosee Lake reopened earlier Monday morning.

The collision is still under investigation.

The private family Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, SK with Intern Pastor Sharon Kane officiating. Interment took place at the Woodley Cromar Cemetery following the service.

Pain and suffering and good news

In Victor Frankel’s stories about his days in Auschwitz, he talks about how people facing such horror and suffering found hope in the midst of the pain. A young woman, facing death in the very near future was always smiling and cheerful.

So he asked her: "How, how do you hold your countenance to be so wonderful in the midst of such suffering and pain?" She said, "In my loneliness, the only thing I have is that tree I can spy through this tiny window and I talk to it."

He was rather confused and asked, "Does

it talk back?" She said, "Yes." "What does it say to you?" She said, "The tree says to me 'I am here. I am here. And I am alive. I am eternally alive.'"

As Christians believing in the resurrection, we can look at the tree of the cross and we can say, "I shall not be conquered. I believe in eternal life." We can look suffering and death in the eye and say, “I am alive. I am eternally alive.”

Scripture offers us powerful support when it comes to pain and suffering.

“From Paul… Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of

compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:1-7).

Our God is a God who comforts us in our troubles. Paul goes on: “For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. We don’t always get it right, but as Christians we come back to the Lord on Sunday morning and try again to follow Jesus. As Father Brendan McGuire put it: “We must do what Christ did. We take in the hatred and give

out love. We take in the anger and give out graciousness. We take in the envy and we give out compassion. We take in the bitterness and we give out blessing. We take in the pettiness and we give out warmth. And fundamentally in the end, we take in pain, suffering and sin and give out forgiveness. At the end of it all, we take in death and we embrace eternal life.”

We have had requests for donations to various local groups.

As you may know, the money collected during the poppy campaign stays in our community to be used for the benefit of our veterans.

The main purpose of the fund is to assist veterans in need. It is a trust fund and can only be used with the permission of Provincial Command. This year, once permission is granted, donations will be made to the Moose Mountain Lodge, Arcola Medical Clinic, STARS Air Ambulance, Manor Fire Department and the local Air Cadet squadron.

It is thanks to the generosity of the community that we are able to do this.

Carnduff Curling Club wins provincial contest The Carnduff Curling Club has received a boost after winning a provincial contest.

Carnduff finished first in the Affinity Credit Union Season of Curling competition.

The Stoughton Curling Club was second and the Swift Current Curling Club came in third.

To enter, clubs submitted a video with players explaining what curling means to them.

In the case of Carnduff, they not only answered the question and had footage of the four-sheet rink, but they had music playing in the background, as members explained that curling offers a sense of

community, a chance to play a sport for everyone, exercise, teamwork, competition and socializing.

Jodie Wall, the recreation director and facilities manager with the Carnduff Rec. Board, said they decided to enter the contest for fun, to promote the sport and get excitement going since the rink was open just briefly in 2020-21.

“We have very few things that we can get the community excited about pertaining to curling, so it was nice to have something directed for it,” said Wall.

The video turned out great, with members who stepped up and

helped out, she said.

CurlSask selected the video and Affinity Credit Union sponsored the competition.

The $2,000 prize couldn’t have come at a better time for the rink. They weren’t able to open for very long this season. And since they didn’t have a junior program this year, they couldn’t have the rink open for youth curlers to practise like other facilities did.

Prior to the season being shut down at the end of November, they were doing pretty well.

“We’re always looking for new members,” said Wall. “We would love to be able to curl

more than what we do.

We have one solid league night and we’ve got an afternoon curling program for anyone that’s available to come in the afternoon. It’s mainly been seniors, but it’s not limited to seniors.”

Typically during the season, they would be open three days a week, and they would also be open for rentals and there would be bonspiels. They have had junior programs in the past, but this year, due to COVID and a lack of coaching, they didn’t have the program.

A return of their junior program will be a goal for next season, she said.

Coldest Night fundraiser a hit for Choose Life The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser for Choose Life Ministry on Saturday in Estevan proved to be a hit.

A total of nine teams and 55 participants registered. The Estevan Leisure Centre served as the start-finish line for the event, with participants given the option of walking two or five kilometres. Most of the walk occurred in south Estevan.

Rather than having everybody start at once, walkers were sent off every few minutes in groups of 10, in order to allow for social distancing.

Choose Life founder Shelley Boyes pointed out that two teams from Manitoba did the walk in that province, and one participant walked in B.C.

The Coldest Night of the Year wound up raising more than $17,000 for Choose Life, and donations can be made until March 31.

“It was an amazing event,” said Boyes. “Participation was great and the weather was great, and everybody seemed to enjoy the event.”

Some of the participants walked as individuals or as couples.

Walkers received a Coldest Night of the Year mask. Those who raised at least $150 received a toque and those who cleared $1,000 received a button.

Had the event happened a week earlier, it might have occurred on the coldest night of the year, thanks to the extreme cold that gripped southeast Saskatchewan

for much of the first half of the month.

But the temperatures have warmed up considerably in the southeast in recent days, and Boyes is thankful for that.

The Coldest Night of the Year is a nationwide effort to create awareness of the challenges facing the homeless, the hungry and the hurting during the winter months.

“When we’re out on the streets in February, walking, (it helps us) just to see what these people go through in trying to survive when it’s the coldest night of the year,” said Boyes.

She expects that Choose Life will offer a Coldest Night of the Year walk in Estevan again next year.

Carnduff RCMP investigating truck theft in Gainsborough The Carnduff RCMP is investigating the recent theft of a truck.

The RCMP received a report Tuesday that a white, 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe with distinct black pinstriping was stolen from a residence in Gainsborough. The

truck had Saskatchewan license plate 909 IFM. The vehicle was taken overnight, having been seen the night before.

To this point, there have been no other reports of suspicious activity near or around

Gainsborough.

The space in between

Linda Wegner Words of Worth Sitting on a coffee table in our living room are two thriving plants, one, a poinsettia, and the other, an assortment of spring flowers.

So, big deal I say (and perhaps, you would too).

What struck me, however, was the space between that traditionally Christmas winter beauty and the other, a promise that spring weather is coming.

What we don’t know for sure is the timeline

of the space in between.

How long will the red beauty live before the spring florals take centre stage?

That thought got me measuring other things, the distance between my first lap around the walking track and the finishing lap. Sometimes that distance doesn’t seem significant; other times, my arthritic knees beg to cut it short (thankfully I rarely give into those pleas).

When I really hurt, I measure the distance from here to the next solid line across the lanes, or, the distance between where I am from the start of the last lap. Mostly the space doesn’t matter but there are days.

Far more heart-rending is the space between the melody and words of a familiar hymn, Amaz-

ing Grace. The refrain is thought to be a tune crooned by negro slaves in the belly of infamous ships. John Newton, captain of one of those ships, moved from his notorious trade to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Now free from his sinister attitude toward fellow human beings, he repented and abandoned a secure profession. Renouncing his behaviour and proclaiming his testimony, he wrote: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me….”

I don’t know how long between my birth and death but through it all, I’ve learned to trust in Jesus.

Drilling season peaking with 31 rigs working

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter The stretch from mid-February to the first week of March is traditionally the peak of the year for oilwell drilling activity. And on Feb. 22, there were 31 drilling rigs working in Saskatchewan, down markedly from the previous two years.

According to Rig Locator (riglocator.ca), in 2020 there were 65 rigs working on the same date, and 52 rigs working on that date in 2019.

During the boom years, from 2007-2014, there would be closer to 100 rigs working.

While the current number couldn’t be considered great by any means, it is significantly higher than the zero rigs that were drilling in the first part of the summer of 2020, when oil markets were initially recovering from the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic.

National numbers

show Cenovus Energy Inc. in first place, with 13 rigs working across the country, including one in northwest Saskatchewan, still listed as “Husky,” even though the companies have recently merged.

Crescent Point Energy Corp was tied for fourth with six rigs working, all in Saskatchewan.

Whitecap Resources was tied for sixth place, with five rigs working, of which three were in Saskatchewan.

Southeast Saskatchewan saw quite a bit of activity around Lampman and Benson. Aldon Oils Ltd. was drilling northwest of Lampman in the Bryant area, in the vicinity of a well they drilled a few years ago that was, for a time, the best producer in the province.

Torc Oil & Gas Ltd. had rigs working east and north of Lampman. Fire Sky Energy Inc. had one rig southwest of Benson, and Midale Petroleums also had a rig southwest

of Benson. Astra Oil Corp. had one rig north of Benson.

To the north, Crescent Point Energy had three rigs going in its Viewfield play. One was southeast of Griffin, a second was north of Stoughton and a third was north of the Pheasant Rump Nakota Nation. Ridgeback Resources Inc. had a rig going near Corning.

Closer to Weyburn, Hummingbird Energy had a rig working adjacent to the Souris River, northeast of the Weyburn unit main battery.

Torc had another rig working near the Souris River, but just south of Alameda. The third rig working in the Souris Valley was contracted for Tundra Oil and Gas, east of Roche Percee.

Crescent Point had a rig working within spitting distance of the U.S. border, just west of the Port of Torquay. Deep Earth Energy Production Corp. had a rig working north of its main site,

which is southeast of Torquay.

Half the rigs working in southwest Saskatchewan weren’t drilling for oil or methane, but rather that other natural gas – helium. At Battle Creek, north of Consul, North American Helium was drilling another well in its core area. Royal Helium Exploration Limited was drilling east of Climax.

Crescent Point had a rig working halfway between Shaunavon and Eastend. Whitecap was drilling north of Gull Lake.

The next area of activity is around Kindersley, with one rig so close, you might be able to hit it with a snowball from one of the hotels on the east side of town if you had a good south wind. That rig is working for Baytex Energy Ltd. In the Dodsland area, Crescent Point, Whitecap and Teine Energy Ltd. each had a rig going. Teine had another rig going a little further

Baytex had one more rig working east of Coleville, and Whitecap had one more south of Kerrobert.

Further northwest, Karve Energy Inc. was drilling southwest of Cut Knife.

There were four drilling rigs working north of Highway 16.

Serafina Energy Ltd. has extended its area to east of Prince, drilling on the east side of Highway 4, north of North Battleford. While it is still listed

as Husky, Cenovus had a rig working east of Maidstone at Rush Lake, near the North Saskatchewan River.

Gear Energy Ltd. had a rig south of Paradise Hill at Celtic.

The last rig was working just a few hundred metres off the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, southwest of Turtleford. You don’t often see numbered companies listed in these reports, but102031850 Saskatchewan Ltd. had employed that rig.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Shirley Bendtsen on the passing of her sister-in-law Ellen (Peacock) Desmarais on Feb. 9 at Glenboro Personal Care Home in Manitoba. She is survived by her daughter Darlene (Rick) Wood and family, brother-in-law Art Shier and sister-in-law Shirley Bendtsen, as well as numerous extended relatives and friends.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband Fred, son Stan,

sisters Audrey (Hugh) Armstrong, Isabelle Shier and Phyllis (Bill) Isleifson and brother Edgar Bendtsen. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Congratulations to Ian McKinna and Breanne Loose on the birth of their son Dawson Ross who arrived safe and sound on Feb. 14. First grandson for Scott and Leona McKinna, Congratulations to them as well, spoil that little fella grandma and grandpa.

On Feb. 17, Gray and Edel Cowan travelled to Regina, where Edel had a medical ap-

pointment. They also visited with son Jeff and Raylene for a while before heading back home. Sincere sympathy is extended to Mitch and Chris Beriault, Mark and Cindy Beriault and their families on the death of their mother/grandmother Mary Beriault, late Weyburn (formally of Redvers and Alida), who passed away on Feb. 17 at the age of 96 years. She will be remembered by her family as well as her daughters Paulette (Bill) Ozmun and family, Angelle Beriault. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Peirre/

Gabrielle Leveille, husband Joe Beriault, infant son Richard, brothers, Paul, Peter and Victor Leveille and granddaughter Jasmine Ozmun. A private graveside service was held February 22 at St Raphel Parish Cemetery.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley spent a day in Regina on Feb. 19, and the following day, Tim and Ainsley spent the day skiing at Mission Ridge Park before they returned home.
