Showing some love and appreciation with pen pal letters

By Lisa McCullough Stephanie Barnes from the Expressway Family Centre has once again come up with an extraordinary idea to help the residents of the Bow Valley Villa feel less isolated in this world where isolation has seemed to become the norm: pen pals.

That is right, Barnes has decided to ask kids of all ages

to reach out in letters, pictures, stories, etc. to the residents in a pen pal program.

The idea is to have the children write whatever they desire and send it to Barnes by the 15th of each month so they can be quarantined before being delivered to the residents, who will then send a letter back to the child that they receive the original letter from.

“It is a great opportunity for interaction, writing skills and something to look forward to each month because who doesn’t like to get fun mail?” Barnes exclaims.

The actual idea came through inspiration from her four-year-old son. He had asked if he could write a letter to his grandma and because of that, Barnes decided it would be a great idea for the com-

munity children and the residents as well.

“I am hoping it can be done monthly, stop over the summer and pick back up in the school year” Barnes explains.

So far for March 15 there are 17 children signed up and two school classes which guarantees every resident a letter. One of the classes is a pre-kindergarten class that

will be doing a group letter and the other class is a Grade 1 class that just celebrated 100 days of school, so they are going to ask each resident what it is like to be 100 years old.

For kids who want to become involved in this wonderful idea, all they need to do is to get in touch with Barnes via the Expressway Family Centre Facebook page and she will help set up all the details.

Help Bobby Byrnell during his cancer fight

By Laura Kish At 36 years old, Kipling’s Bobby Byrnell received the devastating news – he has cancer.

The thyroid was affecting his metabolism, he was always really tired, but one chalks this up to working long hours and he couldn’t quite put his finger on what was wrong.

He was losing weight, gaining weight and so on. This went on for quite some time.

After many doctor’s appointments, Byrnell was told he had thyroid cancer in late October 2020 and had his first surgery in February.

He has also recently had the diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma in his lymph nodes and possibly in his lungs.

Being independent business owners, Byrnell and his wife will need as much help as they can get during this tough time.

“I thought they got it all but was told this latest diagnosis is a very aggressive type of cancer,” Byrnell explains.

Byrnell was scheduled to go for more tests this week, including a CT scan and a PET scan.

“It’s been very frustrating for me,” explains Byrnell as he talks about the waiting time on when these tests will be done.

“By all means I’m not giving up!” says a positive thinking Byr-

nell, and adds: “I know I’m going to be able to beat this! I just want to know how severe things are…how has it spread?”

“The wonderful thing about 2020 (and 2021) is that there are some groundbreaking medical advances out there,” comments Byrnell.

He also made the tough decision to explain all the health issues to his two young daughters.

“It was really hard.

That’s something they’re going to have to work through. It’s going to be a struggle for them,” says Byrnell.

In a Facebook post, it was noted Byrnell has touched the hearts of many through his experiences with Fire and Rescue, maintaining the ice for our skaters and hockey teams, fixing everything and anything around town and always doing it with a smile.

“Bobby, his wife Bridgette and beautiful daughters Olivia and Shayla have been a big part of the Kipling and area communities for several years. Bobby has been a push in our community since he stepped foot here, helping to support those around him in their times of need.

“Bobby has always been a selfless man,” says good friend Perry Hubbard. “He wears his heart on his sleeve … quick to anger … quick to tears.”

“That’s why we felt it was a good idea to start a GoFundMe page for Bobby and his family,” explains Hubbard.

“A total of $12,000 was raised in only 24 hours.”

With huge support from Gee Bee Construction and Alan Batters, the Paperclip Cottage will be hosting a community fundraiser on March 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to support Bobby and Bridgette and their girls. This will be takeout and delivery only

due to COVID. The cottage will be serving homemade chili and a bun and dessert, or chicken and dumpling stew with a bun and dessert. The price for the meal will be $15 and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go directly to helping a man who has done so much for the community.

Come out and help make things just a little easier for Bobby Byrnell and his fight with cancer.

A good friend is currently working on a page for an online auction and is asking for donations by

way of items, services, handmade creations and anything that could help raise funds for this beautiful family by March 10. Please send a private message to Darcie Khounnoraj with a picture of your item and a description.

This page should be up and running as soon as possible and items will be up for bid, tentatively starting March 12.

Bobby and his family have tremendous support from the community.

“It’s been super overwhelming for me and my family,” comments Byrnell. “I appreciate all the sup-

port!”

“It’s not easy and I’m going to push really hard,” says Byrnell.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge. I appreciate everything. It’s unbelievable … all the support. I really appreciate everything very much!”

A GoFundMe page was started for Bobby and his family. To date, $13,395 has been raised of a $20,000 goal.

Carlyle Skating Club hands out year-end awards The Carlyle Figure Skating Club has recognized the accomplishments of several of its members during the 2020-21 season.

Rory Miller was named the Outstanding Skater Award winner.

She is a new StarSkater this year, and she jumped right in and is absolutely flourishing in the StarSkate Program.

“Rory has achieved all her Star 1 tests this year,” states her bio.

“The coaches cannot begin to commend Rory on all her success and growth she has achieved this year.

Rory listens intently in all her lessons to each and every instruction.”

People will often find Rory continuing each teaching point and progression beyond her lesson time.

This year has been like none other, but she has made the most of it. The coaches are sure she is smiling and enjoying every moment while at skating.

“Her joy is contagious, and the coaches thoroughly enjoy their time with Rory and wish her all the success in her skating career, and cannot wait to see what she achieves.”

Kaylee Mudrewich was named the top Star Skater for the year. Her coach, Dawn Brady, said Kaylee is a true example of a dedicated,

hard-working, kindhearted StarSkater.

“She has goals she strives to achieve, day to day as well as longterm goals,” said Dawn.

“Kaylee is one of the first ones on the ice and the last one to leave, using every last minute to the best of her ability.”

She is actively working on all areas of StarSkate, she is working on her Star 6 skills, Star 6 dance, Star 6 free skate and Star 7 artistic, with plans to test these at the end of the season.

Dawn cited a recent situation at skating, when the club had limited coaches and lessons, in which Kaylee showed her character.

“I offered Kaylee an opportunity for a private lesson rather than a group lesson that was originally scheduled, and she responded, ‘I would rather a group lesson for everyone.’

Her selfless act intern also benefited the skaters around her,” said Dawn.

The club can always count on Kaylee to demonstrate or run an errand around the rink without hesitation.

Kristen Gatapia was recognized in the CanSkate Division. She’s six years old and in her third year of skating.

Her coach said it is an absolute pleasure to be able to guide her.

“She always gives

her full attention and is always working hard,” said coach Brittany Rowe. “She always has a smile on her face and loves to be out on the ice.”

Kristen comes to CanSkate sessions twice a week and participates in the bridging program. She is currently working toward achieving her stage 6 badge.

“As soon as she steps out on the ice, she has the biggest and brightest smile on her face. She loves to skate and is always wanting to show off the newest skill she has learned.

Most recently it’s her forward and backward spirals,” states the bio.

Fellow skater Tiana Dellaleau said Kristen is a pleasure to work with out on the ice.

She loves to show her forward and backward cross cuts and her spirals.

“Kristen is always smiling and listens well when we are explaining a new skill to her and then is eager to go and try it. Kristen has a long skating career ahead of her and I can’t wait to see … all she can accomplish,” said Tiana.

Tiana, meanwhile, was named the top program assistant. A volunteer with the CanSkate program for six years, she started out by helping CanSkate sessions and is now a

very valuable program assistant.

“I am so grateful for her continued dedication to our club,” said coach Brittany Rowe.

“She comes to assist with our CanSkate session once a week and always does a fantastic job. Tiana is always the first person on the ice ready to set up her circuit for that day with a positive attitude and a smile on her face.”

She does a wonderful job with the skill circuits, Rowe said, making sure everything is set up properly and always ensures that skaters are having fun.

Tiana is always respectful, reliable and knowledgeable.

She works very well with skaters of all ages and skill levels.

“I can always count on her to be there. No matter how busy she may be, she always makes it a priority to be at CanSkate,” said Brittany. “There have been a few times this year where Tiana has had to fill in on days where she was not originally supposed to help with CanSkate but was always willing to drop what she had going on to be at the rink, eager to help with what I needed for our session that day.”

Also, Brynn Chapman was presented with the Grace Smyth Excellence in Artistry Award.

Government must remain accountable

By Murray Mandryk No government has ever been a paragon of virtue when it comes to being unaccountable to taxpayers.

And during a global pandemic when governments have to address deadly health concerns on very short notice, sometimes time-consuming protocols of accountability have been put aside.

We do elect governments to make choices and not every choice they make can be make through a referendum that determines what’s most popular.

In fact, the sharpest criticism Premier Scott Moe has received during this pandemic has been for simply following the closed-door advice of Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab, who has recommended closures and lockdowns.

But when it comes to spending public tax dollars, there can and should be very little compromise on accountability.

We all should get that.

In fact, politicians get that more than we do because they love to beat their opponents over their heads when accountability doesn’t happen.

That was surely the case when Moe has rightly criticized the federal government and Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for not delivering a budget during this pandemic.

But maybe Moe and his current Saskatchewan Party administration need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

That commitment came in the form of the Sask.

Party’s biggest 2007 election promise that: “A Saskatchewan Party Government will provide Saskatchewan people with more transparency and accountability than any previous government.”

There was a reason why the Sask. Party made such a bold, strong commitment.

It was a party that rose from the ashes of the old Progressive Conservative government — undoubtedly, the least accountable government in our province’s history if not the history of the entire country.

It didn’t even pass its last of nine consecutive deficit budgets that left the province in chaos and on the brink of bankruptcy.

Again, no government has ever been perfectly accountability. It’s worth reminding overly sanctimonious New Democrats that love to remind voters on the history of PC accountability that the last NDP government sure had its own penchant for unaccounted – for backroom deals to buy money-losing U.S. dot.com and to deceive the public on the ownership arrangement of Spudco that lost $36 million.

This was also taxpayers’ money.

The Saskatchewan Legislature has sat just eight days — the least in the country — since it passed the 2020-21 budget in mid-July. (And you may recall that the Sask. Party government did try to sneak in a “budget” in March with no revenue projections or deficit figure that turned out to be $2.4 billion).

Now, the Sask. Party government has set the 2021-22 budget date for April 6 — a month later than usual, meaning there will be that much legislative scrutiny by the time the assembly’s sitting ends just before the may long weekend.

In the meantime, we will simply be spending money through cabinet decree, including a recent one to increase spending on the pandemic to $322.8 million.

Maybe there’s little nefarious about this, given that it’s extra money for the Safe School Plan ($40 million), the Saskatchewan Health Authority ($76 million), the Saskatchewan Small Business Emergency Payment Program ($20 million), tourism ($17 million) and municipal grants ($14 million).

But it’s still our money and spending needs to be accounted for in the legislature in a thorough way.

Governments should never be allowed to forget that.

We’re drowning and it’s costing us billions

Shelley Luedtke It goes by many different names and timelines but the idea is the same — kickstarting the removal of clutter that seems to be an issue for many individuals and families.

We seem to be drowning in our belongings and have so much stuff we are spending big dollars trying to organize and store it. What doesn’t fit in our space gets moved off site.

There are more self-storage units in the United States than McDonald’s and Starbucks locations combined.

Most of it isn’t because people’s homes are too small. In fact, more than two-thirds of people renting storage units say they have garages and basements.

Over the last 50 years our homes have gotten bigger but people are using less space for living because more of the square footage is simply

10 things in our homes we do not use. Think about that. Fully 80 per cent of what fills our space we never use.

That’s why trying to rid yourself of 100 things may seem improbable at first, but far more doable once you really dig in and get honest. Granted, the first 100 may be the toughest, but it will absolutely get easier as you sense the space freeing up and realize how much money has been tied up in things you really didn’t have to buy.

So what’s next?

Give it away. All kinds of charities rely on the fundraising that comes with selling items to secondary markets. Other organizations can take we what give and use it to help others. What we aren’t using could be exactly what someone else needs.

There’s another step that follows, and that is to think twice before adding anything to the digital cart or acting on impulse before checking out. The best thing we can do to save our money, free up our time, and enjoy our space is to ask ourselves if we really need to add to our accumulation.

Perhaps the designer has given us some pretty powerful words to keep in mind. You already have everything you need. That’s my outlook.

At the end of each episode designers stage the space to look its absolute best by bringing in fantastic art, beautiful furniture and just the right touches to finish off a professional look. But one of the shows had an interesting twist in that it repurposed items the homeowner already had.

They might refinish or recover something, rearrange items amongst rooms, or clear our what didn’t work, but that’s it.

No new pieces added.

When the homeowner catches a first glimpse of their redesigned space, they often can’t believe that what they are looking at is their own stuff.

The designer would tell them, “You already have everything you need.”

We are such consumers. We buy, buy, buy until we run out of space to put stuff, and then we become overwhelmed by how much we have and need to buy, buy, buy to solve our storage problems.

The first step is to start the clear out. We need to look again at what we have and ask ourselves if it’s something we need to keep.

storing stuff.

A lot of the advice given to deal with the situation is to take small steps toward the big picture. Thirty items in 30 days. One hundred items in 100 days. Fifteen-minute fling, 27-fling Boogie.

Five-minute room challenge. And on it goes.

It’s all about tackling the stuff that is spilling out of our closets, storage rooms and piling up on flat surfaces.

It is projected we will spend $19.5 billion in home organization products in 2021. Think about that for a moment.

Almost $20 billion on stuff to store our stuff.

Not only that, but we will spend an additional $3 billion on what we already own, but can’t find.

So what is all this stuff doing to us? One survey found that 91 per cent of people describe feeling overwhelmed by the clutter and 57 per cent are so stressed they feel it is insurmountable.

Psychologists say we are less productive, more irritable, and far more distracted as a result.

I love watching home renovation and design shows. Whether it’s helping homeowners sell their house or turning a disaster into a dream home, there are common denominators that designers tell their clients.

The Einarson rink went 7–1 in the round robin, with their only loss coming against Ontario's Rachel Homan. They qualified for the championship round, where they

went 3-1. Their combined 10-2 record left them as the second seed, so they had to go through the semifinal, which they won 9-3 over Alberta’s Laura Walker, to reach the final.

Sweeting was named the First Team All-Star third for the second year in a row.

Oxbow’s Tanner Jeannot makes his NHL debut Tanner Jeannot has been rewarded for his outstanding start to the 2020-21 hockey season.

The Nashville Predators announced Monday they had recalled Jeannot, who hails from Oxbow, to their taxi squad. He made his NHL debut Tuesday night in the Predators 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

He had six minutes and 28 seconds of ice time.

Jeannot, 23, has

posted three goals and eight points in six games for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, which is tied for the third-most points on his team and tied for the fourth-most points in the AHL. He is on a five-game point streak that began on Feb. 6 and has included two multi-point efforts.

He is also plus-eight for the Wolves, who have a perfect 7-0 record.

The NHL created taxi squads, consisting of four to six players per team, for this season.

Players will practise and travel, and be available in case a team needs to recall a player on short notice.

Jeannot played minor hockey in southeast Saskatchewan, with his last season coming with the Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins in 2012-13, when he recorded 15 goals and 24 points in 32 games.

He then spent a year playing midget AAA with the Yorkton Maulers, and four seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League. In his final season of junior hockey in 2017-18, he had 40 goals and 80 points in 72 games for Moose Jaw. Jeannot parlayed his time with Moose Jaw into a contract with Nashville. He is in his third season with the Predators organization.

Usually one can bank on spring breakup being announced around March 15, give or take, but with warm weather in the forecast for southern Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Highways announced on March 1 that winter weights were coming off for highways in southern Saskatchewan.

Effective Monday at 12:01 a.m., winter weight designations for some highways in southern Saskatchewan were removed.

Allowable weights will return to normal regulation weights on 52 specific roads in 101 rural municipalities, the ministry said in a release.

Ministry of Highways staff carefully monitor conditions to ensure this return to regulation weight happens at the appropriate time and highways are protected from potential damage.

As an example of the warm weather expected, Estevan’s forecast highs according to Environment Canada for the week include 9 C on Wednesday, 10 C on Thursday, 13 C on Friday and 15 C on Saturday. Regina’s forecast is similar to Estevan’s, and Swift Current’s goes even higher, with a forecasted high of 19

C on Saturday.

The early onset of spring breakup will have a significant impact on Saskatchewan’s winter oil drilling season, which usually starts to shut down the second week of March.

Help Tom Smith in his fight against cancer

By Laura Kish For those of you that have not yet heard, Tom Smith of Kipling has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – a diagnosis which he definitely wasn’t expecting.

Smith hadn’t been feeling well and started experiencing symptoms of indigestion in early December, which eventually forced him to seek medical attention.

Since meeting with local physicians, Smith has travelled to several additional medical centres and endured multiple tests and procedures.

He thought maybe it was gallbladder troubles. He was sent for an ultrasound and a CT scan and had his first surgery within a week.

After taking a biopsy, Smith received unfortunate confirmation in late December that he indeed had cancer.

Given only months to live, Smith chose to accept surgery Feb. 18 as his only means of giving him a fighting chance at extending his life.

After surgery Smith will be unable to return to work for several months while he recovers at home. Smith is expected to need additional chemotherapy treatment once fit to do so, which will again further extend his inability to return to work and provide for his wife and himself.

“I know most of us have either directly or indirectly been around

or involved with a loved one, friend, and or colleague that has been forced down this road of uncertainty,” said good friend Dwayne DeDecker. “The stress and financial burdens about to be endured by Tom and Mandy over the next few months are going to be tough. I am asking that you take a moment and think about them.

“Most of us know Tom as a very giving person, the type of guy that would give the shirt off his back for anyone that needed it, if it meant he could help. I believe you would have a very tough time to find someone that Tom hasn’t helped in some form or fashion in their past.”

“If now you can find it within your heart to consider Tom and provide any financial assistance it would be greatly appreciated during his greatest time of need,” said DeDecker, who spearheaded a GoFundMe page.

“These donations will be used to assist Tom and Mandy for travel and lodging expenses they will incur while away from home, plus help cover their day-to-day cost of living once Tom is able to return home and begin his long road to recovery.”

“Tom did come through his surgery successfully, and spent time recovering in hospital at Saskatoon University Hospital,” explains DeDecker. “The surgery did not go completely as planned, and

The goal will be once the chemo has shrunk his tumor enough to return for surgery and complete the remaining portion of his initial surgery.

“Tom returned home to continue his recovery at home. We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed as he goes through the next phase of his battle.”

“Our son Peter from Calgary joined us in Saskatoon to be of support to Mandy,” explains Tom and adds “Miki, Becky and family kept in

close contact daily.”

Tom will start chemotherapy in about six to eight weeks when he has recovered from his surgery.

A GoFundMe page was started for Smith and his family on Feb. 16. To date, more than $32,000 has been raised of a $25,000 goal through both the GoFundMe page and donations made through the Cornerstone Credit Union’s Kipling branch.

Telemiracle 45 raises more than $5.6 million in 20 hours for the medical needs of Saskatchewan people through the Kinsmen Foundation for specialized medical and mobility equipment, and assistance with medical travel. The foundation receives over 1,000 applications for assistance from Saskatchewan residents each year.

One of the many highlights of this year’s show were the 75 talented Saskatchewan performers who appeared on throughout the telethon and on the Countdown to TeleMiracle pre-show, streamed live at telemiracle.com.

Not only did these acts showcase the breadth of talent from every corner of the province, they also raised money for the telethon – which was once again matched

Gordon F. Kells High School Cougar corner Submitted by Dean Zaccharias The students wore their pink shirts on Feb. 24 to participate in Pink Shirt Day at Gordon F. Kells High School.

The origin of the day dates back to a small Canadian town in Nova Scotia where senior students made one small, but significant act supporting a fellow student. In 2007, Grade 12 students David Shepherd, Travis Price and a few friends saw that a Grade 9 student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.

They knew they had to do something to show that this kind of behaviour was not okay. They decided to go out and buy a bunch of pink shirts and hand them out to other students to wear. By the end of that week, most of the students in the school were wearing pink shirts to show support for the Grade 9 student who was bullied.

Pink Shirt Day reminds us that we need to work together to eliminate

bullying. We need to respect each other, and practice kindness, instead of tearing each other down. It is the work of the students, staff, parents, and entire school community that will make a positive difference to bring an end to bullying.

A new reporting system called Edsby has been rolled out for parents to use. Its purpose is to improve electronic communication between school and home. When your child is unable to attend for any reason, please call or email the office or put in an absence through the Edsby app.

“Our show producers did a great job throughout the entire year of planning, working closely with the health authorities and making sure everyone involved with this year’s production followed all the COVID safety guidelines and protocols,” said Angstadt. “We did our best to follow, keep up with and exceed all the COVID safety protocols and guidelines at all times.”

Despite changes and challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the final numbers on the video tote board showed an off-air total of $5,630,215. The total raised by TeleMiracle since 1977 is now over $145 million.

“The generosity of Saskatchewan people is amazing and it showed again this year in their support of TeleMiracle,” said TeleMiracle 45 board chair Brian Angstadt. “Once again, TeleMiracle brought our province together and the impact of these donations will be felt across Saskatchewan during these times when residents need it the most.”

COVID-19 vaccine administered in the southeast The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Carlyle and other communities The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said the Pfizer vaccine is being delivered. They have just over 1,000 doses for South East Zone 4.

Long-term care and health centres in Gainsborough, Oxbow, Redvers, Carnduff and Estevan are slated to receive the vaccine.

This will be the first dose only, with the second doses scheduled for these groups at the end of March.

This marked one of the first times that the COVID-19 vaccine has been administered in South East Zone 4, which includes Carlyle. There was a vaccine clinic at the White Bear First Nation in the second week of February.

White Bear has had

43 cases of COVID-19 so far this year. None of those cases are now considered active.

Those who are eligible to receive the vaccine at this time will be contacted directly to have their appointments scheduled. Due to limited vaccine supply at this time, the SHA says immunization of populations over the age of 70 years is randomized for equitable access and the SHA asks for patience as they continue to provide the vaccine to all eligible persons through phase 1 of the rollout.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was just one active case of COVID in South East Zone 4, which has a population of more than 31,000 people, making it the sixthmost populous zone in the province.

In a news release sent out Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said 100 per cent of long-

term care homes across Saskatchewan have now received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine with ninety-one (91) per cent of residents choosing to receive the vaccine.

Fifty-three (53) per cent of facilities have received both their first and second dose.

Nine per cent of long-term care home residents were not immunized due to a variety of circumstances, such as the availability of residents at the time of vaccination, refusal to take the vaccine or a change in health status.

Ninety (90) per cent of personal care homes (PCHs) have now received their first doses.

Forty-three (43) per cent have received both their first and second doses.

This achievement comes less than two months after the first long-term care home resident in Saskatchewan received the CO-

VID-19 vaccine.

“Ensuring seniors living in long-term and personal care homes are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan,” said Everett Hindley, Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health minister.

“As the supply of vaccine hopefully continues to expand in the coming weeks, we will be able to quickly expand our vaccination efforts for seniors living independently, as well as our other priority groups.

“We look forward to the day when all Saskatchewan's seniors are fully vaccinated against the threat of COVID-19.”

Since the pandemic began a year ago, there have been over 40 outbreaks declared at longterm and personal care homes in Saskatchewan, resulting in over 100 deaths.

“God promised it to you,” he told them.

“He has protected you from enemies that were

far too strong for you to combat in your strength.

Now, go in and possess the land.”

I’ve read that portion countless times during my lifetime but contemplating yet another day of isolation and mask-wearing, I realized how many times I’ve failed to possess His promise of peace and protection, no matter what may transpire and what I may face. The secret isn’t in God’s word for that never fails; rather, the secret lies in my willingness to possess the promise.

Even beyond physical protection, is God’s promise to grant peace when we’re willing to forgive those who have hurt us, or others to forgive us when we’ve hurt them. It’s not my responsibility to make decisions for others but it sure is mine to make sure I do the right thing.

As we grow in our Christian faith, our ability to rest in and claim those promises grows.

“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised.

I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:3,4) Let’s remember: God’s promises are infallible, possessing them is our responsibility.

Alida’s grocery store has new owners Submitted by Edel Cowan Sincere sympathy is extended to Bonnie and Roy Farr and family on the death of her mother Ethel Curtis of Brandon, Man., on Feb. 24. She was in her 90s.

She is survived by her three daughters, Glenda (Allan) Evans (Winnipeg), Bonnie (Roy) Farr (Alida), Lana (Rod) Dyck (Balsacs, Alta.), and their families and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Ross in December 2020, her eight Ball siblings and their spouses. Her service will probably be held together with her husband’s

at a later date. Condolences are also extended to all family members and relatives.

On March 1, Gail McLachlin retired from 20 years as owner/operator of Centre Street Groceries and turned the reins over to the new owners and operators, Xue and Ji Fang. We will take this opportunity to welcome Xue and Ji and their family of four to Alida and to our little community.

They have two children attending Oxbow Prairie Horizons School, one preschooler and their eldest is learning English.

Wendy Nelson and Gail will continue to help the new owners at the store.

This brings us to another month’s end and March will be here – and the big question is will March come in like a lion or a lamb? By the looks of the forecast it will be a lamb – which I will appreciate, as I’m sick and tired of long cold winter days, even if it was a nice winter.

Just can’t wait for warmer weather and sunny days and to get my fingers into the garden dirt. I have noticed that the sun is coming up earlier in the mornings and going down later in the evenings, so it must be true – spring is coming.

This week’s happenings from the Wawota area Submitted by Myrna Olson Happy birthday to Jack Aulie, who turns 80 on Feb. 28. Jack is a resident at Deer View Lodge.

Word has been received of the passing of Arlene (Jones) Sostorics on Jan. 30. She was 80 years old and lived in Kipling. She was predeceased by her husband Roger and siblings Donna, Rick and Ron Jones. She is survived by daughters Pamela and Paula and their families, siblings, Barry, Allan and Lana Doke and their spouses and families.

Arlene was the daughter of Sam and Madge Jones who managed the Uptown Cafe in Wawota in the 1950s.

Once again, Saskatchewan’s Telemiracle was a great suc-

cess. Even in these trying times the people of this province have huge hearts. It was online this year from Saskatoon. In a 20-hour span on Feb. 27 and 28, $5.6 million was

raised.

Dale McVicar from Saskatoon visited with his mother Audrey for several days last week.

tany will be married at Echo Lake. She is marrying Riley Schnell on July 31st. Although plans are being put in place with COVID restrictions some may have to be changed.

Envision encouraging the public to celebrate Maryfield Sunrise International Women's Day on March 8 Villa happenings The Envision Counselling and Support Centre is encouraging the public to mark International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8.

This day provides an opportunity to reinforce the belief that everyone has a role to play in building a more gender-balanced world.

IWD is recognized worldwide as a time to celebrate efforts over the years to attain equality and justice for women and their children.

Every year, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. This year, Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge.

“A challenged world is an alert world,” said Juli Dzuba, Envision Counselling outreach co-ordinator. “We’ve had so much time over this past year to reflect on how we act and think. This is just another opportunity.”

Dzuba said challenging inequality can benefit all areas of society. She cites research from the National Democratic Institute showing that women in politics raise issues that others overlook, pass bills that others oppose, invest in projects others dismiss and seek to end abuses that others ignore.

Challenging gender bias and inequality encourages both young girls and boys to recognize their potential at an early age instead of being discouraged by outdated gender stereotypes.

“We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. And we can seek out and celebrate women's achievements.

Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world,” said Dzuba.

To celebrate this day, Envision Counselling will participate in a social media campaign, where individuals can strike the #ChooseToChallenge pose. The social me-

dia posts will highlight the organization’s commitment to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world.

“We encourage southeast Saskatchewan to join the conversation and share your thoughts with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and tag us @EnvisionCSC,” said Dzuba. “From challenge comes change, so we’re hoping to see engagement and awareness as people choose to challenge.”

Envision Counselling and Support Centre has been supporting southeast Saskatchewan for over 25 years by providing innovative programming and diverse counselling and support services to individuals, couples and families.

Submitted by Betty Walker It’s been two weeks since I last reported the news but that was because there was nothing different to report.

This week we have some exciting news, we get to have one family visitor by appointment.

Of course we would like more, but I have learned that instead of wishing for more, we have to be thankful for what we have. In the future it will possibly be more.

Things are going along as usual, and for that I give thanks every

day for the wonderful care we get. We also spent the last 10 days watching the Scotties, which was exciting as some curlers are well known in this area and from Maryfleld.

I cannot believe it is the first of March already and so our thoughts are looking forward to spring, warmer temperatures and getting into the courtyard for some fresh air.

We have a new resident moving in this week, Marilyn Bourgon from Wawota, and we give her a big welcome and hope her stay with us will be enjoyable.
