Supporting Teresa Ottenbreit with her cancer fight Teresa Ottenbreit (nee Penney), originally from the Langbank area and now living in Alberta, has been quietly battling cancer for several years.

According to a GoFundMe campaign that is underway for her, she has never complained nor asked for help.

Ottenbreit is an amazing woman; generous, kind, loving, goofy, intelligent and incredibly strong.

“She is the rock of her family, loving partner to Billy, and nurturing mother to Devron, Nick, Carver, and Wristyn,” the campaign states.

She was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in May 2017. Due to the

location of the tumor, surgery was needed and at that time she started chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the treatments were unsuccessful and the cancer metastasized to the lungs and other areas of the body.

In July 2020, she underwent a second life-saving surgery that was very high risk to remove a mass that had spread very quickly through her ovaries and appendix.

Ottenbreit then decided to approach her treatments holistically with an integrative approach that includes alternative and conventional medicines.

She receives a number of treatments each week. Many of the current treatments are not covered by Alberta Healthcare and are quite expensive.

Her supportive partner Billy has been her primary caregiver as her care needs are significant, leaving them without a consistent source of income.

“We are kindly asking for support, to help Teresa on her journey to health. What we want more than anything is for you to see her as healthy, vibrant and capable of healing. We believe in the power of the collective mind and the power of our words, intentions and prayers,” the

GoFundMe page states.

Jill Lemon organized the fundraiser on behalf of Ottenbreit. As of Wednesday afternoon, it had raised $22,876 of its $50,000 goal.

Southeast MLAs react to provincial budget

By Laura Kish and David Willberg Two MLAs for southeast Saskatchewan are pleased with the contents of the provincial budget released last week.

Revenue is forecasted at $14.5 billion in 2021-22, with most revenue categories forecast to increase compared to the latest 2020-21 fiscal year forecast. Expense of $17.1 billion is projected, an increase of $1.0 billion compared to last year's document.

Cannington MLA Daryl Harrison and Moosomin MLA Steven Bonk said the budget will have an impact for people throughout the province.

Harrison said the home renovation tax credit will be available for people looking to update their homes, while the small business tax being reduced to zero will be a plus.

“The healthcare budget overall has been the biggest line item in the budget for years, and it continues to be so,” said Harrison. “Investing in healthcare, mental health and addictions, those are big pluses for southeast Saskatchewan and across the province.”

The oil and gas sector will benefit from methane emissions reduction projects.

“The reduction in the … royalties for the high water-cut wells was a big plus to local producers,” said Harrison.

This was the first budget since Harrison was elected as an MLA for the first time last October. He said it’s a fairly lengthy process, and a lot of information is gathered in the months prior to the document’s release.

“The finance minister and all of her team certainly put a lot of time and effort into it, and as the Sask.

Party government, we don’t like having a deficit budget, but when we need to, we have, and we certainly look forward to the day we can have a balanced budget and reduce debt,” said Harrison.

As for Bonk, he said lowering business taxes for every small business in the province will help them to recover from the pandemic and enable them to retain and hire more workers. The amount which small businesses can earn at the small business tax rate is $600,000, the highest threshold in Canada.

These tax reductions will benefit about 31,000 incorporated Saskatchewan small businesses, he said, saving them more than $150 million in provincial taxes over the three years of the program, for an average savings of more than $6,100 per Saskatchewan small business.

“Small businesses are a key driver of the Saskatchewan economy, employing nearly 150,000 Saskatch-

ewan workers. Lowering taxes for small businesses at this time will help sustain this vital sector of the economy,” Bonk said.

As for a new tax on electric vehicles, the purpose of this fee is to accommodate fairness, he said.

Electric vehicles contribute to wear and tear on the provincial road system, but since they do not consume traditional fuels, drivers of electric vehicles do not contribute to the maintenance and repair of provincial highways and roads through the Fuel Tax, which is the way drivers of vehicles using traditional fuels contribute.

At $150 per year, the fee is not expected to significantly increase the cost of ownership for electric vehicle drivers and was arrived at based on an estimate of what an average fuelusing vehicle contributes annually in fuel tax. Drivers of vehicles that use traditional fuels contributed almost $454 million of road use fuel tax

revenues to help fund nearly $616 million of provincial transportation expense, including highway and road infrastructure expense, in 2019-20 according to Public Accounts.

There will be record spending in the health sector, as health accounts for 38.2 per cent of the government total expenses.

The 2021-22 Budget protects Saskatchewan people through the pandemic, Bonk said, with direct funding to fight COVID-19 and record levels of investment into health care, education, social services and assistance and protection of persons and property.

“It builds, through $3.1 billion in capital investments to help our economy and create jobs. It will grow Saskatchewan through key investments and incentives and will keep life affordable for Saskatchewan people.”

The government does forecast a deficit of $2.6 billion for 2021-22 but they also see our fiscal path steadily improving as our economy recovers and grows in the coming years, with smaller projected deficits of $1.7 billion in 2022-23, $1.2 billion in 202324 and $770 million in 2024 -25. A return to balance is forecast in 202627. The 2021-22 budget protects, builds and grows Saskatchewan and charts a clear course for our province through the remainder of the pandemic and into the strong economic and fiscal recovery that will follow.

He also believes the $1.7 million for the Community Rink Affordability Grant, delivered in $2,500 increments to assist with minor COVID-related capital upgrades and operating costs in periods of reduced revenue , will be enough to cover operating grants during COVID. It will provide assistance alongside the recently announced SaskPower rink utility rebate.

Golf the scenic Moose Creek course

By Laura Kish Located in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, Oxbow is a thriving and progressive community.

It is located on the Bakken Play, one of the richest oil finds. Oil, agriculture and manufacturing are key contributors to their economy.

There are so many reasons why people want to visit the Oxbow area, one of them being the Moose Creek Golf Course.

Moose Creek Golf Course is a beautiful grass green, nine-hole golf course located at Moose Creek Regional Park.

They plan to be 'up and running' next week after the snow.

"We were making some repairs to our main bridge and that’s complete now," said Richard Lamontagne, spokesperson on behalf of the club.

"Our greenskeeper reports that everything looks great. Although it’s very dry just like every other course in the area."

"We’ve been manually watering," explains Lamontagne.

"The moisture in this snow will green everything up."

Moose Creek has anywhere from 120 to 130 regular members in their club, although that varies from year to year.

Oxbow has such a huge park with a total of 255 campsites, so the golf course has a lot of green fee players.

"There were only 14 campsites when we built the golf course so we’ve both grown together.

We started fundraising for our golf course in 2001 and we opened for business in 2004."

Moose Creek is a fairly 'young' course compared to many others in the area.

Oxbow's golf club has a very good, active board to help out with everything.

"I was president at 27 when we started fundraising," says Lamontagne. "There is a group of us who have been here since Day 1 and a whole bunch of

The club holds men’s night on Thursdays and ladies’ night on Wednesdays.

The COVID-19 rules have opened up a little bit as compared to last year.

"The sport was able to stay pretty active," says Lamontagne, who adds, "I think everyone had a pretty good year

last year despite COVID." Moose Creek Golf Club has some major tournaments in the fall, including their Oilmen’s tournament.

"We have so many campers that we like

to keep our summer months open for walkons," explains Lamontagne. "That’s pretty important to us."

Golfing, unlike many other sports, is one that can still be played.

By Laura Kish Venture out to the town of Lampman for a round of golf and take in the beautiful sites while you're there.

"Lampman is a vibrant, growing community in the heart of the oilfield in southeastern Saskatchewan with much to offer both young and old," said Mayor Jay Jones.

Blaise Fornwald, president of the Lampman Golf Board, gave an update of the local golf course in an interview.

"The course was very dry up until this timely snow," says Fornwald. "That was some great moisture, that's for sure."

The April storm left behind 12-15 centimetres by Monday evening.

"It (the course) is in good condition. We've been golfing for a week or so already," says Fornwald.

Fornwald explains a bit about the history of the course.

The Lampman Golf Course, which is situated at the west edge of the town, was started back in the mid 1980's.

They've had sand greens up until about four or five years ago when volunteers did a lot of fundraising to change over to artificial or turf greens.

They had a lot of volunteer help do a lot of the work themselves and then a company out of Calgary installed the greens.

The following year, after the greens were installed, they decided to go ahead and put irrigation in on the golf course with watered fairways and around the greens.

Golfers noticed a big difference in the course from then on.

The board noticed an increase in golfers once they installed the turf greens, as a lot of people just didn't want to bother golfing on sand greens anymore.

"Last year was our best year and I think it was because of COVID," explained Fornwald. "People couldn't do anything else so they took up golfing."

"We usually have approximately 20 to 25 family memberships, 35 to 40 singles and we also get a lot of walkons throughout the summer months.”

Although the club doesn't have regular men's or ladies' nights they do host a fun night on Wednesdays, welcoming all ages of men, women and youth.

Golfers bring whatever they want to barbecue and the

golf course supplies the salads and potatoes.

Everyone gets together for a social visit following their round of golf.

On a good night they would have over 20 golfers take part, that is all except for last year in the pandemic year.

Because of the pandemic, most clubs have noticed an increase in golfers, so in some ways a person has to look at the positive side of things every now and then.

There's been a lot of people out golfing already this year, before the spring blizzard.

"We've definitely seen some new golfers, some firsttime golfers, this year," says Fornwald.

Lampman's course is wide open so it's not a great deal of difficulty for most.

"We're not as expensive as some courses so it's economical for a first-time golfer and golfers who are learning," explains Fornwald and adds, "We do have rental carts here."

Once the membership is purchased a golfer can get out on the course as much or as little as they wish.

They don't have anyone sitting at the clubhouse so they run on a honour system with a

"We have a person that looks after bookings," says Fornwald. "With COVID you can't really just walk on, you have to have everything booked so there's numbers

posted at the clubhouse for that."

History holds people in higher or lesser regard depending on who is doing the narrating and which aspects of their life fits that narrative best, whether entirely true or not. Long after their death, opinions about contribution and even character strive to shape our contemporary image of them; an image whose accuracy is suspect or even unfair, and whose context is rarely explained. The myopic perspective does them, and history itself, a disservice.

I wouldn’t have had much in common with Mrs. Truman politically, but I think I would have quite liked her. She didn’t need to be the centre of attention – but instead put herself at the centre of the work. She didn’t seek credit for what was being done — but ensured the work was being done well. Not in it for what she could get out of it – but instead doing what was in the best interest of the public good.

History doesn’t always put the right people on pedestals. Nor does it always take the right ones down. People are far more complex than that and the telling of history needs to have the breadth to take that all in.

We need to be committed to the richness of the bigger stories, and far more frugal with the selective editing. That’s my outlook.

It is both a public building and private home that at various times has been called the president’s place or the executive mansion, but was officially named the White House in 1901.

Presiding over the mansion is a role for the First Lady; individuals who historically have either relished the role, or performed their necessary duties but felt unsettled by the absence of any real job description amidst a lengthy list of expectations.

While the First Family can enjoy all the amenities offered by the White House, there are a lot of expenses they pay out-ofpocket. Some presidents leave office carrying huge

ignated to run the White House. We sure could use a few like her today — public servants who treat the public purse with diligence and care.

She didn’t throw as many parties or live as glamorously as other first ladies, and history doesn’t hold her in the same fairytale mystique. So why am I so fascinated by her?

Because I almost wasn’t.

It all stems from a book about White House staff who worked directly with first ladies, documenting a changing role alongside a changing nation. As I got to the section about Bess Truman, I was tempted to skip past her pages and move on to someone more … fascinating. Notable. But I kept reading and within a few pages became rather intrigued by this understated woman.

I don’t know how Mrs. Truman would fare in the court of public opinion today. She didn’t make herself readily available to the media, she didn’t take on special causes but instead lent her time to a number of organizations, and she preferred quiet evenings in, rather than seeking the Washington spotlight. And she held some views that would not go over well today. She holds that in common with many historical figures.

As Mrs. Truman sat with staff each day to discuss menus, upcoming events, or the maintenance of the White House, it was clear frugality was to be the watchword. She was able to remember if someone had turned down an entrée at a dinner the night before and would request the uneaten portion be used in the day’s salad, or untouched desserts be saved.

One day when she was out of town, the president went fishing with friends. He asked the kitchen staff to prepare a snack they could enjoy on the water. With little wiggle room in the supplies that week, staff were thrilled to find a forgotten ice cream dessert that had been delivered in honour of the president’s birthday the week before.

They purchased some dry ice, packed the dessert, and sent the basket on its way. A few days later, when Mrs. Truman was going through the ledgers, she spotted an expenditure she knew nothing about and put the question to the staff.

It was the 75 cents spent on dry ice.

While some might think her frugal living was extreme, she knew where all the money was going – her own – as well as the government budget des-

The good news is we are getting a lot of vaccines in the arms of a lot of people and it is saving lives.

As of the writing of this, 457 Saskatchewan people have died of COVID-19-related illness — a devastating number. However, compare that with Manitoba that saw rampant outbreaks this winter in long-term care homes that have so far produced 951 deaths in that province.

Also as of the writing of this, 21.8 per cent of Saskatchewan people had received their first shot — second best in the nation, only slightly behind Quebec.

Admittedly, Saskatchewan also owns some less favourable statistics. Our 36,882 total cases have now slipped ahead of Manitoba.

While Saskatchewan has managed to keep down the death toll, we are seeing more people and younger people getting sicker. This is translating into longer stays in ICUs, tying up beds.

What we have been doing isn’t working as well as it we need it to work. Things needed to change.

For that that reason, the Saskatchewan Party did the right thing by changing its vaccine rollout strategy and extending some additional restrictions to the entire province.

Neither will be popular with critics of Premier Scott Moe’s government — many of whom vehemently argue that the Sask. Party administration needed to be more nimble in its approach to get vaccines to those more vulnerable, and needed to be much faster imposing further, more severe province-wide restrictions.

Such criticism has its validity. There has been a penchant within this government to move too slowly and cautiously when it comes to change. This is a growing problem in this third wave where new variants spread more rapidly to younger people who are getting sicker.

With a sizeable portion of Saskatchewan seniors and those over 50 years having received their first shots, it only makes sense to get vaccines to younger people who are most at risk of being potentially exposed because of their jobs.

Mere hours after saying during a rare Saturday morning sitting of the legislature that it just couldn’t move off its strategy of mass vaccinations based on age because it was the quickest way to get the vaccines out, the government opened up vaccines to younger police officers in Regina.

That was followed by an announcement two days later that police officers, firefighters, pharmacists and those who working in places with pharmacies would be prioritized as supplies were available.

Given that many pharmacies are located in urban grocery stores or in big box stores, that means we may be opening things up to a lot of younger and more vulnerable people working as cashiers.

While this could lead to more protection for frontline workers most exposed to the public, the problem may be that we don’t have the vaccine supply to go around.

AstraZeneca is not being doled out to those less than 55 years old because of rare blood clot cases.

Similarly, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been placed on pause because of extreme remote incidents of blood clotting.

To the chagrin of many in the province, Health Minister Paul Merriman re-imposed province-wide restrictions that limit households from visiting and limit church services to 30 people.

Many doctors and epidemiologists worry these measures and strategies are still not enough.

It’s been a long fight, but it looks like we all still have to do more.

Carivale’s Kade McMillen commits to play university hockey after finishing junior hockey The Estevan Bruins have announced that graduating defenceman Kade McMillen of Carievale has committed to play for the Trinity Western University Spartans USports program for the 2021-22 season.

McMillen played three seasons for the Bruins, logging big minutes on the blueline since his rookie year in 2018-19, while stepping into a leadership role, serving as an alternate captain for his final two seasons.

McMillen was also an offensive threat with 56 points (12 goals, 44 assists) in 113 games played, and was poised to hover around a point per game this year before the SJHL season ended in November.

McMillen was also chosen to represent the

Bruins at the annual SJHL Showcase in 2019 and 2020, and for a virtual showcase in 2021.

As a player who grew up in southeast Saskatchewan and played some of his minor hockey in Estevan, McMillen was one of the familiar faces for the Bruins out in the community during his time in Estevan. McMillen donated hundreds of hours to attending community events, appearing at minor hockey practices, signing autographs and chatting with Bruins’ supporters.

For his efforts, McMillen was named as both the Estevan Bruins RBC Community Ambassador and the SJHL’s RBC Community Ambassador in the 2019-20 season.

The recognition also

allowed McMillen to choose both the Carnduff Education Complex and Westview School in Estevan as recipients of a $1,000 donation.

“I’m very excited to further my education and hockey career at Trinity Western University. I cannot wait to be a part of the winning culture for the Spartans,” said McMillen.

The Spartans, based in Langley, B.C., are coached by Estevan native and former Bruin Barret Kropf. Kropf built the Spartans into a winner in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League, with championships in 2017 and 2018. They are preparing for their first season in USports men’s hockey.

“Throughout his U18 and junior A ca-

reer, Kade has been an elite performer at both ends of the ice. He has great leadership bloodlines, with his father being a captain in the WHL for a number of seasons. Kade has displayed that same leadership on and off the ice; and we are looking forward to him adding to our culture here,” said Kropf.

Estevan area the focus of April land sale

By Brian Zinchuk, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Saskatchewan's public offering of Crown petroleum and natural gas rights, held April 6, generated $1,925,874 in revenue for the province.

This is the first of six oil and gas public offerings for the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Energy and Resources.

There were 70 leases totalling 19,425 hectare posted and 38 leases purchased, totalling 7,608 hectares. The provincial average was $253 per hectare.

The Estevan area was the major focus for

bid activity, with leases within the region receiving both the highest bonus bid for a parcel of land as well as the highest dollars per hectare on a lease.

The highest bonus bid received on a parcel in this offering was $324,786 (or $627 per hectare) for a lease in the Estevan area. This lease, totalling 518 hectares, was awarded to Cougar Creek Land Ltd. and is prospective for oil in the Bakken Formation.

The highest dollars per hectare received in this offering was for a 64.8-hectare lease in the Estevan area by Crescent Point Energy Corp. They bid $220,554, or $3,406

per hectare, for this parcel that is prospective for oil, also in the Bakken Formation. Crescent Point was the most active bidder in this offering, picking up eight leases in the Estevan area totalling 2,137 hectares 22 kilometres north of Kisbey for $593,661.

In total, the Estevan area brought in $1,631,515 for 23 parcels encompassing 4,079 hectares. There had been 45 parcels posted totalling 13,112 hectares.

The Lloydminster area had four leases posted totalling 486 hectares.

Carlyle Town Council recap

By Lisa McCullough Members of Carlyle town council gathered on April 7 to discuss several things.

Council provided information on a recent strategic planning session.

On March 4, council participated in a closed-door meeting led by HMC Management Inc. During this session, council created a vision and mission statement, as well as established priorities for their four-year term. Council reviewed and adopted the strategic plan report and operations plan report at the April meeting.

Council has approved a half-time special projects co-ordinator position to work on many of the initiatives identified through the strategic planning

process; Dawn Faber will be filling this role. Council has also been discussing and working on the 2021 budget.

A few items that have been approved this year are the upgrading of two lawn mowers and new attachments to the Toolcat that was purchased last year.

Another item is a safe sidewalk assessment to improve the walkability of the community.

Council would like to let the community know that the assessment appeal deadline is May 14 for any person wishing to appeal their assessment values. Tax notices will be sent out after this deadline.

Also, there is a No Fee Day at the transfer station on May 29 for Carlyle residents during regular operating hours of 1-4 p.m.

SGI is seeing a decrease in distracted driving

By Ana Bykhovskaia The statistics for 2020 haven’t been finalized yet, but the preliminary data on distracted driving-related accidents remains pretty shocking.

According to Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations for Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), distracted driving, driver distraction or inattention contributed to more than 3,000 collisions last year, which resulted in approximately 600 injuries and 22 deaths in Saskatchewan.

“Those are just the collisions that get reported to us. Of course, every month, police issue hundreds of tickets related to distracted driving, either for cell phone use … or the other offence would be called driving without due care and attention.

So when you total those numbers up, on average, we saw about 520 tickets issued per month across Saskatchewan by police for one of those two offences,” McMurchy said.

While the numbers

still seem outrageous, SGI has seen a decrease in the amount of these kinds of offences over the past few years. For example, in 2019, they averaged 838 distracted driving/driving without due care tickets per month.

To assess the situation with distracted driving in the province, SGI also looks at the number of fatalities, injuries and collisions, and there was some good news with that data as well.

“We have seen those numbers trending downward. They can fluctuate a bit year to year, but we have seen those coming down,” McMurchy said.

McMurchy said there is more awareness about the problem now.

The significant increase in penalties for these offences that occurred last year also improved the situation.

“Penalties increased in 2020, which I think got a lot of people’s attention and may have influenced some people’s behaviour when it comes to deciding not to pick up their phone while they’re

An increase in penalties became an important factor in battling distracted driving. And while not everyone will react to this as a reason to change behaviour, for quite a few people, costly charges became a weighty argument.

“For some people, the prospect of getting a $580 ticket for having their phone in their hand, is something they just don’t want to risk.

So absolutely I think the increased penalties did play a role,” McMurchy said.

The increase in penalties was first announced in November of 2019, but it didn’t take effect until February of 2020. And even when the changes were first announced, SGI did see an immediate drop in the number of tickets that police were handing out on average per month.

A lot of focus is always on cell phones as the main source of distraction, but by no means is it the only thing that may distract drivers.

There is no way for the law to cover everything that may potentially turn into a distraction, but driving without due care and attention is an offence. Driving while smoking, eating, interacting with passengers and other presumably minor things will not necessarily result in a charge, but if they distract the driver enough, they will be viewed as an offence. McMurchy said most police officers that have ever worked in traffic enforcement, have “ridiculous” examples of other things that some drivers were distracted by, such as “reading a book, or eating a bowl of cereal, or filling out paperwork while they’re driving” and these things should not happen.

There is no law regulating where animals should be in a vehicle, but McMurchy said that if they are not transported properly, they might easily become a distraction.

If you get a second cell phone ticket within one year of being convicted, not only does the ticket go up to $1,400, but you will also have your vehicle impounded for a week. And if you get a third ticket within one year of being convicted, and this does happen on rare occasions … that third ticket will be $2,100 and another seven days of vehicle impoundment. And with every distracted driving ticket, there’s four demerits,” McMurchy said.

Remembering hugs we have been missing Submitted by Ken Rolheiser I would like you to recall the 10 best hugs you had before COVID-19 came along.

Now we remember again what we are missing. The lonely senior, the insecure teen, the – well, everyone who has missed family and friends and loved ones we cannot visit during the pandemic.

There is a story of a very pious Jewish couple who married with great love. In due time they had a son Mordecai who was rambunctious and zestful. The night before his studies were to be-

gin, his parents told him how important the Word of God was.

The next day Mordecai was in the woods, swimming and climbing the trees. He refused to go to his lessons.

They tried everything, even calling in the behaviorists and psychoanalysts who failed in turn. Finally they took him to The Great Rabbi.

“Leave the boy with me,” he said.

The Great Rabbi picked him up and held him silently against his heart.

The following day, Mordecai went to the synagogue to learn the Word of God. Mordecai

grew to be a great man.

People came to him and found peace.

Oh, the power of a hug. “Sometimes I just want someone to hug me and say, ‘I understand your pain. It’s going to be okay. Here’s a coffee and two million dollars…”

They say a small hug is worth a million unspoken words. We have been getting the words lately, but missing the hugs. Small wonder there is so much depression and anxiety in our world.

One of my 10 hugs remembered was visiting my granddaughter in her first month of life. I

just sat and held her for 2 1/2 hours, storing it up. She even rested a little past her feeding time.

On a second visit, after holding her for some time, she awakened, listened to my gibberish for a while, and then gave me the sweetest smile that surely came from an angel.

And I reflected on that. We should put ourselves into God the Father’s arms and rest there for a while. We should awaken and give Him a smile. I know he loves us more deeply than I am capable of loving.

We can enjoy God’s embrace when we are

in communion with Jesus. St. Teresa of India tells us when she and her nuns were exhausted, they would seek the Lord in communion at mass and this would restore them.

We need to become like little children, snuggled in those fatherly arms. “Keep holding me tight, Abba.”

Allow the Lord to touch us.

“He will heal our wounds, our brokenness,” Father Brendan McGuire says. “When we come to this altar today, we come to receive that Body and Blood of Christ. That is his kiss of love. ‘I love you. Yes.

I know what you have done. I still love you.’”

Jesus said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” (Matthew 23:37).

Let the Great Rabbi Jesus hold us and let us listen to His heart beat.

Lord, it surprises me how much you love me.

You whisper softly, and you are found in gentleness. Open my heart to your daily gifts. Let me be gracious for all your love that teases our senses daily.

Small modular reactor study released The premiers of Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta joined virtually to release a study by power utilities in three partner provinces and to formally welcome Alberta as a signatory to the small modular reactor (SMR) memorandum of understanding (MOU).

With the addition of Alberta to the MOU, all provinces involved have agreed to collaborate on the advancement of SMRs as a clean energy option to address climate change and regional energy demands, while supporting economic growth and innovation.

The SMR feasibility study, formally requested as part of the MOU in December 2019, concludes that the development of SMRs would

SMRs are nuclear reactors that produce 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity or less. They can support large established grids, small grids, remote off-grid communities and resource projects.

The study, conducted by Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, NB Power and SaskPower, identifies three streams of SMR project proposals for consideration by the governments of Ontario, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.

Stream 1 proposes a first grid-scale SMR project of approximately 300 MW constructed at the Darlington nuclear site in Ontario by 2028.

Stream 2 i​ nvolves two fourth generation, advanced small modular reactors that would be developed in New Brunswick through the construction of demonstration units at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

By fostering collaboration among the various research, manufacturing, federal and provincial agencies, an initial ARC Clean Energy demonstration unit plans to be ready by 2030. Moltex Energy Inc.’s waste recycling facility and reactor is preparing to be ready by the early 2030s.

Through ongoing support and collaborations, these advanced technologies could start being deployed as early as 2030 in support of the industrial needs in areas like Saskatchewan and Alberta, and indeed around the globe.

Stream 3 proposes a new class of micro-SMRs designed primarily to replace the use of diesel in remote communities and mines. A five-MW gas-cooled demonstration project is under way at Chalk River, Ont., with plans to be in service by 2026.

The report identifies the potential for all three streams to create employment and economic growth benefits for Canada, as well as opportunities to export technology and expertise to address global issues such as climate change and energy reliability.

The next action identified in the MOU is development of a joint strategic plan, to be drafted in collaboration by the governments of Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta. The plan is expected to be completed in the spring of 2021.

“Today’s announcement confirms the commitment of our provinces to advancing SMRs as a clean energy option, leveraging the strength and knowledge of each of our jurisdictions,” said Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. “This study confirms the feasibility

of small modular reactors in Canada and outlines a path forward to deploy this new clean, safe, reliable and competitively priced power.

This new technology will help attract investment, create high-skilled jobs and contribute to our growing economy.”

“Our government believes the best way to ensure that Canada becomes a leader in advanced small modular reactor development and deployment is through continued engagement and partnerships,” said New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs. “New Brunswick has already attracted two tremendous vendors in ARC Clean Energy Canada and Moltex Energy who are now developing their capacity and generating local economic development in the province.

New Brunswick is well positioned to be a world leader in the SMR field.”

Alida news - recreation board fundraiser a success Submitted by Edel Cowan Hope everyone enjoyed their spring break. Now students will have two weeks of online learning, thanks to this pandemic showing its face once again.

Good luck students, I’m sure you would just as soon be back at school with your friends and teachers. Hopefully you will be back soon and can resume “normal” school activities once again.

The Alida Rec Board held their first online auction from April 9-11 and the last time I checked it out it was looking like it would be a successful event for them. They are to be supplying me with a writeup when all is figured out.

The COVID vaccinations are continuing and some have been going to different centres in the area for their shots. We’re waiting for our second shot, which hopefully will be soon.

I sure do encourage you

to get your vaccinations. Now with the variants becoming ramped as well, we do have to get everything under control, and the sooner the better.

We received a little precipitation over the weekend – starting with a little rain on Sunday, enough to dampen everything and to fill my water bucket from house runoff, which sometime during the night turned to snow. Again we just received a nice light covering. At least it will help a wee little bit to dampen the

dryness. The weather forecast stated that we could receive more moisture during this week. I sure hope so as we sure do need the moisture.
