Walking for the children

White Bear First Nations community members, and others who wished to show their support, came together at noon on Wednesday to march in memory of the 215 children whose remains were found near a former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C., and to support those who survived the residential schools. New spray park open in Carlyle’s Centennial Park

By Kaitlyn Meisner The long-expected Carlyle Spray Park opened to public use on June 1 at 3 p.m. at Centennial Park.

Carlyle Spray Park, which took about a month to construct, and was delayed due to COVID-19, has been busy since it open. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the only rules, according to Jennifer Sedor, the Mayor of Carlyle, are: “No glass bottles. Don’t bring your dog … [and] play safe.”

Plans on the Spray Park started around

January but were delayed due to COVID restrictions. However, the town was able to get government funding through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) and was still able to finish the park for the summer of 2021.

Sedor also added that she believes the Carlyle Spray Park has great potential for the community, in business, but also in building relationships with people within the community.

“I really think it’s going to be a coming together point in our community. I really do.

I think it’s something that is pre-packed. It’s acceptable for all age groups. It’s acceptable for all activity levels … for every income level … Especially after this pandemic, it’s good to be able to meet up with your neighbours … I think it’s going to be a wonderful point of interest.

“I think it’s going to be a tourism draw.

I think it’s going to boost sales on our Main Street, because it’s so close to Main Street …

I think it’ll be a boost to our campgrounds … [it’s] one more reason to camp in Carlyle.”

It was a cool long weekend at the lakes

By Laura Kish It seems to be a tradition – to get cool weather and sometimes even snow on the Victoria Day long weekend.

Due to the weather conditions, campgrounds at the lakes certainly weren’t overcrowded.

Marie Littlechief, interim park manager at White Bear Lake, says “It was pretty slow due to the cool long weekend weather. So far we only have the seasonal campers in.”

“We opened full camping at the beginning of this week,” explains Littlechief. “The seasonal campsites are basically full throughout the summer.”

“There is nothing planned

for the upcoming season as of yet but everything is dependent on COVID restrictions, bylaws and guidelines,” says Littlechief.

“Despite a cool long weekend, campgrounds were not quite half full due to the weather,” says Ainsley Sauter, park administrative supervisor at Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

“Because of the cold, rainy weather there weren’t as many people around,” says Sauter.

“All 60 seasonal sites were booked within minutes on launch day back in April,” she added.

“One event we have planned so far for the sum-

mer is the Canada Day Parade. Visitor experiences will advertise programming and events in the future depending on the COVID-19 situation and where the re-open plan is at. Be sure to follow SaskParks on Facebook and Instagram for updates and notifications on events and programming,” she said.

Kim Brown, park manager at Moose Mountain Provincial Park, adds: “An additional event this summer includes the Cabin Fever Art Festival at Moose Mountain Provincial Park on Saturday, July 24.”

ewan Parks special event to let us know that you're joining us for the fun. Admission to special events is free with valid park entry.”

Pick up a trade, practice an art or learn a craft at Moose Mountain's Cabin Fever Art Festival. Moose Mountain is home to a small colony of cabins that house local artists throughout the summer. On July 24, witness art take over the park with exciting art lessons, thrilling demonstrations, and captivating performances.

Vendors will be set up throughout the park's beach and chalet grounds and include blacksmith, woodworking and pottery demonstrations; sculpture and beading workshops; music, dance and spoken word performances; and last but certainly not least, a variety of scrumptious food and refreshment vendors to refuel.

Oxbow business to celebrate 10th anniversary

By Ana Bykhovskaia Oxbow Timber Mart has made it through 10 diverse years and they are happy to celebrate their anniversary together with their customers.

A lot may have changed in a decade, but the experience in the field and the understanding of the needs of customers just kept growing.

Ten years ago, when Cory Mercer, the business owner, was looking ahead and seeking new opportunities, his background in construction made him turn towards building supplies.

"I was looking to transition into a job that I can continue doing as I got older, and maybe wanting to work a little less physical, but still in the same basic field of my expertise. So that seemed to make a good fit coming from construction, going into a lumberyard, home renovation type centre. And it just seemed to be a natural fit," explained Mercer.

Starting his first retail business was different from previous experience. This adventure had a lot of learning curves along the way.

"There was a lot to learn. We made a few mistakes early on. It's a lot different than I had anticipated from construction. Although we're using similar products, and the same principle, applying it to running a retail business is entirely different than to a construction company. So we had a lot of learning lessons early, early on.

The first few years were a little difficult, to say the least," Mercer said.

During the early years of Timber Mart, the economy was still booming. The later decline brought in new challenges. The business had to optimize their expenses and Mercer had to take on more work and learn more, which allowed

him to better understand all the fine points of the industry.

"This is 10 years now. I have a pretty good understanding of the business and what needs to happen and how things work. And I still get overwhelmed a little bit once in a while.

But for the most part, we manage. And hopefully, once we get done with all these COVID restrictions and start to get back to normal, we could start to hire more people and get the workforce back up," Mercer said.

The slowdown also had its positive effects on the business.

"Slowing down forced us to really evaluate how we ran the business, procedures and policies, and our inventory levels and all that boring stuff. But what that allowed us to do was decide on how many people we needed, what jobs they needed to do, and how it needed to be done," Mercer said.

A building supplies business requires strong planning skills.

The store manager has to decide what to have in the store in winter by late spring or early summer, and the other way around. Eight months in advance they need to forecast what customers will want in the next season, while still keeping in mind everything happening at the store at the moment. COVID-19 made this task even harder, with supply chains often being interrupted and things taking longer to arrive.

Mercer said that the advance demand forecasts weren't that easy to get a handle on, but they got better with time and now, even despite all the challenges, the business keeps slowly but gradually growing.

"I'm very proud of the fact that in the last four years, we have grown small percentages each year. Every year we're growing on sales numbers. That's good. And we're doing more with fewer people.

We have a more stream-

lined operation, which has given us the ability to expand a little bit, just on our product selection. And this year has been a little challenging on inventory levels because things are really hard to get. But we've been, I think, better on our overall inventory numbers than we've ever been just because of our efficiency."

They were able to bring in new products in different categories to ensure that any customer would find what they need to accomplish their building or gardening projects.

At Oxbow Timber Mart, a lot of work is done by a few people, and Mercer said that the efficient system they have in place now helps them to keep progressing despite all the challenges.

"My team here, we do an awful lot of work for a few people just because we are pretty efficient. So I'm really proud of that. It's been a hard, hard lesson learned. And it's been a lot of work to get here.

But now that we're at this point, it's very rewarding to see that we're actually getting somewhere. And if the economy gets a little stronger, then it will be even better for us. But if it stays exactly as it was right now, we would be just fine," Mercer said.

While COVID negatively affected many things, there were some positive effects as well.

The demand for Timber Mart's products went up and the foot traffic significantly increased.

Mercer said they were happy to see people doing projects that they probably wouldn't do if not for the pandemic.

"That's been exciting because you get to see a whole bunch of new people. And it's always fulfilling from our side of things when you see somebody take on a project that they were maybe a little unsure of, but when it's all set and done and complete, they're over the moon

And that's satisfying to be part of that, to see somebody's end product. If there's renovations, they sometimes will come in and share pictures with us. And that's really satisfying from our side of things

because you really feel like you help somebody get what they want," Mercer shared.

The business will celebrate their anniversary on June 9 with food trucks serving smoked meats, coffee and treats in front of the store. There will

also be some good deals for the customers. Also, they will run a charitable event where a portion of sales from June 9 will be matched by a donation by Timber Mart and will go towards the Souris Moose Creek Wildlife Federation.

Moe’s big push for vaccination to open up Sask.

Well, if you want to freely move about, sit in a full Mosaic Stadium to watch a ‘Rider game and get rid of those masks once and for all, a lot more of us need one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

You need it, you and friends need it and the crazy old guy that lives at the edge of town and talks to himself needs it.

Right now, convincing everyone in Saskatchewan they need that first dose remains Premier Scott Moe’s biggest challenge, although it may soon be exceeded by the challenge not too far down the road of getting us that second dose.

Both these challenges stand in the way of the premier’s bold new goals he set out this week.

At his weekly press conference, Moe updated his reopening plan with some slightly more ambitious vaccination goals and some very ambitious reopening plans so that we can “return to normal.”

The slightly tougher goals are an addition to his three-stage plan announced early last month, and call on Saskatchewan to have 70 per cent of everyone in this province 12 years and older get at least one dose of vaccine.

If that goal is met, come July 11, Saskatchewan people can stop wearing their masks and we can all return to large gatherings like weddings or sporting events.

In order to make this happen we will have to meet that 70 per cent threshold by June 20, so Moe is calling on people to get out and get that first dose as quickly as possible.

As of the day Moe made his latest announcement, 66 per cent of all adults and 62 per cent of those 12 and older had received at least one dose of vaccine. To meet the new goal, we need 75,000 more people who haven’t been vaccinated to get that first dose.

Notwithstanding a slowing down in certain age brackets after the initial rush to get vaccines, we are well on our way. As Moe noted, people of all ages have been coming in for their first vaccinations long after their age group became eligible to do so.

In his big push, Moe further noted that his province’s vaccination rate has moved ahead of that of the United States — at least, when it comes to getting a first dose. In the U.S., we are now seeing stadiums and arenas open up for baseball, basketball and hockey.

However, the U.S. is far ahead of us when it comes to people getting that second dose — what everyone, including Moe, insists is required to be completely safe.

This leaves the premier and the province with a bit of a delicate balancing act.

It is undoubtedly a priority for more people to get that first dose. There is even legitimate reason to question whether the re-open plan’s 70 per cent threshold shouldn’t be higher.

That the plan does not have any second-dose threshold requirement is also troubling to many who wonder whether people will see second doses as less of priority once things open up.

Already, many seniors have become frustrated by not being able to book appointments for that second dose.

Moe has a bold plan that depends on something he can’t fully control — us going out and getting vaccinated.

to prove it wouldn’t be a problem, she agreed. Her husband noticed changes in her in less than 48 hours, and more significantly, she noticed it in herself. On day four she described feeling more peaceful, content, and more patient with their three-year-old daughter.

She began to recognize how often she was comparing her home, her appearance, her job and her family to people she shouldn’t have cared so much about.

“I had no idea how much damage I was inflicting on myself,” she said later.

She now puts limits on her screen time, goes for a walk with her family each day to enjoy nature, plays more with her daughter and says she can’t believe she was spending so much time watching other people’s lives. Perhaps not unrelated, their second child is on the way.

The quote “comparison is the thief of joy” has been attributed to several figures throughout history, but no matter who said it first, it is as true today as ever. A life lived comparing ourselves to others is a life robbed of joy. We need to stop obsessing about the versions of life others are putting out there and get back to showing appreciation and finding contentment in our own.

That’s my outlook.

We know much of what we see is manipulated or staged, which is increasing our levels of distrust, yet we are falling for the fake stuff and allowing it to diminish our appreciation of what we have, how we look, and who we are. Little in life looks or sounds nearly as good as someone else’s because real life rarely stacks up against the images of those who want us to believe this is what their life really looks like.

Steve Furtick reminds us, “The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”

The notion that “everybody wants to be us” seems to be true for those wishing they were the ones living the life they’re promoting. Sadly, it is leaving many feeling pessimistic and unhappy because they don’t have the right friends, the right house, the right job or the right body in comparison with those who seem to have all of the above.

But it might not be too hard to find a new formula. It doesn’t require abandoning interest in others, but rather bringing a bit more balance to our perspective.

By Laura Kish Recently The Carlyle Observer sent out a request to local students and groups about designing ads for participating local businesses – a project we named “Kidvertising.”

In Kipling, Mrs. RoyHampton’s Grade 9 art students gladly took part to show off their talents in drawing.

In Carlyle, program coordinator Carli Wollbaum was contacted to have youngsters from the Cornerstone Family and Youth Centre, a non-profit barrier free program for families, located in Carlyle, design ads for the participating businesses.

“The kids were eager to showcase their creativity,” said Wollbaum. “They were proud to be a part the community and they’re all looking forward to seeing their artwork in the paper.”

Oilfield well cleanup program nears end of first year The Government of Saskatchewan says the province’s Accelerated Site Closure Program (ASCP) has seen a strong uptake and success during its first year.

The ASCP provides funding to Saskatchewan-based oil and gas service companies to conduct abandonment and reclamation work of inactive oil and gas well sites across the province.

Launched in May 2020, the ASCP will provide up to $400 million in federal government funding over two years through the COVID-19 Economic Response Plan.

"This program has helped to create and maintain oil and gas service sector jobs and sustain the overall health of Saskatchewan's energy sector during a very challenging time," Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said.

"The ASCP, which builds on the work that Saskatchewan was already doing in

this area, is a major economic stimulus program that is also good for the environment."

"Working with Minister Eyre and the Government of Saskatchewan, this program kept workers on the job this past year during the pandemic," federal Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O'Regan Jr. said.

"We're cleaning up our environment, and supporting the hardworking men and women in our oil and gas sector – including in First Nations and Métis communities."

As of April 30, $184 million in contracts has been issued to companies to engage Saskatchewan-based service workers in site closure work. More than $61 million has been paid for work already completed under the program, including 1,385 well abandonments and decommissions, 237 flowline abandonments, 13 facilities, and 2,545 site remediation and reclama-

tion activities.

Regionally, the funding disbursed in work package contracts in oil and gas producing regions of the province includes $59.5 million for the Estevan area, $36.7 million in the Swift Current region, $27.8 million for the Kindersley area and $60.5 million in the Lloydminster area.

“The Government of Saskatchewan worked constructively with industry and stakeholders to design and deliver the Accelerated Site Closure Program, which created jobs and reduced liabilities in the province,” said Bill Peterson, Canadian Natural Resources Limited’s senior vice-president of development operations.

“By working together with industry, companies were able to effectively and efficiently do regional abandonment and reclamation programs generating jobs through local service provid-

ers.”

The ASCP, which is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Resources and delivered in partnership with the Saskatchewan Research Council, was developed to support Saskatchewan oil and gas sector workers.

The provincial government said the ASCP has been wellreceived by both oil and gas companies and the service sector as well-timed, efficient and administratively simple.

"We have been very impressed with the level of efficiency that the Government of Saskatchewan has built into the management of the program," said Connie Shevkenek, Cardinal Energy’s vice-president of engineering.

"Through the initial phases, Cardinal's allocated funding has enabled both the ongoing abandonment and reclamation of inactive well sites, as well as supported the local oil and gas service industry in our operating areas."

Golfer of the Week – Ian Kelln

By Jessica R. Ryan “It’s always a challenge, and the sociability of the people you’re with,” says Ian Kelln, when asked what his favourite aspect of golf is.

Kelln has been golfing for the past 40 years of his life; 25 of those years have been spent golfing at White Bear, where he now plays almost exclusively.

As the lives of most in the world have been upturned, and seemingly everything has seen changes to its practices due to COVID-19, golfing has seemed to stay relatively the same.

“Well, it was the most normal part of my life.” says Kelln.

Kelln was able to play 85 rounds

last year. While there were a few notable changes in practice during tee times and when it came to players retrieving their balls, golf was business as usual for the most part.

While Kelln has been a long-time player of the sport due to personal interest, it’s been the people that he has played with and the people who he has met over the years that have made it worthwhile.

“I should give special thanks to a fellow named Larry Palmer who is the greens superintendent who does a wonderful job of keeping the course in very good condition.” says Kelln.

“The general manager is very welcoming and supportive of the golf members. He is always there to greet you with

a smile and engage you in conversation.”

Kelln says that he is a regular at the White Bear Golf Course for not only the quality of the greens and friendliness of the staff, but also for convenience. Kelln owns a cottage in White Bear that is located approximately three or so minutes from the course.

While the golf course at White Bear is his most frequented course, Kelln also recognizes and enjoys other courses in the area.

“Another thing I’d say is that we’re very blessed down in our area. Kenosee has a very nice golf course as well and Carlyle has a nice nine-hole golf course so there’s nice golfing options in the area”

Let the games begin: Moose Mountain Soccer moving forward despite COVID-19 challenges

By Kaitlyn Meisner With the return to outdoor sports this year, Moose Mountain Soccer has been adjusting to the new restrictions and trying to make the most out of this season.

They have been hosting weekly practices and are also planning to play games before this sea-

son is over. However, it has been a challenging season for the club, as plenty of new changes have emerged due to COVID-19.

The length of the soccer season was shortened by several weeks. Usually, the season runs for about eight weeks, but because the Moose Mountain Soccer Club board did not ex-

There was also a drop in numbers — with the total number of registered kids being 53 for this season—and changes to the way that practices were co-ordinated. They could no longer have parents on the field, and the kids had to physically distance themselves and stay within their cohorts/teams.

However, despite the low numbers, shortened season, and COVID policies, the club remains positive.

“It’s been an adventure. We’ve got a new board…the kids seem to be having fun, [and we have] lots of new kids this year who have never played soccer,” said Krista Dolphin, the vice-president of the Moose Mountain Soccer board.

Dolphin explained that not only are there new kids and a new board, but kids from several different communities, including ones from Kisbey, Manor, Arcola, Carlyle, and White Bear.

Both board members felt that this year was a learning period, where players, parents and coaches showed re-

silience and adaptability.

Kirkness observed: “Overall, we’re just really grateful that we were able to run a season this year. It wouldn’t have been possible last year… and we’re excited about next year.”

As business capacities are also cut, businesses like Rutten’s have been forced to lay off staff members as a result.

“We have been very thankful for the locals, they have been supporting us very well through take-out.” says Rutten.

It seems that the decrease in taxes for individuals and business

owners comes at the most ideal of times. As society and the economy begins its journey to recovery after this dark period that has been experienced, this tax decrease shines a bit of light.

Just as this decrease has helped Rutten, it is sure to help others within the community in getting their feet back solidly underneath them. At the very least, it will give them the strength needed to overcome hurdles that still remain.

Whether you're interested in animal rescue or just enjoy watching cute pets run around, this will be a show for everyone.

The show is a fundraiser organized by Angie Werner-Paterson, who runs A+ Animal Rescue out of Wawota.

She says she just started last spring, becoming a not-for-profit organization, and is working on their charity status.

“The pet talent show is a way to raise funds for A+ Animal Rescue,” says Werner-Paterson.

“Whenever we do a fundraiser we talk a lot about the importance of spaying and neutering

your pets.”

“Right now we have 23 kittens in care,” explains Werner-Paterson.

“We've lost quite a few kittens this year due to sickness from overpopulation. We've dealt with a lot of kitten fleas which is not normal.”

There are a few reasons why Werner-Paterson decided to start up this organization.

“I got a kitten in 2018 and he got ran over because he escaped outside,” explains Werner.

“I had seen so many run over on the highway but no one ever claimed them. I started fostering for another company out of Virden.”

Werner goes to explain: “We didn't have any help for the strays in town and surrounding area.”

So she decided to start a rescue herself.

It's been a lot of work on her part but she does have dedicated volunteers which is very helpful.

“I'm still trying to

find more foster homes,” says Werner-Paterson. “I get really overwhelmed with the intake of cats and kittens until I find foster homes for them.”

Donations as little as $5 can go a long ways in helping with the vet supplies, vet checks, spay and neuters, and so on.

"Every dollar helps," says Werner-Paterson.

Things are finally beginning to look like summer.

June 1 came with wonderful sunshine and warm temperatures and not so much cool wind.

There is more activities

out around the building and both sides of Clifford Wilson’s unit. He and his daughter Cathy and also Fred Krukoff have planted a garden area filled with perennials and flowers and tubs of tomato plants. It will be entertaining to watch it grow.

Inside the courtyard, June Thompson and volunteer Valerie Van Dresar are filling the area with bedding plants; another thing for us to watch grow and enjoy.

A few more new faces as our visitors come and go. Till next week, take care.

Phone calls and email from friends, an unexpected visit and beautiful card from new neighbours offering help should we need it and a gift of tomato plants for our garden are just a few things.

We’re not forgotten so let’s seek daily to bless someone else.

The Student Leadership Team continues to encourage school spirit with cohort challenges.

Last week was another paper airplane contest (shared in classrooms live on Microsoft Teams) and Jersey Day. The cohort that is currently in the lead is Grade 7/8 Group 3. The winning cohort will receive a victory lunch made by sandwich artists!

A new reporting system is being used this year, EDSBY. Its purpose is to improve electronic communication between school and home. When your child is unable to attend for any reason, please call or email the office or put in an absence through the Edsby app.

In my annual “reading through the Bible in a year,” I’ve been slogging through some tough chapters.

In fact, those pages of “so and so begat so and so,” have often caused me to wonder how much spiritual value there is for folks like me. Having said that, an accurate record of leaders, good and bad, attests to the completeness of God’s Word; He doesn’t condone evil but nor does He ignore it.

Bear Claw Casino set to open again on June 20

By Laura Kish The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority has announced that all seven of its casino properties are set to open to the public on June 20, including the Bear Claw Casino at the White Bear First Nations.

Bear Claw will open on Sunday, June 20 at 10 a.m. The operating hours for Bear Claw Casino & Hotel will be 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

"We're absolutely looking forward to opening back up again," comments Chief Nathan Pasap.

“Everyone wants to get back to work…..people have to pay bills.”

Pasap explains that the casino staff are already getting things prepared, getting things restocked and are ready to open.

“People are going to be flocking back to the casinos again,” says Pasap.

Customers will still be expected to follow the social distancing rules.

“We are still taking the proper precautions,” explains Pasap. “We're at a place where I feel safe to lift some of the restrictions now that most have

“We're all waiting to get back to some normalcy,” says Pasap. “Back to working a full schedule for the staff and having some security in their life.”

“It's been quite the journey for everyone! But we're looking at moving forward,” says Pasap.

All casinos will open at 10 a.m. on June 20, with the exception of the Gold Horse Casino in Lloydminster, which will open at 11 a.m.

During the initial phase of opening, SIGA will start up in a reduced capacity with a 150- per-

son maximum, while maintaining the physical distancing requirements to ensure adherence to the public health guidelines.

SIGA casinos will offer select gaming and food service, and will enhance services as more restrictions are lifted.

We’ve worked very hard to ensure our facilities are safe for all to enjoy,” said Zane Hansen, SIGA’s president and CEO. “I’m very excited for our team members to return to what they do best – providing the best entertainment experience possible for our guests, even if that experience now looks a bit different.”

SIGA operates in a highly regulated industry and even prior to the pandemic the organization’s cleaning and safety protocols were of the highest standards,

Hansen said.

The authority implemented an enhanced health and safety program last summer with increased frequency of cleaning and sanitation throughout its properties, while managing physical distancing practices. SIGA will also continue with its contact tracing process.

Guests are required to check in prior to entering the casino.

This can be done with a guest’s Players Club card or by simply providing a name and contact number. All visitors will undergo a simple

screening process prior to entering the casino.

SIGA’s full Health and Safety Plan and frequently asked questions are available at SIGA.ca, which includes all operational changes guests should expect and details regarding its entry screening process. SIGA regularly reviews data and research of industry best practices, safety standards and public health guidelines, and will continue to refine its Health and Safety Plan based on evolving advice from medical health experts and the province.

A walk in White Bear in honour of the children

The walk was organized by Tanya Littlechief, Dorothy Joyea, and Kem Joyea. Littlechief explained that she was approached by Dorothy and Kem Joyea, who are elders in

the White Bear community, about doing something in memory of the children. They quickly organized a prayer walk that would include smudging, and end in a feast within the arbour at the Powwow Grounds. The walk started at Sam’s Gas and Grocery and lasted about an hour.

Those who participated in the walk were encouraged to wear their orange shirts, and members from the White Bear First Nations community wore their ribbon skirts to show support as well.

Besides this, many oth-

ers carried signs with them during the walk.

There were also those who paid tribute to the children by running. Shanelle Littlechief and Savannah Standingready ran ahead of the prayer walk, in spite of the warm weather, with an orange flag. They ran to represent the children, and to honor those who could never run themselves.

In the end, there was an overwhelming turnout, with approximately 100 people who came to show their support.

explained what they wanted people to take from their prayer walk.

She emphasized that she’d like to see children in schools taught about the history of what her people went through—history that has been neglected.

However, in general, she stated that their hope is to spread awareness to everyone.

“We don’t want anybody to feel bad and we know a lot do.

What we want is an awareness for people to start understanding the history of what our people went through and the people before

us went through.”

She explained that she hopes this walk and the awareness of First Nations history will cause people to have more compassion and understanding for the survivors who are still dealing with the trauma of their experiences in residential schools.

She further stated, “Seeing what they saw on the news [about the 215 children whose remains were found] really impacted them… there’s still a lot more healing to do.”

Tanya Littlechief also expressed her appreciation for the sur-

vivors and the way that they’ve told their stories. They have helped the community to move forward despite everything.

“They’re strong ones. They’re resilient…they’ve come a long way to make sure that we’re able to raise our kids the way our ancestors did a long time ago…Things are going to get better.

And with working with the other surrounding communities, and them acknowledging the fact that this really happened, I think we’ll have a better relationship with one another.”

Pause for Reflections: Becoming like God

“Please identify yourself,” the officer said.

Murphy looked in the mirror and replied, “Yes, officer. It’s definitely me!”

“God created us in His image, and ever since we’ve been returning the favour by creating Him in our image” (Voltaire). This may sound almost irreverent, but we can relate to something in God’s identity.

“God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’

And God said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel, I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14). Reflecting on this passage Kevin De Young posed the questions: Who is God? What is His name?

These are the very questions that Moses wanted answered. “What shall I

say to them when they ask Who is God? What is his name?” God answered, “‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”

The translation of I Am here is in the imperfect tense and creates some flexibility. It could mean “I am,” “I was” or “I will be.” Thus, the people would understand Moses as saying that this is their God who was with them in the past, is with them now and will be with them in the future.

I am reminded of the joke where Moses protests his call by the Lord and says, “The people will not listen to me. I am not a great and powerful force.” God replies, “But I am.”

The bible begins with, “God created the heavens and the earth.” And “God’s

Spirit hovered over the waters,” meaning there was a time when matter did not exist. There was never a time when God did not exist. And that God is with us, as he was with Moses and the Israelites.

In The God Who is There, Francis Schaeffer describes this God who is with us. “I am who I am: ‘I am the God who sees and hears, who knows and remembers, who cares and loves. I am the God who has a plan.”

To make our part in this plan of God more exciting and to give us more enthusiasm to follow this God who is, who was and who will be, let me share a little Hebrew grammar. There is “yada,” which means “to know” – like “yadayada-yada.”

Then there is the verbal root “hayah” which means “to be” – think of it as “hi-ya!” like when you are doing ka-

rate chops. You are alive! You exist! Now we have a battle cry to execute our plans.

Now how do we act or become like Jesus in God’s plan? At the last supper God gave us this directive: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This can be applied simply to our daily lives.

A hungry mother was observed slowly eating her brunch one-handed so that she could gently rock her baby back to sleep. Parents are full of such sacrifices. This comes as naturally as interrupted sleep, changing financial priorities or welcoming an unexpected child.

St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine, prayed constantly for her son’s conversion. A bishop of the Church told her, “It cannot be that the son of these tears should be lost.”

Now that a new month is upon us, there are many who are or will be making their summer weekend home at their campers which are in the Moose Creek Regional Park. There’s probably some parked at other parks in the area too that I don’t know about. That is a definite sure sign that summer is here.

Hopefully we’ll see some rain again soon. It is surprising how quickly that nice rain received at the end of May has now dried up and more moisture will soon be needed to keep everything growing as I noticed that some of the small seeds are now beginning to

sprout. The rain showers do keep the green grass growing which will probably need mowing again soon, always something to do outside.

GoFundMe campaign for cancer fight

By Laura Kish A GoFundMe page was started recently for Tammy Hooker of Kipling, who has recently been diagnosed with cancer.

Tammy is well known within the community as she has worked at various business over the past several years.

She received the unfortunate news at the beginning of May and will require immediate surgery depending on what her doctors determine as the source.

"Tammy will not be able to work and support herself for some time and we are hoping through this fund raiser we can provide some relief," say the organizers of the page.

She will require the funds to assist with travel expenses, and her

As of Wednesday morning, $1,700 had been raised towards the goal of $5,000.

Wawota news – a new business Submitted by Myrna Olson Congratulations to Shana Puskas who opened the former Esso Café on June 1. This gives everyone another choice for eating out.

In the 1970s, Bill and Marie Jensen took over managing the Café and the garage. Marie added homemade soups and many special desserts to the menu. The Esso was a busy place with many crews working here and the garage open until 10 p.m. Val Puskas remembers working with her mother after school and on her trips home. Now the third generation of this family is managing the Café at the Esso.

Sympathy to the family of May (Christopher, Filafka) Hambleton who passed away at Deer View Lodge on May 23.

She was 96 years

old and leaves her son, Randy and his family of Randine, Dichelle and Adrienne and their families and a brother, Don Christopher. A private graveside service was held on May 28.

Word has been received of the passing of Doris (Christopher, Tamko) Coons of Moose Jaw. She passed away on April 29 at the age of 88 years.

She leaves six children, 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A private funeral was held on May 3.

Congratulations to Ransel Barnachea on her graduation on May 28. She graduated with a continuing care assistant after taking an eight-month course from SE College’s Whitewood Campus.

Ceres Global Ag. excited by Northgate potential The Ceres Global Ag Corp. Northgate Terminal is about to get a big addition.

Ceres announced plans on May 25 to build a $350 million integrated canola processing facility at its Northgate terminal to help meet the current and growing global demand for canola products.

The state of the art facility will have annual capacity to process 1.1 million metric tonnes of canola and refine over 500,000 metric tonnes of canola oil, for both food and fuel.

Robert Day, the president and CEO of Ceres Global Ag., said there is a lot of canola in the southeast region, and an opportunity exists to increase canola acreage around the Northgate location on

both sides of the border.

There also isn’t a canola crush plant in the immediate area.

“Because we’re connected directly to the BNSF Railroad, we have more cost-competitive access to U.S. destinations, where we believe the majority of the demand is coming from today and in the future, and so Northgate makes an excellent destination,” said Day. Also a factor is the success of their existing terminal at Northgate, which has been operating for six years and is a shipping hub for agriculture and crude oil products, among others.

Ceres started with a transloader at Northgate, and added a high-speed elevator and a fertilizer warehouse.

canola merchandising activity has allowed us to establish strong relationships with the grower community, and really increase our confidence in our ability to pull off a project like this,” said Day. Some work for the crush plant is already underway. Ceres has been drilling for water on the site, and they are going through all of the environmental permitting.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2022, and the facility is expected to be operational in 2024.

More than 50 fulltime jobs are expected to be created once the canola crush plant is open.

Ceres will leverage the existing infrastructure at Northgate to build this plant. It will require increased capacity at the grain and canola receiving elevator.

“We’ll make some adjustments, so that we can continue the business that we’ve been running, but then also add this canola crush component to it,” said Day. Ceres owns a soybean crush facility in

southern Manitoba, and Day said the executive team at Ceres has a lot of canola crush experience with Day, along with the company’s head of business development, head of operations, commercial director and chief financial officer. But this is the first time the company has constructed and operated a crush facility.

“We are working with outside consultants and vendors that have built canola crush plants in the past, and have years and years of experience in doing that. We are making sure from the beginning to be working with experts in all levels of this project to ensure that from the construction, all the way to the commissioning and running and operating the business, that we do this as seamlessly as anyone in the industry would.”

Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig was among those who quickly welcomed the announced project.

“The ongoing partnership with Ceres has been great for the community of Estevan and surrounding rural municipalities. As Estevan’s

canola crush facility, we are excited that Northgate will support families for years to come with added jobs and grain delivered to a premium market.”

Day noted Ceres consulted with the Estevan Economic Development committee on this project, and Ceres has been working with the different levels of governmentas well.

“Adding value to agriculture products right here in Saskatchewan will help us reach the goals set out in our Growth Plan,” said Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. “We welcome Ceres Global’s investment in Northgate to support and provide southeast Saskatchewan growers with a unique and valuable option for marketing their canola.

With its direct connection to the BNSF railroad, Ceres can offer Saskatchewan growers access to a variety of markets in the United States.”

This is the latest announcement for a canola crush facility in Saskatchewan this year. Viterra says it intends to build the world’s largest canola crush facility in Regina,

while Cargill announced it is also building a plant in Regina.

Richardson previously unveilled plans to double the capacity of its plant in Yorkton.

Day said there is interest in Saskatchewan because of the increased demand for renewable diesel in North America.

“There have been a number of projects announced where capacity is going to be coming online. The feed stack to produce renewable diesel is going to need to be vegetable oil for the most part, and so the market is looking to areas where there’s an opportunity to build a crush plant, where there’s enough production of an oil seed, where they can fill a plant to capacity.”

Renewable diesel development is transformational for agriculture in North America, and Day predicted it will be as significant as ethanol.

Saskatchewan is an area where there is more canola than crush, and Day expects there might be further announcements for companies in Saskatchewan.
