Cannington Manor is open for the summer

If you ever want to take a trip back into the past, Cannington Manor Provincial Park is the place to go.

The historic site, which continues to be a great highlight for locals and tourists who want a hands-on learning experience about the history of the area, is back open this year after having to close last summer due to COVID-19.

It will be operating a little differently, as masks are required in the buildings and other basic regulations are in place. It is also recommended that visitors book their tours online because there is a limited capacity. It will be open to visitors every week from ThursdayMonday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The village of Cannington Manor was a settlement started in 1882 by Captain Edward Pierce, who wished to start a Victorian-style village in the Prairies. The town became a supplier for southeast Saskatchewan but was eventually

abandoned after about twenty years due to various struggles and changes that were taking place such as the arrival of railroads.

Cannington Manor Provincial Park is a hidden gem of Saskatchewan, as it aims to recreate the world in which the villagers would have lived. There are several buildings, which represent what their homes would have looked like, and the park is home to many historical artifacts from the village’s times.

Additionally, there are costumed guides who direct the tours at Cannington Manor and tell the tales and history of the village.

Allison Magy, the Historic and Cultural Resource Specialist with Saskatchewan Parks, explained this experience is what makes Cannington Manor so special.

“I think some of the highlights are getting to really feel like you do get to step back in time. The interpreters are all in period costume and it really puts you back and helps

We also have a variety of handson activities for people to enjoy whether it’s learning how to play croquet or making rope … and it’s a beautiful place not too far off the beaten path for an afternoon picnic or to walk along,” Magy said.

Cannington Manor is indeed beautiful, and at this time of year, visitors may even get a glimpse of the Yellow Lady’s Slipper Orchid there.

The Park also includes the Humphrey/ Hewlett House, which is from the 19th century and is only a short drive from the rest of the park.

Magy added that there will be a couple of “Cannington by Candlelight” tours, which take place in the evening and where “a visitor gets to step back into time with a guide … and hear stories from Cannington Manor’s history that are best told after dark.”

Dog Guides help disabled get a new leash on life

By Laura Kish From guiding their handlers through their daily lives to getting help when it’s needed most, Dog Guides play a crucial role in the lives of Canadians with disabilities.

The mission of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is to empower Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing dog guides at no cost to them and supporting each pair in their journey together.

The Kipling and District Lions Club recently held their local Walk for Dog Guides organized by Lions member Laurie Dube.

“I was a little overwhelmed, but I had lots of help from members who were involved with this walk before,” Laurie Dube said about her first time organizing this event.

It was a beautiful evening for the 3 1/2 kilometre

walk around town for the nine people and three dogs participating.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is a national charity. Founded in 1983 by Lions clubs from across Canada, its first program, Canine Vision, trained and matched dog guides with Canadians who were blind or visually impaired. The foundation has since built its capacity to include seven programs to meet diverse needs.

The list of programs includes Canine Vision Dog Guides for people who are blind or visually impaired, Hearing Dog Guides for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Service Dog Guides for people who have a physical or medical disability, Seizure Response Dog Guides for people who have epilepsy, Autism Assistance Dog Guides for children who have autism spectrum disorder, Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people who have diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness, and Facility

Support Dogs for professional agencies assisting individuals in traumatic situations.

Each program trains dog guides to meet the different needs of people with various disabilities. Breeds commonly used are Labrador Retrievers, Standard Poodles (for people who are allergic to dogs) and Golden Retrievers.

“One hundred per cent of the money raised, which was $2,355, goes towards the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides,” explained Dube.

All dog guides are provided to qualified applicants at no cost. The cost of training and accommodation at the school is also covered by the fund.

It costs approximately $25,000 to provide each Dog Guide.

Dawn Manns, Kipling Lions secretary said that they “have some new ideas for next year’s walk.”

Carlyle RCMP officer charged with assault with a weapon A Carlyle RCMP officer has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon – namely oleoresin capsicum [OC] spray – under section 267(a) of the Criminal Code, stemming from an investigation into a complaint.

On Oct. 31, 2020, officers from the Carlyle RCMP detachment stopped a vehicle in Arcola to conduct an Alcohol and Gaming

Regulations Act investigation. One of the occupants of the vehicle, an adult male, was arrested by Const. Dani Zaya during the course of the investigation.

During interactions with the adult male, Zaya allegedly utilized OC spray, also known as pepper spray.

A complaint was made to Carlyle RCMP in relation to this incident on Nov. 18, 2020.

An investigation was started by the RCMP South District Management Team that day and a statutory investigation was requested by the RCMP South District two days later.

The investigation was completed on Feb. 12 and after consultation with Crown prosecution, Zaya was charged and arrested on June 23, and released on conditions. He will

appear in Carlyle Provincial Court on July 14 at 10 a.m.

“Contraventions to the RCMP Code of Conduct are taken seriously,” the RCMP said in a news release.

Zaya has been suspended with pay since the investigation began.

He was on administrative duties until Jan. 20, at which time he ceased working. He remains suspended with pay.

ing officer. “The Saskatchewan RCMP has previously committed that if RCMP officers are criminally charged, we will be transparent and notify the public.

This is one such example.”

As this matter is now before the courts, the RCMP is unable to provide further detail about the incident that occurred in October 2020.

Artist’s Colony returns to Moose Mountain park

By Emily Kaltt One of Moose Mountain Provincial Park’s most unique and beloved attractions has returned as the Artist’s Colony opens for the 2021 tourist season.

The colony describes itself as “an inspiring and peaceful

setting for creating, displaying and selling original works of art.” The colony itself is a small group of stone cabins located on the shores of Kenosee Lake, near the chalet and visitor’s centre in the park. Artists from around the world come to the colony to work on their art in the

park’s beautiful setting.

The colony, which is typically open from May to September each year, did not open last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Improved circumstances this year have allowed the artists to return to their cabins and for visitors to return.

“It’s fantastic to be back because a lot of artists work in solitude most of the time … it’s the interaction with the public that that we kind of missed, because … you meet people from all over the world here,” said Wawota-based bronze sculptor Ken Frederickson.

Frederickson is one of two permanent artists in residence along with painter Margaret Delaney. A third cabin houses a visiting artist that rotates on a weekly basis.

Frederickson has been coming to the Artist’s Colony cabins for five years. He believes the colony is a huge asset to the park.

“It’s nice because it gives people in the park something to do that don’t necessarily golf or boat … it’s an added attraction for the park,” Frederickson said. “It’s really becoming known as the park of Saskatchewan where the arts are and that’s been fantastic.”

Margaret Delaney has been an artist in residence at the cabins for over 10 years.

She has returned to her work as a painter after contracting COVID-19 herself earlier this year.

“It feels absolutely wonderful (to be back), Delaney said. “I personally had COVID and … just let me say it motivates me to be better.

Manor Fun Daze set to take place late July

Manor Fun Daze, a summer tradition, which takes place in the village of Manor every year, will be happening again this July.

The event, which is a highlight for many in the community of Manor and surrounding communities, has been going on for many years. This one would have been the 42nd if last year’s event hadn’t been cancelled because of COVID-19 restrictions. As it is, the 41st Manor Fun Daze are set to happen on July 24.

The event will include community co-ordinated activities, which will start in the morning and continue into the evening.

The day will start with a parade, run by the local fire department.

Later, the Manor Fire Department will also be serving hotdogs and hamburgers for lunch at the station.

In the evening, the fun will continue with the Professional Bull Riders rodeo, which has been the major highlight of Manor Fun Daze since 2007. The rodeo will start at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be a barbeque beef and pork supper served at the rodeo grounds at 4:30 p.m. and beer gardens will open from 4 p.m. onwards.

Rylan Weir, one of the organizers of Manor Fun Daze, explained that this year’s events are mostly different since the community has pulled together to have the event despite challenges due to COVID-19. Usually, Manor Fun Daze takes about six months to plan,

but volunteers and businesses have helped to plan it in about a month and a half instead.

The community and those who get to enjoy and benefit from the Fun Daze make this event so important. Weir said he hopes people will come out and show their support.

The proceeds from the event will be sown back into the community and organizations within Manor.

Weir added that the best part for him is seeing the community come together and have fun.

“I like how the people in the community and the surrounding communities all get together, come out to support, visit have a good time, and (it) gives the people around here something to do,” said Weir.

And yeah, to see and say, oh, we’re so happy you’re open again. And this is the most wonderful place for an artist to be. You couldn’t find a better place.”

Visitors are now allowed to visit the Artist’s Colony cabins while following current provincial COVID-19 safety orders, including physical distancing and wearing masks inside cabins.

The Artist’s Colony at Moose Mountain Provincial Park is open from Victoria Day until Labour Day. Artists can usually be found working most weekends, but schedules vary by artist.

Residential schools shake Canada’s pride

By Murray Mandryk It’s been hard to celebrate our past in the way we once did.

There was a time when we could be comforted by whatever we were taught in our school history books.

Modern times are changing that.

Those who once had no say in what was written about their ancestors are now getting their say. And new technologies are backing up their stories.

This is the reality after the “discovery” of Indian residential school gravesites, like the one at the Cowessess First Nation.

Ground-penetrating radar is confirming the stories First Nations people and many others have long known about. And it’s making many very uncomfortable. For many, it made for a very different Canada Day — a day in which we are supposed to revel in our history.

Canada Day celebrations that were already enduring the pallor of COVID-19 restrictions were cancelled in places like Melville, Meadow Lake and La Ronge.

Cowessess First Nation chief Cadmus Delorme actually did his best to keep the findings in factual perspective.

Delorme, during his online press conference that drew the attention from reporters around the world, repeatedly stressed this was a gravesite and not a “mass grave.” He further noted that the ground-penetrating radar has a margin of error of 10 to 15 per cent, so the he estimated the numbers to be in excess of 600 rather than the 751 graves most often stated.

He also noted some of the interned may be adults — perhaps buried prior to the opening of the Marieval Indian School in 1899 or during its existence that lasted until 1997.

And he factually stated that there were once grave markers at the site, but they that were removed by officials of the Catholic Church in the 1960s.

Yes, it’s possible that the graves are not all children and that many children died of things like the Spanish flu or tuberculosis rather than more violent means. Maybe the grave markers were removed from the church and never replaced for less-than-nefarious reasons. But the reality is, no on one should expect their child to die at school, have them buried there and never be told about it. If a single died at school today, it would be the biggest story of the day.

Thousands of these children died at residential schools over their existence — likely, far more than even the Truth and Reconciliation Commission estimated.

It is a fact that these children were taken from their families under the threat of arrest or cutting off food rations. And even if some First Nations families (especially in later years when the schools became less harsh) did voluntarily send their children there, it is a fact that children were treated poorly — often, brutally.

It’s undeniable that the schools’ long-standing purpose was to remove First Nations children from their language, culture and religion.

In a poignant moment, Premier Scott Moe said last week this is our history that we also need to reflect upon on Canada Day. But Delorme likely put it best: “We all inherited this. Nobody today created residential schools. Nobody today created the Indian Act. Nobody today created the ‘60s Scoop. We all inherited it and we have to acknowledge that people are healing and people are hurting. Let’s do something about it.”

Maybe being Canadian is this pursuit of understanding who we are so we can be better. It doesn’t sound lofty, but it’s so Canadian.

Too good to pass up

Shelley Luedtke It just looked and smelled so good. Pink, billowy, fluffy cotton candy. As it was being freshly spun in the huge tub, I couldn’t stop my mouth from watering. I tried to talk myself out of buying it because I find it difficult to eat.

My fingers and face get so sticky that after a few bites I’m left with sugary residue all over everything.

Some of our more delicious foods are just downright messy to eat; buttered corn on the cob, watermelon, ribs, peaches, filled pastries and so on. No matter how hard we might try, it seems inevitable that butter, juice, sauce or jelly will run down our face and fingers and cause a sticky, yet quite delicious, mess.

I don’t attempt anything wrapped in a tortilla anymore. I cut it into pieces before I even start because I know that’s where I am

clean, if that’s not the case. Getting real more quickly is better in the long run. Besides, wouldn’t we rather be with the person having too much fun, anyway?

We are in the months when we eat more of these ooey, gooey, drizzly, drippy meals and treats than at any other time. There’s just something about good food, sunshine and outdoor eating that makes these delicious messes just so good.

But I wonder what will make things taste the best—the fact that it is summer at its food gooiest or that we will once again be sitting around picnic tables and fire pits with the people that bring such flavor to our lives.

Think back on the past months for just a moment. What did you miss most? Your grandparent’s comfy furniture? Your friend’s high-end kitchen finishes? Not likely. We missed them—the people we love. So let’s cherish being able to get back to people who won’t care if we have sugar caked around our lips or sauce dripping down our fingers. It’s all the more delicious when we can simply be with the people who want nothing more than to be with us. That’s my outlook.

I loved that. Too much fun to complain about being sticky.

Too much fun to stop what she was doing.

There is a lengthy list of foods people are cautioned to avoid on first dates. Tacos, pizza, wings, spaghetti, shellfish and burgers are said to be the most troublesome because they are hard to eat delicately and you won’t look good in front of someone you are trying to impress. My thought? If you’re a rib eater, let your date see you eat ribs. Why pretend?

It’s like the comedian who was giving relationships a reality check and advised, “Don’t even think about getting married until you’ve seen each other battle at least one bad flu.” Don’t give the impression the only food you eat is what will keep you immaculately

going to end up. As for burgers, well, knowing the inevitable outcome doesn’t stop me from adding toppings I know will squeeze out the sides of the bun on first bite and end up all over my mouth or plopping on the plate in front of me.

Ah … those wonderful foods associated with summer that squirt, splatter or spray all over. Our tongues might fight valiantly to catch the drips and streams of gooey goodness, but more often than not those dribbles end up on our cheeks and chin, or the back of our hand as we wipe away the errant mess.

Our youngest daughter was about eight years old when we were at a theme park sitting on the sidewalk just prior to a parade.

While we waited, we got ice cream treats which had to be eaten quickly because they were melting pretty fast. After the parade we stood up to make our way to another area of the park when we saw the state of our eight-yearold. Her t-shirt and hands, shorts and legs were covered in melted ice cream. She was one sticky mess.

Summer programming “game on” at Carlyle’s library

By Emily Klatt After more than a year of reduced activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, summer programming has returned to the Carlyle Public Library.

Starting July 8, the Carlyle Public Library will begin offering both virtual and in-person programming for children of all ages. Each Thursday throughout the summer will feature interactive and enriching literacy activities.

The first two weeks

of programming will include the alreadypopular take-and-make literacy craft kits and online videos through the library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

In-person programs are slated to resume following the lifting of provincial COVID-19 health restrictions on July 11.

The first in-person programs will be held on July 15.

Librarian Jennifer Sedor said that in the beginning, pre-regis-

tration will be required for in-person programming.

“I think the first few classes we will do preregistrations, just to get an idea of numbers (and) so we don't have too many people all at once out of the gate,” Sedor said. “We are kind of out of practice (of) running programming so it'll give us an idea of how to prepare and what kind of numbers we can expect.”

New reporter excited to join the Observer My name is Emily Klatt. I was born and raised in Carlyle, but for the past few years I’ve been living in Saskatoon, attending the University of Saskatchewan. I have completed the course work for my undergraduate degree in English.

I started working in journalism at the U of S student newspaper, the Sheaf. From there I moved on to spend time working at CBC Saskatchewan and most recently, the Brandon Sun newspaper where I covered the COVID-19 pandemic.

My very first job in the newspaper industry was stuffing flyers at the Observer and so it’s fitting that my life has led me back here, but this time as a journalist.

The theme of this year’s TD Summer Reading Club is Game On and focuses on getting kids engaged in all kinds of play.

“It's all about board games, learning how to play outside, team activities, or any kind of game,” Sedor said.

The Summer Reading Club also features reading passports that allow kids and parents to track how many books they read — or have read to them — over the summer. A sticker is given for each book read and once kids fill their passport they can bring it back to the library to redeem for a prize. Children can complete as many passports as they like and all passports will be entered into a draw for a very special prize at the end of the summer.

“Throughout the summer we are going to have pop up libraries heading out to the pool, to the park, to the splash park,” Sedor said. “Our summer program co-ordinator ... will be out there with some games and she'll be out there with some prizes and some crafts to grab and go on site.”

Sedor is excited to welcome patrons back to the Carlyle Public Library after many months of COVID-19 restrictions, especially since the library underwent renovations ear-

lier this year.

“We want people to come hang out at the library ... since we put in the new seating area and the new computer area, we haven't had people (in) and really enjoy it,” Sedor said.

“I'm really excited to have the coffee pot and have people come in and visit, bring their kids, hang out and use this as a gathering place again.”

Reading passports and take-and-make kits can be picked up at the Carlyle Public Library. More information about summer programming can be found on the library’s Facebook page.

Albert DePape… you’re never too old to take up golfing

By Laura Kish When The Observer was looking for a new Golfer of Week from the Stoughton area, other golfers from the club suggested that we definitely should interview Albert DePape.

“They say you’re quite a golfer.”

“I don’t know about that,” says DePape with a little chuckle. “Well, I get out there as often as I can.

“I try to golf five times a week,” he says. “Sometimes it’s every day.”

DePape, who is 84 now, has been retired for more than a few years now, as he says.

After retiring from farming 20 years ago and moving to Stoughton, DePape needed to find something to do with his spare time.

He started golfing in his early 70’s, although he says he did golf a bit way back, about 50 years ago when there was a little bit of a golf course at White Lake north of Forget.

“I always liked the game of golf but just didn’t get into the game until recently,” DePape said.

There was no time for golf when he was farming.

One of the highlights of his golfing career happened last year during a men’s night to boot. He got his first hole-in-one at the Stoughton course on #7, which is approximately 140 metres.

“The funniest thing about it was a thunderstorm came up and the two other guys that were golfing with me were like ‘Oh, that lightning was

pretty close.’

“We didn’t finish our round!” says DePape and adds, “I didn’t make any money off of it.”

There is no particular reason for passion for golf, but the game was always dear to DePape.

“I just get a kick out of the game. I’ve always liked it,” DePape says.

“At times I’m not that great at it but it’s lots of fun!

“I use a cart all the time but there’s still a certain amount of exercise involved.”

DePape has tried out the courses at the Lakes but says that they’re a little too tough for him.

DePape is glad to help when he can with the local golf club. Due to the COVID restrictions in 2020, golfers weren’t allowed to touch or remove

the flags on the greens so he and a few others came up with an invention to fabricate ball lifters which are still being used to this day. Other improvements were also made at the Stoughton Golf Course.

“Our greens were in pretty rough shape in early spring but they’re coming around not too bad now and the fairways are in good condition.

“The fairways are also lined with lilac bushes, which are an asset to the course because they look and smell great but not so good when you’re looking for a lost ball.”

DePape says he always looks forward to men’s night for the camaraderie and the goodnatured bantering that goes on.

More than 250 anglers enter annual Alameda Fishing Derby The annual Alameda Fishing Derby proved to be a big hit, with more than 250 participants, and it was a particularly memorable day for members of one family.

The annual event was held Saturday at Grant Devine Lake. There were 203 adult entrants and 51 youth competitors. Par-

ticipants were looking for the largest northern pike in the catch and release event. The Alameda Recreation Board organized the derby.

Dean Kirby was the winner of the adult division with a fish that weighed 19.01 pounds.

Devon Carriere was second at 17.13 pounds, and

Aaron Lenius was third at 11.62 pounds. Steven Valentine (10.52 pounds), Jared Valentine (9.74 pounds) and Mike Lenius (8.84 pounds) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Carriere had a 43inch northern pike, which was the longest caught on the day. It was the second straight time Carriere had the longest fish.

Kirby’s daughter Landry was first in the junior division with a catch of 4.7 pounds, and his son Hunter Kirby was second

at 3.08 pounds. Rounding out the top six were Talia Perrot in third (1.85 pounds), Gleason Hildebrand in fourth (1.29 pounds), Sayde Laurence in fifth (1.28 pounds) and Ethen Brooks in sixth (1.19 pounds).

Competitors could bring in up to three fish to be weighed, but only the heaviest one counted.

“The number of fish was about average and there was some really nice fish caught,” said Darin McNabb with the Alameda Recreation Board.

Recreation Board, which is the umbrella organization for all of the community’s sports programs and facilities, such as the hockey and curling rinks and the ball diamonds, and any associated facilities in the community.

It was important to have the derby this year, since it was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fishing derby takes a couple of months of planning work from the organizing committee, and also requires the support of volunteers.

“Every year we seem to find the people in the right places to make it work,” said McNabb.

There was also an online silent auction as part of the derby that featured approximately 45 items.

This year marked the first time they have opted for online bidding.

“A lot of people were competitively bidding against each other, and all of them have picked up their prize and paid their bill,” said McNabb.

McNabb noted a lot of clubs have been very successful with the online auction during the past year, and the recreation board was pleased with the end result for their group.

Fans flock to the Windthorst Pirates home opener

By Laura Kish After a shortened season last year due to COVID-19, the Windthorst Pirates of the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League are back in 2021.

The Pirates won their first away game 8-2 in Regina and then lost their home opener 12-3 on Sunday afternoon.

People in the community appreciated coming out to the games once again and it was nice to not have to go far to watch a ball game.

Rhett Larsen wears many hats when it comes to the Pirates, acts as a coach, manager, captain and president, although he does credit his brother and teammate Kirk for much of the help with the team.

The team lost a few veteran players but they were fortunate enough to find recruits to add to the roster this year.

Landon Adelman from Balgonie, Alex Haus from Vibank, Bryant Gaetz from Montmartre, Carter Beattie of Kipling

and hometown boy Rhett McCarthy joined the team this season.

“It’s very rare to pick up both a pitcher and a catcher,” says Larsen, who is one of the team’s pitchers. “It couldn’t have been better … I’m getting up there in the years and my arm can only handle so much.”

Another newcomer is Grade 11 student Grady Hextall, the youngest player on the team. He’s the son of veteran player Curtis Hextall, who happens to be the oldest member of the team.

Windthorst Pirates have 14 players on the team ranging in age from 17-45.

Returning Pirates also include Dave Jones, DJ Englot, Trevor Hextall, Mark Balogh, Matt Hunter and Corey Beresh. The grounds crew is Trevor Beresh.

“I think everyone is more excited now just to get out and just be socializing again,” commented Larsen. “We had some guys reach out looking for a team to play with.”

COVID restrictions are still in place but are limited.

The traditional shaking of the hands with the opposing team following the game isn’t back yet because there is still no interaction between the two teams.

“Knock on wood, but hope COVID will soon be over,” says Larsen.

He added that the team has an overall positive attitude going into this year’s season.

“It’s always a positive attitude on the bench,” says Larsen. “Being a smaller town, it’s harder for us to recruit players but these guys just love playing baseball. And if we win the game it’s even better.”

Overall the team plays very well together but Larsen said that if there’s anything the team could improve it would be “getting more hits” and “being a little more aggressive.”

Larsen noted the team certainly appreciates the fans for coming out to the games and is grateful to everyone for all the support from both volunteers

“I’ve heard so many nice things from people, such as ‘Thanks for having the team’ and ‘Thanks for getting those games in,’” said Larsen.

“It’s going to be hard to quit the game one day,” he

added. “Some people have yoga, golfing or meditation ...

I have baseball. It’s my thing … I love baseball that much. I can’t get enough of it.

“The one thing I look forward to is getting the next generation involved in the sport.”

Carlyle baseball facing an umpire shortage

By Emily Klatt Baseball teams in the Carlyle area are struggling to find enough umpires to work at games this season.

The number of umpires around Carlyle has decreased from about 17-20 in previous years to only 10, said Alana Wilson, a former ball player and coach who has been working as an umpire for over a decade.

Wilson said the umpire shortage is partially due to the fact that no umpire training clinics were offered in 2020 or 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Retirement of older volunteers is also a contributing factor.

The shortage has led to cancelled games and current umpires working overtime to make sure

the season can go ahead as scheduled.

“It has brought us to a few games that have been cancelled,” Wilson said. “I guess our biggest saving grace this year is we don’t have (as many teams playing), not that that’s a good thing.”

Other communities in the area are facing a similar problem, Wilson said. Umpires from Carlyle are travelling farther to cover games in places like Redvers, Alameda and Estevan.

Wilson hopes to recruit and train more umpires next year to avoid another shortage during the 2022 baseball season.

“I guess my whole idea was just more to reach out for awareness.

This year, obviously, it isn’t going to help but it’s more focusing on next

year,” Wilson said.

You don’t need to play baseball or softball to become an umpire. Basic umpire certification can be earned by completing a one-day training clinic, Wilson said. Carlyle Minor Ball will pay for interested people to be trained as umpires.

Being an umpire pays about $45 per twohour game and umpires can work up to five nights a week if they wish. Wilson added that it makes an especially great job for teenagers.

There are many benefits to working as an umpire beyond getting paid.

Umpires have the opportunity to travel across the country for tournaments, costs covered.

However, it’s the community of people who make being involved

with local baseball truly worthwhile for Wilson.

“We have such a good core group (involved with Carlyle Minor Ball). I mentor a lot of kids so I’m usually at the ballpark and if there are any issues, you know, somebody else is there to help them out,” Wilson said.

Wilson encourages anyone who is interested in being an umpire to get involved, regardless of their level of experience.

“Most people think it’s fun. Yeah, of course, you have the occasional grouchy coach or grouchy parent, but we look after all that.”

MP Kitchen responds to discovery of unmarked graves Souris-Moose Mountain MP Robert Kitchen has responded to the unmarked graves found at the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School at Cowessess First Nation.

"Earlier today, Chief Cadmus Delorme of Cowessess First Nation confirmed that 751 unmarked graves were discovered at the former location of the

Marieval Indian Residential School,” Kitchen said in a news release on June 24. "What has been uncovered here in Saskatchewan is unthinkable, and I cannot begin to imagine the devastation that is being felt by the community at this time.

"The legacy of residential schools has had a profoundly lasting and damaging impact on In-

digenous culture, heritage, and language, and much more work needs to be done to address the harmful effects that residential schools had, and still have, on many survivors today.” Cowessess is located near Broadview at the far north end of Kitchen’s constituency.

Kitchen listened to Delorme’s press conference Thursday morning.

Waterworks Revenue for 2020 - $76,865.00 Waterworks Expenditures for 2020 - $91,680.00 Comparison of waterworks revenues to expenditures expressed as a ratio: Revenues 76865 Expenditures 91680 = 0.84 This means that for 2020 the revenues that were collected was only enough to cover 84% of the expenses.

In 2020 we received a MEEP Grant in the amount of $13,000.00 and this was used to fix the north wall of the water plant, as well as install a new furnace. Sewer lines were flushed and this is done every two years, at an added cost of $7,000.00. The media in the roughing filter was changed at a cost of almost $6,000.00.

The $5.00 Utility fee that is paid monthly is set aside for future waterworks capital infrastructure. This utility is to establish a fund for upgrading the water treatment plant and replacement/repair of aging infrastructure. In 2020, $4,520.00 was collected and added to the Utility Fund Term Deposit, which now sits at $35,661.32.

In 2020 the turbidity numbers from the daily test log at the water treatment plant was between 0.11-0.82 well below the 1.00 NTU maximum. The free chlorine ranged from 0.05-3.98 with two tests in the year not meeting the minimum requirement of 0.10. The total chlorine ranged from 0.32-4.32 with two tests in the year not meeting the minimum requirement of 0.50.

In our ongoing effort of continuous improvement of the water quality to our residents we conducted the following maintenance: A) steam cleaned the raw water pre-fill and fill tanks on April 24. B) We replaced the media in the roughing filter on June 29. C) We had a well service company come in and clean well #2 and install a new pump on October 15.

The Drinking Water Quality and Compliance Report, and other information on the Village of Glen Ewen’s Water & Sewage Works, as required under The Municipalities Regulations is available for viewing at the Village Office.

“I thought it was very compelling,” said Kitchen. “Just to hear what was uncovered, it’s unthinkable here Saskatchewan, and I cannot imagine the devastation that’s being felt by that community.

And not only that community, but how it affects all of the First Nations in close proximity and throughout the riding.”

He has reached out to Delorme and the other First Nations within the riding, and is looking forward to the chance to speak with them and hear their concerns.

As far back as a few months ago, Kitchen had heard that Delorme was looking at working with Saskatchewan Polytechnic Institute regarding this issue. But the number of graves discovered was far more than expected. Kitchen urged Canadians to learn from what has happened.

“It’s being taught to our kids in school, and they’re hopefully learning more and more about it. But it’s not just our youth that need to know this. It’s everybody in this whole country that needs

to know about this.”

Kitchen noted the federal Conservative Party is calling on the Government of Canada to follow through with the implementation of Calls to Action 71-76 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, and to provide the community with the needed resources to identify, protect, and honour the children buried at the Marieval Indian Residential School.

A candlelight vigil was held at the site of the unmarked graves on Saturday night.

Arcola celebrated 2021 graduates on June 28

By Kaitlyn Meisner On Monday evening, the Grade 12 students from Arcola School celebrated their graduation alongside their family and community.

Ten students, who were graduating this year, participated in both a ceremony and parade. The ceremony had a limited capacity, which meant it was a private celebration. But the graduates were still able to have their parents as well as a few other family members come and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

The event was organized as a reverse parade. Unlike in traditional parades where graduates would ride by the spectators, this time the roles were reversed and people from the community passed by the students.

Overall, the graduation was hard to plan due to COVID-19 regulations, but Janine Houston, one of the teachers

and organizers of the grad, explained that they were determined to still have one and give the graduates the celebration they deserved.

“It was a challenge this year, just because we didn’t know what we could provide for the kids with the COVID regulations, but they were really big troopers, and we knew we wanted to have the celebration for the kids—we just didn’t know what it would look like,” Houston said.

She also explained that there was great community support, especially as businesses provided financial help when the graduates had done up raffle baskets to fundraise for the event.

The community of Arcola also showed their support for the graduates by putting up banners.

In the end, it was all a great way to congratulate the graduates for their hard work and to help them celebrate the future before them.

Alida news - A great night for the graduates

A grad parade for the Alida Grade 12 students was held on June 25. It began around 5 p.m. from the Alida Rink parking lot and ended on Prairie Avenue, where the centre flower pots held a posted picture of the grads.

Pictures were then taken by family members and friends. The grads also received many congratulations and best wishes as they mingled among everyone in attendance.

The grads were led by the Alida fire truck and each was separated by vintage vehicles as

they walked the designated route. Among these vehicles included the past village Mayor Jim Boettcher and his wife Mary in their white 1988 Cadillac, and the present Mayor Tim Cowan in his white 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, Darryl Dubuc in his red 1966 Ford Mustang, Leanne Dubuc with a black 1969 Camaro SS, Ethan Junk with his blue 1967 Ford Mercury truck and the parade ended with the second Alida fire engine.

These graduates were the students of the last playschool class that was held here in Alida and taught by Lillian Patton. Centre Street

was beautifully decorated with extra flower pots which were all adorned with stakes holding the students’ playschool graduation cape (pink or blue), semi-circled around their Grade 12 graduation picture.

There were many spectators lined along the route, especially on Centre Street – a pleasant surprise for the graduates and for the organizers as well.

You did an excellent job Lil and Sheri with this event. What a great way to send these graduates onto their next life’s adventure.

It was so nice to see them all in their special attire – gorgeous dresses

and smart suits – Outstanding everyone. Congratulations and best wishes to all the Alida grads as well as to their fellow graduates and all Grade 12 grads this year.

Noticed all of the different grade 12 graduation pictures in recent papers – the first big milestone for them to reach and they’ll now begin their next journey.

Among the Manor grads was Charisse Yanchycki (her grandma and mom worked at Alida School).

Congratulations and best wishes Charisse.

Also among the Carlyle grads was Cade Bendtsen (his grandma lives here in Alida, as well as an uncle, aunt and cous-

The school year ended on June 29. Hope all the students and staff will have a great holiday season and enjoy the summer months to the fullest. Hopefully everyone will be back in the fall and everything will be back to normal as well.

Lucien Wilvers, late of Redvers, SK passed away peacefully with his wife Linda, sister Anita and niece Brenda by his side on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the Redvers Health Centre at the age of 81 years.

Lucien will forever be remembered and loved by his wife Linda of 48 years. Lucien will also be greatly missed by his sister Anita (Gorman) Orsted and their daughters; numerous family members and many nieces and nephews as well as many younger hunting friends.

Lucien was predeceased by his parents, Henri and Marceline Wilvers; 3 sisters, Zoe Smibert, Simone Reis and Isabelle Donais and 1 brother Albert in infancy as well as many other family members.

The Visitation was held on Friday, June 18, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Redvers.

The Funeral Mass for Lucien was held on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 10:30 a.m St. Maurice R.C. Church, Bellegarde, SK with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding.

The private family interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Baby it’s hot outside In 1944 the classic song Baby it’s Cold Outside was a hit. I was just one-year-old when that was released but now, years later, I am tempted to try to rewrite the piece.

I’d name it Baby, it’s Hot Outside!

Without going into the graphic details regarding climate change, we’ve definitely been swamped. I thought I’d escaped these blistering temperatures when we moved from the Canadian Prairies to a home just minutes away from the Pacific Ocean but this past week proves how wrong I was.

Throughout the past months that have been marked by pandemic, we’ve been urged to live a life of caution and concern for our own health as well as that of others. Personally, and I’m sure for many others more than me, there’s

a tremendous sense of relief and thanksgiving accompanying the realty that we seem to be coming out of that one; unfortunately, however, this current heat is predicted to last for weeks or even months to come.

wide. Here in Canada, we’ve come face-to-face with the horrific manner in which our First Nations people have been treated; worldwide, ongoing atrocities take the lives of children as well as adults. Friends, it’s hot outside.

Other than running a fan and getting up early to let in cooler air, external temperatures are as they are. As individuals and as a nation, what we can do is to ask forgiveness then offer unconditional love to those around us.

“Repent…that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

Co-op holds annual meeting at the Prairie Dog The Southern Plains Coop spent much of the 2020-21 fiscal year navigating its way through the challenges created

by COVID-19, and now they’re getting ready to emerge from those difficulties.

The co-op hosted its annual general meeting (AGM) on June 21 at the Prairie Dog Drive-In north of Carlyle. For the second consecutive year, the co-op’s AGM saw people pull into the drive-in’s parking stalls and listen to reports in their vehicles through the drive-in’s speaker system.

Approximately 45 people were present.

Financial statements for the year ending Jan. 31, 2021, showed the co-op had sales of $72.8 million in 2020-21, compared with $79.4 million in 2019-20. Cost of goods sold were nearly $59.9 million, down from $67.9 million the previous year.

Expenses were nearly $13.5 million, compared with $13.2 million the previous year.

The co-op had a loss from operations of $345,883, compared with $1.49 million in 2019-20.

But after an loyalty program payment of $1.6 million and member patronage dividend of $873,997 from Federated Co-operatives Ltd., the co-op had savings of $2.1 million, versus $3.8 million the previous year.

After income taxes, net savings were at more than $1.8 million for 2020-21.

The member patronage allocation was about $1,399,846.

The co-op also invested $95,481 into the communities

it serves through donations and member engagement activities.

Brian Enns, the general manager for the co-op, said sales decrease stemmed from the petroleum division, both cardlock and service station sales, as well as the agro department.

“Our petroleum sales were impacted two ways. The first one was deflation, as we seen the price of fuel go from $1.25 a litre to 80 cents a litre at various points in time,” said Enns.

And the other was because people were travelling less during the pandemic.

On the bulk delivery side, they had a good year with the farmers.

All three food stores and the liquor stores saw their sales increase in the past fiscal year, he said.

The strike at the Co-op Refinery Complex in Regina affected their member patronage dividend from FCL, which meant the local co-op had less money to turn over to its members.

And while it was a COVID year, Enns said there were some positives, including retail sales.

“We still made money at the end of the year, so there was an allocation, and there were cheques sent out in the mail here over the last couple of weeks, so they should be in the hands of the members by now,” he said.

Enns was pleased with how the co-op was able to shift during the past 16 months.

The co-op is working on a new liquor store in Carlyle, adjacent to their convenience store and gas bar at the junction of Highways 9 and 13.

They hope to begin construction within the next three weeks and have it open for the fall.

And they’re looking at a new food store in Carlyle for 2023-24, and for other opportunities to diversify.

Wawota news Submitted by Myrna Olson On June 19, family members gathered at the Wawota Cemetery in memory of Daniel Nyeste. Those present were Merv and Linda Satterthwaite, Matthew and Joey Nyeste of Winnipeg, Les and Gail Oliver, Mark, Lindsay and Cydney Nixon from Moosomin, Susan Gobel, Brandon Gobel, Karen Oliver, Theresa and Ezekiel Kosolofski of Regina, Jessica Oliver of Saskatoon, Nathan Oliver of Wapella, Norman and Jackie Oliver of Morris, Man., and Heather Oliver and Lexi of Wawota.

Cremation had taken place and interment was in the Wawota Cemetery with his grandparents , Grant and Pat Oliver.

At the recent graduation exercises in Wawota, Governor General Awards were presented to Brianna De Roo for 2019 and to Madison Wilson for 2020.

Victoria Weatherald has been recognized by Brandon University for achieving a grade point average of 4.0

or higher and has been named to the President's Honour Society for the 2020-21 year. She is pursuing a degree in physical education.

Joe Brisbois enjoyed a surprise Father's Day visit from his daughter Donna Schaffer and granddaughter Jenna Mayer of Regina.

Crystal Mary Yanyu attended the Grade 12 graduation of her daughter Audrey Barath in Esterhazy on June 26.

Word has been received of the passing of Leonard Rance of Carman, Man. He passed away on June 20 at the age of 93 years. Wawota fondly remembers Leonard and his wife Mary.

Mary was the United Church minister in Wawota in the 1990s. Both were great assets to our community.

Keith Olson and Garry Dickson have resumed with providing music at care homes in the area. They entertained at the Wawota Care Home on June 22 and at the Kipling Care Home on June 23.

Kienlen will be the board chairperson and ThaubergerSmith will be the vice-chair.

In his report, Keinlen noted the Estevan food branch began offering the Co-op Click and Collect online food ordering and pickup service, which is proving to be popular with customers.

“We are in preliminary planning stages to expand the services offered under the agro umbrella, namely bulk fertilizer commodities,” Keinlen said.

The board chair noted the safety of staff and customers is and remains their top priority.

Procedures were put in place, with new protocols, policies, equipment and sanitation

measures.

“The implementation of grocery ordering and free delivery within our communities and outlying areas remains utilized and illustrates how our co-op continue to be community focused during these times.”

While the co-op has held its AGM at the drive-in for the past two years, they haven’t decided how they will approach next year’s meeting. Traditionally the co-op has held a supper and then the business session of the AGM. Enns said the co-op is looking forward to business returning to normal on July 11.

Masks will be optional for people to wear. The arrows on the floor will eventually fade away, and the Plexiglas shields will eventually disappear as well.

Centennial anniversary of the Legion poppy “In Flanders fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row,” those words, written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McRae on May 3, 1915, are the first lines of what may be one of the most famous poems in our land.

We have all heard the poem In Flanders Fields in school and it is recited every year on Remembrance Day. Its significance is shared by those who served in the military and by those who honour those who served.

John McRae was a Canadian doctor who served in the First World War and was inspired to write In Flanders Fields after attending the funeral of a good friend who was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres in France.

Contemporary accounts indicate that McRae was not satisfied with the poem, but it was published anyway and became a popular and enduring testament to the sacrifices

that war demands.

After the end of the war on Nov. 11, 1918, Madame Anna Guerin of France pushed to distribute poppies on the anniversary of Armistice Day to raise funds for veterans and to honour those who died in that conflict.

On July 6, 1921 the forerunners of the Royal Canadian Legion adopted the poppy as the flower of remembrance. The poppy has also been adopted by veterans groups around the world to honour those who served and their sacrifices. Each country has its own version of the poppy, but the blood red colour and its meaning are ubiquitous.

John MacRae’s poem may not be as well known outside of Canada as it is within, but the symbol of the poppy is recognized internationally. The poppy has been with us for 100 years as a symbol, as a remembrance and as a warning of the horrors of war.
