Band students fundraise by busking in Kipling’s Bell Park

By Laura Kish Fifteen band students from Kipling and area were part of Music in the Park in conjunction with Kipling’s town-wide garage sale on July 17.

The Kipling Band Parents Association organized most of the event, especially the barbecued hamburger and hotdog lunch.

“They asked if I thought I could get a group of band students together,” explains band teacher Bonnie Dash.

“We could try having some buskers,” suggested Dash. “They thought that was a good idea.”

The Band Parents Association likes involving the kids in the fundraisers because the money goes towards their trips.

Some of the funds raised will go towards the band trips next year. For the seniors, it will be to Banff, Alta., although the intermediate and junior bands will also be doing a trip

which is yet to be determined.

“The kids that came to play thought it was fun,” says Dash. “It’s not serious…it’s just for fun.”

Most of the kids didn’t know what busking was but once they realized how it works they thought “Wow, this is great.”

The wind wreaked havoc for part of the morning with it blowing around the music sheets. The crowd who showed up were delighted to have a burger in the park while listening to some tunes from the local band students.

Some of the students made their way to Main Street to busk for donations and thought it was kind of cool to get cash for performing a tune.

The groups are quite big now. There’s over 70 seniors and over 70 intermediates when they all get together.

“Our band program grew through the pandemic,” says Dash.

Band allows students a chance to practise emotions, fine motor skills, discipline, rigor and persistence.

Students get to learn skills needed in today’s workplace: critical thinking, teamwork, leadership and social skills. Students in band learn so much more than music. They learn self-discipline, team skills, goal setting and work ethic.

Kate Lowenberger, president of the Kipling Band Parents Association, comments: “We made approximately $1,300 from both the barbecue lunch and the students’ busking for donations.

I was amazed. It was awesome.”

“We’ll change it up next year so it’s closer to the end of the school year to include all the band students. We’ll make it a real concert for the public and have a barbecue again in conjunction with it.”

Band – it’s a team where everyone wins and no one is ever on the bench.

“Our band teacher, Mrs. Dash, is amazing,” says Lowenberger. “She is phenomenal and so talented.”

“She has built this program so much. I think we have the best band program in south-

east Saskatchewan.”

“She finds the kids’ strengths and she has a unique way of getting everything she can out of the students. She has a gift.”

“The students are so lucky to have Mrs. Dash!”

Kenosee Superslides remain closed

By Emily Klatt and David Willberg A popular tourist attraction in southeast Saskatchewan has been closed while it waits for its licence from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

The Kenosee Superslides, which operate out of the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, were slated to open for the season on June 30, but that was pushed back to July 11 – the day that the provincial public health measures were lifted.

But they didn’t open on July 11, either. Jan Armstrong, who owns and operates the facility alongside his father Harvey, said the closure was due to “circumstances outside of (their) control.”

Doug Dahl, a spokesperson for the SHA, said the authority is focused on the health and safety of users at all swimming pools and water parks. SHA public health inspectors work with operators to ensure they are meeting standards for water quality and safety.

The SHA has received the operational licence application for the Superslides. The

application is currently under review. In an interview with the Observer, Jan Armstong expressed confusion over why the Superslides remain without a licence.

“We have no idea why the SHA is stalling. In past years, they’ve given us probationary licences while they review their findings so that we can at least have revenue coming in. And in the last two years, they have chosen not to do that,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong said he had hired third-party experts to come and verify the safety of the Superslides. Armstrong would not give specifics, but said they were working with people from both a Reginabased engineering company and Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s School of Mining, Energy and Manufacturing.

“They checked ... all the fiberglass in our park of our usable slides foot for foot. Foot for foot, every slide. We spent about three weeks doing it,” Armstrong said. “There were a few hiccups but I mean nothing that we haven’t been able to fix in the past.”

While there are areas of the Superslides which could be improved upon, Armstrong said these improvements do not fall outside the category of regular maintenance required by a waterpark of any age.

According to Armstrong, the Superslides’ inability to open has had a negative impact on not just the business, but on the surrounding community as well. “You have to understand the situation we’re in. There’s a lot of people in part that depend on the numbers that come to this waterslide park in order to survive the winter. Right?

Because … your average year out here at the park [would] bring in anywhere [from] 50 to 70,000 people a year to a very remote part of the province,” Armstrong said.

Ultimately, Armstrong just hopes to be able to reopen the business so that visitors can once again enjoy the fun of the Kenosee Superslides.

“We’re just trying to inject some joy back into a postCOVID world because the last year and a half everyone’s been suffering … all we want to do is give families something to do in

People have taken to social media to question the SHA’s decision and to ask about refunds.

Kenneth Sibbald started a petition on the change.org website, calling on the SHA to allow the slides to reopen. As of Tuesday morning, it had received 2,490 online signatures.

He notes they were very lucky to have the slides open last year, but another year of lost revenue is a big blow for the park. Sibbald urged people to call and ask the SHA about the holdup.

“Let them know we want our water park getaway to stay open in Saskatchewan. The new owners have dumped a tonne of money into the slides to make them good as new, to make our experiences something to remember,” Sibbald wrote.

Last year the attraction’s opening date was pushed back due to COVID-19. Then in August, the park was forced to close for nearly a week, after the SHA deemed the facility structurally unsafe for public use.

The SHA gave the green light for most of the park to reopen a few days later.

Carnduff RCMP investigate missing person case The Carnduff RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing person.

Nathan Rubbert, age 38, was last seen on July 18 at a residence in Oxbow.

He is described as being six feet tall, weighing 180 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue shirt and a ball cap.

Initially it was believed that he was in a black 2007 G35 Infiniti car. The vehicle has been located, and police have determined it is not related to this missing person investigation.

A search was held for Rubbert on July 21, with approximately 50 people participating.

The search was organized

by Gail McConnell and Sheri Gibson, who are both connected to Rubbert. Searchers have been mostly on foot, but they also used drones, helicopters, airplanes, all-terrain vehicles, side-by-sides and trucks, according to Gibson.

“We’re trying to cover as much (ground) as possible,” said McConnell. “We’ve been mostly running … along the river.”

One person employed a thermal imaging camera.

They were also looking in abandoned farm yards, hills and other areas.

Gibson noted that Rubbert

is a close friend of her husband’s. They received word on July 20 that his mother was concerned about his whereabouts, and reached out to Gibson’s husband.

McConnell works with Rubbert’s mother, and thought it was important to have a search.

Gibson noted that Rubbert has changed his appearance, and an updated photo has been circulated. Rubbert recently had a haircut and he has also shaved his moustache and beard.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Carnduff RCMP at 306482-4400, 310 RCMP or 911 in an emergency.

Jeffrey Straker concert takes place at Carlyle’s museum

By Kaitlyn Meisner On Saturday evening, singer and songwriter Jeffrey Straker performed in Carlyle at the Rusty Relics Museum.

The outdoor concert, which started at 7 p.m. had a cozy feel to it as people brought their lawn chairs and gathered about the stage in the back of the Rusty Relics’ property.

The concert was part of a tour that Straker has been on called the Pandemic Piano Backyard Tour, which will include over 50 such concerts.

Straker also performed at the Moose Mountain Lodge beforehand, but that performance was moved inside

due to thunderstorms.

Thankfully, however, the storm passed and Straker was still able to perform his concert at the museum without any major issues.

Overall, the concert was a delight, with Straker’s storytelling songs enchanting the audience throughout the evening. The audience, which mostly consisted of local Carlyle residents, was also able to take a peek at the interior of the museum and take a look at some of the exhibits during the intermission. In addition, popcorn and drinks were being sold.

Straker was also delighted to have been part of the concert and enjoyed the audience’s

energy.

“That was a really nice audience…they were fantastic and…a live performance is an exchange of energy, and the musicians push energy off the stage, and you hope you get it back and tonight we got it back…it made it a really magical night.”

The concert consisted of many songs which highlighted the small town, agrarian lifestyle of the Prairies, which Straker grew up around.

Straker, as a musical artist, likes to define his genre as “roots folk,” as it has elements of folk music, but since folk has progressed to include many different variations, he also emphasizes the way that his songs

“The funny thing is, even though they might

be story songs about the Prairies, I find people anywhere can sort of connect to them … cause they’re more songs about sort of like experience or places versus specifically here. But I also do think that songwriters from

wherever they’re from have a duty to chronical that place, so I’m trying to do a bit of that, too.”

The Story Walk Project, created by Anne Ferguson, a specialist in chronic disease prevention for the Vermont Department of Health, came up with the novel idea of combining reading with exercise and not the magazine-proppedon-a-treadmill type, either. A proponent of getting people out of the house and into the fresh air, Ferguson concocted the kid-aimed Story Walk, which is brilliant in its simplicity.

The pages are removed from a children's book, laminated and mounted on stakes which are placed in their correct sequence along walkways.

This project is brought to the community by Southeast Regional Library headquarters, who put together several kits to use within our region for the summer.

Take a walk along the path between the campground and the swimming pool in Kipling for your chance to read the latest story.

“There’s been lots of feedback from the families that have checked it out,” says librarian Charla Smyth. “They were really excited about seeing the stories.”

“Our Summer Reading Club has also been a big hit,” explains Smyth.

“We’ve got lots of prizes this year which is a good incentive for the kids to do their reading.”

For some kids reading just six books is a big deal whereas other kids reading 100 books may be “their thing.”

Every time a child uses their library card, they are entered into the draw for their chance to win a prize.

There are educational prizes for the grand prizes and other

smaller prizes as well.

“Kids are excited and their parents are just as excited,” says Smyth about the Summer Reading Program.

“We’re also still doing the craft bags through the summer,” explains Smyth.

“There’s 20 Take ‘n Make bags available every week and all are gone so it’s going over well.”

The library wasn’t able to do an in-person program due to COVID, so Smyth posts an instructional video every week depicting how the craft is to be made.

It’s great for families to craft together.

Moe, Sask. Party surviving pandemic

By Murray Mandryk Four years ago, things were looking as bad for the Saskatchewan Party as they have looked since it took power in 2007.

This requires a bit of perspective. This party is on an amazing historical run.

By the end of this term, the Sask. Party will have enjoyed the third longest streak of consecutive years in office in Saskatchewan’s history.

They have become Saskatchewan’s natural governing party. And not even a sizeable dip in popularity in 2017 seriously threatened that.

In 2017, the then leaderless NDP pulled somewhat close to the Sask. Party in the opinion polls — largely because it actually pulled ahead of the Sask. Party in cities like Regina. However, the Sask. Party’s substantial rural base would have likely meant another majority, had an election been called then.

What 2017 tells us, however, is that governments facing harsh circumstances are governments that are politically vulnerable. This is clearly the case in Alberta and Manitoba where Premiers Jason Kenney’s and Brian Pallister’s respective conservative-minded administrations could fall to the NDP. What it doesn’t really explain is why Sask. Party Premier Scott Moe continues to do phenomenally well and not only compared with other conservative premiers on the Prairies. Arguably, Saskatchewan faces worse circumstances now than it did in 2017.

The province faced what was approaching a billion-dollar deficit and an economy slowed by a decline in oil prices. The political situation was made even more severe when then-premier Brad Wall — the most successful premier on election-day and the most popular premier since the invention of modern-day polling — announced he was stepping down. At that time, there was no obvious successor to the charismatic Wall.

Flash forward to 2021 and compare that political situation with the situation that Scott Moe now finds himself in.

Moe is still staring down a worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Notwithstanding substantial progress in reducing case numbers, Saskatchewan still has more active cases per 100,000 people than any other jurisdiction outside the Yukon and Manitoba. And we have highest percentage of unvaccinated people in the country.

Moreover, Saskatchewan lost 6,500 jobs from May to June — a time of a year when the number of working people in this province usually skyrockets.

Reopening in July will certainly encourage job hiring, but the economy remains a big problem. Notwithstanding a recovery in oil prices, a drought should have us all worried about the economic problems that lie ahead.

After all, bad economic news quickly translates into bad budget news. Last year’s 2020-21 rivalled the 2016-17 budget when it came to the size of the deficit and this year’s 2021-22 deficit is nearly double last year’s deficit.

This has not been lost on the bond rating agencies.

Moody’s of New York has already lowered Saskatchewan’s credit score. DBRS Morningstar kept Saskatchewan at its current rating and even offered optimism that the Sask. Party government was “laying the groundwork for a strong recovery once the pandemic subsides.”

Yet through all this, Moe remains among the most popular premiers in Canada.

It might partly have something to do with current NDP leader Ryan Meili’s struggles to connect with most Saskatchewan people. The contrast with Moe has clearly favoured the Sask. Party.

But the simply reality is, Moe is surviving the COVID-19 pandemic — the worse situation his government has faced — better than most.

Shelley Luedtke The first weekend in July was supposed to be fence staining days at our house, but the extreme heat put an end to those plans. Instead, we dove into a storage area and sorted through tubs of belongings. I know how to have a good time on a long weekend, don’t I? As we worked our way through family mementos, keepsakes and seasonal decorations (it’s a lot easier to get rid of Christmas décor in the scorching July heat than when waves of nostalgia take over in December), I came across items from my university days, including a stack of term papers I had kept.

I smiled at, but was not surprised by, the fact that I took two papers from different courses and turned them into opportunities to write about the Olympics. My fourth year of university took place during

an Olympic year and I managed to find ways to justify copious amounts of viewing by calling it research.

One was for a physical education class and was about the social construct of physical competition while the other was for sociology and looked at the media construction of the Games.

Ahh, good times.

As a 10-year-old, I vividly recall watching the luge competition with my dad during the Winter Games. From then on, I was hooked.

I have been known to rearrange my schedule (well let’s be honest, my life) to incorporate watching as many events as possible each time the Olympics roll around.

So it is with rather mixed feelings that we had the opening ceremonies for an Olympics that is happening one year later than scheduled, and shouldn’t be happening at all according to some.

But it isn’t just during a pandemic that the very existence of the Games is debated.

It is argued the Olympics increase tourism and give a boost to local economies. England welcomed more than a visitor every second in the year following their hosting duties while the Rio de Janeiro Games

saw Brazil set a tourism record. The Olympics result in improved infrastructure, new and improved venues, and often an increased sense of national pride.

On the flipside, the Olympics always run over budget and are a drain on resources.

People are displaced to make way for venues and housing. And sadly, the infrastructure and new construction often fall into disuse and cities are left with expensive unused facilities.

It’s unfortunate, but just like in any enterprise, the Olympics can bring out the worst in people. Committees can take bribes. Corporations can exploit. Athletes can cheat. Schemers can make money selling fake tickets and merchandise. On and on and on.

The Olympics will be people at their best.

Skier Hermann Maier experiences a horrific crash in the downhill yet gets back on the slopes to win two gold medals just days later. Eric Moussambani gets to the Olympics through a wildcard program for athletes from developing countries. The swimmer from Equitorial Guinea had never seen let alone swam in an Olympicsized swimming pool.

He finished in last place

in a qualifier, far behind every other competitor, but his perseverance is loudly cheered from first to last stroke. Canadian sailor Lawrence Lemieux is in a position to win a silver medal when he abandons his race to go help two capsized rowers from another country who hit choppy waters.

A runner who finds out his competitor had a faulting starting block asks that the race be rerun. A cross country ski coach hands a pole to a competitor from another nation when hers broke on the course. A long jumper demonstrates a new technique to an athlete who went on to best his distance. And on it goes. Story after story of dedication, character, heart and sometimes, selflessness.

So I put on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic tshirt my sister gave me for Christmas in 2019 and I will watch the athletes doing what they have prepared for because of, and in spite of, the empty stands, the caution on the part of the host country, and the questions surrounding it all. It’s simply a desire to witness those who have trained for years strive to fulfill the Olympic motto. Faster, Higher, Stronger. That’s my outlook.

Scavanger hunt at White Bear

Submitted by Amanda Meyer White Bear Lake Resort cottagers enjoyed a scavenger hunt hosted by Lake Front Treasures by Amanda Meyer and Shelley Lueck Jewelry.

Twenty-five eager

groups signed up to take part in the hunt. Clues were based on song lyrics that matched cabin names or characteristics.

When clues were found, the lucky group returned to claim a prize of pottery or jewelry. Organizers do-

nated 10 prizes for the event.

The first scavenger hunt attracted about 50 participants. Everyone had a great time.

The neighbour organizers look forward to next year’s event, and hope that other creative neighbours will join in.

From the Legion hut During the last week of July, there are two dates to which the Royal Canadian Legion would like to draw attention.

The first is on July 26 and is the anniversary of the unveilling of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France in 1936. The memorial is an impressive, towering sculpture designed by Canadian sculptor and architect Walter Seymour Allward.

It was erected on the highest point of Vimy Ridge which is the site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, on land that was granted to Canada by France in 1922. The land was granted by France for the memorial and battlefield site to the people of Canada “freely and for all time.”

Inscribed on the memorial are the names of the 11,285 Canadian military personnel who were “missing and presumed dead” in France during the First World War. Almost 7,000 more are listed on another memorial as “missing and presumed dead” in Belgium.

This memorial was placed on the site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge that took place on April 9, 1917 and was a battle that helped define the Canadian identity. It was the first battle in which

all troops were Canadian and all commanders were Canadian. It was a resounding victory and before the battle, it was considered by other wartime commanders to be an impregnable stronghold.

Yet the Canadian army took it in one day of unimaginable fighting, devastating loss of life, and unbelievable acts of valour and heroism. France granted the land there to Canada in honour of the success and sacrifice of the Canadian military and the Canadian Government commissioned and erected the monument to be unveiled on July 26, 1936.

It stands there today, towering 110 metres over the Douai Plain expressing the grief and sorrow for the loss of life and honouring those who made that sacrifice.

The second date of note is July 27, which is the anniversary of the Armistice of the Korean War which was signed in 1953. The Korean War started on June 25, 1950, with a massive artillery barrage from North Korea. Two days later, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution authorizing member states to provide military assis-

tance to South Korea.

On December 18, 1950 the first Canadian troops arrived in South Korea and, in total, 26,791 Canadian military personnel served in Korea during the combat phase and as peacekeepers after the Armistice was signed. Of those Canadians who served, 516 died and more than 1,200 were wounded.

As the fighting in the Korean War swept up and down the Korean peninsula, Canadian forces distinguished themselves in a number of battles against Chinese and North Korean forces. The Battle of Kapyong, the Battle of Hill 355, the Battle of Kowang-San, and the Battle of Hill 187 are all notable for the valour and determination shown by the Canadian troops.

The armistice was finally signed on July 27, 1953, ending the fighting and establishing the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea; however no peace treaty has ever been signed between the two nations.

Motocross riders gather in Carlyle for Golfer of the Week: Chaelynn Boutin the first round of 2021

By Emily Klatt Motocross enthusiasts from across the region gathered in Carlyle last weekend for the first round of the South Corner Racing Circuit.

The South Corner Racing Circuit is a motocross series in southern Saskatchewan.

Races were held July 17 at the Bowen Rekken Memorial Track and featured more than 100 riders across 11 divisions.

“I think there was a lot of excitement [and] a lot of nerve … [with] that being the first race, most of the riders haven’t raced anywhere else yet this year,” said SCRC president Kate Lees.

One race was held for each division. After being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCRC was finally able to host a banquet celebrating the champions of the 2020 race series on Saturday as well.

“I honestly can’t tell you how many hours a week we put in just between ... finding the sponsors

like doing pre-registration, doing points, doing memberships ... talking to the Government of Saskatchewan, making sure that we are good to go racing ... definitely a lot of hours put in,” Lees said of the work that went into planning the 2021 race series.

Lees would particularly like to thank those who spent extra time preparing the racetrack: Brian Lees, Brad Wyatt, Joey Nelson and Chris Russell, as well as racing partners Moose Mountain Leisure and the Carlyle Rental Centre.

Round two of the SCRC series is a double-header in Estevan on July 24 and 25.

A shot to remember

Chaelynn Boutin may only be in her early 30s, but she’s already been golfing for more than 20 years.

The Carlyle resident first picked up a set of golf clubs around age ten and hasn’t really put them down since. Boutin golfed competitively from Grades 7-12 while attending high school in Kipling.

“I more or less got started with the school program,” Boutin said.

“We golfed in tournaments and things like that.”

A long-time member of the Carlyle Golf Club, Boutin is a regular at the Ladies’ Night held there Tuesday evenings. She can usually be found on the course a couple other nights of the week as well.

“I do like to try and golf on other courses, but it's just so convenient to golf here in Carlyle and we do have a beautiful course.”

If you’re looking for a fun night out, Boutin suggests checking out both Ladies’ Night and Pairs’ Night at the Carlyle Golf Club, as they’re always looking for more golfers.

Moose Mountain Soccer Club presented with prize

By Kaitlyn Meisner Moose Mountain Soccer Club (MMSC) was presented a cheque on July 15 for $5,000

by Living Sky Sports and the Saskatchewan Soccer Association.

The presentation, which took place at Carlyle Town Hall, was organized to congratulate the club on winning the provincial Soccer Town Saskatchewan competition this year.

During the meeting, Moose Mountain Soccer Club was able to show their gratitude for the prize money, while also emphasizing the club’s continued support of the growth of soccer in Saskatchewan.

Scott Kirkness, the social media co-ordinator for MMSC, gave a speech at the presen-

tation thanking the SSA and Living Sky Sports for naming Carlyle as Soccer Town Saskatchewan, while also expressing support for the soccer stadium that’s to be built in Saskatoon.

The competition, which was hosted by Living Sky Sports and the Saskatchewan Soccer Association, was especially focused on the growth of soccer in Saskatchewan. The growth of professional soccer is one of these organizations’ latest goals, so the competition especially rested on each club’s expression of their support for the growth of soccer and the possibilities of professional soccer in the province.

The competition consisted of submitting a video which uniquely represented the club’s commitment to soc-

cer and its growth.

Telia Dolphin, the MMSC president, was also present at the meeting along with Krista Dolphin, the vice-president, and some of the kids from the club.

Overall, the club was quite surprised and excited to have won the Saskatchewan Soccer Town competition. In fact, the club had really only known about the competition a few days before the deadline and had to quickly pull together a video to submit.

Dolphin explained that winning the competition was really important for the club, despite the rushed events that took place in order to enter.

They had financial needs that needed to be met, and the prize money will help with growing the club.

Southeast softball player commits to next level in career

By Kaitlyn Meisner A talented young softball player from southeast Saskatchewan has committed to play at a higher level for the 2021-22 school year.

Morgan Walter, a centrefielder and middle infielder, will play for the McCook Community College Indians in McCook, Neb. – a junior college team that plays in the National Junior Colle-

giate Athletics Association’s (NJCAA) Division 1 ranks. She will be studying sport and recreation management, with a coaching minor.

The NJCAA is for two-year collegiate programs.

She said she selected the college for several reasons, most notably the size of McCook, as it is similar to Estevan.

“I’m just a small town girl, so I don’t like

anything too big. And then another thing is their softball program is developing really well.

Last year they had an outstanding overall record for their season, and the coach is really doing a great job of building the program, and he does a wonderful job of transferring his students out into Division 1 colleges.”

outstanding for a junior college. The coach is in his second year with the program.

She thought this would be a great opportunity to get a little more experience at the collegiate level, and then transfer to an National Collegiate Athletics Association Division 1 school.

“Academically, it has all of the courses that I want to take that will help better my degree so far,” she said.

Walter committed to play for the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., in 2018, and spent her first year there in 201920. Then she took a year off school and decided not to return to the U.S. due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She wound up playing with the University of Regina Cougars and spent a year taking classes from home, but decided to finish her collegiate career in the U.S., because that was her dream.

The park is already home to the Artist’s Colony, a small group of cabins where artist come each summer to share their work with park visitors. But on July 24, a wide range of arts activities will be happening throughout the entire park as

part of the Cabin Fever Art Festival.

The Hungry Moose is on the loose with a food truck

By Kaitlyn Meisner Arcola’s local eatery, The Hungry Moose Café & Bakery, has branched out to include a new location. There is now a food truck located at White Bear’s Hotel Beach.

The food truck, dubbed Hungry Moose on the Loose, is open, and is a great spot to curb the summer munchies. Open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, the truck serves everything from hamburgers to ice cream to iced coffee.

The location in Arcola, which only started in October of last year, has had some difficult times due to COVID-19.

However, the business is finally moving forward and opening up to new opportunities.

Tricia Colpitts, the owner of the Hungry Moose, explained that it was her goal to try and set up something for the summer in White Bear at the beach, where there are currently very few food options. However, she also hopes to eventually have a regular seasonal location at

White Bear. At the moment, the food truck is actually a trailer that’s been converted into a food truck.

“I do hope to find a second location at the lake and maybe for the first five years we’ll get a real food truck moving forward and then [it] would be nice to actually have a seasonal location up there that we could do a little bit more with.” The food truck, which is mostly run by Colpitts’ daughter Kyra Cochrane, serves many of the homemade food items which the loca-

tion in Arcola sells, such as their burgers. However, the food truck also has some specialty items that the Arcola location does not have, like candy apples and gourmet popcorn.

Overall, The Hungry Moose on the Loose is a great spot to stop and grab a bite to eat while enjoying the beach at White Bear.

The loss of a job can lead to a lack of purpose and change in your daily routine. Losing your sense of purpose through work can lead to depression or other mental health struggles.

Being a hard worker can be a part of a person’s identity and the grief from losing this can also bring a deep sadness. Job loss can also increase anxiety, especially in today’s climate, as usually it is a decision made outside of one’s control. Our communities have great resources for individuals facing unemployment. One of these resources is Southeast Advocates for Employment (SAFE). This organization helps deal with employment barriers and provides support with employment search and skill building.

Southeast Newcomer Services (SNS) is another resource that helps those recently seeking refuge or immigrating to Canada in settling into the southeast area, including support with employment search.

Another service that can help when a job loss hits is The Salvation Army in both Estevan and Weyburn. The Salvation Army has community services and can help to access food as well as much needed items in

emergency situations.

Job loss is a difficult loss to experience, especially right now; many decisions are being made that affect financial stability of those living in the southeast. It is normal after experiencing job loss to feel angry, sad, defeated, anxious and stressed. A reflective question that can be helpful when experiencing adversity such as job loss is to replace “Why is this happening to me?” with “What is this trying to teach me?”

Feeling shaded and secure

During these weeks of oppressive heat, one of my favourite places to sit and relax is on a lawn chair situated under our back deck.

While I still have a great view of the yard and of back alley traffic, I’m close enough to neighbours on both sides to hold a conversation without leaving the comfort of my cool spot.

A funeral service was held last Friday at the Wawota United

Church for Tom Dorrance. Tom passed away on April 5, 2020.

A lunch was provided by the United Church Ladies at the Wawota Town Hall.

Julia Houff, a Grade 12 student at Wawota Parkland High, qualified for the 2021 National High School Rodeo on July 7. On July 18th, she and her horse Flitt travelled to Lincoln, Neb., to compete in the barrel racing

event. On Aug. 6-8, she will be in Swift Current to compete in the 2021 Canadian High School Rodeo Finals.

Sympathy to the family and friends of Jeff Hirtle who passed away on July 8 at the age of 54 years. He leaves his sons, Shane (Kendra) and Jesse. his mother, Gwen Hirtle, and baby grandson, Cohen. A social gathering and supper were held at the Hirtle Farm on July

16 in Jeff’s memory.

Saskatchewan Express will be touring provincial parks once again this summer, presenting Your Dream Come True, the musical game show that brings your vacation to life.

Guests can bring their blankets and lawn chairs and settle in under the sunset for an evening of song and family-friendly entertainment.

Guided in-person programming, led by Sask Parks interpreters, will be available at 20 provincial parks and includes activities such as forest hikes, survival skill lessons, scavenger hunts, campfire games and more. Park visitors can take a step back in time at Cannington Manor, Fort Carlton and Wood Mountain Post provincial historic parks with guided tours, programs and special events.

Self-guided Park Activity Kits are available for pick-up daily in a number of parks. The kits include everything needed to complete a craft, explore the park, or spark creativity from a campsite. Distribution boxes can be found at visitor centres, service

Also, due to recent rainfall and cooler weather, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is lifting the provincial fire ban that has been in place since July 2. The ban had applied to all Crown lands, provincial parks and the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District.

Some municipalities continue to experience a high fire risk and may choose to keep their fire bans in place. The SPSA continues to encourage all municipalities to examine the fire risk in their local area and reminds the public to practice fire safety.

Anyone who spots a wildfire can call 1-800667-9660, dial 9-1-1 or contact their closest SPSA Forest Protection Area office.

Report from the Saskatchewan Legislature Submitted by Daryl Harrison The hot and dry conditions across the province are creating challenges for our farmers and ranchers.

Topsoil moisture levels continue to decrease, and many areas will have their yields and quality impacted without some timely rain. Many of our livestock producers are also having trouble sourcing feed and ensuring quality water sources.

Effective immediately, changes will be made to allow low yielding crops to be put to alternate use to support the livestock sector. The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation is doubling the low yield appraisal threshold values for customers who salvage their cereal or pulse crops as feed, without negatively impacting

future individual coverage.

Crop Insurance coverage will not be negatively impacted if customers chose to divert grain crops to feed.

Livestock producers can gain access to feed sources from Crop Insurance customers who choose to put their crops to a use other than harvest. I encourage all local producers to contact your local SCIC office to discuss options.

The Government of Saskatchewan is also making changes to temporarily increase the maximum funding a livestock producer can receive from the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP) for dugouts, wells and pipelines.

Presently, under FRWIP, costs related to dugouts, pipelines and wells are funded at 50 per cent of eligible

costs, to a maximum rebate of $50,000 over the life of the program.

For the period April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, the maximum rebate for livestock producers only will increase to $150,000.

The first $50,000 will be based on a 5050 cost-share and the remaining $100,000 will be on a 70-30 government-producer cost-share.

Agriculture is at the heart of our province and your government is working to ensure we support our producers as we get through this difficult growing season.

Despite these challenges, Saskatchewan is now fully open, and residents are set to have an amazing summer seeing family, friends, our province and our Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Southeast organizations earn gaming grants The provincial government has provided over $2.1 million through the Charitable Gaming Grant program to support more than 700 groups and organizations across the province.

“As Saskatchewan emerges from the pandemic and life returns to normal, volunteers have been eager to support important initiatives in their communities,” said Jim Reiter, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). “These most recent charitable gaming grants will assist in those efforts and continue to help minor sports programs, local service clubs, educational endeavours and

many other great services.”

The quarterly grants paid by SLGA are based on a percentage of net proceeds raised through licensed charitable gaming activities such as Bingos, raffles, break-open tickets, Texas hold’em poker competitions and Monte Carlo events. Charitable gaming reports submitted by groups as part of their charitable gaming licence are used

by SLGA to automatically calculate grant amounts.

Two organizations in Arcola – the Arcola Daycare Inc. ($1,505.84) and the Optimist Club of Arcola ($7,540.48) – received total support of $9,046.32.

Also receiving funding were the Carievale Recreation Board ($1,060.50), the Carlyle and District Leisure Complex ($325), the Carnduff and District Lions Club ($5,703.35), the Gainsborough and District Lions Club ($511.25), Choose Life Ministry out of Glen Ewen ($1,961.11), the Kipling Fire Department ($271.17), the Lampman and District Lions Club ($1,452.10), the Maryfield Auditorium Committee ($1,332.58), the Oxbow Community Childcare Centre ($191.25), the Tecumseh branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, which is in Stoughton ($5,492.34) and the Windthorst and District Lions Club ($375).

COVID-19 precautions, all public health restrictions have been lifted.

This includes mandatory masking and limits on events and gathering sizes.

While COVID-19 is still here, more than half of our population is now fully vaccinated which gives us greater protection as we begin returning to normal activities.

At a time when individuals and families are navigating what life will look like as we emerge from the pandemic, I want to provide some clarity as to where we are at today.

While the public health order requiring masking in indoor spaces has come to an end, masking will continue to be an option for all residents who wish to do so. Some businesses may also choose to maintain masking requirements but that is up to them.

The removal of public health orders does not mean the pandemic is over. COVID-19 will continue to circulate, particularly among unvaccinated populations, and being fully vaccinated is our best protection. All

residents will continue to be offered first and second doses.

While there are currently no COVID-19 vaccines approved for children under 12, all residents 12 and up are encouraged to be fully vaccinated to afford these groups the best circle of protection possible. Children can contract, transmit and become ill with COVID-19, though the risk for serious health outcomes is lower than older populations.

If you are fully vaccinated, all activities with children will be considered lower risk.

If you are eligible for either your first or second dose, you can find a vaccination clinic or pharmacy location online at www.saskatchewan.ca/covid-19-vaccine.

Prekindergarten to Grade 12 schools will return to regular operations for the 202122 school year and licensed childcare facilities can now return to regular pre-pandemic operations.

Long-term care homes and personal care homes may allow an unlimited number of visitors and family

members for their residents, subject to scheduling limitations in a home.

Visitors and families will be screened for symptoms of COVID-19 and will be offered rapid antigen testing in Saskatchewan Health Authority facilities. Visitors and families are strongly encouraged to continue to wear masks during visits and to maintain physical distance, especially if not fully vaccinated. Staff will continue to take precautions to protect residents including masking, screening, rapid testing and use of personal protective equipment.

Public health will continue monitoring and responding to localized COVID-19 outbreaks. Testing will still be available, contact tracing will continue and cases and close contacts who are not fully immunized may be advised to isolate by public health officials.

Local hockey fans will have a couple of reasons to cheer for the newest team in the NHL The Seattle Kraken held their expansion draft on Wednesday, and selected two defencemen from Carlyle who played hockey extensively in the southeast region.

Haydn Fleury, a 25-yearold defenceman, was

plucked by the Kraken from the Anaheim Ducks, and his younger brother Cale was selected from the Montreal Canadiens.

The Kraken picked one player from each of the teams in the NHL, with the exception of the Vegas Gold-

en Knights, who entered the league in 2017.

Haydn Fleury was selected in the first round, seventh overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He won a Calder Cup with the ‘Canes American Hockey League affiliate

in 2019, and has played 179 NHL games over five seasons.

He was dealt to Anaheim at the 2021 NHL trade deadline.

Cale Fleury, 22, was selected in the third round, 87th overall, by the Montreal

Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. He appeared in 41 NHL games in the 2019-20 NHL season, and in his first NHL game, his Canadiens team faced his brother and the Hurricanes.

The Kraken begin play in the NHL this fall.
