Get creative in Kipling with your pumpkin carving

By Laura Kish Get creative. It’s time to carve your best jack-o’-lantern from one of the many pumpkins to pick from at the Kipling Public Library.

Charla Smyth, librarian at the Kipling branch, invites all ages to take part in the library’s pumpkin contest.

“Essentially my idea was just to have people come and take a pumpkin home and then just be creative,” says Smyth.

Creativity doesn’t look the same for everyone so not everyone is going to want to carve a pumpkin. Maybe you’ll want to bake something or draw or paint right onto the pumpkin and decorate it for Halloween.

Thanks goes out to Jim and Shirley Toth who donated 40 pumpkins. The couple say they have an abundance of pumpkins planted to keep the raccoons out of their garden.

“It will end up being a draw prize rather than a contest,” explains Smyth. “Once the draw

is made there will be an age appropriate gift awarded.”

It’s meant to be fun.

Bake it, carve it, paint it, cook it.

“I think there’s a lot of interest in the pumpkin contest,” says Smyth.

Stop in at the Kipling Library starting

Oct. 26 to pick up your pumpkin and send in your photos by Nov. 1.

This is a great time to decorate your pumpkin for your own Halloween display at home.

“Please don’t bring all the pumpkins back to me unless it’s baked into something delicious,” laughs Smyth.

“Otherwise the library has been busy with programs and people are wanting to do more programs,” explains Smyth. “It’s been so exciting.”

“We were doing a lot of take ‘n make projects.”

“In September we decided to go ahead and

do some in-person projects,” explains Smyth, who then added, “and people have really been on board with that.”

“It’s not huge crowds of people that are coming because not everyone is comfortable with that yet.”

“We did a Plant a Seed Read at the end of September and it was really fun because that was our first in-person children’s program so it was so fun to do stories together and have the kids plant their vegetable seeds. Kids were encouraged to plant a seed and watch it grow.”

The group would talk about gardening, teaching the children about planting their own food and then what to do with the produce once it’s ready to be harvested and what to do with it thereafter.

“The goal is to get the kids thinking about growing their own gardens down the road,” explains Smyth.

Arcola’s Mac Murray Theatre opens for the season Submitted by Gord Paulley The Mac Murray Theatre has opened its doors for another year and the Observer caught with Arcola Optimist Club president Blake Brownridge for an interview.

The Optimist Club, which was formed in Arcola in 1982, consists of 30 members and has operated the theatre since the early 1990s.

Jeff Bohnert is vicepresident and Glen Lawson is its secretarytreasurer.

“The theatre is an important part of our heritage,” said Brownridge.

“It was operated privately for many years and then, some 30 years ago, our club decided to take it on as an ongoing project.

We did a major renovation back then and then around 10 years ago, added new seating and a digital projector.

“Both the front lobby and upstairs were renovated back in 2016.

The Arcola Optimist Club has contributed over $300,000 to theatre upgrades over the years and thousands of hours of volunteer labour. We have also partnered with the Arcola High School SRC to supply manpower and keep our students involved in the commu-

nity. In turn, our club provides them with an annual donation.”

The “Mac” has movies every Friday and Saturday night from Thanksgiving to Victoria Day weekends and has a seating capacity of 210. It is also used by many community and school drama groups and for the annual Remembrance Day service. Live country music concerts, which were to begin this month, have been deferred to the new year due to health restrictions.

All those that attend must be double vaccinated as per provincial and town guidelines.

To ensure a smooth operation, the theatre requires six crews of 6 volunteers.

To date, they only have five. If you are willing to volunteer your time, please contact Brownridge at 306-577-9904.

While many readers of the Observer have attended a movie or show at the Mac, there are many that have not. It is an impressive facility, and one that Arcola and area should be extremely proud of.

Carlyle Legion recognizes members for years of service

Although it was a regular meeting, it had an element that made it very special.

They honoured a number of those peo-

ple who have served for many years. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, they had to meet wearing masks and had to recognize people this year who reached significant milestones in the past several years.

Those recognized were presented with medals and pins by Carlyle branch presi-

dent Nedra Clark, who is also the Saskatchewan Zone 1 commander.

Lyle Basken received recognition for 50 years of service, although this year is actually his 51st year.

Clareen Makelki received recognition for 45 years of service, although this year is actually her 48th year..

Wendy Rounce and Harvey Rounce each received recognition for 20 years of service.

Darren Simons was saluted for 15 years of service, and Dianne Wilson received recognition for five years.

It is important to recognize that between these eight Legion members, they have served the community and local veterans for in excess of 200 years.

Hearty congratulations and many thanks to all those honoured.

The Royal Canadian Legion is a service group dedicated to aiding and support-

ing members of the community who have served in the armed forces, and various police forces.

All legion members take that responsibility very seriously, and therefore find it important to recognize and honour those who have fulfilled those responsibilities for many years.

Supreme Ambulance - important first responders Submitted by Gord Paulley Dana and Rae Fenwick have been owneroperators of Supreme Ambulance in Carlyle since 1987, when they purchased their business from Lew Oatway.

The company is one of only a handful of ambulance services in southern Saskatchewan that is still privately owned.

They own two ambulances and have a staff of seven full-time and four casual employees.

Jackie Blaise joined Supreme in 2011 and is their occupation health and safety co-ordinator.

Aaron Patterson has also been employed with Supreme for 10 years and is their longest tenured primary care provider (PCP). He lives in Mortlach.

A minimum of four PCPs must be working in Carlyle 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Fenwicks have seen many changes in healthcare over the years, and

COVID has also added on various additional expenses to their business. Dana advised that a box of disposable gloves in 2019 cost $13; they are now $32.

The Fenwicks have four children, Jayson, Lisa (Morrison), Kara (Bunz) and Jordan, along

with eight grandchildren.

This past March, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Do they have any regrets about moving to Carlyle and raising their family some 34 years ago?

“Not one bit,” said Dana. “We love living in southeastern Saskatchewan and Carlyle is a great place to live and do business.”

Moe faces the crisis he wasn’t expecting

By Murray Mandryk While we all want COVID-19 to be over, it’s likely safe to say no in Saskatchewan wants it to be over more than Premier Scott Moe. And, like virtually all of us, he did think it would be over now.

He clearly didn’t think he would now still be dealing with the deep impact of a global pandemic a year ago this week when daily case counts were in the low double digits and his Saskatchewan Party had just been given an overwhelming mandate for a fourth-term majority government.

He didn’t anticipate still dealing with COVID-19 nine months after the province had just come out what was thought to be the historical peak of daily case counts in the third wave. New miracle vaccines would soon rid of this plague, he and most everyone else thought.

And he surely didn’t think we would be here three months ago when close to 70 per cent of the eligible 12-years-and-older population had receive at least a first dose and the decision was made to end all masking and gathering restrictions.

At that time, it did seem as if we were on the road to recovery — both with COVID-19 and the economy.

At that time, there were about 25,000 more jobs in Saskatchewan than a year early in 2020.

The gradual removal of capacity restrictions in bars and restaurants looked like it was paying off.

And Moe bluntly made it known his government no longer had any interest in the restriction business.

The first week after the July 11 reopening saw just 197 COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan.

Certainly, there were medical professionals warning him that 70 per cent with their first dose would not be nearly enough to ward off the coming Delta variant in the fourth wave.

And, certainly, Moe was encouraging people to get vaccinated, even suggesting that a simple prick in the arm was hardly the equivalent of storming the beaches at Normandy.

But with a coming federal election and the seeming interest in Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada that shunned required vaccine passports or any other added restrictions, staunch conservatives like Moe really had no interest in going any further with restrictions than they already had.

In short, while Moe encourage vaccination, he had no interest in vaccine passport requirements that have since resulted in the vaccinehesitant getting vaccinated.

Unfortunately for Moe and all of us, warnings came to fruition. We haven’t been below 197 cases in a single day since mid-August.

And while there were only 53 people in hospital (the lowest total since Dec. 1) at that point, there are now around 350 people in Saskatchewan hospitals with COVID-19 and 84 in ICUs – so many that the government last week had to start shipping them out-of-province because we cannot no longer properly care for our sickest people.

Harping on bad COVID-19 numbers does sound like a broken record. My apologies.

But the reality is we are in a health care crisis right now because we didn’t prepare for the reality that the numbers would rise after the July 11 reopening.

Hoping this would all be over hasn’t been enough.

Time to have the tacky conversation

Shelley Luedtke “She got herself into it so no one needs to feel bad for her. It’s her own fault,” stated an indignant listener after hearing a young woman share her story of failing to understand the financing charges on a major purchase she had made.

The listener continued, “I don’t feel one bit sorry for her. How could she not know?”

Well, she didn’t know, and that was the problem. It was also the reason she was going through a public, and rather humiliating, mea culpa. She wanted her story to alert others to the mistake she had made.

There has long been a social stigma in talking about finances. There are questions that just shouldn’t be asked. Information that shouldn’t be shared.

Talking about money is tacky.

To be sure there are times when some things shouldn’t be said, but unfortunately, opportunities for learning are

not being capitalized on.

As a consequence, many don’t know or understand enough and that has led to confusion, mismanagement, and way too much shame surrounding money. Why is it so hard to talk about?

A financial writer was taken off guard when her young son asked how much money she made.

She realized that while she was well-versed in financial information, talking to her own child about money was something else entirely. She wrote a series of books for children after discovering too many parents simply don’t talk to their kids about money, and consequently they don’t develop good financial literacy skills.

Some parents feel they’re not good role models and an even larger group say they don’t understand enough and so lack the confidence to teach their kids. The sad result, she said, is that instead of making $20 mistakes when they’re younger, too many are making $20,000 mistakes as adults.

Different generations approach money in different ways, and sometimes those financial habits have unfairly characterized an entire generation. These ones spend recklessly. These don’t spend enough. This group is all about experiences versus stuff. This

group will never own a home. This group worries about their savings. This group doesn’t save.

While generalizations are never good in any situation, when it comes to finances some of these broad-based assumptions are not only untrue, but they are unfairly pitting generations against one another. Savers versus spenders. Hard workers versus the less motivated. Planners versus dreamers. On it goes.

And it’s simply not the reality.

The truth is that while different generations do handle money differently, instead of pitting one against the other, imagine what could be accomplished if we learned from each other instead.

Because the issues that most face, regardless of generation, are the same.

Issues that some young ones identified.

A panel of children was assembled and told they could ask whatever they wanted to know about money. Their questions were insightful.

They asked how long they should keep their piggy bank, how they could give money away, and how someone should decide to buy something or not.

They got it exactly right— even if they didn’t realize it.

Yes, it gets more sophisticated as we get older but the bottom line is we

need to put money away.

Yet a significant portion of millennials and baby boomers are putting away less than recommended.

How about giving money away? Baby Boomers are the biggest contributors to charity, although the older and smaller silent generation are a significant force in giving.

The ones coming behind aren’t currently donating at the same level and this is causing concern. And as for determining whether a purchase should be made? That is often at the heart of it. Distinguishing between needs and wants. That one is cutting straight across generational lines.

Is it tacky to talk about money? Well, it’s worse not to. Financial planners say we aren’t spending nearly enough time discussing money or how to handle it, and it shows. But there’s no reason we can’t change that.

November is Financial Literacy Month in Canada, a time to focus on establishing healthy financial habits. Maybe it could be the perfect time to sit down with someone of a different generation and start the conversation. Learning what they did right … and learning from what they did wrong … .is a great step forward.

If it’s true money talks, let’s be sure we’re talking about it the right way.

That’s my outlook.

Southeast athletes compete at cross-country provincials Numerous athletes from the southeast corner of the province competed at the recent cross-country provincials, hosted by the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association.

Mitch Himmelspach was the lone athlete from the Gordon F. Kells High School in Carlyle to compete. He posted a time of 20:51 to finish 31st in senior boys.

Numerous other athletes from the southeast competed at provincials.

Among those in senior girls were Mackenzie Miller of Oxbow Prairie Horizons School, who recorded a time of 20:32; Lindsey Johnson of Lampman School, 20:49; Gabrielle Brisebois of École de Bellegarde, 23:07; Corey Purves, Carnduff Education Complex, 23:19; Yveian Orpiano, Stoughton School, 23:29; Jenna Bates, Arcola

School, 23:34; and Adrie Frazer, Oxbow Prairie Horizons School, 24:03.

In senior boys, competitors included Carter Goudy, Stoughton School, 21:17; Dylan Frey, Oxbow Prairie Horizon School, 22:19; Dustin Chassie, Arcola School, 22:33; Jed Centeno, Stoughton School, 23:12; and Tomas Lonethunder, White Bear Education Complex, 26:35.

In junior girls, Shalyn Urschel of École de Bellegarde had a time of 24:43.

In junior boys, among the entrants were Tye Farnsworth of Lampman School, who finished with a time of 19:21; Cédric Akpalé, École de Bellegarde, 19:53; Levi Donahue, Arcola School, 20:35; and Ethan Lees, Arcola School, 20:45.

In intermediate girls, a couple of students from the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School were entered: Alivia

Schulhauser had a time of 14:28 and Mary Lee McNeil finished in 15:38.

In intermediate boys, four students from Oxbow Prairie Horizons School entered: Dorian Sifton, who finished with a time of 11:58; Aldwin Casi, 11:59; Jace Carritt, 12:26; and Lincoln Spencer, 12:41.

Also entered were Fynn Wilson from Wawota Parkland School, who had a time of 13:06, Carter Branvold of Wawota Parkland School, 13:09, Dathan Beaudet of Manor, 13:12; and Benjamin Brisebois, École de Bellegarde, 13:26.

The intermediates ran three kilometres, the juniors competed on a fourkilometre circuit and the seniors had a five-kilometre distance.

The site for provincials was a cross-country ski course about 15 kilometres outside of Humboldt.

Local fire departments - here to protect your community Submitted by Gord Paulley Nearly every community in Saskatchewan has a local fire department and the southeast is no exception. In recognition of our first responders, The Observer has been in contact with four volunteer fire departments in the area and have provided some information.

Manor/RM of Moose Mountain: Fire Chief Brayden Rowley advised they have a record 25 male and three female volunteers. All equipment is in excellent condition and they recently purchased a used 1999 Fort Garry GMC Pumper from a fire department in the Northwest Territory.

Training is often done together with the Carlyle and Redvers

teams. Their Facebook page is Manor & RM 63 Fire Department. Rowley is the site administrator.

Redvers: Chief Brad Hutton indicated that they have 21 volunteers including three women.

Three of their firefighters are first responders. The Redvers Fire Department also specializes in farm safety including grain bin, cold water and ice , and confined space rescues.

Their Facebook page is Redvers Volunteer Fire Department. Hutton and Breanne Barber are the page administrators.

Alameda/RM of Moose Creek: We spoke with Deputy Fire Chief DeWayne Henderson.

They have 15 male and two female volunteers, five of which are first responders. Their fire hall is located in Alameda. The

Alameda firefighters initiated the annual firefighters’ rodeo some five years ago. Their Facebook page is Alameda/RM of Moose Creek Fire Department.

Henderson is the administrator.

Carlyle: Deputy Fire Chief Rob Klassen advised that they presently have 20 members including one long-time dedicated female volunteer, Michelle Orsted. Of course they are pleased to be able to work and train out of their new fire hall built last year on Eighth Street West. This past weekend the Carlyle department hosted a farm safety rescue seminar, with Carnduff, Redvers, and Alameda fire departments also participating.

Klassen is also pleased to announce that Carlyle is hosting the next

Precision Ag announces expansion plans in Carnduff Submitted by Gord Paulley Precision Ag is expanding with the addition of a new fertilizer facility at their Carnduff location.

The Observer spoke with Precision Ag general manager Jody Magotiaux, who provided some details.

“Precision Ag is ex-

panding its footprint in the agricultural industry, and a $4 million upgrade to its Carnduff facility will begin soon,” said Magotiaux. “This facility will have the capability to offer our leading-edge CORE and traditional crop nutrition products and will be equipped with liquid micronutrient impregnation.

“This will enhance our ability to deliver customized, high-performance crop nutrition programs to our growers to help them grow successfully. Our outload speed will increase significantly to get our customers back in the field quickly.”

Precision Ag plans to use local trades and labourers as much as pos-

sible during the construction of the Carnduff plant, supporting the local community and surrounding businesses. Up to three full-time positions will be added after the facility is complete, which is expected to be spring of 2022.

Earlier this year, Precision Ag owners Jay Gerry, Greg Gerry and

Dan Reaves announced that they would sell their share of the business to Cargill after a successful 22-year joint venture.

Precision Ag operates four locations in southeast Saskatchewan; Griffin, Odessa, Carlyle and Carnduff.

Precision Ag was founded in 1994, opening its original location in

Griffin. The Carnduff location was constructed in 2003 and currently employs three full-time staff.

Cargill has made other significant announcements in Canada in 2021 including plans to construct a $340 million dollar canola crushing plant in Regina. Worldwide, Cargill has 155,000 employees in 70 countries.

New fertilizer facility at Carnduff Coming this spring

Our new and improved Carnduff facility will offer a lineup of leading edge CORE and traditional fertilizer products along with a range of micronutrients and nitrogen stabilizers designed for farms in southern Saskatchewan. All this with significantly faster load times to get you back in the field quickly.

Members of CUPE 5430 sign hospital closure petition in Redvers Submitted by Gord Paulley

Several members of CUPE Local 5430 visited Redvers, supporting fellow health care providers in regards to acute care emergency services being discontinued at the Redvers Health Centre since Sept. 24.

CUPE represents over 14,000 health care providers in the Province of Saskatchewan, including licensed practical nurses, lab technicians, dietary, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, librarians, security, EMRs, clerical and other support care employees.

The Observer had the op-

portunity to talk to many of the CUPE members in attendance including president Sandra Seitz of Weyburn.

“Rural health care is in a very precarious position”, said Seitz.

“Across the province, there have been many health centres being closed for various reasons, with promises of being reopened unfulfilled. In the case of Redvers, emergency services are now only available in Arcola, Brandon, and Kipling, or up to 90 minutes away. This is totally unacceptable and the provincial government must do something to alleviate this problem.”

Seitz also added, “The reduc-

tions in acute and emergency health services has not just happened because of COVID, this has been an ongoing issue for years.

The provincial government must be held accountable. Recruitment and retention needs to be a priority for the government in order to provide rural health care services to the residents of Saskatchewan.”

Petitions have been circling around Redvers and signatures are being accepted at the Redvers Health Centre, library, and the Town of Redvers office on Railway Avenue. At the present time, there is no expected reopening The Town of Redvers is presently without emergency date. health services.

Congratulations to Liam and of course to her parents Justin and Kara McNish, as well as to her grandparents Tim and Trudy Boettcher and greatgrandparents Jim and Mary Boettcher.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Jean Ball on the

death of her daughter Candis Burley on Oct. 13 at the age of 45 years at a hospital in Victoria, B.C. Candis will always be remembered by her mother Jean, brothers Aaron, Kenny and Garrett (Natasha), as well as her children Hunter, Cole and Tabyn.

She was predeceased by her dad, Garnet (Sept.3/21), grandparents, Ernie/Edie Ball, and Melvin/Dorothy Loseth. No other details are known at this time.

This coming weekend is the first couple of evenings for the 2021 Alida Haunted House and the murder-mystery room. All our ghosts, ghouls, witches, clowns, eerie scary creatures, etc. have arrived and are almost settled into their domain and of course are ready to welcome you all to their haunted dwellings at the Alida Rink.

yourself to tour through the haunted halls of terror, only if you are, of course. Just a reminder that some COVID rules apply – must be vaccinated, have proof of vaccination and wear a mask. All of our volunteers and spooks are vaccinated and wearing a mask.

that will allow you to escape the room.

If you’re unable to visit us now, don’t fret or worry, just come sometime during the last three days of October.

Don’t forget the annual fun fair is also on Sunday afternoon for all our young people to come visit – have lots of fun and try their luck at all the games available. There’s also things for adults to do, or have a cup of coffee and visit with others. Prizes and treats for all.

Remember to wear your Halloween costume too.

The haunted house guests will not be there during the fun fair and lights are always on for anyone who may wish to tour the area while the spooks are all asleep.

Seraphine, late of Redvers, SK, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin, SK at the age of 93 years.

Seraphine was predeceased by her husband Emile; parents, Joseph and Elvire Martin; siblings, Louise (Gerard) Talbot, Desiree (Benoit) Fortier and Jules (Lena) Martin.

Seraphine will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Linda (Don) Akins and son Paul (Elaine) Rogg; grandchildren, Tracy, Melissa, Ryan, Kevin, Karen; 14 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and 1 brother Henry (Marcia) Martin.

The Funeral Mass for Seraphine was held on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Redvers, with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding. Interment took place at the Redvers Town Cemetery with the luncheon following at the parish hall.

Raising funds for the Arcola Health Centre laboratory services Submitted by Gord Paulley

Life has not been a

bowl of cherries for any employees of the Saskatchewan Health Authority and for the lab

staff at the Arcola Health Centre, they are not an exception. Kim Penney and her co-workers learned some time ago that that their complete blood count (CBC) blood testing machine is on its last legs. Testing blood is an extremely important part of medicine and this machine determines one’s complete white blood cell count, and the amount of red blood cells and platelets in your body.

This test is usually the first indication of infection or illness. A new blood testing unit with an interface compatible with the laboratory information system costs $20,000.

RM of Enniskillen acquires land for health and wellness centre The Rural Municipality of Enniskillen has acquired property at 119 Railway Avenue in Oxbow.

This acquisition will allow the RM to work with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Galloway Health Centre to promote and create a primary health and wellness centre for the residents of Oxbow and all neighbouring rural communities.

“The reeve and council are pleased to announce the collaboration of this new facility,” said RM administrator Pamela Bartlett. “This partnership is greatly needed to ensure that our community stays viable. This collaboration with the health authority and health centre will also ensure that the needs of our local emergency medical re-

sponders and primary care paramedics will be met through adequate housing, transportation, training, and office space.

“By acquiring the property at 119 Railway Avenue, it will finally allow the community of Oxbow the opportunity to create a health and wellness centre. Our goal is to have as many health professionals as possible in a centralized location, providing the best care for our residents.

“Our hope is to have the primary health and wellness centre open and operational by December 6, 2021. Our goal is to partner with health professionals – home care, mental health, public health, dietitian, physio, addictions, telehealth, and hopefully one day to in-

clude massage, natural and holistic care and other important essential services housed under one roof. There will also be a space for the new handi-van to be kept indoors.”

Work will begin immediately to start the renovation process to ensure all necessary accommodations and retrofits are completed.

If anyone is interested in contributing to this venture, through monetary donations or new furnishings for the bedrooms and kitchen, or would like to know more information about renting a space, they can contact the RM. Tax-deductible donations will be issued for all monetary contributions.

The RM also saluted Alan Gay for his generosity towards this new partnership.

It was no fee day at the Carlyle Transfer Station this past Saturday, and the Carlyle location was extremely busy. The landfill is located two kilometres north of Carlyle. Pictured is long-time Town of Carlyle employee Dave McDonell. “I have manned the gate at this landfill for nearly 20 years. I like the job and it keeps me busy. I really enjoy talking to the people.” McDonell turns 91 this April and enjoys good health. He has been a fixture at the landfill for many years and a lot of people know him.
