The community of Windthorst and beyond show their support for the late Adrienne Hambleton and her boys

Here’s to Adrienne Hambleton!

She was a mother dedicated to her two sons, Kaden and Lucas; daughter, sister, friend, co-worker and a person you’ll never forget.

Sadly, she passed away days after a tragic accident.

A lunch fundraiser was held at Norm’s Place in Windthorst on Saturday afternoon with more than 175 people coming out to show their support for Lucas and Kaden Ward and in honour of their late mom Adrienne Hambleton. Money raised totaling just over $6,000 will be donated to a trust fund for the boys.

The afternoon started out with more than 25 people of all ages riding their horses from a farm just outside of town into Windthorst in honour of Adrienne, who rode many miles taking part in trail rides over the years and making many life-long friends along the way.

It was only fitting that the luncheon took place at Norm’s Place since that was

A slideshow was presented throughout the afternoon of photos with many of her close friends.

Hundreds and hundreds photos were sent to be included in the slide show honouring Adrienne.

Adrienne would have

wanted to be remembered like this. Her favourite things in life were her children, her horses and her friends all coming together for a good time.

“This community was Adrienne’s family,” says her cousin Kerrie Smalley. “I can’t thank everyone enough for their love and support.

I’m so proud to see how this community has come together for her and I can see her shining down on all of us.

Kaden and Lucas are going to be well taken of. Thank you to everyone for the love and support.”

New owners for Carlyle R.V. & Leisure

By Gord Paulley Carlyle R.V. & Leisure opened for business back in 1995 and is located just north of Carlyle on the east side of Highway 9.

It has recently experienced a change of ownership and a staffing change. Fifty-fiveyear-old Kelly Dew has been a co-owner for over 27 years. Last month, 45-year-old Chris Poley purchased the shares of longtime owner Ron Mitchell.

Poley is now Dew’s

new partner at Carlyle RV. Kelly and wife Kim have resided in Carlyle for many years. He is the service manager and in charge of all mechanical work and repairs.

Poley is a wellknown livestock auctioneer and owns and operates T-Bar C Cattle Company. Live cattle auctions are held right on site at many Purebred farms in Saskatchewan and other locations in Canada. He managed the Alameda Auction Mart back in

“She was a single mom and tough as nails but she had two rules: have fun and get along,” explains Skibinski.

“For me and my staff it was a very powerful day,” comments Farnham, owner of Norm’s Place. “We were so happy to see such a large turnout.”

At the present time he spends over 300 days on the road and will not be active in the Carlyle R.V. day-today operations. Recent onsite cattle auctions were held near Arcola, Vibank, Steelman, and Kisbey.

“I am always on the lookout for investing in other businesses. With my family connection at Carlyle R.V. & Leisure, I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity,“ said Poley.

In addition, effective Sept. 1, Joan Seibel has become the general manager of the business, which has eight full-time employees.

Her husband Dave has been employed at Carlyle R.V. for over 15 years.

“After nearly two years of shutdowns and back-orders, we have been busy with customers repairing their existing RVs due to a lack of new product on the floor. Inventory is now starting to arrive and by mid-winter we should have adequate supplies on hand. Our

company is well known in both Saskatchewan and all of Western Canada and we have many loyal, repeat customers. I am really looking forward to working together with Chris and Joan.”

New boutique opens on Main Street in Stoughton

A new business opened in Stoughton earlier this year and is named Rising Moon Collective (RMC).

RMC is located in the former SGI building on Main Street Stoughton. The inside has been totally remodelled to fit the needs of the new store.

Owner Trinity Slykhuis grew up in Carlyle but decided to make the move to the bit slower paced, smaller community of Stoughton.

What made her decide to open her own store?

“I’m originally from Carlyle so when I was younger I liked to shop at King’s Department Store, and I commented then to my mom ‘that’s what I want to do when I’m older…own a clothing store’ because I like fashion,” she said.

“When I moved to Stoughton two years ago I realized there wasn’t much here in the way of a clothing store so I decided ‘why not?’

“You need to take chances,” says Slykhuis.

“Don’t regret it later in life that you didn’t try.”

She explains that her parents are very supportive of anything that she wants to do. She had lots of encouragement and support from her parents to follow her dreams.

“They always back me up on everything,” says Slykhuis.

Slykhuis says she may have been a bit hesitant about opening up a store during COVID but she says she just decided to jump into it and get it going.

“People are wanting to support local businesses,” explains Slykhuis, “and I wanted to support the community.”

Slykhuis hopes her business and services will bring additional shoppers to the community.

“Because people aren’t able to travel to the city as much, I thought it would be a good opportunity.”

Where did she get

the idea for the name of her business?

“I like spiritual things and astrology so that ties in with the name. I just like the colour black. So it came from the rising sun and the moon and the collective is a term to describe the store.”

“My friend and I actually thought of a name before the business even came about.”

The main focus of the store is men’s and women’s clothing although there are many other things offered, including jewelry, bath salts and scrubs.

“Our candles and hair scrunchies are all locally handmade.”

Other than clothing, RMC offers many services at the location as well.

Slykhuis has been ‘lashing’ for the past two years already after taking a Lash Tech course and says she really loves doing this.

Other services offered at RMC include piercings, teeth whitening, and a spiritual lady – intuitive, energy reader, medium, shaman and channeller.

Slykhuis says she’s heard many comments that people are liking it because they don’t have to travel to the city for these services now.

Carter Morrison - a sport for every season

By Gord Paulley Usually, when one reports on Carlyle’s Carter Morrison for his athletic prowess, the sport of golf comes to mind.

Morrison is an accomplished golfer and can give anyone a good game. Earlier this month, he competed in a table tennis tournament and that is why we interviewed him for this story.

Morrison has played the game for many years and has a great operation set up in his basement, including a table tennis robot. With the assistance of Table Tennis Saskatchewan, Morrison was able to enter a Canadian Paralympics sanctioned event in Toronto.

Together with his parents Trevor and Lisa Morrison, Carter arrived at the facility and immediately had issues.

“First of all, they asked me if I had brought a coach. I hadn’t. Then, they told me, you can’t wear a white shirt when you play in a tournament, it hides the ball.

My mom scrambled and

found me a pink one.”

Things then settled down after that inauspicious start. Carter Morrison played six best of five single matches that Saturday and another four doubles matches on Sunday. He held his own among the 20 or so participants that represented nearly every province across Canada.

Morrison is short statured and his disability is graded a six on a scale of one to 11. (1-5 is wheel-chaired, those ranked 6-10 have some type of physical disabil-

ity, and the rank of 11 is for the intellectually disabled.)

Morrison was the only athlete representing Saskatchewan and personally wanted to thank his parents and president Paul Noel of the Saskatchewan Table Tennis Association for allowing him to compete. Added Morrison: “I tried my best, but you know, the competition was tough and I just didn’t practise enough over the summer. I really had trouble defending side spin that I don’t see

much of here at home.

I did, however, learn a lot at this competition and will become a better player because of it. I really enjoyed it.”

Morrison, who graduates from high school this June, loves table tennis and it is his personal goal to participate in the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile. His dad Trevor also plans on forming a table tennis club in Carlyle this winter. Watch for details in upcoming issues of the Observer.

Slykhuis says she loves everything about owning and running her own business.

“It’s nice visiting with people and meeting so many new people.”

When Slykhuis isn’t at the store she enjoys spending time camping and just spending time with her three-year-old daughter Oaklyn and other family members

who are mostly around the Carlyle area, or going to the gym and working out.

RMC is open five days a week, Tuesday to Saturday.

Slykhuis has much more planned for her store but the community will just have to wait and see what happens next.

She’s not ready to ‘spill the beans’ on that news.

Moe can’t ignore COVID-19 reality

By Murray Mandryk It wasn’t so much the rah-rah nature of Premier Scott Moe’s State of the Province address to the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce.

All politicians everywhere deliver these speeches in which they wax on about all the positives of the jurisdictions they represent. We hear them from all governments of all stripes.

Really, throne speeches are little more than a reminder of all the things we should be proud of in this province. And, notwithstanding all our problems in Saskatchewan including COVID-19, there is a lot to be proud of.

But the first problem with Moe’s speech is that — even as one meant for a business audience like a chamber of commerce — it seemed to go out of its way to either ignore or downplay the realities of the fourth wave of this pandemic.

Even if Moe felt the need for an uplifting address to business types on our economic successes and potential, he needed to seriously address the impact of COVID-19. Spending four minutes during a 36-minute speech to basically tell us what his government is doing is working right now just didn’t fly.

This was an address Moe knew would be heard by a lot of people other than Saskatoon business leaders.

Timing is everything in politics and Moe couldn’t have picked a much worse time or venue to downplay the pandemic.

The premier’s Health Minister Paul Merriman had just received a 1,500-word letter signed by all 21 medical health officers urging the government to re-instate temporary measures to deal with this fourth wave of COVID-19.

“The Medical Health Officers of Saskatchewan (MHOs) would like to express our continued and growing concern about the current state of COVID-19 in our province and the lack of effectiveness of the current public health measures to bring about the rapid reduction in cases needed to take the unprecedented pressure off our health system,” the MHOs wrote, adding that the government’s decision to ignore their previous Aug. 26 letter “has resulted in a much larger fourth wave, which will therefore require a return to stronger restrictions to bring it under control.”

Worse for Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government, the letter bluntly stated that a recent reduction in daily case counts Moe touted in his chamber speech as evidence we are winning the COVID-19 battle “do not tell the full story” because Saskatchewan has few tests and a high test positivity rates.

In a month where we are likely to see our highest number of COVID-19-related deaths and at a time when the province is forced to transfer critically ill ICU patients to Ontario because our hospitals can no longer handle the numbers, it’s hard to accuse the CMOs of overreacting.

Yet neither Moe nor Merriman’s office properly addressed the concerns raised in the CMO’s letter in any forum.

This takes us to the biggest problem with Moe’s speech and his government right now.

While his speech was very much a pitch as to why people should come to Saskatchewan, it drew a lot of angry response from doctors and other health care providers threatening to leave this province because of a government they say doesn’t take their health care concerns seriously.

Maybe they’re just threats, but frustrating doctors seldom works out well for governments, especially here in Saskatchewan.

Moe needs a better COVID-19 response.

Positive speeches on the economy are not addressing the problem.

When coins were king on Halloween

Shelley Luedtke Pumpkins and autumn leaves have been joined by ghosts and jacko’-lanterns in anticipation of events on Oct. 31.

Halloween was impacted by the pandemic last year and that remains the case again this year, but adding to that complication is suspicion that some places are going to see much more property damage than in previous years.

School districts in Canada and the United States are warning parents they are going to crack down on Halloween vandalism and will not hesitate calling in police, particularly as social media challenges up the ante.

Several students were arrested in the first weeks of school after participating in the last challenge and now face charges for vandalism, stealing, assaulting school staff members, criminal trespass, interference with government property and criminal mischief. Dis-

trict authorities are letting it be known they plan to take Halloween pranks very seriously.

The challenge that resulted in so much damage across schools early on this fall is from the same app that encouraged the Benadryl challenge (to trigger hallucinations), the black-out challenge (used to be known as the choke game), the tooth filing challenge (yes filing, not filling), the full face wax, the skull breaker challenge, shock collar challenge and on it goes.

While many of these challenges encourage young people to do something crazy to themselves (resulting in countless injuries and sadly, a handful of deaths) now it’s become about stealing items and damaging property.

“People are getting hurt. They’re breaking the law. Too many were going to the hospital, and now they’re going to jail,” a law enforcement officer remarked.

Since social media clout is the currency young people are seeking, it’s no wonder there is greater concern this Halloween. But do you remember a time when a different currency was a focal point this time of year?

Until 2006 many children took part in collecting money for UNICEF while they were out trick or treating. When the familiar little orange

boxes made their appearance you knew you could participate in something unique to this time of year. One of the things we always did was check the back of the box where there was a brief description detailing what a few coins could buy for a child in another part of the world. We could see the difference we could make with those boxes.

I remember at my house my mom would have a bowl full of coins sitting beside the bowl full of candy, ready to hand out both.

That orange box campaign was discontinued after it was determined that the time it took to deal with the coins wasn’t worth the amount collected any longer. Some parents had concerns about their child’s safety while walking around with money. Not unrelated was UNICEF’s own desire to re-brand their image to more fully communicate the work they were doing around the world.

Those factors in combination brought an end to all those orange boxes on doorsteps Hallowe’en night.

As authorities brace for what they suspect could be a more destructive event, it may cause some of us to become nostalgic about our costume-wearing, coin collecting younger selves but let’s be honest.

foolish mischief and yes, damaging pranks, have been a part of the story for a long, long time. The difference now is the urgency to get it on video to attract the attention of a global audience. The pressure to amass clicks and views is unrelenting.

As a result, many are willing to take on the danger and cause the damage in an effort to make their mark in the arena where they want to be influential.

Meanwhile, too many children around the world are denied what we simply take for granted. The 2021 UNICEF report on the state of the world’s children says we are paying a high price for what they are calling lost human potential; almost $400 billion dollars when children don’t get protected and cared for.

UNICEF runs programs online and in schools and so the fundraising opportunity has most definitely remained.

It’s just taken on a different form. Looking for ways to engage all of us in doing more around the world is where we should feel the sense of urgency.

Organizations that work with children say there seems to be good awareness of what the needs are. The challenge is taking that awareness and turning it into dollars.

Now that’s a challenge we could all get behind.

That’s my outlook.

Carlyle athletes part of football championship

Carlyle Curling Club is ready to rock

By Gord Paulley This past weekend, the Estevan Coldwell Banker Choice Real Estate U12 Chargers football team won their league championship, defeating the Moose Jaw Spartans by a score 27-0. Two of their players live in Carlyle and the Observer had the opportunity to talk to their coach Matt Schell.

Schell, who is from Lampman, has coached the team the past three years and this year they added James Haagsman from Estevan as their defensive co-ordinator. The Chargers play in a fourteam league and finished the regular season with a 5-1 record. They have 25 male and female players, residing in towns including Carlyle, Bienfait, Hitchcock, Oxbow and Carnduff, and of course Estevan. It is nine-man football.

The club itself has also decided on full vaccination so that masks do not have to be worn on the playing surface.

On Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, the club is welcoming all existing and prospective curlers to come out and throw a few rocks.

This event is called “wobble week.” Regular Thursday night curling starts Nov. 4 and Monday nights begin Nov. 8. On Friday nights, the club is going to try a family doubles night starting at 7 p.m.

Both Kyle and Lothian are excited about the upcoming season.

“Last year, we only had three weeks of curling and the season was a complete write-off,” said Lothian. “Let’s hope things go better this

year.“ The Carlyle Curling Club consists of approximately 75 members.

They hold their annual family Boxing Day tournament and in early January have an annual cash bonspiel. February brings the Oilmen’s and in early March they hold their annual open bonspiel. A year-ending fun spiel usually takes place St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The curling club held a very successful golf tournament Sept. 25 with 72 golfers participating.

For 2021-22, interest appears high and teams and individuals are already starting to register.

Tougher than breast cancer Nurse navigator support would be beneficial to rural women diagnosed with cancer

Where do you go from here?

Sarah Taylor, who is an RN, chose to write a thesis on women diagnosed with cancer in rural Saskatchewan entitled Rural Women’s Perspectives on Cancer Care in Southern Saskatchewan.

The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of women living with cancer who reside in rural areas in southern Saskatchewan regarding their met and unmet care needs.

The goal of her method interpretive description, was to form a deeper understanding about the experiences of women living in rural Saskatchewan who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Taylor recently made a trip out to a

support group in Moosomin to interview three women and their experiences living with cancer in rural Saskatchewan.

One thing Taylor noticed during her interviews was that people have a lot of empathy. The young people comment ‘I don’t know how anyone that’s older could do this…this is really tough’ and then the older people comment ‘well I don’t know how you do that if you have little people to look after’. Both sides are saying the same thing and truly meaning it.

And her survey showed her that people have a lot of resilience.

Some of her findings include their feelings going from a normal life to chaos. Along with that comes anxiety and worry, loneliness, humour, gratitude and hope.

Growing up in a rural area, Taylor is well aware of how rural women deal with their experience.

Originally from Carievale, Taylor has had a few different roles over her 10-year career as an RN. She was first employed in Estevan for a few years and then at the Cancer Clinic in Regina.

She was teaching nursing and has now moved to a position in managing since moving this past May back to the farm where she grew up.

“One of the findings of my thesis was how a nurse navigator specific to rural women would be beneficial in addressing a lot of the things they told me at the support group.”

Taylor recommends that this role would be beneficial to many rural communities.

Taylor goes on to explain: “One of the biggest findings in my research was that rural women were very resilient and very self-efficient.”

“They all took initiative in finding information even some of that information was hard to come by. One of the other findings is that they use social media as support because there’s not a lot of inperson psychological support in rural areas.”

“Another one of my recommendations was to incorporate social media into health care teaching.”

“I felt because they (rural women) are so self-efficient that if they had that one goto person to help them find information, that would be really beneficial.”

“The social workers at the Cancer Clinic are really good about finding resources for those diagnosed with breast cancer,” explains Taylor.

How to prepare for pregnancy after breast cancer Do you want to become a mother, but were recently diagnosed with breast cancer?

Fortunately, this disease won’t prevent you from getting pregnant once you recover. However, since treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy can affect your fertility, a potential future pregnancy should be considered in your treatment plan.

Talk to your health-care team: Whether you’re certain about one day wanting kids or you simply want to keep the option open, it’s important to discuss this topic with your doctor before you make choices regarding your road to recovery. The first step after you’ve been diagnosed will be to meet with an oncologist to discuss your treatment plan. Preg-

nancy and fertility should also be part of the conversation.

Freeze your eggs: The next step will be to freeze your eggs.

This is because many treatments for breast cancer can make it harder to get pregnant or even trigger early menopause.

Therefore, preserving your eggs is the best way to keep them in good condition and maximize your

Consult a fertility specialist: Once you’ve completed your cancer treatment and recovered, you’ll be able to meet with a specialist to evaluate your fertility level. You’ll learn about your available options and discuss the next steps in the process of becoming a mother.

Emergency Care for Your Pet Unfortunately, accidents do happen. When a medical emergency befalls our furry friends, pet parents may nd it difficult to make rational decisions, especially if something occurs during the middle of the night.

That’s why it’s crucial to have an emergency plan in place—before you need it.

Finding 24-Hour Emergency Care for Your Pet Talk to your veterinarian about an emergency protocol. Does your vet provide 24-hour service or does he or she work with an emergency clinic in the area? Some practices have multiple veterinarians on staff who rotate on-call services after hours. Check to see if your primary care vet has partners who might answer an emergency call. It’s also a smart idea to keep the name, number and address of your local emergency clinic tacked to the refrigerator or stored in your cell phone for easy access.

Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care Your dog may need emergency care because of severe trauma—caused by an accident or fall—choking, heatstroke, an insect sting, household poisoning or other life-threatening situation. Here are some signs that emergency care is needed:  Pale gums  Rapid breathing  Weak or rapid pulse  Change in body temperature  Difficulty standing  Apparent paralysis  Loss of consciousness  Seizures  Excessive bleeding Next Steps Pets who are severely injured may act aggressively toward their pet parents, so it’s important to rst protect yourself from injury.

For dogs: Approach your dog slowly and calmly; kneel down and say his name. If the dog shows aggression, call for help. If he’s passive, fashion a makeshift stretcher and gently lift

him onto it. Take care to support his neck and back in case he’s suffered any spinal injuries.

For cats: Gently place a blanket or towel over the cat’s head to prevent biting; then slowly lift the cat and place her in an open-topped carrier or box. Take care to support the cat’s head and avoid twisting her neck in case she’s suffered a spinal injury.

Once you feel condent and safe transporting your pet, immediately bring him to an emergency care facility. Ask a friend or family member to call the clinic so the staff knows to expect you and your pet.

First Aid Treatments to Perform At Home Most emergencies require immediate veterinary care, but rst aid methods may help you stabilize your pet for transportation.  If your pet is suffering from external bleeding due to trauma, try elevating and applying pressure to the wound.  If your pet is choking, place your ngers in his mouth to see if you can remove the blockage.  If you’re unable to remove the foreign object, perform a modied Heimlich maneuver by giving a sharp rap to his chest, which should dislodge the object.

Performing CPR on Your Pet CPR may be necessary if your pet remains unconscious after you have removed the choking object. First check to see if he’s breathing. If not, place him on his side and perform articial respiration by extending his head and neck, holding his jaws closed and blowing into his nostrils once every three seconds. (Ensure no air escapes between your mouth and the pet’s nose.) If you don’t feel a heartbeat, incorporate cardiac massage while administering articial respiration—three quick, rm chest compressions for every respiration—until your dog resumes breathing on his own.

Construction of the PIC Carlyle Atlas Hog Barn facility progressing well

By Gord Paulley Construction of a multi-million dollar hog barn facility 12 kilometres southeast of Carlyle continues.

The Observer caught up with Pig Improvement Company (PIC) assistant project manager Abdoul Teuw, who provided an update.

“Construction is right on schedule,” said Teuw. “The north barn is now enclosed and work has commenced on the interior walls. This is our gestation barn and in fact the sows that will be housed there are already at our PIC Aurora Kipling location. We expect this first barn to be opened in early February.”

PIC is building five barns and an office, and will eventually have a farm residence

on site. Once the complete farrow to finish operation is underway, over 30 full-time jobs will be created. In addition, the foundation to the quarantine barn located seven kilometres west of Carlyle has been poured and construction there has also started.

The semi-tractor truck wash, which will be located just west of Carlyle between Carlyle Contracting Services and the EZ Car Wash, will be completed later next spring.

Teuw has been pleased with the progress of construction.

“To construct a facility of this size and expense, a lot of agencies must be in agreement. Thank-you to the RM of Moose Mountain, the Town of Carlyle, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Sask.

Stoughton Feed Processors is the major feed supplier for PIC and its Kipling and Carlyle locations.

“PIC is our largest customer and we are pleased to announce construction has commenced on increasing our feed processing facility,“ said general manager Greg Goudy.

“This will employ additional staff and truck drivers for Stoughton and area.”

Young entrepreneurs open a new oilfield business

Three friends in their early 20s in the Carlyle area have started a new business serving the oilpatch and other sectors.

Copperhead Energy Services Ltd. is owned

by Colby Himmelspeck, Jace Fischer and Jayden Currie. Since it opened up in early October, it has been busy with a number of projects in the region, including some work in Estevan.

“We saw that oil was starting to pick up here, and three of us got together,” said Himmelspeck.

Steaming and washing are chief among the services they offer. When it comes to steaming, if the pipes at an oil site are frozen up, they will use hot water from a nozzle to warm them up and allow service to resume.

“It unthaws them, and lets whatever’s froze up to pass through,” said Himmelspeck.

In terms of washing, Copperhead Energy uses a pump with a boiler, which allows them to rival a pressure washer. The three of them purchased a special foam to allow them to wash equipment and anything else.

“Lots of farmers use it, and they’ve said noth-

ing but good things,” said Himmelspeck.

The three have been close friends for some time. Himmelspeck had another business operating, and Fischer and Currie came to him for advice. He decided to enter another business venture, thanks in large part to their friendship.

Lots of local companies have reached out to them for support, including some farmers, because their business extends to agriculture. If a company needs a steamer or a water truck, they will be there.

“Local companies have been really awesome by reaching out.

They want to give us work and support,” said Himmelspeck.

Fischer said they had been talking about going into business for about six months, and decided now was the time to forge ahead.

“We started going through documents of how things can get started. We knew a bunch of people who had done stuff like this, so it was nice to get their side of the story and start it up,” said Fischer.

Customers have been happy with their work, Fischer said. The equipment has worked

out well.

Fischer said cleaning is the most important service they have to provide.

They can carry 1,600 gallons of water, which usually covers them for the full day. Their services are important because people need to keep their equipment clean, and they need someone to respond if equipment freezes up.

Currie hopes things will pick up in the winter time. He’s glad to be operating with his pals.

“We all see eye to eye.

That typically helps in a business,” said Currie.

White Bear resident arrested on drug and firearms charges One person is facing numerous charges after a search warrant was executed Thursday at a residence on the White Bear First Nation.

Officers from the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Regina Crime Reduction Team, the Carlyle RCMP detachment and the Combined Traffic Services of Saskatchewan executed the

search warrant.

The RCMP says officers located and seized 36.24 grams of cocaine packaged into 68 small bags, along with two illegally modified firearms, drug trafficking paraphernalia and cash.

Jaymes Bigstone, a 24-year-old man from White Bear, was arrested at the residence and charged with one count

each of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He is also charged with one count each of possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000 and unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon or restricted weapon; and two counts

each of unsafe storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition readily available without licence/registration. All of those charges are under the Criminal Code.

He will appear in court on Nov. 24.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Heritage Saskatchewan winners have SE connections Heritage Saskatchewan has announced the winners of the 2021 Heritage Awards, and there are a couple of recipients with local connections.

In the Intangible Cultural Heritage category, Garrick Schmidt, an educator from the White Bear Education Complex, won for his Land Based Learning and Southeastern Sas-

katchewan project.

Marieke De Roos, a communications coordinator with Heritage Saskatchewan, said Schmidt is a perfect example of demonstrating intangible cultural heritage. It encompasses stories, skills, traditions, ways of doing things, ways of speaking and methods of interacting with each other in the environment.

“It is our heritage, but expressed in ways that are not material to us, so dances or cooking methods, or things like that,” said De Roos.

Schmidt teaches his students ways of living on the land and in traditional Indigenous ways.

He has worked with the Ochapowace Nation in addition to White Bear and with the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan.

Redvers Lions helping out people in need

By Gord Paulley The Redvers and District Lions Club canvassed their town last Sunday and accepted donations of non-perishable food items, household paper products, and used winter clothing and ski pants. All food and merchandise will be delivered to the Carlyle and District Food Bank to be distributed to people in need.

“This is our Lions Club second year of completing this project. We wish to thank the residents of the Town of Redvers

for their generous donations,” said secretary Michelle Jensen.

In the public outreach category, the late Adrian K. Paton, who lived in Arcola, won for An Honest, Genial and Kindly People – A Private Collection of First Nations Photographs from the Turn of the Century in Southern Saskatchewan. The book was released in 2019.

De Roos noted Paton’s daughter nominated him. Paton was recognized for working very closely with Indigenous people and respecting the information they provided him.

“It has been very successful and distributed quite widely throughout Saskatchewan and Canada,” said De Roos.

Paton, who died earlier this year, always took a keen interest in history and in photographs of people, particularly Indigenous individuals, building up an impressive collection of pictures during his life.

He released the book at age of 85.

An Honest, Genial and Kindly People also features history and stories that Paton gathered over the years.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brian John Meyer on Saturday, October 9, 2021. His family knew him as a kind, authentic and mild- mannered man. He was a caring coach and mentor; an organizer, a great listener, and someone who was there for anyone in need. Brian was a very supportive man who loved watching his kids and grandkids succeed and grow. He could easily be found at a dance studio, hockey rink, golf course, baseball diamond, school gym proudly watching his children and grandchildren, or walking a trail with his pup, Phil.

Brian had a unique way to tell a good story and really enjoyed sharing them. If you were lucky enough to hear a story or two from Brian, you would understand how wise, caring and appreciative of a man he was. Whether he was speaking about his experience managing Jr A hockey, coaching the Carlyle Midget Lynx, the fun times he had with friends and family, or how proud he was to be a member of the team at Golf Kenosee, he spoke in such a way to make you feel like you were there with him. Of all the people he touched, what he enjoyed most was being next to and supporting his wife, Delores, while she shared many perogies, cabbage rolls and afghans with neighbours, friends and family. Both Brian and Delores are considered by so many to be very giving people.

Brian is survived by his wife Delores; daughter Tacey and her children Talen, Rylan, Rese, Denae, Amryn, Tyce, and Daxan; son Jay (Janelle); brother Morley (Donna) and children; as well as many extended family and friends. A celebration of Brian’s life will take place when golf greens wake up after winter. In lieu of flowers or gifts the family asks that you donate to the Golf Kenosee Junior Golf Program, Box 98, Kenosee Lake, S0C 2S0.

FORMER ARCOLA RESIDENT RECOGNIZED Susan Graham, of Regina, was presented with the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers by the Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Russ Mirasty, on Sunday October 17, 2021.

Susan, along with her siblings, was raised on her parents' (Ward and Mary Graham) farm south of Arcola. She stated, it was the Saskatchewan community spirit that inspired her volunteering.

She believes her volunteering started around the age of 10 with UNICEF, 4-H, community events, and this continued throughout her life.

Susan has canvassed for charities, volunteered for her church, the Soup Kitchen, St. Andrew's College Dinner Committee, United Way Coordinator, Government House Historical Society and 20 years with the Regina Lyric Musical Theatre. Her latest involvement is with the CBC Pensioners National Association board.

Susan believe there are many people worthy of this honour and she is just a lucky one to be nominated and chosen. Susan said volunteering is rewarding; it has broadened her horizons and has introduced her to many new people (friends).

The Carlyle Sports Arena’s ice schedule is starting to fill up as the hockey teams and skating club start their regular seasons Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, respectively. As the temperatures drop there have been discussions of installing an outdoor ice surface to the north of the Sports Arena again this season.

Carlyle town council’s next regular scheduled meeting is set for Nov. 3.

Arcola Health Centre fundraising update

By Gord Paulley The Arcola Health Centre lab staff is pleased to advise that their entire donation request of $20,000 has been fulfilled for the purchase of a complete blood count (CBC) blood testing machine. In addition to the $2,500 donated by the Carlyle and District Lions Club, $10,000 was received from Grimes Sales and Service, $3,000 from

the Arcola Optimist Club, and $4,500 from the Arcola, Kisbey, and Carlyle Palliative Care Committee.

Palliative care also donated the lab up to $2,500 more to assist in the purchase of a new blood tube rocker and slide staining dishes to complete their hematology department needs.

In addition to thanking all sponsors, fundraising spokesperson Kim Penney also wanted

to personally recognize two Arcola Optimist members.

“Kelvin Luedtke provided his fundraising expertise, and Blake Brownridge went above and beyond to ensure we would get all of the funds raised that we needed. A big heartfelt thanks to the both of you for steering me in the right direction. The generosity we have here in southeastern Saskatchewan is incredible.”

The Alida community extends condolences to Leona and Scott McKinna and family on the death of her mother Irene Pasowisty who passed away Oct. 11 at the age of 92 years at the Country Meadows Personal Care Home in Neepawa, Man. at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, parents Hector and Marie Boutin and seven brothers and sisters-in-law.

There were two funeral services held in this area on Oct. 23. At Riga Cemetery, there was a graveside service for Laurel (Shire) Cook.

She passed away Oct. 7 in Winnipeg at age 50. She leaves behind husband Lee Cook and her family Ashley, Alyssa, Austin, Ami, Nick and Lillie.

At the Fairlight Community Hall, a funeral service was held for Dona Low. She passed away on Oct. 12 at the age of 73.

She leaves her husband, Jerry and family of Lisa, Kevin (Laura) and Christine (Sheldon) and their families.

The Wawota Public Book Club met at the council chambers on Oct. 18. They discussed their latest read, All The Light We Can Not See, by Anthony Doerr.

Sympathy to the family of the late Doreen (Funk) Seeman of Saskatoon. She passed away on Oct. 12 at the age of 78.

She was predeceased by her first husband Ed Funk and she is survived by her husband, Glenn Seeman and her family, Leighton,

Dustin, Trenton and Kriston, and James (Seeman) and their families. A funeral service was held in Saskatoon on Oct. 23 and also one was held at the Wawota Free Methodist Church.

Wawota Parkland held an impromptu rodeo last Friday. They had a horse, a goat, two clowns and an announcer. Mr. Risling was a good sport as he fulfilled his commitment to the student body as they reached their goal for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Word has been received of the passing of Garry Zilm, a former Wawota resident. He passed away in Regina on Oct. 13 at the age of 79. His parents were Wilbur and Ethel. He was predeceased by his wife Lonette and is survived by his family, Brent and Marti, stepchildren Kerry and Tammy. He was also a brother to Henry (Myrna).

Visiting with Shirley Corkish from Cottage Grove, Minn., were Jeff Corkish, Owen, Addie and Mason. Jeff and Owen spent some time hunting before returning home.
