Carlyle’s Dickens Village Festival is on for 2021 Submitted by Gord Paulley The Dickens Village Festival Committee is extremely pleased to advise that the 2021 event will take place the weekend of Dec. 3-5.

“Of course, Dickens had a big decision to make concerning going ahead with the event, but when the Town of Carlyle announced new COVID 19 vaccination regulations to its facilities on October 20th, we decided to proceed,” said committee member Dianne Twietmeyer.

The Cornerstone Theatre is busy rehearsing and their play, a humorous and witty musical called Scrooge in Space, will be a classic. It is written by Carlyle’s own Megan McAuley. The play will take place Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 7:30.

There will be also be a Sunday matinee starting at 2 p.m.

Added Twietmeyer: “Everyone entering the facility has to be double vaccinated or show proof of a negative test within 72 hours of entry. We are presently working on details but expect this inconvenience to be negligible.”

In addition to having

their annual parade, street vendors are already confirming their attendance. Carlyle Fire & Rescue will be selling their famous turkey drumsticks, Carlyle One Church its rice pudding, the Knights of Columbus its chili, Carlyle Martial Arts Center will have perogies, Carlyle Lions with baked potatoes and the Carlyle Elementary School will have smokies on a stick.

During the day, the committee is asking for musical buskers and wants to keep the entertainment local and “open mike.” Please contact Dianne directly at 306-577-9824 for further information. Also located at the Memorial Hall will be Fezziwig’s Pub. Roy Rutagines and Diane Villamor will be serving food from the kitchen.

After nearly two years of lockdowns, Twietmeyer is relieved to see a light at the end of this COVID tunnel.

Stoughton student shares a success story

By Sabrina Kraft and Norm Park Three students who demonstrated high levels of achievement from each of the three areas of the school division shared their stories with the South East Cornerstone Public School Board recently.

Jessica Baumgartner, a Grade 12 student from Stoughton Central School, placed third in a national speech competition called Speakers Idol. Baumgartner presented her speech to the board virtually in real time.

More than 300 speakers entered the contest, sponsored by the Simon Weisenthal Centre.

“Volunteering has been always something that I always enjoyed, during my spare time,” said Baumgartner. “My parents raised me to be kind, open-minded, respectful and helpful. I would not be who I am today, without their support, and the support from those at the Stoughton School.”

“These encouragements helped me to speak up about the Pride Flag burning at our school and again when I wrote my speech about sexual assault. I feel that consent is very important after a personal experience, and seeing others who were affected about it,” said Baumgartner.

“Teaching about consent is the very beginning, but someone has to take the first steps to make sure that this happens. I took a leap to take those steps. My speech

hit hard, and dug deep with the truth, with what I believe needs to be said.”

“The speech competition was giving me a platform to talk about something important, and I couldn’t pass it up,” added Baumgartner.

“I feel very accomplished that many people heard my speech, and many people can start to make a change.”

Self-blame is sometimes something that women will feel. They need to build defences, gather information, which, “is our only defence.”

She added that young women had to be careful as to selecting who they are with, what they wear and that “anything but yes, means stop. Why are women being told they are the ones who have to change?”

As trustee Jim Vermeersch noted, “If you finished third, it’s hard to image what the first and second place finishers did to finish ahead of you.”

Shay Frederick, from the Estevan Comprehensive School, excelled in Skills Canada in cosmetology.

Frederick won a gold medal in the provincial competition in May and a silver medal for her work at the national championship, held June 15.

Her teacher, Joyce Mack, shared Frederick’s story with the Cornerstone board, as Frederick was unable to speak due to a commitment in her nursing program.

Mack explained the many difficulties that Frederick had to face to compete at the provincial Skills Can-

Competing in a virtual event was something very new for Frederick. There were unique challenges that she had to face. Mack noted that the support received from the Estevan Comprehensive School and the school division office was very valuable for her student.

Mack touted Shay’s skills in hair design, cutting, colouring and time management on both female and male subjects, among other things. She also noted her personal qualities of persistence and cognitive skills.

“These students who enter the competition over the years I have been involved, starting in 1998, have not only trained in the classroom but also after regular class

hours and on weekends.

They are driven,” Mack said.

Frederick practised on family and friends and although it was a roller coaster year, Mack said Frederick stuck to tough 2 1/2 to 3 1/2-hour sessions just to get even better.

“We taught and learned remotely once we learned that everything was going to move to remote learning,” said Mack. ECS educator/ administrator Tara John and Brian Wright served as proctors with videos and photos being presented. Special cutting tools and chemical services were required to compete and Shay noted after the tough competition that Mack “was the person I needed for my stubborn self.”

Jay Boll from 33 Central School in Fillmore shared his accomplishments at school, his role in the Provincial Youth Council, and his selection for a scholarship to attend the University of British Columbia.

“My experience was a very positive one. I always felt that I had the supports that I needed. Within high school, I participated in a few different extra-curricular activities. In my senior year, I was part of the Provincial Youth Council, and selected as one of 12 student leaders across the province,” said Boll.

“My main point is that even if you come from a small school, like I did, you can still succeed at a bigger stage,” added Boll.

The students spoke in

connection with the division’s Monitoring Goal No. 2, which states: “South East Cornerstone Public School Division is committed to student success and achievement in every student in every school and to ensuring that our students achieve at high levels.”

Cornerstone utilizes a variety of screens and assessments to measure the achievement level of students.

The report presented at the meeting focused on student achievement from the 2020-21 school year. There are gaps in some data sets, due to the pauses that the school division experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though extreme challenges existed, the students, staff and school community rose above the challenges and continued to achieve at high levels.

Cornerstone students were above the provincial average in 16 of 20 subjects at the conclusion of the 2020-21 school year.

This was the first year of utilizing Star assessment data for Cornerstone. They will have a baseline data for comparison purposes next school year.

Initial data shows that several students need math supports. Cornerstone has put some interventions in place including new teaching resources for teachers and two math instructional coaches to provide in-class coaching to support math pedagogy.

First mental health awareness supper a success Submitted by Gord Paulley During the summer, two local residents, Tyler Matthewson and Dustin Boutin, met and decided to plan a function to bring mental awareness and its challenges to the forefront.

The regular financial pressures of day to day living, combined with nearly two years of public health restrictions, have stressed people to a new level and the two organizers felt it was time to bring these issues out in the open. With October declared Mental Health Awareness Month, a fundraising supper was planned and the event took place on Oct. 23 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Both Matthewson and Boutin were impressed with the turnout.

“This was a first-time event and advertising was done basically by word of mouth. We eventually added a Facebook page and ended up with 145 people attending from all over southeastern

Saskatchewan,” said Matthewson.

Rylan and Cindy Weir catered the supper and employees of the Queen of Hearts Beauty Lounge served the refreshments.

Matthewson’s sister Katie Gavelin, mom Nancy Matthewson, and Promises Wedding and Rentals owner Tania Yanchycki helped with the organizing and setup. Jody Veroba was the guest speaker. A live auction was held and there was a large 50/50 draw. The net proceeds from that 50/50, which reached $2,700, were donated back to the event by its winner Kayle Swanson. A very impressive $33,000.00 was raised from this inaugural event with all proceeds going to the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Matthewson and Boutin couldn’t be happier.

Welcome to Carlyle to new kids on the block Submitted by Gord Paulley

You rarely see a family move from Vancouver Island to the Prairies, but in this case British Columbia’s loss is Carlyle’s gain.

The Observer recently caught up with

Brent and Carolynn McKinnon and welcomed them to town.

The Mckinnons have been married for 44 years and both had good government jobs with the Province of B.C. Brent was a food and beverage manager at Westshore Parks and

Recreation for over 20 years. Carolynn was employed for 20 years as a community resource administration supervisor with the Vancouver Island Authority. Both retired over 10 years ago.

They have a son and daughter and five grandchildren, and lived in suburban Parksville.

With the warmer weather and recent COVID issues, the McKinnons started having thoughts of making a move from the island.

Vehicle traffic was increasing and there were many people heading to B.C. from Western Canada instead of going south to Arizona. With the warmer climate, there were more and more homeless on their streets and the ferry crossing to the mainland was arduous and

expensive. They made a decision to move.

Brent has a brother in Manitoba and this summer they drove down to visit him. They travelled through many towns and cities along the way and then one day in August stopped for gas at the Co-op Convenience Store at the junction of Highways 9 and 13. They drove down Main Street Carlyle, looked at each other, and said, this was the place.

Said Carolynn, “Carlyle just had the right feel to it, lots of small businesses, no empty buildings, no graffiti, and of course the unique centre lane parking. We were hooked.”

After visiting Brent’s brother, the McKinnons returned home to Parksville, and made an offer on

a house without setting foot in it. After a home inspection, they made the offer, which was accepted. Brent and Carolynn have many hobbies including gardening, fishing and woodworking.

They plan on trying out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing this

winter.

The McKinnons are loving the friendly personality of their fellow neighbours. Added Brent, “Carolynn and myself are very happy to have selected Carlyle as our home. The people are wonderful and everyone seems so obliging.”

COVID-19 policies lacking clarity

By Murray Mandryk That struggle of Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government with COVID-19 goes well beyond tough outcomes in this fourth wave.

Right now, the problem is also a lack of clarity in the message it’s been sending out.

Sure, outwardly the government tells us COVID-19 is now a disease of the unvaccinated and that everyone should get vaccinated.

But there’s been just enough ambiguity in the government message — messaging that’s often sounded more political than in really needs be under the circumstances of a global pandemic — for some people to believe that it’s not really essential that they be vaccinated.

This inconsistent approach sure doesn’t seem to be doing the Sask. Party government many political favours. A recent September-October Angus Reid poll showed a massive 29 percentage point drop in public confidence in its handling of COVID-19.

This was likely driven by Saskatchewan’s recent horrific numbers — the worst or near the worst in the nation.

In October, Saskatchewan saw 156 COVID19-related deaths reported — a sharp rise from 96 in September. It was the worst month, surpassing 151 COVID-19-related deaths in January before vaccines were widely available.

What is clear to most is that the government’s strategy wasn’t working in October that also saw sick ICU patients shipped to Ontario because ICU beds in Saskatchewan were all filled.

What’s less clear, however, is what the government has in mind to deal with this problem and why it hasn’t been more adamant in its get-people-vaccinated strategy.

In response to questions as to how it intends to deal with this fourth wave, the government has said that it is confident that it can get through it without further restrictions beyond what’s already been imposed.

To the government’s point, COVID-19 daily case counts are going down. In fact, they are significantly down from their peak at more than 500 per day.

The problem, however, is testing for COVID-19 is also significantly down, meaning cases may be going undetected. And doctors attribute our case numbers and deaths to our lowest-in-the-nation vaccination rate. Less than 80 per cent the eligible Saskatchewan population has been fully vaccinated. Coincidentally, numbers show about 80 per cent the cases are unvaccinated.

While we are all again wearing masks and while we do need proof of vaccination to walk into restaurants, bars, concerts, sporting events and now even liquor stores (things this government earlier stated it was reluctant to impose), the government is willing to only go so far.

Proof of vaccination is not required at most places we shop. It’s not even required to sit in the Saskatchewan legislature, as we found in the saga of now independent MLA Nadine Wilson, removed from the Sask. Party caucus after misleading on her vaccination status.

Yet the Sask. Party shot down an NDP opposition’s motion requiring all members to show vaccination proof, meaning Wilson only requires showing a negative COVID-19 test to take her seat.

Couple this with the government’s reluctance to follow recommendations in a letter signed by all its medical health officers to limit household gatherings (especially, for the unvaccinated) or to require vaccination proof for vaccine-eligible children to attend class.

It has made for a muddled government message as to what it deems acceptable and what it doesn’t.

And it is this lack of clarity that now may be the problem.

Dead ends not so dead after all

Shelley Luedtke We’d driven past the corn maze at Rosthern many times, each time remarking it’s something we should do sometime.

Sometime finally came this year.

Mazes have been providing entertainment and investigation for centuries. European royalty had elaborate hedge mazes built in the 16th century, and as early as the 1880s, scientists began designing mazes for animals to navigate as a way to study behaviour.

People have gotten pretty creative over time and while corn mazes are tremendously popular, there are also ones made of tropical plants, wood, ice, mirrors and one in London made of 250,000 books that took four days and hundreds of volunteers to build. One of the largest ever created was located in California and was so big several people resorted to calling 911 after getting hopelessly lost.

A few summers ago,

we toured an arboretum that featured vast collections of trees and shrubs as well as 25 specialty gardens. While I enjoyed strolling through most of it, my enjoyment took a turn when we attempted the Maze Garden. The pamphlet said it was a “gardenesque planting arranged to create a fun place in which one gets lost and tries to find one’s way out.”

Beautiful? Yes. Fun? No. And that surprised me. I thought I would readily enjoy the backand-forth nature of the walk, but that wasn’t the case. The more dead ends I hit the more frustrated I became and instead of enjoying my time wandering through the tall, lush greenery, I just wanted to get it over with and get out.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. However the point of a maze is to confuse and disorient so that every few feet you need to decide which direction you should go.

Consequently, you have a couple of options: you can try and get through the maze as quickly as possible and take on the competitive challenge, or you can decide you aren’t going to rush, but instead explore the maze more fully.

corn maze, or I should say it’s the approach my husband suggested.

He asked if I wanted to just get to the end of the puzzle, or did I want to explore the entire maze instead. I chose the latter. We walked as far as we could in each direction and took the time to experience as many changes of direction as we could. It took longer, but it was so much more fulfilling.

A woman named Amy Craton was a college student in 1962 but the pursuit of her degree was stalled following a divorce. She moved from Massachusetts to California to raise her four children, where she succeeded professionally.

When her boss rewarded her with a vacation trip to Hawaii, it opened up a new path when she made the decision to move and make the island her home. More than 50 years after starting her degree, Craton returned to school. She chose to enroll in an online program through Southern New Hampshire University where the biggest challenge wasn’t the coursework, but rather dealing with the six-hour time difference between Hawaii and New Hampshire, sometimes requiring her to be up in the wee hours of the morning.

because the timing was right. After numerous twists and turns, painful dead ends and unexpected opportunities, the 94-year-old graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA and then enrolled in a master’s degree program.

Sometimes we get somewhere in the most efficient way possible, but often life doesn’t pan out that way. Instead of seeing roadblocks as dead ends, it would be better if we looked to the left and then to the right to see if there’s another way of getting where we want to be. There usually is. In the retracing of steps or the change in direction we demonstrate strength, aspiration and adaptability.

A maze is filled with dead ends. That’s intentional. If your only option is to turn a different direction that’s exactly what you need to do. Too often in life we treat obstacles as a finale when really they should be seen as simply another twist in the story. Perhaps the most interesting part of the adventure is encountering the roadblocks and looking with anticipation at which direction to try next.

While we may not always want to accept the reason for the stumbling block, it just might be the case that a more meandering approach will pay dividends in the end.

That’s my outlook.

All tucked in and ready for winter Recently the Carlyle Golf Club placed tarp covers on their nine grass greens for the winter. Groundskeeper Steve Polsom was very pleased with the turnout. “I have been covering these greens for years and never have had this job take only an hour and 43 minutes. Thank-you to all that volunteered including employees of Pure-Chem Energy.” The greens at the Carlyle Golf Club are covered annually each fall to prevent winter wind damage and snow mold.

Alida news – Haunted House wraps up Submitted by Edel Cowan The Anthony families, all from Moose Jaw (brother Wayne, sisters, Heather Goddard and Hazel Diebel, and nieces Jennifer and Hannah) attended the funeral of their nephew Mitch Anthony on Oct. 21 and visited with Dale and Holly Anthony, as well as with Bill and Kathy Anthony and their family.

What a fantastic final weekend we had at our Haunted House event here in Alida.

On Oct. 29, we had 79 guests who came to visit the Haunted House and many of them also visited the Escape Room – it was a very busy night keeping everyone under control.

We just about lost one of our spooks as he was being assisted by a visitor in trying to escape from jail. Fortunately for us he became scared to leave the premises and rushed back to his room. All in all everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely and it was a very profitable evening for us.

The following we had

another 81 guests arrive, of which 37 visited the Escape room. Glad to report that they all survived both events, no one was lost in the haunted house and all solved the murder to escape from the room – another busy and profitable evening.

Oct. 31 was our annual Fun Fair where almost everyone came dressed in their costumes and the young children really enjoyed all the different games that were being offered. During the afternoon the Haunted House was also opened, having the lights on and no spooks in attendance.

One could enjoy a trip through the Halls of Horror and actually see where they were going and not having something/someone spooking them as they went along.

There were 38 guests who trotted through the haunted house but only five tackled the escape room with success.

Just before 3 p.m. many different contest draws were made and the results were as follows:

The spooks then began to arrive and were soon back in their designated spots ready for the next victims to come.

However there were only 24 guests who toured through the haunted house. Since it was a very slow evening the spooks actually spent most of their time visiting with each other.

We all appreciate the great amount of hard work and many hours spent on the preparations with the organizing of the Haunted House (including Escape Room and Fun Fair). Especially this year when we also had to deal with the COVID restrictions laid out for us. We do appreciate everyone’s cooperation while dealing with these rules. The approximate final tally for our event was $4,800.

We are now into November which will soon bring us to Remembrance Day on Nov. 11. Please remember to wear your poppy proudly and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrificed for our freedom. We shall remember them.

Pastor Matt Redstone welcoming everyone for Halloween at Carlyle One Church’s inaugural Trunk or Treat event. On Halloween, members provided kids with treats and other items from the backs of the vehicles at the Pure Chem parking lot.

“Despite being cold and windy, we welcomed 75 kids and their parents. One Church was happy with the turnout and we plan on making it an annual event,” said Redstone.

Government releases speech from the throne

This week saw the new session of the Saskatchewan Legislature open with the Speech from the Throne, outlining our goals for this session and for the years ahead.

As we manage our way through the pandemic, we are focused on building a better Saskatchewan – a stronger, safer, healthier, better educated and more independent Saskatchewan.

The past year has been challenging; however, the strength and resilience of the people of Saskatchewan is evident for all to see.

Our government continues critical investments in infrastructure throughout the province to ensure a strong economy and a stronger Saskatchewan.

This year's drought showed the need for reliable access to water throughout the province. We will continue to invest in the major irrigation project at Lake Diefenbaker,

Criminologist Daniel Nagin has said the certainty of being caught committing a crime is a vastly more powerful deterrent than the punishment.

To that end, our government wants to provide criminals with certainty that you will be caught if you commit a crime. We will add 60 new police positions and another 11 civilian positions to support a new law enforcement initiative and create a new Provincial Police Protective Service unit.

Too frequently in Saskatchewan, dangerous criminals with multiple active warrants are not brought to justice until they are caught committing more crimes. To address this, we will create new initiatives to address public concerns, such as the new Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team and the new Crime Reduction Teams for Meadow Lake, La Ronge, Lloydminster and Moose Jaw. Funding will also be dedicated to hiring more enforcement positions for police and the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team.

During this session, we will introduce and update legislation focused on ensuring public safety throughout the province.

Our government is focused on creating a healthier Saskatchewan by continuing our work to vaccinate as many people as possible against COVID-19 while investing in essential health care services. Right now, more than 85 per cent of eligible Saskatchewan residents have received the first dose of the vaccine and over 75 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Our government will continue working on projects like the Prince Albert and Weyburn hospitals, longterm care facilities in Grenfell and La Ronge, and replacement longterm care facilities in Watson and Estevan.

Engineering work is currently underway on

new urgent care centres for Saskatoon and Regina, which will help to reduce wait times in the emergency rooms and 600 new long-term beds for Regina.

We will continue to invest in mental health and addiction services.

Already, we are seeing the work done in Estevan through the new treatment centre at St. Joseph’s Hospital featuring 30 new addictions treatment beds.

Our continued efforts will include more inpatient addiction treatment beds throughout the province, and look for partnerships with third-party providers with the goal of adding another 150 treatment spaces over the next three years.

Residents are already seeing the work that has been done in Estevan.

The past 20 months have been challenging for Saskatchewan's educational system and our families; thank you to our dedicated teachers, teacher's assistance, administrators and support staff. We are focused on creating a better educated Saskatchewan by investing and supporting children throughout the province.

Work continues on 16 school projects as part of our ambitious capital plan to provide students with the education they deserve. We will also create a new learning policy to ensure students receive the best education possible if they study online.

Our government is also planning to create a new funding pool to enhance class support for teachers working with the greatest number of students, including new funding to hire education assistants.

We have worked with the federal government to reduce childcare costs to an average of $10 a day by 2025-26 and create thousands of new childcare spaces. We will also increase wages for childcare workers by up to $3 per hour.

Carlyle Legion making preparations for Remembrance Day Submitted by Doug Waldner

The Carlyle branch of the Royal Canadian Legion would like to invite all to the upcoming Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 11. One of the duties of the legion is to honour and remember those who sacrificed in military actions around the world.

As has been the case for over 100 years, it will be our privilege to conduct the Remembrance Day service in Carlyle.

Due to the restrictions currently in place because of the coronavirus, it has been decided to conduct our service outside at the cenotaph by the Carlyle Rink. As was done last year, our service will begin at 10:45 a.m. and be broadcast over a low power FM transmitter, so that those who attend may park their vehicle and listen

to the service.

All wreaths will be laid either before the service or after.

Please purchase a poppy, attend the service and help us to honour those whose sacrifice we must never forget.

The legion would also like to take this opportunity to make everyone aware of the ongoing poppy campaign.

Funds raised through the poppy campaign are held in trust by the local branch and are used to benefit veterans and their families by donating to various agencies so that they can aid veterans and their families. These agencies in-

clude medical clinics, hospitals, senior residences and other similar organizations that serve the community and local veterans.

In order to ensure that all funds raised by the poppy campaign are expended appropriately, all expenditures from the poppy fund must be approved under very strict rules by provincial command.

The public can also donate to the Carlyle branch of the Royal Canadian Legion through the Town of Carlyle office.

Any donation made that way will also be eligible for a tax deductible receipt. Funds donated to the Carlyle branch will be used for projects in and around the local community.

Funds donated to the Carlyle branch, outside the poppy fund, may be used in a much more flexible manner than

those donated to the poppy fund.

Our branch would also like to reach out all veterans of the armed services and various police forces. It would be of assistance to the Legion to know how many veterans of various branches of service are in the area. If you are a veteran of any branch of the armed forces or of any police service we would like to ask you to let your local legion know of your presence in the area.

Arcola Remembrance Day service update Submitted by Gord Paulley

The town of Arcola will be observing Remembrance Day at the cenotaph.

While there will not be a formal program this year due to public health restrictions, committee members are planning for a full program to return in November 2022. The Observer had the opportunity to talk with local historian Scott Paton, who provided some background.

“For many decades, Remembrance Day services in Arcola were held annually by the local members of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Due to declining enrolment, the Arcola Band took over and continued to hold the program until 2019.

Together with my wife Renee Pylypuk, we became involved with the annual event and up until 2019 we conducted our program in the Mac Murray Theatre.

We used their digital projector and large screen for the local service.”

Paton has a genuine interest in military history and enjoys participating in the event. While a formal program did not take place in 2020 and now 2021, they have created a website called ArcolaRemembers. ca, and is linked to YouTube. Since 2016, Paton and Pylypuk have added an annual vignette to YouTube

South East Military Museum has more banners Submitted by Gord Paulley

Historian Craig Bird visited the Town of Carlyle last week and updated the Observer on the military banners being proudly displayed in various towns in southeast Saskatchewan.

To date, 33 banners have been raised in seven different towns and cities including Carlyle, Redvers, Stoughton and Lampman. This is the museum’s first year of raising banners and Bird indicated that further towns will be added in the coming months.

Banners will be displayed on main streets from early September to Remembrance Day. Two banners have been recently added to Main Street Carlyle, Private John Brown and Private Nels Dunn.

Honouring our veterans on Remembrance Day

As Remembrance Day approaches, our thoughts go out to the men and women who have served our country.

We remember the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and those that are with us and help us to remember through the work of the Royal Canadian Legion and other programs. The past months have given us many challenges and we

have to face them once again.

COVID 19 continues to make us review how we will proceed with our Nov. 11 ceremonies.

Wawota: The Wawota Legion will have a wreathlaying ceremony at the Legion cenotaph starting at 10:50 a.m. Wreaths will be dedicated by the Government of Saskatchewan, Wawota Royal Canadian Legion, veterans of World War 1, Veterans

of World War 2, Veterans of the Korean War and the peacekeepers, and those who have served and those who are still serving.

The public is required

to follow the guidelines of the province and community with regards to COVID 19.

Kipling: Kipling Legion will be having a Wreath Laying

Ceremony at the cenotaph at 11 a.m. Members of the public are welcome to view the ceremony following COVID protocols.

Unfortunately the legion will not be having their usual tea or gathering following the ceremony.

Stoughton: The Stoughton Legion will hold an outdoor service with their wreaths placed prior to the service. Please arrive by 10:30 a.m. An indoor service will follow in the

Stoughton Legion Hall at 11 a.m. All public is required to be fully vaccinated in order to enter the hall. The service will also be streamed on the Legion’s Facebook page.

Lampman: The Lampman Legion will be holding an indoor service at 10:30 a.m. at the Lampman Legion Hall. The public is required to follow the guidelines of the province and community with regards to COVID 19.

The battles on the western front of World War 1 were fought on farmlands that are very similar to the lands south of the Moose Mountains.

And just as our yellow dandelion thrives almost everywhere on those lands, so does the filmy red poppy flower grow as a weed in France and Belgium.

So, in the spring of 1915 when Canadian army physician John McCrae wrote “In Flanders fields the poppies grow,” he was simply

describing the landscape that surrounded his field hospital.

McRae did not survive the war, but his poem went on to capture all the sadness and hope of his times.

The poem also inspired Madame Anna Guérin, a French educator and speaker, to promote a small silk

replica of her nation’s poppy as a fundraiser for war orphans and veterans. Through her

efforts, the poppy was quickly adopted in the United States, Canada and Great Britain and to this day is worn as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for those who served in all the conflicts that defended our freedoms and democracy.

Canada adopted the poppy in 1921, and one

hundred years later, a replica of that original poppy will be worn by members of the Royal Canadian Legion at Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the nation.

The ceremony in Kisbey will again be held outdoors at the cenotaph, starting at 2 p.m.

War amputee veterans started 100-year legacy Of the thousands of Canadian soldiers who were wounded while serving in the First and Second World Wars, many returned home missing limbs.

United by a common bond of amputation, these veterans not only served their country during wartime, but they made a difference in the

lives of generations of amputees that continues.

In 1916, on the battlefields at Ypres in Northern Belgium, Sidney Lambert (18871971), a lieutenant colonel and army padre, lost his left leg above the knee.

While recovering at a hospital in Toronto, Lambert conceived of

the idea of a national association to bring together, support and fight the battles for amputee veterans, today known as The War Amps. In 1920, he became the first dominion president of the association and worked tirelessly to bring veterans issues before the government.

It was these First

World War amputee veterans, like Lambert, who welcomed the new contingent of amputee veterans following the Second World War, helping them adapt to their new reality and sharing all that they had learned.

One of these was Neil Conner (1918–2012), who served as a navigator with the Royal Cana-

dian Air Force. He was injured when his plane was shot down near Bremen, Germany, resulting in the loss of his right leg below the knee.

Another was Bert Coulson (1921-1979), who served with the Canadian Army and lost both of his legs below the knee due to injuries sustained while serving in

Emmerich, Germany.

Along with their fellow War Amps members, these veterans went on to provide support to civilian amputees. Coulson said the best way to help was to “roll up my pant leg and show them we can dance, bowl, hold down a normal job. It’s what you have left that counts.”

Kipling veterans are gone but not forgotten waters of the U.S. and Canada and even the St. Lawrence seaway. Several naval and a great many merchant ships were lost to them but numerous U-boats were also destroyed by the naval and air forces of Canada and the U.S. Later, Gerry was posted to the West Coast and the Canadian Minesweeper HMCS Quatsino out of Victoria.

Minesweepers were small warships whose main purpose, as the name indicates, was to clear important areas for ship-traffic of sea mines that may have been laid by enemy vessels. A mine could sink or severely damage a ship of any size. Minesweepers were also occasionally called upon for escort and anti-submarine duties. They carried a crew of around 85-90 men.

After the war ended and with three years of service, Gerry was discharged with the rank of able seaman. He returned to Kipling and joined his brother and father in the general store business of L. Krecsy & Sons, later running his own stores in Kipling until retirement. Gerry has since passed away.

George Demyen enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 at 20 years of age. He was trained as an infantry soldier first in the Prince Albert Volunteers Regiment in Canada and later in the United Kingdom in a replacement unit.

Prior to the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944, he joined the Calgary Highlanders Regiment of the 2nd Canadian Division and was placed in No. 11 Platoon of A Company. His regiment landed in France shortly after D-Day. George was a Bren gunner.

The Bren gun is a type of light machine gun of which there were at least one assigned to each infantry platoon. His job as No. 1 on the Bren was to carry and fire the weapon. An assistant, or No. 2, would carry spare ammunition and parts and help the No. 1 reload the Bren when in combat.

In France at the beginning of the Battle of Falaise Gap on Aug. 13, 1944, George was severely wounded in action by enemy artillery fire. He spent the next six months in hospitals, undergoing operations and recovery; first six days in France, and the remainder in England.

We will remember them.

Of the original 30 men who were in George's platoon at the start of this battle, one was killed by sniper fire the night before George was wounded; several were killed by the same shell fire that wounded George; and by the time that he got out of hospital, all of the rest were dead.

After the war ended, and with 3 1/2 years of service, George was discharged with the rank of private. He returned home and took up farming in the Buffalo Plains district southwest of Kipling.

He later moved to Kipling where he owned and drove school buses and drove buses for pipeline companies until retirement. George has since passed away.

Enos Sproat Enos Sproat enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 at 21 years of age. He completed pilot's training in November 1942 and was sent overseas to the United Kingdom where he was posted to No. 407 Squadron RCAF in Coastal Command.

patrols over the North Atlantic Ocean in search of enemy submarines by the use of aircraft-mounted radar. If an enemy sub was discovered on the surface, the aircraft of No. 407 squadron, and others like it in Coastal Command, would attack it before it had time to submerge by the use of a spotlight(called a Liegh-Light, which was mounted under the nose of the aircraft.

They would drop depth charges or bombs on the sub.

These aircraft were known as Liegh-Light bombers.

Enos and crew were also involved in flying patrols over the English Channel and the coast of France during the DDay invasion of June 1944.

Later in the war, Enos was posted to Transport Command. He was sent to No. 435 Squadron of the RCAF which was stationed in Burma.

There, he piloted a Dakota transport aircraft with a crew of four. Their missions mostly were to drop supplies by parachute over jungle and mountainous terrain to the British 14th Army who were battling the Japanese forces.

Many people from the Kipling area served their country over the years. Here are some of their profiles: Gerry Krecsy Gerry Krecsy enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1943 at 18 years of age. He trained as an asdic operator. Asdic was the ship-borne sonar of the time a type of echo-ranging equipment used for the underwater detection of submarines.

In the case of enemy submarine attack, asdic was vital to the defence of the warship and any merchant ships that it may be escorting.

Gerry's first ship-posting was to the Canadian Corvette HMCS Midland out of Halifax.

Corvettes were small warships tasked mainly with escorting coastal convoys but were sometimes used in trans-Atlantic convoys as well.

Their purpose was to guard against and repel attacks by submarines or aircraft.

They carried a crew of around 95 men.

Throughout the war, many German submarines, or Uboats prowled the east coast

Veterans served in many ways during wars « A13 with 4 1/2 years of service, Enos was discharged with the rank of flight lieutenant. His pilot's log book shows that he landed aircraft on 48 airports in 17 different countries.

He returned home and got started in farming in the Crystal Springs district east of Kipling with the help of the Veterans Land Act. After passing on the family farm to son Gordon and family, Enos and wife Mildred retired and moved to Kipling until his passing.

Elgin Batters Elgin Batters enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 at 19 years of age. He was trained as a rifleman in the infantry, taking his basic training at Calgary. He was then sent overseas to the United Kingdom and placed at Camp Aldershot in southern England where he joined the South Saskatch-

ewan Regiment of the 2nd Canadian Division.

This unit was landed on the Normandy coast of France after D-Day. In the later part of July 1944, during the Battle of Verriers Ridge in France, Elgin was wounded in his leg by an enemy shell.

The damage was severe enough that he was shipped back to Canada after spending time in hospital in the U.K. After spending more time in hospital in Winnipeg, he was discharged from the army for medical reasons before the end of the year. He had spent three years in the service and was discharged with the rank of private.

Elgin returned home and farmed until 1951 when he started an earth moving and road construction business in partnership with Charlie Gerhardt called G. & B. Construction, now known as Gee Bee Construction. He

bought out Gerhardt's interest in the business in 1960 and ran it until passing it on to his sons. He retired and lived in Kipling until his passing.

Stan Olafson Stan grew up on the farm 10 miles north of Windthorst where he went to a country school. While helping his dad on the farm, War interrupted Stan's life in 1942.

Stan was the oldest and at 21 enlisted in the army. After IQ tests it was decided that he was best suited as an engineer.

After enlisting, Stan was sent for training. He first went to basic infantry training in P.A. After that, he was sent on to Chilliwack, to Engineer's Training in November of 1942 and then sent overseas.

He went over on the 'Isle d' France'.

There were so many being transported they had them 'stacked' 3-4 deep.

Stan was trained as an engineer. He helped build bridges over some of the largest rivers in Northeastern Europe...

the Seine...the Rhine.

But, building bridges was not Stan's only chore.

He worked at 'picking up' (clearing) mines too.

While in a little village up near Oldenburg Germany, on May 8, 1945 they got word.

He stayed on in Germany as an 'Army of Occupation” for 6 months and was then able to make the long trip home.

He returned to farm on his grandparents’ homestead which was started in 1902 until retiring to Windthorst. Stan has since passed away.

William John Toppings William John Toppings was a man who farmed near Bender.

Toppings senior was called to fight in WW1, and he served in Europe as a signalman.

In an age when radio was still relatively new, signalmen were lined up at strategic points along a battlefield to relay information using flags and semaphore.

trenches, and returned to Canada on May 29, 1918. The date is recorded in a rather historical document; his income tax form T1a of 1919, showing his farm income of 1918. Canada had avoided charging income tax prior to the war, it was one of those incentives that encouraged people to move from overseas. However, in 1917 the government imposed a “temporary” income tax to help cover wartime expenses, and returning soldiers were among the first to be subject to a temporary measure that is still in place over 100 years later.

Irvin John Toppings In 1941 Irving John Toppings joined the war effort voluntarily.

He was a bright young man who excelled in mathematics, so he found himself being trained as a navigator for the Royal Canadian Air Force. After his training at Edmonton, Flying Officer Toppings was sent to England, where he joined the elite pathfinders.

er Force was indeed an elite unit in 1943.

It was comprised of hand-picked bomber crews that were known for their exceptional navigational ability.

These crews flew mainly Mosquito or Lancaster aircraft, and would fly alone at night, deep into enemy territory, to find and mark the targets for the main bomber force that followed far behind them.

Flying Officer Toppings was posted to the makeshift base of Bourn, from which he flew Lancasters.

While the normal RAF bomber command tour of duty was 30 sorties, and the American crews flew 25 sorties, it was common for pathfinder crews to fly a “double tour” which often meant 45 sorties or more. He flew 49 sorties successfully, but fate caught up with him on the 50th, when his Lancaster was shot down over Neurenberg.

Only the pilot survived, and he was captured by the Germans four days later, and placed in a prisoner of war camp.

Brad hails from Quill Lake and Michelle is the daughter of Robert & Gisele Carriere of Carlyle. They have two children, Jessica, 11, and Ryan, 9.

In addition to Gisele’s parents, Aime and Rita Gauthier, having a cabin there, Rita’s parents, the Paradis family from Storthoaks, were one of the first cottagers at Good Birds Point. Therefore, the Cooper children are fifth generation residents.

Together with three other partners, the Coopers formed Legacy Pharmacies Inc., which owns and operates pharmacies located in Redvers, Kipling and Candle Lake. Legacy Pharmacies encour-

ages local ownership of their stores by their operators and is actively seeking the acquisition of additional pharmacies across Saskatchewan.

It has been over three years since Brad and Michelle purchased their first electric vehicle, a 2018 Tesla Model X. Since ownership they have driven 65,000 kilometers, and being fully battery-powered, the only maintenance required has been tires and windshield washer fluid. A full electric charge averages 400 kilometers of range, with their electricity coming from an overnight charge on a 240-volt plug.

The estimated cost of charging is $15 to $18 per charge, or approximately 4.5 cents per kilometre travelled. More and more charging stations are being built across Canada and there is no doubt the electric vehicle popularity will increase in the coming

The Coopers are also adding solar panels to their new residence which in turn will lower their electricity costs.

It should be noted that General Motors, Ford and other automotive dealers are strongly focusing their efforts on the manufacturing of electric vehicles. There is no doubt that they will become an increasing presence on our highways in the coming years.

Carey Molberg’s winter adventure in the ‘50s Submitted by Carey Molberg When I was a teenager back in the 1950s, I enjoyed hunting and fishing. We lived in Arcola.

The area was mainly prairie but four miles north of town was the south edge of a large area of aspen parkland named the Moose Mountains.

This was home to many game birds and animals. Frequently my father and I, along with some friends, would go out after game birds which were plentiful and we appreciated the source of food.

I was an avid reader of outdoor magazines.

My favourite writer was Jack O’Connor, who was the hunting and shooting writer for Outdoor Life. He particularly liked the .270 calibre big game rifle so when I was 16 I purchased one using proceeds from my job delivering groceries. That fall I got a deer licence, had a good time but was a little too particular about what I would try to shoot and ended up not getting one.

The next year, in November 1955, on a cool

Saturday morning, I set out early with our 1950 Dodge, drove 10 miles west to Kisbey and then headed north into the rolling hills of the Moose Mountains. By that time it was snowing. In those days there was no such thing as all season tires.

One had either summer tires (smoothies) or winter tires, some of which were called knobbies. Our car had summer tires and with the fresh snow on the road I began having difficulty getting up the many hills. I would get close to the top but tires would spin and I would back down, back up the previous hill and take a faster run up the hill, sometimes with success. (At this point I think a few angels may have been keeping an eye on me as I was doing this).

I was having no success with one particularly difficult hill when I encountered farmer friends, Clarence Waind and his teenage son Doug, who were also hunting. They assessed the situation and let some air out of the tires to provide more traction. This was very successful and I was able

to continue on my way without further difficulty.

It was becoming more stormy but soon I was able to reach my destination, which was the farm of two bachelors Sheldon and Lewis Long.

By that time the storm was in full force and I appreciated the warmth of their kitchen and the lunch they provided.

Before going inside, I noticed a skinned elk hanging from the beak of the front of the barn with a single optimally placed bullet hole in mid-chest.

I was able to telephone my parents on the Long’s party line and let them know I was safe.

By mid-afternoon the storm was over and it was clear and sunny. Lewis got out his .270 rifle and their snowmobile which he and Sheldon had made. It was much like those sold commercially a few years later with skis at the front and a track to propel it. It had a small truck box at the back. Lewis said that immediately after a storm the deer would start moving so we should see something.

The storm had produced substantial drifts

which we glided over.

We continued along until Lewis spotted some large deer tracks which were obviously fresh. He stopped the snowmobile and said we should spread out and walk in the direction the tracks were headed. He said we should not try to follow the tracks. We started walking and soon I saw a nice white-tailed buck about 150 yards to my right. I fired a shot but missed. The deer stood still, seemingly trying to figure out where the shot came from. I fired another shot and this time the deer went down having been hit in the spine. We loaded it into the snowmobile and headed to the house.

By that time, it was supper time and we went in and enjoyed the meal Sheldon had prepared.

After supper Sheldon and Lewis quickly cleaned and skinned the deer and hung it in a tree. I was then glad to crawl into a comfortable bed.

It turned very cold that night and the next morning the deer was frozen solid.

The storm had drift-

Fortunately I had three dollars with me to pay for the gas. (At that time gasoline was 55 cents an Imperial gallon, which is 4.546 litres). I sawed off the nice set of four-point antlers.

Alas, they did not make it along when my parents moved from Arcola four years later.

Lewis accompanied me on my trip home. Initially we drove at the edge of cultivated fields where there was less drifting.

Later we were able to get back on the roads. I was home before dark.

The next day we took the front half of the deer

to the locker plant to be cut, wrapped and stored.

It weighed 99 pounds and they said it was the nicest wild game they had processed that fall. It was a good addition to our meat supply that year.

With that adventure, hunting was finished for me for the year and I was able to settle down to complete my Grade 12 studies.

I am very grateful for all that those two bachelors did for this young town kid who arrived at their farm unannounced at the beginning of a raging storm. They certainly provided an exciting adventure for me. I am also grateful to Clarence and Doug Waind for their vital role in the weekend’s successful outcome.

John Carl May May 20, 1930 – October 19, 2021 John was born in Vermillion, AB on May 20, 1930. He grew up on the family farm at Elk Point, AB with parents Max and Ida May and siblings Gerda, Rita and Gunther. In 1949 he left home and was employed as a labourer with Imperial Pipeline in Redwater, AB. One if his first jobs was walking the pipeline in all seasons looking for oil leaks.

Forty years later, after a career that began with Imperial Oil and merged through Westspur, Producers, Dome Petroleum, Amoco Canada and BP he retired as Plant Manager of the Saskatchewan portion of Cochin Pipelines Ltd., Regina. After that first initiation to pipelining he apprenticed and became a Journeyman First Class welder in 1956. He then transferred to Saskatchewan to become a welding inspector on the Westspur Pipeline from Midale to Cromer, MB. While attending a dance at Kenosee Gardens he met a young student nurse, Vikki Dearlove. They married on September 15, 1958 and raised two daughters, Wendy and Deanna, while living in Estevan, Redvers and Carlyle. After his retirement in 1990 he formed his own company, JCM Consulting, and worked another 10 years, proudly completing 50 years in the Oil Field. During the 90’s four adorable grandchildren were born; Lucas (Kayla), Calder and Mitchel, sons of Wendy and Lindsay Clark (Estevan) and Kiel Torres, daughter of Dee May (Valemount, BC) and Rolando Torres. Those grandchildren became the focus of his attention; from babyhood, to teens playing sports, to young adults seeking their freedom. What wonderful memories shared. John enjoyed nature and outdoor recreation; tenting, boating, canoeing, hiking, skiing and sightseeing at many parks across Canada and USA. Summer highlights with his grandchildren were combined summer vacations at Clark’s cottage at Kenosee Lake, camping trips in the 5th wheel trailer and Time share adventures. He had patience for problem solving, was talented in carpentry and mechanics, and given enough time could “Fix” almost anything.

He will be deeply missed by his loving family and close friends.

Fall supper season This past weekend, various fall suppers in southeast Saskatchewan were held, all of which were of the takeout variety. Maryfield served 128, Manor 145, and Kisbey over 200. The net proceeds from these suppers are used to assist various non-profit organizations in their communities. All are hopeful that regular sit-down suppers can take place next year. How can we minimize conflict’s negative effects?

Each of us has a different way of managing it. Some people try to avoid conflict at all costs, some actively seek it out and some people handle conflict head on. Knowing how you handle conflict will take a moment of thoughtful introspection, but this will help you resolve future conflicts more efficiently and help guide you to areas of im-

provement.

Conflict happens when two or more people have opposing views on a topic or situation. It is important to note that conflict is a natural part of life and relationships. Those who are able to handle conflict in a healthy way usually have improved mental wellbeing.

Conflict arises when communication breaks down, thus can be alleviated by engaging in active listening and effective communication techniques.

There are many com-

munication barriers that may lead to conflict if not addressed. These may include: • Assumptions – Assuming you know where the conversation is going and not double checking.

• Stereotyping – Identifying someone’s experience based solely on a group they may belong to.

• Asking “Why” – “Why” questions imply judgment, blame and accusation.

• Problem solving – Instead of listening you offer a solution without

being asked.

• Distractions – Using your phone or having too much going on in the background.

• Tone of voice – Using a tone that is condescending shuts down conversation.

These barriers cause communication to break down in relationships which leads to conflict.

Actively avoiding these areas can help to address and resolve conflict.

Other tips to resolve conflict in a healthy way include choosing the right time to talk where those

involved are relaxed and able to pay attention.

State your point in a positive way that focuses on your feelings and the situation rather than the other person’s role by using “I” messages. Lastly, look for a solution that works for everyone. This is your chance to not only be heard, but listen to the other person’s response.

You may not always be able to resolve the dispute, but it is healthy and important to be able to consider compromise.

When conflict in a relationship is unhealthy,

such as one partner becoming physically or emotionally abusive, Envision Counselling can provide resources or counselling.

YouthBiz contest open to students for entries Students in southeast Saskatchewan have been hard at work this fall, dreaming up creative business ideas and pre-

paring their business entries for the 15th annual YouthBiz contest.

This award-winning youth entrepreneurship program is offered by Community Futures (CF) Sunrise, to encourage young people to experience the world of microbusiness.

“We’ve seen a tremendous amount of interest in YouthBiz this year. Teachers and students are excited to explore business concepts and discover how businesses are started in Sas-

katchewan,” said Verna O’Neill, general manager of CF Sunrise.

YouthBiz has been making an impact in the lives of youth, with many examples of its effects showcased in the southeast region over the years.

Most notable this year is the experience of one past YouthBiz participant, Katelyn Lascelle.

Katelyn grew up in Weyburn, participated in YouthBiz with her Grade 7 class and went on to become an educator herself.

She now teaches at Sacred

Heart School in Estevan, and this year she chose to involve her Grade 7 class in the YouthBiz contest.

“YouthBiz is a fun and engaging project that allows students to discover their passions and interests. It connects to many of our learning objects in the classroom, which leads to a rich learning experience,” said Lascelle. “When I participated in YouthBiz, my business idea was a unique and stylish clothing line and store that I wanted to open. I was

very interested in design and fashion at the time and wanted to put my creativity to good use.”

Another young entrepreneur that is currently putting her creativity to good use is Kamryn Doud from Radville. Kamryn is entering the YouthBiz contest this year, and will be writing about her jewelry design business, Dzigns. She makes fashionable and fun earrings and is preparing for a busy Christmas season.

“I have an Instagram page with the handle

dzign.doud and also will be at the Santa Supermarket trade show in Radville on November 20,” commented Doud. Writing about her business for the YouthBiz contest has helped her to think of many more aspects about her small business development.

The YouthBiz contest entry deadline is Thursday, Nov. 18, and student awards will be announced by mid-December. The sponsors of this program are Information Services Corp (ISC) and SaskTel.

Carlyle RCMP investigating vandalism in Arcola The Carlyle RCMP is requesting the public's assistance with an incident earlier this year.

• • • Conservation officers are seeking the public’s assistance with a recent incident in southeast Saskatchewan.

According to a post Tuesday evening on the SaskTip Facebook page, Moose Mountain conservation officers received a call to the Turn in Poachers line, regarding unlawful hunting on posted land without permission. The incident occurred east of grid road 605 and north of Kisbey.

Witnesses observed four individuals in a white Ford truck shoot a cow elk on posted land, then use a tow strap to drag the animal into Moose Mountain Provincial Park to field dress and load the animal.

Officers attended the location and evidence was collected at the scene, but officers need your help in identifying the people responsible.

If you know any of the four individuals responsible, or saw anything in the area that may help further the investigation, call the Turn in Poachers line at 1-800-667-7561. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

The Moosomin Generals are the Prairie Girls Football League champions. The Generals played the Yorkton Lady Gridders on Oct. 31 at Moosomin. The Generals won the game 2618. Local players are Charlie Mondor, Monroe Mondor and Amaya Drumm.

Dexter Mondor is their dedicated coach. Congratulations to all.

Sympathy to Kevin and Bev Kay on the passing of Kevin's father, Henry Kay of Belleville, Ont. He died on Oct. 25 at the age of 84 years. He leaves his wife Donna and their family of Kevin (Bev), David (Patty), Philip (Cynthia) and Brian (Amy) and also grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Kevin and Bev travelled to Belleville to attend the funeral service on Nov. 2 Gail Engle accompanied her daughter Nancy and son-in-law Stephen Eckert of Calgary on a trip to the east coast. They spent a week in Halifax where they visited with Gail's

grandson, Alex Eckert. Gail also spent some time visiting with family in Calgary.

Word has been received of the passing of Dennis Gillich at the Regina General Hospital on Oct. 8. He passed away just days before his 77th birthday. His funeral service was held at Carscadden Funeral Chapel in Moosomin and interment was at the Riga Cemetery. He was married to the former Joan Shire.

Julie Hamilton spent a couple of weeks recently visiting with her mother, Helen Shiers, in Halifax.

The Community was saddened to hear of the passing of Adrienne Hambleton. She passed away, following an accident on Oct. 18 at the age of 36 years. She leaves two sons, Kaden and Lucas Ward, her parents, Randy Hambleton and Heather Jacques (Steven) and her sisters Randine (Mike) and Dichelle and their families and her grandfather, Rene Jacques. A funeral is being planned for a later date.

The Town of Carlyle and R.M. of Moose Mountain have awarded four local organizations funds to assist them in improving their facilities.

Through their joint Recreation & Culture Funding Capital Grant program, applications are reviewed every September and March.

For September 2021, $10,000

was awarded to the Carlyle & District Lions Club for the construction of new fencing at Lions Park ball diamond No. 6; $5,000 was provided to the Carlyle Golf Club to assist with the drilling of a secondary water well; $2,452.55 was donated to the Carlyle Library for new shelving; and $3,000 was awarded to the Rusty Relics Museum for painting and other renovations.

Nov. 1 found us still enjoying beautiful fall days with frost overnight and sunshine the next day.

Our lovely lady Mariann has moved to Wawota Deerview Lodge.

We will miss her. We welcomed back Ralph after his stay away.

Our courtyard has an altogether new look. Angela and her crew of the Maryfield High School graduation class put summer to bed and now when the lights come on at our "lightup,” it will be amazing. Thank you.

Inside, the autumn and Halloween decor has been beautiful. We packed some goody bags for our Hal-

loween visitors. We first had three little playschool children singing us a song and bringing some pumpkin pictures to put up. Strawberry Shortcake gave us a good laugh as her wig kept falling in her eyes. She took it off and threw it on the floor. They were so cute and we thank them again for coming.

Oct. 31 brought around 57 kids and such a variety of costumes. We enjoyed them all and thanks for stopping in.

Our afghan quilt has been on display and tickets have been on sale. All proceeds will go to the tenants’ fund.

The afghan is very attractive, if I do say so myself.
