Hockey has been Carman Whitfield’s life

By Gord Paulley To the more veteran hockey fans in southeast Saskatchewan, the Whitfield family is synonymous with that sport and the Observer recently caught up with Carman Whitfield for an interview.

In the 1960s and the 1970s, Whitfield was one of the premier senior hockey players in the southeast. He played junior B hockey in Carnduff, and in the late ‘60, helped the Alameda Aces win the Southeast Hockey League before they joined the Big Six as the Moose Creek Beavers.

Whitfield played with the Beavers for nearly 10 seasons and his accomplishments are noted in the “History of the Big Hockey League 19591999,” compiled over 20 years ago by Craig Kickley.

From 1971 to 1976, Whitfield was the team’s top scorer and finished in the league’s

top 10 for six straight years. He won the 1972-73 Big Six Hockey League scoring race.

Said Whitfield: “Nearly 50 years ago, the southeast fielded some great teams and I was honoured to have played against some of the best, Wayne Duncombe and Jake Steeves from Carnduff, Garnie Currie of Wawota, Dennis Toms of Redvers, and the Jarvis brothers from Carlyle.

A lot of good times and a lot of great memories.” As a footnote, his father Grant is a pastpresident of the Big Six Hockey League.

Whitfield now focuses on his family and five of his grandchildren play competitive hockey. Jayden Davis, who is 22, is a left-winger with the University of Regina Cougars. Cody Davis, 19, also plays left wing and is with the Estevan Bruins. Kiley Davis, 17, is a defenceman for the Weyburn U18 AAA Gold Wings female

team out of Weyburn.

Another granddaughter, 17-year-old Caitlyn Heunison, is a leftwinger for the U18 AA team in Okotoks, Alta.

And 15-year-old Colton Whitfield plays high school hockey in Providence, R.I. Whitfield travels to and watches a minimum of three games per week and flies to Rhode Island annually. In Providence, his son Trent is an assistant coach of the Boston Bruins’ American Hockey League team.

Trent, now 44, played 194 games in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues and Boston.

Hockey has been a big part of Whitfield’s life and he lives and breathes the sport, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One of his fondest memories occurred in January 1997, when he and his father Grant travelled to Geneva, Switzerland. It was there that

Trent helped Canada win that year’s World Junior Hockey Championship.

Now retired and 70 years of age, Whitfield moved to Manor Bay in Carlyle two years ago.

He previously farmed and lived 10 kilometres northwest of Alameda.

In addition to grain farming, he also had a cow-calf operation and a PMU barn of 100 horses back in the 1980s.

Whitfield has four children and 10 grandchildren, with five boys and five girls.

Six months ago, his father Grant turned 100 years old and now lives in Regina. Every day, he walks his oneyear-old Norwegian elk hound, Beau, for over two miles up and down the streets of Carlyle.

While still a puppy at heart, Beau now weighs over 65 pounds.

Get into the spirit of Christmas with Adopt a Family in Kipling

By Laura Kish A Kipling town councillor has come up with a way to celebrate Christmas by giving back.

After pondering over a particular idea for a while, Makyla Stender, councillor for the Town of Kipling, decided it was time to present her idea to the rest of the council.

The idea was presented as a community program, Adopt a Family.

“It’s a really hard thing to get to the point to admit you need help, but this idea has been started just because there is someone else out there just wanting to bless your family,” explains Stender.

“I had seen it being done in the city and other communities and when I ran for council I thought that this is something that I’d like to implement. After do-

ing some research and talking to a few people, I thought this would be a viable idea so I presented it to council.”

It was unanimous … everyone thought it would be a great idea.

“There is such a need in the community,” comments Stender. “People may not see it but it exists.”

“We don’t want anyone at Christmas to go hungry,” says Stender.

“The thought of kids waking up Christmas morning with no gifts under the tree … that just doesn’t sit right with me.

If I can do something about that, I’m going to.

That’s where the idea of Adopting a Family came from.”

An application form is available for families who would like to adopt.

There is also a registration form for families who are recipients to fill out.

They will state on the form the ages of their children, their interests, and also if they have any food allergies.

Please refer to the Town of Kipling Facebook page for instructions on adopting a family or email Stender directly.

Everything remains completely confidential.

Stender will co-ordinate the dropoffs for the families who are recipients to ensure they will receive their package before Christmas.

“I have had such good response from people in the community wanting to Adopt a Family and take part,” says Stender, who adds, “it’s amazing.”

“I don’t want anyone to be missed out on the receiving end,” explains Stender.

Once someone has agreed to adopt a family, the donor will receive

details on what ages to buy a gift for, their interests and food allergies the recipient may have in order to buy the ingredients for a Christmas meal. Drop off your items with Stender.

“I’m really excited about it. I’m just waiting on recipient families so I can match everyone up.”

“There shouldn’t be any embarrassment in admitting you may need help.”

A lot of people, at one time or another, have been in this same position.

Stender can’t stress enough that the confidentiality of this is of the most importance to her.

It’s hoped that registrations can be in by Nov. 29.

Deliveries will start to be made Dec. 17.

“I’m hoping this idea will continue year after year.”

COVID-19 pediatric vaccinations approved for Saskatchewan Health Canada has now approved the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine for use in five to 11 year olds, and more than 112,000 doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive in Saskatchewan within days, enough to immunize every child in that age group.

Parent or guardian consent will be required.

"This is welcome news for families that

want the protection that immunization provides for their children against serious disease," Health Minister Paul Merriman said. "The immunization of this age cohort will also help to reduce transmission of the virus and ensure that children can continue to enjoy their friends and activities."

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will offer the pediatric

vaccines across the province in 221 clinics in 141 communities. A variety of clinics will be offered, including walk-in, booked appointments and extended hours for added convenience.

Vaccinations will also be available for five to 11 year olds from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) and participating pharmacies.

Clinics will also be delivered in more than 100 schools with a focus on ensuring parent or guardian attendance to support the children. Information on in-school clinics will be shared with parents and students directly.

when the pharmacies have received their supply of pediatric vaccine.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, children under 12 years now account for the highest number of new COVID-19 infections. Clinical trials showed children five to 11 years old had very good immune responses to the vaccine with 90.7 per cent efficacy when they re-

ceived two doses at least 21 days apart.

The optimal interval between doses is eight weeks. However, families may choose to receive the second dose as early as 21 days after the initial dose.

Carlyle’s Elsie Cameron celebrates 106th birthday

By Gord Paulley A resident of Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle celebrated her 106th birthday on Nov. 18.

Elsie Cameron, born in 1915, turned 106 and the Observer visited with both Elsie and her niece, Shirley McCarron. McCarron provided some background.

“My aunt was born in 1915 in Isley, Alberta.

Elsie had six siblings, all boys. Her brothers would brag that there were six boys and every one of them had a sister. They thought it was really funny when people would think that their parents, Mary and Lynden Campbell, had 12 children. Her parents and all seven kids moved back to the Carlyle area in the 1920s when Elsie was a young girl.

“Elsie married Eion Cameron in 1939. They had two children, my first cousins, Ken and Maryline. Elsie lived in her own house until the ripe old age of 96 or 97, at which time the family sold her home. She

moved to Moose Mountain Lodge on June 18, 2015.

“Elsie never had a driver’s licence or had any desire to drive for that matter. But she loved to travel to see her children and grandchildren. She would hire someone to drive her to the airport from Carlyle to Regina and thought nothing of boarding a plane all by herself even when she was in her nineties.

“When Elsie lived in her own home she would walk downtown every day to pick up her mail or some groceries.

She loves keeping active playing cards. She continues to play even after moving into the lodge and can beat anyone at cribbage, smiling as she did. Elsie loves to dress impeccably, making sure that all her clothes match. She gets up in the morning and puts on her makeup.

“Elsie always makes sure her hair is perfectly in place before she lets you take her picture. She has been known to make you delete a picture if she thinks she doesn’t look

good and make you do it all over again.

“For many years, if you visited the lodge, you would spot Elsie walking around, always carrying her purse. She fell one day and badly bruised her face. The lodge gave her a walker but she had a real dislike for it and didn’t think that she needed it. When she was 105, she fell and broke her hip during the lockdown. She travelled by ambulance to Regina for a complete hip replacement and returned home just a few days later.

“During her childhood, Elsie and her brothers attended Robinson School. They drove by horse and buggy in the summer and a cutter in the winter. When they were kids, Carlyle had an annual fair. Their father would give each of them 25 cents. Sometimes their uncle would come to visit and gave them another quarter.

They would go to the fair thinking they were rich. Back in the day, three gallons of gas cost a dollar. Quite a change

On her birthday, she was alert, prim,

and proper, and of course without a hair out of place. The lodge

was decorated for her, and birthday cake was served.

Cornerstone board receives human resources report One might suggest that the human resources portfolio is near the top of the list for most important sectors within any school system.

So, on Nov. 17, during the regular business portion of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division’s (SECPSD) meeting held in the conference room at the division’s head office in Weyburn, deputy director of education Keith Keating provided an update on that sector’s state of affairs.

Keating, who serves as the human resources manager as part of his duties, noted the mandate and organizational chart for SECPSD had not changed. There are 503.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching positions being filled showing a decrease of 25.6 positions due mainly to changes in operations attributed to the ongoing pandemic demands that temporarily took students out of physical classroom settings into virtual lessons or home schooling.

He noted that required additions in staffing for the remote learning practices offered by the division’s Cyber Stone Virtual School plus

a slight decrease in enrolments.

Keating pointed out there were 42 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions for response to intervention needs and another 38 positions for learning support.

SECPSD also has 145.2 FTE education assistants on the payroll along with 21.43 FTE library technician positions and 47.81 FTE administration assistants.

On the transportation side, Keating said there are 141.5 school bus FTE positions, up slightly due to the fact the division took on some additional routes that had once been contracted out to First Student, a private bus contractor. There were also 80.6 FTE caretaking positions being covered during these vital times of protecting students from COVID-19.

Keating said contracts with CUPE and SEIU, the two unions representing contracted personnel, will be coming to a conclusion in the summer of 2022. They were signed in 2018.

The deputy director also spoke of the various challenges that deal with the ongoing pandemic issues

including risk management and staff shortages due to quarantine leaves. He mentioned the challenges of the recruitment of educators and consultants in key positions such as in administration, French, mathematics, sciences and speech language pathology as well as filling roles in smaller rural schools.

“These have always been a bit of an issue,” he told the board. So not all the challenges were relatable to the pandemic.

Recruitment now has additional challenges since “we can’t always do face-to-face interviews,” he said. But, on the other hand, the division’s remote/virtual recruitment and hiring process is well defined and effective.

A first step in an administrator development and induction project was created but then delayed due to the COVID situation, but will be re-launched in a timely manner, he suggested, as will training and development of educators for specialized assignments.

but teachers and support staff have been collaborative in their efforts to ensure these student shifts don’t restrict the learning processes.

Keating said SECPSD will again be attending hiring fairs offered by the provinces’ two universities in a virtual format and will accept online applications, as before. He said they have been able to emerge from these sessions with a good pool of applicants, as well as several applicants from Brandon University in Manitoba.

In response to a question from Weyburn trustee Melanie Sorenson, Keating said there is an advantage when interviews are conducted in face-to-face settings, but there is also some efficacy in virtual interview sessions, especially if there is a challenge posed by geographical distances, such as an application by a potential employee in Ontario or Alberta.

There is a current cyber program that provides additional efficiency in recruitment for cross-Canada applications that is gaining ground and is being used by SECPSD right now. Although many of the province’s other

divisions have been slow to pick up on it, other provincial school systems have signed on at an 85 to 100 per cent level while Saskatchewan divisions have languished at an eight per cent take up.

“With the new system, you can post a job once and it goes to several sites to be viewed,” Keating noted.

The deputy director concluded his report by giving the trustees a review of the division’s safety management system that will conclude next June and the system that allows SECPSD to track employee certification electronically.

Responding to a question following the report regarding employee vaccination status, he noted that over 87 per cent of SECPSD’s 1,101 employees have been fully vaccinated. Those not vaccinated are required to be tested for COVID on a weekly regular basis and test negative before being allowed to attend.

The integration of regional library systems into schools in the division, is also moving along well in Carlyle and more recently in Maryfield, he said in conclusion.

Provincial government losing focus

By Murray Mandryk If it seems to you that the Saskatchewan legislature hasn’t been working all that well of late, it’s probably because it hasn’t.

Even at the best of times, it’s tough to make this place work.

We are a jurisdiction just slightly smaller than Texas with, at last count, 1,179,906 people.

A Saskatchewan government must ensure everyone has heat, light, power, water and telephone and Internet, plus good roads. Our government must see to it that everyone has decent and affordable access to schools and hospitals, plus ensure that people are safe and secure.

At any time in the history of Saskatchewan, this is a pretty formidable to-do list, but it’s that much more formidable amidst what’s now the fourth wave of a global pandemic that’s unfortunately killing more people. At the top of the government’s to-do list is getting reluctant people vaccinated.

Unfortunately, the Saskatchewan Party government inability to properly focus on immediate problems or long-term ones is where it seem to have gone awry this fall.

The above population numbers really tell the tale of why Premier Scott Moe’s talk this fall sitting of land-locked Saskatchewan being a “nation within a nation” is especially silly.

One fully gets the frustration with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberal government that views Saskatchewan as insignificant and doesn’t seriously consider the challenges we face as an agriculture/natural resource-based economy servicing a sparse population over a vast area.

One even gets why Moe and the Sask. Party might think this is was a good tactical approach with Ottawa … or at least, why a government might say this to appease equally frustrated voters.

But to be talking about being “more independent” from Ottawa or the rest of Canada at a time when you are signing provincial/federal agriculture deals or when you have to send your ICU patients to other provinces because your own ICUs are filled to capacity is more than a little troubling.

The reality is that even if Moe was just talking about taking charge of more things that normally fall under federal jurisdiction — policing, tax collection and even immigration — he is talking about things that add costs to a province that was cash-strapped long before this pandemic came along.

In what way is this helpful to the average Saskatchewan voter in a place where we already have to deal with enough problems?

One gets that in a province of a million people, there are a million problems.

The story during this fall sitting of five-year-old Conner Finn — whose rare disease required his parents to take him to the University of Minnesota for an $832,000 bone marrow transplant — should make you sympathize with the really tough daily choices.

But given the million problems a government must face on any given day, does it really make sense for government to make even more problems for itself at the Saskatchewan legislature?

For example, was it really all that important or even necessary to move a bill for what seems to be another security detail at the Saskatchewan legislature that already has top-notch security provided by exRCMP officers in the sergeant-at-arms office?

Wouldn’t that money be better spent on policing in rural Saskatchewan that likely has a greater crime problem than the Marble Palace?

It’s hard enough for Saskatchewan government to deal with the problems we have. We don’t need to create new ones.

The messages are loud, unrelenting and entirely at odds with each other. One day, two events: Black Friday versus Buy Nothing Day. In this corner…

Black Friday. Blockbuster deals. More for less. Bargains too good to pass up.

And in this corner … Buy Nothing Friday; a counter movement asking people to reconsider the way they spend. End the overconsumption. Stop grabbing at deals. Buy nothing.

We are a culture that is very proficient

at amassing mountains of belongings. But no matter how much we have, it seems a good deal is hard to pass up.

So we buy more, more and more, particularly at a time of year when the pressure to purchase is expected. But then we don’t know what to do with it all.

For a number of years, people have been taking part in the 30-Day Declutter Challenge. On Day 1 you get rid of one item, on Day 2 you get rid of two things, and so forth until Day 30 when a remarkable 30 items are selected for disposal.

When you do the math it’s a grand total of 465 items that you sold, donated or tossed.

Those that have done it say spreading it out over a month is easier than trying to jam it all into a weekend. Yet after finding the energy and ambition to do it once, maybe twice, all too quickly things begin to amass again.

Some report feeling back at square one and are overwhelmed by the decision making and sorting that is required yet again.

That’s why a big part of the equation needs to be keeping our

belongings pared down and resisting the urge to add more.

Most of us have things packed in boxes, sitting on shelves or tucked away in closets that we never use.

Maybe it’s stuff we’ve forgotten is even there or maybe it has outworn its usefulness to us. Meanwhile so many go without. Without blankets or pillows.

Without coats or mitts.

Without towels, dishes or books. The things that pile up in some homes and become something of a storage nuisance are items that are completely beyond the reach of so many others.

We can easily talk ourselves into purchases, especially when good deals are being offered, but can we as readily talk ourselves out of them?

Perhaps there’s a way we wouldn’t have to. It doesn’t need to be either/or, does it?

Maybe cousin Eddie doesn’t need another sweatshirt, but the charity trying to provide warm clothing in an inner city could sure make use of it. Auntie Ellie might not need another novel, but plenty of people with

little access to books could have their lives enriched by one. It’s not about buying nothing, but about buying and giving to those who need it. To strangers.

To those wondering how they will put food on the table Christmas Day – or any other day for that matter.

All kinds of opportunities also exist to purchase gifts in the name of your loved ones to be given to people in regions all across the globe. You can buy goats, school supplies, bees, water filters and so much more for people you will never meet but whose lives could be changed because of your gift. That’s got to be better than any deal any day of the week.

We live in a culture of excess, yet amongst us are those who are hungry, cold and lacking so much. Instead of looking for better deals, or cutting out buying all together, maybe we just need to seek out different destinations for our dollars. Take advantage of the deals and see it as an opportunity to bless others. It’s about what you want your money to do. And it can do a lot. That’s my outlook.

Amusement centre returns

Carlyle OneChurch is pleased to announce that their Playland amusement centre is again open for the winter. Hours are from 10 a.m. until noon Mondays and Tuesdays. Said Pastor Matt Redstone: “The coffee is on and everyone is welcome.

Audrey Trombley and Carol Flynn remain as chair and vice-chair of Cornerstone board There were no surprises and no significant changes to the composition and organization of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division governance model during the division’s annual organizational meeting on Nov. 17.

The organizational session was conducted the same day as the board’s regular open public meeting in their Weyburn head office.

Audrey Trombley and Carol Flynn were again selected by their fellow board members to lead as chair and vicechair, respectively, for another year. Both were elected by acclamation with Estevan trustees Eric McCrimmon and Kevin Keating providing the nomination motions.

It was noted that for Trombley and Flynn, the roles of chair and vicechair are quite familiar to them since at least one of them has been in those executive positions

since 2005-06, with the exception of a two-year stint when former trustee Harold Laich was the chair. During his time in that office, Flynn and Trombley were selected to serve in the roles of vice-chair.

Trombley represents Cornerstone's Subdivision 5, which has schools in Fillmore, Stoughton, Midale and Macoun.

Flynn represents Subdivision 1, which includes Moosomin, Wapella and Rocanville.

Cornerstone trustees were also appointed to a number of committees.

Keating and McCrimmon will be part of an ad hoc committee on the future of Estevan facilities. Jim Vermeersch and Tami Scott will be part of a similar committee for the future direction of Carlyle facilities.

Vermeersch represents Division 3, which has schools in Carlyle, Arcola, Manor, Maryfield and Wawota; and Scott is

Trombley and Flynn have observer status for bargaining.

Flynn will be the representative on the Saskatchewan School Boards Association’s public section, while Kevin Keating will be the representative for the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association annual general meeting, with Scott as the alternate.

Kipling faced Watrous and won 2-1 (13-25, 2520 and 15-12).

The gold medal game was between Carnduff and Kipling, with the Carnduff Tigers winning 2-1 (2025, 25-16 and 15-11).

Carnduff Tigers coach Ryan Nichols praised his team’s play throughout the year.

“The Carnduff Senior Girls' Volleyball Team competed in seven invitational tournaments throughout the school year. Our team was made up of 10 players - two Grade 12s (Alex Jensen and Jamie Levesque), three Grade 11s (Wynter Cowan, Brooke Gardiner and Caitlin Bolduc), four Grade 10s (Payton Hollinger, Natalie Barber, Tessa Lanski and Presley Barber) and one Grade 9 (Anesa Nichols).

“The team is coached by Ryan Nichols, Michelle Sweeting and Kylie Matiowsky. The team won Langenburg invite, took second place at Conferences and first place at 3A Regionals, hosted in Carnduff. The team won 14 sets and lost only one during the provincial tourney.”

Kipling Magyars coach Monica Olson comments on her team: “It has been a very eventful and successful volleyball season for these dedicated athletes,” said Olson. “After going through the fall of 2020 with just six weeks of practice, it was a dream come true to have a full season of practices and tournaments. The team started strong, winning the Mega Volley tournament in Arcola and Carlyle on Sept. 10th.

Then adversity struck in mid-September when the team captain separated her right shoulder and Kipling School became a COVID-19 hotspot.

“This meant that their home tournament was cancelled and some team members missed practices and tournaments. But the team fought back and found a rhythm in mid-October when they placed third at a 15-team tournament in Moose Jaw, featuring many large schools. The girls also won the tournament in Esterhazy on October 23rd.”

The competition in the playoffs leading to provincials was fierce, she said, but the team

persevered and earned their spot by placing second at regionals.

“At the 3A Provincial Championships in Shellbrook, the team went undefeated until their hard fought final match against Carnduff. They came home proud with silver medals, knowing that they made history at their school and that they would renew their goal to compete at the provincial championships again.

These girls are an inspiration to many as they develop into highly skilled players and wonderful young ladies. Well done Magyars.”

Other southeast teams competing in provincials this past weekend. The Gordon F. Kells High School Cougars, coached by Trent Johnson and Sara Campbell, played in 2A Girls in Naicam.

They went 4-0 in their Pool B standings and lost to Harvest City in the playoffs.

The Wawota Parkland Wildcats, coached

by Jill Sweeting, played in 1A Girls in Davidson/Loreburn.

They went 3-1 in their Pool B standings and lost out to Edam in the playoffs.

By Laura Kish Kipling hosted the SHSAA 3A Regional Volleyball Championships on Nov. 19 and 20 with seven teams participating.

Other than the host Kipling Magyars in Pool B, the other two teams included the Assiniboia Rockets and the Briercrest Cougars. Pool A teams included the Esterhazy Warriors, Oxbow Prairie Horizons School Black Knights, Regina Christian Grizzlies and Carnduff Education Complex Tigers.

Many parents, grandparents, siblings and friends came out to cheer on their team and show their support.

“After a missed season last year, I would like to ac-

knowledge that it’s been an amazing feeling to be back in the gyms filled with our athletes, families and friends.

The sportsmanship and class displayed throughout the weekend makes me proud to be a part of this tournament,” said Magyars coach Rhett Larsen.

Carnduff finished first in Pool A with a 3-0 record, followed by Regina Christian (21), Oxbow (1-2) and Esterhazy (0-3).

Assiniboia topped Pool B at 2-0, while Kipling was 1-1 and Briercrest was 0-2.

Carnduff beat Kipling in 2-0 (25-17 and 25-14) in one semifinal, while Assiniboia defeated Regina Christian 2-1 (22-25, 25-21 and 15-8) in the other.

Kipling defeated Regina Christian 2-0 (25-21 and 2513) in the bronze medal game.

The gold medal game was between Carnduff and Assiniboia with Carnduff winning 2-0 (25-13 and 25-15).

Carnduff, Assiniboia and Unity will advance to provincials in Unity.

Carnduff Tigers coach Marcel Macfarlane comments on his team: “I am very pleased with our team’s performance through the season with competition in many challenging tournaments. We have demonstrated substantial development as a team and are very happy to be playing again after a long COVID break, missing the 2020 season.

“I was very pleased with

our execution throughout the regional tournament. We are extremely excited to travel and compete in Unity.”

Larsen discussed his team’s play.

“The senior boys volleyball season was very successful. We had a slow start in September due to some COVID cases at school but after that we were rolling and had some very good games through October and attended some tournaments in Carnduff, Oxbow and Lumsden, and we hosted our own tournament,” said Larsen.

“All the tournaments were very successful and we received many compliments from the other teams. The boys have worked very hard practicing twice a week some-

times a game during the week and weekend tournaments.

We weren't sure how this year would go but with some dedicated athletes we've been able to be very successful.”

The Kipling players are looking forward to provincials.

“We have a bright future for volleyball at Kipling School with lots of great athletes. They've made us all very proud and we are excited that the boys have a chance to represent our school at provincials.”

“I would like to thank all seven teams and their fans for attending this tournament, as well as all the volunteers, and to the game officials for providing excellent game calling,” Larsen added.

Carlyle Cougars open Big Six Hockey League season The Carlyle Cougars were in action during the opening weekend of the Big Six Hockey League season.

Carlyle dropped a 3-2 decision to the Oxbow Huskies on Nov. 19 in Oxbow. It was Oxbow’s first game back in the league since the 2018-19 season, as they had taken a break for the past two campaigns.

Derek Fleck opened the scoring for Carlyle late in the first period.

The two teams traded goals in the second, with

Liam Rutten scoring for Oxbow to tie the game and Jon Gaudet replying with a goal for Carlyle a short time later.

Brycen Odgers scored midway through the third period to knot the game up again, and Rutten scored his second of the game with 9:38 to play in the game.

Ryan Kulyk was in goal for Carlyle, while Cody Levesque was the goalie for Oxbow.

Also that night, the Redvers Rockets edged the Bienfait Coalers

5-4, and the Moosomin Rangers trounced the Midale Mustangs 11-2 in Moosomin’s first Big Six game in more than 15 seasons.

In the game between Redvers and Bienfait, Drew Hoff had two goals and an assist for the Rockets, and Tie Braun, Daylin Smallchild and Bradey Fidierchuk also scored for Redvers.

Dylan Herzberg, Dallas Kickley, Kaelan Holt and Wyatt Garagan notched Bienfait’s goals.

Two games were played the following night: the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings pounded the Mustangs 11-2 and the Carnduff Red Devils crushed the Huskies 8-1.

Trevor Geiger had a four-point night, with a goal and three assists, in Carnduff’s win over Oxbow, and Ben Hiltz scored twice.

Jackson O’Brien, Devon Carriere, Nico Anderson, Kyle Garagan and Brandon Trask were the other Carnduff

scorers.

Derek Cooney had the lone goal for Oxbow.

In the lone game Sunday, the Coalers knocked off the Carnduff Red Devils 5-4.

Taysen Holt paced the Coalers’ attack with a hat trick, while Daniel Wanner added the other goal.

Trask, Mark Moriarty and Kyle Garagan scored for Carnduff.

The Big Six has nine teams this season. The Wawota Flyers were the only team that didn’t

play on opening weekend.

Each team will play 16 games. The regular season is slated to end in early February.

Two games are slated for Nov. 26: Carlyle at Bienfait and Moosomin at Midale.

There are four games on the docket for Nov. 27: Wawota at Bienfait, Yellow Grass at Midale, Oxbow at Carlyle and Carnduff at Redvers.

All games are slated to start at 8 p.m.

Envision’s annual gift card campaign kicks off this week, to provide gift cards to clients.

“Envision Counselling hopes to connect

November has been a busy month for council

By Natalie Miller At the first meeting of the month, council received the engineering condition assessment reports from WSP Engineering for the seven municipallyowned recreation and culture facilities in our community.

The information learned from these reports will help council tremendously in planning its 2022 and future budgets, while some items identified were small regular maintenance items. Over the 10-year reporting period some of our facilities will require substantial improvements.

In the spring of 2021, the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education released its top 10 major capital priorities for the province; a replacement pre-kindergarten–Grade 12 school for Carlyle was on this list.

Through the year, council has been collecting information to understand the needs and wants of the community and the school staff to plan for the financial obligation that would be required for the Town of Carlyle.

As part of this research, council members travelled to Weyburn to tour both the

high school, the recently opened Legacy Park School and the Spark Centre as an information gathering session for a potential new school for Carlyle.

We are excited about the possibility of a new school for our community and look forward to working with the South East Cornerstone Public School Division and the Government of Saskatchewan to further our community on the priority list.

“Mental health, anxiety and domestic violence issues can get worse if there’s financial strain as well, so a holiday initiative like this can help to relieve pressure to focus on the primary healing journey,” said Andrist.

To reach the greatest number of those in

need, Andrist says that instead of toys, gift cards give individuals more choices. The preferred stores are those with gas or grocery options.

“Refurbishing is our passion,” say business owners

By Gord Paulley Glen and Patsy Craig, who are the parents of Donna Debusschere and Karen Lischka, collected antiques all their lives with Glen specializing in stripping wood furniture down to its original state.

Ten years ago, the two sisters decided to continue the family tradition adding a final stage of refinishing and repainting.

Another sibling, Gayle Wyatt, came up with the name and End Vision Refurbishing was born.

For over a decade, Debusschere and Lischka have attended countless auction sales and visited abandoned farmyards and barns throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Friends and relatives have dropped them off countless pieces of furniture and they have a virtually unlimited supply of product to either rejuvenate or alter back to its original state.

Said Debusschere: “From our childhood Karen and I have always relished the opportunity to refinish things. When

we visit an old barn or farm house, an upcoming demolishment, or a closing out of business sale, we’re just like kids waking up Christmas morning. You just never know what treasure you’ll find.”

The sisters are experts at refurbishing and use specialized stripping materials and paint.

“Chalk paint” is very expensive and some brands cost over $70 for a one litre jar. Added Lischka, “Our customers have very different tastes. Some like the furniture restored to its original state, some like it painted, and some like it looking distressed. We fully restore according to their wishes.”

Debusschere and Lischka can restore anything and everything.

Chairs, end tables, dressers, dining room tables, pianos, church pews, gramophones and even dumbwaiters. They have seen and done it all. They can convert an old dresser into a liquor cabinet, a kitchen cupboard into a baby changer.

Said Lischka: “So much good furniture is

thrown out because it is no longer in style or the owner no longer feels that it goes with their décor. Change it up by painting and adding new hardware and it is amazing the difference it makes. Suddenly it is new and useful again.

You just need imagination and a touch of creativity.”

End Vision is developing a loyal clientele in southeast Saskatchewan and the business has had repeat customers from as far away as Maidstone and Brandon. They are located on the southeast side of Carlyle on Seventh Street East.

They have a good supply of various home decor and refurbished furniture for sale.

Glimpses of grace during the past few weeks If ever there was a time when the theme for an article would be easy to capture, you’d think it would be this week.

Both good and bad have flooded the news and often, our individual lives. I won’t need to reiterate the obvious, I just want to send words of appreciation for all the efforts of so many to ease the pain of thousands of others. I’ll call them glimpses of grace.

has been a real glimpse of joy for me; after all, I’m still of use in the service of God. Then the clouds parted even more as many folks came up after the service to say they’re praying for us and asking me to take their love and greetings to him. While writing this, my ears perked up and I stopped typing long enough to truly enjoy some beautiful music playing on my computer. Too often background noise blots out words and sounds of joy. Right now someone is singing “Home is where my heart belongs” and I’m reminded that when we love the Lord, we’re heading Home.

Renovations complete at Just for Paws/Second Family Dog Lodge

By Gord Paulley Owners Andrea McEwen (Just for Paws) and Deb Andrew (Second Family Dog Lodge) are pleased to advise that their building addition is now complete and fully operational.

Located just west of Carlyle on the north side of Highway 13, customers can now drop off their pets for both lodging and grooming purposes.

The 768-square foot addition is completely finished and McEwen and Andrew wish to thank Dave Martell, their handyman from Forget, for his outstanding carpentry skills.

Dog owners can now conveniently drop off their pets at one central

location. Daycare and boarding will continue at the south portion of the Second Family Dog Lodge.

Grooming, bathing, nail trimming and training classes will be undertaken at the north Just for Paws addition. Both buildings are connected and fully winterized.

McEwen and Andrew want pet owners able to drop off their dogs for both boarding and grooming purposes during the same visit.

Said Andrew: “Pet owners often do not have the time or opportunity to groom, bathe, or nail-trim their dogs. This one time drop-off will alleviate this problem. Usually, I find that dogs are not being

groomed as often as they should be. A dog that is groomed every three to six months sees the groomers as a punishment, while a dog that is groomed every four to six weeks sees it as a part of life.” Added Andrew: “Many dog owners tell us about how excited their dogs get turning off the highway and driving to the entrance to our building. We love seeing their excited tails wiggle as them come and give us kisses.”

Just for Paws is also expanding into the sale of both premium dog and cat kibble foods, mainly but not exclusively with the Nutri-Source brand.

McEwen is also looking at selling raw food, which is

becoming more and more popular especially for larger, athletic animals. Nutritional supplements are also available.

“It’s simply not healthy to take any more on. You have to think about yourself and your own family as well.”

Keep in mind that this organization is run completely by volunteers and relies on donations to operate.

“Every rescue in Saskatchewan is on a freeze right now,” explains Werner-Paterson. “Nobody is taking in any cats right now because everyone is over full.”

“There’s always a lot….it’s a constant. I will get three, four or five calls every day. This year there were litters of seven or eight kittens instead of three or four. At this time of year with this weather we get a lot of sick kittens.”

“Since January we’ve adopted out 500 cats.

Some of those have been adopted out to B.C. For some reason B.C. has a cat shortage. We’ll sometimes send up to 65 at a time. We work really close with the rescues in B.C. and fellow rescues throughout Saskatchewan. All of the small rescues work together. We have a network where if one rescue is at their limit, another rescue will take some.”

“It’s amazing…I love it!” said Werner-Paterson.

“We’ve started a Barn Buddy program. Any of wild cats that have lived outside for up to two to three years already aren’t fans of being indoors and don’t use a litter box, it’s a $50 fee for a spayed or neutered cat to be purchased strictly to go to farms.”

Werner-Paterson can’t stress enough the importance of her message - spay and neuter, spay and neuter. It’s the difference between life and death for a lot of cats.

Cornerstone receives annual financial report The South East Cornerstone Public School Division is digging into a surplus fund to again make ends meet.

That is the bottom line reality for a third consecutive year.

“How I understand it, is that our surplus is down again and we only have about four years at most before we have no money?” asked Estevan trustee Eric McCrimmon, speaking to the division’s chief financial officer, Shelley Toth.

“Only if we realize the budgeted deficit,” she replied, noting later the current budget sees the public school division heading for another deficit of about $4.5 million this fiscal year, while the unrestricted surplus funds that stood at $26 million a year ago have now been reduced to $22.2 million.

The annual report

is now being sent to the provincial Ministry of Education for approval before it can be made public on an official basis.

But in the interim, Toth provided detailed financial figures and highlighted some key areas of the final report for the board during their Nov. 17 meeting in Weyburn.

On the surface, the 2020-21 fiscal year showed revenues of $115.8 million for Cornerstone and expenses of $111.8 million for a surplus of $4 million.

“The higher than budgeted surplus is largely a result of the impact of COVID-19,” Toth said while presenting her report.

The total on the revenue side was $3.3 million higher than anticipated, mainly due to increases in grants with $2.6 million added for expenses incurred related to COV-

ID last year, and another $1.4 million restricted for the current fiscal year.

School generated funds were down $2.1 million, again a reflection of the impact COVID had on general operations, extra-curricular activities and fundraising at the school level.

On a similar level, external services revenue was also $462,000 under budget due to reductions in cafeteria sales and shared services initiative grants that did not go forward, and the anticipated sale of two teacherages estimated at $140,000 that did not occur in the past year.

Total operating expenses were only $205,000 higher than budget but there were several significant variances, Toth told the board.

Governance expense, for example was nearly

28 per cent under budget at $133,000. School community councils spent $68,000 of their $74,000 budget, with $40,000 assigned to other governance and $28,000 for instruction and capital equipment.

Administration expenses were $99,000 or about three per cent over budget, but these expenses included $68,000 of additional expenses that were covered by grants, she explained.

Instructional expenses were down slightly at $579,000 under budget and included $2.1 million in added expenses that were reimbursed through revenue, including $1.5 million in grants for COVID related expenses.

“After adjusting for reimbursed expenses, instructional expenses were $2.4 million under budget as we saw expenses for travel, professional

development, athletic programs and substitute salaries reduced due to the impact of COVID-19,” Toth added.

Plant operations and maintenance, however, were $3.4 million over budget with most of that reimbursed through revenue with $1.5 million coming in insurance reimbursements, $906,000 in a COVID grant and the rest for additional preventive maintenance and other expenses paid by the ministry.

Student transportation expenses were $672,000 under budget, as were school generated fund expenses at $1.8 million. Complementary services were $68,000 over budget and external services were $182,000 under budget.

The tangible capital assets added $12.9 million, thanks mainly to

the purchase of 28 school buses at $3.1 million plus other vehicles, furniture equipment and computer hardware and audio-visual equipment.

There was a further $8.1 million for assets under construction, which included $8 million for the Legacy Park Elementary School and $100,000 for the completion of a bus garage.

Both of those projects are situated in Weyburn and now complete.

But when it came down to the final picture, as noted, $22.2 million remains in the unrestricted accumulated surplus which is a reduction of $3.8 million from the prior year with a further $4.5 million draw down on that surplus now anticipated for the current fiscal year, Toth told the board in response to the question of the available surplus and the time line.

In what world will God’s Kingdom come?

By Ken Rolheiser An emperor called together all the children in the kingdom and said, "It is time for me to choose the next emperor.

I am giving each of you a special seed. Come back here one year from today with what you have grown. Then I will choose my successor.”

Ling took his seed, planted it and watered it every day. Nothing grew. All the other youths bragged about their plants. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing grew. He just knew he had killed it.

After a year all the youths brought their plants to the emperor.

Sick to his stomach, Ling took his empty pot to the palace. Many of the children laughed at him.

The emperor arrived and said, "What great plants, trees and flowers you have grown. One of you will become the next emperor." He spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot and ordered his guards to bring him to the front.

The emperor announced, "One year ago today I gave you all boiled seeds which would not grow. You substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. He is the new emperor."

It is the time of year when we reflect on Judgement Day and God’s Kingdom. The liturgical year is ending, and Advent heralds a new year when the birth of Jesus will again bring the good news of God’s Kingdom.

And in our daily prayers we say, “Thy Kingdom come.”

In the story of Ling above we see the value of being faithful to truth and goodness. Deceit is from the devil, and we all fall prey when we fall from grace. Earth needs redemption, and that is the role Jesus comes to fill in the incarnation.

At the time of creation, God saw that the world was indeed good.

Our fall from grace necessitated the love and sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus announced the good news of the Kingdom – that the Kingdom is in our midst (Luke 17:21).

We should enter God’s Kingdom through the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13), not like the other children in Ling’s story who took short cuts and cheated to try to win the emperor’s favour. Our journey is made easier with Jesus’ help.

The Lamb of God will lead us to the springs of living water (Revelations 7:17). The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are innocent as children (Matthew 19:14).

The Beatitudes give us the blueprint to attain the Kingdom of God. Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for justice, the peacemakers, the merciful, the pure in heart, and those persecuted for the sake of righteousness (Matthew 5:3-10).

Jesus established a Kingdom of love. His sacrifice wedded heaven to earth, our world. That is the message in the Easter proclamation that dates back more than 1,200 years to a Latin song that proclaims God delivering his people, us, from slavery to sin.

The light of Christ

dispels the darkness of sin and death. His body and blood are food for

the journey that ends on judgement day where Hell is a place outside the

sacred city. Only those who choose to will go there. As for me and my

house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).

By Myrna Olson A successful Wawota Christmas Market was held at the Village Inn last Saturday. Vendors rented 30 tables and there was a large variety of items for Christmas giving.

Dennis Niebergall, Carmen and Cash from Stony Plain, Alta., spent several days visiting with Stan and Bev Niebergall.

While here, Dennis and Cash enjoyed some hunting.

Sympathy to the family of Ron Smulan of Regina who passed away on

Nov. 13. He was 79 years old. He leaves his wife Sheila (New) and family of Carla, Shannon and Ryan, their spouses and family. He also is survived by brothers Ken (Bernie) and Garry (Gaye). A funeral service was held at the Wawota United Church on Nov. 19. Interment was in the Fernley Cemetery.

Denise Denouf has purchased the former home of Dan and Margurite Van Dresar on First Street. She says she now has room for all of her plants.

Norman Meyers is now a resident of the Moosomin Nursing Home.

Wawota would like to welcome Katlynn Hann and Damon Delory from Portaux Basque, N.L. They are living in Kayle Swanson’s house on Walter St. and they work at Vaderstad Several families are attending Canadian Western Agribition in Regina from Nov. 22-27. This year marks the 50th time that the agricultural event has taken place. Hope to have news from there for next week.

Janet Mark’s daughter, Mary Mark Ockerbloom of Philadelphia was also here to visit and one afternoon she led us in a

sing song with her mother at the piano. A very proud and happy mother at 97, as Mary hadn’t been able to visit for 2 years due to COVID. Our get well wishes are still being sent to Fred Krukoff. We miss you, especially at the singalongs.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Mildred Wilson family on the passing of her son, Grant. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Additional funding for children with autism Saskatchewan families with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will now have access to more services under the individualized funding (IF) program.

Eligible services now include life skills programs such as swimming and tutoring, as well as therapeutic day camps and summer programs, and equine therapy, in addition to the previously covered services. This announcement comes on the heels of the expansion of IF to include children with ASD ages six to 11, announced in July.

“The expansion of eligible services will make a positive impact in the daily lives of children with autism and their families,” Health Minister Paul Merriman said. “Children who experience disability deserve the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in ways best suited to them.”

“We’ve heard from parents and caregivers that they wanted more flexibility in using funding,” Social Services Minister Lori Carr said.

“We understand each child has their own unique needs, and as part of our person-centred approach to support, expanding eligible services will allow them that flexibility.”

Parents are provided funding for therapeutic interventions and family supports that best suit their child’s individual needs. An estimated 1,000 families are expected to access IF this year. These new

eligible services build on the current approved range of services which includes respite care, therapeutic equipment, and training for parents and caregivers.

In 2021-22, $10.3 million was allocated to provide $8,000 annually per child with ASD up to the age of five, and $6,000 annually per child with ASD from age six to 11.

The application form and eligible services list are available at saskatchewan.ca/autism. A registry of autism service providers is available to assist parents in locating service providers. It includes behavioural consultants, physical therapists, speech pathologists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, swimming instructors, tutors and equine therapists.

Private service providers are encouraged to sign up to be listed on the registry, and can contact autismregistry@health.gov.sk.ca for more information on how to do so.

ASD Individualized Funding is a joint program involving the Ministries of Health, Social Services and Education. It supports the goals of the 10-year Saskatchewan Disability Strategy and Saskatchewan’s Early Years Plan. The program supplements a continuum of autism services that continue to be provided in the public system, including autism consultants, support workers and rehabilitation therapists.

Joanna Catherine (Souter) Nankivell 1935 - 2021 Joanna Nankivell passed away at New Hope Pioneer Lodge, Stoughton, Sask. on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at the age of 86.

Joanna’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband of 66 years, Cliff Nankivell; son Kalvin (Kathy) Nankivell and daughter Claudia Mullis; grandchildren: Jennifer (Blair) Karlunchuck, Patricia (Kirk) Himmelspach, Carrie Nankivell (Dallas Burnett), Lyndon (Jordan) Mullis and Kaylee Mullis (Justin West); great grandchildren: Zane & Reese Karlunchuck, Mitch & Chase Himmelspach and Bailey Burnett.

A Memorial Service for Joanna was held on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. at the Kisbey Recreation Centre, Kisbey, Sask. with The Rev. Michelle Moore officiating. A luncheon took place immediately following the service, after which interment took place at the Arcola Cemetery, Arcola, Sask.

Roy Gordon Hayes, born June 14, 1936, on the family farm in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, passed away unexpectedly in Cranbrook, BC November 9, 2021.

He was predeceased by his wife and love of his life of 43 years, Eleanor (Cameron).

He leaves behind his son Bruce (Dorothy), daughter Barb, grandchildren Cory (Leisha), Mandy (Mike), great grandchildren Jade, Daniel, David, and Deagan, as well as many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Roy was a simple man with an amazing work ethic. He was happy with an “extra crispy” wiener or a piece of chocolate cake.

He was a mentor to many and shared his knowledge whenever he could. His can-do or fix anything attitude rubbed off on many.

It wasn’t all work for Roy. He loved hockey and played as a goalie on 5 different teams up until he was in his 30’s.

He had many jobs over the years. A farmer, an entrepreneur, school bus driver, maintenance man at the Village of Kennedy, truck driver, and most recently the “potty master” at Cameron Enterprises. He was known for patching himself up if it was required to get the job done.

Roy will always be remembered for his sense of humour, you never knew what would come out of his mouth. He was a kindhearted man, who would help anyone, and never asked for anything in return. Roy will be missed by all who knew him.

Carlyle Cougars win Estevan U15 house tournament The Carlyle Cougars were the class of the 12-team U15 house tournament hosted by the Estevan Minor Hockey Association.

The Cougars defeated the Weyburn Wings 8-0 in the gold medal game of the competition, which was held from Friday to Sunday at Affinity Place, the Power Dodge Arena and the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

Carlyle defeated Yorkton Choice Vending 14-1 and the Flin Flon Bombers 5-3 in the round robin. Then they edged the Swift Current Blades 7-6 in the quarter-final and routed the Melville Ice 11-1 in the semifinal round.

By Nathan Coffey The Carlyle U11 Cougars took to the ice this past weekend for the first time this season against the Redvers Rockets.

The team started off a little rusty and trailed early, but battled all afternoon and really dug in, making it quite the game. When the final buzzer sounded, it was 12-9 for Redvers.

The Cougars’ offence was led by Griffin Eaton and Grayson Bloomfield, who each notched three goals and impressed with their skill.

Trypp Flemming, Colton Dixon and Boston Shire also scored.

John Leveille, late of Weyburn, passed away Oct. 27 at the age of 90 years. He was predeceased by his parents Pierre and Gabrielle Leveille, brothers Victor, Joseph, Paul and Peter; and his sister Mary Beriault. He is survived by his wife Joan Ann; sons, Michael (Linda) and Kevin; daughters Patti (Eugene) Bert, Shaunna (Terry) Benning, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A mass was held Nov. 1. Alida community extends condolences to all Leveille and Beriault family members.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Jim and Debbie Fuller on the death of their brother Edward (Ted) Fuller, who passed away Nov. 16 at the age of 49 years. He was the youngest child of the late Reg and Marion Fuller and was raised on the farm near Alida. He is survived by his broth-

ers Jim and Don (Susan), sister Debbie and their families. There will be a Celebration of Life for Ted at a later date.

The Alida Hall and Rink Auxiliary held its annual meeting on Nov. 16. After seven years of serving the Auxiliary, the executive resigned their positions and unfortunately nobody has volunteered to take over their duties. The executive has been responsible for the community activities, plus funeral lunches, sports day canteen and fall supper.

With careful thought, it was decided to divide up the responsibilities of the executive and make each function separate, run by a new volunteer.

Three positions have been filled: Diane Potapinski for funeral luncheons, Melissa Gervais for the fall supper. Sports Day canteen might be offered to food truck operators.

This leaves the following four positions

with Nobody as leader: rink breakfasts, rink kitchen, president and vice-president.

Margaret Peet remains as secretary and Sheri Patton as treasurer. The auxiliary for decades has taken on the responsibility of the above mentioned functions in order to raise money for the community and to keep the community alive and vibrant through socializing.

Each year the group donates an average of $10,000 to the recreation board to help in the maintenance and cost of operation of the hall, rink and pool, as well as purchase many items such as stoves, freezers, deep fryers, new chairs and tables, etc.

We are very fortunate to have operational facilities in our small community not only for recreation but for family and community celebrations as well. Alida could be set to lose these community activities.

Overview: The GDI Board of Governors has representation from the (12) Regions of the Organization, who are ratified by the Provincial Métis Council (PMC) of the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan (MN—S). The PMC Member who is assigned the Education portfolio sits as the Chairperson of the Board of Governors. All persons selected to the Board of Governors will be for a period of three years.

A member who is an employee/staff person/manager of an affiliated organization of the MN—S shall not be permitted to sit on the Board of Governors of the Institute.

Responsibilities: The Board of Governors oversees the Gabriel Dumont Institute and is responsible for its operation and governance in all matters, including: to adopt policies for the effective operation of GDI; to formulate a strategic plan and to oversee its implementation; to approve annual budgets, audits and programs; to function as ambassadors for GDI and to encourage students and potential students in their study and career plans; to represent GDI to all levels of government, persons of Métis ancestry and to the public generally; and to appoint a Chief Executive Officer to be directly responsible for implementation of policy and the day-to-day management and operations of GDI. Qualifications: All appointments to the Board must be of Métis ancestry with knowledge of the cultural, historical and social circumstances of Saskatchewan Métis. Ideally the collective skills on the board will represent a number of different disciplines and perspectives. Some of the preferred skill and training areas include education or post-secondary education; finance and administration; business; human resources (personnel); law; and communications. This will ensure a wide range of skills and perspectives are available when decisions are considered.

Process: Candidates can apply directly to the MN—S region or the Institute who in turn will forward the application to the appropriate MN—S region for consideration. The MN—S region then submits the name of their selected representative forwarded from a duly called and administered regional council meeting. The name of the new board member is then sent to the PMC for ratification. Finally, the name is forwarded to the Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour for final approval.

Education Act amended to ensure safe access to schools; changes made for health facility buffer zones as well The Government of Saskatchewan is introducing legislation to protect teachers, staff and students while accessing schools. This will ensure families can access schools harassment free while vaccines are rolled out for kids 5-11.

"Similar to the protections provided for patients, staff and families accessing our hospitals it is important that our children, parents, teachers and staff are able to access schools in the province without fear of interference or intimidation," said

Education Minister Dustin Duncan. "In particular it is important to ensure our children do not feel scared or threatened."

A 50-metre safe access zone will prevent sidewalk protests or interference near schools that could potentially cause obstructions, delays or harassment for people entering and leaving school properties. There is also regulation-making authority to extend zones up to 150-metre zones.

Lawful labour picketing will still be allowed within

the safe access zones. Like hospital safe access zones, the safe zone provisions for schools will also automatically expire two years from the coming into force dates.

The announcement about the safe access to schools legislation was made shortly after the provincial government announced its plans to vaccinate children from ages five to 11 against COVID-19.

The provincial government has also passed an amendment to its legislation to create and enforce safe access zones around hospi-

tals. Any protests near hospitals must now be outside of a 50-metre perimeter to ensure people accessing the facilities aren't delayed or harassed.

"This legislation will ensure that health care providers can go to work safely and patients and their families can access health care services without feeling scared or threatened," Health Minister Paul Merriman said. "It is important to provide this protection for those accessing our hospital system."

The safe access portion

of the legislation, which also does not apply to lawful labour picketing, will expire in two years.

The Public Health (Safe Access to Hospitals) Amendment Act, 2021 also builds in flexibility to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by increasing the capacity to provide immunizations.

The legislation enables additional immunizers to assist with vaccination programs, including influenza vaccine, COVID-19 boosters and vaccines for children aged five to 11.
