Dickens Village Festival brought communities together and kicked off the Christmas season

By Ana Bykhovskaia The Dickens Village Festival made the Carlyle area giddy in a round dance of Dickens times’ festivities, looks and meals.

The 18th annual festival that took place Dec. 3-5 attracted over a thousand people from all around. For the oldstyle weekend, the hall turned into a Fizziwig’s Pub with top-notch free entertainment for hundreds of people.

The English Market Craft Sale had many people stopping by, and the Lighted Parade attracted hundreds of spectators lining up the streets on Friday and Saturday.

The Cornerstone Theatre’s play, a humourous and witty musical called Scrooge in Space, was a classic that attracted many admirers. Written by Carlyle’s own Megan McAuley, the play was performed three times.

Dickens Village Festival committee member Dianne Twietmeyer, who performed in the play, said it was one of her favourite parts of the festival, which altogether was a great event.

“It was very successful.

Everybody was extremely pleased with the turnout. We had a wonderful parade and a wonderful Christmas play by Cornerstone Theatre. And we had good weather,” said Twietmeyer. “Friday and Saturday were warm, and a lot of people came out for the street vendors selling their food, and a lot of families were lining the streets for the parade.”

The community came together to make the festival happen after a one-year break due to COVID, and Twietmeyer praised the committee for decorating the streets and the hall and everyone involved for organizing a wonderful

weekend filled with fun.

Since the pandemic remained a reality, the committee had to ensure they follow the provincial guidelines and organize an event that’s safe for everyone.

In all buildings that are overseen by the Town of Carlyle, guests had to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative test, and other health measures were followed.

“We wondered if that wouldn’t keep people away, but we had a lot of people come in and have a really good time safely,” Twietmeyer said.

The committee was worried that the festival probably wouldn’t be a go with all the issues still in place this year, but fortunately, they were able to host a great event, which went pretty close to normal.

“Some positive people came along that really wanted to do things.

“We first began planning something that was going to be on a smaller scale, just in case it all had to be cancelled at the last minute.

Carlyle Happy Gang receives donation

The Carlyle & District Lions Club recently donated a new 65-inch smart TV to the Carlyle Happy Gang. In addition, the club installed Wi-Fi to their property on Second Street West and will also cover the monthly Wi-Fi costs. This will enable the Happy Gang to rent out their premises for even more events such as training courses, birthday parties and more in the future. The Dickens English Market that was held at the Carlyle Elementary School had 27 tables and had approximately 350 guests come through. A great outing and chance to showcase all products for all small businesses, the market saw baking, sewing, Scentsy, Pampered Chef, Jams & Jellies, ColorStreet, woodworking and jewelry, just to name a few.

Many people also bought from street vendors, serving Dickens-times style meals like turkey legs, puddings and more.

Twietmeyer said that those involved with organizing the festival, as well as people in local stores, would also dress up in style suitable for Dickens’ era, which made the community look more picturesque over the weekend.

The traditional festival had many residents involved and saw many people from other communities come over. Twietmeyer said the annual Dickens weekend not only supports the local businesses and benefits many in the community but also helps put Carlyle on a bigger map.

community by bringing people into town. It kicks off the Christmas season, getting people out shopping. Cornerstone Theatre, we have been for the past several years, donating 10 per cent of our performance proceeds to the food bank,” said Twietmeyer, adding that this plan hasn’t been announced yet this year, but she assumes they will proceed with the donation.

“The festival also raises the profile of Carlyle throughout the

province and even into Manitoba. In other years, we’ve had busloads of people come down from Regina … on a shopping trip and take in the play and all the other festivities. So it definitely raises the profile of Carlyle as a place to come to. And it gets a lot of people and a lot of different groups involved,” Twietmeyer concluded.

Eli Barsi’s a “Merry Prairie Christmas” in Kipling

By Laura Kish Eli Barsi’s 13th annual Hometown Christmas was held in Kipling on Sunday, with this year’s theme being Sharing the Light of Christmas. With the blowing snow, the weather outside was a bit frightful, but the music inside was delightful.

The lights were dimmed and the curtains opened up to a winter wonderland stage decorated with snowflakes shining on the backdrop curtains, garland wrapped in mini lights across the front of the stage, and then the show began.

Joined by Barsi’s husband John Cunningham on the upright bass and harmony vocals, as well as the talented singer/songwriter Anthony Kelly on the guitar, mandolin, and harmony vocals, the performance was thoroughly enjoyed.

Special guest and fellow Kennedy native, Roy Bortolotto, an accomplished pianist and composer, delighted the audience with various Christmas selections on the piano before the show started and again during the show.

Barsi’s performances over the years have included special guests such as Brad Johner, Gary Fjellgaard, and Ronnie and Glory-Anne Prophet.

Paying homage to a good friend, the late Ronnie Prophet, she wore one of his blue jean outfits with cockatiels down the side of the pan-

tlegs and across the back of the jacket. Of course, that matched well with her shiny red cowboy boots.

It wouldn’t be a Barsi Christmas show without her trademark yodeling.

Barsi played a Cowboy Christmas selection Santa’s Yodeling Song, and as she says, “you can only yodel happy.”

A variety on instruments would be played throughout the show.

Barsi plucked at the banjo strings accompanying Kelly as he sang a favourite by Steve Earle, Nothing But a Child.

Barsi performed a number of classic Christmas carols, focused on remembering the true meaning of Christmas, but also performed her own Christmas music as well as a bit of bluegrass music thrown into the mix. This also included a song she wrote specifically for Cunningham to sing based on his childhood. It’s a song indicative of his growing up in Ontario. It was all about one of the funniest stories of his upbringing, about tree picking time at Christmas.

Halfway through the show, the performers made a slight costume change. With a quick addition of colorful Hawaiian leis and a grass skirt, they took the audience on a trip to the tropics, playing ukulele for a Hawaiian tune and then it was on to Mexico.

Cunningham drew a few whistles from the crowd as he swayed in his grass skirt.

An afternoon of camaraderie and fun was had as the audience enjoyed listening to Barsi and guests perform.

The afternoon ended with Barsi and guests all singing Silent Night as well as inviting the audience to join in.

Eli Barsi comments: “As we now have been able to perform a few more live shows we were super excited to present our 13th annual Hometown Christmas.

With all current COVID rules and compliance’s in place, we were very pleased with the awe-

some attendance and the enthusiasm of the crowd.

This show, personally, is my favourite every year and most important to present. Celebrating the true meaning of Christmas and sharing the light is a big part of our agenda. We enjoyed our time on stage with our very talented friends and guest performers.

“The past 21 months have been extra challenging with most of our work as musicians being cancelled or postponed.

However both John and I have found ways to stay in the arts and press on with other opportunities. I opened an art gallery in June of 2020 that has now expanded to

a gift boutique and art centre, Prairie Girl Gallery in Moosomin. I have continued to write music and film some live concerts as well slowly add some live shows back onto the calendar.

“Teaching guitar, bass and ukulele he has had the pleasure of working with over 95 students throughout the last year.

Too much political gamesmanship

By Murray Mandryk When it comes to most anything in life, we learn more from losing than winning.

We learn to be gracious and that how we play the game is usually more important than winning it.

We carry these lessons into our adult lives.

This makes it puzzling why those who go into politics — people who presumably grew up experiencing the same life lessons as the rest of us — often take the need-to-win-at-all-costs approach that they do.

Maybe it’s because politics tends to be an ubercompetitive way for adults to earn a living. You have to be pretty committed to a set of beliefs if you want to be involved and the stakes are pretty high when you lose.

Or maybe it is just the defence mechanism one should expect in a business where you are likely to get a lot more public criticism than most.

But what seems clear is the desire to win at all costs — to believe that everyone needs to be on your team and that those who may question what you are doing aren’t on your team — became a big problem this fall for a 14-year-old Saskatchewan Party government.

Consider the reaction of Agriculture Minister David Marit and Finance Minister Donna Harpauer to the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan after APAS suggested whether it was fair to cite Saskatchewan Crop Insurance costs as the big reason the 2021-22 deficit vaulted to $2.7 billion at mid-year.

In fairness, Harpauer has a point and probably should have made better. Added crop insurance debt is a flow-through cost based on summary financial budgeting.

But where she and Merit were wrong was in their response to APAS suggesting it acting out of “ignorance” or “deceit.” APAS was doing its job.

How problematic this was became obvious when Premier Scott Moe decided to cozy up to a group he decided he can’t fight — the Unified Grassroots movement that actually unsuccessfully took this government to court of to stop vaccine passports.

After granting its president Nadine Ness an hour-long phone call, which she and Moe described as productive, Moe continued to draw fire for giving voice to a group that has posted information on vaccinations his own medical health officers describe as misleading.

Asked about this later, Moe explained that his government listens to all sides on all issues.

The problem is, none of that has been the case for this government of late.

APAS – which some in this Sask. Party government clearly view as betraying them by being the least bit critical – clearly didn’t get treated with respect. And any farm or business group fares much better than most others when it comes to access to this government to express concerns.

But why someone like Ness had little trouble getting the Premier has everything to do with politics being seen as game about winning.

For whatever reason, Moe and the Sask. Party see Ness’s group as one having a broad-base of support – one that they don’t want to anger even if what they are advocating flies in face of the government’s own direction guided by public health professionals.

Many in the medical community are rightly livid the premier would give a voice to a group tied to vaccine misinformation simply it was about popularity.

But like all too many things in politics, it becomes all about winning, which is often about being seen as popular.

How you play the game is actually more important than winning it.

Unwrapping the gift is just the start

Shelley Luedtke Amidst the many feet of garland, multiple nativity scenes and dozens of light-up village pieces that get put up at our house at Christmas are several decorations that I can’t wait to take out of storage and hold in my hands once again.

An ornament that hung on our tree each year since I was a little girl, a snow globe that plays music, and some homemade items that a very good friend made for us.

Laurie was such an artistic, creative individual. She did beautiful sketches and paintings and could make just about any craft you can imagine.

The ones she made for Christmas are delightful: a winter landscape done in crackle paint, an adorable piece with detachable scarf, mitts

and toque for a snowman entitled Some Assembly Required and beautiful hand painted manger scenes for each of our girls.

These pieces bring with them a rush of emotion and a flood of memories when I take them out of the box and put them out for the season.

There were many gifts exchanged over the years including ones she didn’t make, but there is one among them that was very special to us. Not long after the adoptions of our daughters from Romania, Laurie brought us four beautiful dessert dishes handcrafted in Romania. She was so excited to give them and I remember her so clearly letting us know she wanted us to use them and not tuck them away in some cupboard.

She told us she would be so disappointed if we determined they were too special to use.

But they were just so pretty. Still are.

They have sat unused for years now. I tried, oh, how I tried. But I was so afraid one would get chipped or broken.

So, I put them up in a cupboard, tucked away,

out of reach. It is a regret.

In my attempt to keep them valuable, I made them unavailable. All those moments I could have enjoyed fruit or ice cream or any number of sweet treats with my girls when they were growing up. Auntie Laurie would have loved that.

We missed out on it all. All the conversation and laughter that would now be connected to those dishes. I would have loved that, but I didn’t make it happen.

We lost Laurie to kidney disease in May 2020. The Christmas decorations she made are beautiful and we treasure them for the weeks they adorn our walls. I wouldn’t dream of not hanging them up each year. The dessert bowls are beautiful as well, but I didn’t bring them out.

I did not honour Laurie’s wishes to use and enjoy them.

Even on the day we said goodbye to her, I still didn’t go and retrieve them from the cupboard. It would have been a perfect opportunity, but I let it slip through my fingers. She would have laughed as she scolded

me– oh, she had a great laugh – and told me to pull them out of the back of the cupboard once and for all.

Another friend of mine has made me promise we will do that before Christmas. And we will.

Yes, we might accidentally crack or chip one, but wouldn’t that be better than letting them languish at the back of a shelf unused, unseen and unappreciated?

I know Laurie thought so, and likely so would all those who have given us those precious gifts that are too special not to put into the hands of those who could appreciate and enjoy them.

So one evening soon we will gather with friends, and those dessert bowls will come out of the cupboard.

They will likely be filled with something rather ordinary, but sharing the moment together will be extraordinary for us. They were meant to be used so we’ll use them. Yes, we might break one, but better to break a dish than break the heart of those that gifted us with something so precious. That’s my outlook.

Wawota Flyers among the winners in Big Six games There is just one unbeaten team remaining in the Big Six Hockey League.

The host Yellow Grass Wheat Kings (3-0) edged the Redvers Rockets (2-0-1) 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night.

Yellow Grass scored three times in the second period to lead 3-0, but the Rockets responded with three of their own in the opening nine minutes of the third.

Brady Gaudet had the final two goals for

Redvers, and Remy Lamotte had the other Redvers goal.

Thomas Bauche was the Rockets goalie.

Also on Saturday, the Wawota Flyers (1-1) won 8-5 over the Midale Mustangs (0-4-1). Wawota led 3-0 after the first period and 5-1 through two before the Mustangs stormed back in the third to make the game interesting.

Devin Stewart and Jordan Fox each had two goals and two assists for

The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in many areas throughout the United States and Canada is .08. But alcohol affects people’s ability to drive

The following are some predictable effects on drivers and their ability to drive at certain BAC levels.

People with a BAC of .02 typically experience some loss of judgment and feelings of relaxation. Slight body warmth and altered mood are some other normal effects when a person’s BAC is .02.

Some typical effects of a .05 BAC include exaggerated behaviour, possible loss of smallmuscle control, such as an ability to focus the eyes, impaired judgment, lowered alertness, and release of inhibition. When behind the wheel with a .05 BAC, drivers can expect reduced coordination, reduced ability to track moving objects, difficulty steering, and a reduced response to emergency driving situations.

At .08, muscle coordination becomes poor, affecting balance, speech, vision, reaction time and hearing. People with a BAC of .08 will find it hard to detect danger and their judg-

ment, self-control, reasoning and memory will be impaired. Driving with a .08 BAC affects concentration, impairs perception and reduces drivers’ ability to capably process information, including detecting other drivers’ signals.

Short-term memory loss also is one of the predictable effects of driving with a .08 BAC. People experience a clear deterioration of their reaction time and control when their BAC reaches .10. Slurred speech, slowed thinking and poor co-ordination are some additional effects of a BAC of .10.

Carlyle area farm boasts a rich history « A9 spent at homes of families in the community. The Browns would go to the Mills family or the Tom Forsyth family and then those families came to the Brown household taking turns every Christmas. John said they took their own plates and silverware because families did not have enough dinner sets or cutlery to host dinner parties.

Pat Cann, Jean’s daughter, said that her mother told two stories about growing up on the farm. One job Jean had was to lead two horses to the dugout for water. One of the horses was a heavy horse. Soon her parents, Andrew and Margaret, grew concerned that it was dangerous. They put a stop to leading the horses to water and asked Jean to carry pails of wa-

ter to the horses.

Pat also stated that Jean talked about taking food to the field that is known as N1/2 23-5-2 W2nd. She would leave the farm in a truck and meet her father, Andrew, by the Moose Mountain Creek. He would rig up a pulley system so he could use the pulleys and the pails to get the food across the creek without anyone being in danger or losing food.

Driving food 65 kilometres away would be more relaxing than hauling pails of water to horses.

The family grew with the addition of Jean and Walter. All the children went to the school at Moose Creek but most of their time at home was occupied with farm work.

The Browns raised heavy

horses and Glen McConnell, who helped the family, said they were very good Percherons.

Glen remembered a time when 40 Percherons got loose and he and John went on horseback to round them up and bring them back to the pasture from Manor. Helen remembers one morning in the late 1950s her father, Glen McConnell and Dr. Dunnigan were having breakfast at John and Fran’s home.

Glen explained that he had been helping the Browns and Dr. Dunnigan vaccinate 50 heifers for brucellosis or “bangs.”

Glen stated that there wasn’t a cattle chute available so he, John, and David roped and held the 500-pound heifers while Dr. Dunnigan administered the vaccination.

The 1960s and 1980s were the decades that Helen remembers the farm undergoing the most changes and growth. In the 1960s there were no longer pigs on the farm, just cattle, a team of horses, chickens, and turkeys.

Helen remembered being lulled to sleep by the newly weaned calves. The 1980s was the decade where most of the growth and expansion in land base and Black Angus cattle numbers occurred.

John and David kept cattle on their land and also used community pastures at Alonsa, Man., Ordell Johsons’s at Oxbow, and Earl Silcox’s. William Brown indicated the most cattle they had at one time was 1,500 head.

Naviaux of Redvers, who passed away Dec. 2 at the age of 71 in the Moosomin Heath Centre. He was raised on the farm in the RM of Reciprocity and later took over the farm from his dad. a Larry was predeceased by his parents Lucien and Lena, and is survived by his siblings Rose, Marcel, Dorothy and Marlene, their spouses and families.

Café 361 held a Sunday breakfast buffet on Dec. 5 – there was a good turnout for this breakfast.

Saskatchewan Stock Growers Conventions every June. John had a membership since the late 1960s and in the 1970s they went on Stock Growers’ trips to Mexico and Hawaii. They also attended every annual general meeting of SSGA Zone One. As John aged, he became very concerned about the future of the family farm and asked Tim Young and his daughter Helen to manage his and their affairs.

John spent time, separately with each of them, showing them his cattle and giving them instructions on whom he wanted to buy feeder cattle, bulls and replacement heifers.

A conversation Helen had with her father before he passed about the farm was that he “Had fun, I loved it, it is a wonderful experience.” In the January 2011 edition of Canadian Cattlemen’s Magazine, Helen shared a similar sentiment.

“I’m having fun. I am just astounded, I have met the most wonderful people in the beef industry.”

John and Fran’s son Bryon has spent all his life working on the home quarter and owning his own land. Bryon helped with the feed lot, summer fallowing and driving

the grain truck. As John and Fran aged, he spent a greater amount of his time assisting them. Linda lived on the farm and helped care for her parents. John passed away on Dec. 21, 2002, and his wife Fran, the love of his life and teammate in everything, passed away on June 3, 2019.

Their daughter Linda Brown died on Dec. 27, 2017.

All of Margaret and Andrew Brown’s children farmed in the south Carlyle area. John and Fran were on the home quarter, Andrew and Violet Brown farmed south of the home quarter and have children and grandchildren raising Angus cattle. David and Lilias had their farm just a couple of miles south. Their son William raises Angus cattle and has grain land. Jean and Doug Hewitt had a mixed farm a few miles south of where Jean grew up and their son Scott resides there and continues to grain farm and has commercial cattle.

Walter and Margaret Brown still farm east of the home quarter and Walter continues to raise purebred Black Angus cattle. Their daughter Charlene and husband Jamie raise purebred Angus cattle and commercial cattle.

Maureen Arthur is an RMT and laser therapist

Maureen Arthur is a laser therapist who has practised out of the Lotus Tree office in Carlyle since 2016.

She and her husband Neil live on an acreage three kilometres north of Oxbow.

They have three chil-

dren and six grandchildren.

Maureen Arthur was born and raised in Oxbow and Neil in Alida, and they moved to Wainwright, Alta., in 2000. She was employed in long-term care for a number of years before graduating with an advanced certificate

in massage therapy in 2008.

While in Alberta, Arthur was introduced to low-intensity laser therapy and obtained her certificate thru the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy in Red Deer. They returned to Saskatchewan in 2008 and she has been in prac-

RCMP reminds people to think of others « A5 they had a bright flashlight with them. Officers really set the bar high responding to this complaint, as they arrived on scene immediately due to the call being about them knocking on the door.

The RCMP had recovered the homeowners truck that had been stolen. You never can be too careful when strangers are at your door.

RCMP then received a call of two horses foaling around on the side of Highway 9 near Kenosee Lake. It would have been a night-mare if a horse would have been hit on the Highway.

Carlyle RCMP responded to several mental health calls last week.

The mental health calls varied from people with dementia and people suf-

fering from drug and alcohol psychosis, to people suffering from depression. We want to encourage everyone to reach out for help and talk to someone if they can. No matter how bad things may seem, remember that they will always get better. Life can be very difficult to say the least.

Please reach out and check in with friends, coworkers and family see how they are doing.

It’s a perfectly normal question to ask people how they are doing. Don’t let people suffer in silence. If you see someone that you believe needs some help but won’t accept help from you, please let the police or their family know.

Your Carlyle RCMP also responded to nearly a dozen more serious calls such as assaults, disturbances, family protective services calls and sudden deaths. I will never be speaking or writing about these more serious and sensitive investigations in the paper. Everyone goes through hard times and has problems in their respective lives. It will never be my intention to embarrass or hurt anyone’s feelings in this report.

Scam of the week: The holiday season brings a rise in scams and frauds. There are several scams that pop up every year around the holidays and the majority of them concentrate around the too good to be true con-

cept. These scams are so popular around Christmas due to the increased financial strain most people experience. A scammer offers a reduced interest rate or even zero per cent interest on a credit card or loan. They will also use pressure tactics such as the deal being available for only one day, or for a small number of people. They request personal information from you, such as your social insurance number, mother’s maiden name, date of birth and credit card information. In most instances, the scammers will also request a onetime fee for the service.

The scammers do not have the ability to lower interest rates. They’re stealing your personal information and/or money.

It was so nice to hear all about the fun and excitement surrounding Dickens Village Festival.

I’m happy to report that everyone was very well behaved and the entire event took place without a hiccup being reported to the RCMP. The only negative I heard from the weekend was that the new boss at the RCMP didn’t buy enough candy to throw out during the parade. I can say that the RCMP still takes great

pride in being asked to lead parades and Dickens was no exception. Such a great way to kick off the holiday season.

graveside funeral service will be held on Dec. 8.

Don's brother, Ted Fuller passed away on Nov. 16 at the age of 49 years. We are thinking of this family at this time of their loved ones’ passings.

1958 - 2021 Grant Edwin Wilson passed away in Wawota, Saskatchewan on November 21, 2021 at the age of 63 years. Grant was predeceased by his parents Lorne & Mildred, father and motherin-law Helge & Ruth, grandson Benjamin and brother-in-law Terry. Grant is survived by his wife of 42 years Sherry, son Todd (Lesley), son Sheldon (Christine), daughter Andrea (Josh), grandchildren: Rachel, Reagan, Avery, Alyssa, Marek and Brielle, sister Janice (Ed), sister Norma (Ken) as well brotherin-law Gary (Lynda), sister-in-law Wendy (Kelly), sister-in-law Carol (Brad), numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Grant was born in Wawota on February 24, 1958 and raised on the family farm south of town. Growing up he was a boy who had a passion for sport.

In his teenage years he set long lasting track and field records, dominated the hockey ice and was a force to be reckoned with on the ball diamond.

While his love of sports carried on well into his adult years, Grant settled into his role as a husband, father and farmer; a role he wholeheartedly wore with devotion and pride. He was the 4th generation to live and farm on the homestead. Over the years, Grant had the privilege of farming alongside his father, his children and eventually, his grandchildren. Grant’s skill set was wide and varied. Aside from being a farmer, Grant could weld.

The number of panels, windbreaks, gates, calf shelters and trailers he built over the years, not to mention all the equipment he repaired was a skill that served him well. He could mechanic, he could plumb, he knew wiring and electrical. Grant was a jack of all trades but most importantly, and maybe even unknowingly, he was a teacher. The skills and lessons that he passed down to his children and grandchildren are valuable in so many ways, on so many levels. Eventually, as Grant slowed down on the farm and let the boys take over the reins, he found himself a new role at Kenosee Lake; Grant took the job as Village Foreman in 2012. This job opened him up to a whole new set of skills. He went back to school and earned his water and sewer tickets. He took such pride in his new position, though, he couldn’t quite leave his roots at the farm behind. Grant juggled between his new job and making sure he was at the farm whenever he was needed. He was so humble, kind, dependable and always there to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed fishing, quadding, ski-dooing, visiting and relaxing on his deck at the end of the day. Grant’s family and friends were his pride and joy. He will be sorely missed by everyone who had the honour of knowing him.

Jacqueline Claire Lussier was born on February 10, 1943 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA. She reminisced very fondly of the many values instilled by her parents: a deep faith, a love of travel and exploring, a profound appreciation for nature, and respect for those whose values were different from their own. In 1960, immediately after high school, Jacqui joined the Sisters of Holy Cross. She obtained a teaching certificate and spent her early years teaching in elementary

In 1976 she accepted an offer to come to Canada and become involved in parish work. Her first assignment was in Fort McMurray, Alberta where she first experienced snow and the amazing Northern Lights. She spent the next seventeen years in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she again became involved in parish work. In 2000 she came to the Archdiocese of Regina, and after working as a parish minister in a tri-parish setting in Regina, Saskatchewan, she moved to Lampman, Saskatchewan in September of 2005. Here she was responsible for the parishes of Lampman, Maryland, Benson and Forget.

Travelling country roads in all kinds of weather and hauling drinking water, she arose to every challenge. Over her seven years of ministry in the area, while getting to know all her parishioners very well and cultivating deep friendships, she made sure that each of her parishes had the best of liturgies.

Upon retirement from her position with the Archdiocese in 2012, Jacqui chose to move to Stoughton. She rapidly became an active and much-loved member of her new community. Sister, as she was affectionately called by everyone, led prayer services at the nursing home, helped organize ecumenical services, led a weekly Bible Study group, prepared students from the parish for sacraments, and was very involved in Forget’s liturgy planning and preparation. Sister was such a people person. She would be found at many community events, having coffee or playing cards. She absolutely loved being invited to a home where there were children to play with or babies to rock.

Sr. Jacqueline passed away at the Regina General Hospital on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the age of 78. She was predeceased by her parents: Albert and Bertha Lussier; three sisters: Marie Jeanne Lussier, Pauline Polizzotto and Lillian Snyder; three brothers: Paul, Robert and Albert Jr. She leaves to grieve her eleven nieces and nephews and their families living in the USA, her congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross, and many good friends in the New England States and across Western Canada.

The Funeral Mass for Sr. Jacqueline was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Our Lady of La Salette R.C. Church, Forget, Saskatchewan, with Rev. Ronald Andree the celebrant. The Rite of Committal will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Edmonton, Alberta, on Tuesday, December 21, 2021.

Our family would like to thank everyone who attended Grant’s funeral service on November 30th at the Wawota Town Hall. Special thanks to Bev Ireland for officiating and making the service such a tribute to Grant, to our family and close friends who contributed in various ways that meant so much to us, to the Wawota Lions Club for the Honor Guard, to the United Church for the lunch after and to Carscaddens for their services. We would also like to thank Norman and Jackie Oliver for your help leading up to and after the service.

Moose Mountain Woodworks knows kitchen makeovers

Just over three kilometres north of Carlyle, on the west side of Highway 9, Moose Mountain Woodworks has been in business for over three decades.

Originally founded

by Paul Twietmeyer, the cabinet maker has been jointly owned by Cary Chatterson and Ashton Lisitza since 2012. Lisitza

started working for the company back in 2006 after graduating from the SIAST (now Sask PolyTechnic) Prince Albert campus. He lives in Carlyle and is married to Rhose Balbada-Lisitza, who is employed at the Bear Claw Casino.

They have three children, daughter Drazmine, 16, and sons Kagomae, six, and Finn, two.

the Carlyle area back in the mid 1980s and was on the Carlyle Cougars’ 1988-89 Big Six Hockey League championship team. A self-employed carpenter his entire life, Cary resides at Kenosee Lake and his son Levi operates a barbershop on Main Street in Carlyle.

Moose Mountain Woodworks specializes in locally made kitchen cabinets and countertops. The majority of their work is done right in their Carlyle shop and they employ three additional full-time cabinet makers, John Caldwell, Renzo Gallano and Linda Jordens. In talking with the owners, business has been good.

Maryfield Sunrise Villa happenings Submitted by Betty Walker Well here we are, one week closer to Christmas.

Last Wednesday night, we had our Christmas light up night and is it something. If you are on a sparkle tour, come to our courtyard entrance and have a look. We started off the evening with some carol singing with Judy at the piano. Then the lights were set on and lunch was served.

Christmas goodies and Lois' sticky buns were served, along with hot apple cider. They make us feel special. Our empty chairs are being filled with residents returning after being away awhile.

Welcome back.

We also have a new resident, John Selby.

Hope you enjoy your new home. He's even brave enough to play cards with the women at night and we enjoy having an added card shark.

We had another visit from Santa on Saturday. He left us boxes of chocolates to nibble

on later, courtesy of the Lions Club. Thank you.

Santa is also changing with the times. The first one had been on a diet, and the next one had no beard or hat, just a lot of hair but that didn't matter because as soon as you see Santa Claus, it

takes you back to being a kid again and getting a treat handed out just for you.

I hope I never get too old to remember how excited I was to see Santa.

The countdown is on.
