Main Street Christmas in Arcola right out of a Hallmark movie

By Laura Kish There was no better way to kick off the holiday season than by attending Arcola’s Main Street Christmas celebrations on Dec. 11.

The events throughout the day created the perfect holiday scene in the town.

Organizer Sarah Rickard explains that the idea behind this event stemmed from watching the Hallmark Christmas movies with her mom.

Some of the films feature fictional and/or real-life towns that are charming and make for the perfect destination to ring in the holidays for true Hallmark lovers.

“When my mom was real sick we used to watch all the Hallmark Christmas movies together,” explains Rickard, who lost her mom to cancer in 2017.

Rickard then put a post on Facebook that she wished someone would turn their town into a Christmas village like the ones in the movies.

“A bunch of people liked the idea so I ended up putting it in motion,” says Rickard who organized the event in 2019 for the first time.

COVID put a halt to having the celebration in 2020.

So it was once again time to start organizing for the 2021 event.

Mother Nature cooperated with the temperature being a moderate -4 C with a slight breeze.

They day started with a trade show with a variety of booths to see and Christmas crafts to purchase.

Hockey fans took in the games at the rink throughout the day.

The kids and adults made their way to Main Street to see Santa Claus in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. Many took this opportunity to put in their Christmas order with Santa while having a photo taken to treasure forever.

Once they finished putting in their order with the big guy in red,

they took in the free movie matinee The Grinch.

Kids made constant use of the toboggan hill, carrying their sleds up the hill again and again … and again.

Quite a crowd gathered around to warm up at the fire pits while roasting hotdogs and marshmallows or just having a cup of hot chocolate.

Skaters enjoyed the outdoor rink, surrounded by bales, made specifically for this event. The rink will continue to be maintained throughout the winter.

Horse and wagon rides were available throughout the entire day, to the delight of everyone.

Christmas carolers gathered on a trailer and sang festive tunes all around the town.

Richard was very pleased on how well attended the event was.

“The whole community came out to attend the event, which was nice, and then we had some people from other

“Some came for the trade show and then made their way downtown as well.”

“The whole idea was to have a community fun day and all for free.”

“For the most part, everything was supplied through donations from businesses and all work was done by volunteers.”

“We had to work around a lot of COVID rules this year.”

“It was a lot of planning for sure.”

The events throughout the day stirred up emotions and brought back many pleasant memories for Rickard.

“Seeing all the kids on the skating rink and the toboggan hill,” says Rickard is what brought those memories back of her mom. “It was packed.”

The temperature was just right, which kept

skaters out on the ice right up until 10:30 p.m. that Saturday night and again all day Sunday.

“It was great to see. I hope people make use of it all winter.”

“Our goal was to have the community out together and provide a fun and free family-oriented night,” explains Rickard.

Rounding out the busy day was the lighting of the Christmas tree on Main Street in Arcola.

First-ever Alameda Santa Day proved to be a hit

By Ana Bykhovskaia Alameda invited the community to come out and have fun during their first-ever Santa Day on Dec. 4.

The day saw kids having pictures taken with Santa at the library, a soup and sandwich lunch served at the church, public skating at Alameda Rink, crafts, a hot dog roast and hot chocolate offered at the library, a Santa parade and the opening of a town-wide Christmas light contest.

Skylar Antoniuk, a person behind the

event, said the day went great.

"We had a really good turnout for all of our events," Antoniuk said.

"We had 16 time slots for the Santa photos. And then we did the lunch at the church, which had a really good turnout even with all the restrictions. They managed to sell out of both of their kinds of soup very quickly. And then the cookie decorating, we had a good turnout for that. And a good turnout for skating at the rink. people, there was three different age groups of hockey teams away at tournaments that day, and we still managed to have quite a good turnout. That was good. And then the parade, we had 16 floats entered."

The RM of Enniskillen was the winner of the parade.

Antoniuk explained that pieces of the event, such as pictures with Santa and a small parade, had been done last year, but it was the first time they had a day full of activities.

She started working on organizing everything around Halloween, and already in early December people from Alameda and nearby communities could enjoy the holiday festivities.

"It felt like we needed something for the community. We're a very small community…

And it was such a nice event last year that was thrown together, just so that parents could still get a picture with Santa in a modified version on the back of the trailer. So I approached the fire department and said, 'Hey, are you going to do this again?' And they're like, 'No, I don't think so because there are no restrictions this year.' And I said, 'Well, I'm going to take that and run with it in a different direction,'" Antoniuk recalled.

She got different groups organized so that the community would have a real start to the

"It brought everybody together just to talk to each other on the streets and it didn't feel like we were still in a pandemic anymore," Antoniuk shared.

The Alameda Santa Day also marked the beginning of the Christmas lights contest, another potential town tradition.

"People are just invited to decorate their

house, or even just put Christmas lights up in general. And then people are driving around doing a twinkle tour type of thing. And then you can place your vote, either by texting my phone number, or you can drop the address off at the library. And then the first, second and third win a prize.

All the prizes have been donated by different businesses around the community to make baskets of stuff to get to the winners," Antoniuk explained.

ing for the Christmas lights contest closes on Dec. 23, and winners are to be announced on Christmas Eve. Antoniuk also put together a scavenger hunt to encourage more people to get out, explore the community, look at Christmas lights and vote. The hunt will be published on the Town of Alameda and Alameda Library Facebook pages.

The library will also have a Christmas cupcake decorating class on Dec. 16, and after that, they will shut down for the holidays.

Redvers Winterfest was a resounding success

By Gord Paulley The Town of Redvers held its fifth annual Winterfest on Dec. 11, and the day was a huge success.

The Observer interviewed one of the committee members, Kendra Miller, at the conclusion of the event.

“Our committee was extremely pleased at how the day went. Our children enjoyed the magician, the balloon sculptor, the bouncy castle, and paw patrol. The kids had a great craft class that was well attended, as was our feature movie The Grinch.

“Many participated in the scavenger hunt and of course the highlight of the day was the appearance of Princess Elsa and Olaf at the Golden Age Centre. The place was packed.”

The community was busy all day with families in attendance from Carnduff, Gainsborough, Manor, Carlyle, Maryfield and many other locations. The sleigh rides were a popular attraction and the committee thanks Nelson Motors for arranging this service. Twenty-five women also participated in a wreath making class.

Princess Elsa’s appearance at the Golden Age Centre was a big hit at the Winterfest. Pictures by Gord Paulley at 5 p.m. and there was good participation in the Winterfest parade. Residents were provided with a Twinkle Tour courtesy of the Town of Redvers transit van and both businesses and residences were judged on their decorating.

A large bonfire complete with hot chocolate was capably manned by members of the Redvers Fire Department.

Miller wished to thank all committee members including Kayleen Gaudet and Megan Ellison and the

many volunteers for their hard work. Kudos were also extended to Santa photographer Kristen Dumaine, daycare workers and Town of Redvers employees.

Concluded Miller: “Thank-you to all that attended and worked at the

Redvers Winterfest this year.

It went off without a hitch and in fact incoming donations and admissions more than offset all expenses.

Here’s hoping for another Winterfest in 2022.”

Kipling School students show support for Food Bank

By Laura Kish Over a 10-day span, the students at the Kipling School held a food bank drive, collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Kipling Food Bank.

Those boxes of goods were recently delivered to the food bank by some of Monica Olson’s Grade 10, 11 and 12 students.

Food bank volunteers Wayne Struble,

and Norman and Brenda Korfman were on hand to receive the generous donations from the students.

Struble provided a brief explanation to the students of how the food bank operates and why it’s so important to the community.

“The food bank works on a volunteer basis with eight regular volunteers.”

“People may be having hard times, tempo-

rary or otherwise, and some may be having a tough time meeting their expenses through no fault of their own.”

“Our purpose is to help people out. We have 20 to 25 singles and/or families regularly stop in to pick up a hamper.”

“But those numbers are increasing,” explains Struble.

The food bank has mostly non-perishable foods including dry cereal, peanut butter, canned

goods, coffee, soups, jam and pasta.

They also offer up bread, eggs, apples, potatoes and flour as well as frozen meats.

“We’re very thankful for donations of food,” says a grateful Struble and adds, “we gladly accept monetary donations as well.”

Donations can be

made at the local grocery stores or at many of the churches.

Struble explains that the food bank is very well stocked and fully functionable so if anyone is in need please don’t hesitate to come.

The Kipling Food Bank is located downstairs in the Kipling Professional Building,

across from the post office. The hours are every second and fourth Wednesday from 1-3 p.m.

Advent forgiveness and Christmas love

By Ken Rolheiser The following is from Christmas stories from Norman Vincent Peale: The call came from the red-light district of the city. The woman said one of the girls was dying. She was calling for a minister.

My father always responded to such an appeal. “Get your coat, Norman,” he said. “I want you to come too.”

My mother was aghast. “You don’t mean you’d take a 15-year-old boy into a place like that.”

My father said, “There’s a lot of sin and sadness and despair in human life. Norman can’t be shielded from it forever.”

We came to a big old frame house. There, lying in a big brass bed, was a pathetic, doll-like young girl, so white and frail that she seemed like a child, scarcely older than I was.

The girl reached for his hand. She whispered that she had come from a good Christian home and was sorry for the things she had done. She was dying and she was afraid.

“I’ve been so bad,” she said. “So bad.”

My father put both his big strong hands around her small one and said, “There is no such thing as a bad girl. There are girls who act badly sometimes, but there are no bad girls — or bad boys either — because God made them, and He makes all things good. Do you believe in Jesus?”

The girl nodded. He continued, “Then let me hear you say, ‘Dear Jesus, forgive me for my sins.’” She repeated those words.

“Now,” he said, “God loves you, His child who has strayed, and He has forgiven you, and no matter when the time comes, He will take you to your heavenly home.”

There were tears on the faces of the other women standing there, and on my own, too, because everything sordid, everything corrupt, was simply swept away.

There was beauty in that place of evil. The love born in Bethlehem was revealing itself again on a dark and dismal street in Cincinnati, Ohio, and nothing could withstand it. Nothing.

So that was the gift I received that Christmas, the frankincense-knowledge that there is good in all people, even the sad and the forlorn, and that no one need be lost because of past mistakes.

Advent is an opportunity to come back to the love of Jesus and to set things right. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

As a teacher I spent many years going to conventions and listening to speakers. I know that in order for a speaker to change you, he has to touch the core of your belief system.

Only then can change result that will affect your future behaviour and direction.

The Holy Spirit has the power to touch the centre of our beliefs, where we live, and bring about change. The word of God in scripture is how Jesus can touch our very being and transform us this Advent.

Where do we wish to be at the end of our Advent journey? I came across a prayer that included this wish: “O God…look upon your people whose dry and stony hearts are parched with thirst. Unseal the living water of your Spirit; let it become within us an ever-flowing spring, leaping up to eternal life.” (Living with Christ, February 2005).

The only supplies we need at Christmas

Shelley Luedtke One recipe. Five ingredients. Just five. Yet it took three households to make. Allow me to explain.

Something we look forward to each year is a family favorite called toffee balls; jumbo marshmallows coated in a gooey toffee mixture and rolled in Rice Krispies.

We didn’t have much success for a couple of years when Mackintosh’s was no longer supplying toffee bars to Canada, just the individually wrapped candies. We tried calculating the equivalent number we would need but it just didn’t seem to turn out quite right. The toffee bars returned a few years ago (insert loud cheering here) so we can once again enjoy them during the holidays. But it was a close call this year.

Are you tiring of the term supply chain issues yet? Me too. Added to distribution disruptions in my pursuit of toffee balls (I know, earth shat-

tering dilemma, right?) is that workers at Kellogg’s have been on strike since October. Name brand Rice Krispies were quickly becoming the ghost of Christmas past.

We are hearing of specific items that will likely be limited and we are to prepare for more empty shelves in the New Year. It is going to be a bit of a shock for those who have never had to go without, but perhaps it’s a jolt to the system many of us need.

I’ll not forget reading the account of a father in a refugee camp who talked about the days the aid trucks arrived at the temporary camp where he and his family sought safety. He made sure he tucked a sharpened blade in his clothes because he knew he might have to fight off someone to get the food back to his family. Or the story of the grandmother in Somalia who searches for a few leaves to feed her grandchildren. Or the mother in Burundi forced to walk lengthy distances to access a bit of clean water.

Or the family in Saskatchewan simply not having enough to make it through the month.

Hundreds of thousands of people … no, let’s be honest … millions of people around the world share similar stories.

is a daily struggle for too many – and it is in sharp contrast to what I know to be reality.

We’ve been in a supply crisis for a long time – a long, long time—a supply crisis not about lacking an item or two, but lacking the most basic of needs.

More than 2,000 years ago, Mary and Joseph were away from home, preparing for the birth of a baby, and taking shelter in the only place available to them. Yet in the intervening years we have aggrandized our notions of celebration to such an extent we think we need to supply containers full of baking, and have an abundance of gifts under the tree, with ornate decorations decking the halls.

Such a far cry from the humbleness, and purpose, of that first Christmas, and no wonder it leaves some feeling defeated by the time, money and energy that it all takes, and frustration over not being able to access what they are told they should want.

We know there are items we simply won’t be able to get in the days ahead. Items much more crucial than those interfering with a family baking list. Empty shelves have long been a reality for markets around the world. Bare cupboards have long been a real-

ity for countless families close to home and across the globe. Yes, the reality is we have had supply issues for a long time—it’s just that now it is affecting those that haven’t needed to worry about it in the past.

I purchased marshmallows, condensed milk and butter. My sister found toffee. My mom had a box of cereal so together we made toffee balls. One favourite recipe. Five ingredients.

Three households to make two dozen treats.

Did we need them? No. But they remind me of the level of giving and sharing that is going to be required in the weeks, months and years ahead.

Christmas is not about the trinkets or treats. We need to remember that as we confront what we can’t get.

More importantly we need to recognize that this has been a daily reality for so many; not because the product was unavailable, but because it was unattainable.

The gift of Christmas is for all. It is hope.

It is promise. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed.

Jesus came with nothing but gave everything He had. Christmas is the saviour coming into the world. Christmas is the greatest gift of all. Best of all, there’s more than enough for everyone.

That’s my outlook.

Cougars score 18 in a romp over Midale All nine teams were on the ice in the Big Six Hockey League this weekend.

The Carlyle Cougars scored six times in each period in an 18-3 romp over the Midale Mustangs Friday night.

Ben Johnston led the Cougars’ offensive attack with five goals and four assists, while Jon Gaudet had three goals and six helpers, and Koby Morriseau notched three goals and five assists.

Brett Turgeon also had three goals for Carlyle, while Cooper Fox and Dakota Rose tallied twice.

Logan King, Steven Lindenbach and Matt Anderson were the Midale goal scorers.

Ryan Kulyk was Carlyle’s goalie, while Talen King started for Midale.

Also on Friday, the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings remained the only undefeated team in the league with a 6-5 shootout win over the Carnduff Red Devils.

Dan Moriarty scored the tying goal for Carnduff with 1:52 to play in the third period to force overtime.

Kyle Garagan, Devon Carriere, Matt Audette and Nico Anderson also scored for Carnduff.

Rhett Frey scored twice for Yellow Grass, and Tucker Neuberger, Dustin Chartrand and Zach Douglas had the other goals.

Cody Dumaine was the goalie for Carnduff, while Nate Ferris was in net for the Wheat Kings.

The Oxbow Huskies defeated the Wawota Flyers 6-4. Rhett Shaw had two goals for the Huskies. Derek Cooney, Trey Mathison, Dillan Plews and Brycen Odgers also scored.

Odgers and Jordan Cooney each had three assists.

Mykel Biermann, Taylor Ernst, Billy Easton and Devin Stewart tallied for Wawota.

Saturday’s docket saw the Bienfait Coalers blast the Mustangs 10-3, Carnduff blow out Wawota 12-1 and Redvers double up Moosomin 6-3.

Kaelan Holt had a hat trick, and Daniel Wanner notched a goal and four assists for Bienfait. Wyatt Garagan had two goals, and Jake Palmer, Matt Bourassa, Dylan Herzberg and Hunter Piche also scored.

Ernst had the lone Wawota goal.

Shane Marsh picked up the win in goal for Carnduff, and Tye Steinke started for Wawota.

Redvers scored twice in each period, with Drew Hoff and Remy LaMotte each getting two goals.

Gavin Martel and Presten Kopeck had the other goals.

Bud Halloway scored twice for Moosomin and Devon Jamieson also scored.

Cody Matthewson

was the goalie for Redvers, while Levi Horn was in net for Moosomin.

Next weekend will be another busy one in the Big Six. Moosomin will visit Oxbow, Redvers is at Wawota and Yellow Grass visits Bienfait on Dec. 17.

Games the following day are Oxbow at Midale, Moosomin at Carnduff, Carlyle at Redvers and Bienfait at Yellow Grass. Those games start at 8 pm.

Wawota is at Carlyle on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.

Alida news - talk of homemade pies and pizza

By Edel Cowan Sincere sympathy is extended to Marcelle Peterson and family on the death of her husband Benny on Dec. 5 at the age of 82, at the Redvers Long-Term Care Home.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Johanna; brothers, Eldon and Donald; sister, Myrtle Parkinson; brothers-in-law Ted Parkinson, Harvey George, Raymond George and John Mate; and sisters-in-law Armande George and Janine Mate. Benny is survived by his wife Marcelle, children Michelle (Reg) Needham, Bob (Deanna), Joanne (Brad) Longphee and Tracy (Kari); eight grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, as well as his sisters, Bernice (Bob) Health, Beth George and Carol (Paul) Weger, and sisters-in-law Glennis Peterson, Mary-Ann Peterson and Lorraine George, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Dec. 11 at the Redvers Roman Catholic Church with internment at Dannevirke Cemetery and a fellowship luncheon followed at Alida Hall. Some members of the Peterson family who were home and attended the funeral.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan returned home on Dec. 8 after spend-

ing approximately 12 days holidaying in Florida and Minot. They visited the Universal Studios and other sites while in Florida in an early Christmas trip that was very much enjoyed.

Some local ladies met at the hall on Dec. 12 and decided to get busy and make some homemade pumpkin pie.

They made 35 pies and all of these pies have been baked, purchased and I’m sure have been or will be enjoyed by the purchasers.

Later they may just decide to make more pies, probably in the New Year, if there’s enough interest. Please call Shelly at 306-485-7023 if you are interested in receiving some pies.

The Alida Rec Board is now offering homemade pizza for sale as another fundraiser with four different kinds available. The deadline for ordering is Jan. 8, 2022 with delivery date on Jan. 22. Beauty lounge celebrates a year in Carlyle

The Queen of Hearts Beauty Lounge recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in Carlyle and the Observer had the opportunity to interview its sole owner, Kelsie Mund.

Mund, 30, is engaged to Tyler Matthewson and was born and raised in Regina. She moved to Carlyle in 2017 and operated her own business, Skin Deep Medical, out of her home for three years.

In the fall of 2020, she came upon an opportunity to purchase the property on Railway Avenue West known at Prairie Sky Kitchens (formerly Royalty Dry-Cleaning).

After both minor and major renovations, the business was opened on Dec. 7, 2020.

In addition to operating Skin Deep Medi-

cal, Mund has five team members who operate their own businesses from the Queen of Hearts Beauty Lounge building.

These six female entrepreneurs have bonded together since opening day and Mund is proud to highlight the attributes of each.

Carlyle Cornerstone Theatre’s Scrooge in Space

By Gord Paulley I was asked to provide a personal assessment of Scrooge in Space, and as I attended the event on Dec. 3, I thought I would.

I sat in row eight, seat one, and attended the play with my friend Boyd Cochrane. When the curtain was raised, a ripple of excitement carried through the crowd.

Captain Cratchit (Lane Easton) and the Engineer (Shannon Klatt) opened the play and caught my attention.

Moments later, Megan Mcauley as Snarky and Monte McNaughton as Scrooge appeared and the story started to flow.

There was a lot of singing and dancing and I’ll highlight my favourite parts of the play.

-Both Megan and Monte had strong performances as did Leola Hirtle, who played the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Navigator and Old Jo. A lot of roles for one actress. Well done.

-Throughout the performance, the band was awesome. Michele Amy (piano), Morgan Turk (guitar), Jason Junk (drums), Todd Greenwood (bass) and Gillian Maher (fiddle) played flawlessly and

were a cohesive unit throughout.

-In regards to Gillian, she sat at the front of the stage on the right side. She was also the prompter for the full 2 1/2 hours and had a very important role. An unsung hero. Well done Gillian.

-Shannon Klatt as the Engineer was hilarious with his ad-libbing and Scottish accent. Denise Singleton and Dianne Twietmeyer, who dressed up together as Fezzi and Wig in their double blue outfit, were awesome. Erica Armstrong, with her role as the Foreign Crew member talking gibberish, was priceless. When an empty chair inadvertently fell into the band, Scrooge had a great impromptu line. “They don’t build the stages as big as they used to!”

-Fred Perry, who was the narrator and officiant, has a wonderful voice and I could watch his antics all night long.

Grant Taylor capably played the role of Young Scrooge, among others, and his ponytail was the butt of a funny line.

-The set was colourful and the settings changed quickly and quietly. Both Boyd and I commented on the num-

The sound effects of the Star Trek door opening and closing was very entertaining. The light show emitted the movie projector was also appealing to the eye. The behind the scenes volunteers were noted.

All in all, a great performance by the Carlyle Theatre Group. I didn’t mention everyone, notably veteran David Slykhuis, but to me the play was well written and I was happy to be in the crowd. Congratulations to Megan and the rest of the crew.

Saturn Oil and Gas supports worthy cause Saturn Oil and Gas has provided a generous donation for $5,000 to the Carlyle & District Foodbank. Saturn purchased oilfield properties in June located in southeast Saskatchewan. They have approximately 50 employees in the area, including 12 that work out of the top floor of the Crescent Point building, located on Eight Street West in Carlyle. Kipling’s Parade of Lights sets the mood for the festive season

By Laura Kish The Kipling & District Lions Club held their first ever Parade of Lights on Dec. 11 with almost 20 entries.

Just before dusk, parade goers found their perfect spot on Kipling’s Main Street before making their way to the front of Balfour Drugs to get their complimentary hot chocolate from Tim Hortons and cookies compliments of Three Sisters Foods.

The parade brings the community together celebrating this joyous festive season.

Leading the parade was the RCMP and ambulance, with the Kipling Volunteer Fire Department bringing up the

rear with three of their trucks.

Vehicles were decorated with all colours of lights, blow up displays were in the box of the trucks, Santa was on a big green chair and carolers were on a decorated trailer.

All the elves from various businesses and clubs in town were busy for days prior to the event, decorating their larger than life floats.

Parade day is exciting for the youngsters waiting to see the big guy in red and getting the candy is an added bonus.

Santa’s helpers were dressed warmly, walking and handing out candy canes.

Tara Carter, having recently joined the Kipling Lions, suggested the club hold a

Christmas parade so she took it upon herself to organize the event with help from other Lions members.

“This is the first time for Kipling to hold an evening Christmas parade,” explains Carter.

Some of the businesses stayed open late for shoppers the same night.

“The parade turned out great,” says Carter.

“I’m pretty proud of Kipling and all their hard work,” says Carter, who adds, “their floats turned out amazing.”

Kipling Fire Chief: if you drink, don’t drive!

By Laura Kish A firefighter is a rescuer extensively trained in firefighting, primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten life and property.

If you’ve ever been driving along and seen the scene of a car accident, you’ve probably noticed that there are often firefighters on the scene. If you’re wondering why they are there, you’re in good company and it’s because they can add valuable assistance to save lives. Firefighters respond to vehicle accidents

because they are the best equipped and trained to handle these calls. They are able to use special tools to free accident victims who are trapped and they are trained as EMTs to treat injuries in emergency situations.

Fire Chief Ken Nordal of the Kipling Volunteer Firefighters gives his comments on some of the calls the local fire department receives.

Over the years, the local fire department hasn’t necessarily attended accidents due to drinking and driving during any particular time of year.

“We receive calls throughout the summer and fall, some due to hitting wildlife,” explains Nordal. “We’ve had a few from drinking and driving.”

“Typically it’s after Christmas we’ve attended accident scenes … last year it was in January and February.”

“In my experience, probably not during the Christmas season do we attend any more accidents than otherwise.”

Nordal explains that the firefighters did not have to use the Jaws of Life in those accidents they attended because they were able to get the people out of the vehicles without cutting them out.

“Unfortunately when there is an accident and when there’s alcohol involved, quite often it’s with another vehicle.”

scenes.

“We use the hooligan bar which is something like a wrecking bar or crowbars or sawzalls,” explains Nordal. “There’s a variety of tools that we use.”

“We do use the Jaws quite regularly depending on whether the people are trapped in the vehicle or not. Whether we can open the doors or have to pry the doors open is when we’ll use the Jaws of Life. We do have two sets of Jaws that we use.

We have hydraulic power ones and some cordless ones.”

Kipling Fire Department was always involved in the school’s mock accidents every couple of years, which were presented to the Grade 10-12 students.

Nordal feels that these messages definitely sunk in with the teenagers.

Because the firefighters in Kipling have seen their fair share of accidents over the years, some due to drinking and driving, Nordal gives his advice to drivers.

“If you want to have a drink or two, phone a friend for a ride. Get someone to come and pick you up. Life’s too short to risk your life to drive when you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

“Before you head out to the party, figure out who’s driving home. Respect that person’s decision not to have a drink.

They’re the person that’s going to make sure you get home safe.”

Nordal goes on to comment: “If you end up spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair or otherwise because of a bad decision, it can also be devastating on the entire family.”

“I’ve talked with some of the kids that have gone through those mock accidents and afterwards they say they never realized how much devastation there is and how much work there is to get people out of a vehicle.

It plays in the back of their mind. I feel that has been very beneficial to the young people. I don’t think it’s the young people that are out drinking and driving anymore.”

“I know some of those kids that were involved in the mock accidents going back to when the school first started doing them and they still talk about those,” says Nordal. “It does definitely stick in their mind.”

“One thing that really has an effect on accidents is speed and loose gravel on the roads. People seem to drive way too fast at night,” comments Nordal on his observation.

There was a great turnout and the balmy weather enabled Santa Claus to take pictures with the children outside.

Mrs. Claus barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs, with the meat and pop donated by the Southern Plains Co-op’s location.

Carlyle Fire and Rescue added a fire truck to spotlight the event.

Wawota weekly news

By Myrna Olson Earlier this fall a group of storefront business owners and home-based business owners gathered to plan some Christmas activities. A successful Christmas market was held at the Village Inn on Nov. 20. On the weekend of Nov. 27 and 28, there were hay rides and free Santa pictures.

Dec. 2 featured hot dogs and hot chocolate served on the lot between Shear Edge and Front Porch. There was late night shopping, too. This was a great start to more activities in our community.

The Wawota Public Library Book Club met at the Wawota Village on Dec. 9. They discussed the latest book, The Orchard, by Theresa Weir. It was a memoir and showed the dangers of the high amounts of spray used to

control the codling moths that attacked the apple trees.

Therese Lamontagne is now a resident of Moose Mountain Lodge at Carlyle. We wish her well in her new home.

The Wawota Lions held their 53rd annual seniors’ supper Dec. 6. Seventy-seven seniors attended with several take-out meals.

Six prizes were drawn for and the winners were Harold Holloway, Don Steinke, Bonnie Charles, Betty Wyatt, Irene Dorrance and Henry and Joan Fowler. It was a great evening appreciated by all.

I had a nice chat with Janet Kessler from Kipling recently.

She keeps in contact with the Burdens of Plattsville, Ont. In this year's Christmas letter word was received of Grace Burden's passing on Jan. 30 of this year. Karl Burden was the United Church minister in Wawota in the 1960s.

Southeast leads the way for land sale Saskatchewan’s December public offering of Crown petroleum and natural gas rights, held on Dec. 7, generated a little more than $1.4 million in revenue for the province, according to a news release issued Thursday morning.

This represents a 53.4 per cent increase over December 2020.

Of the total 73 parcels posted, 55 received acceptable bids. Total bids covered 4,361 hectares and the average bonus bid was $321 per hectare, with the highest acceptable bid at $3,151 per hectare.

The southeast region generated the highest interest, bringing in $913,862.95 for 51 parcels. The Lloydminster area had two parcels that sold worth $295,568.43, and the Kindersley area also had two parcels sold for $190,710.47.

There were no parcels available in the Swift Current area during this offering.

The highest bonus bid received on a lease was $215,076.00 for a 244.023 hectare lease in the Lloydminster area. This lease is located southwest of Lashburn and is prospective for oil in the Mannville

Group.

Millennium Land Ltd was awarded this lease.

The highest dollars per hectare received for a lease in this offering is $3,151.51 per hectare. This 32.259 hectare lease was awarded to Millennium Land Ltd. and is located southeast of Halbrite.

There were 59 parcels posted in the Estevan area for the December sale, with 4,216 hectares in bonus bids.

The average bonus bid was $240.90 per hectare.

The highest bonus bid received on a lease in this area was $130,314.39 or $503.87 per hectare.

This 258.627 hectare lease was awarded to Tundra Oil and Gas Ltd. and is located five kilometres east of North Portal.

To date, the province has collected $8.8 million from oil and gas sales and $4.2 million from subsurface minerals for a total of $13 million, with one oil and gas rights sale and one subsurface mineral rights sale remaining for the fiscal year.

The final sale of the current 2021 fiscal year is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2022.

Carlyle legion makes year-end donations

By Gord Paulley The Carlyle branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held their Christmas party last week with a number of guests and members in attendance.

Craig Bird of the Southeast Military Museum in Estevan was the keynote speaker. He talked about recent successes in raising commemorative banners across many southeast communities, including Carlyle. Bird advised that 35 banners have been raised to date in seven different towns and cities.

At this windup, the legion donated two stethoscopes, a vitals machine and several alert alarms to the Moose Mountain Lodge. They also donated a Holt Hal-

ter 24/48 heart monitor complete with computer software to the Arcola Family Health Clinic.

This heart monitor enables results to be obtained locally.

The Carlyle branch also advised that they will be hosting the legion provincial curling from Jan. 14-16, 2022. There will be masters, regular and mixed divisions.

Learning all about science at the Windthorst Library

By Laura Kish Preschool children had the opportunity to discover just how cool science can be through experiments at the Windthorst Public Library on Dec. 9.

The Regional KidsFirst program brought a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) for Little Explorers event best suited for children ages two

to five.

The morning started with a story, What is Science, read by Madeleine Valentine, the early childhood community developer at Regional KidsFirst, followed by three experiments.

It made for some great visual learning for the children attending.

The first experiment was Magic Milk, where three different colors of food colouring were

dropped in to a shallow container of milk, and then they used a Q-tip that’s been covered in dish soap. The milk reacts and moves away from the soap making for a kaleidoscope of color.

The second experiment was one everyone has tried as a youngster, Coca-Cola and Mentos eruption. They filled a little bottle with some soda pop, and then they added the crushed Men-

tos and sat back and watched the bottle’s contents fizzle up and over.

The final experiment, which the kids were the most excited about, involved baking soda and vinegar. The vinegar is poured into a bottle, and baking soda is funnelled into a balloon. The balloon is then placed over top of the bottle’s opening, and when the baking soda gets shaken down to mix

with the vinegar, it reacts by blowing up the balloon. This experiment had quite the “wow” factor.

Valentine explains the science behind the experiments as she introduces kids to science, and teaches them how to follow instructions and learn and understand the cause and effect.

Jill Taylor, branch librarian at Windthorst Public Library, was happy to offer this program to the local youngsters.

Other than reading books at your local library, Taylor explains

that they recently offered Light Therapy – a therapy lamp at the library if the winter blues were getting to you.

And if you are an avid outdoorsperson and you like to enjoy the snow, you had the opportunity to borrow snowshoes and crazy carpets offered through the library as well.

The library holds a variety of winter projects to keep you busy. There’s the December take and make to decorate a tree, and it presents and a class to make Christmas ornaments.

The Carlyle Lions Park had a record number of campers this year.

While recent medical restrictions have limited the club’s activities, a number of projects are planned for 2022. Three hundred club tickets are now on sale and are

available from any Lions member. Ball Diamond Number 6 will be completed this spring tinning the dugouts and adding yellow capping to the newly installed fence. A sound booth is also being erected behind the main Cardinal ball diamond No. 1 and will be constructed and operational in time for the 2022 season.

The Carlyle and District Lions Club is very active and an important part of the community.

The 2021-22 executive is comprised of Vermeersch as president, vice-president Paulley, second vice-president Wayne Wilson, and secretary-treasurer Ebbes.

Internet upgrades for Kipling PIC truck wash construction and Oxbow SaskTel has announced the 24 communities it plans to bring SaskTel infiNET service to as part of the fourth phase of its $100 million Rural Fibre Initiative.

SaskTel plans to begin construction in these communities next year and expects to have the majority of residents and businesses fibre ready by the end of 2023.

Among the communities are Kipling and Oxbow.

“The need for connectivity continues to grow at a rapid pace,” said Don Morgan, minister responsible for SaskTel. “Through SaskTel’s Rural Fibre Initiative, tens of thousands of rural Saskatch-

ewan families and businesses will gain access to advanced fibre optic broadband infrastructure better enabling them to connect and thrive in the modern world.”

“Delivering speeds of up to a Gigabit per second, our infiNET service ensures SaskTel customers have the bandwidth they need to utilize the latest digital tools and technologies,” said Doug Burnett, SaskTel president and CEO. “In addition, upgrading our network to fibre provides us with a more flexible platform in these communities that can quickly grow to meet customers’

evolving needs.”

Originally announced in 2020, the Rural Fibre Initiative is a multi-phase program that will bring SaskTel infiNET service – Saskatchewan’s largest fibre optic network – to over 60,000 residents and businesses spread across 45 rural communities by the end of 2023.

The communities to receive infiNET service in the first three phases of the Rural Fibre. SaskTel anticipates the majority of homes and businesses in all four communities will be fibre ready by the end of March 2022.

Meanwhile, Carlyle is among communities where SaskTel expects to begin construction in 2022.

A day at the North Pole Here’s what we’re going to do: I will feed the reindeer. I will help make toys. I will have a snowball fight with the elves. I can’t go home because the snow is blocking the way. So Santa shows me to my bed.

I slept in a gingerbread house and it has lots of Jello inside.

“OH no! Dancer the reindeer’s horns got tangled in a tree,” I said. It took one hour to get her untangled so we cut the tree down.

When we took Dancer back, she was very hungry and sleepy. I got to sleep with all the reindeer and feed all reindeer. They were happy to be home.

Here’s what we are going to do. I am going to feed the reindeer so they are nice and full so they can help Santa deliver presents all night. I can help led the reindeer. I ran to the sleigh, but it was broken. I tried to fix it, but I could not fix it, so it was broken for another two and one half years. All the kids were very sad because there were no presents this year. I love Santa so much.

At the North Pole with Santa I would go skiing with Santa. Then I would help the elves make toys. Santa and I will go sledding. I will get to drink hot chocolate with Santa. I will go in the sleigh and go for a ride. We will make a big snowman and feed the reindeer carrots.

Here’s what we’re going to do. Santa and I went to go to the sleigh. But before we could go on a sleigh ride, we had to feed the reindeer. Santa and I went to the sleigh for a ride around the North Pole. After the sleigh ride, Santa, Mrs. Claus and I had supper and I needed to go home. Santa got on the sleigh to go home, and we flew off and when we got to the snow wall, I turned into an elf. So I stayed an elf with Santa forever!

My day at the North Pole

Elf Time Santa Time

I just got an invitation to spend the day at the North Pole with Santa! Here`s what we`re going to do to if I do go this is what I would do first. I would go to Santa`s shop to see all the toys in the shop. Then I`d ask Mrs. Claus if I could have some of her cookie. I would ask Santa if could go in the sleigh for a ride. I will ask an elf if she wants to go sledding with me.

And maybe I could ride a reindeer. Then I would ask Santa if jump off the sleigh into the snow. After that I`ll go to the bakery and get all the Choco chip cookies I want and hot chocolate. Maybe then I`ll help Santa delver the presents to all the boy`s and girl`s in the world. Then I`ll pick up my friend Madilyn in the sleigh, we`re going to have a sleep over at the north pole. With the reindeer in their sable. In the morning I`ll ask Santa if he can drive Madilyn and me home.

Here’s what we’re going to do: We are going to ride in the sleigh. Then we are going to build a snowman and we would build an igloo too. We will have some cookies and hot chocolate in Santa’s factory.

After that we will go on the reindeer with Santa. While on the reindeer, we are going to do some tricks. Next, we will play some elf games like hide and seek. I will be so tired that I will have to sleep in the sleigh.

Mr. Christmas I just got an invitation to spend the day at the North Pole with Santa! Here’s what we’re going to do: I will ride the reindeer in the morning and make new Lego kits for the kids. Then I will play with some of the Lego with Santa.

In the afternoon I will bake cookies and make some candy. At nighttime, I asked Santa if I could stay here. He said yes and then I went to bed. When it was the morning, I made a snowman then Santa and I made some snowballs and then we had a snowball fight.

A Day at the North Pole

Mrs. Claus Here’s what we are going to do. Santa took me to his wife, Mrs. Claus.

She said, “We are going to make hot chocolate.” I went to make her breakfast. It is going to be really good. I might make her coffee. I don’t know if she had coffee before. She might like it a lot. So I got busy and I made her an Ella B.E.L.T. (a bacon, egg, lettuce and tomato sandwich.) Mrs. Claus liked it a lot so she gave me a present. I liked it so much. She was so nice that she let me take the reindeer for a ride, but Rudolph got loose and fell to the ground.

When I was on my way back the sled broke. When I was on my way home, Mrs. Claus called me to come back with my horse so she could take Santa on my horse Sisco. So when we got back I stayed overnight.

In the morning, I am going to make them coffee and for their meal they can have ice cream. I hope Santa likes ice cream and if not too bad, so sad. Then we went back to Forget with Sisco and we gave him lots of horse treats. Then I took some of the reindeer’s food and fed Sisco.

My horse Sisco liked them a lot. He was very tired so when we all got home, and let Sisco nap. Santa and I am going to make a lot of cookies for his wife Mrs. Claus. When my horse woke up, we gave him a friend.

That was the reindeer. He loved it and Santa took me back to the North Pole and we made more presents. Then we returned to Forget where we started handing out all the presents to the kids. It was a lot of fun but then when we were done, Santa had to go back to the North Pole.

Here’s what we’re going to do: I asked Santa to go and see Mrs. Claus. After I saw Mrs. Claus, I asked Santa to go and see the reindeer. One of the reindeer ran away when I opened the gate. We found him. I asked Santa if I could come with him to deliver presents. It was 8 p.m. We were getting ready to go deliver present. We had fun.

The Toy Shop I want to meet the elves and play hide and seek. I can have supper with Santa and eat lunch and meet Mrs. Claus. I can feed the reindeer and eat cookies with Santa and sneak into the toy shop. I could give the reindeer a snack at midnight and I could help make toys. Then I would drink milk and help deliver presents and I would wear an elf’s costume and make ice cream for Santa.

If his doesn’t like it, too bad, too sad.
