Optimist Club of Arcola holds snowmobile rally

By Gord Paulley Great weather and adequate snow contributed to the Optimist Club of Arcola holding a very successful snowmobile rally this past Saturday. Due to the pandemic, there was a virtual rally in 2021 but this year it returned to normal.

There were 407 riders in this year’s event. The trail headed west to Kisbey and then north to Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

The snowmobilers then travelled east using the groomed trails of the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club.

Then they headed south across Highway 13 a few kilometres west of Carlyle and then returned west to Arcola and Prairie Place. The trip was approximately 100 kilometers in length and took between three and four hours to complete.

Optimist president Blake Brownridge was extremely pleased with the day’s activities and the good turnout.

“This is the Optimist Club’s largest fundraiser of the year. We have so many people to thank. Purechem Services sponsored the snacks and hot chocolate on

the trail. Pioneer Ridgeline Agri Services sponsored the concession, and the beer gardens was sponsored by J & J Trucking.

The Grade 12 class sold popcorn and the 4-H club was in charge of cleanup.

I really want to thank the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club for providing us with the use of their very well-groomed trials.”

The day began with a pancake breakfast served to around 100 snowmobilers, sponsored by the RM of Brock and the Town of Arcola. The Carlyle and District Foodbank served both the lunch and supper to this day’s event, with chairperson Theresa Luedtke advising that 180 suppers were served.

After more than 100 prizes were handed out to the riders, the lottery winners were drawn. Shannon George of Redvers took the top prize, Danette Schiestel of Arcola won second and Michel George of Bellegarde won third.

Although at this time it is not known what the exact net proceeds were, Brownridge estimates that likely over $20,000.00 was fund-

Carlyle’s Betty Jack wins her battle with Omicron variant

By Gord Paulley Local residents have known Betty Jack for many years. Born near Parkman, Jack moved to Carlyle several years ago and resides at the Eastview Apartments.

She was extremely well-known as the face of the Bargain Shop for 11 years, taking a leave of absence in March 2020. Now 71 years of age, she has no interest in returning to the work force.

Jack has one daughter, Debbie, five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Her husband Garry passed away from a heart attack in 2001 and she has had health issues of her own. Nine years ago, she also suffered a heart attack, having to have three stints inserted. She has always had a low immune system, COPD and asthma, and still smokes the occasional cigarette.

Because of her own health issues, during the past two years of this pandemic, she has been

careful staying home for the most part and keeping away from crowds.

Jack received her first and second doses of the Moderna vaccine in the spring of 2021. On Dec. 13, 2021, she received her Moderna booster shot.

In early January, she attended a small family funeral and a minor hockey tournament in Carlyle the next day. Jack started to feel ill and on Jan. 12 confirmed on Facebook that she had contracted the Omicron variant.

She started a diary and these are her unaltered daily entries: “I have been very diligent with all the rules, masking, hand sanitizing, distancing and refraining from unnecessary outings. It still got me.”

January 7 – Attended family funeral.

January 8 – Attended U7 Carlyle minor hockey tournament.

January 9 – Learned this afternoon that someone who tested positive was at the

same funeral as well as the hockey rink. Started to self-monitor Sunday, had a tickle in my throat and was coughing. Performed self test, negative.

January 10 & 11 – Severe headache, no appetite, and blah feeling.

Still showing negative.

January 12 – Woke up, bad headache, cold sweat at 5 a.m. tested positive. Took another test at 8:00 p.m. – positive.

January 13 – Had to sleep sitting up last night, so I wouldn’t cough all night. Thank goodness for Tylenol Cold and Tylenol Extra-strength! Still no appetite but have been drinking hot water and honey. Lungs hurting a bit. In afternoon was completely worn out and felt like I had been beaten up. Tiarah (granddaughter) brought me ginger ale

and I drank two bottles within an hour. Gave me some much-needed energy. Scary day today!

Called 811 for advice – was told to double up on my nebulizers and to sleep on my side or propped up. Stay away from milk products.

January 14 – Had a better sleep, feeling better than yesterday, other than hot and cold sweats! A friend dropped off some traditional medicine (skunk oil) which I downed and within hours my sinuses and chest loosened up.

(It was terrible s*** though and had to gargle several times to get rid of the taste.)

January 15 – Amazing sleep, still testing positive. Just got to get some energy.

January 16 – Sore throat still, glands swollen a bit. Still not much energy. Another great sleep.

Thankfully, after an arduous 10-day ordeal, Jack tested negative on Jan. 18 and is now feel-

ing fine. “I am thankful for all of the family and friends that called and checked up on me.

I have a very low immune system, COPD, Asthma, heart and kidney disease, and am a pre-diabetic. I honestly feel that being triple vaccinated kept me out of the hospital.”

Carievale man part of the convoy to Ottawa

By Ana Bykhovskaia Many truckers arrived in Ottawa and surrounding areas as a part of the Freedom Convoy this past weekend.

The movement that was originally planned to urge the federal government to drop their vaccination mandates for cross-border, essential workers like truck drivers quickly grew into a larger protest against all COVID-related public health regulations.

The convoy left Western Canada on Jan. 24 and was picking up participants and gaining support while going east.

Carievale resident Ken Hilton, a driver with Fast Trucking, along with his neighbour Riley Carpenter and his sister Tierra joined the procession in Brandon, Man., on Jan. 24.

He made it to Ottawa with a Fast Trucking semi Saturday late afternoon and said the whole experience has been "pretty awesome."

"The downtown core is packed with vehicles and semis. The police have a lot of streets blocked off with heavy equipment. And there is, I don't know, thousands of trucks at the city right now, you can't even get in here," said Hilton in an

interview with the Mercury on Sunday.

He said the estimates he heard were about 1,200 semis and 6,000 passenger vehicles from Western Canada partaking in protests in Ottawa as of Sunday. Monday morning Hilton also added that he was hearing reports that thousands of trucks were blocked outside the city and locked down in Quebec, and only a very small per cent made it to downtown.

"Everybody is cheering and peacefully protesting, people have given speeches," Hilton said, describing what's been happening around him.

As of Monday morning, police haven't reported any physical violence at the ongoing rally in Ottawa.

Hilton said that Sunday morning there was a ceremony at the War Memorial to show respect for the memorial and the fallen soldiers, for which truckers bought a lot of flowers to place them at the site, which was spraypainted during the rally.

"There are people here that are trying to make us fail. But hopefully, we can send a good message," Hilton said.

Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa. However, on Saturday he and other protesters got trapped further away from downtown, where the vehicles stayed until Sunday morning. Protesters walked to the parliament in the evening to join the demonstrations.

"This morning, the police were kind of slacking and they opened up a gap. And a bunch of us lined up and pushed through the gap. They couldn't stop us all. They eventually got it back off again, but 100 of us this morning made it closer to downtown," Hilton said.

"There's still lots of room down here, but the city and the police have it all blocked off. It's hard to move."

When Hilton first heard of a potential convoy heading to Ottawa, he thought of joining right away, but while the antimandate message was something he wanted to stand for, it still wasn't an easy decision as he would have to leave family behind. He wrote a draft of a message to his boss, Dennis Day, the owner of Fast Trucking, but then he took two more days to think it through before he actually sent it.

"We were on a rig move, and I was sitting there waiting to get loaded and thought, I'm gonna send it to him. And I sent it to him. And he's like, 'Oh, you want to go?'

I was like, 'Yeah, that'd be great,'" Hilton recalled.

"It's just been too overwhelming with all the overreach that our government has. And I don't like sending my kids to school wearing masks. It'd sure be nice if they could grow up in the

country that we grew up in," Hilton said, explaining his motivation to join the movement.

"And I didn't want to get the vaccine. I'm not going to say that I was forced, because no one forced me to, but I chose to take it to continue my job. And I don't feel that was right. We have the freedom of choice in this country. People fought for our freedom. The government shouldn't be able to decide what we do with our bodies," Hilton added.

"I thought it was a very good thought. So I told him if he wanted to go, he could go ahead and we'd supply him with everything to stay there for a month or two months, we'll pay him to stay there until something happens, something changes," Day said.

"He's there for himself and for everybody that works with Fast Trucking and for Fast Trucking," Day noted.

Day added he wanted to see someone from his company joining the convoy to deliver the message to the government, but it wasn't something he could ask for, as people would have to leave their families. So he was glad to support Hilton in his decision.

"It's two years of these mandates, telling people to get a vaccine when it isn't proven. And a lot of us got the vaccine because we had to get the vaccine to live our life or even to work," Day said.

"We are supposed to be a free country. We've got the vaccine, and you're still getting COVID. I'm one of them. I'm double vaccinated, and I still got COVID three weeks ago.

We're already short truck drivers in Canada, in the U.S., and if we lose more ... How come for two … years truckers were essential, and they could go back and forth. And now two years later, they want to change it. That's not right either," Day said.

Day picked up Hilton's expenses, but Hilton said that they will be filling up the forms needed to reclaim the money raised through the GoFundMe campaign to cover the convoy fuel costs.

he plans on staying for as long as it's needed for the government to hear their concerns.

"I feel like most of the people are planning on staying here as long as they can. Obviously, everybody can't stay forever. But hopefully, we can stay long enough for the government to realize there's something going on in this country, and they need to address it," Hilton said. "I'd like to probably stay two weeks or more, but we'll see what happens. It'd be nice to go home early obviously, I have family and work to go back to, but I got a go-ahead and stay as long as it takes from the boss," Hilton said.

While they were driving to Ottawa, there were a lot of people supporting the convoy along its route.

"A big thanks to all the supporters along the highway there. In every town we went through, there were people on both sides, from the west side of town all the way to the east side of town.

Every major intersection or set of lights all the way along the No. 1 Highway, down Highway 17. There are so many people at all the overpasses. It's just unbelievable to see all the support … People offering food and windshield washer fluid and money, just everything," Hilton shared.

Hilton also gave a shout-out to Prairie Boys Spray Foam, whose employee is partaking in the convoy alongside him.

Vaccination still best way to end pandemic

By Murray Mandryk There is less of a fight over the desire to remove all restrictions than Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and others would have us believe.

Surely, getting back to the way things were before the COVID-19 pandemic began almost two years ago is what everyone wants. Why wouldn’t it be?

We’re all sick and tired of having our lives disrupted.

The real question, however, remains: How do we keep people safe?

It still comes down getting vaccinated.

Vaccines were the marker Moe relied on when his Saskatchewan Party government made the decision to remove all restrictions last July.

Yes, that 70 per cent was an arbitrary number at a time when children under 18 were not yet eligible.

And it didn’t take into account that we always needed two shots to best prevent serious illness.

Yet we accepted it because we recognized that vaccination rates were the best marker available when it came to determining how safe we were.

As critical as hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths have been as measures of the battle against COVID-19, you don’t want to use these as a marker for the obvious reason: You want to avoid milestones like ICUs and deaths — not use that them as markers.

Moreover, using vaccination rates as the marker was a great way to encourage more people to get vaccinated.

It all made sense, so why wouldn’t we do something that just made sense?

It’s important to understand our vaccination rates, and perhaps why Moe and his government have suddenly decided they are supposedly no longer significant in government decision-making of removing restrictions.

Where we all can surely agree with the Saskatchewan premier is that it’s been exceedingly difficult to get a small portion of adamant vaccine resisters to agree to finally get vaccinated.

While about 80 per cent of this province’s total population is vaccinated (when you take into account little children under five years still not eligible), it remains among the lowest rates in the country along with Alberta and the territories.

And convincing the unvaccinated has surely become harder instead of easier.

By the end of January, Saskatchewan only recorded 20,765 receiving their first dose, bringing the total number of people in the province with at least one dose to 963,399 people.

This is worst monthly total in quite some time.

Of those 20,765 Saskatchewan first dose recipients, 10,944 were recently eligible children five to 11 years old and another 2,190 were children between 12 and 17.

The problem is that what Moe is now saying and what his government is doing is becoming their own self-fulfilling prophecy.

It’s surely worth noting that a surge in new vaccine recipients we saw in September and October came after government implemented vaccine passports.

Now Moe is saying that he doubts he can many more vaccinated, that Omicron is responsible for Omicron, that vaccines don’t aren’t stopping the spread of Omicron and that the vast majority of people just want things re-opened.

Moe’s notion that vaccines don’t stop Omicron spread has outraged doctors. Others question whether this is more about the Premier looking for justifications to avoid doing what he admits is very hard.

Yes, it’s hard to get people the remaining people vaccinated. But vaccines have been and still are the way out this pandemic.

Giving me something to cry about

Shelley Luedtke I just needed to have a good cry. Over nothing. Over everything.

I wasn’t sure what I needed to cry about.

There were a dozen reasons I could name.

There are times tears threaten to spill and we feel an urge to reign them in. But it makes me wonder why.

Why do we fight their existence as though their presence is not to be acknowledged? Why do we treat tears as though they don’t belong as part of our experience at any given moment?

Picture someone standing in a large grass-covered area.

Rows of trees border the space and benches are placed sporadically. The person standing in the middle of the scene is wiping away tears.

If it’s a park, we might question why they are standing in a public space exhibiting such emotion. But if they are in a cemetery, the crying is understood because we have a context to as-

sociate with the tears.

There are places we understand tears and places where we have determined they don’t belong. Imagine the different reactions that would greet tears in different places. A church.

The beach. The boardroom. A doctor’s office.

A classroom. In some places tears make sense.

In others, they are perceived as out of place.

Inappropriate.

Awkward.

But as I considered my need to let tears loose, I wondered why I characterized it as my need to have a good cry.

Does a good cry look different from a bad one?

What about a sad cry? If the reasons we find ourselves crying are happy ones, does that make it a good cry? What if we’re hurt, grieving or in pain? Is that by default a bad cry? Not even close.

Because although not all crying is created equal, some pretty good things can happen when we cry, especially when we get honest about how we are feeling and we let those tears flow.

We are told we make 15 to 30 gallons of tears per year which can be triggered by anything from happy announcements to sad news to, well, in my case, chopping onions. There are different kinds of tears and their release can cleanse, nourish and even protect our eyes.

A history of the Carlyle Lions Pride Life Lease

By Gord Paulley Twenty-five years ago, two Carlyle & District Lions Club members, Bill Brown and Ken Colpitts, travelled to Birtle, Man., to look at a Life Lease project that had been built there.

They brought their findings back to the club and it was determined that local seniors needed another housing option to remain in Carlyle.

Weighing the risks, the local Lions Club decided to proceed with the initial construction of duplex housing units.

Colpitts, working with Bilenkoff Management of Winnipeg, found that there was quite an interest in such a project and a list of prospective tenants was obtained.

The Town of Carlyle donated the club five acres of land just off Carlyle Avenue that it had previously purchased from Cecil and Jean George.

It was up to the Lions Club to landscape, install water and sewer, and build the road.

In 1998, construction commenced and six duplexes were built. They were sold out and the first 12 tenants moved in on July 1, 2000. The project was such an initial success that another four units were then built a year later. In 2011, interest remained strong and Chairman Frank Faber proposed that they build another 4 units to complete the project. Again, the building of these units was on time

and new tenants were able to move into them in the fall of 2012.

The Lions Life Lease project is one that is new and unique to southeast Saskatchewan. Tenants must be 55 years of age or older. They must invest a specific amount of money (normally 50 per cent of the fair market value) called an entrance fee. While they do not own their unit, they can stay for life. Upon moving, they are guaranteed their initial investment back less a small administration fee.

Tenants then pay a monthly rent to cover the cost of a mortgage payment, property taxes, and a condo maintenance fee. They are responsible for their own power, gas, water, sewer, telephone and internet.

There are many benefits to both the tenants and the local Lions Club. The tenants live in a beautiful home with mutual green space shared among fellow seniors. The grass is cut, the snow is blown, and tenants don’t have to worry about repairs and maintenance. The costs are very reasonable and the seniors maintain their independence.

There are also benefits to the local Lions Club. As the principle portion of the mortgages are paid down, the Lions earn that equity and when the debt is paid in full the Club will own 50 per cent of the units outright. In addition,

The Lions Club continually upgrades its units replacing appliances, flooring and repainting as needed. New tenants can upgrade their property as they wish with costs and renovations mutually agreed to by both the tenant and the Lions Life Lease Committee. The club is also pleased to advise that Genco Asphalt out of Estevan is going to repave the driveways of the first 16 units built and the entire circular roadway this summer.

administrator Sheila Colpitts have worked diligently over the years and provide solid leadership and management.

They and the Lions Club are very proud of what has been accomplished the past 22 years. There are 20 beautiful units that are regularly upgraded, many trees have been planted, and many residents maintain lovely flower arrangements. The Savill family has graciously donated a gazebo located centrally in its green space which provides a regular meeting place for the tenants during the spring and summer.

regularly and provides strong guidance. Veteran maintenance personnel to assist with snow removal and grass mowing are available at a moment’s notice. The Lions Club uses local contractors and businesses whenever possible. The Life Lease concept has proved to be extremely popular with a number of local and out-of-town residents on its waiting list. The entire project has been a tremendous success and is a positive addition to the town of Carlyle.

The Fleurys are brothers and NHL teammates

By Gord Paulley It was a special way to start the month for a local family when the Seattle Kraken visited the Boston Bruins for an NHL regular season game.

Dressing with Haydn Fleury was his brother Cale, who was called up from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). Both play defence and both were paired together on this night.

Haydn was drafted in 2014 by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, seventh overall.

He has played 204 NHL regular season games with Carolina, the Anaheim Ducks and now Seattle.

Cale was drafted in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. This 23 year old played 41 games for the Canadiens in 2019/2020 and since then has played in the AHL. Last year’s expansion draft was the first time in NHL history that two brothers have been selected in the same draft by the same team. Both boys were

born and raised in Carlyle by their parents John and Sandra Fleury. This family has strong hockey bloodlines.

John Fleury played in the Big Six Hockey League for nearly 20 years in the 1980s and 1990s. He was a strong and gifted centre who won both league and provincials with the Carlyle Cougars in the 199192 season. Sandra Fleury (nee Jarvis) and her father Don and three uncles also played Big Six Hockey for the Cougars back in the 1960s and ’70s.

The Fleury brothers played their minor hockey in Carlyle, with the family moving to Calgary back in 2002. The Observer caught up with John and Sandy in Carlyle. Of course their parents are extremely proud of their accomplishments. Said John, “Haydn’s strength is his skating and Cale’s strength is his physical play. Added Sandra, “They are very good hockey players, but what really makes us proud as parents is that they are very caring young men.”

It may also be noted that the entire Fleury family loves

The town of Carlyle is extremely proud of the Fleury brothers and is in the process of upgrading the Welcome to

Carlyle sign at the Carlyle Golf Club/Curling Rink. No doubt they will be prominently featured as local boys who made it to the show known as the National Hockey League.

We concluded our interview with a quote from John and Sandra that their son Haydn says nearly every day.

“Hockey, love the game and it will love you back.”

Carnduff beats Redvers in Big Six showdown The Carnduff Red Devils beat the Redvers Rockets 5-3 Tuesday night in a battle of the top two teams in the Big Six Hockey League.

After a scoreless first period, Carnduff scored four times in the second to lead 4-1 through two, and after Redvers stormed back with two in the third, Devon Carriere scored for Carnduff with less than seven minutes to play.

Dominic Turner had two goals for Carnduff.

Matt Audette, Nico Anderson and Devon Carriere also scored. (Carn-

duff’s goalie was not available).

Daylin Smallchild scored twice for Redvers and Preston Kopyck also had a goal. Thomas Bauche was the goalie.

With the win, Carnduff (11-2-1) moved into a tie for first with Redvers (11-1-1), although Redvers has a game in hand.

Also on Tuesday, the Carlyle Cougars edged the Bienfait Coalers 6-5.

Carlyle led Carnduff 2-1 after the first period, but Carnduff scored six times in the second. Audette had a hat trick and Anderson scored twice.

Mark Moriarty, Justin Hollinger, Trevor Geiger, Ty Stovin and Justin Smith had the other goals.

for Carlyle.

Landon Audet was the Carlyle goalie. Carnduff’s goalie was not available.

Kyle Steinke was the goalie for Wawota.

Kopeck scored twice for Redvers against Oxbow. Drew Hoff and Ausstin Dufresne had the other Redvers goals.

Cody Matthewson was the Redvers goalie.

Jordan Cooney and Liam Rutten were the Oxbow scorers, and Cody Levesque in goal for Oxbow.

Anthony Radkey scored three times for Moosomin against Bienfait, and Jevon Schwean and Bud Holloway also scored.

Levi Horn was in goal for Moosomin, while Ethan Veroba was the Coalers’ netminder.

Oxbow will visit Wawota on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Two games were played in provincials on Saturday.

Moosomin defeated Wynyard 3-1 in Game 2 of their best of three senior C south quarter-final series to tie the matchup at 1-1. Game 3 will be Feb. 5 in Moosomin at 8 p.m.

Anthony Radkey, Monty Driver and Jacob Pillar scored in the first period for Moosomin. Kyler Beckett was the goalie.

Davidson defeated Redvers 5-4 in double overtime in Game 1 of their best-of-three senior C south quarter-final.

Game 2 will be Feb. 5 in Davidson, and Game 3, if necessary, would be Feb. 6, also in Davidson.

Remy Lamotte scored twice for Redvers.

Anita Kehler retires as public health nurse

By Gord Paulley After a long and rewarding career, Anita Kehler has decided to retire as a public health nurse, and Monday was her last day on the job.

Anita and her husband Eldon moved to Carlyle in 1993. Her hometown was Lanigan and she and Eldon met at the University of Saskatchewan.

Eldon has been employed at the Moose Mountain Lodge for many years and is also the maintenance man at

the Carlyle Lions Club Pride Estates. Their two children live in Calgary.

Daughter Breanna, 24, completed her studies two years ago at the University of Calgary and is now employed as a registered social worker.

Andrew, 22, is attending Bow Valley College and is interested in justice and law enforcement.

After 28 1/2 years as a public health nurse, the decision to call it a career was made. In 2019, they purchased a home in Calgary and just recently sold their Car-

Kehler has been employed by the Provincial Government since September 1993 and has a lot of fond memories.

“My co-workers and the local residents of Carlyle and surrounding area have been great to work with over the years. This two year pandemic has been tough on everyone but we have persevered.”

With their children living in Calgary, combined with Anita also having her mother, two brothers, and nieces and nephews residing there, a retirement move to Alberta has been in the works for some time.

While she is a registered nurse, Kehler’s specialty is breastfeeding and is an international board certified lactation consultant.

Living and working in Carlyle has been a great experience for the Kehler family and Anita wishes to thank all of those who they have met and made long lasting friendships over the years. “Eldon and I welcome anyone visiting Calgary to give us a call and arrange a visit. Ev-

eryone is welcome.”

Richelle McAuley, a co-worker and one of Anita’s best friends, made a beautiful tribute.

“Anita and I have worked at Carlyle Public Health for over 24 years.

She has been so easy to work with, we have gotten along well the entire time. She is a kind, genuine person, nurse, co-worker and friend.

She always has a smile, is very calm, organized, approachable and caring.

“She has a gift for working with new

moms, and has a passion for helping them with breastfeeding. She has been an amazing role model to me, and her shoes feel very big to fill. We have worked through two pandemics, so have had our share of stress and tears, but also lots of memories and laughs. I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today without having the experience of working with her. She will be missed in our workplace and in the communities she has served for over 28 years.”

How to handle debt during tax season The deadline for paying your 2021 taxes is quickly approaching, and about one-third of Canadian tax filers will need to send money to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

With many taxpayers already in debt, it’s no surprise that many Canadians have trouble paying their annual taxes. This year may be especially difficult, as anyone who received a Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will have to pay a portion of it back.

Here are some tips to help you handle your tax debt and avoid fines and penalties.

FILE YOUR TAXES EVEN IF YOU CAN’T PAY Failing to file your taxes on time can result in financial or criminal penalties, which will only make your situation worse. The CRA charges a penalty of five per cent of your 2020 balance owing, plus one per cent for each month your return is late.

There’s no leniency on your filing deadline this year, so while you may not have to pay until April 30, 2023, you still need to file by April 30, 2022.

APPLY FOR A PAYMENT PLAN OR TO WAIVE PENALTIES AND INTEREST If you’re having trouble paying your taxes, the CRA offers the following options: • Payment plan. In some cases, you can pay the balance owed on your taxes in instalments. To be eligible for this, you need to prove to the CRA that you’re doing everything you can to get the money together.

• Waive penalties and interest. You can apply to the CRA to have your penalties and interest reduced or waived. You’ll need to prove your inability to pay and demonstrate how settling your tax bill will create undue financial hardship for you and your family.

CAPP projects investment will rise in 2022 The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is forecasting a 22 per cent increase in natural gas and oil investment in 2022.

Capital spending in the sector is expected to grow by $6.0 billion to reach $32.8 billion, compared to an estimated total investment of $26.9 billion in 2021.

(All figures in Canadian dollars).

The expected growth in spending for 2022 would mark the second straight year of significant increases in investment as Canadian producers look to capitalize on stronger commodity prices due to rapidly growing global demand for natural gas and oil.

Conventional oil

and natural gas capital investment for 2022 is forecast at $21.2 billion, up from an estimated $18.1 billion last year, while growth in oil sands investment is expected to increase 33 per cent to $11.6 billion compared to $8.7 billion last year.

While CAPP says this is great news for the struggling Canadian economy, within the context of total global investment Canada is continuing to lose market share to other jurisdictions. In 2014, CAPP said Canada was viewed as a top tier international investment jurisdiction for resource development and attracted $81 billion or more than 10 per cent of total global upstream natural gas and oil investment.

International energy research firm Wood Mackenzie is forecasting global spending on upstream natural gas and oil production will reach $525 billion in 2022.

Based on that forecast Canada has fallen to just six per cent of total market share, a four per centage point drop which represents over $21 billion in potential investment.

In 2022, producers in Saskatchewan expect to invest $2.7 billion in the province, a 16 per cent increase over 2021. Saskatchewan’s 2021 upstream investment was forecast to reach $2.8 billion but updated estimates show producers spent $2.3 billion last year, a shortfall of approxi-

mately $500 million.

Increasing municipal costs in some rural jurisdictions have significantly raised concerns which are likely contributing to a slowing of investment in the province.

“Canada’s natural gas and oil industry is continuing its path towards recovery,” said CAPP president and CEO Tim McMillan.

“The growth in upstream investment will support jobs across the country and provide a positive boost to Canada’s economic recovery.

Improving commodity prices and increased

investment in natural gas and oil production will also deliver billions more dollars of muchneeded government revenues to support Canadians as we work our way through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.”

Alida news – rally to support Freedom Convoy Submitted by Edel Cowan In the afternoon of Jan. 29, there was a small group of approximately 25 participants (including children) together with 10 vehicles or so that gathered in Alida for a mini rally/ parade, through the streets, in support of the truckers’ Freedom Convoy, which had

toured to Ottawa. Following this parade, they gathered in front of the MLA office on Centre Street to warm up by a bonfire and enjoy some hotdogs and soup.

Jan. 30 was another breakfast at the rink with Kitchen Group 3 in charge. They served up 38 breakfasts (tied the Breakfast Challenge total set by group 4).

It was great to see that

the guys from Redvers attend once again as well as others from the Wauchope area. Next Sunday it will be back to group 4 being at the helm and let’s hope the weather will stay nice. Hope to keep seeing you at the rink and please remember COVID rules apply.

Ruth Dennis, who has been a resident of the Maryfield Villa for several years, has moved to a nursing home in Estevan. Here she will get the extra care she needs and is closer to her daughter, Gwen Donais, and family.

When the fog lifts and you can view the scenery Although fog is a common occurrence to those of us living on the West Coast (perhaps the East Coast as well), these past several weeks we've been smothered in the grey stuff.

My normal view is of the Pacific Ocean, the east side of Vancouver Island and the islands in-between. Lately, on many of those grey days, it's been impossible to see any of them.

After living here for nearly 20 years, I can visualize those features in my mind but what doesn't ever become normal is the sense of gloom and dark-

Carlyle RCMP Report – don’t drive while distracted Your Carlyle RCMP were busy conducting traffic enforcement this week, handing out multiple tickets for speeding, inadequate lights, and failing to have a driver’s licence, to name a few.

On Jan. 25, RCMP received a report of harassment taking place over social media and text messages. Although these messages were not violent in nature, they were not appropriate and slandering. The complainant in this instance did not want police to intervene at this time but wanted them to be aware in the event the situation got worse.

I want to remind everyone to be mindful and respectful of what they are writing on social media and through text messages. Lots of people seem to get a lot braver and more disrespectful when they are behind their keyboard. Remember you can and will be held accountable for your actions online. It’s like mom always said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all”.

On Jan. 26, your Carlyle RCMP located a male citizen of Albania who was wanted on a Canadawide immigration warrant. Canada Border Services had received intel that the male was “hiding out” in a community about two hours from Regina. The big tip came when the Albanian made a phone call from a local phone number.

Once that took place, RCMP were able to attend the residence that call came from and arrest the male without incident. He is set to be deported out of Canada.

The same day, Carlyle RCMP decided to try their hand in the tow truck industry when an ambulance was stuck while en route to a medical call in the area. RCMP managed to pull the stuck ambulance out of the snow and ensured that the ambulance was able to make it the rest of the way to their call. It’s not often RCMP get to assist other emergency services but it’s nice when we can.

The following day, a female senior citizen pedestrian was hit on Main

Street in Carlyle while crossing the street. The female pedestrian was knocked to the ground and the unknown white truck responsible left the scene. The elderly female was helped to her feet and off the street by two people in the area. Carlyle RCMP is requesting anyone with information about this incident to contact the Carlyle RCMP by calling 306-453-6707.

Officers are also requested the two good Samaritans who helped the female to her feet to please come forward. Information can be submitted anonymously through CrimeStoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com On Jan. 28, the RCMP responded a complaint of a sister and brother arguing and fighting and the fight starting to escalate.

RCMP attended and were able to diffuse the situation before anyone was injured. While at the residence, RCMP were given two large knives and a set of brass knuckles and were asked to destroy them.

On Jan. 30, RCMP received a call about snowmobilers drinking on the Moose Mountain Provincial Park trails.

The caller observed a group of nearly 40 snowmobilers all drinking at one of the shelters on the trail. RCMP patrolled the area but were not able to locate anyone drinking.

As many people and snowmobilers are aware, we don’t get out on the trails enough. That being said, everyone can help us hold people accountable. If the RCMP receives a video, photos, or a statement that people were breaking the law by drinking in public, they can be served a $250 ticket after the fact.

Also that day, RCMP received a call of two large dogs at large in Arcola. The dogs were attacking the caller’s truck, trying to get to the caller’s dog that was safely inside.

The owner of the dogs eventually took control of the animals. The owner was notified that she could be held responsible for her dog’s actions.

people with dementia, people suffering from drug and alcohol psychosis, to people suffering from depression. We want to encourage everyone to reach out for help and talk to someone if they can. No matter how

bad things may seem remember that they will always get better.
